coming-out party for the Houston Oilers I'm Tim Donovan along with Reggie record we should have a beauty here for you this afternoon the owners are out to show everybody including the Cleveland Browns that they are for real they're doing a lot of funny things offensively and the guy in the middle of all that foam engineering is Warren Moon warren moon is having an amazing season he is playing with confidence now everybody knows that he's been a fine passer but the thing that he is doing this year is running with the football and doing it well he has to gain breaking wide receivers in drew Hill and Ernest givins but the man that I think that's bringing it all together for the Houston Oilers offense is running back Mike Rozier on the Cleveland Browns had a battle-tested time and parolee this division now the last two years in a row and a short career has never lost a game to the owners his floor wins and no losses but [Music] [Applause] that's because the Houston holders bike took blitz on almost every down now cosa isn't the very mobile quarterback he has difficulty getting away from the Blitz added to that the fact that the Houston corner backs cover very tightly they don't give you any place to throw the football Marty Schottenheimer gathering the troops around very emotional coach loves the special teams loves the kicking game and right now he's talking things over for season there you see the success Reggie he has really turned them around a great deal he's brought them back in a couple of years have won two AFC Central Division championships in a row over on the other side Jerry Glanville is really in the position that Barney was in when he took over under the Cleveland Browns he's trying to tell this team and this city and the Central Division that his team is for real they can win today he's got a big opportunity this is essentially a game for power in the Central Division of the AFC Jerry Glanville would like to be where Marty Schottenheimer is the Cleveland Browns are the big boys on the block Houston Oilers think that they've grown up now it's a late arriving crowd right now but they have sold the Astrodome out and they have sold standing rooms only seats and of course this is going to be a big loud place here this afternoon they're late arriving because they forgot how to get here I think this may be the first sellout and weeks maybe year they had a great crowd I guess when they played the Bears last year but really the last time they played here in the Astrodome they had a crowd of just under 30,000 for that game the orders are set to receive the kick of Jeff Jagger this kickoff is being sponsored by Budweiser biers he's a rookie Jeff Jagger and he set to tee it up and kick it away Curtis Duncan a rookie at the port western also Chris Rocco's kick returns are a matter of timing you cannot afford to muff a kick because if you do all of the blocking schemes ahead of the runner will collapse and the coverage people will be down on you and we won't be able to return the ball very effectively there you see Grayson and Hawkins coming in maybe special teams hit here's the honors offense moon gets it going Rozier comes off a 99-yard performance the blocking fullback ray Wallace and all of that talent and wide receiver the tight end his range in a real strong big offensive line here are the Oilers right now starting right then Johnson and Johnson inside and Clay Matthews having a tremendous season too and the secondary is a good one the two best corners in NFL and Allyson Felix right at the center second down and 10 him on short yardage as Rozier tried to get to the outside corner that's a key formation for the Houston Oilers the red gun offenses formation they want to get into the door to passing formation as you just saw they will run the football Rozier makes most of his big yardage when they are and spread the defense across the field and they look for those natural running winning holding up in their of the Houston Oilers he says Ernest givins is just an emotional player he has matured a lot and we have told him play football and do the talking after they're up underneath Center mean is not into one of this league's great players only in his second year Fred Wyatt the official pushing for roughing the passer number 59 run coverage we want to get your wide receiver in motion so he does not sit someone else should have been out there I think and the Houston offense they have what's called option running ability and the receivers read on the run and they run their patterns based on what they see the defense do sometimes when you have that kind of philosophy the quarterback can see something differently than the receiver does let's take a look at that roughing penalty once again on that points if they can give up just three points in this situation they will feel that they've won a psychological victory here Jerry Glanville going over everything defensively now with Toby Caston who becomes a big big part of this game now with brimsley going out the rookie out of LSU was in there at a linebacker spot now they have two rookie linebackers in there and Al Smith and cashton in both her over with Jerry Glanville and he was making sure that they knew their assignments and I think if I'm Jerry Glanville here I cannot sit back and allow Kosar to watch look over my defense I've got to pressure him I've got it blitzing I've got to pressure him right now and take my chances that way the problems bring in a throwing lineup and by that I mean they bring in Brennan they bring in Clarence weathers and they have Langhorne in there on third down and goal and put the ball down at the Houston three yard line the injured player on the kickoff return for Houston John Davis has an injured ankle it wasn't a knee and injured ankle the Cleveland will look for number 86 Brian Brennan that's the man they like to go to down here third and goal from the 3 that's Brennan in motion here it goes Cozart looping it and it's over the head of Brennan he's looking for a flag there isn't one and they'll have to settle for three great defensive stand by the Houston Oilers Brian Brennan usually is the man that Bernie Kosar will go to and third down possession kinds of situations there it is a pick play again on the right side of your screen the Houston corner backs cover just marvelously cosa really doesn't have a lot of angle to get the football in and he throws the ball over the head of Brennan ball spotted at the 11 yard line make it a 21-yard attempt for Jeff Yeager lead over Houston by a count of nine to nothing but the one thing that Cleveland does do there is they get back the point that they missed on the extra point fiasco and at the same time they're going to make Houston score twice in some fashion to gain the lead as we check the owners huddling up now trying to straighten themselves out a little bit that has to be a shock to hear when you get the Division the Cleveland Browns wanted and it was in a game similar to this back then a game a winner-take-all game the game for all the money the Cleveland Browns won that football game and spent seven years ago Jim as you said since they've had that kind of game on the line well there's other standings 1980 they were neck-and-neck and it's deja vu Jagger with the kickoff for the grounds the six comes over the 20 in the browns pinna man Grayson is in on the tackle and Colette young comes down there makes the tackle too and Duncan is down on the field along with another Houston oiler player two players down the second player appears to be Kitty Johnson so Duncan and Johnson Johnson a safety who also returns punts for them he's down on the carpet ear these are two key players in the Euler's scheme of things of course Duncan is that fourth wide receiver he also returns kickoffs and Kenny Johnson is a veteran defensive back who catches punts and it's a very important job because the Houston Oilers do not have a lot of people that can catch the pun and this Kurt is Duncan coming straight back up the middle he lowers his head right there and just don't see what happens to that's that's it's Patrick live that's my day Johnson [Applause] areas fall into the turf and he gets rolled up on just a little bit it's like his legs are involved in well there goes Duncan he's football team is because they had the maturity and they had the confidence in themselves to come back from something like this Warren Moon has had some bad first quarters on the other hand in the improved in his second year because the one thing that he does well is he runs excellent patterns he makes the catch but this is what he is getting a trademark for running after he catches the football look at a good moves good vision coming back inside wide receivers not only must be past catches they must be open field runners he caught a big touchdown a finish last week against Buffalo of over 50 yards closer and slaughter recognized the bills blitz and beating this is mac here the owner 45 yard line as the Browns are doing it both ways now drawing in running mixing it up nicely Bernie Kosar is a high percentage passer he is the kind of passer that will hit receivers all over the football field if you expect to be in the football game versus the Cleveland Browns you must do something to him you must obtain the quarterback position the pocket so far the Houston team is not getting into that pocket not collapsing it you can't have success against the Browns don't make not that fast you see him down here he's almost lulling the defense and the sleek or the thinking that he isn't doing anything then suddenly that bursts of speed but the one player you think about when you think of Byner with all the things that he does is James Brooks at Cincinnati Brooks is faster but they both do a lot of different things for their football team here goes miners hawai down been battered and bruised he's been much maligned and it doesn't take a whole lot for these fans to get on him here but I think that they will give him a little more time to get things going but when he gets back in again I think he's gonna have to make something happen Reggie this defense has been out on the field this Houston defense a long long time here in the first half there goes Doug Smith off imagine three of the five Cleveland drives has started in Houston territory at the nine at the 26 at the 43 that's been due to two things - that's been due to two turnovers and also for special teams coverage they have allowed Jerome MacNeil to have two fine punt returns to put Cleveland an outstanding field position sometimes when you try to defend against a guy like McNally think too much back there doing what you do best who ends up doing what he does best burning her it is third down insolent 15 [Applause] he's been going to slaughter on the blitzes he'll go to the run this time and ball good coverage once you have reached that contending status you don't want to see a ball game like this anymore because if you see a game like this it's telling you something hey we may not be as good as I think we are well we've got some weaknesses somewhere with spoilers I think maybe it's more of one of experience they're just not experienced at playing at a big game right action play again
