Abandoned VW Bus Rescued From Woods | Rare 1963 15 Window Volkswagen Deluxe | RESTORED

[Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so as you guys know we're big volkswagen fans around the shop today we're headed off on a pretty local fine to check out a really rare split window volkswagen bus now my cousin found this out in the woods and thought it'd be something right up our alley so we're just headed out there to check it out lay eyes on it a little closer and hopefully we can bring it back with us i guess that's her huh there she is brought some hot weather with us i hope you don't mind how's it going how's it going heaven pretty cool man what do you think about it looks like it's been there a while i figure it's probably uh it's got the split window on it so i would think it's early 60s maybe late 50s on it we were wondering we knew we could ask you or you'd know yeah yeah because later on they they was just a one-piece glass they call a bay window the split windows to me are so much cooler looking well they always built with the vehicle it's kind of just a split window style yeah yeah oh this one's got the rounded corner glass back here that's pretty cool oh yeah no engine huh no no engine yeah it looks like all the wheels and tires are here yeah part of the interior looks like some kids might have got out here shot the windows out at one time right yeah huh yeah i think the chore on this one may be just trying to i mean it's not most time we got one little tree but i don't think we'll have to take that down but it's just getting it out in one piece on this side yes that in this ditch area right here yeah yeah kind of a low spot there here but yeah one piece is yeah that's the main thing well that door over there even on pin this one wouldn't [Music] i don't know huh oh yeah this wheel here is halfway in the ground tell you well we can go in from the back probably and push that door open oh yeah you're braver than i am i don't know if the word bravery is the right word or not it helped to have it open to steer it around the window the window will that help can i get a cheeseburger fry i think we could probably just screech through there now or the front have access through the windshield too who knows if it'll even try to steer well we brought some extra wheels and tires just in case these don't take care i know it'd be a lot easier to have something that's getting up off the ground maybe jack that other side up and i wouldn't doubt the brakes are a little locked up yeah i bet so it's pretty cool man cool i think it'll work for us they're pretty light vehicles i'm hoping it'll slide right out of here for you yeah yeah i wish it had the motor but i mean those ain't hard to come by no they're not yeah the original one yes yes and we're still looking for anything and everything right i see there's some other stuff out here yes there is there's a couple of them i think there's like four or five back there oh yeah you have to check them out carefully look at them real quick no i don't care at all check them out hi i'm kevin malden come across these vehicles here from a friend and i thought lance would be interested in them now he's one that's going to do something with them that's why i want him out here to see what he can do about getting them out safely and getting a shot of these other ones maybe to preserve what's here before we start moving it see show grandkids kids all that and uh i think it would be good more up in here yes and there's a couple more in here this is where you want to check it out definitely a lot cooler up underneath this shade oh gmc yes it's a little old what do you think 50 50 something model yeah it's be 47 to 53 because it's got the split glass here and 54 and 55 they made just a one-piece class a lot of people don't realize they made that truck in 55 as well you know a lot of people think the old 55 is a completely different body style but they made both that year that is cool the old silver streak and i guess it had a straight eight really instead of like a v8 or whatever it's a straight eight yeah motors in it that buick special i had had a straight eight that's 50 30. they say these engines are the coolest sounding engine you'll ever hear so i've known the owner of these vehicles since we were kids in school i always drove three quarter ton chevrolets with loud pipes cowboy trucks and uh always burning out having fun mudding and uh he knows i'm in the cars and my family's in the car so he figured what better person to tell me and see what we could do with these besides hauling them off the scrap yeah i'm glad you reached out to us on that old bus there i wish it was in here be a little cooler but it'd probably be more work too right yeah exactly well i think we'll get back over there and start making a game plan at least getting it out of the hole and maybe switch out the wheels and i don't think it'll be too bad as long as we don't get the trailer landed in that ditch exactly and you're on airbags and everything you're not solid like i am i don't think it'll be too bad so i'm really glad that kevin reached out to me to come look at this old volkswagen wasn't really sure exactly what it was until we got out here i'm kind of into anything volkswagen but that being that this is an old split window bus it's just really up our alley so i love that it has these corner glasses here which is going to make this a 15 window bus you don't see a whole lot of these out there now i hate that it's missing the engine in it but finding these little air cooled engine is no problem at all so i'm sure we can find one to put in there find the engine hatch cover as well but the trick now is just to go ahead and get this vehicle moved out from where it's sitting and maybe we can winch it across this ditch and not have no difficulty with that you think start on this side i think so those might air up but yeah i doubt they'd hold it very long everything's nice and hot that's for sure i'm just concerned about how rusted everything is i can get it up a little bit to get on something stronger let me go grab a block where i can maybe get up underneath uh will it come up anymore at all not really on let's say your shovel all right you can try to let that down i may have to dig up over this side get underneath that front beam this ground ain't too hard i spoke too soon uh watch for critters problem is i'm gonna have to dig out such a big hole unless we think we can come in that way yeah i'm saying we may be able to come in [Applause] need some help so heavy i think they're just more warm than heavy a little more trying to feel where where we need to be because i can't see nothing let's start scheduling this stuff around winter time i think we picked the wrong time of day didn't we i don't know if right there on that bumper it feels solid but like i say it's hard to say yeah a lot better than where we were over on the other side [Applause] it's cool that it has a door come open yeah ooh about to fall off yeah yeah bust it off there man i think holding this works being up up there about to lose the door what a big ol hole up underneath this side that's the first time it's ever moved probably moving 30 years yeah it's not 40. we can probably take this off and then dig around and get that other one up underneath there okay i'll grab the impact [Music] i'll go get that in there oh i'm gonna have to jacket it i'm gonna have to jack it up a little more okay yeah cuz we're gonna have to dig such a well we're gonna have to put something underneath it won't jack no higher so i'm gonna have to find another way to bite get a bite on it all right you can let that down should be able to get underneath that beam now as long as i can get the jack that far underneath it wow oh that door is literally about to come on wonder if it will come removable doors that the thing's really rare wow it is rare i didn't know what i had oh they would look good with the doors off driving down the road like a like a jeep yeah and there's your ac 55 toy blows good around 55. find a spot yep see there's a big old hole some kind of a den on that other side over there oh yeah there's something up in the middle lance oh ness yeah i'm kind of a nest there's that front edge right there if you can get it yeah i think i can get it now there we go anti-theft i hope we didn't cover up our lug there nuts go look like that other one will come off or will we have to uh yeah it'll come off you have to do it the same way but almost need i guess i'll throw this dirt back up underneath this in this hole right kind of before we let it down yeah kind of help us climb out of it [Applause] so [Applause] one down phew that's at least there wasn't no roots or any trees close by that had it wrapped around stuff too yeah it's not like us to pull something out of the woods without cutting the tree yeah but i don't think that'll be in the way i think i can make this one it's a little smaller tire oh yeah i ain't even checked to see if this drums if their brakes are locked up but you know [Applause] [Applause] phew [Applause] oh look at that the other one time did y'all check i didn't check the other one kind of filled it in with dirt though up underneath it so it might be hard to steering turns just anytime it doesn't that one's locked up i feel like it will turn pretty easy though that one tire is low do you want to go ahead and put it on uh we can air it up out there shoot it there with the trailer about time for a water break we ain't five minutes into it i'm trying to get up underneath that transaxle back here i'm gonna stick go right in the middle and get them both baby only thing is they'll drop won't they as we're coming up i think we'll be good that's good ah i believe so i'm another other tires are a little smaller this one rolls good that thing should pull out there pretty easy this one moved for about an eighth of a turn and then it stopped but he said that one's locked up over there well it turned just about an eighth of a turn and then it stops i bet once we start pulling on them they'll come free sure one more huh want me to get one sure i would but as bad as i'm sweating i'd get electrocuted [Music] and these came off a lot easier without going yeah a lot of times yeah i was afraid that was like a break yeah [Music] one of volkswagen's biggest blunders was not having some kind of a little bit of a stud or something that would catch that when you lifted it up there yeah the only way i found to do is put one and let it swing yep well hey these are a little bit easier than newer volkswagens because they're inset right you've got to try them yeah i think that boat we can just manhandle it and slide it around maybe we all done did all the hard work all the hard work i know what kevin's doing he doesn't found the shade spot so yeah taking a little longer i would have the one you just made it look easy got lucky yeah it already looks better down there it does it changed the whole looks of it i'm excited that at least this side's rolling so the driver's side should be easy to load yeah i know it don't set up i guess we could have the engine in the back the back would sit a little lower but you don't want to try to slide that boat over because i feel like if i could get my trailer right here rather than having to get it right over this hill do you want me to drive it or use that in and we'll pull it around all right so i just wonder if it's coming apart evan you grab here right there and one two three hold on i gotta fight with that spill in there okay how's that i think that'll work that should work if i can't back up to that i don't need to be back in the trailer huh right the only thing is you're gonna be sitting in a yeah but if you can kind of come high yeah right through there maybe we can steer it up on there i'm gonna go ahead and grab the strap and get it up on there so we were able to get a jack up underneath this bus and get it up and switch the wheels out we lucked out and the driver's side wheels are both actually turning the brakes ain't locked up and on the passenger side they're locked up but i don't think it's going to take much persuasion to get them to turn so just going to hook a strap to this back my trailer up to it i think if all goes well and that beam is not rusted out on the sheet metal there we should be able to hook to it winch it up on the trailer and be headed out here pretty quick that worked that'll work a little crooked but i think we'll be all right well i think it almost had to be to stay out of that little gully wash there oh yeah [Music] get up underneath there i think that front beam i'll crawl up underneath there gonna walk that winch out you can no little spider right here what i can tell it don't look terrible underneath actually looks better underneath than it does on the outside that's unusual usually when they're buried up that much in the dirt bottom's all eat out hey lance yeah there's a piece i think there's a piece of it right here same color oh yeah yep may need a shovel i'm trying to figure out what it is unless it's that back part yeah i bet it's that back part that goes right behind the bumper here i don't know that back door crazy makes me wonder if the trunk lids are that's what i was just supposed to say how in the world you see that i was coming back just to make sure we had all the tools and stuff and i glanced i seen that color and i thought that looks like the same color as the i found a piece through the background maybe that sharp shooter may have to leave it that'd be better than that dull shooter i'm using get that shovel up underneath it there see if i can get that root right there [Music] i don't think it's salvageable if they do get it out it might be a bunch of they must be old seed or something there until you see those little [Applause] there it goes [Applause] sure enough i found an engine in here be nice wow that go with it that goes with it nothing else you can make a uh out of it huh yeah souvenir huh i wonder if this was old seats that maybe i bet it wasn't in it i bet if a person got out here with a metal detector and a shovel tempted to come out here with something and look around that's what i was i wonder what's all in that creek there's a lot of cow bones down there i know oh yeah i walked down around the bend a little bit and there's cows bones and stuff on my feet well good eye good night mate thank you mike you want to try to pull it and see what it does i said i think it'll steer yeah it seems like i'm moving earlier you don't have to steer much you got pretty straight there she comes feels like something's turning on that other side maybe because we don't feel like we're dragging the front one's just dragging completely and we just landed in the holes now of the front tires back one's turning over there i think we're gonna have to push it both turn it yeah the bat both back ones are i think we're gonna have to push it if you want to run this or my wireless controller's messed up on me just down there all right here we go this way there you go should be good [Music] should work i guess technically he was the first one to drive it i didn't even get to drive it that went too easy look at this frog oh man that's gonna have to be some kind of a nickname for this look it's silver too yeah crazy i guess that goes with it too that goes with it i keep getting all things it's got something on it gives itself a name yeah kind of gives it a character on it i think there's still some life left in it you know y'all know what you're doing we'll get it back to the shop and find out for sure find us a little single single poured air cool motors remember those little ones you used to have that were short yeah those little short buses yeah you had one two of them let's get some straps on this side and get out of hot weather well i have to say this has probably been one of the easiest rescues of a vehicle we've ever pulled out of the woods seeing that it's the rare 15 window model and the roofs already rusted out this seems like the perfect candidate to me to go ahead and make it a 23 window bus so i guess only time will tell we'll get it back to the shop see what all we got to work with and make a decision from there we hope that you like this video don't
