bye answer us o lord for your mercy is kind in the abundance of your mercies look upon us in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the grace of our lord jesus christ and the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all you're all very welcome from us this morning also those on watching a live stream brothers and sisters let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done and in what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life lord have mercy christ have mercy lord have mercy let us pray almighty ever-living god look with compassion on our weakness and ensure us your protection by stretching forth the right hand of your majesty through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god ever and ever the first reading is from the prophet isaiah the lord says this if you do away with the oak the clenched fist the wicked word if you give your bread to the hungry and relief to the oppressed your light will rise in the darkness and your shadows become like noon the lord will always guide you giving you relief in desert places he will give strength to your bones and you shall be like a watered garden like a spring of water whose waters never run dry you will rebuild the ancient ruins build up on the old foundations you will be called breach mender restorer of ruined houses if you refrain from trampling the sabbath and doing business on the holy day if you call the sabbath delightful and the day sacred to the lord honorable if your honor if you honour it by abstaining from travel from doing business and from gossip then you shall find happiness in the lord and i will lead you triumphant over the heights to the of the land i will feed you on the heritage of jacob your father for the mouth of the lord has spoken the word of the lord teach me your way o lord that i may be faithful in your sight teach me your way o lord that i may be faithful in your sight turn your ear o lord and give answer for i am poor and needy preserve my life for i am faithful save the servant who trusts in you teach me your way o lord that i may be faithful in your sight you are my god have mercy on me lord for i cry to you all day long give joy to your servant o lord for do you i lift up my soul teach me your way o lord that i may be faithful in your sight o lord you are good and forgiving full of love to all who call give heed o lord to my prayer and attend to the sound of my voice teach me your way o lord that i may be faithful in your sight please stand to greet the gospel glory to you word of god lord jesus christ i do not wish the sinner to die says the lord but to turn to me and live glory to you word of god lord jesus christ the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke jesus noticed a tax collector levi by name sitting by the customs house and said to him follow me and leaving everything he got up and followed him in his honor levi held a great reception in his house and with them at table was a large gathering of tax collectors and others the pharisees and their scribes complained to his disciples and said why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners jesus said to them in reply it is not those who are well who need the doctor but the sick i have not come to call the virtuous but sinners to repentance the gospel of the lord as you know nobody likes tax collectors anywhere but in in in the holy on the land the tax julius caesar had got rid of a lot of this a lot of the the robbery that went down by tech but i heard the greats tax collectors were royal officials and they subcontracted it to other minor officials who subtracted some of the money to themselves that's why they didn't they weren't too fond of them and so on but then if we just think and mark makes the point that matthew had his tax collecting booth beside the sea because there was attacks to be made on on on fish so you can imagine some of the apostles weren't too keen on him either then the point then is but but there's a big thing in the old testament psalm 1 for example psalm 10 make it clear don't hang around with sinners that's that's really bad news and jesus reverses that he does hang around as they accuse him of with sinners and we've seen earlier on in the same gospel luke that he's had a great success the famous one you remember is zacchaeus also a tax collector so jesus's point is that he's there for everyone and particularly for ones who are open to his words of mercy and then if we just think of how zacchaeus gave up everything so does matthew and that's i think why the church put this gospel on early on in lent because the big point here apart from everything else is matthew leaves everything he leaves everything behind anything that would be holding himself from god from jesus so maybe that's my message for myself today what am i not leaving behind blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you fruit of the earth and work of human hands it will become for us the bread of life by the mystery of this world blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you fruit of the vine and work of human hands it will become our spiritual drink with humble spirit and contrite heart may we be accepted by you o lord and may our sacrifice in your sight this day be pleasing to you lord god wash me oh lord for my pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father accept we pray o lord the sacrifice of conciliation and praise and grant that cleansed by its working we may offer minds well pleasing to you through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for through bodily fasting you restrain our faults raise up our minds and bestow both virtue and its rewards through christ our lord through him the angels praise your majesty dominions adore and powers tremble before you heaven unto the virtues of heaven and the blessed seraphim worship together with exaltation may our voices we pray join with theirs in humble praise as we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy oh lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith when we eat this bread and drink this cup we proclaim your death o lord until you come again therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and anthony our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us we lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and the peace of the lord be with you always lamb of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us lamb of god you take away the sins of the world
