hello again everyone i'm al michaels and welcome to our tenth season of ABC's Monday Night Baseball we'll have eight one-day games for you over the next two months then three Sunday games of significance in September and we will wrap up our coverage in October with the 1985 World Series but last year when Jim Palmer joined us in the booth there was some question as to whether or not he would finish the season in the booth or on somebody's active roster he is back again in 85 are you here for the duration I think so all it took us one trip to the ballpark put on the uniform throw a couple of baseballs and have my shoulder hurt again and I decided I made the best decision by being retired you'll be here until Howard Cosell and who begins to prod you Cody the coach will join us on the 17th of June all right you're on the sidelines now you can be an impartial observer what do you find significant about the division races thus far in 85 well in the National League in the East everybody expected the Cubs and the Mets to battle it out I think this is a big surprise there is the Montreal Expos they were here over the weekend I talked to some of the players everybody said gee they picked us for last reigns is not playing particularly well I mean he's not off to a great start Dawson and even though his knees are healthy is struggling a little bit within the left eye around the left eye yesterday so that's a big surprise they're young pitchers have come along over the National League West everybody expects the defending national league champions the San Diego Padres to win and they are doing that even though Alan Wiggins hasn't been playing I think the big surprise over there in a negative way I guess is is the Atlanta Braves Bob Horner's back a somewhat healthy Bob Horner you get Bruce Souter you expect him to close games hasn't had that many opportunities when he has of course he's pitched very well I think the big surprise in the National League West though is the Cincinnati Reds they were riding 72 and 90 last year Pete Rose came over late in the summer did an excellent job the last year I think his enthusiasm is carried over this year they're four games over 500 and playing well you know way the Dodgers are sort of lucky to be where they are they're only four and a half back they've had a lot of injuries they've had pitching problems to a certain extent Alejandro Pena may be finished not only for the year before his career the Dodgers in the MEXT neither team is hitting but the men seem to be hitting in more timely fashion because there the Dodgers are in 4th at the capsule look at the nationally what about your feelings about the American League right now well Toronto they went out and got Patil a great relief pitcher got Laval made a kind of a somewhat big trade for them trading Davey Collins and Alfredo Griffin over to to Oakland to to get Caudill and that's worked out very well because Tony Fernandez has come along and they're in first place the Orioles in Detroit are in just about a virtual tie for second place I kind of expected the Tigers to struggle a little bit there nobody could expect them to have that great start and when you go 35 and 5 it gives you a lot of confidence they didn't have that start this year over in the American League West I think the biggest surprise to me of course is the angel jean-marc has come over there he's brought that intensity that he's always had that has made him maybe probably the the best worst manager as some people have called him because you never really won but they're playing very well I think it surprised to me as the Minnesota Twins everybody talked about their weak bullpen for them to have a nine game losing streak and then a 10 game losing streak where they're hitting seems inconceivable all right now we'll turn our attention to tonight's game as the Dodgers take on a New York match at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles the pitching matchup Edie Lynch against unbeaten Orel Hershiser let's line up tonight has the switch-hitting Mookie Wilson leading off in center field and the platooning Wally Backman at second base then Keith Hernandez the Gold Glove first baseman hits third with Gary Carter over from Montreal batting in the cleanup spot George Foster struggling at 230 bats fifth plays left Danny Heep with tuning in right field batting six Howard Johnson gets the start tonight at third base with Rafael Santana who is rested yesterday that shortstop and the pitcher is and linked with a three and three record and an earned run average of an even three the Dodgers still in the dugout and ready to take the field there is Jerry Royce who pitched well the other night the Dodger pitching no matter what happened through the years injury one is always seen and again this year it has as well and the man going to the mound tonight is pitching at the moment as well as anybody in the National League Orel Hershiser who is five and all and leads the league in earned run average at one point seven all for the Dodgers it is Greg Brock at first base he's been bothered by both elbows thus far this season Steve sax who started the season with an injured lower leg at second base Mariano Duncan was there opening night second baseman biggest Eve was hurt Steve Anderson has had a bad back and he's just off the disabled list but he's in government making restart at shortstop and they go with Bob Baylor who was the original Toronto Blue Jays first man they ever picked in the expansion draft when they came into the league in 77 he plays third the appeal has RJ Reynolds in left field he's been the hottest to the Dodgers of late which is not a saying much Pedro Guerrero is now back in center he was a third up until a couple of nights ago the court has moved him to the outfield and Kent Landro has gone from center to a platoon roll in right field back of the plate for the Dodgers is the man who blocks it as well as anybody in baseball Mike Scioscia on the mound is orel hershiser in his second full season with the Dodgers or jimmies the kind of guy who looks and has the composure of a man has been around for about ten years well he certainly does and overpowering sinker right around 90 miles per hour great curveball throw any time and a changeup he uses sparingly but since he's been taken out of the bullpen last year when nine and six last year five and oh this year he's been an outstanding maybe the outstanding pitcher in the National League I talked with Dodger manager Tommy Lasorda prior to the game his team one game under 500 and here's how he assesses the season thus far we are better than we have shown I think that we're going to turn things around we've had problems not scoring any runs now the discouraging thing is is that we are not knocking in the runs we've led the league with leaving men on base but the encouraging thing is that we now are getting the men on base and that's important if they're there because if they weren't getting on base I would be really worried the sort of assessing some of the Dodger problems ever the optimist though and he is reason for optimism tonight with Hershiser on the mound in the Twilight here we go with Mookie Wilson leading off and looking to the strike Mookie Wilson has recently started wearing glasses for day games and right now it's bright enough to be a big game the lights are on but taking no effect at 511 los angeles time well you mentioned twilight allen if you're going to be a pitcher this is the time you want to get out there there you saw that excellent curveball it's the time when you want to get ahead of the hitters because they don't see the ball they don't see the spin on the ball and I think back to when the Orioles used to go into Anaheim and you'd have Nolan Ryan a hard thrower coming in there in Twilight it's very hard to see and go back to last year's all-star game quite good and balanced whaler overpowering at this time of day you gotta throw strikes in the Twilight last year in San Francisco the strike to pitch got him swinging on a pitch in the dirt he'll get a lot of strikeouts that way and the ball rolls back to Hershiser and that's one you will to see the picture get an assist after a strikeout for the first baseman getting the foot out here but this happens alive as Hershiser keeps the ball down well you talked about Scotia's ability to block the plate when runners coming here you see his ability to block the plate on a curveball in the dirt he got right in front to let the ball bounce up into him went right out to her shocker he made the play for the out in his last outing Wednesday against Philadelphia Hershiser had to fill he's doing exactly that he was throwing pitches down in the dirt bouncing them and getting them to either strikeout or groundout for the most part then route to his fifth win of the season while he Backman looks at a strike and it's Owen one Wally Backman is a switch-hitter but for the most part he might as well just be a left-handed hitter biggest Elvin Chapman plays against almost all left-handers in a total platoon situation on the count is one and one Backman's been up only nine times against right-handed pitching against left-handed pitching at 110 times against the righty Baelor head to the grass the third is back 1000 at the plate Valley is not averse to laying one down Dave Johnson former teammate of Jim Palmer at Baltimore his second season with the Mets currently doing a fine job when you consider that of course he said the key to this ballclub was his young pitchers they won 90 games last year six less than the Cubs one but he said if his if his pitchers come around these young pitchers then they have a chance to win and when you consider that they're 13 games over 500 and strawberry's been out a long time they're playing a lot better I think that even expected they would what to the background is in the dirt strawberry by the way is with the team he has traveled with the team since going on the disabled list and it appears he'll be ready to play the match they're hopeful anyway by the end of June meanwhile I go with Danny Heath and the rookie John Christianson with tuning in right field Gary when you think about it if it meant begin to hit or had they hit to this point it might be four or five games in front well they're scoring about three and a half runs a game Davies said if they get a little bit over four then they can really have some fun I think what he's pointing at is that their pitching has been so excellent that we'll give him a chance to happen maybe a little bit more enjoyable job as manager right now he they had to win the one-run ball games and they've been able to do that and the Dodgers for the most part habit and in good measure it's been because of very shabby defense the Dodgers by the way did not make an error over the weekend the first time this year they've gone three games in a row without making one as her Tigers right back went out so he begins with two strikes one on a pinion bringing their dirt and this one that has Backman going after it low well we talked about that sinker the bottom dropped out at three to eat looks like the ball is gonna stay up just sinks down below the bat and you have that kind of stuff it's really tough to lay off that Keith Hernandez numbers don't look very bad but Keith will be the first to tell you he's not particularly happy with the year he's having he would be second in a lineup tonight in terms of average Wilson would be leading those starting tonight at 282 and Hernandez next to 281 in what has been a pitcher's year in the National League most of the averages are down well again med manager Davey Johnson talked about how almost every ballclub internationally improved their pitching and there you see Davey Johnson I think one of the big pluses for him as a manager is that he came from a pitching oriented ball club like the Orioles or at least an organization that has continuity from their minor-league all the way to the major league club two and one as of a couple of days ago there was only one team in the league the Pirates with a team GRA of over four runs a game and ironically the Pirates led the league in ER a last year collectively chopper it's going to be a tough play her size the wheel throw and gets it boy it really nothing so good to me [Music] you talk about a complete picture this is why is five and OH you can throw the curveball in the sinker but when you make that kind of play you're really helping yourself as usual leads off at second base and Landro moving over to right field hitting second Mar J Reynold's hitting 277 leading the regulars Pedro Guerrero is in centerfield batting fourth and then comes break rock with six homers this season Mike Scioscia is in the sixth spot doing the catching Bob bailor plays third batting seventh Dean Anderson who went to Albuquerque for rehabilitation back there is plural Hershiser striking out two and then throwing on Hernandez at the top of the inning foster Wilson and deep in the AH field Johnson at third Santana at Short back for the second Hernandez at first with Carter back of the plate and [Music] the ability to throw good strikes change speeds he has a slider and a changeup that he uses with a fastball prepared to be successful he has to get the ball over the plate and he has to keep the ball down here you see Steve sax difficult good leadoff man will take a walk high ball hitter for Lynch to get him out he's going to have to keep the ball down and maybe get him out with breaking ball Lynch does not hurt himself he's walked only 8 and 66 innings and sax takes a strike at Lynch in his last start he's been prone to Jake Eastern he gave up three runs in the first inning to the Giant and shut him off through 7 and the Mets came up with four in the eighth and they won the game then they field makes the play he's out number one one career market against tonight all three victories have come in this ballpark this year his one start resulted in a loss in fact he was matched against Hershiser a week ago Friday at Shea Stadium in that series the Dodgers won games one and two and then the Mets came back in 1 3 & 4 or you look at a guy like [Music] players primarily fastball hitter he can change beef gets behind he can still get his breaking ball over should be effective to the calendar that's rotation right now with the ace of course quite Gooden in his second year and then Ron darling who pitch Saturday in San Diego Lynch they've got Sid Fernandez and Calvin Schiraldi came off the disabled list went five innings yesterday got the win and Doug fish came out of the bullpen for the save I was talking to manager Davey Johnson I said why is that lit Lynch pitching after last year he is four and eight as a starter five and OH in the long man in the bullpen you would think that he would use him in that capacity but he said we lost Bruce for any I just had arthroscopic surgery on his shoulder and Sid Fernandez had an awful spring therefore he got a chance to start he's been doing a good job one out bases empty bottom of the first inning with no score vanyo to DeLand Roe is high you can see Gary Carter who's the best catcher he's just trying to establish the fastball on the inside part of the plate Kenny Landro and I stomach Tommy Lasorda said he just came out understand why he's not hitting a little bit better he's the type of guy that they have to get consistency out if it's worse and run put something off it and it's back down the line [Music] some play to come up with a souvenir he's got a five-dollar baseball and a $6 dry-cleaning bill want to do the couch gorgeous day near cloudless sky very mild temperature about 70 degrees tops 2/3 sealed it on the run by Johnson who throws a nod funny thing about Howard Johnson who came over from Detroit his reputation was always good hit no field and it carries defensively and hitting 154 well last year he has a really about a second year player he had 12 home runs 50 RBI was not known for his glove as you said and Davey Johnson says Sparky gave us the wrong information we thought we were getting the guy that could help us force him run but he really has done a good job for him defensively obviously they'd like to have him hit a little bit more and he is a switch hitter for all of 12 of his home runs were from the left side here's RJ Reynolds not the one who merged with Nabisco the two out of the bases empty in the bottom of first hitting it tore the gap in left [Music] those were our days you've been the hottest [Music] all the way his peak parters target right down the middle winch frozen just about where the club is but rentals who has been hot the other way that type of hitter right up the gap for a double now we'll see if Guerrero can bring event Pedro has got problems this year Pedro he's not going to earn his seven million dollar five year salary with his glove they've moved him from third back to the outfield even though he was doing a relatively capable job at third but he's going to earn his salary with a baton with RBIs and when you have only 18 and the team is near the one-third mark he's just not doing it strike one well he got that he didn't like playing Namco he prefers the outfield there's not as many bad hop I'm talking to the infield coach Monty bass so he said that Pedro has a tendency sometimes this may be just kind of relax a little bit you can do it a little bit more in the outfield 1:01 so now they've got him instead I remember the Hanuman right and in Center last year and one of the reasons he bent Ron say to Chicago a couple of years back was to move Guerrero into third and make room for Mike Marshall in right field the best one they let Garvey go Brock came in to play first is Guerrero fouls it away wanted to it's interesting in the Saint said a lot of the Dodgers fans now are saying well what happened is we got rid of the key guys at once and Lasorda's retort is hey listen we want the division to you we get rid of those fellows in 83 even though they lost the playoffs to Philadelphia but now all of a sudden Garvey's been in the World Series with San Diego that a great year with Chicago after struggling a little bit this year and Louis is having a great season thus far well there's no doubt that that players do get old I think the bottom line again is that they felt as the doctors have always been going back to Branch Rickey they have been a team that has utilized their farm system and they felt that they had good players at a minor league level just not really hasn't worked out as well as they expected those trying to find the right combination it seems every night Tommy Lasorda has different names and different positions on the line of sight and that presents a problem right there [Music] Guerrero with a single to drive and Reynolds with two out of the first inning sometimes when you make a good pitch you don't always get a good result and here you see Guerrero strong enough he goes right out on the outside corner and just loops it in the left field if you don't have his strength he can't hit the ball that way Guerrero at first and Greg Brock the batter brach missing sometimes early in the season both elbows it bothered and still second down the club and homers with thick take clove or one Lynch who gave up three runs in the first inning the other day trailing now Brock hits two home runs off Lynch at a stadium a week ago Friday do another gallon [Music] kind of an anomaly where he most left-handed hitters like the ball down in the strike zone he has very good power when you get the ball up whether it's a breaking ball or about the plate [Music] the balance Bella pitched against with Gooden couldn't got a changeup up and he powered it over the right down the right-field line for a home run breaking pitch for a strike of the countess to at one the people with the Dodgers arrived Rock everyday see him on days when they say he's just about ready we think he's there he's the player that we thought he'd be and then the next night says if it's somebody else wearing that same uniform he's been very inconsistent four three three one well I thought in Baltimore God with dr. sensei who was a fine third baseman and when you replace the guy that has almost a legend and Steve Garvey even though maybe is not a legend in the fence the Duke Snider was or Pee Wee Reese is an awfully good first baseman and still is when you have those kind of expectations it's sometimes hard to live up to full count ran through and so you can see Carter motioning to remind the infielders that the runner will be going Kimble are calling the balls and strikes with Stellos the Meuse and fremming on the bases three balls two strikes the count on Greg Brock Guerrero at first base and now Hernandez can play off the back page we'll go with a pitch with two out [Music] drifting back out of play [Music] tomorrow night is a rematch Valenzuela again good they faced each other a week ago Saturday in New York with Fernando taking the measure of the next second year man tonight's meeting a fifth of the season between these two clubs they're to a two again it almost seems like if you ever go to a Dodger game now you're going to get a good pitching matchup because their teams surround so much around pitches the mentions here at Dodger Stadium where the fences were moved in a few years back needs to be pretty good pictures Park actually moved home played out yes to be to be technicon Drysdale told me that the only reason I know that back out of play again so once more at Guerrero doing wind sprints between first and second will come back Pedro on the first 3-2 pitch that all the way around second on the second foul ball he was run about three steps of second base you know next one he was only about two thirds of the way to the bag well he has good speed when you think of homerun hitters you normally think the guys that can steal bases but he's stolen over 20 bases hit 32 home runs two years in a row had great Rock 44 home runs in San Antonio I think they don't expect a lot when you do that by the way again Guerrero gets only halfway to second base [Music] and that distance is going to decrease every time and fouls went off it's an interesting little factor in the sense that if the guy doubles on the first three to pick the runner going would have a much better chance of scoring than doubling on the fifth three into six [Music] Guerrero goes and it's all academic croc strikes out the Dodgers make-believe end of 1:1 nothing Dodgers Dodger pitcher Orel Hershiser I asked him before the game to analyze his success this season I think the biggest difference between me now and two years ago is that I'm being more aggressive with the hitters I'm going after them and then that makes them hit my pitch you'll see them swinging at pitches out of the strike zone now whereas before when I got behind an account to and on three you know they could sit on their pitch and it was the hitters pitch instead of the pitchers pitch but now I'm making them hit my pitch which is which is a ball more toward the corner and more lower than the brake zone profiles are their first inning for oral Leonard Hershiser the fourth and there's an oral v Terry [Music] perception imagine Carter get the board's Eric Carter has an unusually open stance you can get the ball away you can be successful we watched his curveball hangs on the inside part of the plate right in his wheelhouse it's kind of lines within the left lucky that ball stayed in the park a pretty good pretty good pitch to hit and I get that boy single left field George Foster who as usual takes a lot of time and like Mookie Wilson goes to the glasses now in the sunshine right they call Mookie and George Ray Charles and well it's not really not a fad apparently they did some my testing in there what their eyes are light-sensitive and therefore it in situations like this or in a game they don't see as well so they've gone to the Sun the Sun but they're not correct just to condition their eyes so they can see better and it seems to work because Mookie is having a good year and George is starting hit I think that if that girl several years ago Johnny Bench came out to a night game with the yellow glasses if you look at Foster's lack of success against Hershiser Bank was in a horrendous month where yellow tinted glasses one night in Cincinnati hit a home run and I think [Music] the glasses were back at home when I use amber clapper tonight because it Blair the new Johnny Bench bored left he tried him like that time because he was going through a terrible slump and everybody figured that he found something that would become a trend course it never did [Music] fertilizer taught at 91 on that last is treating that far in the first two innings is a 93 miles an hour [Music] bring it on the couch Broadwater [Music] and he goes after it and chops it foul three and one baby Johnson knows this team has not been scoring a whole lot of run police from out of many if you'd like him we know with a guy like George Foster to have some experience it's a good situation let him swing the order has been going with Johnson and Santana and then the picture spot it's not a bad idea [Music] long ago [Music] to get one for the first out of the second Danny he will come up he's filled with John Kristensen yesterday in San Diego though it took a while for it to be made official as French brocklander the first base umpire at signaled foul and was overruled by Eddie Montague the plate umpire as it turned out it's a perfect example where I'm fired who are supposed to work together did work together just took a while [Music] on the subject of umpires most of you probably saw the tape of tinier back to New York upset over a call dislodging a thief [Music] later on we've got the paper that if you haven't for you I know where we were sitting down there in Miami 20 more yesterday it's kind of made him feel like you ought to come back and manage again [Music] there is Darryl Strawberry his hand is still wrapped and as we mentioned earlier the Metra figuring he'll be back by the end of June his foot trails wasn't up in bottom of the second inning as Mike Joker leads off by popping up the Howard Johnson [Music] learn to control himself you know Martin and if he's depressing it's milder than the duck he's right - he couldn't quite do it I don't know what you want to call it Earl Weaver Billy Martin anybody I mean if you're an umpire obviously you don't like to see that but I enjoyed it five specially when it's the visiting managers you know it meant of the decision for your team well I think another funny thing was to get the bass out of out of the post he had asked Dave Winfield's of would you mind excuse me and move off the bag [Music] over his wally backman a scarab operator there are two away here on the second 20 on top in the West and leading Baltimore Detroit leads Seattle in the third Cleveland and Boston are tied in the third inning of the Yankees have to leave one nothing in the third over the ale [Music] Dave Anderson on the disabled list late April just got back from Albuquerque went to triple-a for a couple of weeks for rehabilitation rejoin the club yesterday and in the lineup tonight George stop [Music] still half Bill Russell he's known as the Dean here lated more games than any other Los Angeles Dodgers but Russell pretty much last year relegated to a backup role though he has played quite a bit this year because of injury [Music] the Dodgers really like Dave Anderson and his great range good throwing ability doesn't hit with power but it's a pretty good average hitter know the problem is that he has a chronic back problem series of injections which apparently alleviated the problem he's four now [Music] they're hopeful of at least getting that middle infield squared away with Jackson Anderson healthy Mariano Duncan had been claimed because of the injuries at full second and Troy in 1672 third year at her time [Music] exactly what you want to do with a pitcher coming up in two outs you know if you throw strikes tanderson you have a chance of getting him out now you have the pitcher coming up they're pinning instead of starting off next [Music] liz has made nine starts this year he has not walked more than one in any one team and it's fouled away her Tiger trying to putt for him [Music] with Steve sax on deck headland born in Brooklyn but he grew up in Miami and went to school at the University of South Carolina also has a Business Administration read-throughs degree from the University of Miami Washburn I Nana goalie Eckersley that better control and links us by the season Andy Hawkins fourth on the list right there is the man who's 110 [Music] hold on by Hernandez knocked off one nothing in the second inning [Music] [Music] you can see for yourself this pitches again I want to throw a strike right down the middle we saw her sides are helping self with a great defensive play and here he helped himself with a double first extra-base career career scoring a run [Music] who had had 12 singles in his tenure with the Dodgers picks up a double and an RBI and it's to nothing so Lynch after getting Scioscia and beta walk CA here and gives up a double to the picture feedback thumbs up [Music] and that guy's about his way well normally with histories up you play the percentages you play a shower but madura weaver always called the ocular Baltimore with two ouch the worst thing that can happen is to have the ball hit over your head George Foster playing in recently respecting a pitcher star because of statistics show you only have 12 single the ball goes over his head run Forrest [Music] Orel Hershiser seeking a six win the league we are a leader at the moment really helping himself tonight back to back with a good play on Keith Hernandez in the first inning to throw him out [Music] no pushing against the guy that's only given up one point seven runs the game already given up to pitching well the green [Music] take that gamble if you don't make your pitch doesn't like to walk people might end up walking him and then you have to take a gamble if you can get land rob is up next [Music] the attack [Music] first time for a second two down in the second inning [Music] dude I'm so late for the first time it's evening [Music] in California but they took to straight from the giant then they won two out of three from San Diego over the weekend but trailing here in the first of a three-game series with the Dodgers [Music] throughout and lambreaux takes low ball one [Music] why the center-field - LA - and the best record of the national league twenty nine and sixteen I asked Gary Carter if he felt this was the best team in the league well I'd like to think that we we are one of the best if not the best if this said you know we've gone through a lot of adversity so far we've had a lot of injuries and yet we've still been able to hold up our end of it you know our pitching has just come through outstandingly and it's been a good feeling because we haven't really been hitting that much we've been getting some timely hits and everybody has made some great contributions in a timely timely hitting he's granted best this is when they're out there we get them in they've been able to do that I'm sure is going to get a P [Music] figuring out another way to get to plug in workers Thomas that selling book or at least he tells me is best selling anyway even though he keeps giving copies away Johnson takes a 5 or 1 1 in dough on ours [Music] from Detroit [Music] taking her time [Music] well there's a pitch the line drive right back up the middle [Music] you're pitching you trying to get the glove up and if you can deflect the ball it's great but when the ball hit that hard really you want to get out of the way especially if you look at the pitchers man you can kind of see that this comes right out of the shadow right into the sunlight be very hard for Hershiser to even pick the ball up mostly a first thing he's gonna can get back [Music] we talked about orel hershiser fielding ability you saw the double also has a pretty good move and gets rid of the ball quickly which is oshi [Music] runaround beekeeping a guy from running [Music] Montreal for the Giants to Frank Williams the losing pitcher himself the game by throwing the ball away on a bunt play in the 15th inning and so the Expos who walk two out of three here over the weekend go up north and win their and the Expos the gamma D pregame back with the cup to be mine [Music] Raziel filling a hole in a way to mention problems at shortstop last year they had mosaic in so and then Ron Gardenhire who is again on the disabled list right now you be Brooke at the end of the year you'll recall they gave a job Santana did you see the play again he's been doing a pretty good job at least defensively we're not hitting as much as last year [Music] [Music] very true [Music] very close but no arguments but Harold is the third-base umpire third-base coach bud Harrelson as you look at bruce fremming and there is Harold we talked about her shockers great thinker great curveball fielding ability batting ability and also you need one particularly good pitch by an inch or two instead of being a double it's a strike who's in the position to make a better fish here and they said a second a third a one-ball two-strike count [Music] we always pause the game of inches here we see just looked like a her inside [Music] throat attacks relay to first you throw a lot of thinkers you're going to get a lot of ground balls when you have runners on you're gonna hear infield can turn them and that's something the Dodgers haven't been able to do two double plays though tonight one hopper back at second and Anderson [Music] now Michaels and Jim Palmer in Los Angeles he's in premiere of one day night baseball whose high over the past week ul Washington at 5:45 over the past week Vermont's real chili Davis and David concepción need to see RJ Reynolds who has a hit tonight a double and it scored a run who's not LaVon Hayes had a terrible week Jose are--they're the Giants getting Landro that dubious Darryl Porter got hurt over the weekend [Music] in Philadelphia what the Phillies are really having their problem Darrell Porter went on the disabled list today that will help the cart de Luci we're trying to hang in there 16 back in the who has for the moment taken over a to divert left fielder they been so much juggling and gifting you can't say permanent here has been about three games of late no one had even last year play a little bit of left a little bit of fair a little bit of right when you're inexperienced can you come to the major league it's hard enough to play one position to play all over the place but just to prevent leading to nothing in the bottom of the third rentals Guerrero and rock the three four and five in his changeup into south r.j. Reynolds is not exactly the type of guy that's going to hit a lot of home run theme right here he can feel a faith that we thought that he has ally power hit the double up the gap in left center but he can run and switch hit pretty good defensive player but again when you're playing all over the place it's really hard to develop any continuity [Music] they'll say excuse me when you play the outfit what's the difference between who playing left and right and center it's a big difference probably the easiest positions to play center if you have any kind of speed but the ball moves in different direction when you're playing left and right it does take getting used to and last year Lasorda had the guys moving around even though he had several different combinations he didn't keep them in the same position [Music] the bat winding up about 100 feet from the plate third inning and Pedro Guerrero who signaled to drive in a run fans been the end of that bat for RJ [Music] blood shows if you don't have to be overpowering to break of battle to make good pitches in that we've got the ball right out on his fist and you saw the result there [Music] want to know every time I see a bat break like that and wind up where it did before to think about Steve Yeager in 1976 tonight the Phil Russell broke his back in San Diego on the barrel that wound up in Yeager's neck away it was a serious injury but fortunately for Steve he was able to recover from it in a relatively short period of time they told him later that his life was saved by maybe happening so many of the winter said blog that his neck very close to his windpipe [Music] that was in 76 and Jaeger is still here [Music] one one thing for the gap in right-center field the second Guerrero of the devil [Music] Frank Lamas to the warning track in right-center like what you said how about the Sun very tough Dunfield go a long way to make that catch anyway [Music] Greg Brock struck out in the first inning we've linked his only strike down and they get under it and hit them in the air to shallow right field he had woken behind a make the play and there are two down with Scioscia coming up Guerrero at second those who popped out of the second inning [Music] ed went came up initially an 80 then went back to the minors at the beginning of 81 and in fact of the met to show you how many changes they made in terms of continuous service right now on the team he seconds of the 25 only rusty Staub has been there continuously longer of course had been with him and then left it in feedback in 81 [Music] in a way that's really not unusual all the things that happened in the eighties is that the turnover has been greater and faster than it's ever been for them mainly because of free agency Bill Russell I think has a most continuous service of any major league players they want Club and that's somewhere right around 15 years after I retired he became I think I was the leader [Music] not only you think the roster is being fair dal roof the teams are getting healthier in a bigger hurry than the you you can go [Music] [Music] [Music] this ABC Sports exclusive is brought to you by what life the best has a taste of its own satisfying but never filling and next week on Monday night face wall a pair of game protect your local listings the Blue Jay is going to New York c'est combien easy and the Cubs go to Olympic Stadium debate the Expo 2913 Dean's at the age of 41 wrapping up his career you can walk through all of it before he went back to Montreal briefly they [Music] well it seems like it might be a real easy job just sitting on there and just coming up to bat watch the game but we noticed he's looking right over the railing paying attention because he knows you might have to hit right off it off upper shaker okay an excellent curveball interesting all the time he has struck out five for 11 but five of the six out of it right now never found and still want to fill Wally Backman on decadently followed by Keith Hernandez one of the biggest problems the maths map is really finding the ideal leadoff man if you're a met fan he's been following their team normally wally backman leads off but he's been struggling Davey Johnson Wilson up over 600 times two years ago on the walk 18 times 27 walk last year and almost 600 times of that not the ideal leadoff man but the bat back in second and we'll forget son you're gonna feel a lot of more fastball make him a better hitter one of the reasons for the men success last year was that quit when David Johnson came up and he had managed the god water and brought back when women he moved Wally into the top five Miller hitting 280 feeling basically manager David Johnson but you're second here the pitchers learned they've been fitting back in a lot differently [Music] I'll open [Music] rookies been bothered with a shoulder problem another look at that to to pick her volley judge Smith the old American League strike the first man the other two partner and Johnson were a race on double plays wally backman Santa the first inning the perfect situation that manager David John and you have wally backman who is a left-hander can take advantage between first and second gaion first forty six stolen bases last year so we know Mookie Wilson can run probably won't run and fill their bleep one out [Music] trails to nothing back when is the only man in the league with a five hit game this year later shortened up the third Wolfen doesn't go into pictures outside one ball and one strike the count I won't make Wylie back on the stuff out is that he's a pretty good fastball there last year good power left enter not as good a breaking ball hitter and the second year in the league they the hitters and excuse me the pitchers know that they came to the sequence of pitches [Music] nine fun fun faces you talked about earlier out I moved to defense in makes it easier to hit him by him so you expected that they would change as he tried to change with him [Music] looking bluffed going and it flow ball who while he back in front within the drag variety in other words pulling the ball the right side towards the first baseman in the second baseman you're playing second base you have to cheat in a couple of steps which makes it easier also to hit the ball by the person second base on deck is Hernandez first times you doing a good job keeping Wilson close to the bag [Music] think about bowling a runner on right now at the great rock looking right into the some feel for the first baby too there goes Wilson beeping jump and a child at the play in the countdown two balls and two strikes come back whoopee with 16 fields he's been caught four times with it [Music] fairly calculated steel right there are hit and run you move the into the middle infielder cisors behind in the count 2 and 1 he's the control pitcher so you know he's most likely gonna throw a strike and most likely a fast there he goes again a good jump this time and it's all the way got a much better jump so it remains two balls and two strikes for the Dodgers on top to nothing in the fourth inning Wilson was 16 feels he's tied for fourth in the league with sensational Cardinal rookie Vince Coleman at 34 when a teammate Willie McGee is next with 20 [Music] getting wild walls even [Music] strawberry 27 stolen bases last year forget about the 1997 RBI the 23 home run command can run pretty good defensive out there well you know welcome dozen go and don't you drop the ball and turn down in Korean tea we go in here [Music] Oh nuances the game really crop up when you have this kind of situation you have a pitcher with a seed a Vienna for coming in a situation where her father certainly doesn't want to walk two batters in a row with a two-run lead you have Joseph who's cognizant of the defeat of Wilson so he's coming up in front of the umpire when you have feet it creates a lot of situations to change the complexion of the game where tribes are worrying about welcome he goes [Music] Voki at second with one away and Keith Hernandez comes up her Nana chopper over the mound and Hershiser made an extra play to throw out of the first [Music] I offer up the middle in fact no he doesn't have any play at second base see just how close it is Wally back and running all the way I'll play about a half a step [Music] now her David [Music] he's trying to get to a World Series for the second time in his career where's the rent of the e25 that's on top of me they've been on top now for almost a month Chicago Montreal hung right there and the Cardinals are trying to stay in the thick of thing [Music] again Montreal winning today so you can make it twenty nine and twenty one bit about the moment doing a handbag that's gonna come finally the way the schedule has worked out this season they've got a couple of theories coming up became so prevalent last year especially in places like the toy University of Washington rather weak wave early departed early the party leaving early I'm sure [Music] right a week wave what makes a thern in it such a good hitter I'm getting about 317 is that he had the good eye and he's run the count to three balls and one strike and Gary Carter comes up start over the home run yesterday in San Diego and he had been in the powered route [Music] Gary bothered by a lot of nagging injury he says his rib is okay right now the only that pant bothers him in Jamaica [Music] grounded toward the hall Anderson goes to sack for the 4th and Wilson goes to third MacArthur oh boy so still a good runners at first and third and and leave it up to foster Hershiser certainly has a lot of confidence his curveball last time he hung one that when he makes a good pitch brownie you see Anderson going to his right Eddie grass here in Los Angeles he knows he only has a chance for one even though Carter is not particularly Swift running down to first the one thing you want to do a situation like that make sure if one thief back certainly did that I even trying to attempt to throw to first base I think if he had made the throw was gonna walk closer than he would have anticipated George Foster is the only men who hit the ball in the air tonight he popped out of the second inning everything else has been on the ground well if the scenario stays the same this is the time when the Mets get that timely hitting to get back in this ball game with Edwin struggling somewhat you get the two gift walk something that you don't want to do [Music] routed right down to Brock so the to reload and maybe the best grandmother is the first and third Parker cannot deliver good loan away thicker ball run back a little to play put that thinking motion gets the ball on the ground break bark and right at them Dumbo's a little bit the bakthi out in the Twilight in LA it's the Dodgers two and the meant nothing here's a graphic illustrating the first five pics in today's amateur draft I know you're familiar with some of those fellas being having covered the Olympic baseball here last year BJ surhoff good looking catcher and will Clark Mississippi state I think it was somewhere around 28 home runs last year as a sophomore good-looking young left-handed power hitting outfielder first with elumen we were talking about the Eliminator that it's really hard to tell what kind of power they have but a good hitter [Music] Bob bailor to lead off in the bottom of the fourth inning [Music] bottom of the order for the doctor waiver offal one manic 205 one of those accounts two runs four hits for the Dodgers no runs two hits for the back a feeler started the oriole organization I was talking to Frank cash-in [Music] looking for a backup shortstop thought they might be able to make a deal with Al can't pass the pitch fastball middle the plate good contact hitter struck out only once last time lines it in the left field and they thought they'd make the deal just trying to pick up the salary and they could get a backup and now Kent Faddis presented a little list of their top prospect he wanted one of their best prospects for Baylor so obviously he does have some value and you thought right there line up again when you talk about permanent with the Dodgers these days three or four games illustrates permanence they learn about face the third you want a stereotype your third baseman if you want the major leagues she want a guy that can hit for power and Bobby Baylor certainly is a good player but more of a utility type player not the type of guy you want to have playing 162 games or a hundred and fifty game to third base one may know for years the Dodgers if you look at the American League California leading Baltimore in the fifth Tigers leading Seattle Cleveland and Boston a still sign of the Yankees are the three nothing lead over Oakland Dodgers had so many problems for so many years the third base in a walk and to those problems for almost a decade Texas leading Chicago and Milwaukee has deleted Kansas City but now they're right back he's trying to fill a hole [Music] so Baylor at first and Orel Hershiser who drove in double over faster the second at Augusta as much as he would like to point away now the pot I think this would be a fun situation to run late trying to pick up that extra run and Howard Johnson comes in on the grass the third [Music] and this charges from first as well as it's taken on time for one one another counts talk about your differences in the lake I'm talking to Kenny singleton who is here doing some of the next ball games played the teammate of mine in Baltimore said a national like difference of courses that you have to do a lot more pitching changes that goes with the VH you don't have that over here a lot more speed because of a stretcher and it seems like there's a lot more power hitters in the American League maybe a little bit smaller ballpark there's a balance of power has shifted you could see coming a couple of years ago the National League sort of dominated in the 70 so you get some arguments from American League people saying you know the A's were a dynasty in the early seventies and the Yankees did well in the mid seventies good for the most part most agree that nationally was the better league in Hernandez is going to question the plate umpire John Kibler about possible interference and you ask what's the difference the difference is it was interference the runner has to come back to first but it's a mile here you see Hershiser squaring around where he saw the double tonight sacrifice gets the ball down harder of course thinks he's interfering with first riser did get out of his way I'm not sure if it's really an interference call and that's what the umpire is therefore he obviously didn't think that was the case what goes there's a sacrifice this Carter makes the play on assisted and with two down Baylor is now at second rule is that you came out of be the fielder trying to pursue the ball but we went talking about things to balance right now and the American League most people who follow this flow would agree right now is probably overall the bed early and often it seems to be a relative paucity of star players in the National exam so many great stars through the late sixties and early seventies well that may be true on for San Diego has the game or artificial fields you just have to go to guys that can really run now maybe not as good a hands with their infielders the stronger aren't there's more emphasis on feet over there [Music] one left we played four Dodgers leave the next to nothing and we'll be back in one fan Julis after this message and news headlines from our local station [Music] Michels and flower at Dodger Stadium want to plug your book no doesn't mean plugging I would like to say hello a lot of my father was having a birthday in Scottsdale Arizona hello Mac hope you're watching you're not exactly a very frugal store here all right how is the book doing by the way you've got a new book coming up just came out exercise Jim Palmer's way to fitness you'll be getting a coffee because you there's a chapter a lot of chapters in there are there words in there I just wish you well in spite of what a leaseback is that there are heart words nothing [Music] want to know the count on Danny Heep [Music] Orel Hershiser delivers and it's grounded to the right side and Sachs has to throw it to her sighs there was rock it goes to the books four to one again the Mets have had only one ball in the air tonight this Hershiser has been keeping it down as usual only Foster has hit it in the air and he popped out of the second of him Ron perranoski the Dodgers 15 coach talked about his excellent thinker to go along with a changeup he throws occasionally in a great curveball did the bottom drop zone well when the bottom dropped out and ball goes down and you know all you do is hit the top half of the ball and the result of course there's a lot of grounders we could see tonight the questioning Howard Johnson singled in the third inning [Music] right field near that hammer so Land Rover initially at play [Music] and impresses me about orel hershiser you see right here at that I only think have the great curveball and there's a great fastball that as he said earlier in that interview he's been able to get the ball where he wants to even when he gets behind he's making pretty good pitches therefore you don't get a lot of the wood on the bat and he's staying pretty much on the corners throughout in a game that becoming typical in a National League this year low scoring this was the ball hit by Santana before and again the Mets didn't argue but it was fouled by how much it and that would have been a double as it turned out he subsequently hit into a double play the closest the Mets have come to a rally even though they had to been on and the fourth that hang on a couple of walks we'll set up stuck in the third situation with nobody out [Music] Dec playing they appeal get the call the first for a strike in the count [Music] so one ball in two strikes was 2 out of the bases empty in the 5th inning and the Dodgers on top to nothing when you talk about an excellent curveball you what makes it good a good curveball a good curveball Dwight Gooden has won Hershiser has won it comes up looking like a fastball with really tight spin and all the sudden it breaks [Music] where there is of course there is fire and there is some smoke from the backside of Chavez Ravine out beyond the hill beyond left field not that uncommon a sight not that it happens with great frequency but I think many of you might recall the all-star game in 1980 when they had a fire up on the hill here during the game Landro leaves off in the bottom of the fifth inning posing no threat right now that the ballpark on the back side of the hill all in one account on land row in the air to right-center field you gotta leave right on the ball [Music] a little changeup in front of it hits it off the end of the bat he said he doesn't see the ball very well and hard to get something you can't see lotta balls did you take that one step backward or the one step forward you don't catch up with him and that's the classic example there [Music] RJ Reynolds double grounded on batting 281 to run six hits for the Dodgers no runs two hits for the madmen Reynolds is around the pond it takes inside so the Florida figuring Hershiser look so good he's got a 2 nothing lead playful one more now he's thinking probably is that would certainly be enough well it has been most of the time Dodgers have the biggest offensive output of the season yesterday when they scored eight runs and had to hold on to win 87 runner goes on the hit run and it's fouled into the Mets dugout single squeeze play they go out and get a trun we should have a laugher they were fighting for their lives at the very end at the expo ended the game with runners at second and third five hits off Tom even sure who hung on to get the the feel got the win but he close got the save even though Reynolds lays out a good thought link the seals go to Hernandez Reynolds gets the sacrifice Landrieu those two scoring position with Guerrero who is singled and doubled coming up a little gingerly here well it makes an excellent punt ed Lynch has to go a long way to make the play looks like it he's running up to full capability has a great chance of beating this out but is easily thrown out at first and you can kind of see RJ Reynolds gingerly running down the first base line [Music] cilantro is a second base with one out in Pedro Guerrero who has singled and doubled bill Pedro with men in scoring position this season is hitting only 200 for a ball wanna go two hits tonight and again at the decision as the pitcher that Lynch is on the mound he knows he's already given up to run mystic barrel twice he's gotten to hit and rock out behind him twice hate to put a lot of guys on but to run may have already beaten you [Music] now he has brought coming up Pedroza and they quickened Pedroza has been a title holder longer than anybody else who is a current champion in any division the world featherweight championship it's live it's from London and you will see it Saturday on ABC's Wide World of Sports all of the Irishmen coming down the route on their man Barry McGuigan it could be a very exciting fight what another count on Greg Brock on the fifth inning Landro at second base and two down [Music] rip the right he arrived then is able to go back and take care of rock and stay in the run the Dodgers train Landro a second here in the fifth well Danny Heep getting a lot of work one of the toughest plays to make is the ball over your head make the fine running play saves the run do nothing Dodgers after five back after this from our local safety [Music] Dodgers lead the match by a score of two nothing at ed Lynch comes out Terry blocker to pinch-hit for him blocker called up from the minor isn't in the bullpen Tom Gorman is throwing so he will come in when the Dodgers bat at the bottom of the sixth talk about the free-agent draft early on Walker in 1981 was the Mets first pick and he was the fourth pick in the country overall the year before 1980 was the year that strawberry was the number one pick in the country here is blocker four years after the draft putting it back to her time Darren got on one pair one down in the sixth inning at Mookie Wilson a good manner being workout and war [Music] got a pretty good little blaze going right now back a left field [Music] the helicopters circling the area water bombardment and posing no threat at all to [Music] right over the canyon from that house [Music] welcome to struck out at a walk this can take the strike [Music] welcome talking to himself and I'm curry he's talking to himself to the Qibla can hear him but a 92 mile an hour fastball [Music] you know that they came involved every time the ball has the dirt here because infield a different kind of dirty used to be all red clay the mound now and I'm right around the batter's box is and he that spot on the ball slowly down to anything [Music] and on grass you got a signal blown away fastball he just kind of goes with it the left field I don't know if the grass is is short to help their pitching or to help their infielders because they haven't been feeling very well but you can see the throw by Dave Anderson just not in time does it come about Mookie Wilson feet from the left eye on the ball away you really get that excellent jump out of the box and you just beat the throw ball one the fact they'd want to go [Music] welcome to first phase one away in the sixth inning will be with 16 seals leading the club situation we talked about you have a guy at first it can run you're more apt to throw fastball [Music] they were there to cover but it will be an infield they go on to infield single [Music] and Keith Hernandez coming up when welcome to second back when is now at first and Hernandez has grounded out on a nice play by her time walk I've been a wise decision by Steve Dax not to throw that fall for these had problems with it throwing seems to have concurred that this season tough throw for him to make going to his left growing back even though I just said Hershiser did what he's supposed to do got over the first base in case there was a play so the Mets trying to cash in with another opportunity here in the second they have a man who leads the league in game-winning RBIs at the plate Keith Hernandez he leads with Devon [Music] [Music] [Music] bill Robinson the met batting coach talked about Vernon got three hits yesterday going down the left-field line to left-field there you see the ball just bouncing fair talk about luck I'm lucky by a about two feet if you're Hershiser of lucky for for Hernandez by about two feet and if you're a met and you're in that fan pretty good piece of hitting pretty good pitch back brilliant me too bad [Music] when Guerrera running the ball back into the infield was going on the crack of the bat and Carter is now being chased back the first is Brock has positioned himself they cut off a potential grow the best at running the first injury right about then you see Ethernet a stumble but and Harrell from the third-base coaches told him to get back situation with only one out don't want to take it down [Music] excuse me any harrelson coaching third when he somewhere doing a White Sox game but her oath in the third-base coach she has to make a decision with only one out at George Foster even though he is though for two you can see there by the graphic the guy that if they're going to course the Marathi half to him would have been closed at the plays Oh Durrell doesn't have a great arm ball wasn't hit that hard Walker who is now over 13 life diving at Versailles it comes up where the answer you're looking for the DoublePlay don't account - Dodgers - or the sick thing [Music] Salvatore the pedal a second take bone on the right side for foster but he rarely goes there [Music] take the ball picture we'll get out of a lot of trouble would be three times first times are as benefit the backside Gary Carter knowing the posture can't run that well tries to impede the effect excellent throw by sex completes the double play together all right first guys are out of the inning we're tied 2-2 in the middle of the stick [Music] this is the reaction of Keith Hernandez as George Foster hits into that double play he's had been held by Harrelson a third on a base hit on which he might have scored figuring and Harrelson thinking was only one out in foster coming up and then so much for that theory meanwhile Tom Gorman had been up in the bullpen when the next time the game they got MacDowell up and Roger who has become their big man out of the pan from the right side the rookie comes in to pitch now in the bottom of the sixth inning and what a job he has done with a sinker the man who had surgery last year and missed almost the entire season he would have been a double a Jackson in the Southern League has come up and what a fine he has been for the Mets this year well David Johnson talked about the difference between last year's met team this year's that would be the maturity of the the young pitchers but I don't think he expected Roger McDowell to come along and pitch as well as he did but he said every time he saw him in spring training he just kept impressing him great sinker you'll see the ball run and it'll dip back he doesn't have the same velocity that Orel Hershiser has but ball may even sink more than that stay in style they scored often the other night at San Diego to snap a string of 23 consecutive scoreless not good actually the run came with a Rosco on the mound even though the baserunner got there with McDowell pitching for the run was charged to Roger [Music] Zota it's cool he's got on three pictures in his run away here in the sixth inning with Baylor coming up because about the ball running and thinking that ball starts out inside catches the inside corner Scotia think that the ball inside the ball runs right back over the plate [Music] odd little flicks here orel hershiser went to Bowling Green University in Ohio last year there was 79 and then McDowell went to Bowling Green and 1980s the two pictures throw the wicked stinker both good young pitchers and both out of Bowling Green [Music] he's just trying to establish that outside corner sohcahtoa if you kind of had a lackluster 83 season the doctors went there when they did do that elbow surgery they didn't do it arthroscopically the busy national cutting he found 12 little chips a mulatto not really much pain we pitched with the day after that is destined as fantastic the Johnson who has been making those plays that season came through here where you can see the depth of Howard Johnson's playing because of Bobby Baylor's running ability to play even in front of the bag he tries to go to his right back into play for the Box goes being just can't make the play [Music] Beeler at first and in the deal in which baylor came Sid Fernandez went to the max now in the rotation very high or at least they made it seem as if they were extremely high up for him when he let him get away for the utility player you wonder [Music] first aid he saw the picture of her Nana as I said earlier he had a horrendous spring training trying to work on his breaking ball and even though he's a fastball pitcher and couldn't get either of him over but the difference between this year and last year is that he's lost 30 pounds went down the minor leagues established his fastball has come back and push grateful Sid Fernandez out of Hawaii about 22 years of age so there's a bright future for his arm holds up he was a phenom at about the same time in the minor leagues as Valenzuela came out of the team with a big splash and so they talk about the two of them simultaneously wanted own account never paying down for here again is to have a good bar club you have to have some best strength and I think the Dodgers think about a guy like Bobby Baylor he can play almost any infield position granny it's a good outfielder doesn't strike out and spray the ball around can hit and run can bunt before he had arthroscopic knee surgery last year could steal a base for you so he's a multi-purpose player on a team that they thought was going to be set [Music] wanted one down to count on the other side I've seen Roger McDowell and again we're gonna see it a great example of what's this wall thing [Music] when you get too low strike what you're doing the National League you're gonna be very effective I've never seen the man throw a breaking ball yet total method a oh yeah that kind of thinker you really don't need much of a breaking ball [Music] away one ball two strikes the count on it entire field now in case and shadowlight beginning to take effect making it somewhat easier for the hitters if you look around our producer our director chef for tea and the gang role here for our season debut of Monday Night Baseball is an Anderson fouls it away next week Toronto of the Anthony's and the Cubs and Montreal as we check out other scores finals and Houston in a game in which Nolan Ryan was the starting pitcher for nothing the Cardinals leading in the fourth inning John Tudor one-in-seven hasn't really pitched that poorly but again a victim of non-support to get a second wind you have those four runs [Music] Wow hooking back out of play Phil one ball and two strikes go Baylor at first base name still wanted to on Anderson [Music] the way that man in a Panama hat of course if you feed baseball from Dodger Stadium you know who it is with the speed gun and that dugout boxer is Mike Brito Rogers Scout Fernando Valenzuela coffee doll used to drive for an and over the ballpark and he's out there with that speed gun look for that every night [Music] bye babe two down I saw the first breaking ball on the previous pitch is slider and here you see the good thinker I think it's going to be a strike doesn't end up that way two down and Hershiser is the battery so one of the theories in the National League this year the averages are down because a lot of guys are throwing this foot finger pitch but even though the future the foot fingers variety it serves basically the same purpose well it does except it's probably a little more difficult than that they could throw a good sinker than it is a split fingered fastball the reason everybody's going on split finger fastball is because it's so easy to throw you just kind of spread your fingers instead of holding your your fingers together on the ball you kind of split them and right underneath the ball and in a normal delivery Nepal will drop first time there goes down on strikes on three fishes and stomach that will strike down the side no runs a hit they strand Baylor on to the seventh with the Dodgers in next time to to this ABC Sports exclusive is rock you vive astro brewery company Brewers of Thrones Old Milwaukee and other fine beers [Music] updated California leading in the West and leaving Baltimore 5-1 Seattle now leading Detroit 75 in the sixth inning Washington has the lead at Fenway over Cleveland and the Yankees playing really well at the Billy Martin in New York lead for nothing Texas to Chicago nothing in the fourth and Milwaukee three Kansas City won one National League final Montreal this afternoon in 15 beat San Francisco 42 seventh inning is Danny Heep over to grounded into a double play and grounded out comes up hitting 271 from Hershiser been talking to Davey Johnson the manager of the myth this is the perfect illustration he would prefer to have a guy like Danny Heep a veteran player that's been around a couple years ago in 83 hit there you see Davey Johnson the manager than that came off the bench at 80 great for home run he'd rather have him on the bench so he could use him late in the ballgame and have strawberry out there on a regular basis now he's got a platoon of third base with night Howard Johnson in right field with John Christmas Danny Heep who we see here three another count great night on the bench today by the way but there's a man who became a little wealthier yesterday he's married to Nancy Lopez Minh despite a two-stroke penalty the other day she won the LPGA open [Music] there was a spring to a step when it came back Davey Johnson was a pretty good golfer said there's no way that Nancy Lopez could beat me got her back on the championship fees and she still won Danny three walks given up by her gonna get an allowance rate this week come out on the west coast win four out of five games for the Metro turn on the tube and see your wife's making all kinds of birdie putts Danny Heep sitting to run home runs Carter hit a two-run home run what a day what did he Hyundai Steve's in first place but you're still on the banks because this man's in there tonight Howard Johnson single dissenter fly to right 160 and up there to bunt punting foul with Baylor and Rockville charge again because I think something important to note that the myth of course were in first place most elastomer and I've made a great run had a to gain lead in the playoff only lose with the last three ballgames it's going to be a good race and as I said in the pregame show and with Montreal with their good young pitching and some good speed and Bob Rogers doing a good job up there along with st. Louis it's gonna be a good divisional race better than most people expected excuse me - thanks Don Jackson if he can't get this one down [Music] looks like he's bunting for a base death and decides to ball as the ball but it's called a strike on two now Baylor backing up and playing even with a bag of her with two strikes [Music] oh it killed a bet Blackbeard you it was that two-week stretch in the middle of the summer when they walk is there we caught seven out of eight to the Cubs after winning the first game of the series comes life to my seventh straight man as we said before those two teams have yet to meet 15 but upcoming or halt my home series in the middle of the month [Music] should be interesting Rick Sutcliffe push to go out with a torn hamstring [Music] the USFL Birmingham trying to stay in first with trailing Houston 2120 tonight of the third check swing did he come around they appeal and it's strike three from the third base umpire bruce fremming making before and if it look like judgment came around well you can judge for yourself if the back goes out in front of home plate it's a strike see the good little curveball oh yeah to me that it was way out in front of home plate mike scoscia we talked about its ability earlier in the first inning early in the game about blocking pitches with a guy like Hershiser has that biting curveball get a lot of work out at the catcher going in the dirt and blocking ball put a nice job there call of a goalie I like that dream well because her shine there was a hockey player he used to play for the Philadelphia Flyers junior a team so it's an appropriate description here [Music] that man has a pretty good curl and he's got a pretty good okay fast-flowing you name it and grateful location white Gooden writer asked me today can you father him great I pick him up tell you what everything you've done it's been great I guess runner goes much of a jump to throw down on a second [Applause] [Music] almost double it is well and still go the throat easily in time Steve stacks all he has to do is put the glove down most likely hit and run or a run and hit and if you're Danny Heep you're anticipating Santana to make contact which he didn't do miss the curveball doesn't make contact here the counters what to do I love would buy tableau said when somebody asked him the other day about quite good and he summed it up in one word bonafide [Music] for the best get the leadoff man on but nothing doing it kills two sewers designers from up in the fire above the seven Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles Al Michaels and Jim Palmer with you if we go to the bottom of the seventh inning - two times Steve sax 10 Landro and RJ Reynolds against the reliever Roger McDowell right foot back the count is going one beam has grounded out walked flying out batting 240 the homers and five runs batted in [Music] how about this for a theory and why he is happy that he's starting out slowly last year he got off to a great start he said it was very nerve-wracking to try to hit 300 so this year he's going to start off a little bit more slowly and come up instead of going down the problem came up in 82 and actually took over davey lopes food job and then two years ago they had that mysterious early probably could not make the routine go in for a space when played here there we go I think they're proving Jackson Hole for McDowell have come on strikeouts at all on the secret once again I sound like a broken record you just see the thicker diving and again if you're Steve sax you think the ball is gonna stay up you just can't believe the ball it's going to think that much and it does so sacks who wants to be remembered to his niece celebrating a birthday in Sacramento today is out number one here in the bottom of the seventh inning in Tim land Pro is the banner right [Music] McDowell's brain up there with dispatch as well as the gun is clocking him with a lovely meal that last pitch would move out of a 91 90 fill I did throw a second breaking ball wonder why you'd even throw a breaking ball when you have a sinker that's that outstanding [Music] wanted to in the first inning Guerrero drove in Reynolds and then in the second inning Hershiser doubled over Foster's head it stayed - nothing LA until the 6th when Wilson and Backman got a Bourdon infield singles and Hernandez poked one down the line and left to drive into and right now we're the bottom of the seventh inning with one out of the bases at the end on using the best i-22 a particular predictable type of game to actually hitting bugs or excuse me fishing clubs and struggling for runks and that's been the case all night he's a grounder through wally backman before almost a typical National League game nationally batting Hodges this season at this point 242 with his exceptionally low frame of reference last year 255 there's Jesse Orosco throwing in the Mets bullpen with McDowell due to lead off on New York back to the top of the eighth Reynolds doubles grounded out and sacrifice [Music] wanted Oh Tommy Lasorda with Monty Pascal in the background in the 28 years in LA I've had only two managers role her often up to 76 and Sir Thomas Ewok and of course to Lasorda's office and it's adorned with hundreds of photos the Tommy's office he has a Sinatra wall he has a Rickey wall for the Dodgers are in playing this year but I really need to do whaling [Music] are you on at all good one yeah but if the picture is turned around [Music] you're on the wall right place underneath the both of the puppies [Music] going through the cows [Music] I told him I was gonna send him an exercise book after he gave me a copy copy of The Artful Dodger I started reading it last night fell immediately to sleep you gotta work hard get an education that's what worked for him not that well this year but he's going to winning McDowell has struck out five [Music] Dodgers make a change at second base Mariano Duncan who is the second youngest player in the National League comes in defensively and Clint Hurdle comes up to bat for McDowell in the top of the eighth in the game tied 2-2 the fax is on Duncan his in and McDowell is out which is a blessing for the Dodgers is he struck out five and two innings and hurdle the one time Kansas City phenom and backup catcher for the Mets hits a grounder down is Duncan you're gonna run away okay let the jewelry called Jim is a fielder first baseman up into character again another cases a lot of expectations with young looking ballplayer but didn't really have a power wasn't a great outfielder even though he has hit over 20 home runs as last couple years in the minor leagues it really it doesn't have that quick of that we came to catch up really found out that he couldn't be an outfielder and what's going to get to the major leagues and tried to catch and here he is back in the big leagues I know as a second or third boki Wilson here to right field and panel and row is right there very quickly two down here in the eighth inning tonight giving up six hits and four of them came consecutively in the sixth inning he's been spotty with his controlled walking three out three he made three pretty good pitches to infield hit in the looper by Hernandez a bad pitch really one out of the four hits with the bad food choices then income in that good stuff on pre-wash is more than he liked it to give up what again is most pitchers try to do what you want to do is go out there and keep your club in the ballgame and he's done that Hershiser has not been beaten since last season he's five and O this year [Music] was that 30 major league starts and six women shut up so you can kind of get an idea of what kind of quality pitching he's done one is last ray decisions last season and his last loss was last September the 9th so he's won eight in a row [Music] one ball and two strikes account lifted in the air to right-center field Guerrero and two to back in what they protected expected the news headlines from all over the state Jesse Orosco is for some question about his elbow because he went a week and a half without pitching and then came out of the bullpen finally on Saturday night to get the final two outs of the victory at San Diego so Orosco for the second time in almost two weeks comes in to pitch tonight and he's a very key man of course where the matches he proved last year California in the 8th fleets Baltimore Seattle leading the tiger is in the seventh Boston trying to hold on at Fenway and the Yankees have stretched their lead against the Chicago and Texas they're tied in the 6th in Milwaukee in Kansas City a rain delay in the fourth with Milwaukee with you stand for nothing in the fourth [Music] we all beat the Giants before - in 15 innings here due to bottle Iain Pedro Guerrero Greg Brock Mike Scioscia against Jesse Orosco what a job on McDowell se7 name gave of one single no walks struck out five [Music] only gives manager Davy Jones a lot of flexibility you can get him to a situation where he can use just the Orosco he talked about his arm overpowering fastball great platter 31 days last year to go along with it six records didn't use them really that 10-day period because he said he didn't match up against the other teams but I think maybe he wasn't really calling as the truth when you don't use your eighth reliever for ten days you aren't telling the crew they believe you got to get him into work there's McDowell fill with the freshness of a rookie a guy who does his job and doesn't go back to the clubhouse he's still only thanks to wait the outcome of the game Sparky Anderson said though the Earl Weaver at the time of these sorters they can't go out there and pitch and run and hit me guys excellent - all right on the outside corner you need guys that are going to go out there and do the job for him you can bring up with young kid like Roger McDowell and he can pitch like he did tonight he's got to give you a pretty good feeling pretty confident field and Johnson was given another good feeling yesterday as the change misses low and duck fish such pouring at San Diego to the extent that he was farmed out earlier this and came back and now if this can come around again with this in a Roscoe and McDowell they're going to be devastating out of the bullpen [Music] Guerrero hit the flyball to centerfield and it's milky will taking care of Pedro for out number one [Music] Roscoe averaging almost a strike in operating 24 days in 24 and 2/3 goes to work now on Greg Brock well he has that good fastball and you can get behind a guy like Guerrero with a good fastball hitter and when you have that confidence that comes with good stuff you can go right after but he did and he popped the center bill want to know on Brock [Music] second on the club and Homer is his Greg was six Mike Marshall out of the lineup tonight because of a shoulder injury leads the Dodgers in home runs with a divers are hitting home runs this season with most of them of the bases empty right it counted one and one Niger's always seem to be at or near the top of the league when he comes to hitting homeruns because they have not been coming at propitious time this year rock fouling into the plate when you're leading hitters hitting 277 [Music] in spite of what Tommy Lasorda said about not hitting in such situations they just aren't getting a lot of runners on and also when you struggle and you're not scoring runs you may be steel and hitting row a little bit more which again puts you in situations where you maybe take some guys off the bases Louis team batting averages right there from the bottom up giant 217 and in the mix and in the Dodgers with a dick shows you that the match - doing it well they add too [Music] the kitchen is in superb feel the ball into Frank Rizzo if you look at that list of the bat [Music] the most would be the cup p38 and a hitter's ballpark yeah even with everybody in a crumpet are to believe they're down that low every Dean for it was that suppose you could get a year where the wind does blow in and anytime you see a 2 2 1 or 1 nothing 400 we filled you know the wind was blowing absolutely territory partner had the [Music] now the two can enjoy a smile right here kill her big man tough room to vacate well so he doesn't know where the ball is either Carter does hi mr. Kibler thank you and then he goes and gets the ball on a foul territory right behind home plate here but you can see Gary Carter not taking his eyes off the ball has time to get to it and with authority makes the catch [Music] dear soldier we were discussing the dr. homers this year they hit 34 and 27 of them have some of the bases empty only two three run home runs both by Greg Brock he just popped up I have a theory I know that when I get a couple of guys on you just make better pitches or at least you try to [Music] a lot of guys will be good hitters in Philly against runners in scoring position and then the pitchers bear down it makes a little bit more difficult to get those [Music] two balls and no strikes again that's ripped in the center for a base in the lead runners at first base with [Music] you have to all run this year but not all right the nut off his bat for him a striker they didn't wanna walk better pitch the hip and when you have a guy like Bobby Baylor even though he is not a home run hitter type of guy you want to pitch to looks like he's gonna keep the ball in the ballpark Baylor has grounded out and singled twice he is two for three comes up adding to 44 if you're thinking about Baylor's anyone out you might as well forget it he said one home run in the last four years [Music] [Music] with Anderson on deck so she had first base let's be no idea how intense Bobby Baylor could be when he plays by pitching in spring training last year had the Dodgers down 12 to nothing he's playing shortstop dives for ball dislocated shoulder with come up to the ball big break for the doggy and Baylor pulled a hamstring or at least read it as he went to have a line manny mota comes over to check it out and bill Bueller will also lend some assistance to Roger trainer as Bader winds up reaching on the game's first error an error on Santana and the Dodgers will have runners at first and second and Anderson due to come up we're not gonna see a twin with much authority a good slider lowing in he may have pulled it right here or right there when he stumbled I don't think Santana could have made the play the slow grass he knows he has to hurry when again we'll throw them out with a full mastering but under normal situations no way [Music] to take the peak and of course for the diners not playing particularly well when coming off of some 500 season last year a little bit of the bloom is off the Rose if it would be with any manager and was sort of here's his share a cat fall Sally would like to keep Baylor in the game if he can you've already taken sax off he has Marshall hurt he certainly can't San Diego at the pinch runner doesn't want to at this point [Music] but he may not have a choice I think he's mimicking Bill Russell and that too it will be so Russell will come out and in fact Rocco is going to go to second base to run for Scotia is it Sid Bream who will come out or maybe the picture Bobby casino on that tool will be it's Bobby Castillo who comes out the pinch run at first Cathy oh who was the starting and winning picture yesterday against Montreal is a runner at first probably ties a record for low simultaneous pinch runner isn't a game new in a tomb and Casey you're running at first [Music] we probably leave rustle in the game [Music] do I have to on [Music] in the top of the building Russell should stay in the game bill was it at first you got a lot of ways to go on hesitating after where he's going to put Russell he still has an handicap abandoned to the third he could lose Duncan over too short to name it in a second he could bring Guerrero in to play third and put Russell instead everyone I love the way to see we get that belly place [Music] two balls no strikes account [Music] [Music] that for three and they afield and don't get the call at first base Oh Hershiser he's on deck the Dodgers have Marshall on the backs of Marshalls hit but he keeps grow when they told a problem he is the most likely picture and if you brought to walk here [Music] destroying [Music] three balls one strike the count with Russell a second and Casteel at first Syl canal already to be going once again you've got a good fastball green one went right but you can do that when you're throwing around 91 miles per hour what's interesting is the way Carter looked the day man and you can see he'll flash the time and then it'll look up at the batter Dave Anderson to kind of see if he's looking Oropeza there you see him looking right now and the big ball four so Anderson grunting second one for our children come out of the dugout the bass will Orel Hershiser getting started innocently enough with a flyball and a hostile for two but they're the single they are white bark and leaves the total homers comes up [Music] Mike Marco big strong right-handed hitter 2:57 21 home runs 85 RBIs last year but have the tendency to strike out shut it down and strike got struck out over a hundred times two years ago only 93 times out here I want to get them out you want to come up up and in on them you get the ball out over the plate we talked about his shoulder problem Jim I asked Lasorda they sent mark to up yesterday in an obvious intentional walk situation tommy said watery with that mic really couldn't swing the bat or throw a shot when the FBI [Music] well of course Montreal there [Music] inside fact they've had a couple situations where the place to go and you can see farter right there jumping in grouping out cooling and that's death to the God [Music] as they leave the bases loaded and onto the night we go to back we want to note the passing today is car Lindemann a good friend of many of us in this business spent a number of years of NBC Sports greatly involved with baseball coverage there and other events through the years and then on to CBS Sports where it was vice president and assistant to the president of CBS sports car Lindemann dying at the age of 62 and the family of Carl I know for many of us here at ABC sports our deepest sympathy a good good man [Music] and Howell comes in to pitch for the Dodgers as we go to the ninth inning and the Dodgers make a lot of changes because of the pinch running and pinch-hitting situation Steve Yeager to do the catch new battery and Bill Russell stays in the game with Keith Hernandez coming up Russell is now the shortstop and Dave Anderson goes to third [Music] in 30 innings as struck out warding but he's had control trouble he's walked 18 the leg here walking about one man every 10 inning 51 innings last year phenomenal has always had a history of being wild and of course the only five the unintentional walk 94 mile-per-hour fastball right there he's got a live arm basically a hard slider to go along with it but only throws that when he get the head like the picture that comes right after you the fact there's been a lot of speculation where we see the errant throw by Steve Yeager really matter much but a lot of speculation with pitching as well as he did last year in the Dodgers needing a third base when there was talk of trading calm need from Kara who is the other short man to Boston four-way box that's been a trade that's been handed around where she hasn't been consistent this year can't walk a lot of guys if you're a short man Paulie did that come right back with a good breaking ball boy he is a big man from the sort of this year he's gotten even fewer then you've got speed now coming back and if you're wondering out how is doing I guess the best way to someone over the okay he needs a left field for a base okay would be applicable what he's doing with how is he's using it from time to time he really hasn't brought him into that many key situations with a game on the line yeah a very similar effects to the one that Hernandez did down left the old line for a double bass fall out over the plate just punched it into left field [Music] Carter tonight with a couple of singles comes up batting 248 six homers and 24 RBIs [Music] we talked about that open stance now one of the reasons he has that open stance is getting a lot of problems you talked about the broken ribs but he's had a lot of knee problems over here when he does open his dance it takes a lot of pressure off his knees unfortunately it does on Orthodox stance going through the county Boston holds on beat Cleveland oil cane is now six and four and seven complete games for him [Music] one ball two strikes [Music] you see the two strikes he goes with a break of almost pants belt Steve Yeager balls moving [Music] and playable in South territory for Greg Brock her name is still approaching one away now and it'll bring up foster when the Tigers come up in the bottom oh nine thing they go to the top of the order which is occupied now by Mariano Duncan and kid Landro a large a rental Walker hit into a double play to end the mint rally in the 630 they'd already scored twice and had runners at first and third and you talk about key plays in the game or key decisions right now you go back to bud Harrelson stopping Keith Hernandez from scoring from second on Gary Carter signal when her name has been rounded third and bud put out the shaft I'm figuring foster was coming up next we went out in the man a third George could be able to bring in but he hit into a double fluffy and had the plate umpire John Kibler will define the batter's box your father well George probably heard that came out throwing 94 miles per hour I might as well get back as far as I can where it is no stranger to taking a lot of time making the picture wait and so this is sort of par for the course [Music] gamma left field Russell to down her name is Phyllis her he comes up the breaks you get when you get a leadoff runner with your fourth and fifth hitters coming up nanus gets on in most situations you get a leadoff runner on in the ninth inning he'd bought them over put them in scoring position but with Carter and block for coming up [Music] Gary Cooper has ever had to buy they want to pressure off picture if you make good pitches and they'll be able to do that tremendous jump for Hernandez where the base stolen by a mile as he fouls it away these are Nana's was half wait a second and that's it came to the plate stolen they turns around the child off his first I could have scored on that single now I have second base going she go back to that single and Bobby Valentine who's now managing the Texas Rangers known for his aggressiveness never know he might offend him first up you the third-base coach and you are bud Harrelson you don't have the luxury of maybe knowing that George Foster was over 13 on orel hershiser so that's what makes third-base coach a very important part of a boffo one in one account [Music] retrospect they have a guy like Hernandez not particularly fast but and those were the office dealers of playing he knows how the ball was hit he certainly felt that he could score on the ball the runner you have to obey the third-base coach if for ABC were why are the third-base coach Mike Ferraro 1980 that was the classic shot a Steinbrenner getting up and throwing his arms up and disgust [Music] and it was I guess my Willie Randolph that thrown out at the plate [Music] for bigger things in a game eighteen players the next number of sub that the biggest decision of the night was made by the third-base coach at least at the moment the thief right feel way back [Music] disputed all run 40 which went right down the line but no doubt about this one [Music] one picture there last well Kenny Howell may have been worrying about the runner Hernandez at first throw a low fastball to a low fastball hitter funny thing about this game baseball last year he only hit one home daizy's it too Johnson takes a strike you saw Darryl Strawberry one of the first to come over to congratulate Oh is he playing because flubber research he's doing a big ban the last couple of days for him rounded down - Brock / - how old but the damage done here in the ninth inning the single by her name is in the homer by Heath and we will go to the bottom tonight in LA with the Mets now leading fortitude be with us Saturday live from London WBA world featherweight championship Eusebio Pedroza hotel the title for a long time longer than any other champion against Barry neck Wigan on ABC's Wide World of Sports it should be a beauty this Saturday Mets four Dodgers two Al Michaels and Jim Palmer in LA as we go to the bottom of the ninth inning in Mariano Duncan [Music] Mariano Duncan is still flying around the bases but now they tell Wilson looked like he was on his way to catching up with it but it just kept on failing so it's a double for Duncan trying to come back here in the bottom of the ninth-inning you see Willie Mookie Wilson on his horse thinks he has the ball there earlier al about joggers usually is that lead the nationally at home run breathing as the ball carries very well here he said it looked like Wilson thought he could catch the ball but it just you can see it here and just vary a little bit too far down in trouble and Afghani Maldonado comes up to hit for land roll in the bottom of the ninth inning Lasorda for the percentages and goes to the right-handed if it stays in the ballpark the broken falling down at the chance maybe a maybe even inside the Parker home on even though with the two-run deficit almost have to be sure before you send a guy [Music] he's been hired in a latest month this is one of the guys that call me the third has talked about he was talking about before the game a tendency when you have players to play at Albuquerque where the error is verified uppercutting on the ball trying to hit that fly ball to take advantage of the short porch of the way the ball cars in the air to right-center field but very playable for Wilton [Music] Maldonado still mired in a becomes the first time in the bottom of these and it brings up the leftfielder r.j. Reynolds pretty good pitch to do been digging slider up in the strike zone but he just got [Music] by day Reynolds scored the first Dodger runnin the first inning that I drew scoring single runs in the first and second and led to nothing through five and that's getting to the six and heaps home run tonight breaking it for - that's where we stand right now they feel back before the - I'm late [Music] [Applause] [Music] right over the head of deed and he can't make the cash and a few ground rules over [Applause] tricking them here in the final ninth-inning [Applause] Reynolds at second base and he wants to talk to going off the car you see Danny quickly began and the ball just over his love [Music] another ball it could have gone for triple cat damn [Applause] I think what r.j. Reynolds is talking to Joe Amalfitano about is that he saw him limper we were in the game his lake may still be bothering the Dodgers are very thin on the banks right now [Applause] reto stays in with the tying run at second base and one out and Guerrero before [Applause] [Music] that in crock Reynolds a second [Music] you want up there good advocate got your ass on the hill [Music] so at this point if Johnson had his brothers I think he might like to have McDowell which the four innings are I would think they would have him open this one for yesterday McDowell pitch to tonight and Orosco is trying to save it and it's a struggle one ball and one strike in the bullpen their back damaged joe sambito who was up [Applause] injury [Applause] [Music] see [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] hurting Baffert rolled down by we filled well just the Orosco chooses to go with his third pitch looks like a little bit of a team [Music] what a run now at first he is hitless tonight batting 349 [Music] [Applause] grab it for the hole and - scoops it up throws him out good play winning run is now at second so they get to pick out what makes us the tough plastic if you want to get his glove in the ball [Music] going as far as you can to his left set up two outs first Guerrero does room into scoring position at second base enjoy if you want to pinch the rustlers where does he want to fit into the game [Music] well Yeager's five for 40 Russell sitting to 66 and Russell sitting 400 with men in scoring position and Johnson has a computer an accent Oh [Music] even though you do have a computer Rena we you can have the same thing anytime sprint into his office in the seventh and eighth inning because you don't take him out on the bench with it unless you have a Mandy he has no way of knowing Guerrero is a second the winning run oh and on the couch the 4/4 I as each team is scored twice here in the lengthening breaking ticket side and it's going to more important computer readout with illustrate now bill Russell hits Jesse Orosco because Orosco this ending is any indication is not on the top of his game has gotten his sliders in his fast close up in the strike zone which he can't afford to do I don't care how hard you throw he's not making quality pitches even though he does [Music] I think that would be a better indication [Applause] Joe certainly note [Music] what boss he thanks again you do have elbow problems you're just able to stamp off the hard breaking ball and when you have full extension on the basketball which maybe makes a difference between the ball moving and not the elbow sometimes inhibit you from doing that popped up down the line to foul territory across Turkey get there still a ball of two strikes so they have obviously opted to work on Russell list by the bank he's having a a better year than Jaeger [Applause] throughout winning run at second four-four time a night first in this situation now Carter Hey let's pitch the replica let's make it with our v if we don't then maybe we'll you go with power syllable through things [Music] we talked about Orosco getting his pitches up here you see the good slider breaking down in the strike zone he'll rough the way out in front of it [Music] [Applause] even tsuzuku [Music] it just goes to show that there's no guarantees in this game get a coupon lady her manager Davey Johnson and have your ace gonna go [Music] in it a lot [Applause] Guerrero goes and ruffles fouls it away Lord Pei about potentially Pedro affinity was a good play if you get the third baseman to move like Howard Johnson did but it really you're really not even gonna make up throw to third base most likely [Music] go to move and he hit the ground ball where you were standing you've done exactly what you accomplished or tried to accomplish fielder would probably just hold his ground and but never film basically he's not a whole lot of difference other than a wild fish man on third pops it up it looks like we're going to go to the camp Santana the grass and onyx paintings we go as the doctors just sue in the night and at the end of nine were done for for back after this message and a word from our local station in one error that I chose four runs eleven hits and no errors Dodgers scored in the first Guerrero driving in Reynolds vs. it was a double in the second ending to make it to nothing and then the Mets got a couple on Hernandez's double after two infield singles in the sixth inning he hit a two-run homer in the ninth to make it 4-2 but that came the Dodgers as Reynolds drove in run three and Guerrero Grove in the fourth run with a bases so to the 10th and Rafael Santana to lead off for the Mets candy Maldonado stays in the game in right field for LA strike two Santana with Kelvin Chapman out on deck to bat for Orosco [Music] wanted one [Music] [Music] Fleiss - right Maldonado running high but it drops untouched one ball and two strikes the count [Music] so Santana the number 8 hitter and then Chapman to bat for Orosco next followed by Mookie Wilson Dodgers in the bottom of the 10th down to the bottom of the order with the ager Anderson and in the pitchers spot go to [Music] [Music] no two and two on Sanatana in the College World Series final score Mississippi State beat Arkansas by four [Music] which sports here for the Razorbacks on the NCAA track championship last week track and field Danika third and on the run wrong about is Anderson one down and Kelvin Chapman comes up USFL Birmingham now leads Houston in the fourth three at twenty nine to twenty one Chapman who platoons when Wally Backman comes up well there's 194 average refrain into pinch-hitter John Gorman who was up early on he was up in the fifth inning in the bullpen he's up again in the 10th so we'll see him next week Toronto and the ink region the Cubs Montreal my two games on Monday baseball good to be back our statistician Alan Ross Steve hurt one of the fry offers of the alliance baseball analyst a terrific book dividing the graph one Kelvin Japanese no Agartha benefited from Davey Johnson Rhys I get to become the manager of the myths play for him in 83 inside water good year had a shoulder injury went to spring training Devi talked them into staying around they could use them as a platoon where you're set from Tunes with Wally back from his second base hit 289 last year at a fine here better mr. arrow taking good go away Mookie Wilson will come up with blanks tonight with a walk and a single 1 for 3 [Music] Wilson batting 283 Cubs are off today Montreal one [Music] that's beginning the day - on top [Music] quickly or do so it comes own seem to be a game in a hand for two and a half back Montreal will either be two or three back now brought the last one up at 94 grounded toward the middle and fielded by the bean ruffle who throws and get as the first baseman Brock things on the bag after a long book by Stella [Music] as Wilson still has a say here in the 10th inning we see the low throw here bra catches the ball looks like he has him by about a half a step that comes off the bag rather quickly we did what bill Robinson was upset about back in LA after this from our local stations [Music] the left-hander's Tom Gorman who is three-in-one this season comes out of the New York bullpen normally a middle man and he was up as a middle man tonight and then the next time the game in the sixth inning and they opted for McDowell he comes on as the late man because they've already used McDowell they've already used Orosco and cysts fixed warnings yesterday so Gorman inherits it right now in the bottom of the 10th inning with the game tied 4-4 and the bottom of the dive of order with Jager and Anderson [Music] after the top of the ninth inning run the parking lot now listen on radio on a freeway game tied for for the bottom of attachment jagger pacified not exactly overpowering fastball slider but his best pitches his forkball he throws about six different speeds makes him very effective before kind of goes up to home plate not as quick as it split finger fastball and just kind of six weeks it's the most [Music] see Hagin came up hitting 125 power Johnson the third baseman for the man what you're doing late innings you don't want to ball hit to your right for a double all roles in the left-field now Anderson comes up probably to bunt one problem for the Dodgers right now are one thing that doesn't help a whole lot anyway is that Yeager is very slow and they don't have another character so he has to stay in the game ringerman coming off that broken leg spent four months on crutches in a cast couple screws in his leg right now a souvenir for the late season collision with dan concepción the sip green fold up from the minors recently coming up the pinch hit next oh and one the count Anderson whooping foul we miss is a fun and then fouls one away with our game running over our allotted time parade a reminder that assuming this one is ever will have your late local news and then Nightline Yankees beat Oakland 5 to 2 as Phil Niekro in the 7th over Chris Connor Rowley and Ricky Henderson homers against his ex-mate and Dave Kingman homers he gets his ex things both played briefly with the Yankee is that number 2:31 not setting to the other dugout tonight is closing in on 300 lady get down with two strikes and Gorman throws him out at first so he said it's a tough way got two strikes on him and then the sacrifice and now Sid green comes up with Jaeger at second base [Music] Green was up last year he's a first baseman [Music] two strike bunt first off Dave Anika wanna do is get it anywhere in ferret territory even though it's hard to move a guy like Yeager that doesn't run well over [Music] breem was six hits this season he's batting 122 but three of the hit seven homers [Music] what at all [Applause] [Music] a yo-yo the type of guy that will probably be sent back when Oliver comes off the disabled list or Jay Johnstone the whole pathway right away Birmingham holds up effusive by two instead missing a two-point conversion at the end of the game [Music] one ball two strikes the count on three Duncan is on deck C in Dodgers get up to that 500 mark filling in 24 25 San Diego beating Philadelphia tonight doctors four and a half back Dave Johnson's team trying to stretch its lead to two and a half over the cup babe time for four green misses on the ground of her name is the winning run will go to third and there are two down Jagr now a third and Duncan will be the batter neither one of those situations with first down second base with two outs winning run on third base how do you pitch do Duncan hitting right-handed at 3:26 I really want to pitch to Maldonado is Dec we go for 24 no fear that they are going to might be one of those situations where you make your picture you've welcome the air hurling toward the line and right in the south bound to make the catch those Danny descended to the 11th inning as the winning run died 2/3 to 10 men for doctors for or for tie as we go to the 11th inning at Dodger Stadium for the Dodgers Steve house comes in to pitch the well follicles see how who's walked in with such a splash having a sensational walk a year in 1980 quickly became the age to the bullpen and all of a sudden in 1983 cocaine abuse suspended and then following the season suspended from baseball for a year by Commissioner Bowie Kuhn for with your rehabilitation and then had to undergo elbow surgery in January of this year so he's coming back from a number of problems and as we said before the sword has been spotting him he's been pitching fairly well but needy fewer has really been the key guy out of the bullpen and how old as well but now how comes in here in the 11th inning [Music] wally backman who rarely gets to hit right-handed turns around here this what you it drives the butters way on on Fernandes is on deck and then it'll see Gary Carter [Music] you talk to Ron here mark pressive is the bullpen catcher for the Dodgers they say that Steve Howe is about 90% back as trouble getting loose if he does happen when I'm up two nights in a row or two days in a row amazing that in the years pass that he would have such great and there you see Ron perranoski the daughter and he'd have such great stuff the ball would move but since the the transposition three routing of the older it hasn't quite been the same first he came back very quickly [Music] pitching staff one ball two strikes account now pitch yesterday early when two innings gave up one run [Music] the ball and two strikes first that one run could have been avoided first and third one out for God check the runner on third we really could have had him pop down and run down the didn't chose to go to second and almost got Mariano Duncan killed there with a horseplay and didn't get the double play and the run scored [Music] play like that of course it's not scored in Arabi as you do get the chorus from the divers to their fourth consecutive game without an error fielding has really been desperately up until as fact weaken 62 [Music] for talking the money basket over with me the years he just said - how about he can talk about the physical eras they're well chronicled form you can read about does in the box goes out by the double-plays we don't turn they are captive audience so too until [Music] make Steve house so effective is that he has great stuff can also throws a lot of strikes [Music] the pitcher really whether you're starting or you're leaving [Music] gradient tool on the leadoff man while first time who started what 8 & Howell [Music] the creation working tonight it's why the Center for a base hit and a go-ahead run is aboard a leadoff single by wally backman 145 lifetime against left-handers we talk about throwing strikes but don't want to go 3 to 2 leadoff batter good you don't want to walk them took a little bit off Backman singles up the middle [Music] Hernandez grounded out walked doubled single [Music] first if you're sitting at home you're wondering if Keith Hernandez be bunting at the situation you like to get a runner in scoring position but then again if you do that you walk harder most likely pitch the posture a bad situation the wait-and-see they send the runner on the hit and run and he fouls it away on one so that's what Johnson on right well it's another alternative Keith Hernandez does not swing it a lot of a lot of bad pitches but he is a good contact hitter can get the bat on the ball back in when you do send the runner what you do is in essence you get your middle infielders to move a little bit creating a maybe an extra hole it might not normally be there we'd all be wondering what he's talking to Gary Carter by saying what are what is that it runs time what is it I've never done it off this year [Music] sure he knows no fun [Music] [Music] semi pick shot Jaeger moved out as if it was a picked up and stop woman one 8:24 here at Dodger Stadium to the game now about 3 hours and 15 minutes old and following our game stay tuned for your late local news and then Nightline coming your way live interview with Patrick Buchanan first live interview with from the president's staff with Ted Koppel coming up when it's easy to say from up here well if your key thrown in you do hang in there the one thing he does against left-handed pitchers you see the ball just run a little bit back as you said it's not that close but a lot closer if you're down on the field [Music] Sammy Stewart wins inand Donnie Moore gets beaten as Baltimore takes scary California dr. sensei off to the sample list similar back problems to what Dave Anderson without playing third base the divers not a lot of fun to look forward to if those had the number of well he has had a chronic back problem I think that's one of the reasons that was created over to California for Danny for a little bit suspected whether it backward would be able to stand [Music] on the hit-and-run again it's all the way so they sent back one the count is two balls and two strikes st. Louis in the 6th inning in a rain delay but a keen is now official as they lead Houston 8 to 1 and the Phillies lead San Diego 3 to here for four times with nobody on in the 11th inning and they sent jamming the pitches low Yeager's throw battle to the second base and Kelvin and people who are back when is able to steal it so Wally Backman stealing second base after they had tried unsuccessfully the hit and run twice the back was an excellent base runner in a situation where you know you're probably gonna have the pitcher take a little bit extra time and throw a strike the only Russell makes a nice play that ball could go into center field but he does block the ball with his leg or bottom of his glove to keep back when it's second nobody out a pretty important play Hernandez to the pine tar rag again and coming up with the count three balls and two strikes [Music] Jagr has been very proficient in throwing that out this season there's only the fourth steal in 14 attempts [Music] grab it to the right side Rock will make the play but on to play back when advances to surge so Wally is there and we won out there looking for a fly ball at least from Carter Keith Hernandez did exactly what you'd want him to do give himself up had to do with the excellence to Steve house got a fastball up and in on him but he knew that if he hits it to the right side back then we'll get the third base with less than two outs the only one out there some possibility the swing resulting the bass did also is there our season debut of Monday night baseball late local news to follow and then Nightline as we are in the 11th inning the 4-4 tie Gary Carter will be walked intentionally here [Music] like for the national league lead in RBI has 106 the George Foster comes up but they love to see it wants to do what he did back in the sixth inning when they came up with runners at first and third and hit into a double play this 12 at a time the game ball immoral winner Seattle leading Detroit of the night Red Sox win Yankees win [Music] and here are four four times [Music] Tommy Lasorda you had the luxury with a guy like George Pasha that can't run and play your first to third baseman George stop in your second basemen back at double play depth with all - one of them [Music] looking for the DP one of those accounts [Music] and it's - it up and this is where to baby in two days and her all catches up with you you need that little bit of extra dough for the strikeout run that basketball away not used to doing it it's hard to do it [Music] two balls and one strike the count [Music] [Music] good fix to it though there's no substitute for talent Steve Hackett's behind George Foster - oh no he comes back with two fast balls challenges and throw the other one right by him on deck Danny Heath the left-handed batter who sent the game the descended and Thanksgivings been gave and that's the lead in the top of the night fire goes down good job by house keeping it low and walkers walk back a worn over five tonight well he is down with his fastball hey George respect and then got him out with a goodlow inside slider perranoski goes to the bow now with Danny Heep coming up beep one two three now I would think that Burton's pretty much what what he would be telling them is that you have to watch the first and third place situation where a lot of times with a winning run on third base you will start the runner hope that the third the pitcher will be distracted by ninth inning this game the next day for to leave Kelly was 2 out of the top of the ninth inning but the Dodgers came back on a couple of doubles and a single by Guerrero and the to turn the game so he with two out runners at first and third makes up a name one of those they pitch the Grove Hernandez back [Music] Nexus wins and pretty welcome Bobby Valentine in Milwaukee a Danza City after getting started lines up getting rain down [Music] Ubaldo tracks now I can give father and our season debut of Monday Night Baseball the 11th inning a 4-4 tie with 2 on and 2 out of the picture strike to the side again we got water bolli behind again I came back to Frank Gore job two one [Music] that field [Applause] pijo [Music] from London on Saturday live 4:30 Eastern Time the WBA world featherweight championship fight Eusebio Pedroza and Barry Mac Wigan on ABC's Wide World of Sports best fight a long time on wide world he will want to see that one and I will definitely see that one Saturday then the next Monday we've got Toronto New York Chicago Montreal your late local news to follow our Dodger met Keane which goes to the bottom of the 11th inning it's a three and a half hour boring four runs 12 hits and no errors for the Dodgers four runs nine hits and one error for the New York Mets [Music] he'll face Baldonado Guerrero here in the bottom of the 11th inning that's very successful not only in expanding we'll be back the last year but in one run decisions as well they have been winning the close one and what a difference that makes in the same [Music] right we're sad to make above a club when you go to spring training you know to be successful that's what you're going we have a pretty good defense or leading me a nationally felix errors committed see the forkball like that you know that's how you're gonna win the pennant if you're gonna win the pennant work ball just going down and [Music] swings at men stepped on [Music] or two now the Nano hole for his last 25 one ball two strikes [Music] a check of the OE he was likes to Albuquerque [Applause] [Music] I got an interesting thing Tommy Lasorda America Dodgers was talking about he said when you get in the slump he said you can't hit and you can't feel didn't say anything about pitching because they've been doing it very well it seems to me when you have a young player like auntie melon on over 25 son who's never done it before the a tendency to have to think about veteran player is what the heck I've done it before will happen again both the 26 is coming up [Applause] and r.j. Reynolds coming up next last year on their last a text reading games in a negative 83 and then 11 and one last year four and two this year so that's how we come up to the 23 out of 26 [Music] for the Mets [Music] large a headache 284 very late hike again he's probably saw him limping early on that he gingerly came around the bases to score the tying run on Guerrero single Eliza we'll be very tough and him to be without [Music] penis ripped in the center he can afford to strike the first after that winning run at first but again the Dodgers are where the guy at first base to have trouble running here Tom Gorman you throw a fastball in the guy's swing this one is in the quad you come back with a hanging changeup you've really done the hitter or a favor that's exactly what he did - part of that pitch selection you're out of amount of easiest place to tell when a guy on your basketball come back to the breaking ball and you hang it we see bill Beulah the Dodger trainer running out the dr. RJ Reynolds if you want to be wondering why they don't think I mad well they've got the only other non pitcher is Terry Whitfield who could go to the outfield and Lasorda just might be forced to send a pinch runner in for but Whitfield is the only non pitcher left on the bench I'm sure RJ is saying hey you know I like it up here I'm I'm on a hot streak free hits tonight let's not pull a hamstring you're talking disable this for anywhere from two weeks to a month sometimes if it's a severe hamstring you're also talking about a situation it looks like he's going to stay in the game that if you get an extra base hit here [Music] you're gonna try to score extra inning tie ballgame you might not be able to do that Guerrero with three hits tonight so Pedro starting to take the doldrums batting 280 Guerrero with five homers and had 20 runs batted in Gorman is gonna make it any age way I never take anything for granted yes sir well after watching them run around the bases tonight I don't think he's faking [Applause] all on that in fact is lead tells you ladies hurting [Music] tiny little leave anything the way it comes off the base one ball one strike again [Music] situations the healthy runner at first [Music] theatres moving open up of all at first and third situation big rock coming up swinging brownie to the left side today to hurry up [Applause] [Music] Foreman's forkball in there just a good fork ball Guerrero's cool check swing Santana knows he doesn't have a shot at second just a sure out at first [Music] about 1/2 of stuff now you've got Brock here's the situation where you've got the winning run a second you've got first place open but you're gonna last the again Lefty whereas if you walk them you've got the right knee and back coming up [Music] rock tonight old for five comes up hitting 224 [Music] we'll be tough for him to score in a single met second be the one thing though Wilson is playing briefly deep in center field in brackets well up the middle I may move T is way back there [Music] even though you're aware of the fact and then on second Reynolds is the winning run we saw what playing to shallot can do for you in the ninth inning and there you can see how DP is ABC News Nightline interview with Patrick Buchanan coming up preceded by your late local news thirty six thousand nine thirty five looking on first inning the Dodgers scored that another run in the second Mets tied the game with two in the sixth when a head-on heats homer in the ninth and then the Dodgers came back with two of their own in the bottom of the ninth inning here's throughout bottom of the 11 o in one account Reynolds at second base [Music] for for sign in the bottom of the 11th inning Foreman and relief McDowell and Orosco Reynolds with a sore leg at second base and two down [Music] [Music] the two times he threw a slider the Drakh this year he said to Rockets here we have one two you see what kind of fish selection he has at the ground or the second day when he fielded by back for LA in the bottom of the 11th inning one hit winning run left a second to the 12th we go of four four times [Music] Dodgers and Mets on the season debut of Monday night baseball hitting on to the 12th inning in LA at 8:47 here on the coast Steve Howe and a game that started shortly after 5 o'clock working on the bed as we go to the top of the club late local news following and then Nightline many of the games in the east of course are over those starting pretty much simultaneously with this one we're going to maybe a race between the University of the end of the one in San Diego that started at 7 Orioles win Seattle wins over Detroit Red Sox win Yankees win Rangers beat Chicago and Milwaukee in Kansas City postponed Cardinals leading the eat delayed by rain in there in the seventh down south the Philadelphia three San Diego two [Music] our Justin is the batter and he grounds him right under the glove of Howard into centerfield for a base in that's the seventh time tonight that the lands have gotten the leadoff man on but they've scored in only two of the innings Howard Johnson 12 home runs last year all of them left-handed which had hit her bill Robinson batting instructor was talking about trying to get him hitting in 165 to hit the ball back up the middle he did exactly that took the fastball from Steve now right back up the middle for a leadoff single now Santana comes up with a Anderson protecting against the bond of third and Brock ready to charge if necessary and Rafael already squared over a bigger throw his back to Duncan and if it's too go ahead Ron Johnson a second base on the two for second now dormant spot and it looks like it'll be Christensen as we watch it again no perfect sacrifice bunt Steve Steve Yeager just leap on it talked about a throwing arm right on the money for the out at first but it does the job as Johnson in scoring position at second the rookie John Christensen who has been with tuned with Danny Heep since the injury to Darryl Strawberry will come up the back here that's abuse three pensioners tonight none with success blocker grab at our fertile ground on Chapman flight out of that question - for his last 26 comes up hitting 122 Montreal beat San Francisco this afternoon four to two of the rookies team Claire who pitched here yesterday in relief getting the win Frank Williams throwing one away on a punt in the fifteenth leading to his loss [Music] kind of illustrates what you talked about the medicine outstanding X training record means they're doing things right perfect ample there the sacrifice could lead off it / and you do it is to create the situation where you can get the go-ahead run a little more pressure on see how the a few times two days in a row Christenson from this area Ward and Doughty living now in bulletin a check swing of the plate pretty good year last year at the triple-a level 15 home runs it shows it was the difference between triple-a ball the major leagues but she probably played regular last year and the sherry thing they eat the right bill is just off the plate one ball two strikes again Mookie Wilson on deck when the Dodgers go to bat in the bottom of the 12th inning Russell Yeager and Anderson are the three [Music] for four times they're not a breaking pitch two balls two strikes most to me the big difference between Steve Howe after elbow surgery and before is really his breaking ball always had a great slider throw almost anytime any counter it's not snapping off quite a bit but then when you consider that he was throwing five weeks after having elbow surgeries made quite a comeback popped up foul ground and is a lot of ruins on down here just attack me by grot see down Dustin still a second that considers Oh for tonight and back to the top of the order is Mookie Wilson makes his sixth plate appearance comes up won't before Plus award [Music] Mookie Wilson nicknamed by his grandmother real first name wedding wasn't for Grandma we'd have to Willie Wilson he'd seen the other Willie Wilson right Willie W Wilson looks like they're gonna intentionally walk them really hitting 316 from the right side and it's a choice there you see manager Davey Johnson of what you want to do possible go ahead winning run on second base do you pitch to Wilson or do you pitch the back but he's gonna fix the Backman who has a horrid lifetime average against left-handed pitching but singles the center and singled sharply off al in the 11th inning so Wilson goes Anna first with Howard Johnson at second the Mets of the Dodgers tied 4-4 in the top of the 12th inning and instead of simply give up rain night comes up to hit for bank we do the runners at first and second Davey Johnson's going to send up a man he thinks can drive him in despite Backman signaling sharply in the 11th well again Davi we talked about not how he relies on the computer also relies on percentages probably sat there and now got behind back in three and two kinda late one in there he singled up the middle in this situation I don't care what the count is you don't take anything off you go right after ray Knight - on it - out rounded sharply foul an account on one not a struggle this season physically and at the plate he's hitting 188 the two homers and eight RBIs another man who underwent some surgery early on is here but if you had the arthroscopic surgery on the shoulder last November and then have problems with his elbow went right in and they did more ofter scopic surgery on a Dumbo [Music] [Music] and how much you know how's the family how are you how you hit did you put the last thing that they did to you surgically or how you feeling I seen you walk up the guys have the old endure [Music] 1 1 pitch a little swimmer right back to see now gets into trouble here on the cross and then it works out of it again 2 innings in a row still for 4 at the end of 11 and a half back at Dodger Stadium after this now Michaels and Jim Palmer and we welcome you to Good Morning America keep looking around for Joan Lunden this by the way is just the first of two the second game of the doubleheader will follow it's one people as the game approaches the four hour mark the Mets and the Dodgers signed for for Davey Johnson is forced to bring in a fellow who's had some arm problems this year and went to the minors and pitched warnings yesterday and Doug says no bad he did and of course he thinks he's back I don't know if one good outing means that but certainly if you've been struggling and will build up your confidence there you can see the stats 1 & 2 with a 6 point 6 7 er a not exactly the dug cyst we saw last year had a lot of mechanical problems and sit up here in the booth and talk about him but the bottom line is to have to go out there and pitch well good sinker ball pitcher with a little bit of a slider but he just struggled he starts with Bill Russell by working inside ball one one and Oh ray Knight stays in the game at third base for its second base rather no he says he did it sir than what they thought his new Howard Johnson over to second [Music] [Applause] [Music] do not get Russell Russell dislodges the ball from Hernandez and Heath has shaken up on the play [Applause] throw up here to get there in time and Russell's came right into the arm of Keith Hernandez and that's about the last thing the Mets would need right now but it doesn't appear to be serious the Dodgers get the winning run to first with nobody out so Russell is aboard as they check out Keith Hernandez well dust Doug this has the good sinker see it running in Brussels just tops it see the throw it's a little bit up the line Hernandez wants to catch the ball and also [Music] glove is hit by Russell one of those injuries that you may not know how serious it is till tomorrow [Music] comes up with a second time in the game he's singled in the tenth inning comes up here to try to bump the man into scoring position to try to bunt Russell over and Jaeger lays it down but foul Lord wanna count [Music] local news following baseball and then Nightline [Music] Russell held on by Hernandez who still shaking it off the first page [Music] but it and it taught by Johnson at third and Russell alert enough to get back to first base experienced baserunner Russell who has seen it all going the ball was popped up and get back in a hurry and that's exactly what he does so at least they avoid the double play but Yeager can't get the job done where we see the bun attempt again kind of dropped the bat not the proper way to do it pops it up by and running play by Howard Johnson somewhat redeemed himself for the even though wasn't judged as an error kind of an errant throw to first on a play before now anderson is the banner and he takes low ball one want to go to town Lynch started McDowell Orosco Gorman now sis [Music] that almost puts Tommy Lasorda in position where if you don't sacrifice the runner you might want to think about either the stolen base which Russell doesn't do too often used to have pretty good speed but it's a good situation two balls no strikes even though sis has been wild in the past maybe start the runner and execute or try to actually get the hit-and-run [Music] Anderson a pretty good contact hitter [Music] there you see ducks in that pitcher the mechanical problem was not the right shoulder of Sisk even though he did have some arm problems late in last season but his left shoulder which is a very important shoulder for a pitcher was flying out therefore affecting his control and he had trouble not only throwing strikes for getting the ball down in the strike zone not only walking guys are getting hit very hard drawing a walk in that Terry wood field the last of the nine pitchers comes up with the lead the league with seven however they all came early [Music] the giant 12 v to the plate one out winning run Russell a second Anderson at first and it's a strike to terry on the outside corner on pitch from Fishman which kills the type of guy I think the Dodgers really felt would hit a lot of home runs but that slowed down a little bit good left field hitter likes the ball out over the plate but doesn't like it on the corner were assists through it on the previous pitch Oh into the count [Music] the most difficult jobs Major League Baseball is coming off the bench when you haven't been playing regularly trying to hit a guy pitcher like mike says backed up in Santana [Applause] get it there or they threw it away [Applause] so the Dodgers get a break and the doctors do having 30 bad defense all season get a defensive break as the Miss can't tarnish the antenna throwing tonight into it just come into the game second the Dodgers win it by a score of five before speak to next for ABC News Nightline immediately following your late local news except on the west coast made through any promotional sea pay by united airlines flying has united job and united is now serving fifty five cities in the united states this has been a presentation to the EVC sports recognized around the world as the leader in sports television [Music]
