if you are at all like us odds are you grew up falling on one of two sides of an epic playground few Nintendo or Sega Super Mario Bros or Sonic the Hedgehog if that battle had all started to involve the discussion of films for the longest while Mario won by default because while the Super Mario movie wasn't exactly what one would call good by any stretch of the imagination the mushroom munching plumbers at least had a big-budget Hollywood film under their tool belts all now Sonic has finally stepped up to the plate with these simply titled Sonic the Hedgehog which just hit theaters and it's actually not too shabby it's got a lot of heart some absolutely bonkers acting from Jim Carrey significantly better CGI than what we saw in that one trailer and a lot of little Easter eggs and details for fans of the blue blur to sink their teeth into and there is a ton of stuff in the movie so much in fact that most people couldn't possibly catch them all luckily we were able to spot quite a few that you may have missed so we are of course going to break down a handful of these Easter eggs in this video also this video is going to be just absolutely chock-full of spoilers so I would suggest that you go check it out before watching this video with all that being said let's get right into it Sega has perhaps one of the most iconic video game libraries out there only really arguably being topped by their red compatriots an opening logo for Sega honored quite a few of those going into the film I personally expected the old-school Sega logo like we saw during the beginning of the old Sonic games but that's not what we got instead we got the Sega logo over top of some footage of some classic Sega games a couple of the ones that we spotted include altered beast space channel 5 and as you would obviously expect the Classic Sonic the Hedgehog what games did you spot in the intro let us know down in comments below at the very beginning of the film we get to see the little baby version of Sonic interacting with his giant al guardian when he rushes in to say hello he presents her with a rather spiky looking flower now this might look a bit familiar and that makes sense since the design of this flower is bay stop the sprites that were used for the original game back when graphical limitations left things looking quite a bit more pointy than they probably should have been in fact the entirety of what we see on Sonic's home world looks exactly like the first few levels of the original game the loop-de-loops are there the vivid green grass as well as the checkerboard colored blocks that make up the rocky surfaces it sort of makes us wonder is this entire world made up of 16-bit style graphics just higher resolution would be interesting to see more of this world in a possible future sequel speaking of that 16-bit world of Sonics we actually get to see the events that led to the blue blur having to leave that world and eventually come to ours it seems that some little creatures found out about Sonic's abilities and attempted to either capture him or take him out kind of hard to tell exactly what they wanted but it didn't look good either way speaking of appearances though we don't exactly get a great look at these little guys but they seem to bear a striking resemblance to some of the more recognizable critters from the games specifically echidna you may know the echidna as the red creatures that Knuckles is actually one of sure it could be other types of anthropomorphic animals but for our money we're gonna go with the kidness maybe this will lead into some sort of setup for a sequel where the echidnas are wiped out and the last one blames sonic for some reason what does have to wait and see when sonic does eventually make his way to earth he settles down in a small town in rural Montana a small town very appropriately called Green Hills though honestly there don't appear to be too many noteworthy grass covered Hills trees yes but that's not usually what one thinks of when they think of green hills so what gives with the name well the name here is a direct reference to the first pair of levels from the first Sonic the Hedgehog game and it is also one of the most recognizable locations from the entire sonic franchise appearing in some form or another and pretty much all of them so of course Green Hill Zone had to be referenced in the film in some way kind of makes its wonder if the place that Sonic came from was also called green hills would fit with the lore of the games as well Sonic is fast like wicked fast like put Quicksilver from the x-men franchise to shame fast as we can see in a few moments throughout the film where does a very similar thing to what we saw in those x-men movies where time seems to slow down almost to the point of being frozen in place for everyone but the little blue hedgehog since he is apparently moving just so fast we even get to see exactly how fast he is going early on in the film when he runs right by Tom's radar gun and apparently he's going 300 miles per hour don't get us wrong that is super fast but it is hardly so fast that he would qualify as the quickest thing on earth heck there is actually a car that hits and exceeds that speed one of Bugattis hyper cars that's been clocked at around 304 miles per hour yet sonic seemed to celebrate hitting this speed kind of odd but ok I guess sonic has always had a certain connection with the smaller creatures of the forest in the old games he set out to save all the little dots including flicky the star of an older Sega arcade game from the evil clutches of dr. Robotnik in fact every time he crushes one of the docs robot minions out flies a little creature so needless to say he is a good friend to all animals and in the film we see this when he not only saves a little turtle from getting crushed by some oncoming traffic but he then takes it for a spin running faster than the turtle probably ever even imagined possible it did leave the little shell bro quite shaken but had to be a lot of fun regardless in Sonic's cave home deep in the woods the blue blur makes himself as comfortable as he can kicking back in a tattered looking bean bag what does he choose to do with his free time to help him relax why he chose to read about a certain other speedy hero only this speedster is less blue and more scarlet that's right it seems that Sonic is quite fond of the flash since his entire comic collection looks like it is entirely made up of old flash comics specifically those featuring the most iconic iteration of the character Barry Allen wonder if he chose to read seemingly exclusively flash comics because he relates to them or if he's hoping to learn something from them either way it's pretty obvious that he has been definitely inspired by this Justice League member using his speed for good of course it would also appear that the flash is not the only famous individual that is known for his speed that sonic looks up to hanging in his cave in the Far background you can just barely make out an old poster featuring the great Olympic champion and fastest man alive Usain Bolt it makes sense that Sonic would look up to the guy in the film we see that Sonic desperately wants to be accepted by people someday in seeing the adoration that bolt gets from people due to his speed Sonic might just feel that that could be a possible way for him to also garner respect from people however bolt is just a tad bit slower than the blue blur clocking in and around 27 miles per hour at his quickest that's pretty fast for humans to be sure not so much for electrically supercharged alien hedgehogs while hanging out in his cave sonic also talks about the possibility of having to use the Rings to leave earth behind moving on to yet another planet on his list as he does he pulls out said list which has symbols denoting each of the possible places he could go eagle-eyed viewers may have spotted that one of these symbols was just a little bit familiar looking yep that is indeed the logo for the Sega Saturn the follow-up console to this super popular Sega Genesis the Saturn existed in a sort of weird state for most of its time on the market it came out at a time when 3d graphics were just starting to appear on home consoles but it wasn't exactly powerful enough to compete with the likes of the Sony Playstation couple that with an extremely botched launch due to Sega moving up the release a few months without telling pretty much any of its developers working on software for it and it pretty quickly faded from the public eye being replaced by the Sega Dreamcast in 1999 now here's a fun fact the Sega Saturn didn't actually have a true Sonic game sure it had spin-offs like Sonic R and Sonic Jam but the main Series titles skipped it entirely with Sonic Adventure instead making its way to the Dreamcast Greenhills Montana seems like pretty much any stereotypical rural town in America you got your bumbling deputy a young man who dreams of leaving the small town behind to make it in a big city and of course that one crazy guy who sputters nonsense about some sort of mythical creature living in the forest this particular crazy guy rants and raves about Sonic or as he calls him the blue devil his drawing skills leave something to be desired though as he shows the drawing a sonic it looks like something he drew in Microsoft Paint this is because his drawing is actually the famous meme aptly named sanic which did originate from a joke video about how to draw Sonic in mspaint kind of figured that one of the many many sonic related memes would eventually make its way into the film during the scene where some Pentagon officials are talking about bringing in Robotnik to investigate the recent blackout in green hills take a look at one of the generals on the right side of the room you might now recognize him but there is a rather well-known voice actor amongst them yeah that is Jerry chalk the voice of grounder the robot henchman of Robotnik in adventures assigned to Hedgehog and he was also Robotnik himself in Sonic Underground wonder if it was at all weird for him to talk about Robotnik as if he were a completely different person one of the remaining places that Sonic could go using the Rings in fact the only place apparently is a world completely inhabited by giant mushrooms and pretty much nothing else this place may seem familiar to people who played Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles since it bears a striking resemblance to mushroom hill zone the 7th zone in Sonic 3 and the first in Sonic and Knuckles slightly less green but otherwise it's pretty spot-on maybe while Robotnik is trapped there they'll meet a certain a kid now with attitude could be a good setup for a potential sequel to this film if you are a fan of the old Sonic cartoons you no doubt caught this one though the rest of you may not have during the super fast segment in the country bar sonic takes a little bit of time to eat an entire platter of chili dogs commenting that they are particularly tasty it would seem that we have just witnessed the first time that this version of Sonic has tried chili dogs a type of food that in the comics in cartoons is represented as Sonic's absolute favorite food even if it does cause a rather stinky aftermath when Tom finally makes it to San Francisco he rushes and injured Sonic into his sister-in-laws home where his wife is staying when he makes it inside his sister-in-law is rather hostile which actually kind of makes sense here since he has been labeled a terrorist by this point she quickly asked Tom what is under the blanket quickly rattling off a couple of possibilities including plutonium and emails this could be a reference to the whole Hillary Clinton email scandal which is a bit of an odd reference for a kids movie but okay I guess it was funny enough for the adults in the audience while working on figuring out how to utilize the quill that he found at Tom's house robotnik opened up a drawer showing some names for previous projects that he was working on and one of them that you can just catch out of the corner of your eye was a label with a rather recognizable name bad knits badniks was the name given to the robot minions that Robotnik utilized in the games and other mixed media properties the robots that we talked about earlier in this video the ones hiding the little animals in them in the film Robotnik simply refers to the robots as his drones so maybe in the future they'll choose to go with the more dramatic sounding name while engaging with Robotnik in the streets of San Francisco there is a single moment where we get a freeze-frame as sonic narrates his current situation be a voiceover it's a rather funny moment but if you can get past the humor and look into the far background you may notice a rather interesting street side way back there there is a sign for a Mega Drive those of you in North America may not think anything of this but this is actually the name of the Sega Genesis in other regions there has never really been an official reason given for why that Mega Drive was changed to Genesis here but it was largely assumed to be something involving trademark issues regardless it was nice to see a reference to the original name in the film the film is full to the brim with product placement from Lumber Liquidators to Toyota there are a lot of brands being thrown around in it but there is one that pretty much gets its own mini commercial the brand in question is of course Olive Garden it even gets its own slogan shout out when you're here you're family seemed a bit forced and then at the end of the film it all comes back around when they're given an Olive Garden gift card for their trouble just a bit on the nose don't you think sometimes it's easy to forget that Sonic is just a kid while the more modern Sonic games have presented him as more of a teenager this particular sonic is but a wee youngster and like most kids he seems to be a fan of cards at least that's what it would seem based off of his fancy car bed you're probably thinking but wait why would sonic care about cars well this isn't the first time this question has been posed back when sonic appeared in the game Sonic and Sega all-stars racing the same question was asked and yet there he was driving around in a car sadly the car bed was not the same color being red instead of blue really seemed like a missed opportunity there but it was a nice enough little nod to the racing game series the end credits were incredibly fun to look at for fans of the older-style Sonic games as they represented many of the key locations from the film as if they were in the games one such location is the country bar that we mentioned earlier on while we were talking about chili dogs the specific sprite work for this location is very similar to one from Sonic mania a game released in 2017 that took the series back to the retro style the sprites here line up with the Mirage saloon zone a zone that was actually a remake of an old level concept from Sonic CD so the whole thing altogether is really just a nice little bit of sonic history since this isn't a Marvel flick many people in the audience might not have stayed for the mid-credits scene that being said there is in fact a short little bit there that gives us the official film debut of miles tails Prower the little fox pops through a portal from another world before pulling out a fancy-looking bit of tech and then flying off in search of presumably sonic didn't really expect the character to pop up but it was nice to see him and a good bit of setup for a possible sequel and hey maybe if you miss this you'll start sticking around for the credits of more non Marvel movies what did you think of Sonic the Hedgehog did you know about these Easter eggs did you catch any little details that we didn't mention in this video let us know in
