[Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] welcome to baseball seasons 1985 diamond royalty [Applause] more than any other sport baseball is rooted in history there's something special in the battle between the pitcher and batter a timeless showdown at 60 feet six inches the feats of both hurlers and leaders came to a peak in 1985 for 56 years one of the game's greatest records had been ty Cobbs all-time farms a 4190 one career hits but since 1963 Pete Rose had piled up hit after then and by 1985 he began the season only 94 behind what the record means to me is that I'm just gonna be the guy with the most hits no more no vest caught was a much better hitter I'm gonna get the most hits all season fans would be riveted by roses determined chase for immortality Walter Johnson had held the career strikeout record since 1921 but by 1985 baseball had two vying for the crown Steve Carlton and Nolan Ryan both cost Johnson in 1983 and had past the record back and forth ever since in 1985 the race was on to see who would be the first to reach 4,000 [Applause] in 1985 there'd be even more magic on the mound as 46 year old knuckleballers Phil Niekro and 40 year old Tom Seaver were both approaching career win number 300 see because his career at age 22 with the New York Mets when he looki of the year in 1967 then two years later earning a side Young Award in 25 ways as the Mets won their first World Championship in 1985 Met fans believed they had another young ace with that kind of potential or maybe even more fastball struck him out as a 19 year old starter in 1984 Dwight Gooden had taken the lead by storm setting a modern-day rookie record with 276 strikeouts and a new all-time major league record by averaging over 11 strikeouts per 1980 the 1985 the kid they called dr. King was ready to be recognized as more than just a strikeout artist I don't really like the call of power pitch but a lot of people you know compared me a lot of power pitchers like Nolan Ryan Steve cards and wildness and those guys hear sunlight there it is crank them scratch out of something I just want to make a great pitch to put their young stars future in the best possible hands the Mets had traded for the NL starting all-star catcher four years running Gary Carter people thought Carter was the missing part he was a special player he's a guy who played hurt he played hard and he performed dramatically he was a wonderful wonderful player on opening day against the Mets division rivals the st. Louis Cardinals New York got its first good look at the best catcher in the league as the game progressed and we ended up being tied after after regulation I stepped up to that plate my teammates greeted me at home plate and then I liked them here was the fans chanting my name when he hit that home run on opening day it pretty much said we have all we need to be to be the best team in the end of division New Yorkers were delighted with the combination of youth and experience and the Mets became the city's top draw something that didn't sit well with the Yankees owner George Steinbrenner after just 16 games the boss took out his frustration on a New York baseball icon the Yankee manager Yogi Berra George was the bid unpaid Jules field he done went out and guy Dave Winfield we got done man we got yourself and we got Griffey we got team that it is no way we shouldn't be 20 games in the first place so the NFI you know I got no chance to play for my hero few games they looking I'm sorry in New York uh Billy enter Billy Martin who was brought back for his fourth spit as the Pinstripe skipper but even miracle worker Martin would have a tough road ahead Don Mattingly finished the month with exactly zero homers more importantly the newly acquired Rickey Henderson sprained his ankle and appeared in only eight games Alma batting 176 at Munson the Yankees were in dead last in the AL East to see who was on top you had to look far to the north where baseball's hottest team was warming in the hearts of all Canada [Applause] in the AL East Billy Martin wasn't the only familiar face returning to manage in Baltimore the Orioles legendary Earl Weaver came out of retirement in mid-june but couldn't recapture the old magic and the Orioles never challenged for the division that top hurts belong to Toronto while the traditional powers struggled the upstart Blue Jays would make their first serious run at the title manager Bobby Cox's only established star was ace pitcher Dave Steve didn't the American League starter in the all-star game in both 83 and 84 thanks Steve always had great stuff hard hard hard slider good fastball and he was intimidating on the mound he wasn't afraid to get hitters off the plate and you know he was like a bulldog Steve would lead the American League in ER a in 1985 by the middle of May the Blue Jays were alone atop the AL led by a young outfield that was the envy of the American League 325 year olds with all the tools George Bell in left Lloyd Mills beaten Center and Jesse Barfield in right [Applause] we had a great alkyl mostly could still use some bases and joists we could take you deep Jessie had one of the greatest drawing arms out there while the Blue Jays were a novelty it's out the East the Royals were a fixture atop the AL West looking to make their seventh trip to the playoffs leading the way was their incomparable third baseman George Brett when you thought of the Royals you thought of Georgia no doubt George was you know the heart and soul of the club when it got hot when we were in a crisis we knew that George was always there for us beyond Brett the Royals lineup was less imposing the rest of the league caught on intentionally walking Brett more times in 85 than any American League batter since Ted Williams in 1957 unable to score many runs the Royals feed in 1985 would hang largely on the young arms of their starting pitchers including free-spirited 21 year old Brett Saberhagen he's a little bit of a flake which I kind of like a little bit he has a good time but he's also very very serious and very tense when he gets that ball and goes out on the mound he's got a chance it could be an outstanding pitcher when he came to spring training he was just some little skinny kid he weighed about 160 pounds and you know in the M&E facial hair and all of a sudden he kind of caught everybody's eye while the Royals were still looking for their first World Series title in 1985 the oldest team in the league was taking charge in their division the California Angels at seven regulars age 34 and older including Reggie Jackson and Bob Boone the oldest of them all was the 39 year old first baseman lad Carrillo and all-star every one of his 18 previous seasons in 1985 Carew became the 16th major leaguer to collect 3,000 hits their career [Applause] teammates are coming out on the field congratulating gurus milestone came on the same day as that of another future hall-of-famer Tom Seaver [Music] [Applause] [Music] later in 1985 Phil Niekro reached the same milestone gunning for number 300 like penguins [Applause] while Luke Rowan Seaver cemented their places in history a pitcher half their age would make his own mark in 1985 in just his second year the Mets 20 year-old pitcher Dwight Gooden had become the most exciting player in the league electric you know he had electric stuff and when he pitched whether it was that Homer on the road there was a buzz we wanted to be there in case the incredible happen and the incredible was more likely with Dwight Gooden in 1985 them with any pitcher since Koufax even Sandy Koufax himself fell under Gooden spell saying I'd rather have his future than my past he was so good it was a joke I don't think anyone could have been better than Doc was in 85 he had a festival no one else had mixed to the curveball than no one else had the poacher is the word I think about with him because that year with all the fuss and when you faced him the world was watching and you know what didn't bother him at all Jimmy Frey would be the manager that Cubs fella with a microphone says Oh Jim no Dwight Gooden was quite good today what do you think of the young man's ploys what's his microphone ass and Jim says poise poise I'm 53 years old I've got poise but I don't have as a fastball in a curveball I can kill everybody Gooden had the Mets feeling like world beaters the greatest challenge in the NL East in 1985 would be the st. Louis Cardinals though Redbirds built their team around speed and defense playing whitey ball named after manager Whitey Herzog and best personified by centerfielder Willie McGee who would steal 56 bases while winning the batting title and a Gold Glove why do you put together a ballclub conducive to our ballpark he wanted to put up together a ballclub with speed guys who could hit the ball on the ground and run and then we have big Jack Clark in the middle to try to salvage things at times went when necessary Jack Clark had come over in an off season trade with more career homers than the rest of the cards 1985 regular lineup combine [Applause] but the key addition to the roster was a little-known speedster who didn't even make his big league debut until the second week of the season Vince Coleman said a rookie record with a hundred ten stolen bases the third highest total in modern history going into the ballgame your thing was to get on base it was so much fun by being on that team because we was playing as though we was playing in the park overusing high school and here we are as a major league setting and it was almost like a track meet every day as exciting as they were on the bases the Cardinals of 1985 were that rarest of teams that was equally exciting to watch in the field and it all started with a Wizard of Oz the team that they put on that field that time might have been the best team as far as range in the history of baseball guys Lagasse's military parents on the left side and centerfield and Coleman and McGee these guys could fly was only benefiting from the standout defense was staff ace Joaquin Andujar who was 15 and four by the all-star break more disappointing was lefty John Tudor with his third team in three years to do look like he was becoming a journeyman pitcher starting women 7 for the cartels but a phone call from his high school catcher turned his season around mentioned something to me that I would have part of my deliveries had always been that it wasn't there and just worked out it changed it and I think that changing that just gonna change the few other things and things just kind of fall into place sunset on June 3rd tutor won his second game of the year defeating the Astros Nolan Ryan both pitchers would go on to make history during the 1985 season to be the first man in the history of this great game to have 4,000 strikeout the Nets Danny Heep would have the dubious distinction of being linked with Ryan in history [Music] [Applause] [Music] baseball's summer of 1985 had more than its share once-in-a-lifetime moments on June 11th the phillies von hase became the first major leaguer ever to blast 2 home runs in the first inning of a game leading the fillers to a 26 to 7 hammering of the Mets [Applause] on July 4th in Atlanta the Mets were involved in some more bizarre baseball after 3 rain delays the calendar had moved on to July 5th with the Mets taking an 11-10 lead to the bottom of the 18th when the Braves had to send pitcher Rick Kamp up to the plate with his career batting average of 0-60 we had no pinch hitters left we had used up all of our all of our bench elders nobody left to pinch-hit [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the only home run of camps nine-year career sent the gamer to the 19th inning at which point he promptly took the mound and surrendered five runs the Mets ultimately won 1613 and then there was a firework show after the game which probably should have been canceled because it was almost four o'clock in the morning when the game ended we woke up the entire neighborhood in the summer of 1985 the most explosive player in the league was the Yankees Rickey Henderson he dominated games as much as you would ever see a single player dominate games Henderson became the first major leaguer with 80 steals and 20 homers and season and the only everyday player since 1939 to total score the team in batting behind Henderson was the defending al batting champion done many regular players you might have a period of time where you're in a zone you might carry team two to three days if you're an all-star maybe a week if you're a hall-of-famer maybe two weeks and Don Mattingly that whole year Mattingly's hundred forty five RBIs were the most by a yahoo since Joe DiMaggio in 1948 Mattingly was phenomenal they were just stupid numbers I mean the stuff he put up and then you know he was just so consistent and he competed he battled his brains out against it it wasn't Don Mattingly was a great player during the mid 80s it was Donnie based across the game not only in American League at the game Don Mattingly was baseball Mattingly Henderson and the Yankees stormed out of last place in May and were bearing down on the Blue Jays in the East by late summer pennant races and once-in-a-lifetime moments would be happening in all four divisions across the major rivers in Cincinnati heroes continued to chase down ty Cobbs record of 4,000 191 career hits by September the whole city was counting down together and Red's older marge schott had planned a big celebration at Riverfront Stadium for the big moment trouble was the Reds were on a road trip and their player manager kept playing and kept getting hits sooo Rose had 4189 three shy of setting the new record Rose lines one basic Rose protrude himself with Tony Perez playing himself against righties and Perez against lefties on the last game of the trip left-hander Steve trout was scheduled to start against the Reds meaning Rose would have the day off and would return home to try to break the record for the game they come down told me that trout wooden pitching in Patterson was and I had to put myself in a lie because that's the way it was you know you can't stick Wallman to save and get to hit Cincinnati off of right-handed Reggie Patterson Rose sitting in the first for number 41 19 to fifth came another sale to Ty Cobb at 41 91 then came a rain delay and the managers full rein in the visitors Clubhouse Marsh caught him in action take yourself out the game and Pete being a person that he is he was like no I'm gonna play that's the way he played the delay lasted two hours sending most Cub fans home record or no record and then he came up I think in the seventh inning and he had an absolute bullet toward the hole at shortstop a ball that maybe was somebody else playing shortstop he would have beaten it out I got lucky all right I broke the record in front of about 1200 people a Margiela's and roy mad on September 11th with a righty on the mound against the Reds at Riverfront the stage was finally set [Music] first inning Petros against Derek ow [Applause] I carried on just like with retro business I made the big turn at first realistically if you wanna know the truth if it had been one out or two outside of with the second that it made it I'd have made it because I knew when the ball hit the turbo is gonna bounce something Martines had to jump up and no one's going to jump up and catch the ball throw me out at second it's just not gonna happen but because there's no outs you're not weeding off the game you have to play the game the way it's supposed to be played when I'm at first base her motivation was the only time in my life I was ever on a baseball field I didn't know what the hell to do I didn't know what to do [Applause] and I don't think anybody in her right mind ever expected anybody to stand up for nine minutes they give you an ovation and for him to cry like he did which Pete Rose never ever did about anything it was just a night to remember it broke me down but it took nine minutes to break me down if they just sat down after 7:00 I'd have never broke that it took that extra two minutes then you start thinking about everybody responsible you be in there literally coaches they're gone your high school coach mr. Noor he's gone some of your minor league coaches they're gone your father who mentored you he's gone and you started thinking about all those guys that's what brings the tears to your eyes because you're thinking about all the people that should be there that couldn't be there coz I play so damn long with Cobbs time-tested record finally broken things could turn to the exciting pennant races of 1985 only in the NL West was there a runaway the Dodgers pitching staff boasting the majors Louis DRA included Fernando Valenzuela at 24 years of age already in all-star five times and in his first season as a full-time starter pour-over Heiser in the NL East doc gooden finished even stronger than it started incredibly allowing no early ones in all of September but as the Mets chased the Cardinals st. Louis was witnessing its bold astonishing pitching display struck him out on June 1st John Tudor at one win in seven losses over the rest of the season 2 to 1 20 games are lost only one throwing 10 complete game shutouts over his last 26 starts tutors cards and good ins Mets were on a collision course for October while in the Bronx the Yankees were on fire cutting the Blue Jays lead in the AL East from nine and a half to one and a half games Pasi at the plate [Applause] never before had both New York teams been so close so late in the season but the Yankees could never quite catch to rival though Mattingly fit as strong and was named league MVP the Blue Jays kept their hold on first place from the middle of May on to win the franchise's first ever division title [Applause] as for the Mets and Cardinals that race stayed hot until the bitter end on October 1st in st. Louis with the cards leading by three games and trying to wrap it up John Tudor shut the Mets out for 10 innings but the Mets didn't yield a run either cost a Tudor would would and his 11th complete game shutout of the season in the 11th with Ken dayley on the mound for st. Louis Darryl Strawberry came up for the mess [Applause] [Music] strawberries towering homer cut the division lead to two ultimately the Cardinals outlasted the next thing the annual Easter 101 wins most in the majors in 1985 was headed back to the playoffs move across the state the other Missouri team was in our final weeks showdown on its own to see if the Royals are the Angels would be advancing to the postseason the 1985 Angels held 1st place for most of the season as many as 7 and a half games ahead of the Royals in July but by late September the Lea did slip to one a four-game set in KC would settle it I feel pretty good we've got four games left we're even-steven we've got four games at home Houser had confidence he also had George Brett facing him and I was and most left-handers didn't like facing him and and I was no different and I hit a home run to straightaway centerfield and all of a sudden there was like man we can beat these guys but George I can honestly say it was the best player that I ever played with probably the best clutch hitter that I've ever seen during that last week of the season Brett had five homers and 11 RBIs as Casey took three or four and clinched the division in the ALCS the Royals would face the Blue Jays Toronto had been the best team in the league all season and wrote into the best-of-seven series on an emotional high Game one just tremendous excitement in the ballpark first playoff game ever and you know the crowd was excited the first ball you know I put it together that day pretty good get ahead of the hitters you know you know pretty much just shut him down it's just a great feeling to win that first one and you know be on our way to possibly go in the World Series in Game two Toronto pulled it out on the bottom of the 10th to take our two games to none lead [Applause] the loss was a record 11 straight in the postseason for the Royals manager Dick Howser but the skipper's confidence in himself and his ballclub never wavered he used to have an expression play the game hard play the game right we got the talent here and as a result we really don't panic and we can get it go one game can turn this thing around tonight could be that game and then we get back to Kansas City for Game three and I had the best game a single game I ever had in my life [Music] they pitched which was outstanding for us because he was the guy we obviously always counted on but you knew that other teams knew that to bread almost single-handedly built and protected a 2 nothing lead and after Saberhagen surrendered five runs in the fifth Brett came up again [Applause] Brett's second homer of the game tied the score he finished four for four with four runs scored and three RBIs and the Royal six five wins in Game four the Royals took a one-nothing lead into the middle but couldn't hold [Applause] the J's led three games to one needing to win three straight to avoid elimination the Royals gave the ball to Danny Jackson for the first of three must-win games Jamie quirk always came it came to me when I'm stretching on the table and he said well DJ don't worry about it you know you pitch bad game to go home seemingly impervious to pressure Jackson promptly sent this series back to camp [Applause] in game six again it was Brett who led the way in the air a 5-3 win got the Royals to Game seven though Blue Jays didn't seem ready I didn't think I was gonna pitch again and you know they they battled back though mixing though it was three to three and I was getting a start for the last game [Applause] [Music] the Royals catcher Jim Sundberg got the big hit and the Blue Jays would never recover [Applause] we just never quit and as a result about you win ballgames the Royals became only the fifth team ever to come all the way back from a 3-1 deficit in a seven-game series next up the Fall Classic in 1985 the Dodgers had the most dominating pitching staff in the majors with a to me RA under 3 and in games 1 and 2 of the 1985 NLCS a pair of LA aces Fernando Valenzuela and Orel Hershiser quickly put their cards down two games to none [Music] Fernando and Hershiser was hitting their spots it made it very tough to hit but we was able to come together once we came to Busch Stadium from the Moomins Vince Coleman stepped into the box to leadoff game 3 whitey ball returned with a vengeance there goes the runner that pitch out the throws [Applause] Coleman got st. Louis off to an early lead and 18 game winner Danny Cox made it stand up the car goes one quarter two and now trailed LA two years to one but then a rainstorm and bad news for st. Louis we were standing Larry on the first base line and my back was to this tarp and they rolled all the way up to my hip and they tried to lift it off that they couldn't so they had to reroll it back off and we went into the training room and that cracked my tibia with their igniter shell for the rest of the series the cards looked to reserve Tito Landrum to provide the spark [Applause] landrum triggered a nine run rally that came in classic whitey Hall fashion without an extra base in the Cardinal reserve at four hits in all as st. Louis even the series with a 12-2 win in game five it was tied in the bottom of the night when Dodger reliever Tom needin fewer challenge the switch-hitting Ozzie Smith who would never hit a home run batting left-handed in his entire eight-year career home I had a chance to hear the replay go crazy folks go crazy the Cardinals have won the game [Applause] and of course the writers all comes in after the game and did it surprise you now of course I didn't know what to say so I had come up with a one-liner I said no I said he was due wow that's good to come back to our ballpark I just wish we could have been three and two rather than two or three that feeling would be sure lived however as the Dodgers would come out swinging Joaquin Andujar struggled for the cards and the Dodgers led for one but saintly was rallied against Orel Hershiser in the seventh and Lasorda called his top reliever Tom needn't yer into a situation that had striking similarities to the one that ended game 5 the 1-1 [Applause] here's the game this game is tied at Spencer Smith that delivered again but with rookie reliever todd worrell pitching in the bottom of the eighth the Dodgers Mike Marshall struck back [Music] [Applause] [Applause] needles your was still on the mound with the Dodgers ahead by one in the ninth with McGee on third Asya on second and first base open the Dodgers would opt to pitch to Jack Clark Jack pocket struck out maybe two ends proud of that needed fewer head through three fastballs by search the Clark he came into the dugout and he said please guys whatever you do give me another opportunity at this guy I will take him deep at that time we called it a big fly he says I will get a big fly off of you notice you get the ball and take those step toward our dugout not toward first base but toward our dugout and to tell us that here here's the big fly that I told you guys I was going to hit and this is something I'll never forget with the Cardinals victory in Game six the World Series was now set st. Louis and Kansas City two teams from opposite ends of the state of Missouri would face off in what was called the i-70 series but the Cardinals would still be without their Rookie of the Year Vince Coleman losin Vince was a big loss we couldn't play baseball like we were played all season but if the Cardinals couldn't run a top speed they could still pitch and play the field with the best [Applause] [Music] [Applause] there was a visa Terry Pendleton helped John Tudor won the opener in Game two the Royals Charlie Leibrandt nursed it to nothing lead to lower throughout in the night [Applause] [Music] [Applause] clark's had made it a two-to-one game and the Cardinals kept comfortable [Applause] Landrum's double put runners at second and third Leibrandt walks Cesar Cedeno intentionally to load the bases the way else a sham Dan Quisenberry was loose in the pen Houser left me Bratton that faced Terry Pendleton [Applause] pendulums bases clearing double gave the Cardinals a 4-2 win and a two nothing lead in a series history was seemingly not with the Royals no team had ever won a Fall Classic after losing the first two games at home you've got good players wife and the Royals had lost the first two games of the 1985 World Series at home but manager Dick Howser and his team had been down before they never panicked you know whatever the situation was he would just say we'll get it done [Applause] down to nothing in the series the Royals would have to get it done in st. Louis and after staking their young age to a comfortable lead Saberhagen cruised to away to the Cardinals shutout King John Tudor who blanked the Royals three nothing st. Louis was now one win away from the title the champagne was honored and the city was ready to celebrate getting in the game five I'm walking around st. Louis and and I see all these World Series champions st. Louis Cardinals and it was my wife and I turn to my wife and I said they only won the game yet and they're already consider themselves champions listen it's not going to happen we still felt that we could win for the second straight series Danny Jackson would start a must-win game five but it was the Royals offense that would be the story early on [Applause] the Cardinals quickly became frustrated in Game five while the Royals methodically put up runs [Music] [Applause] Danny Jackson went the distance for the Royals in a 6-1 win and they returned home for Game six still trailing three games to two in game 6 danny Cox and Charlie would he Brennan kept the game scoreless into the end before st. Louis pinch-hitter Brian Harper pushed across a rock [Applause] [Music] [Applause] in my mind the game was over for us with a defense that we played them with the guys that we had in the book that we felt like this game was over Lukie reliever todd worrell face pinch-hitter Jorge Orta to start the night and what followed became that turning point of this series [Applause] first base umpire don dankinger made one of the most scrutinized calls in baseball history well if you were there it looked like he came off the bat it happened fast and it wasn't until he could slow it down a freeze-frame in and and show the picture that his foot was on the bag after that call the Cardinals came unglued Dinkins are always his way important but that didn't mean jack Clark couldn't catch a pop-up that didn't mean that Darrell Porter had to get him past [Applause] with the bases loaded pinch-hitter Dean ward came to the plate with a chance to send this series to a game 7 [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the Royal reserve became a hero with a broken bat and a broken nose I don't know if you guys were ever noticed I ran to him so hard and so fast and I jumped up and my right shoulder hit him in the face and all of a sudden I saw blood coming out and then I kind of told everybody to stop you know see if Danes okay and as soon as we all stopped he started yelling again so we all started hitting him again meanwhile the Cardinals couldn't stop thinking about the controversial play that started the rally in so many ways we felt like the World Series that should have been over and that that an umpire took the World Series from a good excuse I don't believe that but at the time I think I was guilty of believing that like everybody else we came out that seventh game and I can't explain it but I think it was the feeling on our side that it was over and then we were gonna win I don't know we seem to feel that they knew that too even with John Tudor on the mound it soon felt like it was just a matter of time [Applause] Darryl motley almost broke the ice bit one pitch later the Royals took the lead for good [Applause] it begun and - they would begun in the third I'd say we started celebrating that game when it was about six seven nothing in the fifth we're up big I can remember George on the bench saying let's get this thing over this let's let's celebrate everybody start making out let's go let's get this thing over with by the time it was nine nothing in the fifth the cards couldn't get anyone out pirzad look to joaquin andujar to put out the fire but he only fanned the flames I called down the bullpen I said walking you're the only guy I got down there I brought him in and he's through the portal and strike denken czar of course had a bad night does everybody in the world really miss a fight at first base he goes out and starts chillin walking out and then I went out and I told him down I said what's the matter I said get back behind the plate and you know if you had done your job last night we wouldn't be here tonight I got kicked out when the clubhouse is sitting in my office all of a sudden here comes walking he got kicked out it might have been the worst night I've ever spent and managing the baseball team it was the best of times for the Royals for after seven playoff appearances in ten years they would finally have their time good morning there first and still only World Series championship the Royals became the only team ever to come back to win after being down three games to one twice in a single postseason and as for George Brett who had played the game with unsurpassed passion team spirit and skill for a decade it was his crowning moment the very next season Royals fortunes took a tragic turn as their beloved manager Dick Howser left the team having been diagnosed with a brain tumor and died the following year at age 51 George Brett played until 1993 his 21st major league season all as a Kansas City Roy [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Brett would become a first-ballot hall-of-famer joining other 1985 notables Tom Seaver Phil Niekro Nolan Ryan and Rod Carew as for 1985's most celebrated record center Pete Rose he would play one more season finishing his career with 4200 56 hits a record that still stands 1985 was a magical summer when the generations most talented pitcher made the future seem unlimited and a team embodied the true spirit of the game was crowned its champion [Music] Oh
