interesting if you've ever enjoyed painting in your house and i noticed a number of snickers because no one enjoys that right but we need help in painting we are redoing our family building next door and uh there's lots of opportunities to paint um you don't need to be highly skilled to do that we have all the the gear if you could come on out and join us you can just go on the church website you can register there saturdays especially is when we could use some help and you can find out more information on the the church website uh we do have some breakfast sandwiches besides donuts in the cafe after service if you want to stop by for a breakfast sandwich uh there are some of those that are available and uh you can stop by and have your hunger satisfied there with that so before we have our reading this morning we have the privilege of dedicating a young one to the lord so will rebecca our say bring mom and dad up and let's dedicate yeah over there unless you want to climb over the barrier here i don't think you want to do that so who's who's the family here that's all right good to see you guys good morning this is cynthia and shawn thank you oh look a little she's all dressed up and she's got her finery on look at that what a cutie hi sweetie pie [Music] you know when we dedicate children we we we don't baptize infants and children because we believe that baptism is for believers those that make a decision for themselves to follow the lord even in those churches and traditions that do baptize children typically when they get to be older in their early teen years they have what's called a confirmation class it's kind of a way for them to say yes what my parents did for me back then is my choice as well but we believe that the bible says that baptism is something that's to be done by a person that has received christ as their lord and savior but what we do practice here is the dedication of our children and our families to the lord amen as parents say i believe in jesus and i want to raise my child as we saw a couple of weeks ago in ephesians chapter 6 the beginning of those there that says that you know parents raise your children in the nurture and the admonition of jesus christ bring them up bringing them before the lord diligently parenting them as a mom and dad not being a friend we start out by being parents to our children and transition later as we build that relationship of maturity with them as as a brother or a sister in christ and so cynthia and sean are here to dedicate little rebecca to the lord and really what we're dedicating is we're dedicating them aren't we to raise her in the nature of christ you know sweetie pie oh you want to you can just stay right there i might have to hold her the whole time tonight you know some some children that we dedicate their they when the parents go to hand them to me the child's like no way so it's great to have little rebecca be so friendly this morning cute little cute little sweater let's pray father thank you for the gift of life that you give each life being unique special worth so much that you jesus would go to the cross and shed your blood that each of us could have eternal life you came so that little rebecca could fulfill her unique place and your plan for the ages and so lord we pray that you would give to her mom and dad the wisdom and the skill to be able to raise her in the knowledge of you to bring her up as paul says in the nurture and the admonition of jesus christ would you give them great wisdom and skill in discerning what her strengths are that they can encourage those and where she is weak and needs to bring these things within her before you for your change lord for your editing that you give them grace to be able to be a part of your plan for their daughter bless their home lord bless their relationship that they can be a good example to her of what it means to walk with you as a man and as a woman we pray this in jesus name amen thank you so much absolutely i have this for you thank you all right let's stand as we read from ephesians chapter 6 this morning verse 10 well-known passage of scripture the apostle paul says finally my brethren be strong in the lord and in the power of his might put on the whole armor of god that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil for we do not wrestle against flesh and blood but against principalities against powers against the rulers of the darkness of this age against spiritual hosts of wickedness and the heavenly places again that phrase remember we saw earlier i mean the spiritual realm verse 13 therefore take up the whole armor of god that you may be able to withstand in the evil day and having done all to stand and then note that beginning with verse 14 he goes on and he begins to describe the pieces of the armor which we'll get into next week lord we pray that this well known oft studied passage of scripture would remind us of the reality of the spiritual realm and the contest that each of us is caught up in that we might remember that christ has won and we live from his victory renew our minds lord according to your truth we pray set us free from the lies and deceits of the enemy we ask in jesus name amen go and have a seat following the surrender of japan at the end of world war ii ships went out all over the pacific to wherever japanese soldiers had been stationed hundreds of islands in the pacific and sometimes large sometimes small detachment of soldiers had been left there many of them did not know the war had come to an end communications had broken down towards the end of the war and these soldiers simply did not know that the war was over and so these ships went out with japanese soldiers to tell their fellows that the war was over that japan had lost unfortunately not all of those soldiers stationed on those islands got the word leaflets were dropped from airplanes written in japanese to inform them that the war was over but many of those soldiers believed it was a lie that they were trying to be enticed to just come out in the open where they could be captured or or killed and so it wasn't until 30 years later on march 5th of 1974 that a soldier by the name of onoda in the philippines finally came out and surrendered uh to the filipinos saying that he had been waiting for 30 years and realized that finally the war was probably over and came forward a few months after that in indonesia a private by the name of nakamura toruro came out of his hut one morning to find himself surrounded by indonesian soldiers all with their guns pointed at him he was there a japanese soldier still fighting in his mind 30 years later when he was asked why didn't you surrender earlier he said well i i thought that the leaflets that had fallen from the airplanes were lies my last order was i was to stay here and hold my post until i was relieved and no one ever came and relieved me he turned over his gun it was still well maintained with his last five rounds of ammunition in his mind he said it was impossible that japan would surrender could lose the war friends the cross of christ was the decisive battle in the long war between god and satan christ's victory means that the war is won you and i as followers of christ are on the winning side but the devil refuses to accept defeat he struggles on the war is won but it's not over god calls us to take a stand and to enforce christ's victory as much as we might wish otherwise there is a war on right now on our planet there are some 20 armed conflicts with annual casualties of over a thousand people 20 of them there's another 40 with annual casualties under a thousand but the war that i'm talking about isn't the one of those 60 that are fought with bullets and guns the war that i'm referring to is a spiritual war that began with lucifer's rebellion it's the unending battle between the kingdoms of god and satan that's caused all of the evil and the pain and the sorrow and anguish all of the suffering that history has seen that war has its roots in the beginning of time satan was originally a cherub named lucifer now when i say cherub please don't picture cupid and when i say cherub you know many people picture oh that's one of those fat little babies that flies around on tiny pink wings you know we refer to a cute baby as cherubic and it's really a misuse of the word in the bible the cherubim cherub singular cherubim plural the cherubim are well think of them like super angels they have incredible power and immense glory and whenever we see them in scripture they're always surrounding god's throne rather like a ceremonial bodyguard lucifer was their chief he's called the anointed cherub who covers meaning that he had a special role and that he was over the other cherubim he by his description in isaiah 14 and ezekiel 28 we get the sense that he was the worship leader in heaven responsible for leading the adoration of god on the part of all of the angels but something happened within him pride took over and he decided that rather than being the worship leader he wanted to be the object of worship and so he rebelled and he persuaded a third of the angels to join in his insurrection it was put down and they were exiled from their privileged position lucifer became satan the adversary those fallen angels became the demons and they continued to oppose god but since they can't act directly against god they go after the next best thing those that bear god's image the objects of god's love and intentions us as radiation is the fallout for nuclear war all of history's grief and sorrow is the fallout of the spiritual war now paul wants the ephesians to know that the gospel not only converted them from being sinners to saints in christ they move from being victims to victors satan has lost but he refuses to surrender so you and i get to enforce christ's victory first in ourselves and then help others to find their victory in christ so look at what he says now in verse 10. finally my brethren be strong in the lord and in the power of his might be careful now and note that all of the words are important in verse 10. paul is not a coach in the team room at halftime you know trying to to pump up the team to go out and to to win the championship paul is not maximus here that's trying to you know hype up the gladiators as they're about to go into the arena he's not william wallace riding back and forth on his horse saying to the ephesians be strong it's literally be strengthened and here's the crucial part the the the point of emphasis in verse 10 that we are to be strengthened in the lord and in the power of his might friends our strength comes from where everything else in ephesians comes from being in christ please guard against that thought that you can take on the enemy on your own you can't martin luther in that majestic hymn a mighty fortress is our god has this line for still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe his craft and power are great and armed with cruel hate on earth is not his equal the bible describes the devil as cunning he's subtle and shrewd he has thousands of years of observing human behavior he's read our books he's watched our movies he can't read our minds but he can make a good guess at what we're thinking you know why because he suggest just suggested what we think it's called temptation please hear me satan cannot read your mind but can he make a good guess at what you're thinking absolutely because he's watched humans for thousands of years he knows us really well and he has suggested what we should think about in the form of temptation he's patient he knows what works with us he knows what doesn't work he takes his time setting up conspiracies to bring us down but here's the point we don't face him in our strength we stand in the strength and the victory of christ who's already defeated the devil if you enter the octagon and take on the ufc world champion you're not going to do very well now look around some of us are going to do a little bit better than others but looking at y'all you know what nope sorry you're all losing if you enter the octagon with the ufc champion it's not going to be pretty but if the ufc champion goes up against an 800 grizzly it's not going to be pretty the other direction you and i are flyweights compared to satan but satan doesn't even tip the scale compared to jesus in colossians chapter 2 paul says this you who were dead in sins god has made alive together with christ having forgiven those sins he's forever wiped out the record of our wrongs having nailed it to the cross there christ disarmed principalities and powers and demonstrated his victory for all to see in his resurrection that word disarmed there in colossians 2 is a military word it means to strip an enemy of his weapons to render him powerless when an enemy surrendered in ancient warfare and even up through renaissance times when the the war was over uh the enemy would line up literally line up with their weapons and come before the commander of the conqueror and they would literally lay them down if they were a sword or a spear they would lay them down and make a pile of them if they were rifles muskets they would come and they would they would lay them down last would be the defeated general who would come pull out his sword and lay it on the pile and the modern era would come an unholster a sidearm turn it around and hand the handle to them if a defeated army and general was too proud to surrender their arms guess what they were taken from them satan was given authority by adam god gave dominion of earth to adam what did adam do with it he surrendered it to satan when he rebelled satan had authority over this world christ came as a man to undo what the first man lost that's why jesus is called the last adam he came and he reclaimed man's lost dominion satan does not have any more authority jesus took his authority from him he has rendered him powerless he's been disarmed we need to hear that satan does not have any authority he does not have any power so you might say well he certainly seems powerful to me because i get tempted and i still sin so that seems like what's going on there let me tell you what's going on the one thing satan still has is his lying mouth that's why peter describes him as a lion going about roaring seeking whom he weigh what devour and who does he devour those that listen to his roars he is a liar he is the source of deceit he has no power who has the power you do you have the power i feel like i should say you got the power isn't that a song um it is now uh you have the power you are a human being with the ability the power to choose do your choices affect consequences absolutely every single one of them you see he has no power you have the power the power to choose because what you choose you put into action and that bears consequences you have the power he has none he wants it so what does he do he lies to you to get you to lend him your power that's why the key for us is truth to have our minds renewed so that we would not listen to his lies we would know them for what they are and we wouldn't choose according to his plan he has been disarmed but he fights on like those japanese soldiers on the islands of the pacific though he's been defeated satan fights on our victory in spiritual warfare lies in realizing who and what we are in christ standing our ground in his victory now we're going to see how this plays out next week as we take a look at the pieces of the armor of god but for now take note that our strength lies in christ our victory he's already won verse 11 put on the whole armor of god that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil again in the verses that we'll look at next sunday paul describes the armor it ensures that we can stand against the enemy's assault paul wrote this while he was a prisoner in rome he was chained to one of the members of the praetorian guard the royal party bodyguard that served as the law enforcement for the city of rome now strict rules in the roman army said that when a soldier was on duty he had to wear his a complete set of armor paul had spent a lot of time in the presence of roman soldiers he knew their kit well and he saw it as an amazing illustration of god's provision for you and i to walk in victory one of the reasons that rome conquered as much as they did and held it for as long as they did was because their armor and their tactics were superior to everyone else years of innovation saw the evolution of roman armor that was simply better than anybody they met on the field and by the first century when paul wrote this that armor was at its peak the armor of god protects us from the notice what it says here the wiles the schemes of the devil oh he's wily all right he's a schemer he's not a street fighter he's not a brawler that's just randomly choosing victims satan doesn't rush willy-nilly into battle he plans he schemes he strategizes he plays the long game but god gives us the gear to defeat all of his schemes paul wants to make sure that we understand who we're really competing with and so notice what he says in verse 12 we do not wrestle against flesh and blood but and implied there is that we do wrestle against principalities and powers against the rulers of the darkness of this age against spiritual hosts of wickedness and the heavenly realm the real battle isn't with people can i get an amen louder the real battle isn't with people that's right we need to be reminded of that whatever conflict whatever the strife human beings aren't the enemy the enemy is not democrats or republicans or liberals or progressives the enemy isn't russian or chinese or iranian the russian isn't muslims excuse me the enemy isn't uh muslims or or hindus the enemy isn't white or black or brown or red or yellow the enemy isn't in the white house or in the house next door think about who wrote this this is the apostle paul who had ample reason to regard people as the problem he had been harassed by all kinds of people jews and gentiles in one city he was stoned and left for dead in other cities he was beaten with rods twice there was a plot to assassinate him paul suffered greatly at the hands of others but he refused to get bitter and see people as the enemy brothers and sisters don't lose sight of this our enemy is spiritual he often comes at us through people but they are not the enemy they are victims victims of his lies duped into siding with him in the war on god but god defeats the devil by winning people by saving them we don't win by defeating people but by seeing them one to faith in jesus christ now think about this imagine you a follower of christ loving the lord and facing persecution maybe from your boss at work uh your boss has seen your bumper stickers on your car uh you seen your bible in the backseat of your car and mocks you mercilessly maybe even it's cost you in terms of your job maybe a raise or a promotion because you've been overlooked because you're a believer and you know that's why and it's so easy to look at that supervisor and think well that rat he should burn in hell forever let me tell you a sweeter revenge realizing that the real enemy is the spirit animating your boss that your boss has been lied to and that jesus christ poured out his precious blood that your boss would spend eternity in heaven you know the sweetest revenge is not revenge on your boss it's revenge on satan that stirred him up the sweetest revenge is to see your boss in church with his hands raised worshiping god that's the best revenge of all we need to see people as god sees them pray that you god would open your eyes to see that people that we read about in the news and we want to despise for their idiocy for their bad decisions for their crimes for their heinous behavior and we look at them and go oh god get them yeah god get them into heaven that's the best revenge of all the revenge on our real and only enemy satan that's some good preaching right there just now just just please don't don't don't encourage me with your applause what are you doing paul speaks of our spiritual adversary is a vast well-ordered host here verse 12. well satan likes to pawn himself off as as god's opposite he's not he's he's a a creature he's a created being he's not god's equal not even close the closest to satan's opposite would be the archangel michael unlike god satan isn't on the present he's not all powerful all-knowing he can only be in one place at a time but he tries to imitate god in everything that he does because his arrogance his pride he puffs himself up in his own mind and tries to do the same with our idea of him he can only be in one place at a time he's a created being but he tries to spread his influence through through demons who who enact his will who are in league with him they form a global web of evil each with an assignment they're a kind of spiritual al qaeda and isis carrying out attacks all over and while the adversary is a vast host of evil how you and i experience battle it's not on a massive battlefield where two armies face off against each other at distance take shots at each other know the way that you and i experience battle is very personal isn't it it's face to face one on one paul calls it a wrestling contra contest we wrestle not against flesh and blood against people but we are wrestling against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the spiritual realm i wrestled in school so i understand the idiom here it's this wrestling is both a team and an individual sport there are 10 weight classes and each bout uh the wrestlers face off with somebody on the other team from their weight class and the winning wrestler puts up points for his team so he wins his match but he's also winning for his side christian how you're doing in your spiritual contest is either putting up points for team jesus or los diablos who are you putting up points for let's be sure we're putting up points for team jesus verse 13 therefore take up part of the armor of god is that what it says take up those pieces that are convenient take up those parts of the armor that are are comfy that make you look pretty now let's take up the what whole armor of god that you may be able to withstand in the evil day and having done all two stand when the battle is over how do you know who the winner is last man standing the enemy lies defeated or has quit the field paul tells the ephesians and the spirit says to us when all is said and done you be the last one standing and the way that we do that is by clothing ourselves and all of the gear that god provides we take up the whole armor of god which is what we are going to look at next week as we describe the pieces of the armor um i i know some of you know this over the years i have collected a complete set of roman armor and i'm gonna have it here for you all to be able to look at because it's what paul is looking at as he's penning these words and using the pieces of the roman kit the panoply as descriptions and when you begin to look at them and understand how they were used they make great analogies for what the lord has provided for us to be victorious in spiritual warfare you know we just commemorated the 20th anniversary of 9 11 and the beginning of what's called the war on terror some years ago a retired general who had been involved in planning the war on terror was asked by a reporter if he thought we could win the war the general said he didn't know for sure but that he had his doubts that we would i have good news about the real war the one that all the wars that history has seen are just skirmishes in we win because christ has already won the decisive battle and soon he will come to enforce his victory to put down once and for all satan's rebellion you and i have the privilege of living in the era i believe with every fiber of my being that you and i are going to see the day that christ comes and says to satan buddy you're done i love another line in that great hymn of martin luther's a mighty fortress is our god the prince of darkness grim we tremble not for him his rage we can endure for lo his doom is sure one little word will fell him amen let's be strong in the lord and in the power of his might we fight from the position of christ's victory amen father we thank you for being reminded of what is true and we heed the exhortation of the apostle paul to be strengthened with that which comes from being in christ we are a new creation the oldest past behold all things have become new our life is in you your life your victorious conquering life is in us lord we pray that the times that we have forgotten who the real enemy is and gone to war with people that you would forgive us and henceforth allow us to be able to see people as victims and be reminded who our real enemy is and that the real victory comes not not by defeating people but seeing them one to you we're gonna worship now i didn't say amen because we're still communicating communing with the lord amen we're going to worship him now and as we do our worship is a declaration of christ's victory he has won over us and he's coming to apply that victory over all the earth so what we are doing is looking back thanking him for his victory over us but looking ahead and thanking him ahead of time for the victory that is about to be unrolled on earth remembering where it begins at the cross of jesus christ where satan was defeated we do that but partaking of the elements of communion his broken body his shed blood a commemoration of the cross the place of victory our victory and ultimate victory so let's worship him let's remember him let's stand in christ [Music] [Music] [Music] we stood a precious tree the emblem of salvation [Music] the gift of calvary [Music] how is it i should probably while he was yet as his life was taken so i was granted [Music] there's nothing more i want than just to know his love my heart is set on christ i will count all else as lost the greatest of my crowns means nothing to me now for i counted up the cost and all my wealth [Music] [Music] i have no pride in gold
