so as I was writing my script for the Shark Tale review it got me thinking if you pretend that this movie never existed then 2004 was a pretty good year for animated movies including two of the best animated movies of all time in my humble opinion however what I called this year the greatest in film animation history just based off of a couple of good movies alone that night now that could be done for basically any year in the 2000s Oh 2002 had spirited away and lilo and Stitch best year ever wowee Zowee wall-e and Kung Fu Panda that settles it 2008 wins all my good golly gosh this year at Happy Feet happy B we don't even need to look at any other movies of 2006 guys Happy Feet punches it it's a movie about a dancing penguin from the guy who directed Mad Max fury road no I'm not joking look at us so every year pretty much has at least two good animated movies one of them is usually from Disney or Pixar and the others from a smaller studio like like Oh Studio Ghibli sometimes DreamWorks makes a good movie sometimes Disney and Pixar both make a good movie in the same year though that doesn't happen very often and on rare occasions Wes Anderson pops out of his little burrow to deliver what is easily the best animated movie of the year prove me wrong wreck-it ralph to prove me wrong if I had to pick a single year where all the stars aligned that we got not only five great animated movies but a lot of major milestones for the animation industry as a whole and the number of amazing creators finally stepping into the realm of animation it's 2009 there is no that's not to say 2009 didn't have its fair share of stinkers like monsters vs. aliens Ice Age 3 dawn of the dinosaurs and happily ever after to Snow White another bite and TV animation wasn't doing too hot either this was the year Cartoon Network dict around with live-action garbage and other networks gave us shows like Glen Martin DDS fanboy and Chum Chum and The Cleveland Show my name we're not talking about TV so let's ignore all that 2009 only gave us great animated movies with a multitude of different tones with different animation styles from a number of different studios but this marked the first year that some incredibly talented people finally got their feet wet directing an animated film let's start with the king of symmetry himself Wes Anderson directing an adaptation of a Roald Dahl classic and putting your own signature stamp on it while also staying true to the original book is not an easy feat in the slightest fantastic mr. Fox is in a word fantastic I just saw it yesterday and I want to rewatch it again it's just dude Western just simple these are so good you guys I don't even know what to say I'd say this one is even better than this year's Isle of Dogs so I just go watch this movie what are you doing with your life if you haven't seen it it's so good what's the master escape plan follow me again meanwhile you got Phil Lord and Chris Miller did I get their names right yes awesome this is another Musker Clements deal these guys made their animation debut with Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs which is a very underrated and underappreciated film this contact Lee is represent you I won't touch on this too much but let's just say it was a success and they thankfully moved away from Sony to direct the lego movie which as you know is one of the best animated movies of the decade and certainly better than every single movie Pixar has made this decade it was literally the dumbest thing I've ever heard I disagree Coraline marked the long-awaited return of Henry Selick to the director's chair of an animated movie you may have heard of this movie he directed is called Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas thanks for that anyway after making these two classics and a horrible horrible flop that nobody remembers to the point where I didn't even know it existed until writing the script Henry Selick returned with this horrifying yet magical delight of a movie complete with excellent stop-motion animation and this guy who looks like a really tired waluigi it's beautiful and then there's this big bosoms lady who's a mermaid and this dude is rats and the cat is Keith David and I love it it's so creative probably better than Nightmare Before Christmas do at me on that one too this was the first movie from Lika which has become a tour de force in the realm of stop-motion animation in recent years every movie they've made so far has gotten an Oscar nomination how does it feel good dinosaur how does it feel and they're pretty beloved among fans of animation so 2009 jump-started some animation legends but what about these guys well this year's Disney and Pixar offerings well not their best work are in many ways some of the most important films either company has ever made let's start with Disney I ragtime princess in the frog a little bit in an earlier video for not really having a coherent flowing or memorable story and I don't know why does the first black princess have to be stuck in a frog's body for the majority of the movie but this was still a momentous film for Disney because after years of uncertainty that the hand-drawn style would ever return Disney finally gave us the traditional 2d animated fairy tale we've been longing for since pretty much beauty in the Beast it was magical the characters are great there's a couple good songs and overall seeing the style of animation again was unreal this is someone in the best disney films but it definitely deserves a watch especially since it's one of their lesser known films and then we have up I'm not the biggest fan of this one and I call it a mid tier Pixar film still great just not mind-blowing I feel like people way too often conflate the first 10 minutes of this movie as being a representative of the movie as a whole with that said wow those first 10 minutes are as good as everyone says they aren't this was unprecedented for Pixar telling a mature heartwarming love story with no words just an amazing score and amazing animation and yeah let's talk about the score this may actually be the best score to an animated film I've ever heard Michael Giacchino hits this one out of the park and even won an Oscar for it most Pixar films are nominated for Best Original Score but this one gave them their first well-deserved win and speaking of Oscars getting up was the first animated film since Beauty and the Beast to be nominated for Best Picture this was mostly because the Academy expanded the playing field from five to ten nominees that year if they had done this sooner I guarantee that Finding Nemo The Incredibles ratatouille and wall-e all would have been up for Best Picture but nonetheless ups accomplishment was not unwarranted this movie had an artistic gut-punching opening that developed into one of Pixar's most whimsical stories it was certainly one of the best films of 2009 I'm not quite the best animated film released that year so yeah a year with five great movies sorry I haven't seen the Secret of Kells but I'm sure it's great too and the ton of milestones phil lord chris miller and Wes Anderson's first foray into the realm of animated films henry SELEX long-awaited return and the birth of leica disney's last hurrah for traditional animation and a wonderful fairy tale musical and Pixar's gorgeous love story / whimsical adventure / Shatterer of the animated film Oscar glass ceiling Best Picture guys still want to use that excuse that animation is just for kids because this is the most prestigious award in cinema and they nominated an animated film for it I wish I was invested in the animation industry enough to see all these films when they first came out and instead in 2009 I only saw up monsters vs. aliens Ice Age 3 and happily and now I'm just kidding I never saw that garbage thank God but now that I'm invested in great animation something seems increasingly harder to come by these days I'm certainly happy that these movies exist because they change the realm of film animation as we know it good job 2009 I'm glad we remember you for these movies and not avatar yep avatar existed you're welcome [Music] [Music]
