greetings everyone and welcome to another classic wildlife guide today we'll be doing an advanced shaman guide we'll have a special guest instructor that will be guiding us through tanking as a shaman in classic well it's not easy it takes a lot of attention but it can be done with all of my slides guys remember that time stamps are below it up in comments you can effectively navigate the guide at your own pace and will also be available as Google slides but this is a special one since this guide was written by cap orphan himself our instructor his written guide is also available on classic wildlife so I suggest going on there to both watch the video and read his amazing guide all right let's get started first I'd go through some shaman tanking fantasy this helps me kind of get into the role of tanking as a shaman so I'll read my little piece of lore here Shawn one of the spiritual leaders of their clans or tribes spending their time communing with the ancestors and the elemental forces of Azeroth however desperate times call for desperate measures with the forces of evil that have erupted in recent years some shaman have shifted their training into the martial arts replacing their staves and curative magics with axes maces blades and shields some of these warrior shaman prefer explosive offensive abilities and tactics while others have adopted a more defensive approach you as a shaman defender have vowed to protect not only the members of your clan but all of the Horde with your mighty shield so we do have some prerequisites for this course I highly recommend watching my shaman tech guide as well as reading totem tanks and shaman tanking guide the links are available in the description or you can click on the slides if you're reading them cool slides the two next pieces of content or my advanced shaman guide and the shaman totem guide now both of these will introduce you to totems of course but we'll introduce you to our abilities how they're used spell coefficients rotations and stuff like that and will serve as a basis for the course you're about to take in shaman tank these links are also available description or clickable if you're reading the Google slides now let's introduce you to our instructor caber Finn he is the author of the guide to shaman tanking which this video and slides are based off of he also has created the shaman tank gear list and the shaman tank and list both of these things we reference in this guide make sure you bookmark these they are very important if you want a shaman tank endgame these are the two lists you definitely want to reference he also has a lot of experience in endgame classic shaman tanking and theorycrafting he regularly streams on Twitch his link will be in description below but his twitch.tv slash caper fin and he makes a load of instructional and interesting classic law videos on YouTube so make sure to check him out on YouTube as well as a disclaimer Cape orphan is much more experience with tanking endgame as a shaman in any game dungeons and raids I will be going over and leveling portion at the end of this video and guide well keep orphan take it away thanks Mel Ron my intent and statement with this guide is not to upset anyone or downplay different classes but to bring to light a rarely talked about topic of the game nothing about what will be detailed in this guide is Orthodox many distinctive elements can be tied to other hybrid classes looking to stray away from the path of normality every possible subject that comes to mind will be dissected to answer any lingering questions you might have in the likely situation a subject is not addressed or addressed poorly please bring it to my attention I expect the same amount of scrutiny from my readers as I have put into writing this guide so please don't hold back before continuing an important aspect needs to be brought to everyone's attention for some players this will be old news but for many other players this will be a much-needed revelation I am talking about the topic of viable and optimal which are highly controversial topics as some people simply don't see the difference or mix these words up and commonly interject their own misguided philosophy onto it to put it simply optimal is the most efficient and foolproof solution to solve a problem that eliminates as many negative variables as possible and favors a more easygoing route next is viable or commonly refer to as possible which is often seen as the more challenging path to take but too many it feels like a greater personal achievement with all of this in mind where our shaman tanks placed exactly shamans are classified under viable and with each Theory after joining our ranks and contributing their work perhaps shaman could feasibly one day dethrone those braggadocious paladin tanks and even bear tanks and reach a theoretical semi optimal special on many shaman tanks will agree their motivation or drive comes from the glory of accomplishing something that the rest of the server population dares not even try if this sounds like you I encourage you to continue watching to reiterate my point you decide to go shaman tank if you want the challenge in a otherwise easy to clear raid for example molten core is on farm status if it wasn't made obvious before shield-bearing is a sizeable undertaking when experienced players pick up a shaman tank and put in the effort it shines tenfold nevertheless your guild must also be experienced and prepared for a tempestuous task ahead you will often see experienced Raiders from top guild play as a restoration shaman in rates and build a tanking set while healing eventually they will transition into shaman tanking due to its extra challenge in an otherwise easy clear content phase they usually make the switch after the initial rush to get world-first on a boss or raid as claimed or the subsequent following content route approaches as I previously stated it is not for the faint of heart if you are brand spanking new to World of Warcraft consider levelling up a range class for example a mage to get an adequate grasp of the PvE rates all the while you may be researching about tanking and talking to peers to get a feel for it and slowly transition to the world of shaman tanking if you're a veteran of the game by all means start leveling that shaman let me go over some basics of shaman tanking shamans are fully capable of tanking 5-man content 10-man content and rate bosses however they can tank view as a main tank but most as an offtank however there are shortcomings your Armour and mitigation will never reach a warrior's however your damage and threat can be on par with equally geared warriors next you have little to no emergency cooldown so be cautious many spells are also very man intensive and many mobs and bosses have nature resistance now how can we combat these shortcomings well there are multiple ways the first one is through buffs the second consumables the third different gear sets and bonuses the fourth shifts in spell and attack rotation and finally the most important having trusted friends and guilties now let's go over the threat basics a character in melee range will need to do 110 percent of a tank's threat to steal aggro but for a ranged caster or hunter they will need to exceed the threat of a tank by a hundred and thirty percent if you would like to know more about threat in general you can watch the video titled tanking and thread guide remember your job as a tank is to produce enough thread to maintain a grow at all times now let's talk about earth shock a showman's tank bread and butter when it comes to inducing a threat against the boss first of all earth shock has a two times threat modifier second down ranking is key to mana efficiency at level 60 rank one earth shock is used for interrupts rank five earth shock is used as a sunder armor rank seven earth shock is used as a taunt however with all of the good stuff there are some downsides it has a 40 to 45 percent spell coefficient and many mobs are nature resistant however there are solutions to this for example I have Moen and the debuff that originates from thunderfury blessed blade of the windseeker the last downside is that there are no Borlaug curses that buff earth shock now let's move on to rockbiter weapon rockbiter weapon provides a fixed amount of threat increasing with each rank that is multiplied by weapon speed this means that weapon speed does not matter however haste via the flurry talent does increase threat per second as you swing faster on the screen right now is a mathematical example for those nerdy people out there next is lightning shield lightning shield deals damage on hit producing threat however it should only be used in certain circumstances it receives 33% of spell power on each discharge and it cannot crit but its damage is increased via storm strike lightning shield is also on the global cooldown and therefore should not be prioritized over other spells like earth shark down ranking lightning shield is vital to conserve resources and maintain its effective uptime lightning shield Rank 2 should be used indiscriminately whenever it falls off rank 4 lightning shield is a cost efficient enough in higher gear tanks to use periodically during a fight rank 7 lightning shield is relegated only in the pre-poll when mana is capped or if mana isn't an issue in certain encounters here is a neat little trick for shaman tanks who are looking to show off before a boss pool equipped spell power gear cast lightning shield and then switch back to your normal tankier to maximize damage and threat next is oil of emulation oil of emulation is excellent to use before pulling a boss or against multiple mobs also it does not trigger a global cooldown but may reset your swing timer in classic World of Warcraft so get an add-on for it oil of emulation can be bought from the auction house or crafted with an alchemy level of 220 I suggest stock up on as many as possible as you will be using them to increase threat regularly next are lightning spells lightning bolt will be your pull mechanic on single target mobs unfortunately lightning bolt only has a one-time threat multiplier in terms of down ranking rank for lightning bolt is the most economical version of the spell if threat is not an issue ranked 10th lightning bolt causes the most threat and should be used if threat as an issue here is a neat little trick involving lightning bolt on bosses equipped spell power and spell critique ear head to the maximum range and cast lightning bolt while the bolt travels immediately switch to your normal tank gear and drink before entering combat for maximal initial threat in terms of chain lightning use it if fighting multiple mobs to generate threat on all or many targets in this situation use the maximum rank of chain lightning now let's look at explosives the first explosive we're gonna look at is goblin sapper charge goblin sapper charge is excellent used on multi mob poles goblin sapper chart also leaves a high amount of damage on an instant cast Howard there is a downside goblin sapper charge has a cool-down of 5 minutes in order to gain ownership of goblin sapper charge they can be bought from the auction house or crafted with an engineering level of 205 there are also other bombs that are worth having as they have a shorter cooldown for example dark iron bomb which can be casted in a five-yard radius it requires a 1 second cast time but you must stand still the next bomb is crystal charge which can be cast in a 3 yard radius but this can be casted while moving let's examine resource regeneration all consumables generate threat as they regenerate resources in an unnatural way mana and health regeneration generates half of the threat per point but you must remember that it will not produce threat if you are already at maximum resources major rejuvenation potion for example is great because it increases both health and mana you should try to combo this with other on use items such as goblin sapper charge there are many other items that can be used that will increase threat and also help out your healers so they have to spend less time and mana healing you there are also two different cooldown categories one is outlined in red and other in blue reflective buffs are the next topic we're going to be looking at for example thorns which produces small amounts of damage and threat to your attacker if they are within melee range although it produces the smallest amount of threat in our toolkit it's worth mentioning reflective buffs in general shines and multi mob pulls or with single targets with fast attack speeds all of the buffs to the right of the screen stacked with each other and are in order of threat produced from high to low there are also many ways for our raid members to reduce their threat for example rogues can perform feint which reduces their threat or cast vanish which completely wipes their threat next our mages mages if they've taken the frost channeling talent can reduce the threat they deal with frost spells they can also take burning soul a fire talent that reduced the threat done by fire spells next are druids druids have tower and cat form reducing their threat turrets can also pick up the talent subtlety reducing the threat produced by healing spells next are priests priests have fade which reduces their overall threat and the talent silent resolve reducing the threat of all spells lastly are shamans taking youth tranquil air totem which reduces player and party wide threat shamans can also acquire the talent healing grates reducing the threat done by hee spells now let's talk about a subject that will interest a lot of people the rotation let's look at the first rotation the basic tank in Spain in the pre pull phase cast lightning shield rank seven next make sure all applicable buffs are on you you can see the buff section for more information on this topic next make sure your weapon enhancement is up with considerable time left you're gonna likely max your rockbiter weapon unless you're Auto Attack dps is above 140 if it is use win fury weapon next place totems you can see the totem section for more information on this topic now here comes the pulling phase of the target cast rank 10 lightning bolt or rank for Chain Lightning if there are multiple mobs next follow it up with rank 7 earth shock next rinse and repeat rank 5 earth shock on cooldown if it happens to be use rank 7 earth shock to pull aggro back if a girl happens to be lost next refresh rank 4 of Lightning shield when it falls off if fighting multiple mobs make sure to tap target to spread Auto attacks and shark targets that you have low threat on also it may be useful to have your first shark rotation placed on a secondary target to ensure it won't pull off of you as the primary target likely will die fast but this is situational let's look at the rotation that deals with nature immune targets the pre-poll phase is identical to previous rotation moving on in the pulling phase cast max rank flame shock or frost shot on cooldown make sure to buff frost and fire damage in any way possible one of the many ways of increasing frost damage is through the debuff winters chill when it comes to dealing threat against multiple mobs it's pretty much the same deal as we previously looked at the last rotation we're going to be looking at is the most complex but deals the best results in the pre pool phase equipped spell damage gear and cast rank 7 light shield then replenish mana through consuming food next equip three pieces of strong collars guard which is a tier 2.5 gear set afterwards equipment augers regalia set next place mana spring totem followed by activating oil of emulation immediately after place stone claw totem in front of you then back up to about 25 to 30 yards next use unconscious dig rat and cast rank one lightning bolt to proc the nature effect from stone Karla's garb or attack the rat to proc flurry and elemental devastation mages can be used to polymorph the rat until one of these effects occur and finally the pulling of the target cast ranked 10th lightning bolt while the bolt travels immediately equipped tankier and cast frank 6 lesser healing wave twice on a warlock that has recently life tapped immediately after cast rank 4 chain heal and then rank 7 earth shock afterwards activate juju flurry and you to escape and lastly repeat rank 7 earth shock until the boss dies let's talk about buffs a character can have a theoretical cap of 32 beneficial buffs prioritize collecting survival buffs before acquiring damage buffs agility for example has the eyelid byproduct of helping with survival and threat however here's a little disclaimer because of the nature and duties of an off tank less damage is taken therefore is not a hundred percent necessary to aim for survival box also some buffs are unobtainable due to certain phase restrictions or inability to stack with other buffs speaking of buffs on the screen right now are buffs that cater to our defensive capabilities some notable buffs are power word fortitude Rumsey rum Black Label flask of Titans and molars Moxie all bolstering our health as for armor it's quite easy to acquire Chris to award and make sure a healer is constantly applying the buff inspiration or ancestral fortitude in terms of absorbing effects at least try and have power words shield active on you the moment a priest has it off cooldown looking at dodge try and get your hands on juju escape and if possible blood kelp elixir of dodging in terms of heal over time spells they're quite self-explanatory if there's a class out there that can cast one on you it should be on you and lastly our damage reduction buffs such as stone skin totem now let's see buffs that help us to generate threat within attack power and strength I suggest battle shell and Pegasus ferocity in the agility category aimed for elixir of mongoose ground score puck essay and grace of air totem for spell crit I recommend slip kick savvy and lastly for intellect buffs at least make sure to have arcane intellect for mana regeneration buffs make sure that a local druid is on standby if in the rare situation you may need mana from him through innervate in terms of spell power aim for best-case-scenario flasks of supreme power and worst case scenario greater arcane elixir next are periodic damage buffs which include a few reflective buffs we've talked about earlier make sure to have a bare minimum of thorns oil of immolation crystals fire static barrier and lightning shield the next category are haste box I recommend not only for you to acquire egg no measu battle chicken but for other allies as well for the chickens bolstering haste effect lastly our buffs that offer a combination of effects get your hands on mark of the wild song flower serenade WarChiefs blessing and rallying cry of the dragon's lair moving on to probably my favorite topic mind control buffing many high-end gilts may want to consider getting certain buffs from Alliance paladins and priests by being mind-controlled by an alliance priest using mind control or with the gnomish mind-control cap this is of course a bit min/max II and will require having cross faction collaboration on classic PvP servers or Gilley's with max level Alliance alts on classic PvE servers in a similar fashion there is also the possibility to mind-control mobs you and your entire raid or group can also gain beneficial buffs by having your priests allies mind control certain mobs and zones dungeons or raids to fully utilize the duration of these buffs you should have warlocks ready to summon you to the raid or dungeon you will be running next our special event buffs that can only be acquired during certain moments on the screen right now are a few events with a few notable buffs since we finished examining buffs it's only natural to explore d buffs having as many d buffs on the boss as possible is of paramount importance when tanking in world of warcraft classic a total of 16 d buffs can be on a single enemy all of the following d buffs benefit us by either increasing our threat or survival and are assumed to be at their maximum rank or talent improvement next let's dive into stat priorities and gearing finding the perfect balance of gear will be the hardest aspect of this subject to this day there is still debate between the usefulness of stamina over Dodge in the tanking community if you are unsure of your guild performance I recommend carrying several focused gear sets a stamina dodge and armor set in your bags to accommodate any encounters that might arise Dodge is a very rare stat to find on good gear without sacrificing in other categories so if there's a piece of gear with Dodge on it cling to it for as long as possible but you can't have too much Dodge we must obtain a perfect balance as previously stated in the early parts of the game for example the buff inspiration bolsters armor but healers don't have much spell crit to activate inspiration therefore for this portion of the game Dodge is more sought-after stamina is also a valuable stat since it not only helps against bosses that deal magical damage but also physical damage dealing bosses unlike armor which is just physical feel free to look at my shaman tank gear list to find the best gear for the encounter that you're attempting when it comes to scoring a piece of gear there are three metrics to use to compare gear tanking score which is best for high melee damage threat score which is best for a high threat if needed and value score which is best in most occasions the value score as a result of adding tanking score and threat score comparing gear using these metrics can be seen in the example to the right feel free to use the shaman tank gear list to compare gear for each slot to determine the best gear for the encounter the next topic is gear sets to illustrate the noticeable differences to give an example of a gear set to the right on image number one is an armor centric set designed for bosses that deal high physical damage but don't require much threat on image number two to the right is a gear set focused on generating threat while retaining some survivability now for some gearing tips when shaman tanking it is sometimes extremely useful to activate a trinket so output for more tanking oriented one and then engage in battle this is called pre activation example of these trinkets can be found to the right of the screen another tidbit is increasing damage via spell power which can be quite advantageous however most gear that provides spell power is cloth this is why you should prioritize male armor to increase survival I also such as farming tanking gear as a rest of shaman while progressing through raids and tank when raid tears are on farm or the raid is comfortable with you attempting and lastly have a spirit an mp5 gear set to restore mana between poles since we talked about gear let's transition into enchants similar to gear enchants must be tailored against these specific boss you will be facing allies can also help us by enchanting their own cloak with the enchant subtlety to avoid constantly having to reinvent a piece of gear to tailor to a specific boss fight I suggest having different versions of that gear in the bank or backpack to save on time and money also I should mention that the talent toughness does not scale with armor enchants the scoring system for enchants is the same for gearing also feel free to use the shaman tanking and checklist to determine the best enchants for each gear slot and for each encounter totems are next on the list our shamanistic brothers from the restoration side can lend a hand in optimizing totem utility so be considerate and compliment each other's strengths within the group keep in mind that can only be one type of totem per shaman so having another shaman in the group is largely welcomed also the totems in our stockpile have different durations and scale with spell damage or similar effects in different ways knowing the idiosyncrasies of each totem is paramount make sure to check out meld arounds totem guide to learn the in-depth usage and strengths of each totem the first type of totem are Earth totems in the number one spot is stone skin totem which provides a decent bulk of melee damage mitigation and generally is placed by the tanking shaman or a fellow shaman with two points in Guardian totems in the enhancement talon tree within the group second is strength of earth totem a great boost and attack power alongside benefiting the damage of other melee classes in the group thirdly is stone claw totem which diverts loose mobs off your tail and quickly allows readjusting of a targets positioning the before last totem is tremor totem which is mainly used for situational moments when the boss encounter has fear charm and sleep mechanics lastly is earth bind totem which is a useful tool for kiting unbound trash in an instance the next type of totem our fire totems in the number one spot we have searing totem which is a pleasant boost to DPS in boss encounters and practical for snapping aggro on a boss with an aggro be set second is fire Nova totem which is ideal for bursting down low HP adds on encounters third is magma totem great for additional damage when tanking multiple mobs fourth is frost resistant totem which is beneficial for fights involving high doses of frost damage for example in naxxramas I should also point out that fire totems are seen as a luxury during boss encounters usually you will not have the mana to spend on them also remember that fire totems have their own threat tables and don't add to your total threat moving on to air totems firstly is grace of air totem it roughly comes out to about 4% dodge and crit agility is always a pleasant stat to have and also is appreciated by the majority of other classes where some air totem is definitely a priority totem within the air types that should be taken seriously second is a wind fury totem unfortunately we are unable to benefit from this totems effect since it's an enchant 2 weapon and we already have an active enchant rockbiter however it is appreciated by melee dps in the group and enforced by a restoration shaman with two points and enhancing totems thirdly is nature resistant totem which is quite advantageous for fights involving hide a nature damage for example a Q 20 and a Q 44th on the list is tranquil air totem every raid group has a fellow shaman putting down this totem to reduce threat however never use this while tanking or when in the tank group within a rate fifth on the list is grounding totem which is very useful for redirecting ranged spells from susceptible mobs and bosses and lastly is a win while totem unfortunately this doesn't see much utility in most fights the last type of totem our water totems in the first spot is mana spring totem a very valuable totem in our arsenal optimally it should be arranged by a resto shaman in the group who has the talent restorations within the restoration dialing tree second is healing stream totem which is typically placed by a rest of shaman if you are both comfortable with not having and improved mana spring totem in this scenario return the favor by placing a regular mana spring totem remember that healing stream totem does not generate any threat thirdly is poison cleansing totem which is indispensable on fights with high poison output for example aq boss's fourth is fire resistant totem which is pragmatic for fights involving high amounts of fire damage for example molten core and Onyxia fifth is mana tide totem which will not be available to you as it is the 31 point in restoration however in the case where you have a resto shaman with it in the group it can be very advantageous to restore mana and the last totem is disease cleansing totem which unfortunately rarely sees the light of day as most rate encounters do not involve disease unless in some dungeons now for professions during the harsh and lengthy process of leveling select herbalism and alchemy a valid case can be made for also having a level 5 fault station permanently in a major city to disenchant on one items and store items at a bank for later use herbalism contributes convenient reagents for alchemy and a strong source of revenue for our eventual endgame professions it also prevents players from spending an exorbitant portion of time pestering strangers in Orgrimmar to craft potions the objective is straightforward gathers substantial supply of gold and a bank full of fruitful potions the rate might need now let's look at those later professions that I was talking about I advise dropping herbalism once the quantity of gold in one's bag is overflowing and adopt the late-game profession engineering to scoop up a few useful tools now I wouldn't be careful if I wasn't thorough let's also explore secondary professions for secondary professions I urge grabbing all of them as they all provide valuable assets in terms of fishing you can form those elusive stones scale eels that are highly contested for flasks of the Titans first aid grants bandages for healing that don't require your mana to use lastly is cooking which provides dragon breath chili a absolute delight as it not only scales with spell damage but also alongside the trinket arcanite dragon links fire increasing debuff the fire debuff also skills with goblin sapper charge as well all of these items nicely combined into a decent boost and threat but be mindful as only one food buff can be active at a time cautiously evaluate the best possible food buff for the specific fight races play a big part in tanking as we as shaman tanks are grasping for any amount of extra efficiency possible as for race choose wisely as once the decision is made there is no going back some players might want to choose a certain race to assure the clearing of a specific boss or raid torrents are considered the most suited race for surviving long fights and for ideally clearing ZG and a queue which will be the first raids where difficulties will arise the 5% HP is great and is inherently based on absolute HP so it will scale with the amount of HP obtained from gear and world buffs in regards to wor stomp be cautious that you cannot dodge block or parry while casting the spell however its overall usefulness outweighs this slight inconvenience the 15 skill increase to herbalism is also helpful and nothing to scoff at while leveling trolls are the second-leading race that converges more on setting up threat instead of having extra health generally thread is not that problematic if you've receiving thread issues though I advocate for troll above all other races berserk intertwine with rockbiter weapon is seen as an emergency button that alleviates healers of anxiety when a group member quickly escalates on the threat list additionally berserk King proves handy against nature immune targets to be as thorough as possible trolls do indeed gain added benefit from spirit because it synergizes with their passive racial regeneration however the amount of spirit when fully buff is insignificant to make a big impact in tanking trolls will also produce more threat than any other race on bosses that are beasts orcs are last on the lineup suddenly they fall short in both survival and threat categories akin to the troll our green comrades focal point is threat at the compromise of potential health points and is seen as a more riskier race option considering the minus 50% to healing from blood theory which is especially detrimental for non attentive healers in all honesty through our rigorous testing they do in fact calm on top of all other races for generating threat but it made the majority of our healers very nervous on the bright side they prove the more effective in the off tank position in conclusion they plunge a way too deep into the situational category to be justified now let's examine talents the first talent build is 14:37 0 the default talent bill centered around this guide calculated as the safest to pursue and viewed as a preliminary starter pack into the world of tanking five months ten months and pre raids this build is highly suggested if you're unsure of an upcoming boss fight or are still in the learning phase of tanking the second Talent build twenty one thirty zero is employed against multiple targets this talent setup is mostly centered around tanking multiple targets and revolves around Chain Lightning proc in with I of the storm as the main conduit for dealing damage and preserving threat on multiple targets because it is not possible to dodge block or parry while casting it is ideal to employ this bill versus mobs that deal little to moderate damage against heavy hitting targets it is advisable to grab the weapon hand off Edward - odd and use eye of the storm procs occasionally during phases with less damage or avoid points an eye of the storm altogether and cater to pro King Edward as much as possible by prioritizing crit and haste feel free to use Rank 1 earth shock to not only save mana but to increase the proc sense of elemental devastation and elemental focus if you don't foresee a dad instant a random mob leaving you to attack a teammate fiery blaze enchantment is also recommended for this type of tanking and possibly scales with elemental fury and elemental focus the last Talent setup is the solution to targets that are heavily resilient or completely immune to nature damage your gear alongside a solid understanding of sean tanking is required since we lose the ability to cast earth shock therefore we will be casting max rank frost shock often and inquire necessary mana related items to back it up this path is frequently taken as a player reaches 3% hit chance from gear among the many other topics that briefly explain potential threats offers also refer to the shaman threat slides we talked about in the beginning a question I get often asked is how do shaman tanks compare defensively and offensively other tanks on the screen right now is a comparison of a shaman tank and a feral druid tank assuming both classes get the appropriate buff and gear obviously the example druid tank can reach high your numbers and has a plethora of defensive abilities but the goal of this is to showcase the class the closest similarity to a shaman in stats across the board that gets the job done in rates rate composition differs with each boss but it's considered a acquired technique that develops over time and reflects the play style of a gilt or rate the image to the right is an example rate composition with a few minor exceptions that differ from the norm this image is by no means the perfect rate composition since rate compositions drastically fluctuate alongside content patch gear experience etc with the raid leaders permission offer your advice on an ideal composition that caters to your needs without overstepping a decent maid will always make sure that most groups have a tranquil air totem provided by a restoration or elemental shaman due to the inconsistency in private server emulation across many servers there are some interesting things that can have significant effects on shaman tanking when playing classic World of Warcraft you should look out for some of these things and if they occur for example does Razer hides armor buff stacked with inspiration or ancestral fortitude can inspiration healing weight and ancestral fortitude be stacked utilizing multiple ranks can rockbiter and win fury proc off of misses dodges or parries does searing totem generate threat for the shaman and/or proc elemental devastation does the Talon toughness skill with Armour granted by agility is the buff cap actually 35 and are some beneficial effects not counted as actual buffs and lastly can additional attacks from a wind fury weapon proc cos weapon procs for example ayran fo and vice-versa alright well that's it for me Mellotron tell us about leveling as a shaman tank thanks Gabriel a lot of information there let's go over how to level as a shaman tank leveling is Shaam tank can be difficult as many groups may think you are not a great tank or subpar suboptimal and that's true in some circumstances and we're gonna read a quote from Kevin Jordan who had the pleasure of interviewing on countdown the classic episode number 98 one thing is stuck into my head what he said was in terms of high-end game mechanics shaman were not intended to be tanks they were intended to tank five man's up until around sunken temple don't let this discourage you you can still tank effectively as a shaman however there are some things you need to keep in mind one is you should really out level the dungeon you're going to do and you should really try to get excellent pieces of gear so that tanking will be much easier for you finally having good friends and guilties in your company will make this a lot easier as they will be patient and assist you in your ventures as tanking as a shaman now for optimal group composition I highly recommend bringing a priest as a healer that's mainly for one reason you're not a warrior or a druid and therefore you don't require being hit to produce rage and therefore threat since your threat is generated from mana usage you can effectively use power word shield on cooldown to mitigate damage and still generate the threat you need as a shaman 10 priests are also just excellent heroes in general and have a lot of unique mechanics and can use fade if they draw too much threat for DPS lot 1 I highly recommend a rogue moreso than a warrior and this is primarily because of vanish and faint both of these abilities will reduce their threat and having DPS class that can CC effectively will really help you if things get hot and heavy when you're tanking as a shaman also if you don't need grace bear totem they're gonna love you for wind fury totem the next DPS spot I would definitely give to a mage food water portals buffs CCI DPS there's only nothing more you can ask for to DPS class and they can also ice block to wipe their aggro and CC and control mobs on a pinch so I would definitely bring a mage for many many reasons and they will also benefit other classes in your group especially the healer as providing for food and water next I would bring either a warlock or a hunter and this is really dependent on me on the dungeon but pet classes are great because they can tank in a pinch it's not really an effective way of tanking but if there's a loose mob somewhere they can definitely grab it and tank it for you also or locks can fear and hunters can trap so you have more CC in there as well now we're all actually better in most circumstances due to their high utility of soul stones health stones and summoning but a threat is an issue 100 may be better due to the feign death and the ground mechanic that all their pets can learn a warlock in order to increase their DPS is not going to use a wood walker so they won't be able to pick up aggro in a pinch as a hunter will now your stat priority as a shaman tank is to have agility over pretty much everything else a jelly-roll proc flurry and therefore allow you to burst threat also agility gives us dodge and armor which of course benefit you as a tank now stamina strength intellect the spell power can be accrued pretty much equally can that be your next most important stat all those things will help you tank in a way the last two things really worried about is attack power in armor you will of course benefit from any extra armor you have but the other stats will increase your threat generation drastically dodge parry crit haste hit and defense are actually more valuable than all the stats and they're in that order so follow the order I show you here but it's gonna be really hard to find these stat static on gear before level 60 or before you hit high-end dungeons and raids so stick to the normal stat priority if you find a piece of gear with dodge on it or parry that's gonna be huge make sure you prioritize those over any other of the stats in the first line of that box now lovely as a shaman of course will change you level and acquire new skills and abilities and irritation will change as well and in addition after level 9 you're gonna get 10 points every level this is huge and putting the breakpoints in the right talents the right times is going to greatly increase your efficacy of tanking however let's be realistic here you're gonna be leveling as well so the talent scheme I'm going to show you in the next slides are going to let you effectively level and tank at the same time some abilities probably will look like they're not great for tanking and other abilities will look optimal for tanking but I'm trying to create a talent build that will let you effectively level as fast you can while still being able to tank and keep in mind as a general rule tanks will often out level the average mob level in dungeons by two to three levels and that's across the board for all tanks this is even more important when tanking as a shaman the reason being is your armor class will be lower than every other tank in the game so be prudent about what level you are when you go into a dungeon make sure you try to out level the average mop level as much as you possibly can while still gaining experience from quests and for mobs in the dungeon now this slide shows every dungeon and reign in the game and they're suggested rage try to get to the upper end of the suggestion level range as much you can while still gaining experience from quests mobs and NPCs pause the video if you need to look at this and plan out your leveling and tanking adventure also before we proceed these are the spell and ability abbreviations that I'll be using in the next slides if you've seen the abbreviation you don't know you can come back to this slide and see what I'm trying to say here most of these are self-explanatory but some may require you to go back and look using abbreviations just save space in the slides so I use abbreviations whenever I can so let's briefly go over a tanking as a shaman before level 10 you won't be doing much tanking here at all actually you may tank quote-unquote harder quest mobs like fizzle and dark storms in the dirt are basically you're gonna just be leveling in this period now for all of these slides will be going over next about ten or so slides we go over as you level you will see an important spells and abilities you will learn in that level range and then a spreadsheet to the right which goes over which ability and rank you're gonna use for certain utility so for example you see rock butter rank one is your weapon enhancement from levels 1 to 7 but level 8 you get rock butter of rank 2 and that will be your up and enhancement so follow this scheme in that level range to see what level you start to use the next rank or if you still use the old rank in that level range there's a lot of abilities when tanking as a shaman where you don't use the highest rank just follow the scheme for the most effective tanking rotation so before we go into levels 10 through 15 you'll notice that now I have talent calculator pictures in HD slides so follow this order of putting your talents in from this slide forward so you'll see here we put 5 points and shield specialization and 1 and thundering strikes I will not go over each talent choice but you'll see it in the image or if you're watching the video just make sure you follow that talent progression in this level range could very likely be your first time tanking you might be doing rage fire chasm and it's a great place to eat your feet way but I wait until level 14 to get new abilities so I wouldn't jump in there at level 13 like most classes would definitely wait till 14 to get in there to get some really awesome abilities like earth shock right 3 and stone skins totem rank two for level range 16 to 20 you will likely make your first journey in the wailing caverns however I would highly recommend waiting into level 18 when you get tremor totem as there a lot of NPCs that can sleep in there in Schreber totem will be very valuable in the dungeon setting for love 21 to 25 I recommend continuing to run wailing caverns if you need more pieces of the druid of the fan gear which is some great leather gear to help you tanking or you may try to brave shadow Fang keeper on level 25 however be careful shadow Fang can be a little tricky in there at level 25 I Pryor recommend going a little bit higher if you want to try it definitely go ahead because the commander's crest is oh so very nice in levels 26 to 30 you're gonna get some interesting new abilities and some higher ranks if you're tanking abilities so I would definitely try to amount in sfk and in black fathom deeps four levels 31 to 35 there really isn't much to do I would just really focus on leveling here and try yourself some new pieces of gear in the process however if you really really want to tank you can try your hand at both number and razor fame crawl here but I would highly recommend waiting until prior levels 36 or 37 to try these two dungeons but good luck so levels 36 to 40 you're gonna get a boatload of new abilities and you're gonna get oily down the storm strike here so you've almost completed the enhancement tree here you're gonna put a few more points in before you move over to restoration but in this level range you're gonna be able to confidently tank both Norma and RFK as well as trying your hand in SM graveyard and library you can even try to even do armory there are some excellent pieces that drop of Harrod for your leather DeMeo transition off that final boss so if you really are feeling squirrely I would definitely do that definitely try to kill herand a few times for those pits for those loot drops alright four levels 41 to 45 you'll get some other interesting abilities and you'll be able to finish off enhancement also in this level range I would recommend focusing on tanking scarlet monastery armory if you still need pieces from Herod Cathedral definite for the shield off of the last boss and you're gonna also be tanking RFD razor fin downs so have fun tanking those dungeons for levels 46 to 50 you're gonna be moving down into the restoration tree grabbing some talents to help you with your mana usage in this level range I recommend Phil to see one running alderman if you get tired of that I would definitely do some gentle aura there are some quests via Raymond tusk village that really make gentle or worthwhile and it's your chance of doing some outdoor climb and content which will be good for tanking as well okay fellows 51 to 55 we're almost there in this level range I recommend tanking some of the higher level dungeons like mara wolf rock and parts of Blackrock depths and sunken temple this is where things start to really get harder as mob tendencies will increase and mob abilities will get harder to deal with so you may want to highly out level the average level ranges of dun Nunes to effectively tank them so from level ranges 56 to 60 you will be tanking pretty much everything everything is open here you're gonna start with Blackrock depths tower Mall Stratholme and skull amounts and once you have the effect of gear you're gonna move into ten man raids I wouldn't recommend heading into anything higher than that unless you started to heal raids forty man raids to gather gear that will help you tank rates you saw in the beginning parts of the shaman tanking guide you really don't tank raids as a shaman unless you out geared them so in the farming phase I wouldn't jump right into you know just because you've tanked some high-end five man's don't jump into molten core and say well I can tank them no you had the clear molten core get all the gear from molten core and when you're farming it that's when you're gonna try to off tank or main tank some bosses this is where a lot of the journey will stop for most shaman tanks but if you want to keep going make sure you're in the right kill to make sure you're able to tank raids when they're on farm status also you'll notice at the bottom here there are some things like race where children rank 3 strengthen birth totem rank 5 healing wave rank 10 and flame shock rank 6 which will acquire tablets for you to learn them you can't learn this from your trainer you're definitely gonna get these when you first hit 60 so if you want to get these higher level items you're gonna have to run raids or buy them from the auction house but you've reached level 60 congratulations if you still want to continue to tank make sure you watch the beginning of this guide or cap referring goes over how to effectively tank as a shaman endgame
