hi everybody it's darcy from the purplesville pantry welcome back to my channel today we're going to learn four ways to vacuum seal your canning jars for long-term storage okay we're talking about a brake bleeder versus a foodsaver vacuum sealer but we're also going to incorporate all four ways to vacuum seal your dry goods this works on dry goods it works on dehydrated goods it works on anything that you want to put back in your pantry any of these systems work i just want to walk through how each of them works so that you know which might be best for you so we have the handheld food saver the large machine food saver we have oxygen absorbers and we have a brake bleeder it comes in this little kit just like this i mean i'm sure there's tons of them um on the internet but this is the one that i got it's around i think it was 22 dollars on amazon um this is what it comes with but we won't be using much of this except for the two nozzle the nozzles plus the hose i used there's a long hose that's in here and i've got the nozzle that i'm going to be using already attached right back there so here's what we're doing let's walk through how each of these works and i'll give you a couple pros and cons okay let's get started what i have today is a pint and a half jar of um rigatoni i think that's the pasta name i always forget so we're going to go through all four methods of how to do this the first one is going to be an oxygen absorber i have a jar here that i have some oxygen absorbers in that are normally vacuum sealed inside here i've already broken the seal so i can do this quickly take your vacuum sealer place it in your jar you want to get these sealed back up immediately and i will vacuum seal these later but you don't want to let these sit on the air then i will put my lid on and it is good to go i'd want to go ahead and label and date this to know where to put this in my storage eventually what's going to happen is that this is going to absorb the oxygen that's in this jar and it's going to form a seal where the lid will not the lid will not come off unless you pry it off this is fast but it's not necessarily the easiest because you really have to deal with oxygen absorbers now for these three methods this these are essential you cannot do any of these three without these i know they're really hard to find right now keep looking amazon is doing pre-orders all the time for when their stock comes back in foodsaver gets them every two to three weeks you might be able to find them at local hardware stores that deal with preserving tools that are in the back of their stores or anywhere just keep checking they do come back in but they go quick so this is essential no matter which of these tools you use so because i'm using the wide mouth jar today i'm going to use the wide mouth attachment just remember no matter what of these preservation methods you use if you're finding that your regular um your regular jar attachment doesn't seal properly use a second lid invert that lid seal it take that lid off put it in your tool box and market that it's your lip topper and you are good to go okay so the next thing we're going to do is we're going to go ahead and use our little handheld foodsaver vacuum sealer i love this thing it's about 20 to 25 depending on where you can find it they are not out of stock most places this is easy to get the jar attachments are really hard to get i will leave a link down below for all this stuff if you'd like to go try to shop for it but also check your local places not everybody knows about these so you might find them locally where you can't find them online so what we would do is we would use our jar attachment just like this place it over our jar we're going to take the cap off of this because this little peg goes into this hole and this is how you do it because i've been using it so much i haven't recharged it so this isn't going to truly vacuum seal this jar yet but this is what you would use um for a handheld device now i wouldn't count on this being what you use if you're going to do a whole bunch of of vacuum sealing at one time because it doesn't have the power to do a ton but what it's perfect for is the everyday i'm getting in and out of my jars and i want to seal it back up this is easier to get out than pulling this thing out or even trying to pull out the brake bleeder this is fast it's easy and it's convenient for me because i can just reseal jars so quickly now as far as how long this takes with any of these methods it depends on the jar size that you have the density of the food that you have in it and what the food is like if i had like the noodles that had any kind of hole in the middle like an uh a penne or a macaroni noodle you're also having to pull out the air from within that shape too this is done because what i listen for is the change of pitch when it settles down it's finished so i'm gonna let it go pull that out and i have a sealed lid so much like the larger foodsaver depending on what your machine is like some of you may have a smaller machine that has a port hose that you have to actually connect the hose to the port then your hose into your jar this particular vacuum this particular food saver has it built in as quite a few of the larger newer ones do so what i'm going to do is i'm going to place my lid my jar attachment over my lid and the jar i'm going to turn it to accessory after i place my peg in the hole and here's something that you're going to look for in a minute this will stick and it will stay accessory [Music] it turns itself off disconnect remove the jar top and you are good to go label it date it put your ring back on just like this and put it on your shelf so now the moment you've been waiting for we're going to use the brake bleeder to do the same thing now the benefit of having a brake leader is if you either live off the grid where you're relying on solar and you don't want to be you don't want to charge up any of your extra equipment on your limited solar the brake bleeder is perfect it's about the same price as this handheld they run about 20 to 25 dollars depending on where you find them the price is the same because you still have to invest in a jar attachment lid now you can get this separately from the regular wide i mean the regular jar attachment you can buy them separately or you can buy them in a kit now we're going to start with our break bleeder as with all of the other mechanical versions we'll start with our jar full of product our lid on the jar the jar attachment on and then you're going to take this nozzle and you're going to insert it into the hole in the top the thing to be careful of is that you need to have it perpendicular if you have it even tilted a little bit what it's not able to do is form the vacuum so you might hear air hissing out of it or you can sit here and pump and it's not doing anything you need that perpendicular connection and you have to hold it it does not stay in if you let it go like your um the jar attachment hose connector i don't know what you would call that but that it won't stay in so here we go i'm putting it in and we're going to pump the idea is to get this between 15 to 20 psi but that doesn't always happen because some jars just don't need it it can depend on how much product you have in there how dense it is how much air is actually there but your goal is to get around 15 to 20 percent so here we go just you can see what i'm doing with my hand and as the pressure in this builds this gets harder to do um and it's so if you don't have great hand strength or arm strength you can get pretty sore pretty quick with it so you can see that i'm having trouble at this point and we're not even quite up to ten but if i keep going we're getting there now i'm having trouble hit now listen to this that's how you know you form the vacuum so i'm going to take the attachment lid off and i can tell you i cannot get this off with my fingers at all it would take um it would take my a spoon or a jar opener to do it but this right now is a vacuum sealed jar of noodles so i want to show you what it's like when i do a small german vacuum the old label when i vacuum sealed this jar of o2 absorbers that i just used i'm going to do the same thing regular mouth lid regular mouth jar attachment right on there get the nozzle in and we're probably going to get it way closer to 15 between 15 and 20 percent now we're hitting 15 between 15 and 20 is where you want and i can no longer pump this so i'm like at about what 16 but here's the thing i want you to hear are you ready if i have it tilted sideways it's not moving i'm not forming a vacuum it's doing nothing okay because this is tipped over and this can't seal so be careful of that now this is not for doing things like canning it's only for dry goods you can still use it on powder goods just like you would any of the vacuum sealers by making sure that you placed a barrier between the jar and the lid like a muffin cup or a coffee filter or something to keep any of the powder from coming up through the lid because not only will it come up through the lid it will create a barrier here so that this will not seal so i hope that gave you an idea about how this works i'm going to tell you my honest opinion okay if i'm off grid and i have to charge this is probably not the best thing i still prefer this even as much as we lose power in the summers i still prefer this this hole to charge for days this is the same price this takes a little finessing while it works if you don't have that perpendicular nozzle into your jar attachment you're working for nothing because you're not getting the full vacuum it is a little better because you can see more about what you're shooting for and you can feel it so it might give somebody a better sense of i've really officially fully vacuum sealed this jar whereas when you're relying on the sound of this one versus the automatic shut off of this one you might you just might want the extra security but i'm telling you if you have um if you're not strong if you don't have really good grip if you can't squeeze this it's a problem so know those things but otherwise this works just as well if not better to create a vacuum seal than the small handheld or the food or the machine however i'm going to tell you the investment is worth it no matter which way you go to make sure that you vac conceal your food properly for your your food storage so that you can save it for long term so i hope that helped if you have questions ask them below and i'm sure those of you who have been using these for years might have some suggestions i've been using it for a little while it's not my favorite because i'm just a little more at ease with my machines versus this but i'm glad that i have this i'm glad that i'm using it and i will have it in case there is a power outage down the road i've got a tool i can use to reseal my jars
