hey Lloyd when I was a slowly 6 year with another video and today I'm gonna talk about the five things that China doesn't want you to see China is a nation with all its faults and problems undoubtedly gets things done that's the advantage of one-party state these huge mega projects may be rife with corruption and shoddy management but at the end of the day it's undeniable that China is the fastest growing country in the entire world so today I'm going to go through the top five things that trying to probably doesn't want you to see but also some counter points for each and every point the first thing is the environmental impact due to progress unfortunately most countries have to go through some sort of Industrial Revolution where things go from poor to rich and there's a lot of pollution and all kinds of issues that come out of that China is no exception to that now pollution is the obvious one here that's what you hear about on the news all the time but actually it's not just in the air you can go to these websites so you can go into China and actually see the quality of the air and its detriment son humanity but it's also in the water as well whereas most of the fresh water in China is actually not potable anymore so there will be a severe water crisis in China at some points now all of these environmental issues and toxins and the water and air actually lead to severe health problems with very very high rates of cancer as well as severe reproductive issues that a lot of my in-laws and a lot of women that I know in China actually suffer from and they actually end up requiring surgery so it's something that people don't really talk about often Chinese medicine has also plucked the earth of many of its most endangered species like rhinos and monkeys the now-extinct River Dolphin and countless rare plants and animals to satisfy a generation who still believes in the mysticism and old-school thought of take what I can get now that being said China is no stranger to green technology as well as big government projects that are doing things that can benefit all of us from enormous solar and wind projects to scientists selectively breeding infertile mosquitoes who can't reproduce so that when they try to mate they end up dying off this is all done in an effort to reduce mosquito population but also to reduce the spread of deadly disease like West Nile virus malaria and dengue fever the second is the quality of these ghost towns now you can actually go online or you can read news articles about ghost towns in China and how they're springing up everywhere and how nobody is moving into them but it's different when you actually show up and sit down into one of these restaurants so there's no one around you or actually walk through these villages where there's no people and the thing is it's not just in the first year and second to your cities it's everywhere perhaps one of the most damning things that I saw recently was when Winston and I rode to one of the many ghost towns that are springing up along the Chinese countryside just three years ago construction began on a luxury housing project that could house over a hundred thousand people this very same project took many buyers from all over China and upon completion has already been reduced to decomposing rubble to satisfy demand quickly these houses are built with filler like cardboard mixing with cement and it leads to them being able to look good enough from a distance that they can claim that the project is complete unfortunately these structures collapse fall apart and end up wasting not only materials but also human lives however this surplus of investment as well as the sheer amount of money that the Chinese government has to throw around means that the major cities of China have a sheen and sense of wealth that is just spectacular to look at the major cities of Beijing Shanghai Guangzhou and Shenzhen are simply unmatched in the amount of skyscrapers and development that they possess and that's the wonderful thing about China is that you can simultaneously feel like you're having the adventure of a lifetime in uncharted unexplored regions in the countryside and then go back to the cities and feel like you're in the richest country in the entire world it's a fascinating experience the third is the education based test based hivemind so just because you're an engineer or a doctor and china doesn't mean you actually know how to perform the skills required to do that job most people actually learn while they're on the job that's not to say that the West is particularly good at teaching real-world skills to students but China takes it to a whole different level the test based system means that the students in China all the way through high school basically only focus on a test called the GAO cow the cow cow determines where you go to university and also if you even get into university or this leads to high suicide levels amongst Chinese students and then when students actually get into university it's literally impossible to fail when I was a university professor in China I noticed that it was impossible to fail students even if they didn't attend the Dean would take me aside and say listen you can't fail the student because it makes the university look bad on statistics walking by a Chinese university classroom you'll often see students just sitting there on their phones this leads to students not possessing any sort of real knowledge that they would use in their future careers that being said there's lots of people in China that go out of their way to buck this system teaching the skills and all walks of life that might be neglected by normal Chinese society number four is the fact that China is actually home to 56 ethnic minorities and unfortunately the government doesn't really like to bring them to the forefront because of integration issues this can be seen when trying to travel around China and stay in hotels both when said and I have been refused entry into many hotels and minority regions because the government doesn't want outsiders to see what's going on there they're usually portrayed in Chinese media as happy-go-lucky Chinese people that just happen to have slightly different culture but in fact there are many many issues particularly in the western regions of China that being said minority culture is celebrated in China minority regions are very big tourist destinations for Chinese domestic tourists and the food and culture is celebrated in that aspect number 5 is actually the growing rate of addiction within China most people don't talk about drug addiction in the sphere of the Asian world but unfortunately that's gripping society quite badly now pair that with gaming and streaming and all of these other addictive traits in Chinese culture and you have quite a societal issue addiction and technology is one of the biggest problems that China has to face right now many Chinese parents have to come to terms of the fact that their child is so addicted to video games and computer games that their health and grades are suffering so there's a massive uptick in the amount of rehab centers that are springing up around China which use very controversial methods of getting kids to stop like isolation and electroshock therapy however it's easily understood why China has such an issue with technology addiction much of China's labor force is actually migrant labor so a lot of these people have to leave their hometowns behind leave the countryside family friends and go to the cities to find a new job this leaves many Chinese people with a crippling loneliness that often leads to them being addicted to streaming services paying people virtual gifts for their companionship however many people find a lot of comfort in this and it's become a massive industry a lot of these clips that you're seeing right now are actually from a new documentary that Winston just put out called stay awesome China it's a fascinating documentary where he traveled around to all the first tier cities in China Beijing Shanghai Shenzhen and Guangzhou and he met some of the most interesting people he's ever met in his entire life in China and learned about their stories so if you want to go check it out use the code laowai 86 and you can get 10% off and I think you guys are
