the following is a special presentation of ESPN on ABC you are looking live at a stretch of the heartland that has made its way into American folklore and into the dreams of racecar drivers all over the world for the fans the Indianapolis 500 is as much a celebration as a sporting event an experience which has captured imaginations for over 100 years away from the chaos at this woman alone with his thoughts study and concentration is Dario Franchitti of the powerful Ganassi team he has twice his did Victor here but in the pole position this year once again it is a Penske team driver earning in the spotter records 17th time for the owner his name is Ryan Briscoe 33 drivers and all dream of capturing the borg-warner trophy but that comes only to those who can't control the emotions this event demands and focused squarely on the task at hand there is a road before me it is a road of everlasting glory you can feel her presence pressure her desire for ruthless effort but today I am a master of my fate today trust must rise against doubt today I can't be late [Applause] erase the crowd race like no one's watching was a challenge in my sideview get away so they can't draft me one second can make the difference clear the mind feel the silence you can't think about fear respect it but never surrender because today is about greatness [Music] last life I'm forgiving focusing and in the Dell is disrespect and you will pay you shall have a verdict can be cruel can be divine [Music] there is a road before now it is a road of resolve [Music] and it lasts 500 miles [Music] that's what it takes to ride with legends the test is heavy but the reward is forever history here has taught us that the gifts of concentration and focus really do translate to victory as with the elite drivers on Chip Ganassi steam idiot three of the last five five Jr Hildebrandt currently stands as a symbol of another rule of this road a single lapse in concentration can be devastated the jr5 redemption for the victory coming to you this year from right above the start/finish line on a very hot humid day when weather may well become a major factor in this race hello welcome again everybody I'm Brent Musburger delighted to be looking straight down on the wall yard of bricks you know for a race that's overflowing with compelling storylines this year in addition to the intense heat here in Indiana we've touched upon a couple of them already for a record 17th time a Penske team driver has earned the full position for this race the first Australian to ever the Andy Paul good on you ride and no American has taken the checkered flag at Indy since Sam Hornish did it back in 2006 ten one of the nine American in the field today breakthrough for more on this let's go to dr. Jerry punch Jerry well thanks Brent books the name Andretti is an American Motorsports icon 43 years ago Mario won the Indianapolis 500 but since in one of open relations most famous families has seen its share of disappointment here Michael came all so close to winning it so many times and Marco lost it within feet of the checkered flag here as a rookie but today when you stroll through Gasoline Alley you can almost hear the whispers could this be the day the Adreno to Victory Lane it's the little team that could Sarah Fisher Hartman racing is back at Indy for the fifth year and though they may not have the budgets of the Ganassi s and the pen skis they have a legitimate shot at winning this race behind the wheel they have the young phenom American Josef Newgarden he tossed the charts and practice and he was the only Honda to qualify in the the 67 could be the dark horse print Thank You Jaime of course much more than a headline hovers over the Speedway this week it is the morning for last year's Indy 500 champion Dan Wheldon lost his life at a crash last October to keeping with Indy 500 tradition since early this morning the entering fans were greeted by a banner bearing the current champion smiling face and name we will honor and remember Dan Wheldon to the words of his friends colleagues and family when we returned to Indianapolis right after this there is always pain and loss but it tears at the heart even more when that loss comes too early when the promise of what was still to come was just as strong as what had already happened but there will always be comfort in the moons in the snapshots of joy they gave us before they left what might have been still hurts but what they were will never die dan Wilkins lost fits squarely and tragically into that category of lives gone too soon so much more to offer he was only 33 and Thursday and a touching ceremony Dan's widow Susie received the champion's ring on his behalf he was one of racing's brightest lights and most charismatic personalities and when they died we lost the spirit of Englishman who was a champion driver friend and most of all family man to be honest why drivers don't like talking about the danger of this sport is he tempts fate do I believe that'll ever happen to me no but at the end of the day you know for your time's up your time's up the Lionheart you know I mean that's his nickname he was racing go-carts back in the 90s and the mechanics used to say that he raced with a lot of heart much like Richard the Lionheart fought battle from then on he had a mural of the Lionheart painted on his helmet [Music] growing up in England where motorsport is incredibly prominent that dream of winning the biggest motor race in the world is with you from a very young age this is been a dream come true for me I want to hear the fan some more I can't hear you got a scrape my fans for it later he was a huge personality and people loved them because of who he was guy we know around the pit area as mr. fashion there's that sexy son of a shoe collection it's got to be between three and four hundred pairs I have to say you will never see him not dressing well you would ever see him with a dirty shoe and he was so ain't know about it the first time Tony and I got invited to houses they teach shoes off of the door to do this to that people refuse to take their shoes off in my house in Florida I have these so they can take their shoes off but wear something and you know everything had to be evenly spaced out and closet and the same hangers for everything and color-coded and all that I have the hangers we're going the same way the pants are all kind of hanging without creases but you know I was one of his personality trained so I love that about him as well interview Susie ask me anything speak to the camera while Stambaugh glad to work it in late 2007 we were just you know spending a lot of time together even outside of work [Music] I don't know it just decided that we want to speak together we're you know fall in love with each other once he had his own family I think he understood a couple other things and he started to see things different and Susie made him a much better person Susie got the best out of him Susie made it mature late in the family man he was 2011 I believe dan had some you know some opportunities to raise the whole season but they wouldn't have been teams and/or situations who were capable of winning so he really wanted to wait for the right opportunity with him having that time off he was able to spend time with his family and watched Oliver grow and Sebastian grow and you know I think he enjoyed that I'm very excited to announce that I'm gonna be driving in Indianapolis 500 I'm desperate to win it again because I was so young when I want it now I'm a bit more mature and stuff like that I want to feel it again [Music] [Applause] that's like the Cinderella story you know movie and he does that to special people oh how sweet [Applause] I just remember there being this really great feeling of contentment just being happy with where we were and excited for the future it's been just up until this point a phenomenal year I've really enjoyed it for many different reasons it's kind of opened me up to a lot of different things at 7:00 in the morning before the race they lift the text message saying call me call me call me so I call them and I'm like you know hey what's you know you you're in trouble I got Teddy last night I'm like oh god what did he did I think we both just needed we wanted to do something that was meaningful with our initials and it was just you know a special [Music] I don't even want to talk about Vegas to be honest I just that something I've put I put it at my head now it was a horrible situation shouldn't have been there and I don't really want to relive it I remember you know the next day watching the Sun come up and just me feeling just really scared and just like things were moving too fast and just you know didn't want it to be another day I just I miss his voice I just miss not having a brother I know that you know he was a great driver and accomplished you know a lot in his short time but he just was an amazing person and just someone that made everything better in every way and you know you missed that so much in the spirit of keeping Dan's memory alive the speedway will wheel out his winning car in a special tribute later on while it's IndyCar colleagues have acknowledged Dan Wheldon on every team's final inspection sticker at the Speedway today and welder will be missed but fondly remembered forever and of course it was a completely bizarre twist of fate that led to Dan Wheldon's win at indy last year American junior Hildebrand competing in his first Indy 500 was seemingly on his way to an easy victory when the unthinkable happened and junior still thinks about it all the time [Music] Steinway junior insulating rookie come on that point in time was when I realized that the a3 car was going as slow as it was the middle of the corner going through four I had a split-second subconscious decision to make yeah are you gonna go for it are you gonna jam all the bricks and try to slow down and make sure the corner that way my instinctual reaction was just to go for it you know this is a race that you got to try to win it was simple as Nolan banger going home not closing the deal on something like that when you're in a position to do so it was the ultimate frustration I knew there was gonna be a microphone in my face within a couple of minutes and I had to pretty quickly come to grips with the fact that this is what happened and you got to be a man about it and face music I don't want to have to stop going through turn four so I went to the high side soon as I got up there scuffles it's not something from the beginning that I ever hid from you know and I think that that's made me a stronger driver a stronger athlete a stronger person I look forward to turn four online 200 this year oh I'm ready to face it you know whatever win comes at me and I'd be happy to take the risk and there is jr. 24 year old from Sausalito California now to redeem himself for the wind today he'll need to make his way to the front from the 18th position well we're just getting started the hands continue to gather within this iconic Cathedral the car racing on this Memorial Day weekend this occasion is certainly about speed power and the will to win but it's also about family ties that bind the generation and speaking of ties that bind still ahead the story of two boys from Brazil who grew up with a shared affection for car racing and each other plus now they are Castroneves is anxious to dance with history and two-time champion Dario Franchitti is pursuing some more in the magic of his as we continue from Indianapolis after this [Music] they started out as trinkets a statue a sculpture a cup but the years the sweat and the desire have transformed them into something more the trophies upon which entire lives are centered the desire of would-be legends not satisfied just to touch the prize but to become a part of it it isn't only the trophy that holds so much meaning in this event historic significance is everywhere the very shape of the track the fans must cross to reach their seats in the stands nearly every stretch of this road has play historic moment and who knows the fans may be lucky enough to see history made again today should LEL Castroneves take the checkered flag now he's a man of many talents but only one goal to win up for Indianapolis 500 [Music] one [Music] well I was good I was oh one two three I'm down one two three I want to do one two three four and fast he becomes a three-time winner the biggest when you come over to this place and you stamp your foot in into the race track you like this is awesome because they did three times and so close to something that only three drivers are able to do it it gives you something extra and you want to go out there and make it happen and I feel that from the fans from the people that really want to see history you know to happen it's only legends aj4 rip years and all of the senior will definitely get honor to join that Club one two three four one two three four one two three one two three four right job well done but I don't want to be score I want to do school [Music] and there is the Renaissance racer himself the 37 year old from Brazil starts from the second world for Team Penske he'll be driving a Chevy but the first time in seven years Chevy engines are competing here again in fact the front two roads today will be under Chevy power but as the recent absence of American winners demonstrates the 500 is truly an international event indeed of the 67 winners all times 25 were not from the United States and there's a pair of drivers who have long dreamed of joining that list a couple of boys from Brazil for whom racing was the common passion that led to a bond of brotherhood [Music] [Applause] we're at Interlagos has a place that we both grew up together it's where we're all started it was two young kids really determining to make it and racing I was seven years old and my dad took me to a go-kart track and I see this little blond kid little chubby that's a dad you know a kid is fast look at that go for it school and my dad wanted to talk to his dad and then we got introduced and we clicked right away I met this guy who had this little potato nose very charming he was it was so pretty so you tell me now that I was a lot cuter than you when I was younger now it's the other way around here for Tony Kanaan and Rubens Barrichello success came early by 1987 as teens each had won multiple go-kart championships that same year Tony's father was diagnosed with cancer he called me at a hospital I sat down beside his bed and he he started to talk to me about life so look if something ever happens to me I want you to take care of your mom and sister and I don't want you to give up racing you gotta promise me that [Music] he passed that night [Music] I woke up in the morning I'm in there I qualify first on Saturday I wonder H on Sunday and the trophy that I won that race is still sits at his nightstand at home the cost of racing would make it difficult for Tony to uphold the promise he made to his father that's when Rubens dad stepped in he's dead obviously being friends with my dad I felt really bad and Neil that I had a lot of talent and pretty much took Jeremy says hey the way you can count on me is I'm always here but he gotta go earn it and that's what I did that obviously grown us together he was with me most of the time after school we will get together and go drive go-karts and like young kids just having the time of their lives but Tony was in a way the brother that I have always wanted when we raised that go-kart I had a problem with a carburetor and I said can you help me for a lot just push me I have a laugh I'd thirteen to part because it pushed me into the corner and I went flying it was one of the biggest crashes I had in my life the go-kart bag Ruben's went on to race 19 seasons in Formula One meanwhile can on race 16 seasons in IndyCar when Rubens lost his Formula One ride this past winter it was an opportunity for Tony to repay a favor to his friend it didn't take much for him to say do you want to drive my car we never thought that who would be racing on the same series and being teammates two ugly kids no money from Interlagos life made us friends and very fortunate to have two moms and to that he's my brother and there is the very popular Tony kit at the 500 he's led this race seven different eyes but never one so the Blood Brothers from Brazil with all the other competitors for another in these stirring time-honored traditions the driver introduction that's coming up next when we return to Indianapolis on a hot Sunday afternoon what a record roger penske as a master at the indianapolis 500 he has won in a record 15 times but he's got a new man on the pole ryan briscoe for more on that let's go to Vince Welch with been a interesting week for you but as you know confidence can be both powerful and fragile how has the success of the week earning pole position shaped your frame of mind for today it's been good I mean it's given us confidence for sure having a fast car off qualifying we ran well on carb day in final practice we made some adjustments with this heat so I don't know I'm feeling good it helps the fact I've been off the front row a couple of times I think to detain those nerves of having the pole for the first time here but it's still a big deal and sort of got those butterflies going right now but I'm ready to go racing quickly Roger Penske the team owner is on the radio with you handling your strategy he's won here 15 times more privilege or pressure I don't know it's just it's all I've ever known here so he's always been my guy on the radio and we're a good team and I know I know ROG is hungry for the win and I want to do that for him ryan briscoe now let's meet the rest of the drivers here's public address announcer Dave Calabro [Applause] gentlemen welcome to the any lap list 500 at this time we would like to introduce the celebrity pace car driver for today please a warm welcome to guys Yeti from the Food Network and celebrity chef who's with the sky Yeti the celebrity pace program [Applause] ladies and gentlemen now it's time to introduce the 33 drivers for the 96 running of the Indianapolis 500-mile race [Applause] after 13 years at 41 making his first ever appearance in an IndyCar race from France shall I see in vanilla rolling of it the Swiss is Simona de Silvestro 30 earth in the air hello Brian pasa outside it 300 drivers in the field promises things won't happen play all those amazing it's like halfway in the 28th position is first years and our owner grinder Indianapolis instead I preserve [Applause] [Music] Romine and the only spender in the field eeeh [Music] the point seven year so that's it four days [Music] in robbery [Music] these prints [Music] [Music] another Englishman wolf [Music] but sunny Southern California and is one of the race this year [Applause] he helped Japan driving for Bobby Rahal and Indiana's own David Letterman please welcome nebulous [Applause] oh six black bears Rookie of the Year second-place finishers are Hildebrandt [Applause] the Englishman a snake [Music] understand [Applause] in row five through company indianapolis 500 m [Applause] Autopia trip [Applause] outside a row a lot of fears Gregory Hall a hand side of her for after a nineteen-year from the laws barrier ladies [Applause] [Music] the nurse here at the Thailand EJ I'm crazy ah [Music] [Applause] on fire Tennessee's Oh [Applause] [Music] [Applause] thirty six twenty thirty trucker time-worn Indianapolis 500 [Applause] well power [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Oh - starring American Fort Lauderdale Florida Ryan hunter-reay Steve April and running out of this work there is hitting gh1 [Applause] first time this year on record 17 Ryan Briscoe 3:96 money [Music] [Applause] first competed in certainly they but given up this racist legacy they are also driven to become an ever life part of its long and storied history it's a tradition it's a history that's the stories that come out of this place that make it what it is oftentimes those stories are failure but I didn't give you a severy one we did win One race what would it be and they'd all say the same five we have a life before wedding indeed one after winning Indian the two are very very different they don't write about second or third in the history books too much when you win a race you like men just part of this I'm part of the history here they will never introduce you the same they always gonna introduce to the if I want to change he's going to win it Frankie Diaz wanted from drinking the milk in your dear your likeness on the trophy all that stuff kissing the bricks to me the biggest thing that was falling in the footsteps of my heroes Scott Dixon is like a plane it's a race that only what 67 I think people have ever wanted I'm sure all the drivers had won multiple championships would have handed you know a few of those back for for an Indianapolis 500 won losing at India's different than any other race 11 laps to go in the Indy 500 and Michael is slowing I can't believe it the engine quit to have the engine brake with ten laps to go is just it was heartbreaking it's a whole good day people talk about the margin of victory but when you're second is how much you lost the race by [Applause] Spanish forty-three when thousands of a second and still the closest finish today over the course of ten years being disappointed at very very badly you see that trophy with everybody's win there's face on it and you wonder if your face is gonna be there for a 19 yard rookie you know finishing second yeah it's great but you're either an 8500 winner or you're not dan wheldon is going to win the race JR Hildebrand is taking a win in Indy means so much more because it it well and truly is racing in workout [Music] you know AJ Foyt from one race at 7,500 [Music] once you win this race your life has changed forever you win the Indy 500 you're going to be remembered forever Indianapolis stays with you forever [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] a few of those men whose achievements will be forever remembered here Castroneves Dixon Frank Keeney their faces are all sculpted into the BorgWarner trophy their names synonymous with greatness at this the greatest spectacle in racing we love to be back to the Indianapolis pre-race show presented by Go Daddy - aw on hand here today for the 500 and of course one of the more recent traditions has been the dominance of Dario Frank his 20% folks 25% and he spent a whole lot of time at the front of the field through the last few years right now he's said environment their own Richter Brule breakfast yeah but that's about the past today is the present and the question is that new Honda engine you got for carb they put you to the top of the list is that gonna give you both the mileage and the horsepower to get you to the end of this race to put your contention for third win I hope so I hope so the people at Hawn dive works incredibly hard all year and especially the week between qualifying in today's race so hope for that new Honda engines gonna propel this number 50 car right to the front the target boys have worked hard too so let's see what we go out today he was pretty frustrated earlier in the month he's all smiles today well of course victory at the Indy 500 is the ultimate goal but you know some drivers inspire others merely by participating in this race one such driver is Charlie Kimmel competing for the second year in a row with type 1 diabetes my name is Marie Claire Calvin I'm 12 I've had it for four years now and I root for Charlie Kendall we found out about Charlie Kimball dear dad he was watching the Indianapolis 500 Charlie Kimball that's racing diabetes who took 13th last year and as a rookie that's an incredible feat let alone doing it as a type 1 diabetic and instantly I was I was very interested motional and started crying he's like that is a big deal after the Indianapolis race we had already planned a trip to go to the Iowa race none of us will forget that day Charlie Metis at the gate and took us to the pits I was on cloud nine I was just like so happy eight without you I was walking on air as a parent it makes me feel humbled that Charlie's spend the time fire me they'd follow my dreams I'm involved in okay this is gonna take a while the softball volleyball basketball dance try the cross this year there's these times from like oh I'm the failures and my blood Sugar's low I can't play I'm like well if Charlie Campbell can raise a few guards I could do it so yeah to see Mary Claire thrive with diabetes as is wonderful [Music] to see her happy is the best thing [Music] we're out but incident she got a special behind-the-scenes treat from Charlie Kimball what a thrill for that young girl now you may have noticed that we haven't named Danica Patrick that's because she is not in this year's way her place in the GoDaddy team has been taken over by Canadian James hitch flip and he's loving every minute of it folks IndyCar driver in future legend James Hinchcliffe can I bend your ear for a second yeah sure what about okay here's the game plan alright it's about getting your face out there take it over the internet and making you the biggest the greatest ever since we got the go down your ride we've been getting a lot of extra attention but at me that makes sense because Danica was the biggest thing to hit any Carson's asphalt so rather than running from this attention we figured let's embrace it yes and when he says embrace it I think it really means replace it you know put his own stamp on it get his face out there now hichy mind if I call you did she yeah kinda what did I call you the Hinch master general the hinge Meister over here was the 2011 IndyCar Rookie of the Year the hinge dog is the only driver to make the Firestone fast six every race this season and the hinge who stole Christmas is currently in first place hey currently we are in third the entire GoDaddy team have been busting their humps all season long to get this great star and we're all looking forward to a good Indy 500 let me ask you how long have you been racing since I was nine years old no and how long have you been Canadian pretty much my entire 25 years on the plane whoo the dedication and you're gonna need that dedication to get on the GoDaddy homepage you're gonna have to work hard you're gonna have to focus you're gonna have to give me $50 cash and you're going to have to Train [Music] [Music] [Music] the whole hinge for home page campaign started as a grassroots movement I mean all we're trying to do is ramp up some friendly competition so Danica if you're watching it's all in good fun oh no no no it's not this is about crushing the competition all right no chitchat we've got a grand finale to shoot here's a wardrobe why at least I'll wear a helmet with this you don't why can think of one way to get on the homepage win the Indy 500 but in all seriousness James you were beat by nine inches for the poll that's less than the time it takes to blink and I have about feet knowing your speed help you win this race today well I mean the agenda Autosport cars has been quick all month long and though we missed the poll by just a fraction we know I've been quick and racer and quick on her own so I've just got so much faith in these boys I have to thank them so much for all the hard work voting cars got a nice clear view at turn one and that's a really good start for this race all right Brent Andretti Autosport is back in a big way thanks JB and EE remind everybody to join today's Indianapolis 500 for the first time ever on three calm there will be live 12 in-car cameras of this race and viewers can take whichever driver they would like to follow well race time approaches and coming up the rousing tradition center military with an assist from country star Martina McBride who will sing our National Anthem now we were still there oh say does that star-spangled [Applause] [Music] [Applause] to p-51 and a staple at the air force's modern arsenal the f-16 Fighting Falcon well there is no anticipation no excitement no energy quite like this as we wide down towards the start of the Indianapolis mark 10 lar Castroneves wit is for DES Frankie D comfortable in the back to win his third public JR Hildebrand fair after such a bitter disappointment last year they all the suits their feelings and then ignore them if they are the master this race [Applause] there is a road before me it is a road of everlasting glory you can feel her presence pressure her desire for ruthless effort but today I am a master of my fate today trust must rise against doubt today I can't be late erase the crowd race like no one's watching there's a challenge in this up you get away so they can't draft me one second can make the difference clear the mind feel the silence you can't think about fear respected but never surrender because today is about greatness [Music] about fighting till the last fly say unforgiving focuses and Evi adele is disrespect and you will pay she'll have it verdict can be cruel can be divine [Music] there is a road before now it is a road of resolve of belief [Music] and it lasts 500 miles [Music] that's what it takes to ride with legends the test is heavy but the reward is forever [Music] welcome back to the Indianapolis pre-race show presented by Go Daddy we are only a few minutes from the green flag before we give this magnificent tribute to the American dream as his tradition here at the 500 we honor our active military including the troops currently linked with our broadcast for their barracks in Kuwait nice to have you with his fellows that we pause to remember those who gave their lives in defense of our freedom we focus today on a story that contains a lesson for us all for this Memorial Day and every day I never think why me he never did [Music] he wanted to be put in harm's way to protect our freedom [Music] this place is sad but also peaceful a place of honor I'm here to pay respects to my son an Army Ranger will made the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan almost three years ago he was 21 years old I raised him alone his name is Benjamin I just miss his company every day every day he was proud of his uniform proud of his service proud of his country and I'm proud of him and all the Fallen Heroes we remember this Memorial Day [Music] what [Music] [Music] Oh [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] hi everybody this is Brent Musburger a ritual year a year has been Jim Nabors sneaked back home when Indiana well Jim couldn't make it here today he has not been feeling well and we all wish you the very best so instead we have his recorded version of the deal on that song and actually listen please sent your thoughts and prayers to the family of Dan Wheldon who's number 98 champions car will circle the track at Jim Nabors beautiful voice fills the Indiana air [Applause] [Music] [Music] you won't hey since Allah spray runs through the fields are you when I dream of all ha [Music] [Applause] he's watching home the white an overkill [Applause] in sport as members of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway memory all the doors [Applause] [Applause] very long right there is no sin in sport quite like this one as where where we start the Indianapolis 500 the balloon is moving skyward and the 33 nervous warriors butterflies about to set sail it speeds of excess of 200 miles will be this year's champion Ryan Briscoe city dr. Faisel and they of Chester Davitt will be ticketed whether for the fourth time now the gentlemen who will take you through this great race let's go upstairs to party read scott goodyear and eddie cheever party all right Thank You Brandon hello again everybody and what the fans here at Indianapolis are about to experience can be summed up in two words sensory overload thirty-three cars screaming down the front stretch at well over 200 miles an hour the rush of air will be so strong that whatever's not tied down is probably going to get blown away and don't even think about talking to the first next to you because they won't be able to hear a single word you say yes this is Indianapolis that's about speed and Martin this is the most exciting green flag a driver will ever take in their career but it's also the most dangerous now three whites start going down to turn one and constant speeds up over 200 miles an hour for this entire event but they're willing to assume the risk just to get their likeness on the BorgWarner trophy and you know what that glory is like get each eevr you won this race back in 98 this is a very unique event we do not have to explain to anybody what the Indianapolis 500 is wherever you are in the globe and a very special thing happens they add the words in front of her name wherever you're introduced it is Indianapolis chapter there's also some things that get into grained in our soul and also the great finishes that we've been able to see over the course of time in Scott you're involved in the closest ever still to this day I can't believe in finishing second doesn't feel great my only thought about JR Hildebrand last year 799 turns perfectly the last one didn't work out Dan Wheldon came through to win [Music] but the cars are out on the first of the pace laps and as we get a chance let's check in our GoDaddy what to watch for two things really jump out at us the new car new engines and the temperatures let's first go back to the new car and the new entrance when you go to your look the dealer you probably think about two things fuel economy and having enough horsepower to get out of those tight situations well it's not that much different here is it's got well the car that we use last year was in use since 2003 so brand-new cars for every team and driver right now Chevrolet and Lotus have come along to join Honda on the engine front the big questions are who's got the most horsepower who has the best reliability and fuel economy we play a huge part in today's race and any we could be in for a record-setting day and it seems almost certain that 1/2 points with this race which is always a critical point repeat these cars are new it's the first time they've been at the Annapolis 500 which is my far and away the most 500 grooming miles they will do it is all up to making sure that you can stay focused the whole race and the heat will affect the drivers the cars and the mechanics that have to get this done second well there you see the cars coming around turn number four for the first of the pace laps here in front of this huge [Music] [Applause] hundred thousand [Music] [Applause] [Music] the blasts of his wife the enemy guy Yeti he is going to be the driver drive-ins and dives and there he is behind the wheel of the beautiful Chevrolet pace car for the 23rd time it is pacing the field at Indianapolis this year it's the 2013 Chevrolet 60th anniversary Corvette zr1 that's this most capable man in history the guy who's got the ride of a life that's Thomas from Toledo Ohio he was the winner for this race and you want to get that rod while you have to visit shop on.com and enter the start and IZOD IndyCar race in the two-seater with maybe the man is driving it today Mario Andretti official rules at chop and accomm a 10th September 2nd 2012 across the top of the screen you will see the started field all 33 cars with leading the way the pole-sitter in the number two Penske entry Ryan Briscoe while they continue to warm up the tires let's warm up pit lane get it last-minute update first up is Vince Welch Marty pasty perfect is a phrase we often hear at Indianapolis and well-deserved Roger Penske and his teams have won this race 15 times Penske driver willpower hopes for some perfection today but his team over the past couple of years has had issues in the pits costing them a chance at victory will power today he comes to this race on a three race winning streak and if he's to get that elusive Indy win he and the entire team will need to be Penske perfect Jamie little the 2011 Indy 500 is won and ready Autosport would like to forget two cars failed to make the field and a third Marco Andretti barely made his way in but what a difference a year makes three cars qualified in the top four all three of those drivers hoping to bring owner Michael Andretti his third win here at Indy in just seven years Rick Dobrow well Chip Ganassi x' team has won two in the last four Indy 500 so they come here expecting to do well but this month has been a rough one they have struggled they're hunting it just didn't seem have a pump that qualified mid pack the drivers were frustrated but the team kept working as a result when they put in the new race engine on carbon the last practice before the race they were fast as dario was number one Scott Dixon number twos have been the great race card not necessarily what it means there's a good chance you'll see them on the hunt at the end of this race dr. Jerry punch you know those heavyweights from those power teams have to be considered among the favorites but there are some very special Cinderella stories that bear watching how about a 21 year old fresh-faced rookie from Tennessee to Joseph Newgarden pull off the upset and could this be the year that finally gram Raya follows in the footsteps of his famous father who won here in 1986 and then there's a sentimental favorite how about Tony Kanaan how special would it be for Tony to stand right here and celebrate the memory of his dear friend and last year's winner Dan Wheldon folks we don't know who's going to win this year's Indianapolis 500 but what we do know is this it will change their life for Marty got some great stuff from all for you guys be careful down there in that heat with those fire suits on along with all the other crew members it is now 86 degrees and it is still getting hotter this broadcast is available in Spanish all you have to do is activate your si P button it is presented by espn2 fortes as we continue on the pace laps we have a total of 12 onboard 10 cameras and let's show you of Charlie Kimball's view he's going to be starting in the 14th position the man who finished third last year Graham Rahal he is going to be starting 12th and of course you already heard from Jenny little about lying on her way from zero to hero in one year didn't qualify now he's on the outside of the front row Marco Andretti has said from the beginning of this month that he has a car that's capable of winning the race this might just be the year willpower has dominated the season up to here but he has yet to have one really good 500 and Tony Kanaan he'd met here his first seven starts but he's never won here and this year he brings along his childhood friend Rubens Barrichello who raised 19 years in Formula one he hopes to have an opportunity finished well here today junior hildebrand remember [Music] before we go she'll go history of our own here notice that you get a new Dario Franchitti bullets as he's driving the car and out the front we've never been able to bring this to you before we have one located in Dario's car and also James Hinchcliffe now James will also serve as our in-race reporter we may get a chance to talk to him during one of the caution periods later in the race a three-time winner here he4s forth has a great shot today and his team hey ski teammate Ryan Briscoe on the pole also has a great shot here today remember 500 miles for this race let's quickly check on godaddy.com rules of racing Scott well this year the rules are racing changed just a little bit since last year the pace car now replaced the field all the way through turn four and then go into pit lane or not only to start but also to restart previous years the car has ducked in just at the end of the pace lap and left the drivers pace that feel that is changing also something new this year you starting in the restart and looks good when you come here year after year you realize that this track actually talks to you it shares its memories as they come down the front straightaway ladies and gentlemen there is the pace car greater pain welcome turn to the Kronus [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] got some action in the middle of back there you see two and three cards know why that's Ryan Briscoe well they make it through time to eat so far so good James Hinchcliffe once the laid the first lap and it looks like he has got himself later officially at the other one James Hinchcliffe we're still at that part of the race where nobody of settle down they're still trying to use [Music] and these will cause of you I would not be surprised to see Ryan Briscoe repay the favor to James Hinchcliffe here very shortly on the front stretch but that's these first two left and you can tell the cars are really set up well because everybody is very confident and aggressive Josef Newgarden goes around EJ Viso in garden that black and yellow it's awfully hard to see the numbers on this new car as we go for the battle for the lead again we may have another lead change Briscoe officially leads lap two this is exactly what the cause but these lead cars punch a very big hole in the air and it's very hard to hold the lead and if you're behind you can make a run on the car have you seen twice in the first four laps two laps to leech ages there is Marco Andretti he now running in the third position Ryan hunter-reay in the fourth spot more with Marco let's ride along [Music] Prada like just possibly air here we go well hitched cliff tried to get underneath a bit better of it and it is very slick if you get above the race line the track have two diamonds rained on since I've been here all mine and the drivers have been talking about how slippery it is once you get off that rubber what that really means is we the early on in the race you wouldn't expect her to be grit on top of this on the line that you don't want to water off [Applause] that's the concentration level we always talk about at this racetrack there you and I both know it but it's especially hard here this year because of the high heat down the front straightaway again the top four no separate might no more than a car length and a half between each position [Music] the first 10 are trying to separate from the middle it is Briscoe followed by hitch clip then Andretti Ryan hunter-reay Tony Kanaan has now moved into the fifth spot then it's Elio Castroneves Joseph Newgarden would power Alex Tagliani that is your top 10 right now [Music] here we go again down the front straightaway the traffic that the guys were talking about take the lead and what I love about this guy's as I look out from our broadcast window nobody has sat down in their seats since the green flag sat down all of a sudden hitch blip look at the gap he has opened up and now the battle is for third the two Andretti Autosport teammates and is Ryan hunter-reay in the yellow and white car going down low underneath Marco Andretti knee takes the spot very difficult as a race driver to sit behind a car in front but at you and I talked this month a maybe that might be the best thing to do to try and conserve fuel remember new cars new inches of lard is being lured here by the driver driving as we see another draft going on again a Ryan Briscoe returning the favor it makes a nice the green machine is we like to call the Go Daddy Cartesian you know what they're doing that it's very bright helping each other because they're not trying to put anybody down the backstretch it's a pitch cliff trying to reel back in ryan briscoe a little bit deeper is momentarily with Ryan hunter-reay let's get more on what's going on with Graham Rahal from Pitts Welch third place finisher a year ago as you mentioned the last thing you want is a problem early but Reijo reported his mule light is blinking again now are you all are hey do not worry money think those of you over here as your driver worrying about something mechanical this early in the race well that can really take away from your focus sometimes you see its head bopping down probably looking down trying to figure out what's going on inside the car I assure you that car was completely fall with 18.5 gallons of fuel but you have to put that out of your mind but in a different department and just work on the car because you know the crew will tell you what or your pit stop for fuel that's exactly what they did they told don't focus on that this time it's put not on board [Music] turn to and again we've seen that pattern once they get through one they seem to open up that church down the Backstairs and then the second-place car seems to close in in three and four if this first group of four start working together like the first two are they might actually be able to put a distance between the pack behind them and that's what we should lose a race to refer a thief but as you know when you're sitting inside that you just want to go fast you wanna concentrate harder now for sure the team's top drivers let's settle into a pace let's understand what the mileage is going to be with this new tooth back to the engine well as these guys continue to Duke it out and has been Ryan Briscoe and James Hinchcliffe giving us a one heck of a show inch cliff is right now in second but 500 go back if we go side by side he could be at first [Music] the great thing about side-by-side you saw in the past by Marco Andretti around James Hinchcliffe putting him into the second position let's listen it on James's radio we might know why so he's talking about fuel mileage I've already all we got a yellow as the 69 or the 39 car I should say that's a great day he's got a flat left front you can see the wall right there for a flat spot at the tire [Music] Brian's such a great driver with all his experience that he has is where to watch replay here down low looks like you might have got in just a little bit early and a little bit low on the white line Eddie and the car came around and I cannot believe he did not hit the wall this reminds me in 1985 the speed would be the very same spot that's where Danny Sullivan spun right in front of Mario Andretti all right we get ready for a pit stop action here on lap 15 we can tell you the two Lotus cars they've been struggling and getting enough speed they did not meet the 105 percent minimum both Jean Alesi and Simona de Silvestro have been black flag and brought in now they can try and do something to get back out and get above that limit but it looks like a lady is already finding out I don't think he wants to get back into it but it's been a very long month for Alessi and Lotus and he we spoke to him yesterday he said he loves his race he wants to come back next year maybe in a more competitive car and maybe notice turns around and improves their engine so now we'll find out who wants to stop and take fuel maybe change tires work on the adjustments will be coming up on the completion of lap number 15 everybody is coming in so let's send it down to Vince Welch as he gets ready for Tony Cudahy Tony Kanaan likes his race car he says it's a little bit fidgety coming out of turn four but otherwise he's comfortable with the way it's handling they did have a little bit of a radio problem prior to the race he had to change his earphones but otherwise it's i embroidered stop because he didn't any changes the car with that guy on the left hand by James hitch clip we have trouble on pit row guys Dario Franchitti had issues party and we talked about mistakes being oh so costly in this race and Dario has the first one for target chip ganassi racing and they are already taking the front nose section off come on time he got putted got hunted in the front nose went into the tires that were sitting there so they'll smartly change the nose in case there was any damage that was EJ Viso in the five that got into it if he's going to have a property obviously did this is the perfect time to have at the beginning the race because he can fight his way back and there was nothing really turbo that just goes to show you how private of its own more with Dario now watch his hands on the right hand side you know you're expecting going smoothly Eddy as we always calculate this turns the back end comes around a quick response by Dario and right now he's going what in the world was that [Music] and we hear that Newgarden has stalled the pitch Jamie he was stalled there for an extended period of time they're trying to figure out what exactly went wrong he just got it fired he is down in a way remember this is a rookie making his first start here but a lot of pressure on his shoulders he has a fast race car underneath him but he has some time to make up now Marty all right so he came back out on to the racetrack it is James Hinchcliffe who got out first here at Indianapolis the 500 just into lap number 16 [Music] here we are at the Indianapolis 500 our telecast presented by godaddy.com after 17 laps there is dario franchitti he is right now shown in 29th position and here's the reason why nobody happened early we got pine tree cover so actually he was a little calmer than I expected green flag has flown and boy hitch cliff gets Snowbird and so does several others including Elio Castroneves we got three four [Music] don't want to be on the next plane [Music] what a exciting remember first restart with these new cars first raced this year with these new cars upon an oval and they were doing to a single filer ease I've been turned there was no more room it was willpower you saw back there here we go side by side that JR Hildebrand the number four car as another car peels off heading for pit lane that's Newgarden in the very back of the channel very you don't want to be touching them my life that was sebastian phage Saavedra he had a pit speed violation so he has to do a back pass through as he makes his way down the law long pit lane meanwhile out on the track the lead by the 26 of Marco Andretti and Marty when you talk about spin and speed violation they're supposed to be 60 miles an hour on the pit entrance all the way from his car the last lap was Ryan Briscoe this time looks like it's going to be only okay [Music] Scott Dixon you can tell the two targeted cards apart look for the white trim on the side pods and the mirrors for Dixon's car that'll help you identify those two now for Marco Andretti who was leading the Senate race a few trip knob that's on a steering wheel back just a little bit any to turn start to save fuel I don't think that's possible to do I think poker game that's almost be fun it's like saving money it's a few dollars here a few dollars here that towards the end of them might make the difference in what land exactiy for that situation with Ryan Briscoe good draft down the front stretch and sliding underneath Marco Andretti in turn one and another lead change here at Indianapolis as a Marco Andretti is now under attack from his teammate James hitch play for Marco when he did get in the lead seventh Indianapolis 500 easement led the race now he's got a wheel in Ryan Briscoe always be faster around here than one so the leading car is almost a sitting ducks cut and you know when I was matching both fuel trim you know I bet if you turn the fuel trim back because you're trying to push so much air with these cars you slow the car down maybe you don't have that chance to be able to run the front like they did last year sort of trying to save fuel well guys not to get too technical but the Chevrolets we heard make much fuel as possible because of the sheer heat that's being generated by the day today in those engines we'll keep it tabs on that as far as Marko and thread his concern right now he came into this race very common more than he has ever been we talked to him I expect to win I mean this one show up to do and I truly believe I mean if this car replicates the last time I drove it on Sunday and their coach Marco just as he finishes up going right around Ryan Briscoe this Sunday at Indianapolis and as that pass was completed from our place right here the crowd when the addres D takes lead we have at nine lead changes between three different leaders and you can see the top six are still all well within contact but Noah man he has managed to go away Oriol Serbia looks like he has a flat tire he has to come it Rick what he have a tire go down they said come in and change it must be safe that's a tough break for Serbia but it does happen early in the race getting time to fight his way back working lap number 25 as they head around turn to whoa hitch cliff got hi there at the third car in your picture you don't get away with that very often that's just turning in late to the turn but possibly the car is not working as well as it did for him maybe a little understeer the front doesn't give you the grip that you want when you turn the wheel or he missed his turning point but you won't make that mistake can get away with very often any and if you do your heart rates probably up around the 200 zone all right while this continues want to go back and show you the restart as you'll get a chance on the single file it didn't look much single about it as look at this five wide at one point [Music] [Music] there's already miles an hour [Applause] all right there so now you see Marco Andretti still in front of Ryan Briscoe Tagliani Tony Kanaan [Applause] this is lap 26 everybody in the stands was given those glasses in memory and Dan Wheldon a lot of those folks ready Ashley the only cause so far that Spanish put some distance in this big lapse in the wall on the rest of the field they'll do the tribute again and there is the 98 that's Brian hurt his team who Dan throw for last year that tallies Tagliani and he risco and they will do the tribute one more time Latin idea comes for the too far dollars that Dan had 26 in 98 21 is to Indianapolis 500 stay with us we'll be back with you after a word from your ABC stations the Indianapolis Motor Speedway the motor racing capital of the world and one day each year all eyes focus on this two and a half mile oval we had an unbelievable start to this race passing slicing and dicing we've already had nine lead changes we've also had incidents in pit lane when Dario Franchitti got hit from behind by EJ Viso who has their likeness on the board were still a long way from determining that right now it is Marco Andretti out in front of his teammate James Hinchcliffe followed in third by Ryan Briscoe let's check in with dr. very much and we documented Etta the Lotus engine in spite of all the efforts wasn't quite understated John a lady that called you in and asked you to pull in given your glorious Formula One career how tough is it for you here first time an Indy to have some in you know I give my heart thank you my pleasure to be here was right to be back physically be very much we are so going with the so the regulation we have to stick with it and we've been stopped Jonel AC out of him but he did say Marty he will be back next year and that would be a pleasant wonderful surprise to have it back again we have the word from the Indy car whistles there will be no action taken on the EJB so for that incident with the 50 car we considered it a racing incident can reset the tongue live here it is mark when ready James hit me Ryan Briscoe and Alex Tagliani and it's your top five [Music] there is TK a bit superstitious it's his 11th Indy 500 it's the carnival it's his lucky number and he says maybe today Indianapolis will smile on me on board with his guard here watching his first left I'm trying to put myself in the position driver Scott of a driver trying to think what have I work really help me at the end of the race right now I don't think that want to be leading going to the last three left because they seems that nobody can actually get away [Music] while this actually continues let's check in with Rick Doral now takuma silos on the move Bobby Rahal just told him he's the fastest guy on the track but more importantly gave him some advice on passing let us know what do you say a little bit there and that's what the COO Masato saying that Bobby Ray always been so good at this man giving him a little bit of advice taking them in the right direction all right they're just maybe taking it down a notch he got plenty of time in this race don't rush him you know it's very interesting cuz she's speaking with model drivers Andy was talking with Bobbi ray ball the other night talking about this these cars are more difficult to pass in the public previous cars because the smaller displacement we are now learning to charge engines instead of normally aspirated engines so if you lift your foot off the throttle and you put it back on it's a bit slower response and it's difficult and you have to time the pass correctly the passing setup starts and turns one and two phrases if you're gonna complete it down your dream French leader Marco Andretti has now had the longest stint up front with between the three leaders he has now led a total of 15 but 13 consecutive that's how fast the passes were coming early in the race take a look at the 14 the HJ Ford entry of Mike Conway remember two years ago that late race crashing wind him up into the fence but here he is the best mover on the racetrack has picked up 18 spots and he now finds himself in 11th all the way from right Castroneves is one in three times so he's probably sitting back here figuring out how they're running their race he's accumulate as much experience as a AJ Foyt in this corner that makes a big difference in the place Latinas whatever I drove for him here he always had something special a doing a fine job right now and he has got the Honda power Castroneves in the Chevy right in front and there is your top five and there is the legend the four-time winner hey Jay boy we're side by side Catherine is running in the 28th position and is now two laps down [Music] when Marko was completing are up in front we're one quarter the way through this race we've had six different leaders and 12 and Leo Castroneves finds himself having to fight his way back after problems on pit lane here's what happened very uncharacteristic of Penske that the rear tire did not go on and they almost left like that last year he's very lucky to actually watch them if this hands up and say no I I'm not ready holy then he went it ends up Elio comes back out onto the race room in the 12th position and there was a little bit of fire on the right hand side also which they manageable so we're gonna go side by side there's Elio back out on the track with toady's in 12 they're all chasing that man go away a Canadian a Polish Motor Speedway Marco Andretti leads by 3.6 seconds over Scott Dixon as we go on board let's talk about what's coming up on the calendar because next week - start nationwide soon the NHRA has the Super Nationals qualifying Saturday 4:30 Eastern on ESPN then switch over the ESPN to sync time on Sunday for the finals izod indycar surge warhead mirabela at 73 30s right here on ABC join us on the conversation on Twitter hashtag Indy 500 on more there with hello here is your race leader and that's the beauty has out the front Marco Andretti by one point six seconds over a charging Scott Dixon remember he started this race back in 15 his groomsmen and there he is a white trim on that red target machine now another four seconds back is third place that's James Hinchcliffe and that first full stint hitch booth did not get as good a mileage and Briscoe we can tell you that just got by him so he has slipped back another position so move Briscoe up to third there's Hinchcliffe and then Takuma Sato is running a very strong fifth there they are all thrilled after Sato was told by Ray hull to be a little bit more careful at this point the race has done how do you pull off your passes he seems to have settled into a very good pace let's go back and show you the past where Brisco gets around James Hinchcliffe it all starts back there and turns three and four the drafting takes place down the front stretch and the slipstream happens and you dive on the inside and complete it very nicely but have you noticed how quickly the car that gets passed gets right back into the ground [Music] there you see the 41 coming back out that's wait Cunningham he's 15 laps down after its extended stop how about grammar a whole second generation driver let's check in with Vince Welch Graham Rahal says when you put together a good app here nothing feels but it's not feeling so good right now [Music] better in the crap and they're pulling me for everything over here we got a lot of a jump rope to stay in it you know confidence and encouragement to grab a home but he's concerned maybe too much downforce in the car for the way typical decisions the team has to make as to how much downforce they're going to put in the car but they have the option here Scott of taking down for herself in the back which we thought was going to happen later in the roast not this way the way these cars have so much grip on the road remember they love 2,000 pounds of downforce you can almost take these parts will them upside down on the ceiling they have the grip because of those venturi tunnels that are underneath and it really helps them get through the turns here really well another pass about ready to happen James each clip duty to go around burglar what a great job these guys are doing so now he's the one that's punching the hole in the air and Crisco behind it is filling that void and we'll see help how few laps it takes for him to close that gap again Wow about Takuma Sato right there he is looking to get around Briscoe as well lose a little ground as they head into three have to remember the two cars here working together will always be faster than one so if they work together they can shut down that distance very quickly this battle is a full seven seconds behind race and ready and ready still in front by over a second the second place Scott Dixon Sato takes an outside line and a defensive line taken by the two car of Ryan Briscoe [Applause] [Music] and think about the power plant more that you have going on right now with and reading the Chevrolet Dickson is in second in a Honda another couple shredder lays with James Hinchcliffe and Ryan Briscoe and then fifth place kuma Soto in a Honda remember there's a lot of fire line right now between these engine manufacturers we mentioned before that the two bonus cars have had problems that they have now removed themselves from the race but let's go back and show you ryan briscoe checking out the mirrors we can show you both his view and what he's doing look at that head calmly just checking the mirrors to see how much the driver come up behind the minute sneaked on to his Inn completes the pass to see that on the right-hand side of the screen no sense in being defensive at this time in the race [Music] Sato continues trying to close the gap on Briscoe let's check in again with Rick Dobrow talking with Bobbi ray Paul before the race in them he says sod is one of those drivers you'd like to talk up through the race get mobile advice give him a little nurturing as he goes through the race and as I've listened on the radio that's exactly what's been going on you heard that a little bit earlier when he was giving advice he's constantly on the radio and there you see Sado making the move on Briscoe and he comes clear tonight bad it certainly was sohow Briscoe finds himself back in that fifth spot and closing on him will be teammate willpower he's a few seconds behind that the group of three four different teams in the top five you're on more with James Hinchcliffe who is running in third and the view out the back as well there's his teammate that's the man who's leading marco andretti he is now led a total of 37 laps we got 13 lead changes stay with us we'll be back after a word from your ABC station marco andretti attempting to become the first American driver since Sam Hornish vanquished him in the final lap in 2006 but anytime that and ready takes the lead in Indy you cross your fingers there is something known as the end ready curse yes Marco's grandfather was able to win this back in 1969 [Music] Jamie now five car right now it's hardly too [Music] all the other cars and you know trying to stick to what's going on here too so we keep you in line here nerve wracking standing he's got a look at this one we're gonna keep our eyes leaving at a third when here is an owner at Indianapolis rent okay Jimmy we're gonna pick it up over here thank you yeah there is marco andretti continuing around this racetrack his laps have been in the 217 range guys he's ahead of the Scott Dixon but not as much it's closing down it's under a second between first and second place let's get some other things updated for you during the commercial break Tony Kanaan made a pit stop after only 19 laps were tracking down trying to find out if there was a fuel issue or something else he is now one lap down in 25th position topic back to the third position on the racetrack is Takuma Sato he is nine seconds behind the race lead but right now he has gotten around Ryan Briscoe let's look back and show you exactly so Sano just coming behind James Hinchcliffe making a nice move member these cars do allow for great drafting making that move down the front stretch and going into turn one as we've seen many times before remember you're entering turn one at 220 miles an hour so you want to get past that car you're passing in due time to be able make the correct line to set up for one Marty and Briscoe we should say also got around hits cliff so it's now Andretti Dixon Sato Briscoe Hinchcliffe had new gardeners in Jamie [Music] year so he's making his way back down for a stop here the problem is when it gets into the box he can't get it in here to exit much better at that time for Joseph Newgarden he's young right now one lap down in the 26th position whoa that was close for Sato don't move out too many times if Bobbi ray Hall saw that one I think his heart skipped a beat it's so difficult they're going so fast here the length of a football field in less than a second we talk about all the time that you cannot these terms but at this point of the race he's still trying maybe to find his rhythm he's passing cars and finds himself in third place so he's probably a bit too excited he's got a long way to go let's go back and show you in ultra slow motion Dalit close this was and see his outside tires you can see driving over the rubber marbles and those are starting to come off the tires themselves you need to be cautious the next time you go through the next set of turns your tires are clean and not sliding he's probably has his right eye closed we've got that close to the absolutely right look it's right behind Davis there you see Dario Franchitti as he has now Brisco Franchitti remember he was 18 in 28th position after getting a new nose here he is getting around Brisco moving into fourth he had a very cold and calculated March all the way through the field we have to get through every one of those cars Scott one at a time and do it without putting his arm age this is somebody [Music] he's trying to reel in very calmly on the steering wheel look underneath his helmet time you'll actually see a little bit of flapping going on from the Bella cloud lips there that is Scott Dixon on the move as he gets around since slower traffic there was a jvzoo and Franchitti is coming under attack there's very little he can do for Katie's just running quicker [Music] that's Frankie Diaz he gets around Takuma Sato what he is making this look easy that's the biggest distance I've seen a driver managed to put on a car that he passed it less than half a lap and here comes your race leader Marco Andretti he is making a pit stop here on lap 74 Jamie time let's hit our marks and get it right four tires and adjustments once again meanwhile his teammate James hitch but making his way all the way down pit road car has been pretty good they'll fill it up with Sunoco fuel once again James henchmen in a way meanwhile we talk to michael andretti keep calling the shop [Music] watch here Marty Marco Andretti gets 29 laps this time on we went 30 on the first go here comes Ryan Briscoe as he is peeled off so his power and capture net so all three of the Penske cars are in the pit lane let's go back to Jamie and that's usually not something we see with Penske they like to have their strategies different with the three cars but they aren't getting all three roger penske on the right hand side ask him she went down horses that no no changes meanwhile Elliott wanted to get a faster stop here they had a problem with the right rear and he has an issue he almost started about a second there's the captain roger penske as they'll come back out on to the racetrack and you're on board with Elio the paddle shifters now because shifters no longer the age pattern as we called it in the old style with a stick shift knob inside the cockpit the reason we're showing you Scott Dixon he is your race leader he is ahead of his teammate Dario Franchitti by 11 seconds so Dixon who started 15th in this race ranked 1860 the target cars have fought their way back into contention do we have to remember that Frankie he had to come all the way from the back had passed every one of those cars to get the position that he's in so now we have two Honda's leading the 500 [Music] get ready Mike Conway was up to third again he is peeling off and making his second round of pit stops so is Graham ray off so right now [Music] with well Nixon as we mentioned he is now coming in so from Dixon he last pitted on lap 48 and now he's coming in on lap 70 so again he's able to make 30 laps so we're starting to see just how far these cars can go and that's a trend that will make a difference got towards the end everyone out here put in the bank you can use at the end Vince you heard Michael city wide open on the entry for sad Nixon fuel mileage hasn't been their strength this year but so far it's been pretty good this is the third straight stop no changes to the chassis for Scott Dixon up in a 18.9 well the target team on the nine side the rodeo today you finish up you can see it he gets back out on track that also Dario Franchitti peeled off and made his pit stop here on lap number 79 Charlie Kimball is again your race leader it's the second time he has left 14 different change let's go on more with Charlie the drive is getting very good fuel mileage just as we say that he is going to come in and get some fresh tires now Mike Conway is going to have to go on a drive-through penalty and this is going to really hurt him yet gotten himself up into the top five all right the word is he hit a crew member coming in and here's what happened oh he got so close to the wall guys that's just one of those things you have to be really calm and collected when you come in the pits you cannot be in a rush Scott as you know you have to hit your marks and they are so lucky that nobody got hurt there oh and I would imagine as a driver that he would feel very bad doc you have more yeah that was Rodney cloths my out of Hampstead Texas and he was the fueler a huge scratch on the track here at Indianapolis our second caution has come out and it looks like it is Mike Conway and willpower involved he's a no sooner does Conway get back out on the track then he is involved in a major incident here with willpower so power who had a three race win streak here on the series and hoping to get his first Indianapolis 500 win is not going to have it happen today he has he has always had a hard time here at the speedway but that is just a very good example of that probably or shouldn't have happened it all started with a bad pit stop Scott didn't and then that you think about that when you get out on the track you have to see what made this accident happen but you know when you think about the drivers having to crash they're in the car they're moving I think about willpower his wife Elizabeth actually works for a team here Dreyer & Reinbold team and does the PR work for oil service so she's busy in the pit lane here when she sees that those knocks on the track she said I always look to see if it's my husband see Conway's now come out of the pit lane he's actually slow on the track it looks like he sat Motorama to the car Eddie it's just loose on him and you know something will powers coming from the burning he is just going to be end up taking over he had nowhere to go will power an absolute no to go and look how the car turns into the worst angle that a car can take well don't just remember a few years ago the exact spot where Conway had his crash a couple of years ago when he wrote up in over grind hunter-reay so the car hit the wall comes out and then you see the Verizon machine of willpower just slice underneath it a little bit and for Conway he's riding up on the top of the wall Eddie and luckily the car comes back down as we call it on all four obviously wheels missing but a ride that Mike Conway certainly does not want to take and properly lifts a little bit of what happened to him two years ago we want to remind everybody watching this horrific accident that turned out with no drivers getting hurt that these are brand new cars that have been engineered to make sure they are much safer and impacts like this and it did everything it was expected to do but that whole accident started from a bad pit stop and then it just too generated me look like he's actually going slow when he started spinning alright let's go on board with willpower and just listen that's how fast it happens in India here's on Helios you [Music] [Applause] hello there hallo bouncing tire I've had that on my career and you never know where it's going Elio did a great job of going down the pit entrance and exit lame the warm-up plane as we call it I thought that happened in turn four that actually happens and turns one and two let's go to dr. Jerry punch with AJ Ford AJ you wouldn't when your driver hit the crew member that's what the problem was that that produced the accidents that right yeah that's what started he slid in and you know he had my few of man knocked him over and that's what broke the front wing and you know we had a hell of a run going he come from what 27th of four so we we had our game plan when everything is working good but you know to win this Indy 500 everything got to follow your way and one little thing goes wrong like that is bad and these these he's a competitive driver and I'm happy about that well then we're gonna bring you back in and change the wing but they never got a chance guys well now we know why he got so squirrely going down into turn number one and unfortunately both P and willpower are now out of this race this is this is one of those races where everything has to go perfect to find yourself in that leading group those last 10 laps Scott you cannot have anything go wrong it just tends to multiply itself quickly once it up to speed and you have a wing that doesn't work that's exactly what happened turned in the car not there anymore we have four cars officially out of the race with power and Conway joining John Elise in Simona de Silvestro two cars behind the wall Bryan Clauson and Wade Cunningham they are 35 and 38 laps down you know anyone you talk about there's two races in one here Indian actors because as you mentioned to get to maybe just 10 laps left to go and then you ready for that shooter unfortunately these guys are not and for willpower who is coming into this race leading the points championship it's not only not finished in the Indy 500 geostain Joseph Newgarden makes a pit stop under this caution he is one lap down shown in 21st position right now the cleanup is going to continue and this is what this crash looks like in ultra slow motion watch the safer barrier do its job we're gonna go side by side here at the Indianapolis 500 [Music] we're under our second caution as a two-car crash takes out Mike Conway and willpower you can see the winged dragon right front part of the wing is dragging on the ground the aerodynamic balance this car is totally upset he tries to catch it he can't he blocks the only area where willpower can go he tries to break he gets under the car lifts it into the fence rides the fence and you'll see Castroneves in a second who makes it through the accident they were both very looking he splits the middle to get through first and then all of a sudden look at this and watch how close this is folks the suspension though it doesn't look like there's any damage you know a good thing because it hit the tire and wheel assembly so it actually absorbed it but the most important thing that I think I learned from that how calm he was he's going through an accident just everything happened in front of him and then turned the wheels almost coming into the cockpit calmly got on the radio and just said hey I need a restaurant tire alright so while we continue the cleanup there is one more look at what could have been Wow it was ugly but luckily both Mike Conway and willpower are a-okay [Music] the mother's rice rundown will get us caught up right from the start Briscoe and Hinchcliffe they traded the lead there was trouble in the pits Frank Eddie was nicked in the back that so Frankie he was slowed down and he's made a huge jump since then in third place new garden also had difficulty down in the pit as did Elio who is slow down Castroneves is now 10th over and of course we are still under caution here with marco andretti in very happy and is the problem but what's interesting about the father he's not a direct communication with Marco here today then of course we also had a very unfortunate crash but as eddie cheever said with these new cars it is remarkable that Mike Conway was able to walk away from this after he was riding up on the wall like that and willpower very lucky and then pass whenever it's by with that tire bouncing in his direction and it's got you said it was because that tire just touches the top of the and hold on as he said how calm was Elio Castroneves well that was going out on the track and some morning I think we are I'll tell you we are so fortunate that we did not have a tragedy with that accident where it seemed at first the safety did its job on this new DW 12 as we are now working lap number 87 as you see the circuit on Elio Castroneves Marco Andretti out in front of Scott Dixon and Dario Franchitti that's right target Chip Ganassi Zinn second and third Jamie what do you have while we keep talking about the heat down here Marco Andretti on the radio just moments ago [Applause] saying his boot is melting really three wide four wide starred as everybody going there is Franchini further back remember they do not move the black cars until the final 20 laps so the number of these cars in this pack are a lap or two down nuts on this clean town Jen is going to have to deal friend Katie that first part you see is the blue and white 77 aside he is one lap down at 8/8 he is the first one the late race leader is Martin stick allah sawas he's trying to get is for position more Witkin ah now you think that the car that's leading this group could easily pull over to one side that are gonna go by that's the worst possible thing he can do he has to keep his face got so everybody can Claude Lee make the way around them because if you lift off on the throttle norman's traffic jam it's 2.2 litre turbocharged and take your foot off from you been the drivers saying the response it's not there it takes a while to get back up to speed there since cliff on the left ear sprayed Ryan hunter-reay and out front that is Marco Andretti now he is going around Simon panel as we pointed out patch snow is a lap down right behind its second place behind back now there you see the red and white target machine of Scott Dixon he should get around him here Sato is shown in third and here it comes Oh demand for more prods and a Beatrice has spun it and make contact with the wall she is down in turn number two and our third caution is out this is her second race remember she ran a race just over in Brazil looking forward to this because she's trying to catapult the event here at Indianapolis to gain some more sponsorship to get back into the series full time a very talented driver and maybe not too much damage for her to be able to get back into the race Marty she finished 21st back in 2010 21st again and last year she did was the only car that did not get any practice time on carburation day on Friday let's go back and show you exactly what happened Dan down on the bottom cars just coming around a little bit her line looked good Eddie so maybe the back end of the cars just a little bit loose as we call it oversteer that's when the back end wants to pass the front certainly looks like that's the case let's watch her line she's starting to come through as we mentioned yes she goes off towards the turn something's just a little crazy let's ride along and just sort of watch [Music] and the second car that was coming up on Ana there was the 20 of edy carpenter when that happens in front of you Eddie boy your heart rate starts going doesn't it and you don't think about it just reacts you have to be an automatic you can't be thinking which part of the track are they going to go to you just instinctively tried to figure out where it's going to bounce and try to avoid it early that's why they're not getting into the car then they happen early they tend to get the spin-out on the way then they find themselves and though the track were there more the bigger problem is the people that are arriving and it looks like we're gonna have some takers on pit lane go Andretti is coming down the race leader's several others fight one you saw Ryan hunter-reay change his mind at the very last minute so they make their pitstop from high above those seats were sold folks a lot of folks are getting under the shade and getting some fluids because it is hot let's go down to Richter Brule Takuma Sato comes in no adjustments on the car they made a slight wing adjustment last time he gets out very cleanly and safely likes the car right so there's Sato going back out there is James Hinchcliffe in the number 27 oh they got a problem the left finger not a guitar luckily for them this is under its cliff comes back out now for a crew member that couldn't get the service work perform they feel really bad the rest of the guys in the team will rally around them saying hey don't worry about it next stop we'll do it right we are working lap number 92 we have two opposite strategies now Dixon stayed out with Frankie they are shown as first and second on the racetrack right now with the last time Frankie D and Dixon Pittman was on lap 78 Ryan hunter-reay on lap 74 [Music] go back to show you Ryan given the the fake to everybody I'm gonna change my mind all right so we are still trying to an immediate respect ooh they finally got her under tow stay with us we'll be back this message in a word from our ABC station [Music] under our third caution here at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway if we may get an idea now about fuel strategy because Marco Andretti is now 11th after stopping here back on lap number 91 up front is Scott Dixon Dario Franchitti they stopped last on 78th let's the strategist for the 26 of so let's explain that guys well it tells you what Martha was seeing up those guys are coming in for fuel and as a driver you sorta wanna do what the leaders do or if you're later you hold up the guys behind you are doing exactly what you have up your sleeve whoa look at this on pit out and that's one of the things that Marco is upset about because make a cheese with by first ghost view number and the peeper 29 she now has a gearbox problem and can't keep it in gear let's quickly check in with Richter parole now let's get talked to Chip Ganassi it seems we've entered the strategy phase you chose to leave your guys out why I Rick we only used four gallons of fuel you know it's just a splash oil use so I don't know that you know those guys obviously aren't getting the mileage we are but I don't know what that means at this point in the race all right thanks a lot Jim they have gotten 30 laps under green both those cars and he sound like a Cheshire Cat single file restart here at Indianapolis and up front it is Scott Dixon they accelerate down the front now there are lap traffic cars in that mix as well there Frankie about the fifth car back on the right side of the screen down low in the red sighs I hate on is where everybody has to keep their line with Sebastian Saavedra right alongside of Dario Franchitti [Music] boy the way these cars are slicing across this racetrack the second car in line issues great job he's trying to do much the same sort of thing you know Zelo Castroneves was going along direction he's under attack there [Music] Franchitti getting around the 20s the ohm and Connor Ryan hunter-reay so Frank even now backed up into second after Ryan on a race new stuff around on the outside of lap earlier [Music] don't markers that are not going as fast as II with the different differential this and what happens I knew when you're doing passing a TV he's trying to make a move at the same time that's Dario Franchitti on the right side of your screen still do get it out with Sebastian Saavedra laughs number 98 [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] that is Suzie Wheldon on the right side of your screen it's been a difficult dan would say right now hey fellas you go back to racing let's do it it is Scott Dixon still up front there he is he's actually the third car in line the two cars in front of him are trying to stay up there hoping to catch a yellow of making it back on the that the car right behind is Alex Tagliani in that 98 he also a lap down and then it's Dixon's teammate Dario Franchitti who is actually in second place there they are what's all this traffic clears out is that the two target we'll start working together they could be more efficient Scott it's saving producing feel when you compare it to the other constant racing and all month long we've heard that the Chevrolets were better in fuel mileage but I will tell you that I have run for Honda before very resourceful they're always working hard always coming up he did that from qualifying also for the race here so I would assume that they've done their homework here and the drivers are very confident it as a point in time because they have something underneath them that they feel that you try to find any all the information we've got throughout and week leading up to pole day was that the Chevrolets we're getting about two laps more than the Honda's but right now here comes Alex Tagliani org and now remember he is trying to get a lap back so Nixon's not gonna mess with him this early in the race or halfway and we are now halfway in this event let's get an update on Scott Dixon Vince the tires have looked good the mechanical balance has been good just as you guys were discussing has been excellent for long as the target they've been shooting for and Dixon has been able to do it when he's been in traffic for instance he was running behind Marco Andretti and then out front they've been real happy with where they're hitting and the fuel mileage number two of the best guys that can make deal when they have to I cannot emphasize enough how important it is for this team to have both cars running this closely because from the strategic point of view that pits could now Scott make them they could set up a plan and they can execute it perfectly because it looks like they're far enough ahead from cars that can bother them and they can just keep on hitting their marks making fuel the more the better off they're gonna be at the end of this game behind them it's Ryan hunter-reay Graham Rahal and yes Justin Wilson has poked his way into the top five we're gonna step aside there is the top five with 99 laps to go at the Indianapolis 500 look at that Cheshire Cat he knows he's got something in the bank right now in Dario Franchitti Oh could he be a three-time winner and how about Dixon maybe a two-time [Music] and here at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway it is target Chip Ganassi with four cars in the top seven Dixon and Franchitti running first and second let's take a look at Firestone weather canoe now air temperature is 90 degrees the track temperature is 130 edit is going up the all-time record back in 1937 Wilbur Shawn throw for four and a half hours in 92 degree heat [Music] let's talk about what the team performance pitch Jenny [Applause] gasps men they're required to wear at the read lair fire suit a long-sleeve Nomex and a full face helmet so the heats starting to get to some of these crews down here it's the humidity you heard marco andretti say his boot is actually melting too his gas pedal in the temperatures only going up party what's the cockpit temperature like guys Ted I think it's probably to the metal gas pedal that is something he's feeling all the way to his body as Jamie mentioned it's only getting worse and you know what it's like getting the sweat just calms here now soaked all the way through your three layer suit and the sweats coming down into your eyes sometimes it's difficult to see but you cannot make a mistake the fact that you're still sweating is a positive the problem is when you stop swimming you got through that 2-liter bottle you have that's if you stop sweating in your mouth gets dry that's when you start making big mistakes because me physiologically you're this falling type Ryan Briscoe is he slowing does not look as fast right now let's check in he looks like he's working on the tools [Music] here is your job girl so we had a clearance we have to go to an emergency setting to get the gear box of punched again so it almost sounds like they come [Music] change the switch on this now the previous lap [Music] but that was absolutely cult thinking on his [Music] seven miles an hour [Music] Ryan Briscoe continues as one of two remaining bullets for Team Penske he continues to motor around this 2.5 mile layout he is shown in 17th position a full 17 point seven seconds behind his history his best finish was fifth and he was driving for Penske but it was Jay Penske that year the three of the last four times he has had crashes they of the race including got collected [Music] all right let's go back and show you the race lead because again we still have several cars in front of Scott Dixon and Dario Franchitti and there they are the two red cars now Scott make me something looking into me right now I wonder why don't the truth Carthon ahead of what they're actually doing this is like a bicycle rights race they're using the cars ahead of them to save fuel every lap they could run at speed somebody else opening up the air for them that's more fuel they managed to save that they will have in the bank at last and those cars that are in front of them Eddie are very happy because of a yellow because they are still the distance of the racetrack behind and lead group that's called a win-win is that it is Ryan hunter-reay has peeled off and he's heading towards you Jamie little calling his driver down pit road earlier on he had a big vibration and he said he kept hitting the rev limiter on the restarts the car seems to be getting better four tires here I'll put Sunoco fuel in it and actually you know changes 9.1 so Ryan comes back out into the fray Scott Dixon continues right behind you not been changed beside the drivers on this race car is a cars new the engines are new other firestone fire mount tires and amazing that these tires have done such a great job under these conditions with these new cars no problems so far and it's giving the drivers a lot of confidence guys with Ryan hunter-reay peeling off the top six positions are Honda's in qualifying it was nine out of ten that were Chevrolet let's listen to Chip Ganassi strategy with his team [Music] it was two on the fixers way she had better mileage all right plus two on the mixture switch so what they have is a little switch for their fuel reading but it tells them how much fuel they want to put in the engine and obviously they have found the sweet point for car junior Hildebrand he is in BRIC junior Hildebrand having a very calm race they had an issue in the first pit stop they have run right now the fuel nozzle but that very first pit stop put them behind Dario Franchitti scar had spun in front of him they have very long pit stop we've been working hard to overcome that ever since and he was shown in 16th spot as he came in right now Chip Ganassi has got to be really feeling good not only does he have his two guys running first and second but he has Charlie Kimball into fifth and now Graham Rahal he's got to peel off and head down pit road but all of them are in the top six until this pit stop by rayo here he comes tires [Music] to make a chassis change service of the car will not turn in traffic serious serious understeer he said it's bad by myself and I guess the question is did maybe striking that tire change something up there that's causing the car to push that's a possibility but those pen skis never have really been as fast as the knesset cars trailer brakes coming at me it looks like you know this is like this is like exactly what we saw in carpeting and a/c teams seem to have [Music] Chevrolet in Penske [Music] listen to say that I don't want to kill these guys not so much for mentoring laughs or so 15 laps or so number there and a bit of a different strategy six pot and you heard some of the lingo on those pit stops with the weight now drivers have the opportunity inside the car to make some adjustments winding is what we call weight jacker a toggle switch on the steering wheel they can move weight from the right - left front tire that helped a car handle better [Music] Honda teams were having such as force they were forced to make a decision like Dario Franchitti was taking a peek towards maybe coming down pit lane but no not yet yes he has try Katie has peeled off he is coming down pit lane so he is getting a little less fuel mileage than the teammate Scott Dixon Dario Franchitti has the car in the happy wood that they're not planning on any adjustments important to point out there isn't he's got a straight shot out hard to believe after that spin on pit road earlier in this race that they've not only recovered but recovered to the point that they are a true contender that last lap that Dixon took was a very difficult lap because he was to make sure he doesn't run a few me because he was in the same strategy that repeating something and he gets one more lap as he heads your way Vince Welch Scott Dixon led 73 laps a year ago and Fishman he's led 34 laps today and he has real strong they have not made a single change money in the of his pit stops him today looking for another perfect style team again no chassis adjustments about you justin wilson was having a great race and coming into the pits and locked up on him and he just eased up like actually hitting the wall they're not doing any repairs to the car as such but very frustrating you can see Justin pounding on the wheel is what was a great race now has a mistaken tough break for Justin Wilson as he comes back out onto the race track here's what the Rick was talking about you can see he goes very close to the wall and actually gets the gotten pinched against the wall with a hose you'll see that the left front tire changer definitely had some difficulty getting that wheel and he won't he ran over a hose got tired convinced all over the racetrack there don't know whose tire that came off of that is a pretty sizable chunk of rubber that's Takuma Sato as Sato is now your race leader that's right seventh different leader our 18th lead change is that the first time a Japanese driver has led Indy 500 to check the record I think you're absolutely right Eddie that was Sato's radio they don't want him to pit yet now remember sato last up was on lap number 91 so right now Takuma Sato is leading Marco Andretti by five seconds here at the Indianapolis 500 our telecast presented by godaddy.com Ryan hunter-reay trouble [Music] something broke and run here comes Marco three left shot [Music] [Music] you saw it on side by side Ryan hunter-reay he called into the team and said something has given way in the back of the racecar and he is nursing the number 28 into pit lane you also saw Marco Andretti he ended up taking a pit stop and Rubens Barrichello folks is your eighth different leader right now Kanaan is in Vince no changes in the 11 he had to come earlier today Charice new battle his way back and he each book makes his stop as well he comes back out onto the racetrack [Music] and here comes Barrichello after leading a lap at indianapolis the 40 year old who searched had his birthday just last Wednesday brings his car down pit lane so far he has done a very good job guys he got 33 laps on his last tank of fuel I find that shocking there's the 28 team going to work at the rear of the car trying to diagnose the problem but for Ryan hunter-reay it does not [Music] but he just turned the car up and ready right now we won't get a word with Micah momentarily Marty all right Thank You Jamie and there is Michael with a concerned look on his face let's go back all morning there tell us a member he said he was going along in lose something [Music] we still going straight just ready to turn into the yeah he just did my job for me thank you very much because Takuma Sato and after his pit stop has the race lead but bright in his mirrors is Dario Franchitti and not much farther back is number 9 that's Scott Dixon all right now this is where we're talking about the pressure Sato knows he's got a two-time Indianapolis 500 champion behind him he's always had this propensity to sort of push when he shouldn't and he gets him in trouble seven Labs to go and that way to go it is a long way to go but I think what Marty's point is you cannot I'm sure he's being reminded by Bobby Rahal his team owner on the radio settle into a pace do not push member we saw earlier in the race a little bit of an off run and get a little bit high you can see now Jerry riding along with Dario Franchitti is tired up machine looking forward to kuma Sato a little bit different of line here wiill down below the white line now running directly behind others happy to sit here as you mentioned many times Eddie just to sit back and save fuel a very important person right now in this duel we have sockos spotter he has to make sure he tells him where Frankie D is at the track the whole time he's going around you don't want to get a surprise past the last moment Dario has not led a lap today but he's closing in on possibly taking and changing that step and getting back to your ash answer our question about Japanese drivers leaning towards a time takagi led two laps it's easy for me to say back in 2003 Ryan hunter-reay is out of the race car and Jamie is caught up with Michael Andretti and right on a race car from getting pushed back to the garage Michael what was the problem there it looks like some in the rear upright right we're off right [Music] early on you were complaining about a vibration but was there any indication what happened there yeah I felt a different vibration coming in that time and it felt like engine engine vibration it ended up being the CV joint in the back you know with the drivetrain [Music] you trim out there a bit a minute go for it trying to save mule that's so disappointing [Music] they're going to relay that information to his teammates were on the track last year he did not qualify for the race as you mentioned started on the front row the last time that happened the kind of my right it's got good year back in 1994 and 95 we've got a step aside for a moment bets the race continues here at Indianapolis there's your top five this is a word coming away from your ABC station [Music] what a beautiful view of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this is sacred ground for motorsports racing and our helicam covers today's race brought to you by godaddy.com hi let's talk a little bit of strategy now on the top five let's go up to speed that's chicken first with ricktum rule the country of Japan's celebrating when Bobby Rahal came on the radio and told the casado congratulations you're leading the Indy 500 well that's the good news the down problem right now is that he is out front they've had to go to a fuel mixture that's burning a little more fuel to stay out front now behind him the reason they have to do that is Dario Franchitti burning a little bit less fuel as a result but hey they're so far very happy with everything and you've to heard from from Chip Ganassi he's ecstatic about the way things are going and he thinks he's on the right strategy Jamie Marco Andretti just behind him in the 26 started this race [Music] situation with the Ganassi car Marko keeps saving doing great keep it up it's been a great day for Scott Dixon he started 15th the deepest he's ever started here at Indianapolis he's led 34 laps and currently running in the top five their fuel mileage has been outstanding he can go to lap 151 grande ray Hall is right behind him in the next spot and ray Hall running fifth in fact there are four Ganassi cars in the top seven for way home running smoothly they've got two more stops to go but right now real happy with their race car Marty and quickly rounding out the top ten it's JR Hildebrand Charlie Kim Townsend Bell has poked his way into the top ten Elio Castroneves and Justin Wilson let's take a look at our Firestone leaders as it has been a bundle today a total of eight different leaders we've had twenty lead changes if you're asking about the records while the mostly changes 29 back in 1960 the most leaders twelve back in nineteen ninety-three Barco Andretti's led the most but he's playing catch-up right now to that man Takuma Sato with 64 to go at Indy you're looking at the race leader at the Indianapolis 500 140 laps completed 60 to go that is Takuma Sato from Japan no man from Japan has ever won this race couple of our armed forces in a tennis today and that the 500 s being Blanc has live to 175 countries and territories around the world seen by over 800,000 US servicemen and women and their families live through the American forces Network ladies and gentlemen we thank you for your service and our remembering all of you are in the oil Day weekend sona cycle there on Takuma Sato now in second place is Dario Franchitti 1.4 seconds back Marco Andretti has moved into the third spot but he is another three seconds back but Scott Dixon is close behind him and fourth let's get an update on Marco Jaime a little while we've been talking about crew members one of his doesn't even go over the Wahlberg Stevenson with while Martha on the radio my nose if I get there about halfway do this this you got plenty of two of it you need to protect it over now you heard the key word there vibration remember we just talked to Ryan hunter-reay his teammate who was out of the race he said he too had a different kind of vibration there's even a tie on the 26 and that's the word something because once something happens within a team you wonder if you might be next because the way that the team builds the parts to put on the car Eddie you know it could be just that the tires picked up some rubber and in turn it's actually going to go away fresh set of fire stone fire Hawks on it or he is developing the same we have with the driveshaft with the CH constant velocity joint and it's now just starting to deteriorate and it's not just the question of the teams on the left side its grammar a doll as he's making a pit stop here working lap number 144 bits issues today they're gonna put a half turn front wing and he said it's almost undriveable repeated it throughout the course of the day issues with that room so it's not just one group of cars it seems like we're seeing it recurring and we could tell you that Marco Andretti has peeled off that he is coming down pit lane Jamie you're there and keep an eye on that right rear well it's hard to gauge just how bad things are Marco is always very passionate very spirited very relieved if it's a tire or if it was something internal no Eddie I didn't see anything wrong with that Tyra certainly wasn't down to the courts when this Firestone fills a great tire here he'll get the answer there are cops but you know what to tell you junior Hildebrand Townsend Bell have made pit stops head that's Sebastien's of a dress he is slow on the warmup lane at Wow that could have been a little dicey as Marco comes around second time Marcos had a problem on the warm-up lane and the yellow has come out because Sebastian Saavedra is definitely in a bad spot and this is where your spotter better help you all right get ready because it's going to be a frenzy on pit lane because we have 55 laps to go there the Cruz boy they have got to be steaming in those fire suits stay with us we're coming back our presentation there's any by godaddy.com [Music] our fourth caution and we told you was going to get a little hectic on pit lane Takuma Sato Frankie D Dixon the top three are stopping here we go let's check in with Rick and Takuma Sato brings it in complaining a little bit of understeer they say they're putting a little bit of front wing you see it right there meanwhile you can't re open the same strategy in same lockstep no adjustment to the car just getting all the Sunoco stop for the nine cards Scott Dixon it's been a strong day for this group in the pits today there you see the service on James Hinchcliffe scar as he is finally serviced and back out [Music] other cars that are going on through will soar out now everybody shapes up as we get ready for the restart here in Indianapolis as we have a total right now of about a 12 car showed on the lead lap we're gonna go side by side when we came in it was too cool asado in front [Music] we are under our fourth caution here at the Indianapolis 500 we are almost to the 3/4 mark we've knocked down 149 of 200 laps the top three Takuma Sato and that blue and white number 15 right behind him two-time winner Dario Franchitti and right behind Dario the number nine and a winner here at Indianapolis back in 2008 that is Scott Dixon now roger penske has got to be a little bit concerned because we thought that his team was going to be a major factor today right now Ryan Briscoe is seventh Elio Castroneves is ninth and about the last 70 laps they have not been sniffing at the front [Music] marco andretti topped off on fuel we heard them talk about the fact that we're not getting as good at fuel economy as the Honda of Ganassi now let's go check in on willpower doc heat went out early here you mentioned Marty very tough night for the captive Roger Penske and his lead driver in terms of the guy leading the point standings coming into this race willpower involved in a grinding crash with Mike Conway willpower was checked out the end Center told he was physically ok than the team tells me that power was hot he's very very angry that Conway was back on the racetrack with a broken wing but to the drivers are ok Roger now focus on two cars the two had a problem last year in the pits ended up 14th this year he is shown right now in 28th position stay with us we'll go back to green flag racing here at Indianapolis [Music] you can see that is called lemon seed starter and telling everybody one lab degree give me another signature file restart and let's set it for you as we are now in what we always talk a lot of guys get to the last 50 laps and we're down to 49 to go and there is Sato Frankie Dixon that is her top flurry now Marco Andretti topped off his fuel he is back in 16th position listen to the radio [Music] and I think what he's calling Eddie is because they topped off with fuel he's now back further in the queue he needs more grip more downforce to get past the cars in front cos when you run the line cars there in front of you he's so difficult just really difficult to be able to pass the cars see the frustration right now for Marco feeding on the steering wheel he knows that this is GU be a hard run for him as we're coming out to start ever and laughs vehicles don't go to the rear until the final tornado so even though he's at 60th he's got a long way to go to get to the front here comes to cool us up leading him down round the race car behind up that's a log jam cars at one point almost got into each other Scott at this point I think all that fuel strategy stop after this last yellow goes out the window because everybody's got to stop one more time I think you're right so now it says flower petal to the floor your only decision may be whether you take tires or gamble and just do fuel and here we go change for the very sweet Dario Franchitti moving in front didn't take long didn't take long remember when he is in 28th position he had to fight his way back it's the first time he's led today and the 2-time champion once number your cup sticks [Music] goes underneath heading into turn number one target Chip Ganassi is now one two on the racetrack behind Sano it is hitch clip and is back in that fifth position would I give it that car what kept arrived and I think Hinch is on the move also because he had a great restart he make the slipstream work here right now machine each cliff who's driving the GoDaddy green car whilst his best finish was two years ago he came home at 7th fifteenth or should say 16th in last year's race this could be his best run ever in the 500 on board with James Hinchcliffe stretch going into three hopefully he might be able to time it well enough to be able to do it down the front stretch he's probably gonna get passed here and he will justin wilson because he eased off the throttle and timing is a huge issue here NE and what you really want to be careful when your the car that's being passed don't allow them to put you in the gray going in because there is no you've seen that race after race towards the end of the race somebody will make a mistake get half a foot up and you're into the wall on board with Tony Kanaan he's going over underneath hints cliff to move Kanade into fifth and hitch but going in the wrong direction and cannon is not somebody I'd want to have behind me on those last 40 laps because he's coming another guy that's had a great race today Charlie Kimball back in 8th position let's go on board for the restart with the number 83 right [Music] that was the move we saw from the aerial shot that we didn't realize was Tony Kanaan that made a really slick move there I always say Tony has partly excuse me coming through those two feet does every restart but the foot better perspective they're going a hundred and eighty miles an hour that's that's at 60 miles an hour it's settled down at least for the moment of there's the best battle we've got going as here comes it's put back underneath Tony Kanaan so sort of look like he's signaling it he said go ahead [Music] working with somebody than trying to block them because we block them at this point you could lose that draft for the cars that are ahead of you you have to leapfrog the top four are Honda's then it's Hitler fifth with a Chevrolet in two others that's what happened here he's saying the balance of the car is good last round of stops no changes he did tell me before the race the importance on this last 50 laps it's all know right now and as the guys pointed out don't have to worry about saving fuel everybody's got to make one stop so this is really put the pedal the metal 42 laps to go Dario Franchitti right in front of Scott Dixon right now I'm sure they're willing to deformed to get to the last stretch when they get that last pit stop right now Dario looking for his third what would it mean to him I remember that feeling of wanted so badly to win that first one and then the second one was you won that second and now I really want the third so and he may just get it today how about the cream of sorrows still driving a great race he is shown in third position and don't forget his team owner Bobby Ray Hall David Letterman race 2000 bunny rights and the wheel there we go pass for the wicked they're switching spots I thought back a little bit because up there by himself and when he got passed by too far that can be demoralizing but he is bringing the fight right back to the target cost he's definitely maintaining the pace he's right there with him it's a little bit further back to Justin Wilson James Hinchcliffe and Tony Kanaan that's your top six and they're the aerial view gives you a good view of the top five only forty-one more laps to go heading down the front straightaway we've had nine different leaders event we may get another lead change this will be number 25 so Frank Keeney goes back to the top spot we are closing in on the all-time record from the changes in this brand-new need at this year's Indianapolis 500 [Applause] you see the - lighting up yellow flag unfortunately Joseph Newgarden doesn't want to see it because it's his car that caused the caution he basically during the break said motor just quit and he has lost power he did not make it back so we are under our fifth caution of the day here at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and now we have 36 laps to go apparently just outside the window unless you're are willing to gamble what do you think I think it's too big of a gamble at this point but we'll see I think some teams that have more than one bullet on this lead lap will probably go in different ways but it's are not open right now let's take a look at our Firestone lap leaders because we've had nine different leaders 26 lead changes we are just three away from tying the record Marco Andretti has led the most laps although he's back in 15th place right now he led 59 most of those early in the race he's got Dixon Takuma Sato round out the top three in that category now thinking of this yellow takes a couple of laps here 30 laps per tank Eddy so you need to be at lap 170 can you save enough fuel or will you run out of a lap or two from the end let's get the strategy on the nine car how about events Michael we heard that you toss it up 170 it's or just open pits are opening and they're coming we'll catch up with Mike after the stop it looks a little bit busy yeah yeah they've got a major decision to make and once these stops are decided upon them like the 10 car is set out that they are going to come the question will be do you lean the engine back and try and stretch it to the finish or do you go or do you have one driver do one thing another do enough here but who makes that decision yeah I think I'm coming in and hoping that you can maybe catch another yellow for a lap or two well Team Penske also will have to make that decision they have two cars still in the race risk going in tenth right now all right here they all come let's go to Rick number Oh what's a googly-eye I was gonna bring the car down last year came a new fuel strategy for this team they all they're thinking they're gonna gamble with it again he comes in they're gonna make a slight wing adjustment as well they're actually just about the front and the rear wing Dario Jamie James Hinchcliffe been taking positions Marty and he ran over the hole and be up to IndyCar as to what will happen there and we will check back on that is we're gonna step aside for a break here we'll reset everything for you as we have 34 to go here at the five welcome back to Indianapolis 33 laps to go and Chip Ganassi is right where he wants to be his two drivers Dixon and Frank Keeney running one two now you know when they qualified can ask him with his Honda engines was not that quick but on carburation day they were lightning quick they were the best in yesterday working over in the garage area on all the cars they had them torn apart they were replacing it at the Ganassi garage it was nothing but quiet they were locked out and let's now for more from Richter Brule well let me put it this way it has not been full day for Dario Frank start with that didn't they had a problem with the vibration of time changing the battery instance on the track now the car [Music] it's been uneventful for Dixon at least in regards to changing the car they've not touched it all day long and the guys may be the unsung heroes if Scott Dixon should win his second Indy 500 today his pit crew they have been rock stars that last stopped seven-point-seven Brent Webb it says you know at Indianapolis even though we're moving the trophy back toward Chip Ganassi there was one thing to keep in mind about the Indianapolis Motor Speedway you could never ever give up since 1911 the world around the Speedway has changed but inside it's cruel walls the most basic truths remain the same every lap matters every turning matters from the first to make hundredths one laps one bobble one ill-timed it's the difference between immortality and irrelevance back here on the caution and guys we are gonna be coming up on 30 laps to go we already know the Honda's to go that distance earlier in the week Roger Penske said if we can lean the motor we can go as far as 32 to 35 depending on how far they lean it how'd you play this it looks like it's going to be a good old-fashioned shootout from this point that's the perfect word it is right here this is a shootout and I think it's going to be some of the most amazing 30 laps be obscene - indeed reason for the Chevrolets to lean the engine up so we do that you lose horsepower can be know that they can go 30 laps running bridge so into your boy Eddie this is put your foot on the gas and this pretty soon we'll be teammates will no longer be teammates maybe there will be among to the lab while they pitted on lap 166 and remember you get two laps for everyone under green versus whether concussion there have been a lot of things happening on pit road today and here is one where James Hinchcliffe slides over the air hose forcing him to back up and on this last round of stops Graham ray Hall had a problem guys he hit a gun oh and it was inside the box so we're waiting for word from IndyCar as to possible penalties and those rules are very clear all right pace car as you can see coming through and getting ready to make the turn into turn number four it is Dixon Franchitti Sato Justin Wilson for Charlie Kimball is in fifth Tony Kanaan six Brisco Berrocal one night Elio Castroneves rounds out to talk to we're gonna 29 [Applause] the race is really jostad world around Sato it's clip through two down the backstretch first six are nice and straight here comes hits cliff looking again under Barrichello going for the Franchini takes it I think Wilson's gonna take second now saddle right on the the 18 as well to me and he shuts him down Tony Kanaan also in that mix guys up front don't know what they're missing behind and put Cartman turn that mix also remember the race last year when he was driving for Sarah Fisher he's won here in the Indy Lights Series in the freedom 100 Judah Jannetty this is one of racing as hard as you can go but you gotta save something for those last five or three or four laps or whatever it is they give a risk here but you can't lose any track position there seems to be one car pulling into pit lane we'll get that for you as soon as we can but as this continues there goes Sato back into third he gets under Justin Wilson Wilson's gonna lose this one always lose in two more spots as Tommy cannon got around him in the 11 car there he is and also in carpenter here we go for the battle for the lead it looks like nobody wants to leave because that still may be thinking about [Music] probably out that negated like he said nobody wants to leave it's because they all feel like they're gonna be a sitting duck on the head if there is a restart we've seen how many times you can suck up in the draft and just whip around but it's very hard to interpret what they're saying they excited to be like they were not a hundred percent confident they get enough fuel to go full power I wondered about that cuz track positions so important that they fill the tank completely twenty-eight official lead changes today worn off the mark back in 1960 whose fourth right now and looking to get past Sato hurry to god of mine among the right way pack him out too early didn't time that right [Music] Vince what have you here non can ask these fuel situation Scott Dixon are both running the same fuel setting and Mike Paulo handles the strategy for Dixon just told Dixon he said Dario odds on the same strategy we've got to make four point four but he just told them that gives us a little bit of cushion to the end remember they've been targeting four point one now he needs both wait for the finish we thought they could make thirty in 170 this is going to be interesting well that they can't hit it on 166 maybe they're not getting the fuel savings under yellow that we thought of was ever told last week but but I think you can be another life change so we've got all this action going up front you've got Frank Keeney holding on to the top spot there's Dixon right there in second Sado is in third what a great new carpenter on [Music] 4.3 on the dash sorrows fuel mileage let's get an update from when the team not only thinks they can do it they're pretty confident about it but the key is he's got to stay there he can't be trying to dice it out with the two they've done amazing they giving them instructions sit there your time and then make your move don't make your move too soon although as you can see he's under attack by a carpenter way under attack he's now moved back to fourth spot edy carpenter remember this is a backup car they trashed the first one in qualifying last weekend and he has really cut the life here in the second half of this race that it's a show right now it is two Honda's that carpenters Chevy them two more Martha's with Wilson and Sato that cannot Chevy insects and on fuel maybe now in this full race setting maybe the chef you'll have something different here we go we're just tied to mark will we break new changes of new that rosie was having a bucket car [Music] he did not get that done so there is Justin Wilson in third carpenter in fourth Sandow is fifth Kanaan is shown in sexy what's been amazing about this race if you have just tuned in late now lead have been bigger than about four and a half to five seconds at any stretch during the day this is what we've had with this brand-new DW 1200 we do know for sure and that the lead car uses more fuel the to target teams and to target drivers hogging each other remember we're talking about the fuel mouse you don't know if it's going to be Honda or Chevrolet that's going to be able to make it to the end we thought both of them could when we came back to green but we're hearing from the teams right now they need to make some fuel numbers and because everything is brand new is we see solder right now having a look on the inside of carpenter and he gets that cast completed Eddie we're just gonna have to find out in the last two or three laps here are going to be a nail-biter and Wilson is Dixit you gonna go 20 laps to go you've got the power house key targets any second attic everybody gets by we could work on the race to do all tough fight for it a carpenter though he had really fought back to get back into this race he's asking the tournament back in yeah he wants to get started but you saw him release his foot off the brakes as he got close to the wall to stop the car from hitting the wall very very astute move from his part he's gonna have to come in for tires though there's there was no way we'd go back on the track after those spin I'm that's great alright let's show you what happened to ed carpenter who sees way down below line v car in your frame gets on that white line and oh I think he did just kiss the wall there and he just owned the exit very close to getting hit and boy when that's happening you got cars coming towards you all you can do is just sort of hold on close you started with that white line Scott you're and he can't look at that that you can't have a hundreds of a thousand of an inch between the car and the wall there he may or may not have I think he got away just bit was the tire maybe no we didn't test it oh he needs to go and buy a lottery ticket got a lottery ticket it's true so a tough spin but we saw this throughout the month Bryan Clauson crash during Cole weekend he watched that white line and boy it just got the car so start doing that when your car is maybe not working as well as it did before so you now start to try and cut the corner a little bit to make the car maneuver through Eddie Newt I know you know how that works he just didn't get away with him no I like like they say on the last 20 laps we throw all your caution to the wind try everything you possibly can I have no idea what his setup was but you were right he probably had a little bit of push in the car and he was trying to keep that momentum because with these smaller turbo engines if you take your foot out of the throttle it takes you a whole lap to get back up to speed again he's busy here he just wants to look to the right to see what's coming let's go on board with Tony Kanaan give you the view from his perspective [Music] is that that moment where you guys are saying Oh which way do I go [Music] or you know either made it through the accident or you happen well there he has gotten refire and we're getting word from pit road that no one is going to stop so fuel is good stay with us the shootout is still on here at Indy a word from your ABC stations is coming up [Music] we're racing again at Indianapolis starting position to take the lead you think he's a good restart now the question is can he hold off with what we've seen so far today the answer is going to be no but at least now he's in the mix oh you wait for this cheer when he comes down the front stretch here this place is gonna come alive listen right behind him is he's not gonna be alone here comes Dario the plumber this time by I'll clear on player coming into the mixes well miss Ryan Briscoe he's in third right now Dixon his horn Wilson is back in fifth and Eddie you and I talked about whether the two Target cars had the right amount of downforce to be upfront and wondering whether or not Tony had maybe just a bit too much weight you see solder to the inside the facade getting around Justin Wilson [Music] so Justin's slid back several spots he restarted third but back to the six position here comes Nixon taking a look underneath Brisco Brisco takes a defensive line second place Tony Kanaan so it's a little bit that's because cannon who slowed them up a little bit going into one now look at these guys here they're gonna stick to the fifth Lee Dixon's gonna go inside he knows he's gonna get up front and start to chase down Frankie D and you heard Briscoe had to breathe the throttle going into three as well but everybody's showing a lot discipline stay off the gray that's Justin Wilson as he goes under Takuma Sato and we have seen today in this 500 that's their ghost Tony Kanaan back for the lady must round oh what a popular win one passenger walk [Music] [Applause] the curse continues he was moving uphill to self up to [Music] [Applause] he felt like he had a racecar that could win his confidence had never been higher look at the look on Grant [Applause] we already say given the minute Marty I think he did have a race car to win today circumstances got him in the wrong place he just can't get through the journey [Applause] this race back in 1969 since then and it will not happen again today my kid cannot just like what you said well tony has made no secret about it you know he and Dario were very very close to Dan Wellman and he looks at the BorgWarner trophy and he said I want my face right next to Dan Wheldon and alongside of Dario Franchitti all right let's go back and show you what happened to Marco now we're gonna watch marquel here just in the bottom side of your screen go in through turn one and trying to make a move and as he does that we saw the same thing with Ed carpenter gets those inside wheels on the white line loses the grip he knows he's lost e he launched the wheels up and impacts the safer barrier on the right hand side just trying to drive himself too quickly mm so front because he knew it was go time Eddie that white line has caught everybody out that's been on it today it has become no-man's land that was a very hard impact especially on the side like that when you see marker is okay but he's getting up very slowly you can see it's all wrong by time he's got at the center of the turn did hit the safer barrier let's go on board with Marco this is in slow motion you know it was amazing with that slaw what did you see how he had the calmness once he got it got sideways and he corrected and they good 30 yards before he got to the wall it wasn't hard on the brakes I watch his hands ever and then once he knows he's going to hit the wall his hands will come off the wheel so he doesn't get his hands caught in the wheel when the wheel then turns around this thing all right Marco is out of the car he'll make the mandatory trip to the infield care center and right now we've got 11 laps to go our seventh caution here at Indianapolis it is going to be one heck of a shootout don't leave us for more than a decade Brazilian Tony Kanaan has been a major contender at the Indianapolis 500 he's even sat on the pole but he has never ever taken the checkered flag and he is a man who has come to this race with a mission and a favorite number it's my 11th Indy 500 11 it's my lucky number I'll put my face next to my two best friends because we'll be Dario so you guys in tell me thinking about it he would be such a popular champion but we still have nine laps to go party and as we have seen over the last few years anything can happen even on the final lap this is the Indy 500 and there you see the crowd many of them on their feet they are fit in this sweltering heat that's gone into the 90s and it is going to be one heck of a shootout next time bye we're still under caution there's eight laps to go so at best we could be going green with seven to go and the captain is deep in thought he's got a guy riding in fourth place he needs to pick up on that man right there he's got his two cars second and third they're all chasing Tony Kanaan and there you see the crowd many of them on their feet they have been in this sweltering heat that's gone into the 90s and it is going to be one heck of a shootout next time.bye we're still under caution there's eight laps to go so at best we could be going green with seven to go and the captain is deep in thought he's got a guy riding in fourth place he needs to pick up on that man right there he's got his two cars second and third they're all chasing Tony Kanaan still under our seventh caution here at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway next time.bye will have six laps remaining Tony Kanaan Dario Franchitti running first and second they are the best of friends here is what we picked up on the radio first the 11 car [Music] guys are gonna play like old times more with James Hinchcliffe and it is daughter bikini that gets out in front there's still two ongoing [Music] talked about the leader is a sitting duck nuts certainly what happened to Tony Kanaan [Music] although at some point you have to make a decision whether it's good to be in fun that was close or it's better to be second or third there's Ryan Briscoe trying to make his way around there is Kadam running in third and he is under attack kuma Sato and here's the battle for the race lead annachi cars go after each other and put the 50 up now these two guys ex-teammates for the moment when they won't be teammates that last lap it's Dixon then Frank Keating then Takuma Sato and Tony Kanaan is now back to fourth five laps remaining here at Indianapolis lifting whatsoever clicking off flaps as fast as you can go and the to target ganancia guards are trying to from the field coming down the front straightaway [Music] where do you want to be one lap do you make your move you want to be leading or do you want to be the second place going whether way they're flipping back and forth there right now he knows who's been the lead on the very last lap but I think I want to be second to turn three any [Music] running third at this point I think if the two Ganassi cars keep playing nice with each other off to the end they're guarding the position so maybe like recess been better off if you're leading that last left now he's gonna pass him again and it's a clean pass and that's he get him by the strut yes he does so it can be done he wasn't defending that time Marnie I can assure you and you can move a little bit maybe a turn three you can vote a little bit coming off of four Takuma Sato trying to get up closer now Frankie he's got a problem asana and he's and he's guarding the position now Willie try and go for the pass this time by there'll be two laps remaining [Music] seems to slide Minter I think he's gotten down straight you heard the call here comes Dario this to get your game my shadow taker market and connive is gonna make so tricky out in front Takuma Sato and second there's Dixon and then Tony Kanaan he's gone he's too far back right now I think salads at the cap our position and right you have to timer right white flag is out Dario Franchitti takes the defensive line in the water keep going keep going we talked about that we talked about his patience and for the third time in his career Dario Franchitti is gonna win the 500 at all three times it's gonna be under caution this is a race where you cannot make a mistake that was very hard for Silas [Music] that white line again he did Tony Carrillo is going to finish third remember results are not official from Indy car but here they come down the front straightaway and directivity is going to join an elite group as he is going to become a three-time you are the man we know she could count to three she just proved it that was amazing word from IndyCar officials yes it is Dario Franchitti s race and he came all the way from the back till all the way in the front and he withstood that big attacking saddle the last left from 20 the way to win the race Dario Franchitti again stamps his in the record book an open-wheel racing [Music] Takuma Sato climbing out of the car and Scott you hit the nail on the head he just needed to be a little more patient going into that corner I thought down the front stretch he was playing at right he was setting him up to come out of turn one and to go down the backstretch but just a little too eager but it's a race driver boy you were anxious you see when Frankie started to go low I thought he'll just pull up and stay there but he gets in there and he starts to force the movement into their white line and Dario style Eddy Dario stuck on the outside which was amazing cuz he's out on the gray area let's check in with Richter Burrell down here with Ashley Judd Ashley congratulations the first thing we saw was you count to three with your fingers oh my gosh three that is just such an extraordinary achievement what he did today was awesome we're gonna hear from Dario in a moment to what it means to him but I want you to tell me what you think he's gonna be thinking right now what's going through his mind what I think it means one hell of a racing driver and sir Jackie Stewart brought him up right Jim Clark is looking down on them and so as Michael Walzer and I am so proud of him and I said to him today when he got in the car I will see you in the winner's circle I knew it did you see you've gone from 25th to third on a single green flag run I don't think anybody's ever done that before legend da Franchitti wife couldn't be proud of let's talk to chip he just came in himself let's talk about how in that first pit stop you had to have doubts we were dead last Rick we were dead last at the first stop after the first stop we were 33rd 33rd after the first stop and then came back to the lead all right do not a lot of adjustments he seemed to be pretty happy with the Carl there was a minor problem vibration no minor minor things all day with the car nothing really tires and fuel congratulations the tires are going off and then they look at him and they say the tires are fine he's just so 2 din thank you all congratulations Ashley and chip won a victory it is the seventh time an owner has finished 1/2 here at the Indianapolis 500 Chip Ganassi now joins the likes of Team Penske tread red racing leader card and blue more the celebration is about to begin as Dario has made his way down pit lane and they'll make the turn into Victory Lane he does everything so gracefully doesn't you know and I think back throughout this month when the team was struggling there's a lot of people in the garage airing wondering what the old guard here at the track we're not going to be able adapt to these new cars on the aliens to a high speed all is because at that point in time we had guys like Josef Newgarden leading the timesheets many days in practice here guys a lot of people are starting to think that the older guys might not get it but experience came through the other three-time winners here at indeed Louie Mayer Wilbur Shaw Johnny Rutherford Elio Castroneves mari rose and Bobby unser you can now add the name Franchitti he makes to victory [Applause] and then she's happy [Applause] the car pulls in the celebration is about to begin he atlas [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] for the third time in his racing career Dario Franchitti slips the wreath around his neck he will take the kiss from the festival Queen and he will have an opportunity to drink the milk as presented by day 40 from the American dairy Association [Applause] and Katie wins the Indy 500 for the third time Daria we're in the white glasses as his wife Ashley comes in to give him a kiss it has been such an emotional year for not just Dario but this entire team Michael Walzer the chief strategist for Dario Franchitti or Barry Bonds or the chief strategist for Dario his son Michael passed away earlier this year and now Dario on the heels of all that has happened this year what does it mean to win the Indianapolis 500 today I just want to dedicate this to two of Indianapolis as famous Dan Wheldon and Michael Long's are thank you to all the fans for salute our buddy Dan today [Applause] that water is watering I think dduba be proud of that one just coming from the back there a lot slap running side by side with the kuhmo I went down and I moved up to give him the room and then we hit and I just kept the third and managed to keep it out of trouble but thank you to this target team my buddy Scott Dixon I was looking there at the pole now this thing's gonna win it but everybody out there was a friend at that insanity matter but he sums it up and everybody loved that in the battle that turn one was shot oh how did you decide which line to take and what to do as he pressured you from the inside kind of agree so I moved over and I saw he was coming and I was actually I come over eyes he moved so I came back over and I moved up the track and I don't know he got loose who looks like I just saw the replay he got loose underneath me but kind of reminds me of Emerson a little out there that the contact to the end and Scott harder my spots graze on their good keyboard keep going keep going pulling gears I gotta say thank you to Honda as well we had a really tough qualifying and these guys worked so hard every race that won every IndyCar race has been with Honda they work so bloody hard I'm sure everybody they could do today so thank you this is this means the world this is Indianapolis mater three times and must be able to be on their own the trophy beside an either site like that that's more important anything Dario you're an astute student of the sport of racing what does it mean to be among those that are three-time winners at Indianapolis well the last week up and study and my buddy Jr's Tony brother for his book because he gave me the other night let the love beautiful inscription in it and said he hoped to welcome it to the 3-time Club so to be in the company of guys like that just means so much and TR give me a little wave the first time I lied on the caution today he can we have a little ritual here and he came up and give me a wave so I waved back and then we went racing again but what I wanna a great race today was able to come from the back of the grid when after getting hit in pit lane and spun again I can't say no target team and the adversity they've been through and we just dedicate this to him and that feels really quite nice it's a hot day in Indianapolis nobody hotter than Chip Ganassi Racing and Dario Franchitti who gets a hug from his father as he celebrates his third victory at the Indianapolis 500-mile race what a day for Dario Franchitti early in the race getting tagged by EJ Viso nose damage all the way back to 28th position but now his face will be on that Mort Warner trophy for a third time this was the last pass attempt by Kaku Masato and there is the victory and there is the beginning of the celebration if she Scott Dixon trying to make his way to congratulate Dario Franchitti Dixon comes home in second place behind his target kanashii teammate it's a hug from chip ganassi [Music] [Applause] while the celebration continues let's show you the results from today's race as we had a total of 17 cars on the lead lap a record-setting 35 lead changes among 10 different drivers and look at some of the names James Hinchcliffe Cole I need to finish he crashed last year Justin Wilson with a great run as did Charlie Kimball 7th and 8th respectively in Townsend Bell always on the one off here and he manages to crack the top ten in Elio Castroneves comes home in tenth position as we look on that what arrived by Rubens Barrichello in his first 500 to be able to finish on their first 500 the finish of lemon I think is a phenomenal drive to this site and of course Takuma Sato will be listed in 17th place as he crashes on that final lap down in turn number one and he will be thinking just like Junior Hildebrand did last year what might have been ed carpenter managed to get back out although he was one lap down after the spin he comes home in 21st position and there are the cars that come in in the last three spots Tony Kanaan wanted it so bad for not only himself but also his friend Dan Wheldon he's with dr. Jerry punch Tony we told the pipes at home that it said earlier in the week you wanted this one with your face on the board worn or Kofi basalt Dario and your buddy Dan Wheldon emotionally how difficult what his final 15 laps I mean actually was good it felt good J because he's three best friends fighting for the win I know I mean the odds are gonna say one of us will do it and one of us will do it for him and obviously I tried everything I could to do it idiot but you know to lose this one like this it's it's an honor I think we battle it me darlin and Dixie and then he whatever he is right now I think he's extremely happy you know his three best friends on the top three it wouldn't be a better way Tony Kanaan finishing third and Tony celebration tempered by the fact he didn't win but happy because of the guys who did all right Scott Dixon still down there celebrating with his team and we'll talk to him when we come back here the Engler that was Motor Speedway on what was a record-setting day at the 500 it is the single largest one-day sporting event more and you want to know the reason why you just saw it today and spectacular races the celebration continues down in victory lane and his teammate and second-place finisher Scott Dixon's with Jamie little continues to watch Dario Franchitti one of his closest friends celebrate in victory lane you guys put on a heck of a show today in your opinion where was this race last for you definitely guttered you know it's so close and we definitely declare you I think a huge credit to team Target they did a hell of a job getting these cars and Honda back up to speed and making sure we had the reliability the power and the fuel mileage was key today too soon you know I think I wasn't really expecting Sardo to dive in there on there with two to go had to give him room because he's you know he's pretty aggressive all day and didn't money in my race there but I thought we were in a pretty good position to be honest towards the end to get a run on both of them one down the backstraight one up the front to finish the race but you know who's gonna be close there for a minute with Soto Dario they touched to Dario for saving her there was a pretty big hit but he did that hell of a job today he came from a big mistake girly with visa I think he didn't gotten to him so you know just super happy for the moment super gutted you know it's it's tough when you spend all this time out here and you try to get so close to an end it gets ripped away but you know the team did a hell of a job congratulations to target you know 50th year anniversary happy birthday to them and you couldn't do it a better way with the ones who finished with botargo cars Scott Dixon certainly been on both sides of this but it's great day for them it'll be a big celebration tonight Marty nine cars did not finish the race and it says a lot we were worried about who could the engines go the distance we got an answer boy did we get an answer we're coming back there is a very special moment Dan Wheldon's wife Suzie Wheldon with a huge hug for Dario Franchitti who was one of Dan's best friends and his memory puts on those white frame sunglasses as so many of the farmer and they're worried today they were introduced and in for joined by many of the fans here at the Indianapolis 500 Brian Briscoe you had the pole wound up in fifth and he with Jerry party Jerry thank you Brian you know restarting in four spot with less than six to go how confident were you that you had a car that can handle the good assets and still have the power down the street so I think we were hurting with the heat a little bit today for horsepower but you know I was I was gonna give it a go you know I was gonna do my best and you never know if it seeks to go anything can happen and there was still another accident so um I was feeling good the car we've been working on it all day long we were getting a little bit loose down here in one but really proud of my team today I thought everyone involved Hitachi they gave me a good race car today and when we raced hard there's no doubt we raced hug well done thank you ryan briscoe comes home in fifth spot right well you know Jerry Sato for a time appeared to be headed toward the winner's circle and uh that would have made him the first Japanese champion ever here in 5500 he's with Rick this rule right down Rick standing by with the coup Masada just outside of the Medical Center water race you were in it to the end let's talk about that last lap in the move yeah well I always go for the win of course and good restart from seventh to jump up to the fifth overtaking fourth second and then they lost what guitar from Dario and you know it's a good opportunity turn one into the inside and but it looks like he didn't get give me enough room to go there I was well below the white line and just got about slide so I'm very disappointed I mean completely outstanding job from the team incredible weekend was it was it a chance you shouldn't have taken should you wait until later in the lap not on things like is a it was a very last lap and I was already in you know wasn't like diving in the the breaking you know I was a well in and just he did move up so I kept on pushing and the entry from that speed in an entry I mean I had nowhere to go so it's a little disappointed very disappointed Takuma Sato out of the race and buttock spectacular run and in the end Dario Franchitti and I ask you is there any more get racecar drivers in the world the derry-o he always looks good always seems to say the right thing has a smile is popular with the fans he'll stop and give the media an interview you couldn't ask for a better champion that dario franchitti the lead for next year's race will it be Elio or Dario when he number four we will find out come next Bay [Music] it's a tradition it's a history that make it what it is I think if you asked everyone we would win One race what would it be and they'd all say the same do 500 ladies and gentlemen welcome to the greatest spectacle in racing [Music] humans a win in India means so much more because it well and truly is racing immortality unsure how the drugs that are won multiple championships would have kind of feelings back for an Indianapolis 500 once you win this race your life has changed forever Indianapolis stays with you forever Frankie's gonna win the fun [Music] [Applause]
