so Mike Lacoste he started his accident with the Cincinnati Reds set to go big tall right-hander and he starts off with a ball breaking ball will start the ball game commences a team time actually in second place in hitting hitting 271 they are fourth in home runs with 153 and they are second in runs scored was 639 and the fastball fouled back Cardinals lead the National League hitting at 273 and they also lead in runs scored on deck batter for the Mets Wally Backman the cost from Glendale California on down the former great manager of the Yankees that also manager the next strike one ball and two strikes [Applause] Dijkstra in his last ten games that in just over 300 306 in his last 25 games he has scored 20 runs [Applause] ground ball to the hole and threw in the right field for a base hit so doctor gets his ninth hit in 19 at-bats against San Francisco Rob Thompson the second baseman playing Lenny a little closer to second base because there were two strikes Dykstra just pokes it right through the hole you got to hit it hard to get it through this infield the grass fairly high so thanks to with a lot of topspin on that ball some of the Mets have a runner at first with no one out at wally backman up Backlund hitting 239 for the year no home runs 19 one's better than the Giants looking for sacrificing third baseman Chris Speier in on the edge of the grass and the toss to first thanks for with 22 stolen bases in 28 attempts it thanks to a 1 second base I think they should be looking for the sacrifice Wiley batting only 213 I know and he tries to bunt his way on pops it up the second baseman Dykstra actually bunny for should say Backman actually but him for a base hit and popping the ball up on the hard drive I guess Wally's thinking on this is that even though the first baseman is holding Dykstra close to first and is playing more shallow that Thompson would be cheating towards second base you see Ralph even after an off day you still reserved that energy to fire your helmet somewhere very important but maintained that straight keep keep that arm going so one away a runner still at first and Keith Hernandez abettor Hernandez hitting 306 13 home runs 65 runs batted in and Keith brings a 16 game hitting streak in this game hitting 350 over the 16 games two home runs and that's with 12 runs benedict longest hitting streak of the Year by Mets player longest in the National League Terry Pendleton with 19 consecutive games with the Lee Sehorne bassist Bob Molitor went to 39 before he was stabbed where's Darryl Strawberry on deck I'll tell you Ralph through the whole thing I think Paul Molitor deserves a lot of credit with the way he handled everything his patience with the press his intelligent remarks his patients overall I thought it was just you know well-spoken young man he's all classy we handle that really was all the way ironically he had been old for four was in the on-deck circle for the chance to bat one more time if the batter in front didn't get a base hit that was Rick Manning and Rick won the ballgame and molitor's remarks after the game he said you know I I think the emphasis was on the wrong syllable or something that effect when the crowd was quiet after the Brewers won the ballgame and I thought that was you know the true humility that you really look for in a ballplayer and I think Molitor showed that throughout that hitting streak he really looked like it was sincere as he would not even graduated BRIC when he got that base hit to win the ballgame and that kept him from batting if he had not gotten that base hit and had not in to hit into a double play he would have hit again and the pitch to Keith Hernandez a fence ball and strike two left-handed hitter like Fernandez usually tries to pull the ball and use the hole on the right side but with Lacoste pitching he throws that dead sinker away and he's really tough to pull but with two strikes I think Keith would be trying to go up the middle and the other way against the cost and the I feel playing Keith that way two strikes account thanks to her again draws a throw Mets have 121 stolen bases in 159 attempts 77% of their attempted stolen bases have been successful [Applause] Ethan and us in his hometown San Francisco he's done well here 18 364 against the Giants this year and he takes therefore a ball its 1 and 2 [Applause] bananas having another of his consistent type of years five times 300 batter last year hit 310 for the Mets and this year at this time in the season hitting 306 and he bounces this one out for the shortstop should be too [Music] by parking first place and they turned the double play the Giants lead the major leagues at double plays that's 149 it ends inning one hit no one left the score at the end of one half inning the Mets nothing the Giants coming up there fielder hitting fifth and will Clark batting in an unusual six spot tonight Bob Brenly the catcher batting seventh Jose Uribe the shortstop hitting eighth and Mike Lacoste the pitcher batting ninth and the defense for the Mets Keith Hernandez at first Wally Backman at second Rafael Santana playing short and Howard Johnson at third and the first pitch popped up to the first base side and Keith Hernandez kind of battling the wind gets uttered makes a pitch and makes the play on the first pitch Robb Thompson leading it off Thompson hitting 258 before the out with eight home runs 37 RBIs so one pitch and one away and that brings up Chris Speier fire hitting 252 - 34 RBIs he said two of his 10 home runs in his last four games and he has a four-game hitting streak the giant outfield could say the Mets outfield we have McReynolds in left field Dykstra and center and strawberry and right to catcher's Carter and the fastball by Gooden ball one fire hitting old 56 against the Mets one for 18 but that base hit a big hit against the Mets drove in two runs and cross the Mets a ballgame and the fastball for ball two 2 and on fire had two home runs in Philadelphia one Monday a game winner on Tuesday and he scored in front of bob brenly's 2-run homer as the Giants won 2 to nothing to beat Shane Rowley on Wednesday night and his career record against a white Gooden unbelievable he is hitting 500 against Gooden six hits in 12 at-bats and that pitch a ball so it's three and Oh and good and walks him on four pitches talked about the home runs and all the pictures and everything Stephen Howard down near the batting cage before the ballgame we're talking to Roger Craig ask him who's your most valuable player right now every said Chris Speier here's a utility man that the manager says is his MVP that's amazing and Speier certainly of wise pickup he was with the Chicago Cubs and recommended by Don Zimmer yeah now the batter will be by called ready held ready hitting 331 7 all months thirty seven RBIs as you look at Roger Craig - former Mets pitcher and Angela the Giants on the base in on his way to third his fire on the hit-and-run play and the Giants have runners at first and third with one man on as the Giants apply the pressure here in the first well I am really surprised that Gary Carter isn't pitching more pitching out more because Roger Craig hits and runs more than any manager in baseball and he does it early he does it often if you pitch out on him he'll do it again as a matter of fact the Giants have only a 55% stolen base ratio only 55% of the time and the reason is a lot of teams have pitched out on a and the Mets haven't even though the Mets are seven and two against that hasn't been one of their weapons so far this year so runners at first and third one man out and candy maldonado the batter 3:08 for the year with 15 home runs 61 s vetted in he's hit he'd 333 against a white Goodman and the first pitch hit down to third base and taken in the air by Howard Johnson so I'll quick out as the Giants come out swinging three of the first four batters hitting the first pitch and the other one Chris Speier walked on four straight pitches Johnson couldn't get the ball out of his glove in time otherwise he may have had a shot at Al's ready at first so runners now at first and third with two men out there will be chili Davis who said he'd bundle burgers in the white goodness with a Jewish word wall for 24 when he did gets to the shake the first time that the nice base good in this year average he gets good he owns it beer that both ballgame as a pinch-hitter he struck out babysitting 240 for the year 18 home run 64 runs batted in gave us a switch hitter he has it 9 of his home runs as a left off the left-hand pitching batting from the left hand side against the right-hander and the first pitch ball one is good and starts off with a curveball [Applause] Chris fire the runner at third base I'll dready the runner at first two men away no score we're in the bottom half the first Eddy man the fastball fouled back out of play one ball one strike good news lifetime record sixty nine victories twenty-three losses five-time against the Giants five and three and another another good crowd here at Candlestick John's figured to draw somewhere around a million eight hundred thousand issue and that pitch a ball so it's two and one that's about the same attendance that the Oakland A's will probably have right around 1/8 if they can stay in it they're leading 3 to 2 over Toronto and the 8th inning make that the ninth inning now so that'll be over three and a half million for the Bay Area little resurgence here in attendance and M Pitts way outside a fastball it's 3 & 1 having some problems here in the first population in this area isn't that big they have a World Series in the Bay Area in that ISA [Applause] dokin Oakland only a game behind the many Minnesota Twins right now throw the first-base aldready back of no trouble with a count three and one the concentration should be on the hitter that's right alt Reddy has a couple of stolen bases but he is not a fast runner he shouldn't worry about him at all this is the point you got to get that pitch over to the hitter and keep that runner on third there he walks him so that loads up the bases against the white goodness heading to 14 with three hits and fourteen advanced but in his last 24 games he's had eight home runs and 17 runs batted in and the fastball a strike call as Tim mentioned at the beginning of the ball game unusual to see well Clark the power hitter in this ball club 86th yeah and Chris Speier hitting second against Gooden Aspire with one hit in eighteen times up against the Mets and the breaking ball for ball Gooden can't get his curve over he can't one ball one strike shows you how well the tents have been playing and how things have been falling into place for them though Chris fire on third base now Kevin Mitchell has an injury and he's on a day-to-day basis he'll play tomorrow Rogers set one ball one strike and the breaking ball hit down to Keith Hernandez who has it and that'll do it for the Mets unfortunate part of this particular part of San Francisco is it's not ideal for baseball obviously you see the fog back there rolling in last night a very very foggy night the Mets taking that commercial flight to San Francisco and arrived about 9:30 last night you came in from Palm Springs right 110 degrees there to go all man but it's pretty huh nice and dry beautiful of course last night right here in this ballpark they had a football game 49ers played here right in the field looks in good enough shape not torn up at least not from this vantage point or disadvantage point strawberry takes a fastball for Mike Lacoste's and strike one they're all hitting 279 for the year 31 home runs 76 runs batted in time for the club lead in home runs with Howard Johnson and it's another fastball one ball one strike Darryl has had four home runs against the Giants this year batting 360 with seven runs batted in and again the pitch out of the strike zone so they can't two and one strawberry in his last 11 games hitting 317 with three home runs and nine runs batted in big swing getting yet it it's 2 & 2 strawberry going after that fastball there on his last 33 games 10 home runs so he's been on the good pace he's done a great job in the cleanup position for the Mets yeah and strike two so it comes fits in with the fastball then I'll sing the pitches inside and Lacoste guys had that fastball that will come back over the plate I don't know whether that would get or not but he does throw that particular type of fastball let's see if it came back over the inside corner it could have very very close very close so one away and the batter will be Kevin McGraw Nolan let me get a little extracurricular activity going on saw some orange and black Halloween type balloons pulled over the infield McReynolds fouls off a fastball Reynolds hitting 285 23 home runs 76 runs batted in there they go into the wild blue yonder those blues just kind of went over home plate just kind of hovered there and then just took off like they were powered by something and a swing and a Miss you're watching Mets baseball 87 on wwo our tvs see caucus New Jersey two strikes the count that Kevin McReynolds hitting 229 against the Giants pitchers two home runs and he had an idea but held up in time 1 & 2 Mike lekars on August 16th right here at San Francisco against the Dodgers he pitched the 1 nothing shutout over 10 innings gave up only 3 hits and he gets his the plate so to looking at two fast balls and about in the same spot remember the strawberry fast ball and now the one-two McReynolds a little bit for down so I guess you could say that was a rider to the glider he is a glider - that'll bring up Gary Carter Carter hitting 238 was 17 home runs 66 runs batted in one of his home runs against the Giants he's driven in four and he's having 200 against San Francisco on the fastball for a ball no score in the game two men away top of the second inning Mets have 35 games left counting this one 13 at Shea and 22 on the road the schedule favors the Cardinals they have more home games and road games but as we said on our opening comments about three weeks ago it favored the Mets Mets played 19 of 23 at Shea but they won only 13 while losing 10 and on the four away they won one of the four ground ball the third spire over to glove it and the throw to first base for the out so the Mets go in order the type of night where Edgar Edgar Allan Poe wrote The Raven or something like that in a different setting it's kind of really murky around here it's time to play ask Tim and Ralph or that is murky this is kind of asked Tim and Ralph West Coast style all answers will be judged by the marquee of mountain lakes and all decisions are final as you see Bob Brentley the batter Bob batting 280 on the year and as we said is two run homer Wednesday night wanted for the Giants her ball is outside iron Ralphy in 1973 everybody remembers the famous fight between Buddy Harrelson and Pete Rose who hit the ground ball that triggered that fight 73 Championship Series and a strike 1 and 1 to Brenly fight between rose and Buddy Harrelson Cincinnati against the Mets the Mets beat Cincinnati in four games well changeup inside two and one partner Ralph Rose was on first base and he slid into Harrelson slid in an extremely hard Harrelson took umbrage to it and the fight started and there was another great fight involved there Pedro burb on curveball low 3 & 1 and we're bond after the fight picked up his hat started to go back to the outfield he actually thought I was playin Jones's hat and he took a bite out of it and then they found out it was his he was a little more disappointed better than taking a bite out of the hat when it was on somebody's head he did do that he used to fight in those facts I've heard that but you can tell by my answer that I don't know what I mean you might have gotten the idea I don't know well Don Zimmer wasn't there the third-base coach of the Giants but it's 3-2 to Bob Brenly well obviously you got it you have to guess it to be somewhere on some water and then I guess let me give you a call all right all right this player was a very prominent part of the big lit Big Red Machine and was eventually actually declared free agency after the 1979 season I think that was right 3 & 2 is inside that's the third walk issued by Bob Brenly well you got to be thinking of players like George Foster Johnny Bench because they would have been hitting behind Pete Rose who would have hit second or third though because Pete was leading on Jose Uribe the batter nobody outs with brilliant first no score bottom of - well Geronimo would have been in there hitting second or third somewhere in the probably second maybe eight there seventh but Geronimo has already been the answer to one quiz that I missed the 3000 strike out of my hips in and run so you don't figure they have the same guy in two quizzes they could but it would be a long shot look for the hit and run again here and when we talked about al dready hitting and running and he surely did on the first pitch he Craig loves to do it Uribe a fine shortstop batting 269 on the year well she got Joe Morgan in there so he got Joe Morgan Johnny Bench George Foster three candidates got an arrow down right there outside and Gary looking for the hit run can't guess right every time that's ball one but that's what Carter has to do in my opinion he's got to pitch out more on this ball club to prevent them from hitting and running for this fog is just flat moving in here I'm telling you one ball no strikes to Jose rebei well since Harrelson was covering second base that means that possibility had to be a left-hand batter pulling the ball there's a second baseman to the ball or the first baseman there goes Brenly a little looper out over the head is it so back then speaking of a left-handed hitter Backman covering and for the second straight time the hit-and-run works even though in strange fashion right there well hit and run coming after the pitch shot so they figured it wouldn't happen twice in a row so they put it on and now back when it was over to cover can't get back to it of course everything in the air here is an adventure and on the play Brenly holding up because he didn't know whether the ball would be caught and he can only go to second after it tips off the glove of Wally Backman so now runners at first and second as a win really swirls here at Candlestick and the fog comes in and Mike Lacoste will be up there to bunt with runners at first and second and nobody out the Mets for the most part because of Hernandez played the bunt play straight up there's no rotation play Santana holding grimly on its second the whole left side of the infield is wide open and he's bunting and it's ball one now the Giants are so aware of Hernandez charging that Kelly downs the last series in the only game the Giants won drilled one to the left of Hernandez down the right-field line in a similar circumstance one ball no strikes to lacasa cross hit a home run his first major league home run off dana orange remember him he was not a pitcher he did pitch this occasion all to to know I'm gonna give it a guess it's kind of I'm taking Joe Morgan that is correct my friend nice going a little high five action alright that is correct so Joe Morgan hit the ball that instigated the fight between rose and Harrelson there's the strike two balls in the start let's really play this strange don't they Santana almost like a first baseman at second base now right on the bag yeah look at him look at the left side of the infield the pitcher who can handle a bat at all can drill it over there but the cost is bunting and the fastball is low Carter wanted it three balls and a strike my goodness really struggling getting the ball over in a spot like this you want the pitcher to bunt it you're not trying to keep him from budding and you want him to bunt it sure don't want to walking you're looking for that out and hopefully you get it at third Johnson close to the bag at third Santana on second base and he bunted through the ball to throw to second and it's a little high and toward the second base side so it's three into two Lacoste send the runners here no okay not with a pitcher [Music] [Applause] Santana had to come up in front of the bag to take the throw as it was offline brynlee now will run he has eight stolen bases and of course rebate as good speed at first runners not running and the fun is a good one Gooden - third one five four double play two away well Zimmer is not arguing the call of third so evidently he believes that the call was right by Gary darling the third-base umpire Howard Johnson did a great job of the neighborhood play at third let's see it again watch now whether Howard Johnson catches a ball on the bag it is very close he wasn't even close to the bag neighborhood it was but if a first baseman can cheat why can't a third baseman here's another angle of it good and takes it throwing throws it to Johnson no good play though but he did time it well and it looked good and that's really what you look at kind of like our business you hope and you hope to get a good call once in a while - that is correct it's oh and one - Robbie Thompson he top to first base or popped to first base is first at-bat is Uribe is it's second with two outs [Applause] strike on the corner oh and two it's kind of my point about sending the runners in that situation Gooden was struggling he was going to really try to throw a strike but I guess you're right Lacoste Willie doesn't have the bat control to send the runners on a button run would have taken a lot of guts yeah a lot of guts and would have put a lot of pressure on lacasa it does handle it well ground ball to Gooden and a little lollipop toss to Hernandez and Gooden is out of trouble no runs a hit one left after two no score we're back after this from Manny Hanny scoreless ballgame the Mets have sent the minimum number of hitters to the plate the Giants just the opposite but neither side has scored Johnson batting 273 with 31 home runs he's tied with strawberry and that department and the curveball for a strike well here's the bunt play and fielded by Gooden to throw to Johnson at third and Johnson made it look very good at third base and throws across the first to get the DoublePlay and that got the Mets out of the jam in the last half inning oh and one two Johnson swing and a Miss at the split-finger fastball that's Owen too well here's the off-speed pitch the splitter and Johnson has a big swing at it just didn't get it that was down in this wheelhouse Johnson with four home runs against the Giants this year got him on another splitter third strikeout full of cost and again this ball out of the strike zone as it drops out the fork ball or split finger fastball you know the amazing thing about that pitch Ralph not only theirs it makes a pitcher or turn a pitcher to help her pitcher to a winner but it also turns a pitcher who would be and would be normally a contact pitcher and it makes him a strikeout pitcher lacoste before coming up with that pitch was a contact pitcher strike out about three or four every nine innings ground ball pitcher mm-hmm Kevin Mitchell the X Met coming over from the San Diego Padres back on July 4th he will be in the lineup tomorrow nursing a sore right wrist Owen 1 to Santana ball 1 101 the appeal at first base and Ed Montague said no swing [Applause] Santana has had great success against the Giants hitting 515 grounder toward short easy play for Arriba two outs let's play tomorrow afternoon at 405 New York time and then another 405 starts Sunday afternoon will be here on W wor TV at four o'clock New York time on Sunday he played for Chris Speier that's eight in a row retired by Lacaze netted third base in the first inning as good and loaded the bases walking to the Giants had a base hit by Michael dready and then good and walked grimly to leadoff the second a base hit by Jose or Ebay but then a big double play bunted into by Mike Lacoste got Gooden out of it bird of pictures dancing through the raindrops I guess you could say goodness dancing through the fog drops here fog rolling in really an eerie but pretty sight want to know to Chris Pine fur ball low to know he's yet to throw a strike to spire and ooh I'd having trouble with his curveball here tonight of course when it's cold it's that ball gets seems to be harder than it actually is it is hard and ball slips out of your hand grounder towards short Santana to Hernandez one away [Applause] that'll bring up my cowled ready he singled his first at-bat good-looking hitter got his first hit off Dwight Gooden his first time up on a hit and run play he had been old for four against Gooden Mike has played first base all three outfield positions batting 352 over his last 60 ballgames and the curveball for a strike going one two Mike rip to right field ready with his second base hit strawberry stumbling momentarily out there but regained his composure to hold out ready to a single held ready just tore it up on their nine game road trip and he's continuing here tonight on the road trip aldready hit for 14 and he's 2 for 2 here at home the start of this home that on that fastball just like it should be done talk about at home the Giants 9 and 2 on their last home stand and they've won 13 of their last 15 home games here's candy Maldonado he lined to third as first to fact and ready from the rain night school of running they looked like they can run well but don't don't get there there he goes rip foul so that's the third time in three innings that Roger Craig has sent the runner twice on the first pitch all dirty in both ends first time was in the first any when he was hitting and now he's on first base and going with Maldonado hitting there you see Don Zimmer the original New York met third baseman there have been something like 82 cents Howard Johnson continues to play as he's been playing he will hold down that job probably longer than any other met third baseman Wayne yarid played the longest at third why submit third base over 700 games at third base oh and one two candy Maldonado good curveball there strike two [Applause] no score when the bottom of the third inning Tim McCarver along with Ralph Kiner and Steve Zabriskie happy you've joined us this evening cold windy foggy night here at candlestick good night for the fireplace you think about that don't you certainly bill it's just amazing you can go 10 miles from here and it would be very warm [Applause] flags in centerfield almost in a natural state swirled around the flagpole good play by Carter and it's one and two to Maldonado candy coming to the Giants year and a half ago for Alex Trevino [Applause] one of the few trades made between the Dodgers and the Giants over the years since moving out here after the 57 season another one that comes to mind Ron hunt for Tom Haller that was the first one few other minor ones but nothing major between the two clubs highly competitive interstate rivalry on the corner Maldonado complains to debts Renard but Gooden records his first strikeout two outs well duds when you take that mask off the umpire usually means bidness it's about time to leave he keeps a mask on you can stay a little longer and here's the pitch it did look like it was out of the strike zone it did look low it was long that's where the wide strike zone Kevin McReynolds was called out on the pitch just like it back in the second here's chili Davis chili walked his first at-bat swinging a Miss oh and one to chili Davis [Applause] another catcher that was transformed into an outfielder further proof really yes they are no doubt about it oh and one to Charles chili Davis I mean after all Dale Murphy is another example yep of course Bob Brentley to catch her for the Giants was a third baseman when he signed and they moved him behind the plate one might question that reasoning oh and one to Davis no score bottom of three good play by Carter one on one [Applause] gary carter has certainly had a busy year balls like that tough pitches to handle no doubt about it keeping the runner at first base by blocking that pitch his mechanics are outstanding his attitude always positive one in one to Davis two outs al dready at first curveball is high two balls and a strike to Davis you know they've called games here because of fog and this fog is getting lower and lower coming into the ballpark when those fly balls go up and you can't see them that's time for the umpire to say time one time we were in here and the fog came in they called time hoping it would clear away and while time was called they had fungal hitters hitting balls up to see whether or not you could follow the ball up and follow it back down I've never heard that story just to check it out check it out Charlie Finley's recommendation of orange baseball's would have been good that made 2 and 1/2 Davis good and really concerning himself without bready needlessly I think Prezi would Davis up two men out Giants have three hits goodness struck out one and walked three and you look at the Mets bench [Applause] [Applause] a lot of stepping out of the box in this ball park a lot of the wind blowing dust in the hitters eyes the pitchers eyes tough playing conditions 2 and 1/2 Davis another curveball is high it's three balls and a strike the on-deck batter will Clark in that trend you were talking about Tim Ron hunt and Nate Oliver for Tom Haller [Applause] I was thinking that was a one-for-one deal but Nate was involved in that huh there goes out ready fastball fouled away you know I think that's a bad running situation because if Davis swings through it and al dready has caught it second you don't really give Davis a chance in that situation a 3-1 count to really drive the ball to two three one with two outs I do not think our good running situations because now ball foul back but now Hernan is playing behind out ready and he's running anyway anyway propel the run to big gamble on three one if he gets out yep there goes the runner in the curveball gets Davis strikeout number two for good so the Giants have had baserunners in every inning but they failed the score no schoolin over the Toronto Blue Jays 3 to 2 so they closed the gap a bit Boston at Cleveland later on in Baltimore it's 5 to 5 California Baltimore that game after 8 joiner is 26th home run in that game Texas 5 to 3 over Detroit that's a final 3 to 3 Seattle at the stadium in New York after three and a half Kansas City over Chicago that's a final 9 to 3 and Milwaukee over Minnesota 1 to nothing so the A's and the twins tied down here Steve Zabriskie how you doing found all right Timmy thank you and a good evening to you all as Len Dykstra in the top of the order get set to bat for the Mets here in the top of the fourth inning no score Dykstra singled to right field in the first inning but was erased in the front end of a double play thanks to running up in the boxes if the bunt and takes the pitch for a strike one ball one strike at game in st. Louis now the Braves have come up with another one in the top of the ninth so it's 3 to 3 and that all-important game in st. Louis they're all important now tell you and the cost just missing down low and a count 2 & 1 the next row excuse me to me quite state but it's gonna say the Dijkstra's had a pretty good year against giant pitching hitting 444 with a couple of home runs but it grounds this one right to world cards at first base and as an easy play for out number one well tonight's game is being brought to you in part by RC Cola people go out of their way for the taste of RC whip Dykstra at first his first time up and popped the ball up to Robbie Thompson the second baseman Oh for one Wally has been struggling his average now down around 238 it takes you never know which way a ball in the air is gonna go back when fouls won't off outside of third [Applause] some was like a tornado or a hurricane swing and a Miss by back in one ball two strikes [Applause] sharply hit but right at shortstop josé Uribe here dungeon out two away play in the first his hitting streak it's 16 in a row and he takes low and inside ball one [Applause] it's hard to feel the seams of the ball in real cold weather and your glove doesn't feel as supple even know clink-clink bananas hits a deep to left but it will stay in the park Freddy and centerfielder chili Davis almost colliding but already staying with us Ralph guess the question correctly that's right so you win either way on ask Tim and Ralph the only people who don't win ordinarily are the people trying to answer the question will Clark leads it off for the Giants in the bottom of the fourth inning in this scoreless ballgame that shot you saw when the inning open looked like the stadium was on fire well it actually isn't smoke it's that fog that's rolling in over the rim of Candlestick Park a fastball fouled off by Clark in the count one two and it is again and it's a perfect night for Sherlock and dr. Watson boo appear I saw him on television last night as a matter of fact the evil doctor moriarity who was there as always that goes up everywhere I saw that that was on that was the movie where they tried to kidnap a guy who had invented the the what was it a new device for world war ii that's correct yes and the RAF sailed away into the sunset because of Sherlock meant a Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce to do it again one ball two strikes [Applause] and we'll Clarke now we'll have some words with home plate umpire Dutch Rennert who is not the most popular person in the park decision strikeout number three for the doctor but a lot of people talk about the conditions for the players well the conditions for the umpires given be adversely affected also see if this pitch was inside time to like the one too good to strawberry back in the second inning Bob Brenly fouls it off from his foot for strike one brownie walked back in the second now that feels good on a night like tonight your hands and feet are already almost numb then you wake your foot up real rudely with one of those it's not not many more a rather shrill wake-up call yeah we've had those couple of hotels allow bunting for a base hit a little too firmly to Hernandez at first out number two two out and nobody on for Jose Uribe who's single to center John McNamara once said that his marathon and checked a bed check and there was one in every room I don't know where the players are but if you did have a bed sure and Gooden got a gust of wind that apparently blue dust or something into his eyes and he stopped right in the middle of his delivery [Applause] and you had mentioned that earlier you can see that at home plate on the pitcher's mound and anywhere in the infield breaking ball down low one on one to Uribe Jose Uribe Gonzalez Uribe Gonzalez Uribe I guess meaning this one and two he is the last remnant of that trade that sent Jack Clark to the st. Louis Cardinals - over a period of three years it's Hosea repaid for Jack Clark Dave Lapointe David Greene and Gary race it's the other players in that trade grounded foul and the Giants really did not get much of anything for any of those other three players so in essence that really is what it boils down to David green as a matter of fact back playing for Louisville of the st. Louis Cardinals the triple-a affiliate Gary race it's playing in Japan and Dave Lapointe packed with the Cardinals earlier in the year he's now with the White Sox what a trade for st. Louis yeah slapped too short and Santana throws out Uribe and Gooden faces just three here in the fourth inning from second inning and Daryl this year against the Giants batting 360 with four home runs and the splitter from Mike Lacoste missed for strike one one and one la Costas only allowed one hit and that was to Len Dykstra leading off the ballgame since then he is retired every batter he is faced down low 2 & 1 [Applause] Darryl hits at very high flyball into short centerfield the wind is pushing an even shallower chili Davis with a long way to go to get there for out number one that Reynolds fouls one off out of play strike one McReynolds also called out on strikes in the second an unusual aside in this ballgame there have not been many strikeouts there have been six strikeouts and only two outfield outs both hit by the Mets you expect that adalah costs a lot of ground balls but not out of good that's right and the ground hunches another one out of play here at Candlestick Park there is considerably more foul territory in which an infielder can make a play then there are and most to than there is rather in most parts in the league so you have to really hit a ball foul to get it out of play bears don't like this though like those friendly confines where it's a short distance from the foul line to the stands you see from that shot the amount of foul territory there is he fastball grounded to short Uribe at a nice pickup now bring up Gary Carter with two out nobody on Carter batting in the similar situation in the second round of the third [Music] a strike call at the knees on one swinging this strike one strike two rody Lacoste this is this pitched breaks funny turn it looks like a hanging split finger fastball you could call it a hangnail you didn't have the for a ball that high in the strike zone it had some unusual breakup but that gives you an idea of how difficult the splitter is to hit even when it's up where you might be able to get a good hack at it and it's not diving into the dirt unpredictable rotation crew [Applause] another one two thirds spire over in front of your EBA to throw out hider 14 in a row have been retired since Linda extras leadoff singles Mike lacrosse in complete command and the ball game still scoreless as we go to the bottom half of the fifth inning after this for ivory so for Les Paul game things have really quieten down since the second inning Giants loaded the bases in the first and failed to score fastball inside and then in the second inning with the runners at first and second Lacoste bunted back to Gooden on a 3-2 count and Gooden alertly through to Johnson who completed the double play it was won 5-4 Backman covering Lacoste looking over our looking back at Dutch Rennert he wasn't complaining about the pitch was he it's one at one or was that Roger Craig Roger may have heard or seen enough and has been unable to restrain himself and perhaps he got both the attention of Dutch minute and the attention of Mike Lacoste Mike probably thought he was screaming at him the curveball is high - it was well he didn't look over there funny like what you want me to do swing at it - one pitch swinging to miss - and to quite often you'll hear people say that a guy is a good hitter for a pitcher that term has yet to be applied to Mike Lacoste in ten years of big-league baseball [Applause] 46 for 365 he lifts this one to centerfield and Len Dykstra makes the play that's the first play for the Met outfield tonight and you're watching Mets baseball 87 on wwo RTV Secaucus New Jersey second baseman and Rob Thompson the batter bottom of the fifth inning very important game for both clubs Houston and Cincinnati lost this evening so the Giants want to pick up a full game on both the Reds and the Astros and the Mets trying to keep pace where the Cardinals winning their game oh and one to Thompson Robbie Thompson has really been a thorn in the Mets side he's at 467 against New York pitching this year he also coming into the game had a career batting average of 400 against Dwight Gooden but he's over 2 and it's oh and 2 to Thompson looks like Dwight has had enough of the breaking ball to Robbie Thompson and has just decided to throw some gas in those first two pitches I've had something on him I think Dwight may have taken a little longer to get loose tonight because of the cool weather maybe there's a curve ball that stays high 1 & 2 to Thompson Robbie a number one draft choice only in his fourth season of professional ball from West Palm Beach Florida and it's 2 and 2 to rock well the fog has gone away when the word went it has blown away and that's what Gooden just did to Thompson oh and two or two outs strikeout number four for Gooden and a better Chris Speier good curve ball here to fast balls in three straight curveballs too high and this third one right in this just locked him right up Chris Speier now the batter Chris over one he walked in the first and grounded to short in the third Giants with three hits the Mets with one and then again the curveball for a strike going one Chris Speier is one I think he's third on the active list as being in the majors the longest without having appeared in a World Series and he of course desperately hopes to get there this year curveball outside low 101 of course when you think about the great players that played even longer than spire has played you never played in the World Series it's mind boggling changeup on the inside corner 1 & 2 and that list isn't short really no it's not got him on strikes strikeout number five for Gooden that's eight in a row retired by Gooden Lacoste and Gooden locking horns here at the stick no score after five now here's a word from the good ol Johnson with an idea about bunting then he takes ball one [Music] [Applause] both Johnson and strawberry with a chance to break the Mets all-time homerun record each of course has 31 home runs Dave Kingman had 37 for the club record back in 1976 and he did it again in 1982 [Applause] where's the bat Roger Craig sitting there motionless not making a move to check Howard Johnson's bat that has been x-rayed three times this year and Howard has been exonerated every time this pitch in that very volatile down in in area to a left-handed hitter and watch this boom time right out over the plate about knee or thigh high and I'm telling you Hojo's sitting all over it puts it in about the second row of the upper deck for number 32 of the year he now has 84 RBIs there's a strike to Santana it's one to nothing New York a tremendous home run by Rafael art by Howard Johnson his 32nd of the year man no.1 1 to Santana ground ball good play by Speier and he throws he now full extension by Chris Speier one away before the game Tim and I were talking to Roger Craig the Giants manager around the batting cage and he couldn't say enough nice things about Chris Speier the job he has done and his ability to make to play on just about any ball that he can get to and this is a prime example of that he gets his feet squared around in good throwing position and throws out Rafael Santana fine play here's Gooden another one to the left side shortstop this time Uribe throws out goodness go two out here in the sixth and the batter Lynn Dykstra Roger talking and talking about Speier said that he really didn't realize how good a hands he had managing against him coaching against him he also has the thing that a lot of infielders really need and of course he should have after being in the big leagues that long and that is the experience and know how to play the game testing yeah that's right he just almost instinctively always makes the correct play anticipation such a vital part of the game especially for infielders Len Dykstra one for two he has the other hit that's with two hits Giants with three and this one lifted the left my cowled ready squeezes it the Mets are on the board Howard Johnson's 32nd home run you said it's been x-rayed three times while it's been x-rated by people like that about 32 times this year 1 to nothing that's middle of the 6th let's go to New Jersey bail for a word freshing a pitch from Mike Lacoste to give the Mets a 1 to nothing lead leading off in the top half of the inning smashing this one into the upper deck and we are efforting the facts as to how many balls have been hit into the upper deck here at Candlestick Clarkson same close the stadium Mike LaCrosses reaction at the end of the half innings ready very predictable and very understandable but Howard Johnson as you said Timmy has caused x-rated reactions on the part of many pitchers this year throwing a fit Mike out ready the batter here in the bottom of the 6 then the curveball is low Mike 2 for 2 he singled the center on a hit-and-run play in the 1st and he singled to right in the third one to nothing New York drilled up the middle you talk about a good-looking hitter boy that young man can just flat swing the bat well Giants only have four hits off Dwight Gooden but my called ready has three of them he is 3 for 3 now this is a pitch but ordinarily Dwight Gooden can blow by people that high in a strike zone but Howard Reddy just goes up and instead of fouling it off or popping it up gets right on it and lines it into center field al dready earned his way to the big leagues last year hitting 371 he's from Monterey the same town that pete incavilgia is from and he doesn't strike out like Pete doesn't have the power that Pete does but man he can hit there he goes swing and a Miss the throw safe at second that is the third time that Al's ready has run on the first pitch every is it second with nobody out every time he has gotten on Roger Craig has put the hit-and-run play on out Reddy's third stolen base of the year as you alluded to earlier Tim he does not run that fast but he is in here hand to bag right ahead of the tag so with cat with Maldonado's swinging that makes it four times on the night that the Giants have employed the hit and run three times on the first pitch in all three times with al dready involved once as a hitter twice as a runner little looper that is foul [Applause] the Giants have put together an out Rosen and Roger Craig deserve most of the credit a Kuip of ballclub that doesn't really feature the stoop superstar approach a lot of people back east don't really know a lot about my cowled ready and Chris Speier has been a journeyman candy maldonado is just coming into his own will Clark is still a very young player Robbie Thompson a young and exciting player and their mix of veterans and young people have given them the kind of ballclub that really San Francisco has never had before the Giants when they won earlier were a Power Team with maize and McCovey and going back to the 50s guys like Willie Kirkland people who could hit the ball out of the ballpark and they had good pitching with Marichal people like that but this kind of a club really is something new for the Giants and and I think is the tyent kind of Club Timmy that with these young players developers they have so far and continue to make the Giants a pretty good team for a long period of time that's really well said because the Giants now building their strengths around pitching and good fundamental solid defense not a lot of speed but they play the running game fastball inside by hitting and running and always the base runners in motion you think of the prototypical Giants team late 50s all through the 60s you think of will wait until the home run happens and then we'll take the lead one in 62 and 1971 and that's been it bow back right to my right and right I was gone man I thought new that thing had me well that was close like at Ralph's back here giggling well our ad here in the booth Jerry was telling me that the other night a foul ball came up into this section just a few rows down a few booths down toward first base from us and went right through the safety glass even though the windows were closed and ours are open here in our booth even though the window centers there's Tim in the opening and there's nothing here this is open it went right through the glass Wow curveball is low good play Carter 2 & 2 to Maldonado the booth next to us the owner of the Giants Bob Lurie fine fine gentleman talked a few years ago going to San Jose but the winning the Giants have had the last couple of years put a stop to that kind of talk still would be a lot nicer conditions down there through only a half hour so away as far as the weather is concerned swing-and-a-miss Gooden gets a big strikeout and it strikeout number six on the evening one away by the way oh and one to chili Davis on the corner no balls and two strikes to Davis Davis has been just about the toughest hitter in the National League against Dwight Gooden E as a career average beginning the evening of 500 against the white soda Wyatt who struck him out to end the 3rd inning with a man aboard pitching him pretty tough tonight just misses outside one ball two strikes to Davis good and 11 and 4 on the year one of the more remarkable things about this terrific talent is that in a hundred and sixteen starts he has struck out 10 or more 33 times and he has six tonight will Clark on deck ground ball to short Santana will go to first as out ready moves to third but there are two away now not a fast runner but he obviously said yes curveball hit to second base over to her to end this for the out no runs a hit and one left it's one to nothing New York Johnson and good they've done the job on the Giants so far Ralph joined Steve after this word from Bud Lights one this year hit in the upper deck the second by the opposition and now for the Mets Wally Beckman who has not had a home run this year stepping in Wally Alford to try to bunt his way on his first time up and popped it up to the second baseman then grounded out his second Mets have had just two base hits and the first pitch for ball one Dykstra with a leadoff single in the first inning in our Johnson's 32nd home run in the sixth [Applause] mic glucose the cause has been released twice he was major-league career started his career with Cincinnati they went to Houston count of versio tie ball player this ball hit in a gap in left field but the wind turning the ball back and over there is already and he reaches up after almost over running the ball and makes ok well that's why the wind is so difficult in this ballpark ordinarily a routine fly ball is affected much more so by the wind but here you see a well hit drive as was the one hit by Keith Hernandez earlier in the ballgame and that wind almost pulling it behind Aldrete who adjusted nicely to make the catch so one away and the batter will be Keith Hernandez Keith bringing a 16 game hitting streak into this game is all for 2 [Applause] that's lady meone nothing we're in the top of the seventh inning [Applause] and the COS picking up strike one that's run at the home plate umpire having some problems with both sides [Applause] and this ball grounded foul after Howard Johnson had hit his home run in the upper deck a tremendous home run Roger Craig who protested against Howard Johnson at Shea Stadium saying his bat was a cork back and guts rented the umpire taking the bat out of play but later was found to be alright and then later on as you look at the Mets where the rally caps are no no one else but Roger later on candy maldonado hit a foul ball they took his bat out of the game that might be the first time a foul ball was ever a bat taken out of the game for a foul ball what's all baseball needs it's another another rule to be to put the onus either on the umpire of the managers and a check swing foul tip it's off the glove of the catcher Bob Brenly Maldonado a couple years ago against it Cubs hit a home run and girl Dee Davis the catcher complained that the bat was a gloated bat and they took it away from him a couple of years ago examined the bat nothing was wrong with it so Maldonado suspicious a suspect and again the ball hit foul might be playable as fire over there it's not high enough for him to get to it and it bounces in the field well that's why in this park you don't give up on a ball as an infielder especially first and third baseman because there is so much room that you might think when the ball goes up there's no chance but here you go after everything not only is there a lot of room but again the wind comes into play and can blow the ball back in and on time for that it takes a lot of hits away from batteries because balls that normally would go in the stands and get another chance you are out because they're caught and that pitch of all two balls two strikes the biggest ballpark at one time in foul territory was Forbes Field in Pittsburgh and then later on with the new ballparks it was Fulton County Stadium in Atlanta now I'd have to say that candlestick and Olympic Stadium in Montreal superseded that mm-hmm for smallest Wrigley Field really helps the batter where do you have very little foul territory 3 & 2 the count Mets lady want nothing on the home run by Howard Johnson and a bouncing ball to the second baseman Robb Thompson picks up the apt to min away so ether mana sold for 3 with a six game 16 game hitting streak here's a score from time waters regular-season game tonight the tides defeated Syracuse 7 to 2 Bob Gibson the winning pitcher and Todd stottlemyre Mel's son was the loser and the tides will now play either pocket or Rochester beginning Wednesday as they have won the International League regular season championship and they will move into the playoffs against the either Claude Tucker to Rochester next Wednesday so congratulations to the Mets farm club Tidewater in the first pitch to Darryl Strawberry a fastball for ball one robbery Oh for two tonight as struck out got caught looking he also has 5 to Center it's amazing that tidewater would win Azzam that's just rated their pitching staff that's an indication of a talent that's there and there's a ball for ball two two balls no strikes when you think about the guys that were up here even temporarily Keith Miller who really can't play yet because of his finger that he hurt while he was with the big club and the pitchers as you talked about Ralph with people like John Miller and Don shells in Terry de venise and Terry Leach of course started there but the tides at a great second half particularly on a strike call for strike one the count two balls and one strike this wall right go into well you have to wonder sometimes what Darrell is looking for here he's ahead in the count the cost is just thrown in the strike and he takes it back again with a fastball and lucky for Darrell that ball was high three balls two strikes he was not looking for that pitch Kevin Mike Reynolds the on-deck batter Inbal forces strawberry picks up the first walk given up by Mike Lacoste but to runner at first base with two men out and brings up Kevin McReynolds kevin has also struck out and he has grounded out the cost with three strikeouts in the game now has issued one walk he has given up one run on two hits McReynolds just three home runs away from his career high of 26 but he said last year with San Diego so a runner at first strawberry had threat to steal and he draws its roll Bob Brenly the catcher has caught 34% of the runners trying to steal that's a good percentage and Roger Craig loves to pitch out [Applause] and there it is the pitch out Roger Craig usually calls it from the dugout and you'll see Brenly look over there for the sign and he apparently got it that time there he is looking right at Rocky [Applause] another throw that first base Roger as a pitcher for the Mets had an outstanding moved to first base someone once said well he should have because he has a lot of runners on Roger course 10 and 24 as a Met pitcher in 1962 there's a high flyball to Center and Davis back to the edge he a warning take it or the lasts out of the area now batting seventh in the batting order so the pitcher will be do up an action starting in the bull pen for the Giants Scott girls warms up down in the right-field bullpen let's have one run on two hits the Giants have no runs on full have left six men on base and that's at level one and Brenly who has walked and grounded out trying to beat out a bunt over one the bat it only with six hits and 20 at-bats against Dwight Gooden in this major league career and he takes the first pitch for strike one Gooden has struck out six [Music] and he has walk three and the pitch back a ball and the count one ball one strike good more the change-up there the white will throw about four or five changeup usually change Epps rather usually during a and he goes to the curveball and misses two balls one strike to pass along a happy birthday to Joel Youngblood two former men whose birthday is today Joel is 36 today flyball to right centerfield that's the way over in left-center and he makes the call and strawberry picks him up and gets out of the way as Dykstra makes it get good communication in the outfield on that one and that's something that the Mets have had a problem with throughout this season and really since Lenny Dykstra began playing center field for the Mets have been a lot of collisions and a lot of miscommunication but right there Dykstra who is the centerfielder and should call off the other fielders if he can make the play did so and had a long way to go to do it Jose Uribe the batter Jose came into the major leagues known as Jose Gonzalez change his name to a rebei because he said there's so many Gonzalez's playing but in his hometown no one know if it was he that did well what in the name of Gonzalez was written in the paper I wonder if he really started going bad if he changed his name back and the first pitch didn't hear it called strike Uribe with a bloop base it on the hit-and-run play back in the second the only man to have a base hit outside of my cowled Reddy who has had three for three only man the giant lineup that's late anyone nothing [Applause] that's winning a one-nothing ball game against the Dodgers in their last home stand one ball one strike Gooden has had three complete games this year one of them a shutout it was nine nothing against the Reds his 14 shutout in his major league career and this ball hit in the air to left field McReynolds right there and he makes the play so 2 min away pitcher is due up but we're going to have a pinch-hitter and it's going to be hairy Szpilman era Spellman's hitting 294 this year with a homer and 11 RBIs he's had 10 pinch hits in 50 official pinch-hit at-bats 10 for 50 with a homer and 9 RBIs as a pinch hitter spelling the victim of a kangaroo court earlier in the season he stole his first major-league stolen base that probably goes down as the low point in his career got himself down to second on his first major league stolen baseman because he was in scoring position they took him out for fits ready didn't I just prove to you I could run no sorry and you have to sort of feel for Mike LoCascio is pitched a great ballgame allowed just two hits walked one struck out three through seven innings of work but leaves down one to nothing because of Howard Johnson's 32nd Homer of the year it won for those last five decisions against the Mets and the first pitch to Spillman and it's ball one and that's when they have scored the first run of it and running the ball game have a record going of 48 wins in 22 losses and this ball popped up it's in foul territory Carter coming over and he has room and he makes the play and no easy play with the one here at Candlestick @ NZ 18 a 1-2-3 inning for the white Gooden in the store at the end of 7 the Mets won and the Giants nothing now here's a word from babbling motor oil but a 3.00 e ra and 12 saves making his 58th appearance he's working 96 innings he has walked 47 while striking out 122 batters he has allowed just eight home runs and a total of only 65 hits and 96 innings of work well the first batter will be Gary Carter and leaning out looking into our radio booth right now man who had a record broken this year the American League record for home runs by rookie al Rosen held the American League record at 37 home runs and Mark McGwire broke it now has 39 now Rosen the outstanding ball player and he has put together a ball club in the likeness of his ability he was a rough tough player and Carter takes an account one ball one strike well Tim and I were talking about it earlier and I certainly think he deserves the lion's share of the credit for the way the Giants have turned out in the count one two he really revised his pitching staff when they found out that the staff they had wasn't gonna hold up and Scott Darrell's a big part of that pitching staff and Carter gets a piece of it so the cat stays at one and two to show you how effective Scott darrell's has been he is primarily a relief pitcher and yet he is tenth in the National League in strikeouts with 122 Mike's got the leader with a hundred and ninety eight you rarely see a relief pitcher among the top ten in strikeouts rarely see a relief pitcher with over a hundred strikeouts and that pitch is a ball so they count two balls and two strikes [Applause] he was a second giant reliever to strike out a hundred batters Davis who is now with San Diego was the first driver a pitcher has a strikeout as yeah this straight gas about knee-high and right on by actually was about thigh high we can bring it up so he picks up his first strikeout and now the batter will be Howard Johnson Johnson struck out his first time up but homered his second it's 30 second home run and that is the difference in this ball game and that's leading one nothing and that pitch ball one [Applause] this year again cements Geralt struck out four in one inning and to do that of course you have to strike out a better and the pitch has to get away from the cats are either wild pitch or a passed ball not tied a major league record one ball one strike the count and the fastball is outside [Applause] our Johnson in his last 12 ballgames now with five home runs and 10 runs batted in and a base hit in the left field so Johnson picks up his second hit the third for the Mets and it puts a runner at first base with one man out well this base hit may have caused Howard Johnson a bat as it sounded like he might have cracked his bat but he just sliced it off into left field managers and hitting coaches particularly batting instructors like to see that after guys had a homerun comes back and gets a base hit that going the other way and now the batter will be Rafael Santana Santana robbed of a base hit on a great play by Chris Speier at third back in the sixth inning this all for two Johnson of course a threat to steal [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and that pitch a ball one ball no strikes Johnson with 26 stolen bases in 33 attempts nets have been successful 76% of the time in their stolen base attempts [Applause] and Johnson again draws a throw [Applause] in this game the Giants have been the man moving the runners [Applause] and Santana takes again for ball two two balls no strikes Santana came into this game hitting 515 against the Giants this year 17 hits in 33 advanced now with a 2 ball no strike count the possibility of the pitch out almost completely erased although not completely with Roger Craig managing the team and it it's a fastball by Geralt senate's fouled away he's he's peeking maybe that's a sign here we go I always though it was a sign of some kind could mean nothing of course the sign to do nothing or sign to do something take your pick throw over to first base it used to be when a pitcher threw the first pitch out was not an order that has changed Roger Craig part of MIT's history another throw to first base the Mets had a fight out here one time time is called and Roger was on the mound after the fight had stopped Cepeda was a base runner and Ed Boucher was the first baseman and they picked Cepeda off and Ed Boucher dropped the ball and surfetta got back in safely Roger again picked him off and again and Boucher dropped the ball and Cepeda was safe everybody figured that the Shea didn't want to pick offs offended because Cepeda might have killed him after the fights a betta got in a fight with Roger because he was hit by a pitch ball and that's how he was on first base the baby bowl and the 2 1 pitch hit on the ground up the middle a diving play by Thompson and what a play that one as he takes a faceit away from Santana earlier Santana got robbed by Chris fire the third baseman Robbie Thompson going all out to keep this ball in the infield now he almost misses the out but recovers a second time to get Howard Johnson if he had come up with this ball immediately to Uribe instead of fumbling it they had a shot at a double play because the ball is hit so sharply and Santana does not possess good speed but he's able to at least get one out after a fine stop of what should have been a base hit now the batter is Dwight Gooden and it's fouled back out of play doesn't in this game is all for two and here comes the comes into the ballpark ground ball to the shortstop Uribe and he picks up the force at second in the inning so any any no runs one hit and one man left on base in this field they used to give an award to fans who would come to a night game and stay the whole game here at sort of a little fleur-de-lis that they would [Music] giant fever or rampant in the Bay Area and the Giants in first place it is no longer a problem to get strip crowds especially when you have the dreaded nets in town it is one to nothing in favor of those dreaded nets as we go to the bottom half of the eighth inning and it's the top behalf of the Giants order with Robbie Thompson leading off against the white Goodman Thompson is over three is popped out grounded out to struck out and he pops one up again an an is going hard into foul territory gets there and makes the catch nice play for Keith Hernandez one away and there is that large foul tort territory area where you loot and it pops up a fastball it's playable for Carter in fair territory two out on two pitches wafting over the stadium as well so two out nobody on for the red hot Mike Aldrete who is 3 for 3 he has singled to center singular right and single to center again stolen the base but has been stranded all three times as the Giants have yet to score aldready as a starter this year entered the game hitting 349 so he hasn't hurt that a bit with his three for three breaking ball in the dirt ball one it had only three hits and 20 at-bats against the Mets coming into this ballgame but he now is 6 for 23 against the Mets in this season Mike already has never had his batting average any lower than 301 it has really been consistent they tampered a short tough play for Santana but he gets in so an easy inning thanks to a little help from Santana for Dwight Gooden here in the 8th and we go to the 9th inning at the stick with the Mets still leading the Giants one to nothing after this for the good old sky 65 degrees and balmy not much wind [Music] [Music] ninth inning baseball at Foggy Candlestick Park it is the best music between innings in the National League which you can find right here in San Francisco plays rather ethereal notes to sort of go with the atmosphere created by the fog as it comes down into this part and with the Mets leading one to nothing Len Dykstra in the top of the order here in the ninth for New York Wally Backman and Keith Hernandez to follow against reliever Scott gur eltz in relief of Mike Lacoste who pitched an outstanding one run two hits seven innings thanks drew fouls the first pitch out of play for strike one Lenny with one of only two base hits that the Mets have managed tonight it came leading off the game when he's single to right in the first inning the other one is the difference in this ballgame the home run into the upper deck in right field by Howard Johnson right back up the middle and a base hit into center field so Lenny now 2 for 4 and the second hit off scott ger else in the Mets now have a total of 4 Oh Lenny gets the bet on this fastball and hits it right by their outs no chance for Uribe to get to it and Eleni who came in this game hitting 444 against the Giants this year as two hits and four at-bats he now had 10 hits in 22 at-bats against the Giants wally backman so for three years walter continues to struggle he tried to bunt in the first but popped it out he uses grounded out in the fourth and he lined hard to left in the seventh and Dykstra not far off first base draws the throw and you can see the fog and how low to the ground it is on that shot right there are we in London Backman bunting again pops it up and Chris Speier right there in foul territory Backman is going so badly that he can't even fund anymore he is really struggling tried to bunt back in the first inning and popped it up to the second baseman that was a bunt for a base hit this time he's trying to sacrifice and they can't do it Oh Wally over for tonight Charlie Samuels and Rafael Santana almost couldn't get out of the way is Backman let the bat rack habit so here's Keith Hernandez who's 16 game hitting streak is on the line it's the ninth inning and Keith is old for three he is grounded into a double play flied the left and grounded to second in his batting here with Dykstra at first and one out 16 game in a streak is longest in his major-league career he does it 350 over those 16 games [Applause] Craig Lefferts now up and throwing for the Giants and he would be up for Darryl Strawberry and Hernandez takes a ball one ball no strikes to Keith as he studies sam polazo the third-base coach thanks guys to dive back again [Applause] there goes Lenny pitches taken for a strike and Dykstra in well ahead of the throw as Brenly wat one hop it down to second stolen base number 23 for Len Dykstra and number 122 for the Mets this year they've been successful 76 percent of the time and Dykstra had that one all the way so the Mets pull off their first stolen base of this ballgame and they have a runner in scoring position for Keith Hernandez Mets looking for some insurance and a one to nothing ballgame with one out top of the ninth Amanda's getting a little dust in the eye hello Stahl here as Roger Craig is going to make a switch [Applause] well Keith now even in the count one and one and with a runner in scoring position and that run could turn out to be a big one in the bottom of the ninth Roger Craig apparently wants Lefferts the left-hander to finish off against Hernandez and be in there when strawberry bats next Roger also might have been hoping and the Keith Wood didn't hit into a double play and here comes Lefferts sprinting from the bullpen and he will be the new pitcher here in the ninth when we return to San Francisco after this she started the season with San Diego of course he was involved in the trade that also brought Kevin Mitchell to the Giants and he inherits a 1-1 count to Keith Hernandez one out one on ninth-inning Mets leading one to nothing and a ball two balls one strike you're watching Mets baseball 87 on wwo our TV Secaucus New Jersey at trade known as the Chicago seven trade because the Giants were in Chicago at the time it was made July 4th seven players in the trade - and - now - Keith and a good breaking ball from Lefferts along with the other players in the trade and others that the Giants have acquired the reasons why over 20 pages of the Mets or the Giants media guide is no longer applicable Don Robinson another player acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates recently Hernandez fouls it out of play and the count remains 2 & 2 but there are over 20 pages in the Giants 87 media guide that you can just tear out and throw away because they no longer apply to this ballclub those players are no longer here and that's what Al Rosen has done and revamping this team and not standing path even though they've been in first place they have continued to make moves to better themselves to ensure staying there line drive up the middle and a base hit here comes Dijkstra around third he will score in the Mets lead two to nothing Keith Hernandez with his 66th RBI extends his hitting streak to 17 straight games so Keith doing it on his last at-bat driving in lenny dykstra who had singled and stolen second and inspired the strategy by Roger Craig playing the percentages of a left-hand pitcher against the left-hand batter dimension come up with their second run of the ballgame so Keith does it and does it well with his 17th game in which he's had at least one base hit that's an all-time high for Pete now here's Darryl Strawberry who takes a fastball down low ball one Darryl's all for two and he walked his last time up in the seventh he is also struck out and flied to Center one in one well a big run for the Mets here in the ninth inning as they now lead two to nothing and Keith Hernandez as usual the man who comes through in the clutch again it's low two balls one strike to strawberry and that's when they have taken the lead into the ninth inning have a record of 61 wins and 5 losses but the 5 loss is very high Kevin Mitchell is warming up in anticipation I would presume of a double switch a strawberry gets on they'll go to a right-handed Darrell with a weak ground ball to first will Clark takes it as Hernandez advances to second now with two out so Roger Craig not bounced but he's in the game anyway yeah I don't know why he took so long maybe he wanted Robinson to have more time but Robinson was been standing there appeared to be ready maybe he wanted to be sure Mitchell was warmed up that my bed but he goes to home plate umpire Dutch Rennert to make the double switch so Kevin Mitchell comes into the game Mitchell will go to third base and Chris Speier comes out of the game Lefferts from lost none and had four saves so Don Robinson coming to the Giants from the Pittsburgh Pirates Keith Hernandez at second base and the batter Kevin McReynolds who is old for three McReynolds a struck out grounded out and flied deep to centerfield over the inside corner a fastball for strike one McReynolds has been struggling of late in fact he was given the night off the last game of the homestand in New York line drive into right-center field in a basin and it's going to go all the way to the wall or Nanda's scores easily McReynolds is going to try for a triple here's the relay from Thompson not in time it hits him but doesn't get far enough away for him to advance any further and it's three to nothing New York on an RBI - line drive triple by Kevin McReynolds so the strategy pulled off by Roger Craig although it goes by the books it backfires on Roger as he brings in a left hander to pitch to Keith Hernandez and Keith single to drive in a run and then bringing the right-hander in against Kevin McReynolds and McReynolds hitting the triple the drive in a run for McReynolds his third free base hit of the year and the Mets lead by a score 3 nothing McReynolds now with 77 RBIs and here's Gary Carter and he rips one by Mitchell at third down the left-field corner McReynolds scores to make it four to nothing Carter easily going to second base with a double and for Gary Carter his 300th two base hit in his major league career Griner picking up his 67th RBI and emits doing a job on the Giants bull pen which has ordinarily been very tough so Kevin Mitchell dies for it he can't get it and a match now scored a run against three pitchers in this inning Scott Garlits Craig Lefferts and Don Robinson Howard Johnson will be walked intentionally who put the force in play here with two outs and quieter at second Oh Joe two for three with his home run which is right now the game-winning RBI in the sixth inning and he singled in the eighth so the Mets who scored a run after Dykstra led off the inning with a base hit have two base hits it was robbed twice on fine plays in the san francisco infield [Applause] strike one Chris fire then playing third took a base hit away from him in the sixth inning and Robbie Thompson turned to base hit what would have been a base hit up the middle into a force play in the eighth inning and that ball in the dirt but Santana swings anyway so it's Owen - this guy right here is the walking hospital report of the National League every idea and this is an idea he's had an operation for the last three or four odd years in the dirt again one and two both knees a couple of times in the shoulders we'll both from the Pirates [Applause] the Pirates haven't hurt themselves either route they've done a lot of things CID thrift over there improving that ballclub they've dropped some big salaries and picked up some young ballplayers that could turn out to be very good players Santana a swing and a Miss the play will be completed as with two out and doesn't make any difference at first base is unoccupied or not it goes as a strikeout but it may be too little too late for the Giants the Mets have scored three times here in the ninth inning on four hits and we go to the bottom of the ninth with Dwight Gooden and the Mets now leading San Francisco four to nothing after this for AT&T the Giants with no runs on four hits Maldonado has lined to third and struck out twice to check my addition is that four man on three and one makes four even on San Francisco we forgot our calculators I know I need one [Applause] Maldonado reactivated on August 7th after being put on the DL back on June 27 and he takes a breaking ball for strike one he had broken his right ring finger and missed more than a month a fastball that is high makes it one and one down low two balls one strike Maldonado has handled the doctor quite well as you see chili Davis on deck before tonight can be a career 333 hitter against Hawaii and it is now three and one well in this circumstance we want to make the batter hit the ball hits it out of the ballpark although some pictures in this can under these conditions would be thinking shut out because shutouts hoovering money he's had 14 major league shutouts and white has had one this year fastball it's high and to walk in the fourth walk issued by Gooden but it's the first walk he has issued since the second inning Giants and the leadoff batter on and chili Davis coming up now speaking of the Giants on this date we're talking about Pacific Coast time because it's already gone to the next day at home the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1951 beat the Giants with New York Giants and stopped their 16 game winning streak 1951 was the great year of the Giants when Bobby Thompson hit the home run to win two playoff series and at one point the Dodgers had a 13 and a half game lead on August the 10th strike 1 to chili Davis even though Chile is a 500 career hitter against the white he's only hit 156 against the Mets this year and tonight he is old for 2 [Applause] [Music] another fastball fouled off out of play for strike two you know it's funny how things just disappear from your mind I played in that 1951 game against the Giants I don't remember that it was a stopper of a 16 game winning streak by the Giants just another of the many many victories that the Pirates racked up during your time they won that one 2 to nothing did you did you home run I don't know I like to think that did so for now let's just say it was a two-run home run by Kiner in the ninth but okay let's take credit you'll get a letter on that one felt somebody else a hey you struck out for time slapped on the ground too short Santana Backman and over to first not in time for the double play but the lead runner erased its second on the force the ball was not sharply hit and the Giants have a pretty lengthy infield grass here oh he went for a terrible pitch and you wonder how you can swing in a ball like that but Chili's been in now horrendous slump well he really has his average coming into tonight have fallen to 240 and now he's over three so with one out and Davis at first the batter will Clark who is old for three bark has grounded out twice and struck out looking fastball for strike one [Music] a few fans left after the top of the ninth from the Mets scored three to make it four to nothing but quite a few have stayed here to see the end of the ball game foul back an account on two now you can see some empty seats in there this series expected to draw very well as there were 39 thousand three hundred a year probably well over forty thousand total in the park but probably will do even better Saturday and Sunday lifted the left and deep McReynolds on the track has room however and makes the catch as the fans come out of the stands outside of left field a longtime tradition here at Candlestick ever since those seats were added as soon as a ball goes up well hit the left they really pour out of those seats gets it well you can look for another job trying to hit balls out of this Park in left field with that wind blowing in you can see how much it affected that ball asthma growls had to come back after going to the warning track Bob Brenly the batter you know Ralph after watching Willie Mays play here as I did as a youngster growing up in Palo Alto near here it's always been amazing to me when I come back to this park to think of how many home runs he hit and the fact that he played all those years here Brenly takes a fastball to just misses for ball one that's a great guide for a pull hitter of course Willie could hit the ball the other way and did adopt to this bit adapt to this ballpark but even then it wasn't an easy park to hit the ball out of anywhere that fastball right in there one on one but he's got his retired member on the wall out there is a hall-of-famer they've retired McCovey Mary Shaw Mays Hubbell OTT and Terry as players and they also have retired two managers names on the wall out there in centerfield as well the see those as dependent canoes if it does breaking ball grounded to third and a fair ball Johnson goes to second to again get the lead runner in the ballgame is over the white Goodman pitches his fourth complete game of the season his second shutout and his third victory in a row in his record now is 12 and four and with the Cardinals winning earlier tonight the Mets keep pace with st. Louis four and a half games back in second in the National League East Houston lost their ballgame so the Giants remain two and a half games in front of the Astros in the National League West Ralph and I'll be right back to wrap it up here from Candlestick tonight or this morning wherever you may be the final again the Mets 4 and the San Francisco Giants nothing now here's a word from Budweiser [Music] tonight Steve Shih risky and Ralph Kiner back with you at candlestick in San Francisco and a big victory for the New York Mets tonight they knew already that the Sanford the st. Louis Cardinals at won their ballgame Ralph and you and Timmy talking in the beginning of the telecast about the importance of this road trip and after this it's East against East after the Mets go home and they're off to a great start thanks to the doctor well the doctor got off to a slow start out here he had the bases loaded in the first and got wool Clark to groundout for the out that ended the inning as a Giants left three and then in the second aim the Giants got their first two batters on Brenly walked and then a single on a hit-and-run play a bloop hit to Center by Uribe but the big play in the ballgame was on a bunt play by Mike Lacoste the white Gooden throat threw the ball to third base and they picked up a double play and got out of that inning after that it was alder white Gooden as he gave up just two hits the rest of the way and he already settled into a groove he throwed that ball did he he throwed that ball right very good that's what comes from five years of working with Tim McCarver well Howard Johnson had a home run his 32nd of the year that proved to be the difference in the game and the Mets added three in the ninth to give Dwight some pad going into the bottom of the ninth and it is Dwight Gooden with his third complete game and second shut out who is the Budweiser star of the game Dwight going all the way giving up just four base hits he struck out six and walked four in the ballgame his record now is 12 and 4 on the year he is one now three in a row following a loss in a no-decision so the white on track at the right time for the Mets and this Bud's for you doctor with a fine fine effort here tonight well the Mets have two more with the Giants and the Giants although they were shut out two now tonight Ralph our one fine ballclub and it's going to be an exciting series well the Giants did not lose any ground as a second-place ballclub Houston lost their ball games the Giants are still two and a half games up on Houston Cincinnati also lost as did Atlanta so the Giants did not lose any ground with that the Mets did not pick up any ground on the Cardinals they won their game in the bottom of the ninth inning with a run and the Mets remained four and a half games back I have a feeling partner that it's gonna come down to perhaps those final three games in st. Louis Mets have six games left with the Cardinals and those if it's a final three good luck boy what a zoo well we'll be there to bring it to you and we're also gonna be back with you on Sunday for the final of this series the final totals once again in the ball game tonight here in San Francisco for the Mets four runs on seven hits and no errors the Giants with no runs on four hits land or the winner Dwight Gooden goes all the way he's 12 and for the loser Mike Lacoste although he pitched an outstanding 7 innings tonight loses it his record is now 11 and 8 and New York Mets baseball has been brought to you this evening by Budweiser Beach what aids for that clean crisp taste this Bud's for you by Nissan to invite you to test drive a hot new Nissan car or truck and see why Nissan makes you feel like driving by manufacturers Hanover the financial source worldwide by AT&T the right choice by the New York Daily News New York's hometown paper and by Valvoline motor-oil where motor oil is not just motor oil this is Steve Zabriskie for Ralph Kiner and Tim McCarver invited you to be with us again Sunday afternoon when the Mets again take on the San Francisco Giants at 4 o'clock Eastern Time right here on W wor-tv the executive producer of Mets baseball 87 is Rick miner tonight's game produced and directed by the spider bill Webb and the announcers on the preceding telecast were approved and contracted for by Sterling Doubleday Enterprises Mets baseball 87 is a production of channel I and sports from San Francisco California good night and good morning Giants vision presents Giants baseball brought to you by Budweiser at beechwood aged for that clean crisp taste this Bud's for you and by Safeway where you get an honest deal every day [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music]
