it was a long night at the Coliseum just 13 days ago as the Los Angeles waiter defense overwhelmed quarterback Dan Fouts in the charger offense the Raiders sack bouts 5 times in the first half San Diego is never in the game with Marcus Allen busting into the end zone three times the Raiders roll to a seventh straight win over San Diego 34 to 21 today they're ready to meet again they're ready to meet in beautiful San Diego California where Jack Murphy Stadium is sold out for this 50 second renewal of a longtime matchup dating back to the old American Football League good afternoon everyone Don quickie with Bob Trumpy and overcast rather cool day in San Diego it's gonna be interesting to see which Raider in which charge your team shows up Trump a week ago they were in different forms that Monday night meeting the Chargers blew out Denver their best performance in recent years really and the Raiders were embarrassed at Seattle Don I was very impressed with the charges performance last week against the Denver Broncos they did it running the ball as an example an old college play a play that that Don Coryell used to use in junior college a pitch by Buford McGee to Gary Anderson the option and Anderson scores his fifth touchdown in four games as a San Diego charger as they just embarrassed the Denver Broncos and as good as their performance was the Los Angeles Raiders against the Seattle Seahawks in the kingdom that's a place they don't like to play had the ball bounced against them this pass from Craig off the facemask of Mike AIDS into the hands of Darrel DP Turner and 33 to 3 was the final score they didn't play well at all well the Raiders have beaten the charge here seven straight times in LA's favorite again today Howie Long the all-pro defensive end said maybe the Chargers better bring guns if they plan to beat us today they may need them they got to protect vows to win well josh has had a lot of offense geared up they look good last week it might be a real good one here at San Diego brought to you by the Marines today celebrating 210 proud years of history by cannon so advanced cannon is the world's leader in 35-millimeter photography and by BMW the ultimate driving machine to arrange a thorough test drive simply foliar BMW dealer the lights are on but there's no threat of rain as coach Tom Flores and his Raiders have come down to San Diego the 52nd meeting over the years between these two teams Don Coryell his spirits greatly picked up by that showing last week but this is the big one now the Chargers kick it off the ball hit well downfield by mischenko Walker watches it go out for the touchback and so the Raiders will go on offense first and ten mark.wilson at quarterback he is five and one as a starter since Jim Plunkett was hurt Wilson's quarterbacking numbers not that good but he has been a winner and of course he has the superb Marcus Allen in his backfield with Todd Christians in the leading AFC receiver at tight end the speed is Hester Duane Thanks offensive line the San Diego defensive could come up litsen over the slightly immobile mark.wilson still with a bit of a bad ankle Kenda and Marcus Allen break stick Crafton takes the ball of the 28 yard line defensively the San Diego Chargers are fairly young that gets some new people in position Ray Williams and Earl Wilson the defensive ends Wilson a first-year player from Kentucky Gary Nelson's a started inside linebacker from Mike Green Billy Ray Smith is the leading tackler for the Chargers and a couple of rookies in the San Diego secondary in John Henry and Jeffrey Daly think Dale is going to stand down last year second in mine looks like the farther as Nelson linebacker from Nebraska threw him back interesting replacement dairy Nelson playing Mike Greene hurt last time these two teams met Mike Greene had 11 unassisted tackles the leading tackler that particular ballgame for the San Diego Chargers Billy Ray Smith with 13 they were very busy two weeks ago in Los Angeles it was really an overmatch the charger lines could not contend with their Raider counterparts offensive line neutrons first down play Polly Williams the US Football League makes the step from the defensive end Don one thing I'll guarantee the Raiders will continue to give the ball to Marcus Allen in seven games against the Chargers number 32 is gourd 14 touchdowns three two weeks ago San Diego defense has command on the recent weeks in the first four games they had only seven sacks since Davidoff has taken over the defensive coordinator they have 17 sacks to the chargers in the last and Wilson will probably the now on second down and 12 Congrats and he just closed it away San Diego [Applause] Furguson we're putting there mark.wilson now that was an interesting choice by the Los Angeles Raiders the last time these two teams met the Los Angeles Raiders tied in Todd Kristensen just ate him up over a hundred through 30 yards and receptions and I noticed that time they at least held him up with the line of scrimmage you can see as you mentioned on the improvement in the defense over the last five games they hope it goes through the sixth - seven-game win a big success run here at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium thirteen four and one other Raiders since it opened Christensen uncovered Don Wilson takes a look on 3rd and 12 he gets it away downfield Christensen has the part of the 47 yard line that's indeed uncovered that's an 18-yard gain in a first down that is absolutely a big mistake in the design of the defense a player like Todd Christensen with his speed with his ability to read defenses there's no one in front of it if they just hold him up for a split second at the line of scrimmage you see they're running a total zone there they got to have somebody in his face or he'll kill you all day long they had a big rush on Wilson almost gabon but as you saw he did release the ball and so Todd Christensen leading receiver in the AFC gets a big third down catch for 18 yards to the the scoreless game [Applause] 37 yard line of San Diego then King was coming on up let's they picked him up duh but they're putting pressure on Wilson every way they can the scoreboard is coming in with some finals now from the east and this the 10th Sunday of play the Chicago Bears extend their season record to a perfect 10 and oo bidding Detroit Seattle starting to come on again now in the AFC West an easy winner after they defeated st. Louis for its first win of the season [Applause] to beat Minnesota at Minneapolis second and 10 Marcus Allen looks for sin Roman guy coming up together was the middle guard Chuck Ian and Billy Ray Smith the inside linebacker 78 and 54 so the Baba's advance just across midfield third down now arises for the Raiders third in about seven and they love to go to Christensen here drama yeah and San Diego must cover him when they come in with a five and six defensive back set they got to have somebody on his nose just to destroy the timing of the pattern Christensen [Applause] so starting up now and the play was so that before too much time that'll make a third down in 12 that's the call there and the game to find the offense came with ducky waves in the backfield they're trying to run motion but pressure released somebody finds single coverage on one of their wide receivers they had moppet pester Doki Williams all three of the game at once that cash in our rep breakout Flores said after that debacle at Seattle of 33 to three loss he wasn't even sure what charging coaches with points right now though it's 12 for the traitors Nelson gets time poorly thrown Bubba Toki Williams - Martin gets it at the 40 it's up first down for the Raiders nice good wobbly past but Doki Williams from UCLA dives toward it's a 14-yard gain on third and 12 and again the Raiders hit on a third down hill Byrd the man in coverage Raiders just flooded the near side of the field they had three receivers will Loki Williams in motion ran a good hop pattern you're right this ball not particularly well thrown by Mark Wilson but Williams certainly goes after it whatever it takes Mark Wilson comes in complaining just 47 for five touchdowns he's been intercepted nighttime but he's done well native of San Diego that's inside the 30s down to the 28 yard line for yet another Raider first down one of the problems you have playing defense against the Los Angeles Raiders is at great team speed the ability of Marcus Allen not only to run the ball but also gets to ball in this particular play Billy Ray Smith tied to Marcus Allen he reads is it going to be run no it's passed and then all of a sudden they throw it to the guy they fake it to Marcus Allen made Billy Ray Smith look back there [Applause] Raiders driver first down our football he's down to the 25 yard line and pickup of four on first down knocked down on the play made by Billy Ray Smith and John Hindi the Cincinnati Bengals are coming on now as they go to five and five when the Browns lose their fourth straight game Pittsburgh in Cincinatti tied for the AFC Central e both with five and five records the Patriots broke open a game with Indianapolis in one their hot glocks seven and three greater saphenous Cora's game of and down at six [Music] in the end zone is Jessie Hester but the ball is intercepted others came up and he's got the ball it is an interception and the charger stop the Raider with 852 to play in the first quarter the Chargers get them all [Applause] from behind the offense get a complete look at this play this first drive has been impressive this is the 13th player the drive Robinson right in the face of mark.wilson ball should not have been thrown an excellent job of coverage and a great catch by Walters this is exactly the way the Raiders played last week in Seattle drove it all the way up and down the field then turned it over inside the 20 they've been going at Danny while there's a lot this year dropping he's made a lot of plays like that his 32 steps and he's been beat but somehow he seems to recover alive yet on the scoreboard and the judges gets up to go and here's Gary Anderson a sensational play the Raiders cut him down after a gain of only two yards the Chargers get 76 percent of their offense throwing the ball with bouncing quarterback Anderson and Tim Spencer first-year players in the NFL both stands outs in the US Football League West Chandler is having a tremendous year at times wide receiver for San Diego Lachey a bookie from Ohio State the number one bad choice of the Chargers [Music] swings it out what a football player he's out forty-seven you see the plot byline 24 yawns Anderson who scored 49 touchdowns and three US Football League seasons they say damn faustus's awestruck and practiced by the stuff they can do now is doing it in-game well one of the things the San Diego Chargers like to do is get their best people on the field it's a great move from from from inside you'll see an outstanding block and Anderson is slick sixteen Marci against last Sunday so free ball looks like the Chargers gathered at the 45 yard line [Music] along the Kellan Alzado we're told the Chargers might be trying to run a lot of Lyle Alzado then kelp melon the rookie Mackenzie and leading tackler rock Martin back the line for Los Angeles Hayes and Haynes if the corner Hayes is going to see a lot of balls Stacy Turan starts for injured man that's free safety in football man fans watch the pitch here keep to themselves second down eleven he gets in a cross midfield and down to the 47 yard line of LA the Giants came from behind to beat the LA Rams the Giants with the victory knocked the Rams record to eight and to Buffalo on its second game with a shutout they're starting to play defense under defensive specialist their new head coach Hank : while James is now in the Chargers backfield where in the first quarter Don pretty with it's sold out San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium interception in the end zone by Wilson little crane James once he gets ahead to the 40-yard line see the mismatched Vinci McKenzie the inside linebacker miss Martin right in his fence little train Jameses even though it lines up in the backfield he's considered a wide receiver by the San Diego Chargers done superb little player an engineering student from Auburn he blocked it Auburn for Bo Jackson one year five six one hundred and sixty pounds but he thinks big and plays big in a fat sticks and look deep mans up the Train James comes down with the ball of the [Applause] the charges move on as this games been like a track meet when San Diego is on it's like a symphony March it up and down the field like there's nobody on the other side of the ball that time he had Mike Davis 36 in coverage on James out of the backfield and that's a mismatch strong safeties aren't used to covering little quick guys like that from seven Queen points down to tie the first intent now for the challengers fat's play fake and get some more time to hold the ball at the 13 yard line garrison here the light hopelessly beaten and fats would like to get a chance to do that over you know they're going to be calling it again I think the Los Angeles Raiders are very worried about that three back offense figured at that's they're going to run it a lot and out of the out of the backfield that receivers open all over the place that's that's a tough cut that's just one of those things that you can't blame the quarterback and you can't blame the receiver bounced three of four to this point all passes to running backs it was into the game 36,000 years passing for his career of any active quarterback there's a Pitts little train James is inside the 20 mile James takes the ball down later 17-yard line we're the strong safety Mike Davis knocked him down but now the charges have mounted a threat they're in field goal range almost gets lost the needed five six and a half 160 pounds II you can't see be part of my dream back feel little train James and William Perry wha-ho weighs exactly half would Harry wait [Applause] look at this formation token catch it here's fats and third place time this time and there is the bomb as you see comes in hi one of the first times I've seen Killer wisdom really show effects of that knee surgery he landed on his right leg tried to jump it really couldn't ball slightly overthrown by Dan Fouts two years ago I think he gets that best let's watch maybe I'm too critical here she doesn't jump much at all he's down very gently on his legs still coming back to that's very serious knee injury now Bob Thomas is in the game the former Chicago Bear their all-time leading scorer cutting the preseason he's been hitting the closing field goals for San Diego this one is spot he's why he is so the charger is like the Raiders the field but get nothing la has it when we come back the big-money rollers will be in the appleís next Saturday on NBC Sports right now at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium on an overcast day with the lights on but really no threat of rain of the at the bar for a second time done tricky with bat Tuffy there's no both teams drove on their opening possessions but could not get points and all of a sudden the Chargers hand it right back [Applause] two weeks ago very sure handed gifted receiver what's to me like Ellen takes his eye think Wilson gets it in the right spot Williams there to pick it up first and ten at the radar 16 for the Chargers laterz had horrendous show last week five turnover [Applause] full house backfield down here's the handoff keeping himself and he fix inside of the 15 and down to the 10-yard line he gained six before Reggie McKenzie ran enough Buford McGee was a high school option quarterback so was Lionel James a trailer on the play field position was in the first game a big detriment to the San Diego Chargers and a big asset to the Los Angeles Raiders so far today it's turned around absolutely turned around in this game is starting exactly the way the game was played last week when the Raiders were in the Kingdome second down and four Dan Fouts with time but nobody to third [Music] and he puts it up and it's cut all the touchdown which channel with us faint in one hand and so the charges are on the bull absolutely brilliant Tilly's tendon injury [Applause] the key point what you said was these two teams met five sacks in the first half three in the first quarter Wes Chandler did not practice all week maybe should never practice again where the ketchup that was something in the end zone six times this season has West Taylor Ben [Applause] fortieth reception and the Chargers lead the favor graders seventh a nothing with Raiders with a tough one again next week as they go against the Bengals who won big today Don Coryell the Chargers coach said if you don't get out in front of this Raider team early it turns into a pass rush drill and the San Diego Chargers get out early I was pretty obvious two weeks ago so far two turnovers both for the Los Angeles Raiders this is very very reminiscent of last week's performance against the end mischenko with a line drive kick off it squibs into the end zone and out and the Raiders will again have to go from their 20-yard line first and ten well they misfired last time Marcus Allen the charges subsequently after a touchdown throw bounce to West Chandler has good luck in the catches we've seen all year and he can make the good-looking catch - I still harken back to the 1982 season for West Chandler in eight games the guy goes over a thousand yards and he's not really measured up to those fact those figures since and he's personally right back to Marcus Aaron he breaks tackles and look at Marcus Allen an open field across the 40 and finally there but he crosses midfield of the 49 yard line 31 yard gain so they went right back to the money he dropped the bag the last time at this time Marcus Allen who comes up limping breaks at 31 yarder Jeff Dale on to tackle this play is not designed to pick up 24 yards it's a PowerSuite to Micky Marvin pullin Allen just has the ability to wait in the hole and then accelerate away from the tacklers Los Angeles Raiders didn't like that on the bench first down and ten for the Raiders play fakin [Applause] [Music] this time he had to as he slides into the 41 yard line of San Diego had a good gain on the play a first down carry about eight yards the game clocks down to 350 to play in the first quarter good coverage doe by the San Diego Chargers Mark Wilson had no one to throw it to and Raiders as you said don't like their quarterbacks running the football he's banged up all over the place they don't want to make it worse til weeks ago as we remember vividly Todd Christensen had one of his best game [Applause] game against San Diego differently now Marcus Allen can't hold the ball at the 40 on second down in for this time the striped shirt helped take Christiansen out but also watch at the outset of the play he gets at least bumped by the outside linebacker now that will destroy some of the timing linden king and then an assist the 78 that Christiansen is not open umpires a tough place to be he's the guide stands in behind the linebackers looking right at the quarterback they get caught up in the washalot that's an illegal Chuck [Applause] [Music] stop the opening ride when it looked like the Raiders we're gonna go into the end zone that's Wilson running for his life mark.wilson playing with a partially separated shoulder took a hard lick Williams and Earl Wilson keyed in on him and also coming up was Wayne Davis a rookie defensive back Wilson very slow getting up at the sideline Raiders players over there to help out their quarterback as best they can he had Tim moppet he could have thrown it to him maybe at the top of the screen will be able to pick him out I think Mark Wilson was worried we got hit by Davis Wilson's wandering was gonna answer the phone there those wards Reagan [Applause] the way the ball is batted out of bounds though it's a first down carry and fumble for the LA Raiders if the ball was advanced where it went out of bounds down to the 38 yard line of San Diego [Applause] remember pitching back Marcus let's assert he's cut down after a gain of 3 yards on the play Billy Ray Smith and Gilbert knocked him down Marcus Allen comes in as the focal point to see the over 800 yards rushing he also came into the game with 36 receptions over 9 yards a catch and he scored eight of the Raiders 20 touchdowns this season Marcus Allen is it and he loves to play in San Diego came to prominence here as a high school quarterback an all-state quarterback at a Lincoln high school before he went to Southern California second down down 700 trail seven nothing in the first quarter defense called a timeout break in the action we pause for this word three the extra point was good and the Raiders had a 21 to 20 Vic and then Trump they changed the rules it's called the banner sack rule you can't the guy who fumbles it it's the only one who can recover it second down seven for Wilson and the Raiders he's got time he's got a man Jessie Hester's in the end zone touchdown Los Angeles 35-yard scoring play as Hester the rookie number one draft choice and Florida State turned down the deep heat and broke it into the end zone and we're going to have a tie game of Chris Park and hit the extra point Hester second touchdown he also Peter rookie John Hindi so far the Chargers have not been able to put any pressure on mark.wilson and Esther runs an outstanding manner for their waiting for that guy to bust loose over the years that Raiders and the charges have been the highest-scoring teams in the American Conference will they play each other this the highest-scoring series seven seven hour depending on chrismyers conversion attempt and so with pre-op free to play in the first quarter it's a seven seven game watch once again the time that Mark Wilson has to throw only rushed three people he stands back there and waits and Hester without standing speed must have absolutely turned Hindi around wasn't even close six point second touchdown of the year the young rookie out of Florida State a Raider axiom speed kills and they love fast people Shula says it's the fastest team in pro football the LA Raiders John handy will agree with you right now yeah Henry was five yards back in watching that like the rest of us Cincinnati now moves up to a five and five record with a defeat of Cleveland today Pittsburgh tied with the Bengals for first place a winner over Kansas City the Giants beat the Rams 2419 LA was an early leader in that game and Chicago goes to a perfect ten and all with another win today over Detroit at Soldier Field Seattle starting to move now up to six and four in the AFC West with an easy win at New Orleans Tampa Bay lady contender for bo Jackson gets its first win of the year New England upped its record today to 7 and 3 with an easy win over Indianapolis Green Bay was down 17 to 6 in that game and came back to beat the Minnesota Vikings second game of the out of the Oilers Donna noticed it Gary Anderson and little Train James back there to receive this kickoff these guys are both lightening in a bottle trained James at the goaline Anderson the black man has got lots of moves and he takes on the big guys and gets across to the 24 yard line betray jukin of the raiders and so the Chargers come out with the game tied 7-7 and 253 to play in the first quarter partial score in the Cowboys leading the Redskins three nothing at RFK in Washington that game in the second quarter so far the Chargers ten plays seven passes just three rushes and they got that triple back set charges use 22 different offensive combinations and in the flat beggar with a play yes certainly he did the other thing that San Diego is doing is that inlining James up in the backfield he's going to draw a linebacker coverage on that particular player was Jeff Barnes gain was good for about nine yards on the play so it'll be second down and one you get the feeling is going to be a lot of points in this game maybe a lasted back in yeah seven seven right now 247 to play in the first quarter love this Felix in Diego Anderson and a traitor stuff sir are those linebackers come awakened Howie Long led the charge with rod Martin right behind him they're trying to run it Lyle Alzado one of the things you got to do with how he long ago from the backside is trying to get him on the ground he's untouched here with his great foot speed he's there just as the Anderson breaks into the line of scrimmage and assists on the tackle actually lost yards now the rate of Defense shifts people the chess game continues as the charges come out even people in Title II feel the way to attack the way they playing it is inside enough to go through kicks back goes to Anderson he accelerates ahead on a third down and three play he's short of the first down so the charges didn't get there after getting nine on the first down but the charges are trying to do is the defense is dictating to the judges what they're doing offensively that time the Raiders bring it all up there they're passing set so George's run the ball thinking that with five or six defensive backs you had a chance to break it up in there the football game mischenko the rookie from Michigan State ready to hit the ball he's had a good rookie season he had a bad game against the Raiders [Music] mashenka hips cabal hi it's inside the 20 bit Walker we'll bring it back things out across to the 33-yard line at los angeles a 48-yard my mishchenko a 14-yard returned by Fulton Walker and the Raiders go on offense again having scored their last possession to tie the game at 770 Gary Nelson who was starting at inside linebacker replacing Mike Green tackle on that play Raiders have moved the ball moved the ball very well both times they've had it one resulted in a touchdown wanting a turnover after moving the ball the AFC West has been a tough place to play for the San Diego Chargers last season they were 7 and 1 outside the division but in Division the Chargers were Owen 8 this year they're doing better they've won two of three in the division Vader's opening up with good field position as the day is gone for there the salmon always finds away in Marcus Allen hemmed in what's on that stutter step move finally moves out to the 38 yard line he gets 5 maybe 6 where they spotted a ball well you talk about fear Lyndon King made the tackle but Marcus Allen breaks out of the pile comes back to this side of the field and he's squared up with Lyndon King Lien's got some moves King able to make the tackle Marcus Allen came into the game with over 1100 yards offense on rushing and receiving he gets the ball as a runner more than twice as much as all the other [Music] [Applause] eight times the season everybody else took it five he's it for the running what's in this sack back to the 31-yard the big cat who picked up the [Music] nine sacks this year now probably one of the least played for the Los Angeles Express in the US Football League from the right side of the screen he gets around Henry Lawrence her big guys got great foot speed and as you said his ninth sack of the 85 season so the ball is positioned now back at the 30-yard line it'll be third down and 12 watch Christensen here done that got a cover him [Applause] Christenson setting himself out to the right side has seen flex at five years [Applause] Kaster caught the touchdown pass to the top your screen and right now we have a timeout with the game in the tie at 7-7 [Music] another side of Howie long there's where you know him best wearing number 75 for the Los Angeles Raiders we're tied here at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium 7-7 this is Ralph ponerse Kia the outstanding place kicker for the Chargers injured at the moment but has to be pleased so far Rob police this game is close the Raiders have the bomb ready to go third down and 12 [Applause] Wilson gets an open track this might be a career run for Mark Wilson a tall angular young man from Brigham Young finit body but along a heart and he is a competitor many times this season I think Mark Wilson has proven to his teammates that this kid really wants to win and will do anything he possibly can he's come back from serious injury and played in the second half of a game when nobody thought he'd even get off the table his kid wants to win and he's going to do anything he possibly can to help today 17-yard rocker mark.wilson once broke one 420 earlier now first down mark Wilson takes a deep drop and gets that pass poorly thrown [Applause] now let's go to Bob Costas an NFL 85 Bob Don the Eagles let the Falcons 17 nothing entering the fourth the Falcons scored 17 points to force overtime and then this a 99 yard pass from Ron Jaworski to Mike quick he splits the defenders and waves goodbye 23 17 in OT for the Eagles waves goodbye on 2nd and 10 Marcus Allen takes the kitchen gets nothing at all in the 46-yard line the Raiders great play by Lyndon King block twice got up and makes the tackle he's having a good year Lyndon King an eight year veteran from Colorado State numbers rushing yardage by the San Diego Chargers once again unnerving to Don Coryell two weeks ago and it played the Raiders charges could muster just 50 yards rushing and twelve to go for the first down for the rain the game is tied seven-seven 13:32 against San Diego Wilson all day long is intercepted again now this one is picked up who takes it back to the 42 yard line - listen sir mark.wilson this season has gone for six touchdown eleven interception [Applause] this ball is clearly overthrown I believe Tim muffin is the intended receiver 80 I think was ducky Williams but it was right in the hands of Carlos Bradley for the San Diego Chargers Hill in business we'll be back right after this [Applause] today's game is brought to you by Ford and your local Ford dealer have you driven a Ford lately by Budweiser beechwood aged for that crisp clean taste this Bud's for you and by Apple computer makers of the McIntosh and Apple 2 families of personal computers chargers ready to go now first and ten after a second interception of flea-flicker Raiders haven't covered though great job by the Raiders Wow they throw the ball away does Dan Fouts they look cool yeah there was only one receiver out that was Gary Andersen and nobody was even close so nice they dropped right into his own as soon as they flicked it back three of Raiders three of four Raider drives resulted in turnovers the other a touchdown what go right now the San Diego Chargers have to be very conservative and make sure they drive the ball down the field try to get it on now they've got second intent in the Raiders pass-rush will be a common here's the option play again yell from McGee pitches back to Anderson laughs but it sure looked good as they get the boat out of the 37-yard line of Los Angeles Ron Martin made the jackal you forced it this is something that the charges want to do a great deal it's the at times it's applied when there's Turan right there Newport McGee's done this before he flicks that sucker back there like he's been doing it all his life well tell you what the only problem with that offense is that you do tend to put it on the ground but yes the Chargers are very smart in that they it looks like the pitch he fits mince cannolis go run out of bounds I score down in five they drop out stands Amy gets it away he takes it inside the 20 to the 17-yard line a nineteen-year game first to look like bats was going to be hit before egad then it looked like Winslow was not going to be able to get to it he's hurt too was the man in covers I think that's his knees he's not been able to practice last the last couple of weeks because of the soreness in that beam rod Martin almost picks this off there's a safety blitz 36 right there Mike Davis God still able to get watch Martin how in the world that he missed that and then at the very end of the play mr. Hayes and [Applause] this be alright though threw his shoe in that plateaus a 19-yard game for San Diego and its first down intent for the charges the game is tied 7-7 second quarter 11:47 a planet pitch back anderson turning up fields inside the 15 yard line [Applause] bill pick tell the nose tackle knocked him down Kellen Winslow nataly's okay he had a bad week for the San Diego Chargers was upset that last week against Denver he did not catch a pass yeah they're looking at his neck not certainly encouraging if that makes any sense more i watch this Gary Anderson the more he looks like number 32 of the Los Angeles Raiders straight up slashing runner end up goes to Buford McGee and he holds on takes it down to the 11 yard line only got a yard on the play though well you are against Kasich and hit like the Raiders and move like the Raiders live in dangerous they'll run in options no question about that one thing about it though is that their quarterbacks their safeties are Davis Turan he's a great tackler so what they're trying to do is get those guys out there have quarterbacks [Applause] fences Pella Winslet's in the game markers good that might be a free play it's down there Charlie Joyner who's to the goal line he gets a first down and go ten yard gain you see what he did that was unbelievable how Chuck did that the game's all-time leading receiver in running his pattern jumped over Jesse bend rose to continue the pattern illegal procedure San Diego that's that's too bad that was a brilliant job by Charlie Joyner from behind the offense not much pressure on bouts you see the pilot Charlie Joyner just jumped over the number 18 on the offense spill third down he's the guy that catches it he's the guy in motion he makes very few mistakes have former teammate of yours trumpet Cincinnati very fine accountant if you need some tax work done Charlie Joyner tell you one thing about Charlie Joyner the best work habits of any professional athlete I have ever seen in my life from first day to last day [Music] [Applause] leading receiver National Football League history Tyler Joyner the end zone little train can't get the ball might be a flagger is not hovering out and play but he sure didn't look like he was looking back at the ball I agree with you [Applause] I think a lot of times teams nowadays are trying to draw interference at the end line there's contact but the officials rule that it's incidental contact and therefore no interference and this is another missed opportunity for San Diego twice now [Applause] second attempt today trained James he was bumped out in the end zone Thomas 234 he's missed some 35 he's got this one though and the Chargers break the tie with 1012 to play in the first half they take a 10 to 7 Lee [Applause] niklas Watson Zeller and Palmer as a foursome it'll draw a gallery you can be within every step of the way as NBC Sports brings you the high money skins game Saturday November 30th and Sunday December 1st so then we played just 50 miles north to San Diego at Murrieta California dick downfield a foot Walker and he'll not bring it out so the Raiders from their 21st down in ten failing in the game ten to seven [Applause] remember the field position the last time these two teams met it was worse for the Chargers in Los Angeles than the Raiders have had today in San Diego does that make sense Big Thunder I get the gist big turnaround that's what I'm trying to tell you really has been on the other game the last game thirteen days ago the Chargers were pinned [Music] therefore Marcus Allen Dodger defense and improved Latin aggressive hitting Lee Williams a force at left end man who has a fumble recovery in a sack so far today and also that hit on Marcus Allen 9:45 to play in the first half Chargers lead the favored Raiders 10 to 7 C Mark Wilson reading his wrists there they're signaling the plays in and he's referring to the little thing on his left wrist [Applause] his inventory [Applause] he chats up welcome swinging up to Marcus Allen he's a first down he crossed the 30 where he had a go Lyndon King brought him down a bit but the Raiders get a first down geez does anybody else touch the ball Todd Christians when I caught one pass it seems like it's all Marcus Allen out of the backfield this time just a little hook pass six three all he is is in a class by himself San Diego next to Houston has the most rookies of any team the National Football League 12 on the charger roster really qualifies pro experience coming out of the u.s. you start to reel he's in their secondary again Alan [Applause] see his left wrist there time yeah that's not his locker key nor is it his money he's got the entire list he looks to the sideline someone will signal into him let's just watch this let's see if it refers to it here's the wrist the entire offense on his wrist remember the Baltimore Colt running back Tom Manning who did that I'm sure we got ahold of that from the radio at the CIA couldn't decipher it this is correct but it certainly answer [Applause] coming 10th up the gun at San Diego on a second down carry so it's going to be third down and long yes they're gonna use him and continue using him all day long charges continue to leave the game ten to seven Chargers have not beaten the Raiders in their last seven tries haven't beaten them since 81 and this telecast is presented by authority the National Football League it is intended for the private use of our audience any rebroadcast for the use of this telecast [Applause] the National Football League [Applause] dan looks like eight with added on of 32 tattoos late 10:7 second quarter we'll send with four people running deep patterns go sideline to doki williams he's got a first down for Los Angeles well done by the Raiders ten yards in a first down Wayne Davis on the coverage you always have to respect okie Williams speed Wilson has good protection this time as the Chargers come with a four-man front eat rifles and out there nice pickup by the Los Angeles Raiders first down San Diego offensively has led the National Football League six of the last seven years in total offense the problem has been on the defensive side unable to stop teams like the Raiders [Applause] ladies happen is about two interceptions of stop Raider drives the first was the Ravens get the ball at their 40-yard line Marcus Allen lugs din and gallon second down and 12 I wonder if he tapes ankles before the games - scoreboard changing on some of the late starts the Jets send the Dolphins at the Orange Bowl scoreless into the second quarter now Dallas continues to lead Washington in the second quarter at Washington three to nothing those two teams might lead the ligand people who don't like each other I was just noticing the signals from the sidelines by the Los Angeles Raiders or in an attempt to save time because of the the short amount of time between plays nowadays in the NFL second down and 12 for the Raiders [Applause] they trail by three in the second quarter Wilson smartly alludes the Russian men not the salmon [Music] [Applause] five seconds for station identification this is the NBC television network Casey SCTV San Diego Don Coryell the head man of the Chargers in his eighth year as the coach of the San Diego Chargers exercised over something that happened there this is Don crickey with Bob Trumpy get sold out San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium away 50 second time to 1960 and again American football days third and 12 Marcus Allen looks too [Applause] like trained inside linebacker number one choice out of Arkansas [Applause] I understand the Los Angeles Raiders attempt to get the ball to Marcus Ellen as many times as they possibly can but this is bordering on the absurd Wilson can't find anybody else to talk to but Marcus Ellen and Wilson doesn't give it to anybody else but Marcus Allen and a charger down on the field looks like a lineman that's a big guy down there 93 is down Earl Wilson the rookie defensive end from Kentucky so the clock is stopped with 643 to play in the first half and the Chargers ready to take a first rated punt of the day lead the game San Diego 10 Los Angeles 7 next Sunday the Raiders go back to Los Angeles at the Coliseum they'll hook up with Cincinnati your old team trumpet started to move now their 5 and 5 they share the lead in the AFC Central they've got one of the best looking quarterbacks around and Boomer Esiason too right he doesn't get a lot of press San Diego Chargers on the other hand go right back and play the Denver Broncos not a very good schedule here in the month of November for the charges Raiders and then they play Denver here and then Raiders and then they play denver there [Applause] right now sharing the lead in the AFC West with the Raiders starting this day Denver goes to mount night against the 49ers they came in six and three the Broncos are six and three the Raiders six and three is Wilson appears to be alright flexing his left arm there a little bit Don Coryell is twelve years a head coach in the National Football League has had five divisional winners two at st. Louis and yet AFC Western champions here in San Diego and 79 in San Diego at 84% wins but San Diego State the master of the passing game downfield that's going to be out of bounds by Ray guy there's also two penalty markers down at the line of scrimmage with six 21 to play in the first half on you mentioned all the positives for Don Coryell he's only had three losing seasons as a head coach and the last two offsides defense coaching the San Diego Chargers has upset a lot of people here in San Diego and there's some question as to whether or not he'll return well the owner mr. Spanos Caitlin vote of confidence this week one of the best like people in pro football and the way this defense is taught tell you one thing won't hurt his cause if he beats the Raiders today number 21 hundred events still fourth down I agree with you first numbers are up at the Orange Bowl this day on the Jets on a field goal by Pat Leahy have taken a three nothing lead on the favor dolphins Jetts a tough group although you'd never have thought it up opening day when they were blasted at the Coliseum 31 to nothing by the Raiders today where a guy hits it downfield good spiral drive little train James that's been a hallmark of reh guys punting particularly late in his career you don't get to return his clumsy angles them so well so a 32 yard punt with well-placed challengers haven't we come back and we'll be joining Bhavana mod an axe at halftime NFL 85 and a feature on a young man not so young anymore Trump who was aptly named Joe Don Looney never has a person been better named for his personality when to the Giants one time le chemin told me one plays he said if you wanna send messages call Western Union was cut the same day Joe Don Looney he'll be a featured halftime as Fox has problems gets the ball away and it's an incomplete pass he did well to do that now let's go back to NFL 85 years Bob Costas Bob well the question what half refrigerator Perry raw here are the Jets with Gastineau moving in motion with Joe Klecko out of the backfield and Freeman McNeal carries and nobody takes care of anybody on the blocks and McNeal is swarmed under by the Dolphins so much for trickery [Applause] now the stack backfield they go to the first back throw and Spencer breaks it man he would have gone 12-yard gain as it was for the Chargers and there ahead for first town villain and Mike Davis once again feel position in pick games against division opponents always so very very important at missed field goal that's a missed opportunity [Music] now the Chargers have the ball as the day becomes more overcast the arc lights are on here at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium San Diego leads the game 10 7 pretty with puffy as Gary Andersen breaks the first layer after 40 to the 41-yard line with linebacker from Tennessee Reggie McKenzie knocked him down get him the ball more lakyn play last week against Denver 22 Harmon opted as he does great acceleration has a good vision for the field which is a also a characteristic I think that is probably made Marcus Allen such a great running back out of Arkansas Gary Anderson he wanted to be sure he played pro football he signed with both leagues yes I took a while to decipher do some lawyers get well on that anas 9 second down and three got only back to the line of scrimmage maybe a yard ahead so it'll bring up third down in about two as Mike Davis came up from strong safety there are so many ways you can use a player like Gary Andersen and I would think the Charger's man you see Dan Fouts talking to himself repeating the signals in from the sidelines the charger sidelines back to Gary Andersen eventually they'd like to feature him in their offense exactly Marcus Allen is used by the Raiders - now for the Chargers they lead the game 10 to 7 little train teams have got a first down and more they run charlie Joyner emotion into the formation and back out of the formation and he serves as a pick James comes out of the backfield just a timing pass in the flat you see Barnes 56 out there to make the tackle but it's a first down the interesting matchups to is rookie Jim Lachey on how a long that's a dosey doe there Bouchet the number one draft choice out of Ohio State to be a superior and offensive linemen about himself today with Locke [Applause] and it was laundry set the whole thing up he had a clean shout out to released about quickly going to Anderson Brad Van Pelt five times a Pro Bowler with the Giants comes up with a bone runs it back 20 yards so the Raiders get it back in they get in good position Road service absolutely what the doctor ordered right off the menu for the Los Angeles Raiders went through the hands of Gary Anderson and Brad Van Pelt right place at the right time right right into space look at this boom yes sir I'll take it the winners event 30 plays Allen has been [Applause] had an interception here last beat the Chargers Raiders have won seven straight over San Diego Marcus Allen filling was Gary Nelson who made the knockdown now the scoring from the Orange Bowl in Miami the Dolphins have put up a touchdown and they now lead the Jets seven to three dan Marino to mark duper was a 60-yard scoring pass [Applause] the Dolphins take a seven-to-three lead here at San Diego we have 257 to play in the first half with the ball ten to seven Christenson has the ball second catch of the day for time Christiansen this one good for twenty four the yards he catches the big one to recall the last was a third and eight team play where he got one Gilbert on the reception once again no contact at the line of scrimmage allows Christiansen a pre-release 24 with a little embedded goes up for it uses that big body to keep Gilbert away from the football first and go stop Christiansen was a number one priority the charge of Defense have not done at least in two big plays in Marcus Allen takes it down close to the goal line at man thinks endzone eight touchdowns already this season Gilbert knocked him down as the clock is down to two minutes we pause for this for then would act with the Raiders challenging and when you do National Football League Commissioner Pete Rozelle will be baths guests next Sunday on NFL 85 and a live audience will be in the studio in New York to join them as with two minutes to play now the Raiders set up looking to come from behind and go ahead I'm used to sing about the rocket man that's what Marcus Hana looks like goes over the top now he goes in motion they give the ball to Frank Hawkins and he goes in so the Raiders look like a trap block there because they blasted it excellent job by Moe's bar Hannah Jordan Davis did an outstanding job watch the right side of the picture that's Davis and hermos bar gets a good block we'll put a nice big bow in that San Diego charger defensive line Hawkins doesn't have to work too hard to get it in the endzone so Frank Hawkins goes in and the Raiders take the lead for the first time in the game they were tied 7-7 then down ten seven and now they lead it 13 to 7 with Chris power out for a second extra point try of the day mark.wilson the holder 157 to plan the first half thirteen to ten 14 to 10 [Applause] corner the difference we'll be back right after this [Applause] today is the two hundred and tenth anniversary of the United States Marine Corps and every member president passed a happy birthday watch the block in this extra point on from the middle Billy Ray Smith middle linebacker is able to make penetration which that body stretched out that's a big platter [Music] billy-ray got it and so it's a 13-2 10-game the Raiders in the lead for the first time Miami has come from he had in a long touchdown passed by Dan Marino to lead the Jets in the second quarter seven to three Lionel James a yard deep and here he comes family Locker down as little train slides to a halt at the 17 yard line but I might go ahead at the distance if there's a hold and there is the illegal use of the hands are blocking the back and this is what happened to San Diego in Los Angeles two weeks ago bad field position here so all we have a moment let's go back to NFL 85 Don a moment ago at the Orange Bowl it was three nothing Jets but one of Dan Marino's favorite targets is back here's Dick Enberg [Applause] mark duper just coming off the injury list today he'd been out of the broken leg about eight weeks whose hadn't been slowed by that injury right now its first intent for the charges they trail 1310 Lionel James gets out to the 14 yard line watch this now the San Diego Chargers have spent an awful lot of this week in the two-minute offense preparing for this game against the Raiders then fats and second down and five swings it out to Kellen Winslow he's hit hard and knocked but he got the first down remove my canes hit him pains us down I think that's a neck injury he hit killing wins though squirrely probably stung his shoulders and Winslow does a good job just dancing up the sideline tippy-toeing up the sideline for a first down players talk about injuries Trump they call a stinger yes the stinger is when when you compress your neck it's like getting your the funny bone hitting your arm it just didn't every part of you and it's like somebody just put a torch in the back of your neck butts this time has a lot of time to throw looks all over the place finally violence finds Winslow running a crossing better now watch the hit by Hanes in the back of Kellen Winslow it's not really his neck but he does go down kind of in a heap the winds though they're tippy-toeing gets the first down my canes up now largely mics alright then at Kauai you see on the side line 26 a standout safety for the Raiders who's not playing at least so far today he's injured Galen Winslow gets the ball out to the 19 yard line for a first down just 1:29 left to play in the first half plenty of time for this off and it's done they can make it happen fast [Applause] [Music] trained James this time he hits for the out of bounds line gets there that's the clock with 1:21 to play first half Raiders are in the lead 13 to 10 two-minute offense you try to get your receivers and running backs to the sideline you don't struggle for inches you try to save seconds that play took five seconds to pick up five yards and Fouts will call a couple of plays in case the ball goes down the middle they'll assemble at the line of scrimmage and keep it going that's on second and long floor gets it up feel that slapped down fans looking for a car Kellen Winslow starts to mix it out mouses right in the middle of that he saw something he didn't like Jack West Chandler absolutely Florida many right in the chest you play fifty-two times though like this if one thing about the Raiders basters strong emotion whatever they play that crowd really get into this game Davis a good job in coverage on Joyner is a heck of a shot then Ron Martin just kind of bumps him with his knee on the facemask this is the stuff that this is the stuff that the Raiders reputation is beta [Applause] here's Fats live-action long-ball going for it and getting his West chiller he's down at the 45 yard line eight seconds to play but challengers hit a long 30 yard gainer [Applause] but with 68 ticks left in the first half [Applause] 20 of time graters run a game well picked up by the offensive line ball underthrown it appears intentionally West Chandler comes back and gets it first down pick up at a time for the San Diego chart practice in the gym this week is so far paid off doubts gets him down so it's at the 45-yard line the Raiders are in the lead 13 to 10 talking trouble about halftime NFL and joke down Luna you'll be featured in it I was down in New Orleans one time when Lou negan straightened out for the most part had a pet pit bull that got loose and ripped up his neighbor's chicken coop big dog Adkins of the Saints now Hall of Famer said wouldn't you know it Looney straightens out the dog goes there and all the scores highlights also of NFL 85 [Music] the Chargers are trailing 13 to 10 in the first half of 30 our Gators hit this first down Baxter markets are down incomplete Atma 30 and the marker comes in in the secondary against Lester Hayes there's no secret I don't mind the Chargers said we'd like to throw it in crucial situations at Leicester hate reason being one we think we can beat him too we'll also get the pass interference penalty against him and say he's good for two of those a game with like receptions [Applause] see the smile on lifters in Lester's face Lester's usually got a smile he's kind of an upbeat guy holding on jewelers Jay he's got Howie long I don't blame him for holding him points here any points here for the San Diego Chargers would be a real key in this football game because they get the ball to begin the second half truck the the one area of the charge of passing game with the Raiders have not defensed has been the redoubtable little little train Jay as well six catches in this first half and out of the backfield in this situation I think that Raiders will give James those receptions speed comes out the right flank on us [Applause] that's goes to limit rain and gets out of bounds at the 43 yard line with 59 seconds to play in the first half and the Raiders in the lead 13 to 10 Don Coryell the coach of the Chargers said this week he told his players if we win this game it's going to be right in the final 30 seconds you're gonna have to fight that long in that hard to beat the Raiders and that's why they paid so much attention to the two-minute drill notice the Chargers put their four best athletes skill position athletes in the game second down and seven for the Chargers 42 yard line of the Raiders Jeff intercepted Rob Martin got the Boas here for play goes the snap of the ball [Applause] excellent you notice everybody swings but when how long gets in there all the swinging stops [Applause] retain possession who's that directed was in silver and black brought that with him [Applause] just builds a reputation that time he had Tremaine Johnson in coverage when the advantages at time an offense has against bump-and-run is to put your best receiver as the flanker so he's got at least his yard or two [Applause] ridiculous second down [Applause] he's gather first down as he's inside the 35 yard line on the Chargers quickly signal it timeout no no they know they're going right into scrimmage thoughts we'll have called to place in the huddle now they called stop the clock with 38 seconds left in it so we're going to measure Daniken's we got the markers charges won't argue with that the matchup I think in this situation bottom of the screen 89 from the Chargers 37 from the Raiders Chandler and Hayes that's one that I think we'd be very smart to watch not a first down either so now Don Coryell has got a tough choice at least he's got one though and still has 38 seconds left in the first half well Cory I wanted to go for the first down bout says get out of here we're going down the field [Applause] while James along set back [Applause] the kitchen now he's got a little train [Applause] liner infield the clock has stopped down with 24 seconds to play in the first half timeout Chargers actually I've done an excellent job remember this drive started at their own 8 yard line just inside the two-minute warning 24 seconds left they're down at the Raider 31 or 32 so many weapons available for Dan Fouts in the situation's hard to cover the wall well we were talking earlier Trump about the Raider coaches saying that the charges will align it with 22 different offensive combinations of people and their PlayBook is as thick as the LA yellow page yeah they run all those different formations done and then have motion off each one Dan Fouts in his 13th year came into the NFL in the 1973 draft the same draft that brought in people like Bert Jones and Ron Jaworski Joe Ferguson Gary huff they were all drafted ahead of Dan Fouts right the book you'll probably be the all-time passing leader 36 thousand yards career already he's like a virtuoso out there when it's going his way there is nobody that can get it down the field better than he as the 73 draft whose end up Gary Keithley how to get in there seven is out there watching somewhere in a while you ever heard of him get it yeah yeah yeah you're one up on me there first round and he was there for a cup of coffee first intent charges 24 seconds to plan the first half that some Zen as he visits an incomplete forward pass Rados came huntin for the quarterback and almost got it that was a safety blitz Mike Davis in there to hit the arm of Dan Fouts he's the one one of the problems you have in this situations you have so many running past patterns that a safety blitz is a very chancy defense but when you can get to the Wookiees he's probably lobbying for a blitz right there brings up second down 20 with bat Trumpy at San Diego [Applause] fifteen [Applause] in eight seconds no timeouts left for San Diego for seconds there's the snap Bob throws it out of bounds with a second left wait [Applause] supposed to stop on the ball down the 10 - very smart way [Applause] if the Chargers have this week on the June [Applause] but one check left on the clock that's good illustration of how many times he's been there before [Music] his team set got the stamp and gotten away stopping the clock with one second Thomas missed once and he missed his killer Thomas misses another chip shot and so the first comes to an end the Raiders take a 13 to 10 lead at halftime [Applause] [Music] they've got to be happy with that [Applause] so we go to halftime and was expected to be a very close game and it surely is that as the LA Raiders after two mints field goes by Bob Thomas Cole to a three point halftime lead I tell you what when you play the Los Angeles Raiders you can't reduce opportunities like the Chargers did twice in his first half but also the Chargers played a good game last time they met 13 days ago at half time it was over at the half and the charges are very much in this one it might go down to the gun they're in it they're playing very well but those missed field goals hurt your team offensively because they get the ball to begin the second out that was an important Drive those three points missed will hurt a lot time activities coming up [Music] we'll be back after these messages from your local station tough truck events for the Chargers at the close of the first half Bob Thomas with what appeared to be a sure shot field goal but it turned out not to be for a second time in this game watch his left foot the left foot is the 1 foot that will determine where that ball goes I think you could see done in that particular instance his left foot is plant foot opened up and therefore you hooked it now let's go to NFL 85 here's Bob Costas hi again everybody Bob Costas back at our studios in New York along with Pete axe Tom Ahmad Rashad is at the Orange Bowl in Miami where the Dolphins lead the Jets seven to three at halftime today on the Marino touchdown pass to the reactivated mark duper it covered 60 yards here is an interesting note last year duper and clayton caught 26 touchdown passes between them from Marino now partly because of the Dolphins troubles and in duper's case because of his injury the two have caught just three Marino touchdown passes this year that partly explains why the Dolphins are battling for their lives today they're already two games back of the Jets in the AFC East as they lead 73 at halftime at the Orange Bowl Dallas and Washington at RFK Rafael cept the Jana 40-yard field goal in the first quarter and that's it they've come to halftime the score three to nothing the Raiders and the Chargers 1310 in favor of the Raiders at halftime in that one the Raiders are six and three they'd like to get a half game jump on Denver in the AFC West Denver plays at home tomorrow night against San Francisco Fouts to West Chandler had been doubtful with a heel injury for a touchdown early for San Diego Mark Wilson 35 yards to the rookie Jessi Hester for one of the Raider touchdowns they missed the point after following their second TD and that could become a factor in the game as the Raider lead is three instead of four Cincinnati and Cleveland today and for the fourth consecutive time the Bengals have won the battle of Ohio 27 to 10 was the final score in that one and the Browns go to four and six the Bengals go to five and five Pittsburgh wins at Kansas City 36 28 and the Chiefs after a very promising start have now locked could have led to a Rams score instead the Rams lose for the second time this year and the Giants go to seven and three and if Washington should beat Dallas today then the Giants would be alone in first place in the NFC East the Bears won again today 24 three is the final score in that ballgame so Chicago goes to 10 and OH refrigerator Perry didn't catch one or run with one today although he did record a sack from his defensive tackle spot Walter Payton for the fifth consecutive week and Matsui each over a hundred yards rushing in the game for the Bears Seattle defeats New Orleans 27 to 3 it was just 7 3 after 3 quarters then the Seahawks exploded in the war win 27 to 3 Tampa Bay is a winner today over st. Louis sixteen nothing after an Owen nine start Tampa Bay as predicted on the pregame show by Pete axe thumb finally records a victory New England is won five in a row and they stay right behind the Jets in the AFC East 34:15 a win over Indianapolis big play Irving fryer 77 yard punt return for a TD Green Bay rallies and defeats Minnesota 27:17 the score their Buffalo wins their second of the year and snaps Houston's winning streak at 320 to nothing the score in the rain at Buffalo and Philadelphia on a 99 yard pass from Ron Jaworski to Mike quick in overtime beats Atlanta 23 17 after almost blowing a 17 nothing lead and we close with a tragic note from the National Hockey League Kelly Lindbergh the goalie for the Philadelphia Flyers who won the Vezina Trophy a year ago as the Flyers went to the finals against Edmonton was involved in an automobile accident early this morning and right now doctors say he is essentially brain-dead and is being kept alive by a respirator his family and some of his teammates are now conducting a bedside vigil they will not decide until tomorrow at the earliest whether or not that life-support equipment will be disconnected NFL 85 halftime activities will continue after this from your local stations [Music] mahp Thomas at halftime at San Diego he's missed two first half field goals normally a short shot from in close not the case today for the Chicago Bears all-time leading scorer who came here after you it's Wade by the Bears last summer Trotter you looked at those place kicks you kick some yourself past in your career what went wrong no I haven't but I've hung around the kickers that can speak English this is a clear example of a mistake made by a kicker for you young kickers out here it's very easy to see why it's not the swing of its leg it's a good snap by McKnight a good placement by mishchenko look at his left foot that's where the problem is when that foot opens up that controls the the plane of the swing like in golf he hooks it to the left his second missed field goal this after a drive that started at San Diego's 9 yard line Don they worked on the two-minute drill the entire week all they're looking for is that opportunity and it's missed by Bob Thomas well they talked about putting the excitement back in the extra point he's putting it back into the shore shaft field goal has missed two today the Mouton barrister he's an attorney in the offseason might be thinking about that pursuit as right now the Rangers are ready to kick it off Chris bar has the vaulty top problems of the San Diego Chargers obviously missed opportunities but just 48 yards rushing that's not good enough the turnovers three for Los Angeles one for the Chargers and the Raiders lead 13 to 10 back deep now to return the kickoff Gary Anderson and Lionel James for the San Diego Chargers as a 13 to 10 and opening the third quarter of play Chargers have not beaten the Raiders since 81 seven straight wins does Los Angeles have over the San Diego Chargers having beaten the Raiders since they've been in LA we pointed out the Chargers have head drops against the Raiders here at San Diego over the years big ones Raiders have won thirteen times lost forint tied one here at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium which opened in 1967 barb plants the kickoff fire wine [Applause] James he's a forest flannel James is out to the 33 yard line where Jeff Barnes a big linebacker finally knocked him down so the Chargers come out in relatively good field position with Fouts at quarterback Lachey and clappers guards ed white and McKnight Harris tackles ed white and McKnight of the guards in da Mesa who didn't practice all week he'll be down over the ball at center Walski an outright tackle for a platformer kawalsky standing in right tackle trying to keep the radar up a damn fast to the rod and Anderson gets the ball our producer David Neal informs us that Clapham now has been ruled out for the day with a hamstring injury last week Trump they went a load of times to Gary Anderson getting the ball up field all day long he gained 116 yards rushing caught four more for another 42 yards has not seen the ball that much this game well I have a feeling going to the second half they're gonna try to get him Beauford McGee is written down Brad Van Pelt takes him across he was looking at the trailer but wisely did not pitch back as man hill had him in his grasp I'll tell you what the Raiders for the most part have done an outstanding job against that pitch against Denver last week the charges were able to turn the corner with Anderson a full head of speed towards the end zone Raiders have strung it out to the sidelines they've not been able to get anybody loose on that pitch dan Reeves the Broncos coach said we were down there by San Diego last Sunday as much as we've ever been dominated by anybody right now Fouts what's for a big play and he has one down when the ball is caught by the second man was in [Applause] joyner and Dan Fouts is down sixteen yards on the catch the ball went through charlie joiners hands three years ago that would have been an incompletion which spouts plenty of pressure all over him through the hands and the Chandler just the way they draw first down charges a lot of receivers in one small area yes yes Dan Fouts appeared to sprained his knee a little bit on that last set up his left knee he's limping a little bit too done he's planning a bad knee he missed all of two games in the better part of the two others with me they go to the run on a first John play and hip down to the 46 yard line Reggie McKenzie coming up to make the stop on the play you know what he set up on that last pass I don't think there was any real pressure on his leg but in setting up and trying to really drive off of it looked like he may have turned it out a little bit it's bothering him to had no question is bothering him [Applause] set to go though on second down and seven trained James is wide open and he makes the play at the 7-yard [Applause] bust it covered [Applause] sets up very well lettuce team on his ball when he told far as he possibly can repeat this is a busted gun [Applause] welcome G please give me the fair catch of capability now the Chargers are challenging to take the lead in the third quarter they're down 13 to 10 [Applause] right smashing into the lino [Applause] long time [Applause] mr. Khiladi did an excellent job there was a nice big old airport Henderson to Montreux Raiders are tough to get it in the end zone [Music] those three rushing touchdowns this season but now [Applause] what second and go for the Chargers [Applause] like Buford McGee went up with about 21 to do that he didn't get in so it's going to be third down and goal for San Diego they put some big people in there Shawn Jones built aquel [Applause] this is not an offensive line that is used to the nuts and bolts of run blocking either this is a line that is a good pass protection offensive line this is where they'll really struggle big down linemen Submarine e offensive blocking in the line the tap to knock it back in the Raiders working [Applause] have to settle for field goals in the call from the six that's no guarantee that's three missed opportunities now by the San Diego Chargers strains it most football teams will try to scrimmage and then go why'd they do here the good pitch I think Anderson was just looking upfield never got his hands on the ball and of course the Raiders take advantage of the mistake and dog gonnit just catch the thing the ever exciting about Thomas on the feet Tammis you see his numbers with the missus from 30 and 35 yards well Shenko holding that time he walked sure [Applause] while he's still got a crew [Applause] it goes up and through and it's a tie game [Applause] Don quickie with BAP Trumpy at San Diego California where the Chargers have just tied the game 13 all on a field goal by Bob Thomas where early in the third quarter 11:30 to plan it there comes Fulton Walker for the Raiders well done by Walker up to the 34 yard line so the Raiders will start on offense with good position on the two missed field goes in the first half Bob Thomas was a little more deliberate on this one once again a good snap by McKnight a good spot by mojiko watch Jeff Barnes he makes solid contact with this football changes the spin of it but not the trajectory in three points I couldn't see where he blocked it oh absolutely he made contact with him but Oh in the game is tied [Applause] Mark Wilson and first down Marcus Allen thirty-eight Billy Ray Smith got him down there was a pickup of four or five yards on the play tell you what Billy Ray Smith for the San Diego Chargers in Marcus Allen for the Los Angeles Raiders doing a lot of them dancing today once Billy Ray reads play-action drops back oh here comes Allen again all right make the tackle second down and six now for the Raiders from their 37 yard line crack finds one up to the 42 yard line of Los Angeles Carlos Bradley who had the interception earlier knock him down there by himself more than the Chargers team told Mauri gets it the more he likes it Marcus Allen playing in his hometown the older the backup quarterback finished up last week in Seattle that was only after Mark Wilson had been intercepted four times [Applause] down to nine for the Raiders yeah to where he had to go across the 45 yard line he's good for a first time with a reception the free safety for the Chargers Jeffery Dale knocked him down it's a broken record Wilson to Marcus Allen just enough for the first down he knows where that marker is Lyndon King almost makes the tackle Geoffrey Dale does Wow the Raiders have made a business of winning the close games at the end they expect to in the opposition often plays like they expected to by making a mistake at a critical time that's where the chapters hope to stay away from Corey Ellis preached our witness is going down to the final gun Christenson makes a first down catch and he breaks free the rookie corner finally ran down with the game was good for 14 the most critical factor in stopping a tight end is at least at the outset trying to alter his pattern Lyndon king 57 does not touch Todd Christensen he is there to make the catch of course he's a tough receiver is all tight ends or he stays on his feet picks up a first down score for you done dallas leads Washington now 6 nothing the recipient Feildel this time 36 yards Cowboys were fighting in practice all week which is a good sign here's a hand up to Marcus Allen on first down he gets to the 36 yard line carlos bradley ran him down as the game clock comes down to 8:35 to play in the third quarter game is tied 1313 septons field goals from forty and thirty six yards in dallas leads the favorite redskins six nothing one over tom floors is mad at marcus allen as he gives it to him so much marcus complains he doesn't get it enough well today though he certainly got more than i think he ever has in his 1985 season [Applause] now second down and nine Wilson sends Marcus Allen in motion [Applause] Wilson came to the wrong side of the antenna receiver [Applause] nd was covering on the play-doh key Williams was going for the ball [Applause] well at least they try to get it to as someone else and watch the signals in to Marcus new mark.wilson whatever that means and there you see mark.wilson look at the roadmap there here we go guys this is the play signaling out the rate yes this is the pirate game time 1313 third quarter tim-mah for the rookie wide receiver for the whole mess 34 yards his first catch of the day Wayne Davis never made an attempt to look back Wilson does an outstanding job of putting air underneath this ball allowing run underneath it and watch Davis he never looks back at the quarterback and there's enough sidelines there room on this applying for Moffitt to make the catch excellent second look our producer today for NBC Sports is David Neal our director John Gonzalez as we have 753 to play in the third quarter the Raiders in the Chargers are tied 1313 first and goal Hawkins has been in the end zone once he gets close but didn't get in Derry Nelson got in now just short of the goal line that's not fair absolutely not fair that Marcus Allen runs it every down between the twenties and they give it to Hawkins at the goal line and he doesn't agree with you got to be in the framework of the body before it's a touchdown Marcus Allen deserves to carry into the endzone here as hard as he's booked today well if he lines up in the I set you know where he's going over the top [Applause] Marcus Allen has now scored four touchdowns against the Chargers this season fifteen career touchdowns as you seen eight games fine hands oh well finally they given the opportunity to find the endzone excellent timing on this play great springing those legs as much as he's carried it and caught it today six points for the Los Angeles Raiders they've not played well and they leave whatever it takes but we're a long way from done 7-eleven left that's the point you'll remember he's miss one of those deadly markers down in the extra point 1913 do we see how the extra point came out kicking has been a problem today one blocked one hit one missed only works in Canada we'll be back with the Raiders in the lead 22:13 Marcus Allen today Don is accounted for 127 total yards 71 rushing 56 receiving he's dropped several passes and had several runs called back by penalties he has earned his salary today [Music] as salaries a handsome one and deserves to be crispa ready to kick it off now for the Raiders with 7-eleven to play in the third quarter Los Angeles leading in this game 20 to 13 missed extra point early and now I'm down to the end zone Lionel James who is short but he's not small as little trainers likes to say they also can get up in the air he can stuff a basketball at five six I'd like to see that last time the Raiders and the Chargers played Dan Fouts was sacked five times in the first half of the game in the Coliseum today no sex at all on Fouts - five sixes around can spud Webb first down and ten now for the charges they gauntlet Ron and Spencer a big Ohio State fullback takes it ahead for just two yards both arms on the ball the charges with tap perhaps the most diverse offense and all the pro football Trump but there's only so much if you can use when you're down finding your own end well I'll tell you what though I think they're changing their offense on the fly here in the last five or six games they like to keep those four greatest athletes Chandler and the three running backs and at times Charlie Joyner in the game as much as they possibly can greater defense big and confident always keeping the pressure on you couldn't [Applause] chargers Matt Millen made the knockout you can see Mike Davis the strong safety asthma geek gets up limping out there with the pitch men 40 Gary Anderson they have practiced against this offense run by the San Diego Chargers a lot he cuts up side you see that safe Stacy Tiran and Mike Davis both out there with Gary Anderson shutting off the pitch McGee picks up the first down Buford McGee with a heavy limp now coming off the field we've had a lot of turned ankles in this game you're saying no Trump you think this is about a best playing field the lady consistently this is one of the best fields that you'll play on although last year it was very bad I can't tell you why they called it a stroke dirt here in San Diego thrilled grass though Beauford McGee sits down now Dan Fouts takes a look at a new if he sets up Anderson the wingback James goes in motion that's gotten the ball long Anderson is out there diving for the ball he can't get into the 42 yard one of the raiders Dan Fouts spreads the ball around if you get open he'll get you the ball that is correct also one of those timing quarterbacks often wondered why the San Diego Chargers such a prolific throwing team never went to the shotgun and Ernie's npz their offensive coordinator said that Fouts is a timing passer and he likes to set up take the ball from center and when when the team warms up before the game he doesn't just stand there and throw that every single time he takes it from the center and sets up now shotgun everybody they're in sync passing game of the Chargers second down and ten coming up now Anderson straight ahead around Frank Statler he's not pick 200 pounds drunk tackles and got ahead for 13 yards in a San Diego first down watch the acceleration he runs right through an arm here that Martin is no slouch when it comes to tackling and that's a quick 13-yard pickup by Gary Anderson just his sixth game in the NFL last week his first 100-yard rushing performance in the NFL against Denver Chargers felt they had to run the ball to keep the Raider past Raja knows 76% of San Diego's offense this season's come on the passing game right back to Gary Anderson six feet little over 190 actually they list a man and easy hit for a couple of yards out to the 47 yard line they've never paid yet to see the great pass blockers they see the great passers pay for him pass offense starts with pass blocking they've done a better job keeping the rush off outs Danny white has just thrown to Tony Dorsett on a 48 yard scoring play Dallas now leads favored Washington 13 to nothing [Applause] that's let's hear it and complain at the 33-yard line Lyle Alzado was the neutral zone yes the neutral zone who was almost at the end of the both sides number 77 on the defense holding number 68 [Applause] set that's Kowalski on the other side top of the screen while Alzado clearly offsides bottom of the screen 68 holding on I had a player I won't mention his name when the latter stages of a game you played offensive line he would always jump offsides just to get his name meant stun television he was in his game plan man sounds like a real acid I'm surprised he's not still in the league used to play here [Applause] inside the 35 map done lilies down [Applause] now this another clone coverage very uncharacteristic of the writers what Spencer just step outside there's a blitz coming no one picks up Spencer and he's off to the races big guy it's a nice tackle by Bill Bikel almost 30 yards down the field after rushing the quarterback big bucket from house take Tim Spencer at a 20 reception position inside the 25 Los Angeles leads 22:13 four minutes to play in the third quarter down quickie with Bob Duffy at San Diego he's going marker down though and it's in the radar secondary this may be an offense picked by the San Diego Chargers that's what the signal Mike Davis says is going to go against San Diego that's a pic online [Applause] somebody ran a pick [Applause] offensive pass interference number eighty first down they tried to plug this side with receivers and then screen off people and apparently telling wins though just pushed often that's illegal so instead of six and what would have been a extra point attempt that would have broken the tie comes back to the 35-yard line the Raiders still leave the gate along setback is the fleet Gary Anderson he gets the ball give him the 33-yard line Beauford McGee out now for the rest of the game we're told from the charger Vinci's pulled a hamstring so that'll hurt he was getting the ball a lot Duford mcgee lionel james the big force in the san diego offense catching a lot of passes today McGee's the guy on that pitch - he's the one who takes it from the quarterback and then gets it out to Gary Andersen let's watch Lionel James down here near side of the field Don he's out here by himself [Applause] he's the biggest man in San Diego this is brilliant Los Angeles Raiders deploying their defense there is nobody out there but realizes it disclosed the change again Phil Ray guys on the floor with move yep started because the the church's gets in the end zone and now it's an eight seconds to play in the third in San Diego there's really no gun it's 22 20th San Diego the Chargers and the Raiders Buford McGee on the sidelines and now more falls in the hands of little Train James look at the swing pass out to him he puts three people on the floor and takes it into the end zone for 33 yards and a touchdown [Applause] was good [Applause] here's the kickoff locker crosses the 20 [Applause] get the ball back first intimate first we have to settle this [Applause] the experience of damp out last touchdown [Applause] we're late getting on the deploying their their defense you can see at the top of the replay Matt Millen moving Mike Davis moving and all he did was just signal to Lionel James run a padded run anything he said his team watch again at the top of the screen now you see everybody moving around at Matt melon kind of jogging out there there's nobody up there to cover Lionel James that he does make a couple of spectacular moves into the end zone 2020 to score a lot of big people on the ground there's little train goes into the end zone that's Fulton Walker who just ran back the kickoff for the Raiders he was shaken up on the hit 259 to play in the third quarter a tie game and we'll be back right after this big play by little train James has San Diego rocking right now that done I'll tell you one thing what Don Coryell expected to happen against the Los Angeles Raiders is coming true he said if we're going to win this game that's going to be in the last two minutes and so far it's keeping true to form Jack griffie Stadium as Wilson swings it out and Marcus Allen with a blocker in front goes 26 yard line now we have a moment let's go to Bob Costas an NFL 85 Bob Don coming into today's game at the Orange Bowl Clayton and duper it caught only two touchdown passes between them this year now they each have one today first duper now Clayton on this 22 yarder from Marino in a do-or-die situation the Dolphins lead 14 3 back to Don and Trump [Music] [Applause] [Music] Shillito let's plug this week we have to win right now they are 14 to 3 nobody's winning here it's a tied game 20 to 20 wing Pass goes to Allen penalty marker comes in is Marcus Allen on 2nd and 8th gap to the 30 and I'll tell you what I've been impressed with the we got holding against somebody looks like it's going to be against the offense offensive pass interference number 46 what I was going to say has been very impressed with the defense of the San Diego Chargers today they have done an outstanding job Lyndon King Billy Ray Smith got out there made some big tackles against the very potent offense of the Los Angeles Raiders how about little train James eight receptions for 122 yards and a touchdown there was some touchdown that's today that is a season for a lot of guys here's a hand up to Marcus to the 30 on 2nd and 8th be third and five Fulton Walker has bruised ribs or not sure he'll be back today [Applause] Marcus getting up a limping [Applause] I'll tell you that Marcus had on his bulletproof he carries the ball gets hit everybody out there is trying to put a helmet on I mean he took the hardest hit I've seen the last five years last year at Denver never the play stayed in the game they got a pack here in style the other six days that are we game time 35 third quarter Christenson he's been eating them up all day swinging out of that tight end position get into the open area of the zone and he's ahead for a first down with a 13 yard reception from behind the defense you see Christensen that time was held up at the line of scrimmage but ran a great pattern 50 Carlos Bradley there in coverage but Christensen it's the job done now as the number for receptions now 69 yards remember he had eight Perot [Applause] hold off the Raiders Hawkins let's for a moment seventy-eight San Diego seems a lot stronger just physically stronger in the front three this year and a lot more aggressive too at the line of scrimmage he and the nose tackle Billy Ray Smith 54 sliding then realizing it's Hawkins he figured it was going to be Marcus Allen again to very little gain for the Los Angeles Raiders game clock is ticking down to 120 and running game is tied 2220 [Applause] mr. that the play goes he's going in and there's no flags of 54 yard touchdown pass play Jessie Hester the rookie from Ole Miss the number one draft choice who they're looking to as their speed burner of the future has been in the end zone twice today that time two Chargers trumpet appear just bumped each other off the play trying to cover god I think they thought he was going to go out of bounds they just relaxed a little bit when this ball was finally received watch what happens after just a short dental pattern Danny Walters in coverage man easy Marcus Allen does a good job on a block 54 yards later another big play of Los Angeles Raiders they lead by six soon to be seven when he gets an open feel you're chasing the wind funny Jessey history the extra point hit up and good I like Hester's percentages two catches today two touchdowns in the endzone twice in the Raiders break the tie and they now lead 27 to 20 with 59 seconds to play in the third quarter watch Marcus Allen we come in and how well he does running we certainly know what he does catching the ball but Allen realizes he gets one block he gets two blocks Hester stays inbounds ellen:oh to get three and a half points on that one unusual but the Raiders have a history of doing whatever it takes and right now they've broken the tie with a 27 to 20 win lead and 59 seconds to play yet in the third quarter now ready to kick off again and bounces eaten up the Raider past coverage pretty well today - and we have seen some unusual today heavenly last time the charges were in the end zone on the 33 yard pass played a little Jake little train James and now they drop back James and Gary Anderson to return the kickoff of Chris Bar whole quarter left to go on this one including 59 seconds to play in the third quarter the Raiders and the Chargers they don't like each other nobody likes the Raiders and they come to Tampa they should fill buildings James the 2-yard line amazing little manuals go into those big piles of big people also I can see him shoot out one end he's a very durable back to precise five six and I think they're being very generous and saying he's one seventy kind of doubt that five six and a quarter he's almost got the bottom of his number tucked all the way down in his pants he's so short [Applause] he's in the backfield now at full house backfield I run the option office let's see if they go to on first down in ten Spencer the power back takes it out to the 26 yard line got three second down and seven long made the tackle for the Raiders game clock down to 35 seconds and running down the third quarter and the Raiders lead the game 27 to 20 still no sacks by the Los Angeles Raiders against San Diego none at all this is a team that came into this game getting after the quarterback thirty nine sacks they'd had [Applause] second down and seven bounce play fakin here the nose tackle gets him and fat system and writhing in pain yeah it looks like he split the bridge of his nose there the gal comes from right over the center no Edie White couldn't quite get him and it looks like his helmet comes down on the top of his nose first sack of the day and fortieth of the season for the Los Angeles Raiders by the way eleven guys with sex this season can you imagine it the only starter doesn't have the SAP Westar Hayes yeah we'll be back after these messages from your local station [Applause] and that's Trump has missed almost four complete games this season with injuries he's not finished the last two seasons because of injuries and get it take good care of him as you see they're pretty even numbers on the scoreboard the Raiders for three quarters of play lead 27 to 20 tip Paul moving up on it was Rob Martin of the Raiders looking to try for the intercept then again Dan fat sees the play complete from seat of his pants Don that time the Los Angeles Raiders came with what a lot of people are now referring to as the bear defense they bunched defensive linemen at the line of scrimmage Center and both guards are covered there you see Pakal and Townsend running on a game and long gets his hand up and tips the ball away in completion Joe Theismann just - a touchdown hits for the Redskins - Gary Clark from 11 yards out it's now a 13-7 game Dallas is in the lead and over end Quantic downfield by mishchenko feeling it on the run is Mike Haynes he's across midfield out of the 47 yard line of San Diego a 39-yard punt and an 8 yard return and the Raiders have the ball in the lead when we come back [Music] carlos Bradley's shaken up for the San Diego Chargers he's helped off the field he had a big game today you intercepted one earlier remember bad ankle for Carlos and Woodrow law will come into the game to play injure the 10-year veteran from Alabama has been such a big part of the charger team over the last decade I'm going to bet the Los Angeles Raiders go right at 51 what do you lo Raiders have a habit of that somebody new comes in they'll try and sweep left [Applause] from an open set in the back field second back through Marcus Allen Bick moved to the outside but dari Nelson the young linebacker from Nebraska filled and made the tackle for the Chargers as with 1435 to play in the game second down and seven field position in the second half now certainly in favor of the Los Angeles Raiders and this time they start inside the San Diego part of the field Jews need the ball back raiders event big touchdown pass play the second of the day - Jessie Hester of a 27-20 way we all seem looking for more Marcus Allen's out there at the last moment the ball has slept away from him it would have been six now we go back to Bob Costas an NFL 85 all right Don at the Orange Bowl the Jets moved within four of the Dolphins at 1410 ken O'Brien on the past of Freeman McNeill the play covers 14 yards now pat leahy has a field goal in this game for the Jets but he's also missed three within his range and that's the difference right now bad day for the booters is back here in San Diego bout Thomas of the Chargers [Applause] short chat field goals 27:20 game with the ball third down and seven they get Wilson markers Robinson big day at two sacks last week rookie from Miami of Florida [Applause] it's going to be against the defense but it is so the sack is negated and a personal foul call against the defense the defense has played so well to this point in the ball game you certainly hope that they're not just falling apart here [Music] number 51 on a defense football games of universe scene Raiders have less penalties for less yards in their opponent it's happening today go to this [Applause] now once asked norms checked in a longtime NFL official who now works with the league office why the Raiders always lead the league in penalties say the reasons simple they follow more seems pretty Elementary doesn't they'll win a lot too right now they're holding to a seven-point lead 27 to 20 is Marcus Anna with that quick spread up the middle although spa was he down if he wasn't they got more yards cuz Doki Williams fell on the bar he is counted down tell you what they're a lot of coaches Dunn you mentioned penalty yardage watch woody low here from the outside he's not supposed to play he's been banged up for the last couple of weeks makes the initial hit there are certain coaches that like penalties because that means that your team is aggressive today [Applause] the first down the Raiders controlling the ball 27 to 20 to play the game Hawkins stood up at the 20-yard line he'll be short of the first down by about three yards Jeff Dale the rookie free safety made the knock down San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium has sold out in fact an all-time attendance record here 58,000 566 as the Raiders and the Chargers meet for the 52nd time over the 26 years they've been competing their 8th straight win over San Diego [Applause] for Los Angeles popkins alone setback tip off [Applause] he's one of them too didn't get a lot of penetration he fits and coaches will teach defensive lineman that when you sense that the quarterback is about to throw the ball just stop your rush get your hands up so that like a picket fence threw on the ball and a time it worked met Baran for a field goal of 38 yards this year's come between have been set down good left he didn't get there so it still a seven-point game but the charges get the ball back San Diego right after [Applause] no matter who wins today it will not see a game remembered fondly by Bob Thomas sir crisp are normally Trump field goal kickers win a lot of games today they're keeping the other team in the Vaugier absolutely right you know it's cruel about both kickers they can't find anybody to talk to hug that sideline [Music] when they make one everybody pat you on the head Pat's got a man the 30 29 yard line Matt Millen made the hit millon said during their week before the Seattle game we were starting to feel pretty good about ourselves didn't take as long to put our foot in our mouth yeah really they don't like plan Seattle by the way that's Charlie joiners first reception of the afternoon and it fills all-time leading receiver mr. clutch for San Diego [Applause] dark now got into get that way in San Diego it's been an overcast day whites have been on since the outset 27 to 20 range have the lead Chargers have the ball leading a big play Anderson's not going to get one as on second down he runs wide on you know that injury to Buford McGee of the San Diego Chargers is a critical injury to this offense we have not seen that three back offense since Buford McGee went out they've had to go to pretty much to the standard sweeps and all the rest of that stuff so charges right now going with a game plan they really don't want but lots of yards janitor's have to get to it works for them though it's third down and one there's Buford Magee out with a heating string pull the bombs away offensive Dan Fouts and the Chargers all the headlines in the paper today in a taxi a little bit [Applause] innocence lashing for the first down buta Dean he's out to the 32 yard line in San Diego old operated with four new dance from their knocked out on the play by Shawn Jones and Reggie McKenzie [Applause] Lionel James I noticed comes in to ballgame Anderson stays Kellen Winslow goes out other guys get to play football in this offense their offense looks like a defense on most teams that there's many people coming in and out and I'll tell you the people they have their Anderson Chandler Joyner Spencer for very gifted athletes now waiters are not sure exactly what they're going to do your run or pass got a speed net backfield and accelerate likes for there's a swing Lionel James heads out with the ball at the 40 the man is seven feet tall [Applause] James runs a fake-out watch the pump by bounce lady doesn't even pump it but James runs an out then it up and really goes up for an offensive rebound and comes down with it kitsch No in receiving yards one gun for 33 yards in a touchdown we could be going to ot today right now it's the Raiders waiting by 7:00 [Applause] takes a look man is open chandler going for the ball is broken up dutifully by Lester Hayes Chandler had him beaten Lester Hayes when the came back yet it and Dan Fouts is to take a look at that one again Chandler is open early but unfortunately nuts can't get it to him this is well defense by Lester Hayes who can make the big play for you words of Coryell looming larger is going to come right down [Applause] the cleaner guard mark for the Raiders he's the only one but smear when he doesn't over too much that's true second down Anderson finds a way to get about four Z's inside the 40-yard line of the Raiders knocked down by a rod marker Robo linebacker for Los Angeles and that team's leading tackler most excitingly two players in the NFL in 1985 my one is one that weighs 325 pounds and one that weighs half that much James and William Perry [Music] I'm towards about any of the car it's hard to tell exactly what the charges are gonna do 37 he gets hit away just before he's hit Kevin Winsley at the 29-yard [Applause] San Diego [Applause] John the reception gun seeing the next generation of offensive football right here the readers are having a tough time knowing whether to set up to stop the run or the pass [Applause] right now they're not stopping anything the biggest play on this drive though is the 26-yard throw the little train James who went up over a much taller linebacker to take it down first down 10 San Diego 828 to play Randi's later 27 to 20 Lionel to Twitter and go inside the 25 he gets up John Adam looking to get the ball again came into the game is the charger is leading rusher the Chargers leading receiver the Chargers leading punt returner the Chargers leading kickoff return I'd try to trip him stuck a foot out didn't take him long to learn the playbook either little train James as an engineering grad of Auburn [Applause] for the Chargers Spencer and the Raiders stuff that run as the game clock is running 7:40 to go and running in fourth quarter Los Angeles lead San Diego 27 to 20 card to believe that these two teams played 13 days ago Dan Fouts won't touch that blood on his nose either that's too Badge of Courage right there he walks in the huddle you look at your quarterback the blood on his you play better you really do you get the idea maybe this guy a tough cookie less than two fat play bacon swings now here's Anderson inside the 20 first down and more he's not down [Applause] five season [Applause] Davis said tulips trailing [Applause] he's had a tremendous receiver here named Gary garrison they called the ghost this looks like the new ghost now you see him now you don't a puff of smoke Gary Anderson he goes into the extra point is good in the game is time [Applause] Marcus Allen had a big first half he's been closed up much more in the second half the dew point out front this has been a day of big plays the last to make one that Gary Anderson of the Chargers as he went into the end zone Sam seal he's a flier but not an Escalade as he stuck back he's in trouble now 20 at the 16-yard line for special teams urns it's 27 to 27 with 654 to play last time these two teams play [Applause] specialties were very next week in first games the Steelers one of the co-leaders in the AFC Central go to Houston to play the Oilers Miami's at Indianapolis and great second games and putting Cincinnati in the Raiders no England goes to Seattle since then the other AFC Central leader San Diego plays at Denver next Sunday Kansas City at San Francisco a late starting games Eastern Time [Applause] Marcus Allen to this point pitches I think they're just about used him up and right now he still got some left Marcus Allen gets the ball and takes it out to the 20-yard line he got four maybe five six forty seven to play the Raiders [Applause] level artisans at winning the close games in the final moments and they have a stage possibly set again today with 6:30 to play in the clock running in the fourth quarter the game tied 27 all down tricky with bath Trumpy Murphy Stadium with a rack [Applause] [Music] the Raiders with Wilson at quarterback [Music] grabs us all those blue shirts making a play on it Lynden ginga's call from low watch Marcus Allen now he doesn't have the fresh legs this ball is thrown low no question about that bounces right off is leave it go like this is this is the time of the game you want to give him the ball getting the ball [Applause] he likes a girl they like it Marcus Allen now runs a pattern as Wilson takes a look swings it out goes to Hawkins and he's a hit for a raider first down up to the 30-yard line black runs down to six minutes in running in the fourth quarter in the game is tied 27 all Gary Nelson you can see Hawkins he's going to block up a man blitzes the man doesn't so he releases right underneath the linebacker coverage excellent pick up and Isley the Chargers looking for Marcus Allen Hawkins comes up open laterz hello 13 to 10 halftime [Applause] it's a tie game again at 27 as the Raiders go to the run you know pretty soon they're gonna put it up top they almost have to but you also want to be conservative here done with 524 and ticking left in the fourth quarter he'll cheer standing in a way of the assistant coach so the Chargers can't see the hand signals need the mark Wilson [Applause] the opposition of the 30 we'll make sure everybody's on the same page and get set to take the snap five gives it to him and Todd Christensen makes another first down reception for the Raiders getting inside the comforts and coming up the ball then turning up feeling the Raiders now have the ball out to their 42 yard line and first down nobody held up Todd Christensen he just runs it eight or nine yard pattern turns around in his right between Byrd and Billy Ray Smith making the it's easy pickings for the Raiders [Applause] Davis in Canada [Applause] [Music] run the ball on first down to the 45 yard line do the Raiders woody low makes the knockdown as you see the game clock ticking down to 408 two plays he looked tired to you carrying the ball got to be tired 24 carries 95 yards a number of receptions also several drops [Applause] Berner in this offense today though has been Jessie Hester the rookie wide receiver two catches two touchdowns [Applause] incomplete at the 30 Williams coming up veneer flow the nearest receiver but they will Hubbard's was good Williams fell down slipped on the turf [Applause] we'll take you out of the play yeah the big third down conversion for the Los Angeles Raiders incomplete passed out the clocks and Boghossian one of the [Applause] situation she'll stand right next and buckets it out for the show Mark Wilson with the defense changing in the [Music] Raiders have to left the Chargers have all three others with 335 to play and we'll be back to San Diego right after this the 85 NFL season starts down the stretch run of regular season play pretty soon some good matchups next week it all begins next Sunday with NFL 85 here on NBC Sports and NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle will be the guest as the games include Pittsburgh at Houston Miami at Indianapolis the bills at Cleveland then in late starting games the Raiders are at home to play the Bengals who won again today in our co-leader in the AFC Central the Patriots go to Seattle Seahawks one today so did New England San Diego goes to Denver always a tough place to win a football game yeah live studio audience asking questions of the commissioner there right now we've got 335 - won seven straight games against the Chargers game third down and seven a lot of speed and slack's lone setback miss Hawkins Wilson gets time with all is caught by trust in sin and he fights his way ahead it looks like he has the first down to the 47 on sheer strength Todd Christensen fights his way ahead for foreknew down John handy in the coverage Titian's got to expect contact and then win that contact it's a spin any kind of elbows him out of the way makes the catch keeps his body between the ball and the defensive back and another big first down pick up [Applause] for the placekicker isn't this game russer filming inside 20 minutes to first down has plenty left us he's down to the 36 yard line he has another later first down with 2:45 to play over a hundred yards and certainly didn't look tired on that plenty did he 25 carries what his fifth hundred yard game this season you get in Marcus Allen's numbers every week for some new record they break their own pretty impressive the lone loss last week to Seattle there were 13 100-yard rushing performances two and one games so that meant that there were 12 games and of the 12 games 11 teams won the Raiders the only loser and we pause briefly for station identification this is the NBC television network KC SCTV San Diego [Applause] we're at San Diego where coach Don Coryell look Sam the Raiders hit the ball $27 - 26 to play in the game [Applause] go first in ten from the 37 turns the corner and he's down inside the 25-yard line bird and Jeff Dale the Safety's gala is we're gonna win down to the two-minute warning an 11 yard run by Frank Hawkins great block 2 by Marcus Allen out in front of him in case you're wondering Chris bars longest successful field goal of the 1985 season 41 yards though the two-minute warning is given we'll be back hey what did you decide quarterback mark with all the scores in the stories of this 10th Sunday of plan the National Football League coming up when this game concludes when we go to NFL 85 right now though we've got two minutes to go and there's nobody better than the Pro Football business than the Raiders at playing beat the clock as Chris bar thinks the lonely thoughts of a place kicker whose foot might decide a football game when you miss a field goal denier a field goal kicker you might as well speak a foreign language because nobody's going to be talking to you only position in football where a God can know nothing about the game of football and decide a game that driver knows a lot about it but there's been guys have played in this league John Smith the New England Patriots first NFL game he ever played he was the first one he was ever at or saw two months to go the clock set up now first down and ten epson black dough fats can go a long way with that much time Marcus an ellipse to turn the corner he stops the clock with 1:54 to play Danny Walters man him out of bounds you'll remember Walters big play in the first quarter though later drive right down the field then Walters intercepted the end zone to stop a touchdown remember this drive started at the Los Angeles Raiders 16 yard line this has been a brilliant Drive by the Los Angeles Raiders a lot of prep went into it - Carlos Bradley went out injured ankle seen a lot of troops go down on this game 154 to play in the game is time 27 Christenson he's set to the left of the top view screen 46 running a pattern Wilson takes a look at him questions it is in the endzone for a touchdown yards and a touchdown not over yet though 149 to play low-five one way to celebrate this guy's experience every celebration there isn't a football field darkness is an excellent pattern run by Christensen he gets an outside release he's got a quarterback gilbird right there with him you see the move and put me inside I'll tell you what if that plays tight in like a wide receiver two games he is absolutely just beating up on the San Diego Chargers [Applause] 45-pound tight-end defensive backs supposed to be a specialist to that but Christiansen beats him with a move and for the extra point which they get 149 to play and it's 3427 then Chargers get it back the laughs night on NBC television leads up with punky brewster the NBC Sunday night movie streets of justice wife and child were murdered he's fighting back watch this touchdown again to release a little fake outside Burt bites on it Christensen in two games 14 catches the 142 yards against the San Diego Chargers and I'd watch his kickoff they just had a meeting over here on the sidelines watch for something funny here by the Chargers [Applause] Spiner hit down train takes it at the goal line he's out to the 29-yard [Applause] [Music] train bus with the discus yeah well I thought they were gonna reverse or something because they meant for the longest time on the sidelines and here comes at San Diego two-minute offense bombs away offense of the San Diego Chargers anybody can get him down there foul says the man Christensen might have had the game-winner on his last reception the touchdown catch 143 left to play the Chargers will try to get in the end zone and down by 7 bounce looks he's got Anderson and he is this guy's got more [Applause] still going and Anderson's down to the 30 Caze brings him down going to play 30 but this guy's going to be busy for the San Diego charges for the next number of years congratulations mr. Alex Panos for signing him to a contract there's one shot adding there's two three watch this right brush but my canes bringing him down yes sir to the ground he is a brilliant [Applause] and he gets the Chargers in position but field girls have no account now they need a touchdown they need an extra point to send this to overtime Washington has been beaten by Dallas final score the Cowboys 13 the Redskins 7 [Applause] here at San Diego Don cranky with bath Trumpy 130 left to play in regulation maybe in the game the Raiders are leading 30 for 27 but the Chargers running back hitting big plays and now they have the ball first down at the 33 yard line Chandler on the right track the middle he's down to the night ready to play I'm dead serious when I say this I want him to play more I don't want him to stop keep it up this lady did him here's fats on first down Stanton he throws he's got a man who loses the ball Charlie join her at the 10-yard line Sam Seale was right with him for the Raiders he hasn't been used a lot today rather surprising to see Charlie let this one slip away from him full blitz coming by the Raiders picked up that's an easy catch but Charlotte couldn't hang on second and ten bounce is unbelievable he sees everything out there absolutely and he backs away from the center so he's got a good field of vision he's on 1:07 to play in the game superimpose to the top of your screen it's 27 for the Chargers 34 for the Raiders so San Diego has to hit into the end zone pouts goes down at the 28th only the second sack of him today the game plaque now shows 102 to play in but a big down arrives it's going to be third down coming out we got the people general Gregg Townsend dr. Seth [Applause] pingas five yards you have no idea because of the sect the churches would have had to take a timeout it's the last two minutes so they set the ball and start the clock or it what a saving Bentley against the Raiders for the Chargers and of course it is also a first down with 102 to play first down for the Chargers 14 yard line of the Raiders I got to get the ball to James here don't you somehow there's a lot of people out there weren't bad [Applause] that stands in takes a look makes it flow it's kept beautifully by the Raiders rot Martin got a hand down the ball to break up what would have been a touchdown throw as Lionel James was open Brenna curl route out of the backfield Martin had a perfect drop he's reading the eyes of the quarterback Sean Jones Bikel both with arms up Martin able to get up there just tip the ball away or you're right that's six points [Applause] damn it's been even all day Raiders by three at halftime the Raiders by seven but the Chargers challenging for that 57 seconds to play in regulation now the Chargers use a timeout so Dan Fouts comes over make sure that he gets all the counsel he can as the game is on the line I think the Raiders changed defenses on him gun saw something he didn't expect him no question he realizes the importance of this last 19 yards excuse me 14 yards here for the Chargers so counsel is good at this point the words have coach Don Coryell looming large all day long he told his team during the week if we win it'll be at the very end of the game he didn't say anything about overtime and that could happen if the Chargers can get it in the end zone Dave levy one of the coaches they're more afraid in the other the Chargers and the Raiders have played one overtime game in their 52 September 14th 1987 that gave 30 24 [Music] the AFC West has gained the reputation as the best in football raiders how they stand right now is you're well aware Denver of course hooking up with a 49ers tomorrow night at Mile High Stadium Seattle was a winner today impressively at New Orleans Kansas City has gone south Chiefs opened up with a three-in-one record had now lost six games in a row coach mackovic took away their free lunches during the week on blitz here the Raiders are big rush comin in here it comes fout stands in let's it go penny knockers down and a touchdown that's going to be defensive offsides I'll tell you something though this is the Raiders get it back down fifteen seconds to play [Applause] this is the best I've seen in years [Applause] left defensive backfield coach of the Raiders in head coach Tom Flores Charlie Joyner a 17-year veteran has got more passes than any player National Football League history on the receiving end of a big one from Dan Fouts that ball looked tipped you think this isn't big now Bob Thomas has had kind of a shaky day but he's right there on the extra point 53 seconds to play the game is tied at 34 look once again at the the San Diego charger is a very touchdown by the San Diego Chargers and I thought this ball was tipped at the line of scrimmage or bachelors from behind the defense will see the poor plants coming [Applause] not tip what a catch by Charlie joiner he dropped one earlier but had room on Sam seal converted wide receiver i ballgame so the Raiders will get it back with 53 seconds to play and mischenko the rookie from Michigan State will hit this as hard as he'd ever hit a football in his life no squint kickin hear that that drive started at the san diego 29 and took i'd say maybe a minute no more than a minute to get the ball in the endzone 51:56 seconds to get it that far and in the end zone Gary Anderson the big guy in the drive but Walker back in with Bruce ribs a little too the Raiders take Lynnae scored with what just over a minute to play they'd have to play beat the clock again that they will now game tied 53 seconds left back deep to receive Fulton Walker's back in the game was shaken up earlier he's in the near side and the far side of Sam seal was just beating on that play by Charlie Joyner mischenko it's the hitters have 53 seconds to get in field goal range you got a choice now for the Los Angeles Raiders do you try for the field goal range or do you simply try for overtime and the biggest play in overtime is the coin flip there's no no doubt about what the Raiders do right here they go for get it down feel as fast and as well as they can and get in field goal range Chris bars longest one yards he's made a lot of big ones to win games in his career and so his Bob Thomas now the Chargers the Bears time leading scored as ten seasons there now [Music] the Barfield is going to go to the rata Marcus Allen breaks it out to the 30-yard line as they look to catch the charges in an all-out rush got a head for Tenten 44 seconds left and got an official timeout to check the miters Raiders take the timeout Raiders take the timeout that's a first down bye Marcus Allen notice the Chargers are playing almost to prevent defense playing a three deep down with people have lost a lot of games doing that against the radar yeah that's true 44 seconds left awful lot of fans out there say Wayman I don't understand why you go to that prevent defense it doesn't prevent anything but the science of the defense is all you're trying to do is protect the yardage behind you you don't care if they catch it in front of you if you're hoping that they either go out of bounds or the clock eats up the time before they get enough yardage to be in a field goal attempt range [Applause] mark.wilson the quarterback who's not received many cheers at home and his career as a professional most of his career has been spent as a backup team shoot Jim Plunkett which is what brought him to the lineup again this year has missed two seasons with injuries in the past as Mark Wilson playing hurt now though he's in much better shape than he was a couple of weeks ago on a real estate between the Raiders in field goal range but it happens fast in this lake to the offensive in South America Wilson takes a lot he fires in it's incomplete it'll be sucking down Smith puts on a big league pop on Frank Hawkins box top with 40 seconds to play at second down and 10 Raiders hard to tell actually who's at fault here Wilson does do a good job of looking down the field that ball is certainly thrown behind Hawkins [Applause] Marcus Allen those forward carefully constructed by market that stops the clock too that is join get hit head-on in the ball pops forward that is one smart cookie [Applause] watch him he's got it there does he throw it out of bounds absolutely he throw no question of and stops the clock here we go it starts again now they realize what Marcus Allen was doing they're not gonna let him get away with it and the Raiders don't realize that the clock is running now they finally do they do they feel it and I take over time break the huddle at their leisure and we're going to overtime here at San Diego Wilson's not even gonna take a snap visiting team calls the flip of the most instances in Overton cliff has been the factor in determining yet toriel is right on the money [Applause] think of what they've done in the end of the first half they drive from their own 9 yard line down for a field goal Bob Thomas misses and in the end of the game in 56 seconds they go from their own 29 for 6 points in the endzone it is remarkable in overtime games in the National Football League how many are won by the team that wins the toss that's it that's it that's the biggest plan overtime first possession means a lot the home team makes the call they course could have a tie game if they should conceivably go 15 minutes of overtime a full quarter and regular-season and not get a score done I think the visiting team calls the flip just as they do it the odds as a team we see who the two luckiest players calling this year because tails you want the ball Jew Charlie we went to ball [Applause] pretty basic decisions taking a while to make well Martin don't know what goal to defend to talk [Applause] did win the toss now get the ball wait come back after these messages from your local station [Applause] 39 alive with BAP Trumpy this is dawn crooky back here San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium we're ready to start overtime and the Chargers have won the toss one of the reasons we're in overtime was something that happened earlier in the game spy on the second quarter put some excitement back in the extra point it was up the Ray Smith and emerge pro player for the judges came through and slapped it back and so when the final numbers were up at the end of regulation not final but regulation numbers it was 34 34 the Jets have just come from behind in a touchdown past from ken O'Brien to a backup tight end rocky cleaver they leave the favor dolphins at the Orange Bowl 1714 do purchase Gordon do do he gone after that Miami back on top 50 yards 21 21 17 Miami now [Applause] under a minute to play so we start over time as the Raiders kickoff James thinks the better of it he'll let it come out as a touchback [Applause] in overtime Bob Thomas has missed two field goals 35 and 30 yards today he's made one then you give him another chance and over time absolutely the man is time Justin kicked out a national championship team at Notre Dame picked for the Bears for a long time as Ben all time leading scorer [Applause] who makes that happen Tuesday get set to roll roads down takes a luck swings it out he's got a man but not for much gain of three years old Lionel James coming out of the backfield cuts back at the ball Dino had a factor now excuse me an update on that Miami Jets core Dan Marino to mark duper 50 yards with 41 seconds left then you got time for two three more scores this league is going 21:17 Miami over the Jets while James comes off the field West Chandler has been quiet we can explore [Music] [Applause] bounce they pick up the Blitz come down thought out to the 45 look like Pete Holohan he gets a 23-yard he's been quiet regards to Dan Fouts it look so easy absolutely looks easy first catch of the day by holohan being somewhat forgotten I think the waiters are paying so much attention to James station 2 ran in coverage big pickup by the way Duprey caches 217 yards mrs. F throws out a weights with a broken leg man jump dead wife 17-year veteran left early so they'll call that and it'll bring up first down in 15 now while they sort things out here let's go back to Bob Costas in New York Don about a minute to play at the Orange Bowl the Jets have just taken the lead but Miami comes back here's Dick Enberg [Applause] detsen big stuff happening coast-to-coast right now Dan Fouts on first and 15 guns long as Anderson nicely played by Lester Hayes of the Raiders who knocked it away look at the two guys there who can arrive yeah he made no attempt to enter set that ball though you can see that it looks like Lester his bet misses the bomb all the way you say hey he just knocks it away he has no no intention whatsoever of trying to intercept that ball [Applause] Bob Thomas gets himself set [Applause] iego positioned a long way and second down and 15 is coming up for the judges Anderson Anderson is down to the 37 yard line over time the game is tied 30 it was a 22-yard he has made some quick pledge to do now watch what happens for some reason the defense collapses one step outside there's nobody there absolutely James gets a block on Stacy Tiran Anderson that's a quick what did you say Dennis how many yards 20 23 yards 23 yards on a pickup mouth Thomas says the pressure builds paces the sidelines we ran over time time 34 34 Spencer head down bows ahead to arms on the ball smart football with the Raiders hunting football's right now and the game ball now is down to the 32 yard line and fats at his leisure not encumbered by any clock ticking out of the overtime session shows 1222 play would only be a tie game if there was no scoring through a full 15 minute overtime only in postseason do they go to sudden death and keep playing over time we've seen San Diego one of couple of misses but a lot of big makes in this career [Applause] he's got wild teams he's in field goal range gets to the 17-yard offensive display [Applause] New Year's Eve in San Diego the Chargers pull this one out especially the way they played the Raiders two weeks ago waiting for James no question about this little curl banner James is surprised that there's no coverage on him whatsoever Lionel James we need to calculate it up get Lionel James with receptions a hundred and sixty-seven yards my gains in tackling Lionel James's knocked himself cold all of the sixteen [Applause] Hey look at this Gorman we still play one more Drive [Applause] so it's good I think Spencer might get the ball here truck here's a final scoring now from it's 21 to 17 the dolphins coming from behind in the last minute to beat the Jets who came from me six to play first down Spencer might get it straight either going to another the smallest man in the Bayless eight feet tall Lionel little train James Winson [Applause] Cesar was never as big in Rome as this man is going to be in San Diego James 7 carries 11 pitches 167 yards and a touchdown put a hand on him for the last 17 yards let's watch it from another egg great job by the office McKnight clapping rawski Masek Lachey the game is over the Chargers win we'll be back to San Diego after this nobody does it better than Dan Batson certainly not his the and a little train Jane this is the play that won the game is Lionel James breaks tackles puts people down again gets into the end zone in overtime and the final numbers are up that Chargers rally the beat the Los Angeles Raiders for the first time in eight tries 42:34 now for Bob Trumpy this is done tricky because of the length of today's game you won't see punky brewster with the rest of the NBC lineup is coming up glad you could be with us charger Raider game and this one belongs to the Chargers for the first time they beat the LA Raiders the Chargers win 40 34 in overtime we'll have more of the Chargers and renters have plenty from the NFL all coming up next on out exports rap and a good afternoon everybody welcome to Alkesh sports wrap well you can label this a typical charger Raider football game these two played their typical knock-down drag-out but the charge is winning 42:34 in overtime the Raiders fall to 6 and 4 while the Chargers go to 5 and 5 and still very much alive in the NFL playoffs well the charges like to say their defense is getting better all the time Danny Walters picks off a Raider pass this in the opening period and the Chargers put together a good drive to only they have it end right here Bob Thomas misses a field goal but the defense gives air Coryell another chance Lee Williams right there to pick up a Raider fumble this in Raider territory and the Chargers wastes no time Dan Fouts takes a look takes a look at everybody hits West Chandler here and what a catch 7 nothing San Diego but the Raiders they can air it out too and in a hurry Mark Wilson 35 yards to rookie Jessie Hester at 7-7 opening period second period now a turnover hurt San Diego Fouts Gary Andersen he can't make the play but Brad van pelt does sets up the score for the Raiders Frank Hawkins takes it in point after was blocked so it's 1310 Los Angeles but the Chargers have a chance to tie just before half and Thomas misses again 1310 Raiders at halftime 3rd period now writers take the lead at 20 to 13 the charges tie right here Fouts quickly to Lionel James he turns it on 33 yards and it's tied at 20 but the Raiders also score in a hurry Wilson the Hester again bad tackling here Esther goes 54 yards and the Raiders are back on top by a score of 27 20 fourth-period now here's yet another reason why the charges want a Gary Anderson the pass 21 yards to Gary Anderson and it's all tied at 27 now the writers take the lead in the final minutes Wilson 24 yards to talk Christensen 3427 Raiders now the charges tie it in the final minute Dan Fouts beats the Blitz this to Charlie Joyner and it's all tied up it goes on to overtime tied at 34 in the OT Lionel James takes it right off the gut 17 yards for the game-winner 4034 Chargers in overtime the chargers and now five and five and they take on Denver next Sunday right here on 39
