Please note that this website is currently a work in progress! Lots of interesting data and statistics to come.
In a not too alternate universe, this would read "10 years ago today, JR Hildebrand won the Indy 500!"
Whoever it was screaming βYeeeaaahh Dan!β that still gives me chills to this day
Stupid Kimball
This is why I always root for JR to finally win it. Canβt fathom how it still feels 10 years later
I remember that finish like it was yesterday. I honestly couldnβt believe that it happened
Sitting in turn 4 that day was nuts. Amidst all the pit stops and so on it was exceedingly unclear to fans who was in what position other than Hildebrand, and how far back they really were. The TV boards weren't toggling through the field timing frequently enough to match up with the differing pace of drivers who were slowing for fuel save and full throttle.
It didn't seem to matter at all though, none of us were thinking "who is in second and how far back are they" we were all literally clapping to salute the new champion ... and then he disappeared behind the wall. Because of our angle and the way the wreck happened we could see only part of the car as it made contact and then came out onto the front stretch against the wall. Our claps turned to gasps and pointing (as if everyone wasn't already looking) You could hear Hildebrand step on the gas to the absolute maximum as his engine screamed.
My brother yelled "who's in second?!"
My dad yelled "He's gonna win it with two wheels!" (It was actually 3 but it looked like 2 to us)
We saw Dan Wheldon pass him just before the yellow.
None of us had any idea what to say other than "Dan Wheldon won it?!"
After the shock died down we were happy for Dan knowing it had been rough for him not even having a full time ride, but overwhelmingly we felt for JR. I don't know how it felt for those watching at home, but it really felt in person like you could hear him wanting it through his car. I still remember hearing him on the gas after hitting the wall. Willing his destroyed car to cross the line. It did, but not fast enough.
And then Dale Earnhardt Jr., also repping the National Guard, does the exact same thing during the Coke 600 later that day.
:(
That intro gives me chills evrytime
