live and in color from Memorial Stadium in Baltimore its 1969 World Series baseball as the New York Mets meet the Baltimore Orioles for game number one [Music] and now to Baltimore and today's commentators Curt Goudy and Tony Kubek they got a real good thing real good it's a gorgeous day here in Baltimore Maryland today's the temperature is 75 degrees I'm Kurt Goudy of NBC this is Bill O'Donnell the Baltimore Oriole broadcaster Lindsay Nelson will be with us in New York when we move to Shea Stadium and down on the field is my game of the week sidekick Tony Kubek he'll be roaming the stands with interesting guests and site lights in this area I think you can just about sum up to 69 World Series is saying if you pick it on paper it's the Orioles they have the best statistics in hitting in power Louis staffer and run average they made the fewest error but the Mets didn't win the National League on paper on paper they didn't look as good as the Cardinals and the Cubs they wanted on the field and that's what they're hoping to do here today and of course the Mets not only have fans now in the New York area they've become a national team as well the starting pitchers today writing back to me is Tom Seaver just 24 years old starting a World Series game in this his third major league season and he was the winningest pitcher in the major leagues this year he won 25 games we have almost opposites here today young and old right and left Mike Cuellar is 32 years old and he was the winningest left-hander in the majors today as he 123 ballgame so it's Cuellar for the Orioles Tom Seaver for the New York Mets and now let's get over here to Bill O'Donnell for his pregame comment bill does an outstanding job of broadcasting for the Baltimore Orioles bill thank you very much Curt and it's a delight indeed to join you this afternoon Kirk used the word opposite in his pregame comments and actually both these clubs won their pennants in opposite ways the Orioles from practically the middle of April just breezed to the American League pennant on the other hand the Mets had to fight their way to win the National League pennant although they had kind of a breeze winning the National League Championship Series over Atlanta they had to come from midday from August until mid-september before they finally caught and then went ahead of the Chicago Cubs to win the Eastern Division now as far as the ballpark here at Memorial Stadium is concerned this afternoon this ballpark really does not favor a hitter any more than it favors a thrower we have short lines down both left and right but then the park and the fences break away as you notice it is only 309 feet down the left-field side the power alleys break away to between 380 and 392 dead center field and that will be covered I'm sure a lot des in this ballpark by both Tommy Agee and Paul Blair it is 410 feet and that Fay the fence out in center measures 7 feet high as we pan around to the right center field pockets it is 380 and 390 in the power alleys and it is the same down the right-field side as it was down the left-field side 309 feet well now let's go downstairs to Tony Kubek thank you Bill Curt right at this time we were waiting for possibly the vice president United States it's rumored that he may be here today and he may still come Pat Nixon is scheduled to be here David Eisenhower of first Tricia and Julie Nixon at this point the Commissioner of baseball Bowie Kuhn and there's a room right behind me behind the Orioles dugout waiting for the dignitaries to show up and we hope to bring them to you during the course of this ball game right now let's go back upstairs we're going to have the starting lineups introduced then we'll have a ceremonial passing out of the first ball to open their 69 series it's Tom Seaver warming up in front of the New York Met dugout and Mike Cuellar just to the side of the Baltimore dugout the Baltimore Orioles dugout is in back of third and the visiting or Mets dugout is in back of first base and now we're ready for the player introductions good afternoon ladies and gentlemen welcome to Memorial Stadium for the first game of the 1969 World batting eighth and playing second base number six our rice batting ninth batting ninth pitching for the Mets this afternoon number 41 Tom Seaver and this is the myth starting line up the rest of the coaches and players will be introduced and a group this is the team that came from nine and a half games behind in mid-august to win the pennant winning 38 of their last 49 games had great pitching especially in the last six weeks good fielding they're second in the National League in fielding they're hitting with the question mark but it certainly wasn't doing a playoffs in their three-game sweep against the Atlanta Braves the New York Mets the team that used to be built a legend on ineptness eventually used to literally lose a hundred games now is a hundred game winner and a team that has captured the imagination of the entire country now for the bed of our oil Oh [Applause] playing with you [Applause] batting second I playing centerfield Blair [Applause] batting third and playing right field Mike Robert [Applause] batting fourth playing first base [Applause] batting fifth playing third base whoops [Applause] that accepts catching for Baltimore Elrod Hendricks [Applause] batting seventh I'm playing second base David Johnson [Applause] batting eighth playing shortstop mark belanger [Applause] batting ninth and pitching for the Orioles this afternoon Mike [Music] [Applause] the rest of the orioles will be introduced now Baltimore won a hundred and nine games during the regular season that's most since the 1961 Yankees won they just wanted going away they were in first place too early in the season beautifully balanced baseball team he led the American League in catching and fielding they were second to the twins on offense and runs draw I have a set lineup every day they platoon only the tattoos and it's almost a team without a week [Applause] ladies and gentlemen please rise for our national anthem which will be played by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and will be sung by mr. Joseph gutheinz professor of music at Morgan State College [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] the first game of the 1969 World Series is being black youth from Memorial Stadium as the New York Mets meets the Baltimore Orioles 1970 is where it all begins [Music] get into the swing of 70 at your dodge and Plymouth dealers right now Carolina [Music] we pause briefly for station identification this is we're getting ready now for the ceremonial tossing out of the first pitch we've had theirs Bowie Kuhn the Commissioner of baseball who is going to throw out the first ball mrs. Pat Nixon is on his right and the owner mrs. Payson is on the commissioners left mrs. Kuhn is in the box seats along with a commissioner mrs. Payson is leaving now that's pre she edixon also with her mother we've had all kinds of rumors first president nixon was going to throw out the first ball in vice president Agnew and David Eisenhower and finally we're down to the first pitch with the Commissioner of baseball Bowie Kuhn David Eisenhower and mrs. Eisenhower Julie 'we are cannot to warm him up he asked to wait until this traffic's out of the way and now he turns aside and starts back to the dugout Kurt normally in intense situations like this and I get a before the first game of a World Series in pressure situations that is normally Cuellar is not a fella who is easily disturbed but I'm sure as most baseball fans and baseball experts are aware nothing is more important before a ball game and a pitcher getting an arm warm and also getting ready and over the last four or five minutes that Cuellar has not been able to get ready as he would like to get there all right here is the commissioner who was put in as a temporary Commissioner but who did such an outstanding job that he was signed a long term very healthy contract and articulate dynamic man who's proven to be a great leader for baseball there's his pitch to Ellie Hendricks the catcher of the Orioles and I'll one more and weeks again Jerry grody the catcher of the Mets now gets to receive a first pitch to open he'll 69 World Series and so these ceremonies are out of the way we've already had the meeting at home plate among the umpires and the two managers the Orioles take the field here's Bill O'Donnell well sure did this 1969 World Series has the type of play that both of these clubs were involved in during the 1969 regular season I'm sure that we're going to see one of the most exciting World Series of all times we talked to earlier about the use of the word opposites the the Orioles who just had balanced power and balanced a pitching strength both the starters and relievers to win the Mets on the other hand who used a good defense and one day after another especially late in the season pitching after pitching after pitching that's the way they won their flag all right let's set up the Orioles defensively Boog Powell's at first base Dave Johnson's of second mark Belanger that's your stop and Brooks Robinson at third it's a brilliant infield for the Orioles in left field Don Buford ball blares in centerfield and Frank Robinson is the right fielder Ellie Hendricks will be catching and Mike Cuellar 32 years old the starting pitcher of the 69 series for the oil he throws five pitches his outfit or the pitch he like believes in a jam especially the right-handers is a screwball born in Cuba lives now in Puerto Rico his thirteenth professional season his sixth season in the majors he pitched for Cincinnati st. Louis at Houston prior to joining the Oriole to see it was a great pickup you'd have to look this up how many leadoff men in a World Series I've ever lived their team in runs batted in he led the Mets in RBIs with 76 hit 271 26 homers good power to center into right-center the first pitch of the series the flag we're pitch last Saturday and so did Sivir zebra usually works for four days rest Cuellar with only three foul back strike two a little bit torn leper Agee this blackness the outside one ball two strikes we are live the Orioles and complete games and innings pitched in most victories at him strikeouts a 1 2 delivery ball to the interior on deck but Harrelson the two to delivery three into adding two spikes out of the full count trying to fight that outside corner against me AG bounced back and had a great year this year here's a 3-2 pitch to him baba rampu [Music] drill down to Robin Robinson coming up with a groundball voted the greatest all-time player for the Orioles tank soars behind the plate his fifth World Series at American League Fresno story at first the fourth World Series Larry now on the American League at second his for sehri shag Crawford the National League at third his third Loup de mer oh I'm firing his first series in the left-field line and Lee Weyer the National League on the right-field line his first World Series six umpires assigned to the Dave James all one to bud Harrelson hit 248 no homers 24 RBIs the 1o pitch inside ball to Harrelson one of the best defensive shortstops in baseball better known for his glove than with his bat we have one out nobody I were in the top of the first inning they're playing Harrelson fairly shallow in the outfield slam foul outside third two balls in the strike to bud Harrelson play on Jones is on deck the Mets have there there's Jones have their right-handed batters in today they have nine right-handed batters in the lineup they won with left-handers against the Braves but Gil Hodges platoon foul out of play in the count where though it's very effective against right-handed with that screwball is the bill Curt there's also some philosophy of at least from some American League managers that they feel that left-hand hitters handled Cuellar as well as right-hand hit his hand hit the Robinson again on an easy hot do down [Applause] Yogi Berra coaching at first Eddie Yost at third Yogi's been in more World Series games twice as much as all the players combined he has been in 75 World Series games 14 series with the Yankees of course where he filed up most of those games two down and Cleon Jones the batter a product of the mint farm system he's developed into a star third leading batter than after getting 340 12 homers 75 RBIs he can spray them all around he's just not a late bloomer he finished sixth in batting in an afternoon last year hi do I have a ball one on one go away bases empty top of the first Don clendenon is on deck what a view why are was consistent right from the opening of the season one-ball two-strike let's see if he turns it over to him now Brown ball out of the reach of the language the first hit of the 19 Leone Jones on first with a single of center there's an example here to that screwball that Jones trying to get to before he got the base hit up enough here's Don clendenon 248 16 homers 51 runs batted in he didn't play in the series against Atlanta the right-handed pitcher is going all the way he started the season with Montreal was traded to the myths in mid-june and he helped the Mets the rest of the way one ball no strikes two down and Cleon Jones on first deep from straightaway clay arse moved John fact on the good face run stole 16 bases this year out of 24 attempts one-on-one doing when Denon got hot in September up seven home runs during that month right when they counted one ball one strike all two two and one is play are sharp with his control today as he usually is Billy's struggling a little extreme - and he's doing too well the one thing that we haven't seen yet from player and he throws it quite a bit he's got a big rainbow soft curve breaking away from that right-hander 2 & 2 now Kurt his pitching coach George Bamberger has said quite a few times during the season everybody talks about the Cuellar screwball but not too many people have talked about what Bamberger feels is a good play hour fastball and also that changeup curve we were impressed with his fastball against the twins last Saturday he was quick with it two balls two strikes two down first inning no score when den in the batter reaching and filing a back every now and then a slight breeze springs up and is blowing from first to third [Music] we are were these two to pitch to clendenon just got a piece 2 & 2 on deck Ron Swoboda clendenon is quite an athlete he was a 12-letter man at Morehouse College he was offered Pro contracts by the football Cleveland Browns a basketball New York Knicks the Harlem Globetrotters and a Pittsburgh fire three different professional sports teams seeking his services the two to delivery [Applause] one hit there were no errors one man left little of the first inning to score the match nothing the Orioles are coming about this man seeks inner happiness by suffering he has given up food clothing shelter but one thing he cannot give up did you let spoiler with a miracle plastic coating that reduces pull each day he struggles to deny his face displeasure and fails he is in the most tragic sense spoiled no blade feels like the Gillette spoiler except did you let injector spoiler you Oh didn't I tell you we share the same medicine cabinet it has the new modern apartment hey I see you've got silver right guys new ad the first print yes sir stop soda keeps you dry yeah yeah and all about that I got the regular right guard yep once shot numb good for the whole two kinds of people two kinds of right diet Nona Alice set up the Mets defensively Don clendenon is at first base al Weiss at second but Harrelson the shortstop had Charles to the third play on Jones in left field Tom AG's in center Ron Swoboda the right fielder Jerry grote the catcher [Music] and Tom Seaver the pitcher incidentally and that's famous over the years for giving games away and making mistakes in the field are a very very sound defensive team they finished second the National League and feelings and one of the reasons are in this world series is because they didn't make the many mistakes in the field during this past season and there's a winningest pitcher in the major league this year 24 year old Tom Seaver who won 25 at lost 7 lives in Manhattan Beach California born in Fresno [Applause] particular those of you when a sterling looking of the air in 57 showed outstanding promise then Anna's developing into one of the real stars of the game Don Buford at 291 during the season 11 homers and 64 RBI and he can get on base ball 1 to it Seaver a good fastball hard slider use a sort of a rolling curve of the change-up hydride in the deep-fried will Bota backing up drawing a beer at front of the water can't get it what a way to lead off a World Series Kurt we just had this is football de he thought he had enough room and actually he did have enough room the height of that fence right there just to the right of the Mets bullpen is seven feet high the glove will go over the fence he went up about nine feet with the glove and he couldn't get to it ball Blair big strike one Blair hit 285 had a slump in the last month of the season 26 homers 76 RBIs goes after occurs like two he hit over 300 most what a way to lead off a world series Kurt we just had this is Kubota he thought he had enough room and actually he did have enough room the height of that fence right there just to the right of the Mets bullpen is 7 feet high the glove will go over the fence he went up about 9 feet with the glove and he couldn't get to it Paul Blair extract 1 we're hip to 85 had a slump in the last month of the season 26 homers 76 RBIs goes after occurs right do he hit over 300 most and then slumped off her dak really a little bit on better than 200 innings he only gave up 24 home runs pitches during the regular year Wow nothing to do where was telling us today he was taking his head off the ball being swinging he was jerking the net away get down and eyes on the ball and he cured it in the playoff with her back and he have five hips in that third playoff game against the quim Frank Robinson on that first time in his career he ever had five hits in the game who strikes nobody I'd nobody out Baltimore I had one another one and two [Applause] despite that Blair led the Orioles invasive and in stolen bases turret right now as severs leaning a little bit more on that breaking stuff of his rather than his best equipment which is supposed to be that good hard fastball one out yarn Stalin touching his first party Oreo and right Robin the judge the 308 for the year 32 homers a hundred RBIs while back I'll say one thing Robinson's been consistent a lifetime average in the National League of 303 and a lifetime average in the American League of 303 the only man who's ever been the most valuable player in both leagues a one strike pitch to him by Tom Seaver fouled back nothing into Boog Powell is on deck the Orioles have one out nobody on and they're leading one to nothing this practice wanted to [Applause] Sivir is a young pitcher with command that is he commands his pitchers a lot of young fellas have good stuff but can't command them Sivir can curve is feet foul Billy Hunter a former outstanding shortstop making the stab down there one ball two strikes to Frank Robinson I feel deep in a step toward land buck him out on a high fastball this game is authorized under television rights granted by Major League Baseball for the entertainment of our audience and any publication reproduction retransmission my brother this game without the express written consent of the Commissioner of baseball is prohibited well if you're new to Boog Powell and the Orioles when you heard that boob get it no booing they're just yelling out his nickname my gosh Seaver is firing now he has that riding fastball that rises and when you sit in the dugout the ballplayers say it walks it just takes off on it I'll hit 304 thirty seven homers 121 RBI there's his curve one ball one strike two foul [Music] a 1-1 pitch bat-ball wanted to I'll thin with the Orioles eight years and he's just 27 as one of the smoothest swings in baseball power to left-center and he can pull the ball around here's the 1 2 pitch to Boog Powell given to they're playing him to hit the right-center order right two down bases empty right vote up back in the ly [Applause] we see the powernow cloud coming right with a ball about belt high and a little bit on the inside corner this is where foul normally likes the ball belt high and just over the inside corner of the plate most pitchers trying to keep the ball away and down on a foul but again that ball Delhi and belted it for the base knife Brooks Robinson at 234 subpar year for him and batting average ranging back as a team right on the warning pass with that a long way to create a way to retire the side the Orioles had one run new hit there were no errors and one left and at the end of the first inning of score Baltimore won and New York nothing if you don't have a personal checking account at the Bank of Commerce here's what you're missing out on a wallet like this in Boston gold a checkbook your own personal checkbook to go inside it a little book that lets you keep an up-to-date record of your account instantly at the end of the month you automatically receive a statement showing Canada on both the French and English networks in Puerto Rico benzo Alif Panama st. Thomas in the Virgin Island and on a delayed basis in Bogota Colombia and the final World Series game will be seen in England and Japan the Daniel classic has really become with the satellites now the world series in Europe Vietnam Korean around the world the Armed Forces Radio Service on his 300 radio station back beaming the play-by-play Ron Swoboda a local boy comes home weird right here in this Baltimore area it's 2:35 for the season nine homers 52 RBIs Dinah Bunny's way on right he attended the University of Maryland for one year for signing his contract with the Oriole screwball foul back he played in this stadium one game as a high school boy who strikes two Swoboda Charles on deck amend Brodie second strikeout the Cuellar and here's the oldest player of the non pitchers in this world series veteran Ed Charles 35 years old at 207 three homers 18 RBIs they call him a glider on the myth squad back to Emma cause of the way run they have a favorite thing in the mess club off when he'd get a hip the glider hits the slider one strike one to nothing Baltimore leading in the top of the second well back nothing into the Charles on deck Jerry grote the Met catcher - met with a fan play our stuff for that large assortment of pitches he's a craftsman on the mound knows how to set you up one ball two strikes curve is inside line two and two he was one of two American league pitchers to beat every opposing club during the season the other ones his teammate Jim Palmer the 2-2 pitch that's the third strikeout in a row now for Mike Cuellar two down for the Mets nobody on and Jerry grote up roadie hit 252 this year with six homers 40 RBIs last fall is one enough the on-deck banner is the second baseman alewife two down bases clear Orioles one Mets nothing top of the second Kirby drop down one ball one strike fastball hit this gorge a big hop the Ballinger and the Mets go down one two three at the end of an inning and a half it's the Orioles won and the Mets nothing the rivers a giant blind and strong sweeping and driving the logs along pushing them up on the rocks and the shore till the men set them free to go tumbling once more the treacherous jams will tax all their skill as the bold party loggers press on to the mill but their tests never end until the long drive is done and the satisfied loggers have conquered the rough and then the reward is an Okie Heil it's smoother than the resin yes so keep at the ails these been enjoy okey bail satisfies death okey bail the right ale are right now [Music] let's go down on the stands now to Tony thank you come with me down the field Commissioner of baseball Bowie Kuhne and Bowie if this world sees anything like those playoffs it's really going to be something it really is it's starting out on a pretty exciting note that ball and Buford hip as a well tagged ball interesting play out there I thought looks very exciting we've got business Mixon and her family here it's another great day for baseball I think Commissioner we're gonna try and talk to some of the people in your party a little bit later on thank you so much rooks Arnie good to see you Thank You Bowie Kuhne Commissioner of baseball back upstairs Ellie Hendricks leads off of the Orioles in the last of the second Seaver feeds him a curve ball one Henrik's if 240 for 12 homers 38 runs batted in he has some power to right and her swung around toward right for strike naturally both teams have been thoroughly scouted by the other there's the defensive setup with Charles a third baseman playing even with a bank this low curve is popped up Ed Charles is falling for it the met third baseman hasn't won down brings up Dave Johnson one reason the Oriole 109 game but if we look at the bottom of the batting order Dave Johnson hit 280 batting seventh and mark Belanger the shortstop get 287 hitting 8 they had a bet on their roommates these two which one would get the most hits the lander won the bet bettan spring training flyball into centerfield Tom Agee waiting for and there two down mark Belanger who has always been known as an outstanding defensive player but but a real question about with a bat as probably they wanted to biggest apply to a major league season he hit 287 at two homers 51 runs batted in Charlie Lau the Oriole hitting coach helped him a lot black clothes his fans have a bit try to get him to wait more and drop down on the ball outside the only shortstop and the majors the hit for a higher average was Boston Rico Petrocelli with 297 fella can really feel kenny bill and with the extra bat of course is a fielding Rangers even better turf there's a ground ball to third and that's a quick 1-2-3 inning for Tom Seaver so at the end of two innings the score the ball of all Orioles won and the New York Mets nothing if you appreciate basis living and cried-- authority you could be Dodd's material I say jolly good choice bought a big dodge yes excellent choice big Dodge didn't I tell you big dodge has more interior room than the limousine yes it's very roomy and smooth now what did you say that's just about the smoothest ride you've ever had smooth here is very smooth indeed and the new wide stance big dodge handles even better and it's quieter than the limousine to big dodge is definitely required and with Chrysler air conditioning it's every bit as comfortable wouldn't you say yes more comfortable and it isn't very expensive for all the car you get game yes mr. Snodgrass sell the limousine yes mr. Snodgrass the night game good night mr. Snodgrass you don't have to be eccentric or a millionaire to be dodge material now in the commissioner's box the fellow with the dark glasses in the second row is Ted Williams the owner of the Senators right beside him commissioner child after 50 years of outstanding service to baseball with his arms full of pleasure the nationally Christian Nixon mrs. Nixon our First Lady Commissioner Kuehne mrs. Kuhn David Eisenhower and his wife Julie and wouldn't doubt Secret Service man al Weiss leading off strike alewife hitting 215 two homers 23 runs batted in all women Weiss was with a white side they had a collision of second base twice his knee rammed into the head of Frank Robinson and Robinson had a head concussions and had double vision for nearly a year police to remember each other's doing one that's Tom Seaver the pitcher on deck and out of that their concussion Weiss received some torn ligaments in his knee they both were injured the 2-1 pitch like play ours foul back on the couch - and two pitches are all set for tomorrow two left-handers join McNally for the Orioles Koosman for the Mets and they're all set for next Tuesday in New York - Gentry for the Mets and Jim Palmer for the Orioles ma brief rampu now wife one run two hits for the Orioles no runs one hit for the mess where is Fe first walk I'm Sieber battles you at the plate he's an all-around athlete a good feeling as Goodspeed dick gonna base it now and then well he's no soft texture why sit first nobody out one to nothing Baltimore top of the third looks Robinson creeping in at third looking for the bunt how about having a one this first game of the World Series being brought to you in living color on NBC another reason why we say if it's really special it's on NBC find a bun again nothing into a must see if Seaver tries to bunt on a thirst right alewife the fast man at first look out oh they nearly got him player has a deceptive move to first and nearly had wife's leading the wrong way that was a close play this dracs deceiver he may switch back here and try and chop this one up over the first again Robinson is ready to charge anyway from third receiver bunts or chops away at it gonna swing looking out horse back out to Clara now we go to the top of the met batting order and Tom Agee who grounded out the 31st time maybe led the mess in a lot of departments this year games played RBIs runs total basement times of baton strike on round ball the shark the Landry to Johnson for one on the first double play [Applause] the Mets are all out of no runs no hits no errors nobody left at the end of two and a half Baltimore one and New York nothing what man can resist it the clean crisp aroma of ocean surf getting me a new Gillette foamy surf spray shaving cream a new fragrance like the refreshing spray of a breaker the foaming crispness of ocean Whitecaps if you ever enjoy the refreshing scent of ocean spray on your skin you know what to expect a new foamy surf spraying by Gillette you Ted he's up on top there but what about this Baltimore hitting as a team well I want to tell you I saw them all yours you know and they just seem to like the club but if they needed to run they could get a run and they got they got hitting well through their lineup as far as I'm concerned they're an outstanding ballclub and they can do more than just have to kennedy said they can play defense that's right they have a well-balanced Club certainly the best balanced Club in our league I would say ed congratulations to you on your fine year and we may talk to you later thank you so much Mike Cuellar got a hand when he came up the first pitch to him with ball one one on one 'we are Buford and Blair here in the last of the third one and two to Mike Cuellar our oil run came in the first inning on a leadoff home run by Don Buford and that's been the scoring so far serving the dirt 2 & 2 the 2-2 pitch that is strikeout number three for Tom Seaver and here is Buford coming up getting a hand for his going on those are the season records of poetry both had the most wins in the majors both swept the playoff the only fitting they should be meeting here in the theory Tom Buford's done I think a very nice thing he's invited his old college coach and his son to be his guest here at the World Series ball one rod day do you know University of Southern California baseball coach and he's son Justin here they'e one nothing pitch bounding ball to the right side [Applause] we'll see how they score that one and error has been charged to alewife the scores today have just done New York Daily News his presidency Baseball Writers Association blue Hatter of the Baltimore Sun and Joe Durso the New York nine and they score by committee in other words each gives a decision through out of three wind curveball is good high in the air in the left-field Jones looking up there and that bright Sun to down Buford gets back here's Frank Robinson now who struck out his first time we received a telegram before the game so at Trinity University down to San Antonio say that the only university with representatives on both World Series teams this Trinity University Jerry grote of the myths and Dave Johnson for the Orioles however he's not right USC has Sivir for the MEPS and Buford for the Orioles ball one to Frank Robinson two down Buford still 19 bases this past season at first Robinson can handle that bat he'll go behind the runner [Music] ball two we get another centerfield shot you'll see how he crowds a plate over the years he's always been a batter that's led the league many times of being hit by pitch balls the tuol pitch doing ripping away at that high inside pitch they've been hit many times this year 13 times there Kurt he's been hit by opposing pitcher led the American League in being hit by pitch balls this year in six times 11 actually being hit he'll bounce right up and attack the next pitch two balls one strike if you knock him down if he hit him he's on first whether you knock him down he's fearless tough there Curt pitchers work on Buford not so much because he has good speed but also Buford very frequently will take a dangerous kind of lead so that's why Seavers working on him so much doing one count to Frank Robinson ha Buford a little body wiggle there watching thank you a little body wiggle going and he wants that picture think he may be able to step off here with any second do down doing one the count there he goes curveball hit the third head childs up with it and the Orioles are out in the third no runs no hits there was one error one man left at the end of free it is Baltimore one and New York nothing [Music] in this remote part of Canada people depends on the river and by River regularly as clockwork Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce brings banking service to them the MV jean briault is just one of the more than thirteen hundred and fifty commerce branches where you can save it's typical of commerce determination to make saving money easier and more convenient think how handy your own commerce branches here's why because the Commerce has more branches than any other bank on ratings in those days but we know that twenty eight million six hundred thousand homes a record for sports telecast tuned in the fourth game of the World Series last year at Detroit strike one the bud Harrelson who grounded out his first time up right away for Harrelson Jones and clendenon for the mess bounding ball to Robinson they call him the human vacuum sweeper here he just sweeps up everything in fact that left side of the Baltimore infield you've got to really hit a shot to get us keep cash on hand at the commerce one of the world's great banks you know baseball and NBC have ball to Robinson they call him the human vacuum sweeper here he just sweeps up everything in fact that left side of the Baltimore infield you've got to really hit a shot to get it through between Robinson covering the line of third ranging to his left and Belanger was his great range it's short one out nobody on Cleon Jones single he's first we are have struck out four and walked one a ball that young was born in lapto Alabama lives now in Mobile 27 years old one-on-one on deck is clendenon one out nobody on the orioles ahead one to nothing [Music] lab all the left Don Buford puts it away and we have two down since that Buford home run we haven't really had a ball hit hard Don clendenon struck out his first time there's a drive in the left-center for a base hit they're trying to cut it out that goes to the fence when Denon will have extra bases and is in with a stand-up double the Mets have their second yet Kirt fortunately as clendenon came through to get that double that went past a buford in the deep left-center field he got that on the outside corner he managed to pull it pretty well to the left center field with pocket alley and luckily Blair had backed up Buford or else to clendenon might have had a chance to go to third Ron Swoboda struck out his first time each team now has two hits the Orioles are leading one to nothing in the top of the fourth one another emotive when then enough ii do down on deck at Jarl flyball right-center Paul Blair going for as the beat on it and a metro Ithaca go run one hit no errors one left three and a half innings on the Baltimore Oriole one and the New York Mets nothing these are the good times and good times just naturally go together with [Music] good times just naturally go together with [Music] vn attorney tell Ted I'll check him out and fly cassileth winner daddy's gonna check your fly casting out this winter Teddy listen congratulations on the fine year you had in the first your mother's really grown well the happy thing about it as far as I'm concerned is that we did a little better than what people thought and I think that's the way the rest of our club felt - Ted you're gonna get a lot of votes from manage of the year and you deserve it congratulations well thank you I appreciate that let's get back upstairs Boog Powell leads off for the Orioles in the lab to the for the single varieties first time right some club shift on how but the Mets are not ball 1 1 and 1 every manager has his own idea how to play depends on who's pitching and a ball club you have there swung around toward right both of the infield and the outfield point no doing one the on deck batter Brooks Robinson and then we'll go to Le Henri fever a struck out three he hasn't walked anyone pops it up off the fifth it's going to be out of play - and to the John Powell Reardon Key West Florida now lives here in the Baltimore area our youth did he moved I've moved to Miami bill O'Donnell told you balls two strikes perv didn't want to swing at it bud Harrelson charges foul is out faster man might have beaten that without fouls not exactly a speed merchant one down you don't usually see him holed up on a swing like that he usually goes through whether he made a mistake or not Brooks Robinson flied to deep center a first time one out nobody on it pops it up to the right side our wife puts it away and that's out number two and since that leadoff homer to Buford Tom Seaver has been tough for the Orioles Ellie Hendricks popped up his first time do down nobody on and we played as a pull hitter to write name Johnson on deck what a nothing Dave Johnson the change-up is ballsy receiver and Ferguson Jenkins of the Cubs were the only national league pitchers to defeat every opposing club the two old fetch brie and nothing with two out nobody on Seaver was just as tough on the road as he was at home he won 13 he lost four in a road won 12 and lost three at Shea Stadium strike three in one Ellie Henry hate that 500 the third hit for the Orioles their first hit since the first inning Dave Johnson the batter flied to Center his first time Nellie hunter the third-base coach one run three hits for Baltimore no runs two hits for New York the Orioles have two down Hendricks at first the curve is outside one another fastball misses to another here's a white house beyond the ballpark in centerfield that when a right-handed pitcher there it is just beyond a flagpole sometimes comes way over the top it can be distracting for the hitters two balls and no strikes Henrik's up first two down three uh nothing Kurt Kurt this is the Oriole batboy Jay Mazzone who has those artificial limbs and he's used those artificial limbs since he was two years old he was unfortunately in a very bad fire but those artificial limbs had not heard this youngster one bit the strike shows what you can do and you'll want to do it Kurt amazingly enough that youngster we just saw is also a boulder and bowled over 150 again it's really something 3 & 1 the count let's watch here two down Henriksen bolding for the Orioles have runners on first and second and that's the first walk given up by Tom Seaver mark Belanger the batter we're going to pause briefly for station identification this number MVC television the lanyard grounded to third his first time up Henriksen ii Johnson at first two down we were fire the fastball through having a one Brees have changed up now is blowing from third to first not much of a wind rose ones right one on one when denims playing way off the bag at first Johnson had a huge lead there rody was trying to bluffing back one ball one strike the boat is firing to the off the go to third [Applause] laverna guard looked like he had a good play at the plate but if you saw his role as off the skirt here it is in slow motion the pitch was outside Bollinger went with the outside pitch right between the second the first base and whites to clendenon robotics product him home of the throw may have hurried the throw and it was down the third-base foul line and then the thrill from the catcher drilled yonder Charles was also late the Orioles now have Dave Johnson at third Belanger at first give the land your RBI and he was hitting down in that number 8 spot has been so vital for the Orioles all season the pitcher Mike Cuellar is up with struck out he for a signing the Orioles lead now 2 to nothing runners on first and third two down [Music] [Applause] he doesn't want to warm up [Applause] and now here the fella who became the eighth player in World Series history they hit a home run and his first time at bat in the world mickey lowlich was the last to do ball one who homered in the first weeks in an air in the third the language of second play ours at first two away four Orioles in a row of reach base Breda nothing Baltimore [Applause] blowing the third and in the second of different than his a double [Applause] five in a row of reached now for Baltimore law blares up he's the eighth batter of the inning we're going to get some action now the Met bullpen rube Walker the Met pitching coach coming up Seaver was sailing along he had tile on a grounder Robinson popped up and then Hendricks single Johnson watch the Landrieu singled in a run play our single in a run and Buford doubled in a run Ron Taylor warming up or Nothing Baltimore leading they've score three times during the last of the floor runners on second and therapy down six hips offseason for the Orioles curve is hit the turnstiles up with it and that's that um at the end of four innings at Baltimore for and New York nothing [Music] [Music] [Music] what is it [Music] asking the question doesn't make it driving the answer makes it limit makes it once again Tony Kubek Thank You Curt down here with me in the commissioners box Dave and I are on my left his lovely wife Julie Eisenhower David what about this ball game what about the ball if you have a favorite well I definitely got a favor I'm a Baltimore Phantom or any of the American League side I've always been on the American Life League side of things in the World Series I so I think I'm with most of the professionals and not very many of the fans I think Julie you know your husband's probably the greatest baseball fan I've ever seen I had a chance to spend some time with him during the all-star game he knows more about baseball any professional announcer I ever heard he really does and you know the night that the White House had the party for baseball people well one of the members on my dad's staff called David at work and senator dresses office who's getting all in statistics for my daddy in this speech he had bruises David what's the encyclopedia they didn't even need to go to a book well I'm sure your father would like to beer has been a sports fan Aditya really what he was planning to come and then he's happy to see it non meeting so he couldn't make it home Dave thank you so much maybe we'll get back to you later thank you I want to get some inside baseball knowledge for just a few minutes good baby djembe thank you David Thank You Julie let's go back upstairs we're going to the fifth inning here in Baltimore Edie Charles started off with the myths he struck out his first time Mike Cuellar ball one 'we are have allowed two hits single by Cleon Jones and a double by clendenon you struck out four and walked one how to play one ball one strike Don Cardwell are warming up in the Mets bullpen Kurt we saw Tony downstairs interviewing David Eisenhower one night in a ball game Anaheim he came in unannounced with about five minutes as we see Taylor warming up again out in the bullpen set right upstairs unannounced he came in enjoyed the ball game doing one John deck batter is Brody [Music] I'll back you know the Oriole pitching has been something in the World Series they played in the 66th Erie swept the Dodgers four games and pitched three shutouts in a row the last three games at play are has four innings of shutout here so far Curt in that 66 days and the Oriole bullpen was almost as effective as the starters there this season the bullpen has not been called on as much as it was in 66 they do to pitch foul back Edie Charles is quite a poet he's had to put the poetry published nobody on nobody are top of the fifth inning bounding ball to Robinson back him up a hurry up throw right on a button for attention for what well you talk about your great third baseman of all time there's one eye trainer picked on the olivença gene robinson George Cal Billy Cox when he was earlier with the Dodgers I'm sure the people in Brooklyn watching today Curt Vela Cox is the greatest they've ever watched the people here in Baltimore field Brooks is the best live all the right frank robinson down brodie has grounded out his first time but now al Weiss is coming up he walked in his first time chair down to show you the appreciative knit of a Brooks Robinson that way Pat's on the back George Kell every once in a while for teaching him quite a bit about how to play 30 do down Baltimore leading 4 to nothing in the time of the film one ball one strike we're out an hour later tomorrow as Tom Seaver the on-deck batter Bob all that we have one right here in our MVP boo tomorrow the World Series pregame show starts at 1:30 Eastern Daylight Time and as dave mcnally against Jerry Koosman tomorrow the one to pick do and to do our wife Hardwell is still throwing in the Met bullpen due to better ball brain we're pitching 3 & 2 why is this is the Robinson look at that tricky hop and crazy playing a game so far that was a tough popcorn though he stayed right where that occurred it didn't fool them one bit he had the glove down in good position reach the glove down quickly turn the neck made the good heart throw right from the third-base side and right on target the panel to just get the runner by one or two hits fries throw the nuts are down in order and at the end of four and a half innings restore the Baltimore Orioles four and the New York Mets nothing Baron von Spee Dada save a champion of Heidelberg three times spoiled by this play with a miracle plastic coating for the edge of the coin steel doesn't touch your face for many shapes you will never face again under age 15 ha that's real sword do you mean that we're sharing the same cabinet with the man in Jersey that's too deep swings open the door and tells me about his regular right guard now one shot last time all day and you just stood there no I told about our right got antiperspirant and how it stops odor and helps keep us dry two kinds of people two kinds a right guard right we're halfway through the opening World Series game and now to carry the rest of the way on play-by-play the Baltimore Oriole broadcaster and Telecaster mr. Bill O'Donnell Thank You Kurt and hello again everybody Seavers only been really roughed up in one inning that was last inning on the birds batted eight men and here's frank robinson who started off high curve in ball one robinson has batted twice against Seaver and has not hit the ball out of the infield struck you out on the Feres bounced out in the third deep left center field this is AG in front of the warning track with a lot of room AG like the Oriole centerfielder of Paul Blair goes back and comes in on a ball equally well get out puh-pow has had a that came in the first inning with two up and he also rolled out too short as he was jammed on a fastball in the fourth inning and off the check swing foul ball over towards a message example the Orioles are leading Game one of the 1969 World Series by a score of four to nothing Seaver today has a traveling on the breaking stuff as much as his good fastball a really feeding smile a lot of curve that must be the Met report on him and strategy that too many fast balls though they're trying to get fouled off balance he gave him a heat that time but Weiss was perfectly positioned Weiss couldn't have played it any better defensively to get towel on that hotshot one hopper so against Seaver birds have got a free man they both gone down and here is Brooks Robinson Brooks has made the sparkling defensive play of the ballgame has flied deep to Center and his popped up two out in the bottom of the fifth inning he went after the fastball and a new play for Brodie the catcher on deck is the Oriole catcher le Henri again the second baseman twice was perfectly positioned as Brooks lined up on the fastball to the second baseman and so at the end of the fifth inning the score is Baltimore for New York nothing hi I'd like this my personal checking account and this in my savings if everyone who banked at the commerce had the same kind of account did it make life a lot easier for us but it wouldn't do much for you so we've got three kinds of account I like this in my personal checking account and this is my savings for writing checks you need a commerce personal checking account you get a statement every month along with your counsel check my baby's account and this is my saving money you need a common savings account it guarantees you the highest savings account interest available a chartered banks in Canada not just for me please I've been writing a lot for saving money and writing a few checks you need a commerce checking savings account Commerce had three convenient types of accounts most people need to run for checking and run for savings you helped me I'd like to open account if you don't know which combination you need to have Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce one of the world's great banks World Series action with Curt Goudy and Tony Kubik returns after we break for station identification this is the CBC television network well the manager of the Mets Gil Hodges realizing he's four runs down to go to the top of the sixth inning will pull Tom Seaver and he will bat instead one of his catchers Duffy Dyer during the regular season Dyer batted 257 he had three home runs and knocked over 12 right on the first pitch the shortstop Belanger over near the hole for out number one Dyer batting procedure gets one pitch and grounds out short to first a quick out to start at the top of the sixth inning and here's the expression on the feeling right now pictured on the face of the immense manager Gil Hodges there's the leadoff batter now Tommy Agee and he truly has to be one of the fine comeback stories of not only the Mets season but the entire national league season he got the pair of rainbow tins Cuellar thus far on the ball game has thrown that change curve twice and thrown it well one strike to Tommy Agee he didn't get the screwball ball AG came from a 217 average a year ago to a strong 271 this year one and one the screwball missing again the activity right now in the Mets bullpen is with veteran Don Cardwell one away we're in the top of the sixth to change terrible so both his Christ let up rainbow breaking ball but Cuellar looks down at his feet a lot and he does that to concentrate and also tries to relax those rubber arms it is as much as he can [Music] no play on the foul ball with a top sign of the bulk of all fire cup and right field [Music] AG known as a very aggressive swing the fastball and he stays alive at 2 and 2 on deck this is bun Harrelson he got the salt here three times for three looking for [Applause] watch Cuellar now five pitches is using in this game this is that soft curve that he's using as a changeup long stride for him throws them all off that same motion all right Kurt here is a bud Harrelson the shortstop you want to know the Harrelson he's bounced out twice to third baseman Brooks Robinson Harrelson has not been a switch-hitter for too many years back about two or three years ago he got the soft curve over the plate below two balls and no strikes Cuellar has been touch for only two basis bring another heroin and the that's of a third base coach Eddie Yost if lashing Harrelson either the red light or the green light sacred or go ahead and swear to god nobody bowler like although he was waived Affairs face door came up with a right arm and then pointed said go to first base second walk has been issued now by Cuellar he walk twice back in the third inning to lead it off Leone Jones coming on for the third time he has one of the core hits off we are Jones ran the ball right through the middle of the infield pants shortstop Belanger in the first inning for a base hit to Center and he flied to left his last trip in the fourth inning Jones will hit the ball a lot through the middle pal holding Harrelson the runner with two out in the Mets sixth inning didn't get that breaking stuff it might have been a slider right down to his knees Curt has been talking about an assortment and there isn't too much the Cuellar does not have about the only thing he might not have is the straight chain [Music] popped him up Powell might have a can the first base side top of the sixth inning and so at the middle of the sixth inning the score is Baltimore for New York nothing the assembly line beats with a pulse of its own each man is a link in a smooth-running shame that joins all the skills of a dozen tough trades building and shaping again and again they're a bold party breed these men of the line there men and they like what they do with clockwork precision they work as a team and never slow down until their long day is through [Music] and then their reward is in pokey Hale it's older than the rest is O'Keefe as the rtl he's been enjoy okey I'll satisfy his best oaky bail the retail VAR right now well we're going to the bottom of the sixth inning here at Baltimore's Memorial Stadium Baltimore is leading New York by a score of four to nothing and let's go downstairs to Tony Kubek thank you Bill City with me down here male Smith the manager the Detroit Tigers and last year mayor you were in the same boots that Gil Hodges and Earl Weaver brush your ballclub had a little rough break but I think it was really a lot of this Baltimore Hills which really hurts you well you're so right Tony I don't think people gave enough credit to the Baltimore club because they started right from Spring Training and and went right on through the season and when you win a hundred and nine ballgames we thought we play pretty good last year we went 103 so you can see we still be six games behind him if they played that way to plate as well as we did last year male they talked about the great balance of this ballclub the first thing they do they can do everything defense they're good powering they can run s a victory van they can button everything else let's talk a little bit about this Baltimore ballclub and they're hitting especially did you have trouble pitching this ballclub well yes we we did this year of course you take a boy who's start here so far today a little Buford I he he was always in our hair all year long he's a he's a final leadoff man and of course Boog do we we held him home run wise he had to off of us but average wise he got a lot of business off but this park up that's just what it has to do if it has to have a good pitch ballgame it gets it and then not such a good fish game why they score a run so this is did you say I think one of the finest well-balanced ball clubs I've seen in the number of years males go thank you so much I know you're looking forward to next year good luck to you thank you Tony let's go on back upstairs right now this is Elrod Hendricks leading off against the new Mets pitcher reliever Don Cardwell and he opens him up with a wide fastball Cardwell 6-4 220 pounds and this is one lost average on the year he's a 33 year older then with quite a few ball clubs outside again bill Mayo Smith was talking about the Orioles in spring training they had a fantastic record at Spring Training they started winning from the opening game and they haven't stopped since as a matter of fact Darrel Weaver was asked after spring training how you gon do in the regular season and he said just like we did in spring training the first baseman clendenon for the ez put up on Hendrix after he had pulled ahead of the reliever Cardwell two balls and no strikes card well now walking back to the mound in addition to being with the mess with three other national league ball clubs here is Dave Johnson he has flied to Center walked and scored a run and he scored during the three run bottom of the fourth inning where one away in the top of the sixth in the bottom of the sixth inning [Music] their basement Charles with no trouble to retire Johnson easily and that's two up and two down probably a card Wells greatest contribution as we now have mark belanger coming on to that in the bottom of the sixth inning card Wells the greatest contribution was towards the tail end of the season he's primarily a breaking ball pitcher and he was extremely successful in the Mets pennant Drive strike one the Blandford the Lancer has bounced to third got an opposite be a field base hit to right in the fourth inning to drive over one of the three runs and this is play our women [Music] one ball and one strike to Burrell and talked about the AG having a comeback year and Bollinger had to come back here just like a.j he came from Chu OE to 287 this year one after the low fastball and right to a third base coach hunter though Kirk was a great fielding shortstop years ago I remember him and a he's like Belanger he had that range to make that throw in the hole good hands never too good with a bat but he could make spectacular plays in the field see why there's not a base runner on one soon Pop's him up in foul ground clendenon the big salt first baseman and cart well in relief has a 1-2-3 inning to retire the Orioles and so at the end of the sixth inning the score is Baltimore 4 and the New York Mets nothing here it is the hot news for specialty car you've only heard rumors about brand new Dodge Challenger ready to challenge anything on the road in any department power options go all the way up to a 426 Hemi but stance goes wider and the styling just out of sight with hidden wipers dual headlight and inside a whole new world of luxury compare challenges anything you've ever seen the difference is like night and day [Music] everyone is watching you can you be [Music] Challenge 1970 see it at your Dodge dealer [Applause] if all the more pitchers have now allowed no runs in 39 consecutive World Series innings back in the 66 series after the opening game McNally Palmer and bunker pitched consecutive shutouts against the Dodgers and Cuellar has shut out the Mets error in the first six innings of this opening game of the 69 World Series so here we go now to ending number seven and Bill O'Donnell died Thank You Pierre David Ayer to lead off for the Mets in the top of the seventh inning he'll be clendenon their number four batting to be followed by Svoboda and Chara and one of the men Kurt to remember to be remembered in that 66 World Series the great relief job by 4,000 [Music] Revathi pitched better than six innings of relief for McNally in that first game and struck out 11 one open quail the screwball for one ball and one strike on necklaces Ron Swoboda he got a piece of the screwball that time clendenon struck out in the first inning and then he doubled with QA to the power alley in left center in the fourth when Denon likes the fast boys a good fastball swing no chance on a foul ball back to the right side you notice clendenon always busy always active and now ready to type two balls and two strikes Cuellar has been moving the ball around a lot in Clendon and trying to get screwballs to his knees to the outside corner and then trying to jam him with that soft curve tune to got a piece of the screwball a Cuellar because he has the great assortment and also very good control can move the ball around and be effective when Denon right now has not been an easy out up the middle for a base hit line with center denon has a 2 for 3 afternoon when Denon had the last base hit off cuellar areas watched it hit on the ball eyes right on that ball that's good follow-through and he's been the best hitter so far in the game for the net all right the Mets third base hit and they've got something going perhaps to begin the top of the seventh inning here is foot Botev he has fanned and flied to center field a lot of power ball one [Applause] Sloboda as Kurt commented earlier a local product here in Baltimore - Bolzano trial a player has not had control difficulties that through the first six innings he has walked at two men but neither walk has put him in a jam that's plow holding on clendenon nobody three-ball [Applause] Henrik's is going out to talk to Cuellar in addition to Hendrix being a left-hand swinger and that's one of the reasons but only one that he's in the ballgame started against Seaver and now we're batting against Cardwell Oriole manager Earl Weaver also feels that there's no language barrier between Cuellar who comes from Cuba and Hendricks who was born in the Virgin Islands they can talk Spanish to each other or English three undoes the boat away ahead we are trying to fight his way back hello the fans are wondering about clay our durability he completed his last eight starts of the regular season [Applause] [Music] second base so now the Mets have the their biggest rally of the ballgame the Mets are down by four they've come back many times during the season and this will bring on Edie Charles [Applause] three walks have now been driven out by Cuellar Charles has fanned and grounded to third we're in the top of the seventh inning Baltimore leading New York by a score of four to nothing all right now he was again and that's going to bring out the pitching coach here he is George Bamberger there's activity as we've got Bamberger Hendricks and Cuellar meeting this is right-hander Eddie watt the Orioles have the two late inning relief is one a left-hander Richert that was the right-hander water al Bamberger as he goes back to the Oriel at third-base dugout he and Weaver may have just spotted something that the Cuellar is not aware of and we also have activity going on in the New York Mets bullpen with Ron Taylor [Applause] right field Frank Robinson's got to get the long run to the foul line along with James Johnson the runners the runners stay and Frank Robinson made sure before he threw back to Belanger whether clendenon was going to go this is Yogi Berra with his runner at first base Kubota let's remind the fans that during the World Series rule changes the manager can go to the mound as many times as he wants and the rule that the pitcher must throw in 20 seconds is out here too well those are two minor rule changes they're in effect here for the World Series all right Curt two runners still on for the Mets now was one away and here is Jerry grote the runner at second is clendenon and there's the boudic he is not being held by Powell where the infield playing back at double play day [Applause] fastball is high that's but Cuellar problem has been with a control wild huh we are trying to concentrate and think things over [Music] still wild Kuno [Applause] clendenon ii Sloboda furs [Applause] the out feel right now is Fred - pretty good - groovy with the power pockets open have their first run Buford trailing home and then clendenon decides to stay a third turn Yost held him up and the Mets have the bases jammed with in the top of the seventh inning Brody got a good rip at an inside pitch right about hand high and rifted right past the language of the shortstop watchful and you just missed this line drive the Mets trailing by four did not want a gamble Buford had charged that base hit made a good fool because it was a throw to the cutoff man Robinson Robinson should have either let her go through or cut it off and he elected to cut it off when he held from Denham to third well the Mets with a lot of fat on the fire [Music] [Applause] at seconds pagoda Brodie who just got the day stood at first base they in fear playing the same way as a when grill D was better back at normal death with wild one ball one strike WAIS has walked on a 3-2 pitch and send a tricky popping ball did Brooks Robinson at third base away so he threw him out on the fifth this is card well I'm cueball [Music] now the a wildly problem more serious normally when a pitcher is wild hi wild outside you can adjust to it a little bit more quickly now Cuellar has been wild hi low oils lead for nothing in the seventh [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] nets with a big can three balls in peace [Applause] is only one man out the running and that's the impatiens seen in the [Applause] deep left field Buford however is inches come home on the throw which is way off the third-base line wife's got a good rip and lined up to fairly deep left field and Buford throw was wild and way wide of the play so the Mets cut into the Oriole lead and it's now Baltimore four and New York one the other two runners he'll namely Swoboda at second and Brody at first base here's the pinch-hitter now who will bat for card well rod Gasper Gasper coming to the plate with two out with a run home with Brodie at first base and Svoboda at second base Gasper like Harrelson can bat from either side so he will go from the right side against Cuellar on the year he batted 228 overall between the left and right sides for the home run he did much better from the right side shoot an average of cue 63 [Applause] that's its second and first [Applause] while one we are actually has the brought on his own problems with this control situation he just saw Svoboda and bro Rodya Pierce is not being held by pal [Applause] you may have noticed that when Gasper waits for cuellar speech his stance is open just a bit out toward the third-base foul line and then when Cuellar came forward Gaspar went right into the pitch there's the slightly open stance when the ball is thrown that front foot will go right towards the fish [Applause] we are trying to fight it out that meant fire here on the top of the seventh inning gasps bird batting for card whoa xever started the game and went 500 a tough play for Brooks Robinson at third base extremely tough [Applause] this is the hardest way a third baseman has to make charging the ball picking it up barehanded and snapping the throw all in the same motion look at this roll right on target with something on it Robinson made a two best fielding plays of the game so far and in the middle of the seventh inning the score is Baltimore four and New York one one morning Wally Buckley discovered he had a case of the nubs not the nubs the tiny little part of his beard his razor couldn't get all over my face fortunately the Gillette tech medic razor gets rid of the nubs tech Matic adjusts to shave you closer Tech Matic gave Wally the closest shave he ever had no Nick's no cuts no nubs boy that was close Tech Matic major leant against the nubs how yes Valerie we've got to stop meeting like this I know your father will be needing his regular right guard one shot he's good for the whole day you know but I didn't mean anything by it your parents will come barging in for the silver right guard antiperspirant it stops odor and helps keep a strike to us two kinds of people two kinds a right guard Valerie oh your Mona's kid aren't you here Devon said right now let's go downstairs Tony Kubik has someone Thank You Phil with me is Joe Cronin the president of the American League and Joe they're comparing this Baltimore Orioles bulk up to some of the Yankee Cubs back in the 60s they say it's one of the best ball clubs to come along the American League in a long time well I agree with the critics I really think the Baltimore club is playing with the same Yankee confidence they've been together now for two or three years and the Swale of the pitcher add it to their good pitching staff and and balance just come into his own and you know you being a great shortstop knows we realize how much and Robinson the cost is as good as ever and Powell's and proved right along it's a good ballclub I was by particularly like Seaver today Tony I thought he had good stuff and good changeup good motion good curve but those base on balls will get you in trouble while Joe we're going to see some of these Mets pitchers throughout the rest of the series I know you're going to New York but when you see kids when tomorrow another heart stroke Chuck McGraw Nolan Ryan has great stuff so I think you're looking forward really to seeing this Mets ballclub low it won't be a great pitching series I say Joe Cronin thank you so much let's get back upstairs all right thank you Tony and here is the third Mets pitcher now their second early for Don Cardwell went the sixth inning retired three in a row this is another right-hander Ron Taylor and he is a Canadian leg working to Mike Cuellar like money at the inside corner Taylor is the only member of the New York Mets the only player on the match with series experience he was in two ball games for the Cardinals back in the 64 series one ball and one strike Cuellar has one of the oriole of these sets and drove over a run in a fourth inning play our Canada 3 slinger very loose women [Applause] Brown pal and no part today's paid attendance for Game one of the 1969 World Series announced in 48 thousand 400 and there's at least one third of that crowd of 48,000 say our head had a ball and two strikes you try to get that sinking fastball that is on the end two balls and two strikes on deck we don't matter Buford with the batboy Jay Mazzone right now [Music] Tayler born and still is in Toronto Ontario Canada brings you to clean up tailors the best equipment is a taking fastball and you will also shield batters of smile and like good relievers he keeps the ball down or at least prizes he could thing bring in two still alive what was paid attendance for Game one of the 1969 World Series announced at 48 thousand four hundred and there's at least one third of that crowd of 48,000 sailor head had a ball and two strikes you try to get that sinking fastball that is on the two balls and two strikes on deck we'd off batter Buford with that boy Jay Mazzone right next Seiler born and still is in Toronto Ontario Canada bring into the clay tailors the best equipment is a sinking fastball he will also show that as a slider and like good relievers he keeps the ball down everybody tries to people thing free and to still alive the ball was upstairs right back at the point Baltimore leading New York by a score of four to one and we're in the bottom of the seventh inning Cuellar tried to just get that outside pitch was fooled by it he had a lunch port and couldn't get to it so now relievers for the Mets have retired four in a row and the greeting is for the leadoff batter John Buford he has homered he has been safe on an era and doubled over a row Don with his best season in the American lives change curve the ball one that should be a play for a GL ver and right-center field or sloboda it is AG falling off Slobodan and there are two away we commented during the pregame activities that this park actually does not favor the pitcher nor does it favor the hit it it is an extremely tough park in which to pull the ball although it is only 309 peat down both the left and the right field side it does not have the big expansive outfield of like a Dodger Stadium or a Yankee Stadium one ball no strikes to Blair he's been up three times and out three times there's that left field foul line 309 right to that 14-foot wall wanna know human dough now Blair does have a tendency to try to pull quite a few pitches and the medicine showed Blaire a lot of breaking balls curves and sliders sieve it threw him a lot of cure slider gets the outside part two balls in one story on deck is Frank Robinson the Orioles have not had a base hit off net fishing since the fourth inning slider missing three and one two out in the bottom of the seventh Oreos went ahead in the first inning and they've been ahead the Mets had a big rally Lent in the top half of this event he got him on the breaking ball and you may have noticed that Blair just yanked the head away of this he went after that breaking step that was Blair's problem late in the season it was not his problem during the championship series against Minnesota he loses him and that's the Orioles first baserunner since - I'd walk given by Taylor - Blair last year 10,000 people died because they thought they had found a good excuse for not wearing their safety belts in their car 10,000 people who the National Safety Council estimates would have lived if they've taken just six seconds to snap up their safety belt so why don't you buckle up for safety and use that safety belt Frank Robinson has been retired three times by the men we're first to go valve and out of play xever got Frank Robinson on a strike out with a high fastball in the first Frank grounded out to third and his flied to Center Blair's running and they've got him in a rundown Saylor goes to clendenon clendenon and running back to Weiss Weiss running them back and Weiss will make the put out through a tile decide it goes one three four for the foot out and that means Frank Robinson will begin the bottom of the eighth inning and so at the end of the seventh inning the score is Baltimore and New York Canada it's the best piece of real estate in the world and the new high-interest Canada savings bonds let you own a piece of it they're on sale now at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce World Series action with Curt Goudy and Tony Kubek returns after we break for a station identification this is the CBC Television Network the Mets now in the eighth inning start with the head of the order Tommy Agee into his hands for strike one Cuellar has not thrown that just slider too much he's been a screwball fastball and a let-up rainbow curve down the right-field side being chased by Frank Robinson close to the foul pole that's not close enough to mine a fans bill that tomorrow will be on at 1:30 an hour later Eastern Daylight Time World Series report with Jim Simpson Sandy Koufax and Mickey Mantle then Game two of the World Series Jerry Koosman pitching for the Mets and Dave McNally of the Orioles and right after that we'll go to football AFL football we'll tell you more about it later all right Kurt two strikes to AG and he gets them on three pitches six strikeouts for Cuellar twice once looking and now 20 it'll bring on the Mets shortstop bud Harrelson Harrelson has grounded twice to third and he was walked by Cuellar on four pitches in the sixth inning Harrison will spray he'll move the ball around the outfield strike one on the foul ball and right into his hands harrelson not known as somebody who can pull the ball and he's not normally known for power and consequently as we see Jones on deck Blair is playing Harrelson in shallow centerfield one ball one strike that's Hank soar of the american league calling balls and strikes one wine and it's to baldies right Harrelson gave these Mets an outstanding defensive job during the 1969 season 2 & 2 and everybody and understandably so talked about the Mets great pitching but their defense up the middle with Brody back of the plate and Harrelson is short and AG did an outstanding job to to still alive he didn't get the screwball through three balls and two strikes bring to tough play for Belanger and he won't get to it right in the hole between Brooks Robinson and mark Belanger the last inning the Mets had a rally going a run and two hits they picked up now they try to start something a fire with a one-out single by Harrelson right now we pause briefly for station identification this is the NBC television network Harrelson has just produced tip number five off cuellar and you're looking at Cleon Jones who had a base hit up the middle in the first inning since then is flied to left and fouled out Harrelson policed by Powell at first base Orioles lead four to one in the top of the eighth inning daiquan screwball is right to the moon there have been ballgames this year where Cuellar and this is Don clendenon on day there have been games where play are 75% of his pitches have been screwball Valve's happen so Jones is in a two-strike hole the Orioles have activity again in their bullpen Eddie watt as he was throwing in the seventh the throwing again in the a throw a Jones very aggressive with a bat and probably makes the best contact of anybody in the mix Clark Johnson get one Ballinger won't get too Johnson had trouble on a low line drive right between the ankles in the shoe and did not have enough time either for the DoublePlay the Landrieu threw as hard as he could but Jones who has outstanding speed down the line beat bill Andrews fire to power two out Jones is now the runner let's see how they work to clendenon now he's doubled and single he's been a toughest man for Cuellar today and they are might change his strategy a bit against me he went a low to him ball one when Denon has put the ball in two parts of the field a power alley double and a base hit up the middle fouled away on no fly by clendenon I would imagine Kurt that not so much in mid-june when clendenon came to the Mets for Montreal but towards a late part of August that clendenon tailed he had a new lease on his baseball out there riding the crest for the amazing Mets and we can see why I would still up there one ball and two strikes Boyer has worked low over the plate and has also jammed to clendenon here in the top of the 8th inning Cuellar led the Orioles and wins and innings pitched in complete volume and in right down no good with the screwball 2 & 2 pal holding Jones with his way trike out to an aim-7 for Cuellar one hit and a man left and so in the middle of the eighth-inning is Baltimore for New York one these are the good times and good times just naturally go together with [Music] [Music] good time just naturally go together with [Music] old Vienna Phil O'Donnell along with Kurt Goudy at Baltimore's Memorial Stadium and in World Series history the club that has won the first game of a World Series has then gone on to win 39 of them and however clubs which have won the first game of the World Series have been beaten back in loss 26 in previous fall classes you'll see the rest of the world for MVP AFL football highlights during the fall I remember NBC brings you the Rose Bowl the Orange Bowl the Gator Bowl and the Senior Bowl all on NBC best for the ball game all right Thank You Curtin here's the bottom now of the eighth inning Frank Robinson was batting in the seventh with Blair at first base and two out and then blowww with Blair running Saylor just broke contact with a rudder and caught him in a rundown so Robinson in the bottom of the 8th did not get the slider did not check the swinging time Frank went from 268 a year ago to 308 this year tried the slider again one ball and one strike he's deadly serious about becoming a manager is evil and Curtis you know for the second straight day winner Frank is going to manage in the Puerto Rican League at Santurce smart baseball man he should be a good manager he's made y'all made statements and hasn't kid in anybody he says he wants to be a major league manager he does not want to manage in the minors he wants to start in the big time all Frank has seen now is breaking pitches from Ron Taylor two balls and two strikes and Kurt Frank will take a quite a few of these Baltimore ball clubs to that San Souci Club again this winter two balls and two strikes the camera Pal is on day for those of you National League fans who remember Frank Robinson when he played with the Reds and have not seen him since he's been in the American League since 66 like a Henry Aaron for example he's got extremely quick hands and strong wrists he went after the change-up but pulls it way foul there are many people Kurt Goudy who feel that Frank Robinson has been as much of a help for this ballclub has a leader off the field as he's been with a baton a--they that's what we understand especially when we talked to the other Oriole players bringing two now and he got that slider upstairs a bit but had that swing out in front two strikeouts for Taylor interleaf he's faced four men he's walked one Boog Powell has one of the auricle base hit that was the line single to right in the first since then he's been handled twice on infield ground ball now produced 22 home runs a year ago but rocketed 37 out this year Taylor just challenged Powell completely challenged him in outfits rooks Robinson waiting the Batman we're in the bottom of the eighth inning and the Oreos lead the mess four to one got the outside corner I kind of think that the tailor had good pal maybe guessing something different two strikes to pal see a tailor now decides to waste one he didn't waste it when Denon was perfectly positioned playing close to the foul line and has Powell for an easy foot out clendenon when Powell swung was only one good right off that foul line pal back to the dugout in the greeting Brooks was one of the hitting heroes in the American League Championship Series he had seven hits against Minnesota pitching the Mets swept the Braves and the Orioles did the same thing they swept the twins two away ball one dirt the Mets fans looking ahead to the Mets last chance in the ninth it's going to be Swoboda Charles and Brodie and we'll probably have a right and left hander going to work in the Baltimore bullpen 102 Brooks Robinson got the outside edge to the knees one ball in one strike this is Elrod Hendricks on deck the Oriole catcher one and one now he chased an outside slider Brooks lunging and went after a bad pitch one ball two strikes Taylor kept him off-balance you away the bases are empty two balls and two strikes Brooks feels that his success against the twin in that championship series with because he had complete concentration as for one thing talked about great two strikeouts in the inning for Taylor he's got three strikeouts in two innings of outstanding relief Ron Taylor and so at the end of the eighth inning the score is Baltimore four and New York one [Music] your next car should have this much class and this much quieter chrysler 4 1970 Chrysler with torsion quiet ride smooth silent luxurious and with new wide stance Chrysler Canada's best-selling luxury car [Music] before they met that in the top of the ninth-inning downstairs to our good friend Tony Kubik thank you Bill O'Donnell I'm talking down here to a well your dad's a good friend of mine Bobby's shy like what is your dad do which team are you rooting for Bobby father did your dad gonna let you play hooky from school Monday Tuesday and Wednesday or Thursday up in New York I don't think no you think he's gonna make you go school yeah well I thought he was a nice guy but I'm not so sure you don't like to see that ball game who are you pulling for you got a favorite player on that Club you made a good played in the oval go yeah Bobby thank you so much right now let's go back up the bill of Kirk thank you Tony and here are the Mets now in Canada do-or-die at top of the ninth-inning with Ron Swoboda they're right fielder too low for a ball Slobodan a Baltimore born and bred product and educated here went to Patterson Park High School one ball one strike at that breaking pitch into his letters on the inside corner Charles is on deck in charge he got heat and didn't get his one ball in please done well I think that's the fastest pitch he's thrown in the game and we mentioned earlier about Cuellar sometimes throws 75% screwballs there are ballgames he uses the baseball even more than a dosa screwball Cuellar likes to figure that whatever his pattern is successfully in the first few innings of the ballgame he likes to stay with right now he's 2 2 2 Svoboda [Music] Cuellar is going to have to hurry you throw and won't make a throw they are probably realize that he wasn't handling the ball properly also realized he might have had a tight play on Swoboda though in his haste to get to the ball and throw he lost it completely bye-bye so the next would light filter at the top of the ninth inning the Orioles believe the netscore21 and now the Baltimore bullpen springs into action Richert a left-hander and want a right-hander are starting to warm up and Charles now the batter Reich one Kubota has been given a basic the left-hander to the right of the screen is Richert the right-hander is what towel is not holding with Blair hazard and rain in dead center field one gun in the top of the ninth we'd like to thank two fine gentlemen who have old Curt Goudy and yours early villo Donnell in Game one of the World Series are a very able statistician Alan Roth and also our stage manager they very likeable Jim O'Gorman thank you gentlemen Jerry grody now the Mets catcher Brody has one of the base hits off cuellar four runs six hits for Baltimore are run six hits for New York inside corner for a bonus drive Brody who not only has one of the strongest arms in the National League of on their catchers but in both legs kind of a defensive swing on that screwball and he got a piece of it Brody with a late swing realized the pitch had the corner and had the late defensive cut one to the boat it not helped a laying back Keith ha eight right now [Applause] we are since the all-star game has won 13 ballgames and and a reminder that immediately following our ball game stay tuned for World Series report and World Series Game two followed by AFL football that's tomorrow air time remember now tomorrow is at 1:30 this is art shamsky now being brought up by our shamsky's on deck this is Weiss in the batter's box and shamsky is on day two balls no strikes to Weiss Hendricks and Cuellar had quite a few discussions like this during the mitts rally in the seventh inning we are facing the net batter who has driven over the Mets only wrong Rory balls no strikes the wild four pitches and the mess with two out have two on that with the tying or under the plate [Applause] for walks now have been given up by Cuellar and the pitching coach of the Orioles George Bamberger who visited the mound during the seventh inning coming out again the Orioles are continuing to continuing the war Richert the left-hander and wot the right-hander let's watch to the left and Rickard to the water to the right bamberger's still with Cuellar this is when they want that honest answer are you tired we also check with a catcher they're satisfied I guess the way ours already for art shamsky who is the hottest hitter for the Mets during their playoff series with Atlanta but Gil Hodges who's utilized his platoon system very successfully took his left handers out but he's right-handed hitting lining her under the plate for walks now have been given up by Cuellar and the pitching coach of the Orioles George Bamberger who visited the mound during the seventh inning coming out again the Orioles are continuing a continuing to warm Richert the left-hander and watt the right-hander let's watch to the left and Rickard to the water to the right Bamberger still with Cuellar this is when they want that honest answer are you tired we also check when a catcher satisfied I guess they ours already for art shamsky who was the hottest hitter for the Mets during their playoff series with Atlanta but Gil Hodges who's utilized his foot to system very successfully took his left handers output he's right-handed hitting lineup in the champ see was red-hot against Atlanta he was indeed dirty and just seven base hits 13 times to the plate so that's better than 500 - on for the men and two out on the top of the knife pulled by the breaking ball without God shamsky likes to pull and as a matter of fact in the Oriole outfield Blair extremely shaded to right-center second baseman Johnson goes to first [Applause] Baltimore has been victorious by a score of four to one play our Hennessy a baking knife that pulled out of Bo yeah we'll have an interview along with Tony Kubek and a recap of the first game final score the Orioles four runs six hits and no errors the Mets one run six hits and one error one happy once have a good job then shape with Gillette spoiler with miracle plastic coin so edge of cold steel not touch face or mini shape oh no now with me Mike Cuellar Mike congratulations nailed a pretty fine ballgame thank you very much Tony what was the best pitch for you today I got it at school boy the best one today you know I feel pretty good by unit for the first ball but after that I got to put a good screwball but what about this Mets lineup now what is your impression of the Mets lineup what about AG what about Swoboda what about some of the other hitters well no they're all a mess you know from the apartment through the six so the six hitter you gotta be careful with us you know he can hit a ball out of the park any time you know you can make a no mistake you got to put a good book club Mike there's some managers that are saying in baseball people saying that they oughta bat left-handed hitters against you to take away that screwball does it bother you whether it's a left-hand hitter or right-hand hitter up there well they ain't nobody means you know because I tried to figure this thing on it though let's find it through and I use in the screwball so left under too you know then nobody at me really nobody Mike let's go back to just before the ballgame what kind of feelings did you have you've never seen the Met ballclub before where you're nervous were you on edge you didn't have time to warm up I know for a while because the vice president's the president's wife Pat Nixon came in in the party and they kind of delayed your warmest did this affect you at all let's start the ball game when they affect me a little vertical turn though women are like you're saying I know why me not good I think about fine minute oh you know because those other people so in my own but anyway you know that I don't feel nice do you don't never you know they don't have it first night there's nothing on Mike you had a fine ballgame and it must be quite comforting you must feel pretty good out there when you're on the mound when you can look behind you and see Brooks Robinson a third both hands are at Short and some of the other players in the inner of Davey Johnson the cars Boog Powell Brooks made a heck of a play down on third base oh yeah I mean that's the best ever break that's on my life you don't like that guy you can really do everything gets to the line up to the hole heavy since my bunions you know and they do some bull power to it is know you know everybody think Mike Weir thank you so much you know that's quite a start first time at bat in the World Series did a home run three four four day quite a day congratulation thank you very much Tony what about Tom Seaver what about batting often that you've never seen him before well nobody went to the same university I did University of Southern California and I saw him one winner I think I just hit against a once but I knew he threw hard and I had to look for the hard stuff all day no matter what he's you and all the report city that we had is he threw hard and I felt that if he threw hard I saw like I look for what about tomorrow and Jerry Koosman the left hand have you ever seen him before I know I haven't Tony and I really I understand he drove curveballs and fast balls just like Seaver and I just hope we get off to another good start Don do your impressions of the Mets ballclub of course it's a team comprised of young players inexperienced they just don't give up we've seen them in the playoffs against Atlanta what about your impressions of this Mets ballclub well Tony I don't think they're the type of club that gives up the only thing is I think we got off to a good start and in support of two or three runs right there together and I think they may have had a little letdown but you can't say they're gonna let down tomorrow if they get off to a pretty good start they're gonna be a tough ballclub bound Buford congratulations once again have a good series have a good day tomorrow thank you let's go on back upstairs we'll be back with more about the 1969 World Series and a look at tomorrow's game deal town where the bones of Canada's growth they're born torn from a furnace as hot as the Sun sponge from Canada's Rock and fuel and the skill of the men of steel town [Music] they're party men who like their life they're proud of the work they do and they earn the satisfaction of seeing a tough job through and when they relax they relaxed with an ale that bolder than the rest yes O'Keefe is the rtl these men enjoy oaky fails satisfies best [Music] okey Vale the radio for right now [Music] here's the way the scoring went and the first heading Buford led off the game for the Orioles with a home run to right the Orioles had their beginning in the fourth with two out nobody on Hendricks singled johnson walked Melander single driving in hendrix 'we are the pitcher single knocking in Johnson and then Buford double to the right-field corner and going Belanger that was the end of the scoring for the Orioles the myths had a big threat in the seventh clendenon singles will vote a walk after Charles flied out wrote single clendenon was held up at third the bases loaded Weiss flied to left on a sacrifice fly scoring clendenon and then they play in the ballgame Gasper was a pensioner a little roller down the third round and had not handled that roller the Mets would have had the bases loaded and Agee a good hitter coming up the Robinson made a sparkling play charging that slow hit ball and he had six assists by the way in the game the World Series record for a third baseman is nine now tomorrow Bill O'Donnell we have Dave McNally and Jerry Koosman two left-handers going how do you size those two out well Kurt I think the Koosman probably has the better fastball I think good from what I've seen of McNally McNally probably has a better curve ball McNally in the last two years has also picked up a pretty good slider like we had today we have two outstanding starters Koosman once receiver and McNally had his second straight to the 20 victory year he won 20 ballgames in 22 and I'm sure you remember he won his first 15 ballgames this year before the twins Peter rather a team game outside of the play by Brooks Robinson third there weren't many other exciting plays in the game Baltimore was in command so Cuellar is a winner zebras eluded Buford with a home run on the double and two RBIs with the banning star of the game and Brooks Robinson the feeling star tomorrow though is another day and we'll be on the air with Game two at 1:30 Eastern Daylight Time Curt Gowdy and Bill O'Donnell hoping you enjoyed the opening game of the 1969 World Series this game is
