hello again everybody I'm Al Michaels we come down to the end of the regular season it's quite simple when this series began on Friday night the Astros had a three game lead the Dodgers needing a sweep in the series to force a divisional playoff if they win today they will do just that and there will be one game tomorrow to determine the National League's Western Division champion if the Dodgers do indeed win today we will bring you tomorrow's game beginning at four o'clock Eastern 1 o'clock Pacific time of course if Houston wins today they will wrap it up they will go on to meet the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League playoffs you will see game 1 from Philadelphia either LA or Houston at Philadelphia from the vet on Tuesday at 8 o'clock Eastern Time and then on Wednesday we'll begin our coverage of the American League Championship Series as the New York Yankees take on the Kansas City Royals at Royals Stadium in Kansas City the pitching matchup today for the Dodgers it will be Burt Hooton and for Houston perhaps their most effective picture over the past six weeks right-hander Verne rule with me is Bob Uecker and you when you look at the pitching matchup today it's interesting there's some question about burn rule how far he can go well now a couple of nights ago on Friday to be exact burn rule was reaching for a towel on the bench and somehow ripped his index finger on attack now he's had two sutures taken two stitches taken in the index finger on his pitching hand and I just don't know how he can work today al I've never seen a pitcher work with a blister a cut on the pitching fingers they've talked about him wearing a band-aid today I've never seen a manager on an opposing team let somebody put a foreign object on a pitching finger a bandage a band-aid whatever I just can't imagine a guy like Burt Hooton pitching with sutures in his fingers you said he's had a great year for used to these 112 lost for three complete games now and we had one of them a couple of weeks ago against San Francisco against Burt Hooten today 14 and 8 here's another guy that said arm problems this year at times for Los Angeles the Dodgers as you said al must win so that's the matchup today we've had high drama here both on Friday night and yesterday afternoon in the first two games of this series in just a moment we'll be back the eastern Astros coming in on Friday night needing just one win to wrap up the National League West but they have really been through the ringer Friday the Dodgers winning on Joe Ferguson's 10th inning home run yesterday a home run by Steve Garvey the difference la has won the first two let's go back and review the highlights Game one in this series Friday night jam-packed Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles no score second inning the Houston pitcher ken Forsch at the plate Alan Ashby at second base in that doubled force lines a Don Sutton breaking ball into centerfield for a base hit Ashby rounds third comes in to score the Astros draw first blood and lead one to nothing go to the bottom of the fourth now two out Rick Monday who had doubled at second base Porsche on the mound for the Astros it's a breaking ball does Garvey into the corner in left where Jose Cruz cuts it off but rounds third comes in to score dodgers time' game 1-1 it stayed that way then two out bottom of the seventh inning Pedro Guerrero the Dodgers centerfielder drives wants a deep left field watch Jose Cruz back to the 370 sign setting himself leaping and taking the home run away from Pedro Guerrero that kept the score tied we watch again as Cruz leaps above the wall to take the home run away from Guerrero eighth inning now runners at first and third for Houston one out Alan Ashby flyball left-field Dusty Baker gets set to make the catch and throw a Cedeno tags at third here comes the throw and Cedeno is there ahead of it to put Houston on top 2 to 1 but the Dodgers then battled back runner at first base Rudy law one out ninth-inning here's the key play of the game Porsche on the mouth for the Astros Baker hits a slow passing ball to the right side rafi olanta store with more crossing in front of him drops the ball juggles it has no play the Dodgers with runners at first and second Steve Garvey at the next picture on the line to see Daniel for the second out the Dodgers one out away from losing it but then on a 1-1 pitch Ron Cey bouncing this one past Craig Reynolds out into centerfield law the paint runners scoring from third tied the game 2-2 la stayed in it in the 9th and the 10th because of that man Fernando Valenzuela a 19 year old out of Sonora Mexico who did the job that strike out into the top of the 10th inning and then as the Dodgers came up in the bottom of the 10th inning Joe Ferguson leading off for LA Kent for still on the mound Fergie drives into deep left centerfield c-czar's to Daniel all the way back leaps and can't get it the Dodgers able to stay alive pulled it within two games on the home run by Ferguson the former Astro the Dodgers won it by a score of 3 to 2 as Ferguson said later he was flying as he rounded 2nd base same situation yesterday the Dodgers needing a win to stay alive in the National League Western Division bottom of the second inning the Dodgers with 2 on and 2 out Nolan Ryan the million dollar a year free agent on the mound for Houston Darryl Thomas at the plate Thomas hitting it into left field in front of Jose Cruz for a base hit Garvey rounding third comes in to score the Dodgers take a one to nothing lead go to the top of the fourth inning now Jose Cruz at third base for Houston two out right now at the plate Jerry royce pitching for la flyball to centerfield Pedro Guerrero misjudges it can't find it drops it in front for a base hit Cruz crossing the plate to tie the game 1-1 Steve Garvey coming up for the Dodgers now bottom of the fourth inning nobody out nolan ryan delivers and Garvey hits that bash ball over the wall in left field to give the Dodgers a two to one lead Garvey with three hits yesterday has 199 on the season the Dodgers protecting a two-to-one advantage as they went to the top of the fifth inning and Houston threatened they had runners at first and second one out the key defensive play of the game for LA coming up here with Joe Morgan at the plate royce delivers Morgan it's a line drive speared by the leaping Davey Lopes at second who flips to Thomas for the double play to get the Dodgers out of the inning it stayed 2-1 as we go now to the ninth inning two out the Astros with runners at first and third Gary woods bouncing ball on the right side the rookie Jack Brittani finds stop over to Garvey to end it and the Dodgers have a victory Jerry Roy's pitching him to a 2-1 win over Houston they take in the first two games in the series [Music] that was Friday that was Saturday now we'll find out about Sunday the Dodgers needing a win to force a divisional playoff tomorrow Houston and Los Angeles coming up from Dodger Stadium smoggy and hazy much like yesterday the temperature however not oppressive were blessed with the day in the mid-70s the capacity crowd rising at Dodger Stadium and su rainy approaching the mic in centerfield to sing our National Anthem [Music] Oh [Music] what's so [Music] whose broad stripes [Music] or the run [Music] were Sookie [Music] gay [Music] all the left [Music] over the years the crowd here would have to be described as relatively pleasant but certainly not the last two nights and then listen now as they build the crescendo building the Tigers are ready to take the field it looked like an impossible task for Los Angeles they needed to win for their by the way is Sandy Koufax who works now when some of the Dodger pitchers you saw sandy moving down the runway Dusty Baker is their Navy Lopes his hurt but he's there and in the lineup today a bit of a patchwork lineup for Los Angeles remember and thinking back Reggie Smith is on the disabled list he's been out for two months now shoulder surgery they're playing without Phil Russell they're playing with Ron Cey who has a hamstring pull Dusty Baker as a hamstring pull Davey Lopes has a pinched nerve in his neck and he's had back problems this season penis time on the disabled list so with paceman glue Lasorda has held this club together and now they try to continue on they needed a four-game sweep coming in but right now all they need is to winning Friday winning Saturday the crowd waiting for the diners to take the field Joe Ferguson will do the catching today along with Steve Garvey in your picture there on the left [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] the Dodgers taking the field our defensive cutting around with Steve Garvey at first base for LA [Applause] Davey Lopes at second despite the bruised neck Bill Mueller has created a brace for him the dodger trainer there's Darrell Thomas who's been a man on the spot in relief of the injured Bill Russell who's been gone now for three weeks and Ron Cey at the big hit on Friday in the ninth inning with two out is at third in the Dodger outfield Dusty Baker battling a hamstring injury he's in left the man in center had a lot of problems yesterday with the smog and the haze Dave drove guerreiro he spent time on the disabled list in August and early September and around and right for LA is rick monday who had three hits on friday so another veteran who has responded down the stretch ferguson was the big hero of course on friday night with the home run of the 10th inning that by the way is his only hit against houston the season and bird Putin bottomed out for LA it's been a bit of an up and down year for Hooton Bob Uecker touching on it during the open some arm trouble from time to time issue nothing really serious he's made all of his scheduled starts and we'll see about today Houston with Poole Cobell and Morgan hitting third Cruz in the cleanup spot and Cedeno batting fifth art Howe at first Alan Ashby will do the catching they have Kraig Reynolds batting eighth the shortstop and on the mound Byrne rule and I think we might point out al at the top of the telecast that both of these guys are working with three days rest matter of fact Burt Hooten making his third start this year with three days rest on May 14th he started against Chicago at Los Angeles lost 5-2 to give up four runs in six innings then on July 29 at end to complete game win and as I said burn rule also working with three days rescue know how the Dodgers a normal day today they took their regular batting practice Houston did not take batting practice today they occupied the clubhouse until about twenty minutes before the start of the game when they took a little bit of infield toss the ball around but the Dodge is a very very loose Club and the Astros came with their bags packed hoping to get a charter to Philadelphia after the game we'll see here we go Hooton against Terry Puhl leading off batting 280 to one and oh the cat the Astros it's well known if you follow baseball did not have very much power they do not hit very many home runs Poole has the only home run in Dodger Stadium this season by an astro - another County hit that in the first meeting here early in the year and they've hit none in the subsequent seven meetings Goodin with a 2o delivery missing outside three and oh the cow that's the one thing with this Houston club a land difference to Los Angeles the Dodgers with those two victories in the first two games both coming via the home run as you look at Bill Burton Ferguson and then Garvey very seldom you see his master is good again in that style Terry Puhl has drawn a walk so the Astros with the leadoff man on the Astros scratching and clawing for runs great team speed pool with 23 steals as eNOS Cobell gets ready to stand in gebel batting 276 with two home runs and 55 runs batted in 3 for 8 in the games Friday and Saturday so Poole held on by Garvey away to his lead first-inning nobody out Poole goes the pitch is a strike and it looked like Ferguson had called for a pitcher Joe was stepping out and Hooton misread to sign and threw a strike but Poole has the steal exactly right al Ferguson took that step outside to take the pitch out then had a reach back in on the outside quarter to stake to take a strike from Hooton and I believe that's what caused Ferguson the bottle of all but al I was going to point out the Astros have got to make things happen you pointed out they play that type of baseball they got a hit-and-run steal they can't lay back the pitching is really held up in both ballgames but they just haven't scored an indication there that they think one run is very important early as Cobell tries to bunt Poole over and now the count is Owen too so Verdun concerned about getting the Maine over to third when really all Cobell has to do anyways you set a ground ball to the right side swinging away now the last couple of times that we have seen Houston we've had them two out of the last three weeks Joel Morgan was in the leadoff spot he's been dropped to number three and as he said Cobell trying to get that runner to third the Astros looking for one here in the first inning here's the O 2 pitch to Cobell got him swinging rein it up and in on it on the pitch that may have been out of the strike zone so Deena strikes out good fastball now you're right up and tight on Cobell and Hooton gets his first today one down and here is Joe Morgan Morgan with a gimpy knee so he has come out of the lineup during the course of the games Friday and yesterday Morgan batting 246 somewhat misleading in terms of what he has meant to the Astros in 1980 Joe one of those fellas it's very difficult to measure the influence the impact he has because of the type of fella he is and what he can mean off the field and the facts of things he does that don't necessarily show up in the statistics especially in terms of your batting average I think yesterday a good indication al as to the feelings of Joe morg and some of the riders here in the Houston clubhouse yesterday asking some of the players about the momentum shifting toward Los Angeles and some of them got upset Morgan was the guy that settled things down he said I don't know what momentum means he said I'd rather be in our spot we got the game lead it's interesting a lot of the quotes in a situation like this are very predictable year after year when teams go down to the end the Astros though in one man's opinion anyway have looked very tight Friday and Saturday especially at the plate one and all they count on Morgan I would have to think that they're going up there a little tentatively just in watching the games Friday and yesterday yeah I gotta agree with Yale and plus the big crowds here at Dodger Stadium no matter what the Dodgers have done in the series they have screamed and hollered and it's nice to be at home to finish up the season the Dodgers trailing by three when they started 1o pitch in there for a strike every pitch that's thrown a holler goes up from the crowd the Dodgers took the field to a tremendous ovation it was quite a scene here on Friday night the Dodgers were there backs up against the wall in the ninth inning and the crowd chanting and cheering in the Dodgers respond with a run to tie that's a strike good off-speed fish cook and of course shows that knuckle curve that drops straight off potato very tough pitch to handle now it really is when he's got it going right it falls off a table the one thing that Hooton lacks and we talked about this earlier velocity contender at times on and off during the season doesn't have that real good velocity that he's had in years past we still got the good good knuckle curve really good the check of the runner and the one to delivery swinging so Joe Morgan strikes out sooo down in the first inning with pool still at second and up comes Cruz may be a little premature with the talked about this lacking velocity on the fastball because he got up in Ted Cobell with a fastball for a strike out and rolled one past Morgan for his second you wonder if they don't go up there perhaps looking for the knuckle curve if they look for anyone pitch from who tore something down you can see Thomas moved over toward the middle to keep Poole close to second with Cruz at the plate one one account josè having another fine year an unheralded player a man who is always up at or near or over 300 this year he's batting 305 however just one for nine as you can see in the first two games he leads the team and runs batted in with 90 and he's led the Astros in each of the three previous seasons in that department one in one thrown as you can see in that graphic to some first ending problems Poole that second to damn first inning no score the Dodgers needing a win to force a divisional playoff tomorrow the 1-1 to Cruz is not foul the plate umpire today is Doug Harvey Andy Olson at first nicolosi at second jury Crawford at third Harvey has a great reputation I think if you were to take a poll I bet you nickel it most of the players in the league would tell you if they could pick yours when I've played I always like Harvey working behind the plate he's awful consistent one ball two strikes account and the pitch is up and away 2 and 2 on cruise there he is Doug Barbie veteran umpire making his home in San Diego he's been through this before he's fired a lot of playoff games World Series games and back of the plate today [Applause] no race yet to be decided it's New York and KC and the American League in Philadelphia International - to delivery hit in the air to right-center field but over his Rick Monday and he but they strand fool ii know [Applause] coming up two people on the bound for the Houston Astros as we go to the bottom of the first it's the way the Dodgers lineup today Lopes leading off and Monday Baker garbey hitting fourth followed by say Guerrero Ferguson in the seven spot Darryl Thomas and the pitcher Bert Boote the Astros out on the field [Music] rule on the mound with a record of 12 and 4 he has been over the past six weeks perhaps their most consistent picture he is a good man to have on the mound today but the big question as we discussed earlier the condition of the winger [Applause] and then back at him right there how Morgan Reynolds and cobalt on the infield left two Ryan of Cruze Sedan Yuen pool with Ashby back of the plate and burn rule having his best season by far in the bay really going to be interesting al the watch rule work he does not have a bandaid on the fingers he said he's got the sutures two stitches taken I just can't imagine a guy trying to throw a baseball he uses a crossing style at times for a sinking type fastball and breaking stuff naturally would have a tendency to rip something like that I know how bad it is for the with a blister there's the index finger on the pitching hand of Burt Hooton two stitches taken correction on burn rule and I just really again I hate to repeat myself but I can't imagine a guy trying to throw a breaking ball and and spin that baseball with a finger like that when rule went down to warm up and all of a sudden maybe done right now as you can see that rule is taking some went to his mouth he has to step off the they had joaquin andujar down in the bullpen with him his rule was warming up and actually it's not rules problem here let's make Pelosi help Joe Morgan adjusted something I was going to say the first pitch that he threw the Lopes was a breaking ball and no if it had anything to do with the finger yet or not but as you said it's Joe Morgan with the sunglasses we mentioned Andujar now he would be the man you would think would come in if rule has to come out early we'll see naturally when you get down to this point in the season your starters become relievers when you've got one game to win and that's the case in particular with the Dodgers of course and to in a certain extent used to do with obviously like to wrap it up today you can see almost anybody come in from the bullpen [Applause] here's the 100 fix to Davy Lopes hit in the air in a center field Cesar Cedeno shielding his eyes with the glasses down and makes the catch one out if you saw yesterday's game you knew that every fly ball the center was an adventure here at Dodger Stadium with a smoke in the haze and the smog and a lot of 5:00 this morning in the light-colored church back of the plate if the I feel here were a runway they'd close it it's tough rick monday was saying during batting practice ala fan a Dodger fan who has been here for about seven or eight years on the bleachers in right field told a couple of the players after the game yesterday was the first game he had been to where he hadn't seen a fly ball on the outfield in seven years believe it Rick Monday at the plate a strike on the outside part to the chagrin of brick that we told you Harvey was good rule think so what ad bases empty were the bottom of the first inning with no score one at one burn rule is an interesting case came up with Detroit initially released by the Tigers in March of 78 he was signed by Houston for their farm system then last season he had back surgery [Applause] came back in September he's at a pioneer and AD curve in there good that's quickly his style al he's been a good sinking fastball he's not overpowering he works the corners good breaking ball good changeup [Applause] so no problem for the first two hitters with the damaged finger - down in the first inning and here comes Dusty Baker with a slight hamstring fall Baker after getting aboard on Friday night he hit the ball at Rafael and destroyed juggles for the earth he play in that game dusty had to come out for a pinch runner so he's playing taped up today having a great season want to know one in one account on dusty with Garvey on deck again if the Dodgers win today one game for the National League West title tomorrow you will see it on ABC for Eastern 3 central 1 Pacific time playoff coverage beginning on Tuesday night in Philadelphia then on Wednesday afternoon game 1 in the American League Championship Series from Kansas City sure since the Dodgers down in the first and at the end of one in game 162 and Dodger Stadium Houston nothing Los Angeles nothing committing at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles Al Michaels along with Bob Uecker the Dodger is trying to stay alive Houston trying to win it and get on a charter to Philadelphia Cesar Cedeno to lead things off for the Astros so Daniel how and Ashby say czar with great success as you can see against Bert Hooton this season Cedeno hitting 308 he is tied for fifth in the league by the way Billy Buckner of the Cubs was three for five yesterday and goes in today with a five point lead over Keith Hernandez in the battle for the batting championship Cedeno fouls it away Tommy Lasorda loose as always before the game not so loose right now [Applause] oh and one [Applause] today Nia tries to bunt his way on that's a beauty bare hands all of a 2-lane and stays ours boy Cedeno with a bunch single taking advantage of shaved banked up at third there you see say a couple of steps behind the bag now Cedeno dropping the bunt and say as al said earlier bothered by a hamstring there's the barehanded pickup he makes a nice play just can't get anything on the throw and Cedeno is going to be sick that's what Houston's got to do al and that's what I was talking about earlier got to make things happen they're not going to do it with the long ball Cedeno leads the Astros in steals he has 46 he's been caught 15 times the astros was five men with over 20 five minutes starting lineup and also Landis going 23 would be the sixth man on the roster starting lineup today so they know at first bases are taking some extra time good and ready now to work on how over the first base to maybe the time with great there he goes the pitch is high for the second Cesar Cedeno going on the first pitch and stealing his 47th face and that's two steals off Ferguson today of the Dodger catchers Ferguson would probably have the weakest arm Steve Yeager is the guy with the best throwing arm allergy look at Cedeno going the second that throw taken by Darryl Thomas he beat it easily from another angle you take a look a look at the jump again by Cedeno digging for second another thing with Ferguson al he takes a long time getting rid of the baseball buta now with a 100 fix - how wanted one the doctors going with Ferguson they have two other catches Yeager you mentioning Steve and also the rookie who has done a decent job for them this season Mike Scioscia with the chips down they go to Fergie Cedeno at second and nobody out similar situation as we had in the first inning and a fun and a good on that alabaster winner and he's safe at first so art now is on there was no question that that would have gotten Cedeno 2/3 and then Hooton compounds the problem by dropping it so how is the board and the Astros have runners at 1st and 3rd and it scored as an error and a sacrifice for how sacrifice and an air here it is again how with a beautiful bunt and Burt Hooten trying to make the barehanded pickup if he makes the play clean he's got a shot at how at first base there's the bobble no chance to on runners at first and third [Applause] now Alan Ashby the astros switch-hitting catcher 2:53 collectively he's batting 274 against right-handed pitching and field double definiteiy in the left-center field for a base hit so Daniel will come in to score how will test Guerrero's arm and the throw is off mine the throw goes back to the [Applause] he was able to get in under Garvey's tag so Houston leaves one nothing and still nobody out [Applause] Ashby when his 48th RBI and is most important on a big base hit by Ashby but the challenge hard Howell threw on Guerrero and Center going from first to third there's the throw and now say coming back to the bag at first it was in time but Garvey with a high tag and Ashby got in so the Astros lead it one to nothing with how now at 3rd and Ashby at first and Craig Reynolds the batter hitting 219 it's been wild here for two days right now the atmosphere though is very church like very quiet infield DoublePlay depth except per se Ronnie is up at 3rd wanted on the couch really surprised a Letarte how took third base there he is and there under at first Ashby ball not hit that deep in left center field and Guerrero's throw off target to save the Astros trying to make things happen and they are Houston leading one did a thing with how a third - me at first and the 1o pitch to Reynolds is fouled back 1 & 1 the count bird booting a Texan now making his home here in Southern California 30 years old butin lifetime with a hundred 19 wins in 101 lawsuits 10th beer in the bigs broken with the Cubs back in 1971 [Applause] the 1 1 2 2 & 1 the count we have an effects mic in the Houston dugout near you can hear the cheering from time to time the cheering is not coming from the stand to tell you that they've got a few years boosters here but most of the noise you hear from something positive happens for Houston comes from that dugout 2 & 1 the count nobody out runners at first and third in the second inning - OH - look at the Dodger outfield a lagoons Craig Reynolds Dusty Baker in left is playing Reynolds as a dead right-handed pull hitter as if he would be a right-handed pull hitter you see Baker only about 20 feet off the line Guerrero in left center and Monday about 50 feet off the line and right Reynolds having an off year pioneer for the Astros last year only 219 letters first and third two balls two strikes account [Applause] the game slowly paced so far over so much at stake it's understandable here's the to to delivery [Applause] Monday coming in for a base hit that scores how and stop at second his Ashby Reynolds drives in his 28th run Lasorda will visit the mound and it's two nothing Houston big base hit by Reynold he got an off-speed pitch and knocks in a run with a single [Music] Bobby Castillo is up and throwing in the bullpen as we take a look at the basin again there it is again a knuckle curve that time by hoop and rebels right on it was seen Monday charge this ball drops in front of him it almost got fired bird who is coming out again as we mentioned earlier there's been no major injury to hook this season but his arm is with a contender and as a consequence was so much on the line today LaPorta can ill afford to take any chances he's got to go to the man so he goes early and here comes Bobby Castillo and again we revert back to what we said in terms of you'll see a lot of fellas in situations like this coming in early you would never see Castillo or rarely see him in the second ending of a regular season game it's a very unhappy Burt Hooten he made mistakes with the breaking stuff he picked up two strikeouts back in the first inning both with fast balls getting cabal and Morgan but here in the Houston second bunt single by Cedeno how reached on an air in charge de Burt Hooten asked me a run-scoring single and then the base hit by Craig Reynolds driving in run number two Bobby Castillo coming on for the 60th time this season good screwball as matter of fact he taught that screwball to the Dodgers 19 year old lefty their fellow neighbor Fernando Valenzuela who has shocked and stunned everybody with his performance down the stretch Bobby Welch has been placed on the disabled list for Los Angeles it would incidentally be Welch's start today in this series were a healthy but he's gone and so as a consequence Bert Hooton was working today with only three days rest which was odd Castillo is marking home in the road as you can see he enjoys the cookies here actually Welch his turn would have been yesterday but the Dodgers having to go to the four-man rotation in the absence of and as a consequence Putin coming back with three days rest instead of four so the Astros on top to nothing in the second inning before right now a very quiet crowd at Dhaka City you know I had a chance to watch both these ball clubs over the last few weeks the Dodgers in that series in Cincinnati when they swept the Reds winning three Cincinnati coming back here to series later and sweeping the Dodgers saw Houston matter of fact burn rule they almost had the no-hitter against San Francisco then on last Sunday when Cincinnati stopped Houston in Houston the Astros came back you see their road record and at home 50 to 55 26 at home 37 43 on the road they've had a tough time and al talked about that the fact that they have really had a tough time here at Dodger Stadium losing the last five here the Dodgers with similar marks Coleman Road they've won about two out of three at Dodger Stadium so Castillo ready to work on rule now up there to bunt lays it down Castillo will go to third and hits him on the force so they cut down the lead runner Alan Ashby sliding in for the out one away as Reynolds advances to second and ruled as a board at first and waving off the jacket on a warm and pleasant afternoon see it again here it is again not really that bad a punt by Verne rule but a lot of credit to Bobby Castile off the mound very very quickly and the throw to Cey at third in plenty of time for Alan Ashby so there's one away here in the Houston second now I was going to say the Astros really battled back against the Atlanta Braves when they swept him winning three in the dull body has not a lot of run against Houston this season he's worked 8 and 2/3 innings make it 9 now getting the out here without giving up a run to the Astro two on one out and it's low one in one here's that screwball and you were talking about a moment ago out he's got a good one for a walk in the first-inning Reynolds at second rule at first got around on it for too much wanted to that's what happens for the high screwball normally you want it down and away from the left-handed batter that's Daniel's earn in the Dodger dugout Danny will be a big help of course in the playoffs if the Dodgers get there managed the Phillies up until September of last year down as green of course now managing the Eastern Division champions and isn't it interesting that three rookie managers because Green would technically be a rookie in light of the fact is his first full season have won divisional championships this year to it to the Yankees of course managed by Dick Howser Kansas City managed by first year man Jim Frey Green took over late in the season for Philadelphia they're all going in and their counterpart will be either Lasorda or burden neither a stranger to playoff experience two to delivery going away walk out now let's see about the runner [Music] and struck out 51 times this season three and two and one out I'm running them I think so too rentals and second rule at first there they go and the pitch is up and away to load the bases so cool drawers his second walk and they're loaded up now for me miss Cavell who struck out at the bridge Reynolds 1/3 rule is its second [Music] and air is cool enos Cavell the Dodger infield DoublePlay depth the Bell is one of the tougher man to double [Music] leading to nothing in the second anyway one out [Applause] good fastball by the inside footage the bells first time up Putin struck him out on a high tight fastball [Music] [Applause] what in line it's early but I'd say this is a critical stage of the game for the Dodgers you can't let a game like this get out of hand it's to nothing right now what they really need is a double play a look at money basketball red atoms bird poop Rogers already with activity again in the bullpen joke Beckwith has just gotten up [Applause] here's the 1 1 pitch down the way to play off is that high fastball again the Cobell Bastille the pitch before coming with a slider off the outside corner there's Beckwith in the Dodger bullpen in the right back with a fastball up around the letters Astros dugout - nothing they leave Phil Niekro [Applause] if we do go to a divisional playoff tomorrow the diners will go with the goats there off and on right-hander with the big contract sign is a free agent the Astros will counter with Joe Niekro who's 119 and he would be pitching with three days rest out vo for the plate one to hit in the air down the line and curling so the cat remains a ball of two strikes with Morgan waiting on deck interestingly enough there has never been a divisional playoff in the National League they started the system in 1969 when they broke both leagues into divisions there has never been a one-game playoff in the National League and there's only been one in the American League that was the Yankee Boston game in 1978 at Fenway won by New York janki's that gear going on to win the World Series one ball and two strikes account or a great screwball that time by Castile and the bottom fell out of that bigger against the Cobell today that was a beauty bottom dropped out of that baby here it is again there's a screwball bad pitch in the dirt and Cobell chased it so two down Castillo we'll get you to do that he's the type of pitcher who will bounce one up occasionally and you'll go fishing for it get that great motion out when he throws that screwball he looks like he's coming at you with a fastball he's got the great motion as the pitcher would like to have with a changeup off-speed stuff [Applause] Joe Morgan over one struck out in the first inning nations are loaded when Reynolds rule and for [Applause] strike one bid mortgage that's Lincoln right he's not al we were out here early this morning about 10:30 this morning is a matter of fact Jill Morgan headed out toward the batting cage underneath the left-field stands here at Dodger Stadium limping noticeably to take some extra cuts captions playing and it slow doing one and the same holds true for Davey Lopes he was out here as a matter of fact in the batting cage taking his regular batting practice but in shorts and a t-shirt Morgan went down for about 15 or 20 minutes there's davey lopes use going ahead to nothing bases-loaded two out of a second the cool one de Morgan is popped up in Furguson coming back to the screen [Applause] comes out of the bullpen the Dodgers right in it the Astros had a chance to break it wide open get two runs three hits leave three middle of a second to nothing new stadium in Los Angeles Houston on top leading to nothing and bird rule taking his warmups that's the man he'll face leading off Steve Garvey Ron Cey and Pedro Guerrero will follow Steve Garvey the typical Garvey like season Steve needing just one hit today to reach the 200 mark [Music] and four for eight and the first two games here thus far this weekend [Applause] and if he doesn't need the only before tingle man to do it [Applause] among those who are active right now only Pete Rose has had six 200 it's evening roses at 10 on one account on Garvey on one you know how the first couple of games in this series and watching Steve Garvey play for so many years he showed some some emotion on a couple of occasions that runs scoring double as you look at Tommy Lasorda knocking in a run it's one of the few times that I have ever seen guy he showed that kind of emotion after he double driving in a run he gave a big salute at second base and then the home run took off the batting helmet through both arms up in the air here at Dodger Stadium this kind of a series will do it to anybody I don't care how low-key are one in one the man that the Dodgers are starting to refer to as their mr. October Reggie Jackson is already off to a blazing start in the month and we'll see Reggie in Kansas City on win [Music] Barbee leading the league in hits and he's the only man with a today's a can to get 200 [Applause] but no play by Cavell and that's Facebook number two Garvey and again saluting the fans here at Dodger Stadium a standing ovation for the Dodger first baseman and Garvey so here claim of the crowd the crowd still on its feet and still can - we will go to the get to work now on Ron say [Applause] drawing most points to avoid over that if we have a playoff tomorrow say at the plate Barbie at first base [Applause] the biggest game of his career [Applause] rule is one of those pictures Alex just won't give into it or yield if he's going to work the outside corners stay on the corners to you as he tried there on Ron say he's going to stay that way very strong does he make a mistake control is excellent averaging only one point six six walks four nine great League [Applause] [Applause] [Music] came right back gali missed off the outside fun with a breaking ball came right back say missing he's such an easy guy to catch out people like burne rule who I said earlier don't have the overpowering type fastball sinker slider curve and a chain Doug Harvey on plate but that one may have been a bit Lola sort of thought so as did Ron saying yeah but he's a good one Doug Harvey or the sinking fastball from rule that diamond Ron says Phillip said at the carbide egg hobby Barbie at first base and nobody out bottom of the second inning the asteroid [Applause] rule keeping him close nonetheless that expression never changes though bird looks the same hello and out in front of a breaking ball the mistakes I was talking about that burn rule seldom makes hanging curve that time to say but that's a tough pitch to hit in fair territory I'll that ball is off the inside quarter a hitter sees it so very well but it's a tough pitch to hit fair right fool is there one guy take care of say [Applause] that's a tough position to play on a day like today actually this particular moment they're out the others difficult the wedding cake tank architecture with adex back of the plate the light colored shirts you know if you look in the outfield today al it doesn't seem quite as bad as it was yesterday the outfitter said yesterday it was really really tough [Applause] be back now getting back to the finger injury Davern rule and again we don't know just how bad it is he said he had two stitches taken but all those photos the first face they would seem to be taking a toll on him but he doesn't seem to be bothered at all he doesn't there's no discernible difference between rule today and the rule we've seen of late [Applause] Furguson is on deck [Applause] popped up right side pool coming on those Morgan he'll handle it and does two down with Garvey silat burst and now we'll see Ferguson sorry fool a lot of people think he may be the most valuable asset [Applause] a solid year for about watching that flyball hit to short right Morgan when he took off and started running after the ball Ali appears to be still limping and hurting a bit shaky Ferguson at the plate Fergie with nine home [Applause] killing almost automatic now every other pit yourself a rule to go over the first days Barbie taking a relatively Garvey with only six stolen bases for the year trying to keep him close Los Angeles nothing [Applause] Furguson only one for 17 against you see in this season with what a one huh Friday night you got a hanging slider when he hit that home run the other night a little surprise that rule came with a breaking ball the first pitch going in sinker Barclay the number one pitch for burn rule that's if he works him inside you Ferguson likes to get his irons out [Applause] her rules finger must be used a zipper because he's not bothered at all nothing [Applause] the breaking will one in one on Ferguson the Dodgers trying to get into the playoffs for the third time in four years the Astros trying to get into the playoffs for the first time ever two in one account remember last year they went right down to the end finishing second they were right in the race until the final week of the season wound up a season a game and a half back this year there's been a good quiet the Dodgers the rest put battle with arrest warrant bottle contente spit first that time by rule I just don't believe you like the sign or the location al the pitch that was called by Ashby and Joe Ferguson now heading back toward the on-deck circle [Applause] indicated to Ashby said run me by a new set of signs we're just a live throw to first base and many times the pitcher will do that if he doesn't like location that you've given him not only the sign but the location maybe he may like the sign a fastball you may go inside he wants to go outside he'll shake you off come back back with the same sign but to a different location he does jeon Ferguson [Applause] the first place and again steal things we played about 55 minutes and we're in the second inning why the right-field rule racing over one hands it bull started to come in and then drift it toward the line and put three nines in the score book here in the second after a single by Garvey leading off no runs one hit leave Steve end of to Houston to and Los Angeles Channel Football League today the Eagles have made it four out of five as they beat the Redskins 24 to 14 the Cardinals at an easy time of it with the Saints winning 40 to 7 and the Steelers in a relatively difficult time of it with the Minnesota Vikings of Bloomington but Pittsburgh has now won four out of five 23:17 over the bikes Al Michaels Bob Uecker at Dodger Stadium third inning as Jose Cruz leads off for Houston and Castillo misses outside want to go Houston to Los Angeles nothing in the third count even out one and one Kruse flied to right in the third he'll be followed by Cedeno and how [Applause] two and two on cruise cruise another guy that Dodger outfield out plays hit the ball toward the opposite field the gap for Hemans in right-center a big gap between Monday and Guerrero out there ball is right the bottom falls out of that baby - steel picks up his second strike up [Applause] one out of the third inning and sees our study mio is the batter look at this screwball again this is a beauty cruise right over the top of it sock cast steel bend that elbow the other way when you show those slow-motion shots of a pitcher out releasing a curved wall or a screwball screwball from a right-hander like Castillo you just pop your wrist on your elbow the opposite way sometimes wonder why you don't snap a lot of other things Bobby Castillo local boy went to Lincoln High School here in Los Angeles 25 years old Lincoln High in the neighborhood really not very far from Chavez Ravine the one thing about Castillo al that a lot of school ball pitchers don't like to do is throw it through a right-handed batter because it's breaking down and he'll do it want to know the gal the other Dodger right-handed relief artist here a few years back throw them to everybody Mike Marshall anytime any count basic staple for a relief pitcher some sort of trick pitch or something that'll drop I think the thing with Castillo Ali's got a decent fastball and they know he throws the screwball you'll throw it any time but you you know if you go up there looking for screwballs off this guy that's when he gets the fastball bite pitches inside he's got a good sinker hits a deep left field Dusty Baker going back gauging it now leave to makes attacks against the bullpen fence so say Zach Cedeno comes within a couple of feet of hitting one out and there are two now he'll see Baker again going back now he hits the warning track knows about where he is and as al said a couple more feet nits out of here but a catch for Baker taking care of Cedeno hard how the batter bunted in the second inning and reached on an error by the Dodger starter Burt Hooten a strike and I could talk about Mike Marshall Allan Roth reminding us Jim brewer another picture at a great screwball and of course the youngster the 19 year old Valenzuela has the same pitch now I went to the cow Bobby's got another greater leave her here al some earrings back by the name of Ron ferret out that so it he had a beauty [Music] no balls two strikes the count the number back to Castillo he takes care of how and the Astros in the third [Applause] [Music] the score remains Houston to Los Angeles nothing Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on a sun-baked Sunday in October a lot of folks in the seats today hold tickets for what they hope will be games three four and five of the National League Championship Series the series to open in Philadelphia Tuesday we'll have it for you on ABC from Philadelphia and eight o'clock Eastern Time American League Championship Series beginning on Wednesday at three o'clock Eastern Time and fan City Game two in the National League series Wednesday night at 8:00 Eastern big week of baseball coming up on ABC Darryl Thomas to leadoff in the 3rd takes a strike oh and one Thomas Castillo and Lopes the eight nine and one hitters Darrel switch hitter likes to lay it down occasionally so you can see Cobell and on the cutout at third an account is even at one and one Thomas honored before the game al is the Dodgers most versatile player this year and rightly so filling in now for Bill Russell two and one we've had a chance to talk quite a bit about Darrell and our Sunday and Monday night got roads this season Amanda's dress position is centerfield Willie when he could play everywhere literally until his goal is to someday play all nine positions in one game which would be terrific if you were clinching the pennant fix it early and that's late in the season wanted to do something to bring some fans into the park the looper to left field crews give a nod from timber they said so Darrell tell mr. the leadoff single here in the bottom of the third inning [Applause] Bobby Castillo coming up in town this is single breaking ball and he got upstairs alley heaved on loan inside with two good sliders second one Thomas missed by quite a margin but that breaking ball he just slapped in the left-field and the Dodgers have a runner on two nothing Houston hard how over to talk things over with Vern rule Castillo as a hitter he's 1 for 8 this season he's 1 for 19 lifetime and Bobby is up there of course to pot in this situation with Cobell in on the grass at third [Applause] - nothing Astros in the five of the third Thomas at first base and nobody out [Applause] [Applause] going over again to drive Thomas back the pattern he exhibited with great frequency against the only other baserunner driving in the second inning the pitch is up and in and the count want to know how he's flying in from first base and develop in third they were both about 30 feet from the plate as the pitch came in to Castillo awful tough to make of banal as you said Cobell and how bull charging when the pitch starts on its way toward home plate they're playing especially to Belle there's how holding to the runner at first but Cobell at third is about 10 feet up the line and when the pitch comes they both breaking stuff to lay it down without somebody making a play on you too and oh is the count rule that time trying to get upstairs for the fastball the toughest pitch the plot a fastball upstairs really with anything on it rule as we said earlier is not overpowering but anything upstairs is tough and burn maybe in trouble right now that finger may have given way well burne rule with the sutured finger burden out there along with the Astros trainer he's gone out and that's it of course if they have to make a pitching change here the new pitcher will get as much time as is necessary to warm up so there was nobody working in the bullpen it's gonna be interesting to see is going to be Andujar there goes rule so fern looked like he was having no problems at all through the first two innings and all of a sudden here in the third the base hit by Thomas to a know the cannot sto and rule has to give it up and so it'll be joaquin andujar you know it's amazing Alan was able to pitch as long as he did matter of fact even start this ball game filbert and talking things over with Andujar I was really surprised it was in the pitch you can imagine the folks who call baseball and maybe have played a little baseball is a very disgusting Bill Burton heading back toward the dugout and walking onto our ball to work now for Houston there's fern rule very dejected in the Houston dugout but to go as far as he did with pitches I just I can't imagine it I really can't I know what it is to have a blister on a throwing hand and the pain involved in that and to have a couple of stitches put in two days ago on Friday evening then again he got a wonder out all those throws the first pitch the extra throws but and didn't seem to be bothering him at that time that high time fastball that he threw to - steel was the one that did it there you see it right there so - nothing the score with Houston leading nobody out - and all the Kanaka steal and play resumes and Thomas at first base on devar appearing in his 30 15 21 times he has worked in relief of course he got a lot of those stars because of this stroke suffered by JR Richard which caused the shuffling in the rotation when JR was in the rotation Joaquin was not and was very angry about it and has so stated from time to time over the past couple of years that have been not gonna pitch him every fourth or fifth day he wants out of there he is a man who has great stuff he's a type of pitcher that if he's really on here a lot of trouble but he's been very erratic and he's a man who ironically enough after complaining for a good part of the season about not being one of the mainstays in the rotation is now trust into a situation where everything is really on the line Andujar has completed his warmups it's very interesting how this game is being managed right now Tommy Lasorda has his back totally to the wall no burden has a little bit more breathing space the sorta was forced to go to one of his short men in the bullpen Casteel in the second inning Burton has the luxury because he has the game in hand of going to man Andujar though he does have three good short men Dave Smith Frank reporting in joe sambito i would tend to think if this work tomorrow that you might see one of those three in here instead of Andujar but he has the [Applause] he's got a two-run lead and a chance to see what on davar can do here Babita steel at the plate here's the 200 pitch taken for a strike and the count 2 & 1 the thing about castillo al is the fact that he has really pitched like a short man really got out of a jam in the second and then worked a 1-2-3 third look at it - from the stand point out and uplift for the Dodgers - steel coming in to shut down Houston in the second and again in the third nobody on here's the 2-1 to Castillo Bobby punched foul and the count 2 and 2 if Castillo has one sacrifices here and that is the only sacrifice of his major league career in a high fastball that time Allah took pitch to bunt and to our coming upstairs and Castillo falling off two balls and two strikes the count on Bobby Castillo Houston to Los Angeles nothing with nobody out in the third inning and Thomas at first base [Applause] now the thing about an to our one of the things about an to iron you touched on briefly started taking his warmup pitches he can get tough think it's tough sometimes when you've got everything going drops down beside he comes all different kind of angles very tough on right-handed batters if he's got it all going walking from the dominican republic and in that sense he reminds you a lot of Juan Marichal his countrymen they closed that time this time [Applause] darrel Thomas taking a little time at first base down to dust himself off here's that last throw by Anwar and an excellent move to first base [Applause] the tag just a bit late by how to keep Thomas close - I'm Castillo Bobby has already squared the bunt and bunts foul for strike three so Castillo cannot advance Thomas my new heart gets the strikeout and we have one down now in the third inning Davey Lopes the batter [Applause] Lopes flied out in the first inning [Applause] most playing with a special brace around his neck cream and soft race created by Bill Doolin the Dodgers traded earlier this season you can see it protruding just a bit there through the uniform pinched nerve in his neck this week the lineup Jack for Katya seen a lot of action a second base the rookie one into the cow so that bought him a couple of days ago al when he lost that flyball that caused the Dodger defeat they somebody looked up in the air he got dizzy just that pinched nerve really bothered him easy play for Davey Lopes normally that was in San Diego last Sunday [Applause] [Music] the fact that and who at times gets very very erratic good fastball curve slider I think at times he tries to do too much you talked about Juan Marichal the big high leg kick and I think at times an to our goes to the same Thomas goes the pitch is inside the throw down there gets him and Morgan comes up limping so there may have been a cross layout you can see Thomas doesn't like the call and frankly I didn't think that Ashby had a chance in the world to get him looked like Thomas had a good jump and look like he'd make it relatively easily and that colosi says no sir he's gone now the throw excuse me al the throw perfect by Ashby the other thing Ella tough pitch to handle high tight fastball backing Lopes away Ashby had to reach inside to get it then come back out there are you gonna look at the jump by Thomas he had a good jump as al set this throw is right on the bag by Ashby you'll get a look at the headfirst slide by Thomas colosi right there and the tag by Morgan may have been a bit late I don't know he gets him on the elbow maybe from this angle this year this one looked like he had him al this angle looked like he had him there's Thomas coming now and Morgan his knee is there that's why he got him he never got to the bag and a good call by colosi and Joe came up limping so Morgan literally takes the bass away from his sir good play by Morgan a good shot there yeah I know put a different angle Priaulx pitch is a strike in the count is three and one so that's the man it's a good share of the credit in addition to Ashley strobing right there well I want to throw out excellent 3 1 delivery [Applause] another angle now on Thomas's attempt to steal there's Thomas with a good jump are you sorry how very important guy there he goes he hollered here's the throw coming down watch Morgan's [Applause] Thomas never got to the bag takes the bag away [Applause] well you wonder if that's simply by accident or whether that's predetermined a mortgage line disable of one way throughout Monday the batter [Applause] and the pitch is outside for a ball want to go to cow so both starters Hooten and rule the god monday as you can see is really turned it on since the break [Applause] to the left [Applause] Astros leading to nothing they picked up their runs in the second inning today Neal bunted his way on stole second went to third on an error by Mouton Ashby single to score Cedeno and Reynolds single to right to score how and that did it for who three hits and an error [Applause] [Applause] [Music] Davey Lopes at first base Lopes with 23 steals 23 out of 30 there he goes the pitch is fouled back well into the cow [Applause] Lopes with a good jump that time and Rick Monday al with a good pitch to drive to the opposite feeling you'll get a look one more time there's Lopes 23 steals for the year he goes and as I said that pitch to Rick Monday was a good ball to hit to the opposite field a fastball out over the plate he fouled it back one ball two strikes the count on Monday [Applause] joaquin andujar bays with an erratic hop and goes to Morgan for the force on Davey Lopes who comes up limping no runs one hit one man left on we played three full in LA and it's still the Astros 2 and the Dodgers nothing myrna's passes from the first row the reserve level what Stan as we go to the fourth inning the crowd the noise undulating today the Astros get going and it's very quiet Dodgers look like they might get something going the clapping and the cheering begins and right now it's quiet with Houston that the plate is we go to the fourth inning two nothing Astros and Allen asked me to lead things off bottom of the order Ashby Reynolds and Andujar fourth inning final game of the regular season if the Astros win they go on to Philadelphia as the Western Division champions if the Dodgers win we'll have a divisional playoff tomorrow one game to decide it all and we'll have it for you at 4:00 Eastern Time on ABC liner by Lopes into right field for a base a so Alan Ashby is two for two with a couple of singles and Craig Reynolds will be the batter - be having a good series he's really responding down the stretch here he's 5 / 8 in the three games and he's also done a good job back to the plate he really adds Allie's he's always been an outstanding receiver he's got an excellent throwing arm he's accurate the thing always with ashbey was his bad he was a switch-hitter throughout his career forgot about switch-hitting when is a left-handed batter strictly left-handed last year but this year back switch-hitting rentals at the plate Kraig drove in a run in the second inning with a single arrived now the way I wanna count [Applause] let's say it's been a tough weekend for a lot of the folks with the Astros new owner this year John McMullen has taken over and relatively quiet low-key towel Smith running the baseball anything one and one saw a towel before the game to look like you've been up for about nine nights everybody with this Houston contingent here in LA al looks the same way they really do say how do you do it how do we win it 3-2 in the opener two to one yesterday today leading to nothing 1 & 1 the count bunted sharply towards say he looks at second and shuttles to the out at first as Ashley goes down a second so Reynolds able to move them along as they utilize the sacrifice in the eighth spot with Andujar coming up I believe he may have had a chance at Ashby on second base I was surprised you didn't go to second he got the runner at first easily ball bunted rather sharply by Reynolds and say is right there now watch him take the look at second Ashby not a quick runner I think say had a shot at him throws out Reynolds by plenty with Garvey covering Andujar five for 29 this season that's 172 we've got a 179 on the graphic with a home run three for his career the guy that really loves to hit al he doesn't make contact that often but he doesn't get cheated watch the rips this guy takes [Applause] every time I watch this guy hit I really get a kick out of him during batting practice when the pitchers take batting practice in Houston you'll switch him but in the course of the ballgame he stays strictly as a right-handed batter but he loves the swing he really does got jammed on that stung his hands Castillo saying alright it'd be good to look like I'm gonna see you like a hitter go onto the couch fourth inning with one out Houston leading to nothing strike two delivery we told you poke she doesn't get cheated goes up there ripping Bobby Castillo has his third strikeout it'll take a look at Terry Puhl great irony as I say with Andujar pitching in the game who knows if we get down to the end you could see a 19 year old from Mexico and a key spot for the Dodgers Fernando Valenzuela they won't hesitate to use him fascinating the things that happened is he can counter at the end things you'd never would have believed even a month earlier Poole takes a strike and the count is going one really is Ali first two games in this series both these clubs one two in pitching in the National League Houston on top the Dodgers are second the first two games pitchers battle the big air by Landis toy in the opening game gave the Dodgers new life the pitching has been excellent the o1 pitch outside 101 Terry Puhl the Astros leadoff hitter and team leader in home runs with 13 they moved Terry down from time to time this year into the three spots now they've got Morgan there today one in one account two down the left-center field might be trouble Baker racing over and can't get it that will make it three to nothing as pool round second and holds with a double Terry Puhl drilling one to the gap to score Alan Ashby and the Astros and another big two-out base hit al reached out for a high pitch that time from Castillo and a diving try by Baker he just couldn't catch up to it there you see Guerrero coming from centerfield there's the diving try by Baker in the balls by him run scoring two-out double for pool three nothing Houston so there's Terry with a perfect day two walks in the double and eNOS Cobell who has struck out twice stands in [Applause] the crowd again very silent Oh goodbye [Applause] three runs five hits for the Astros no runs two hits and one error for the Dodgers [Applause] oh and one everything back to five it'd be like this again the slow pace continuing the strike one delivery the count is even one to one each mistake made these games out is so very very critical now and more so for the Dodgers going back to that pitch by Castillo it works so very well since coming on in the second got that pitch upstairs on Terry Puhl ripping it through a double Dodgers must win gotta win st already 1-1 pitch is popped foul back up first should drift out of play and it does the type of game you call so where if somebody makes a great play people always remember it if you make a terrific play and may in a day game during the week or something you remember for a while but it recedes from your memory but something happens in a game like this people talk about it for you very true Ally I tell you going back to the sacrifice by Reynolds again I thought se had a chance at Ashby at second base selected to go to first and it turned out to be a run for Houston it's not to put any kind of a rap on say because he took the sure out [Music] [Applause] but fulle delivered there's Morgan he's on deck 2 and 2 the count on eNOS Cobell [Applause] now holding in the Dodger bullpen we'll have activity again as Rick Sutcliffe he's throwing red Adams the Dodger pitcher could do a little piecing Danny Ozark ground Tama the shorter back of them go into the cabin Cobell all the second his fourth strikeout Cobell has now struck out three times they get a run two heads leave one after three and a half the astros 3 and the dr. stadium in los angeles al michaels and Bob Uecker whitneyhl wall market opened back in 1962 Bill Burton was a pretty fair outfielder in his time and a good hitter couldn't come to that hi dad call his own number on the option three nothing the Astros lead it Houston trying to wrap up the National League West and the Dodgers trying to force a one-game divisional playoff tomorrow Baker Garvey and say three right-handed batters coming up against Joaquin Andujar be joined us late for starters gone for movement blasted and anyone kayvon rule lashes flush not took over and it's three nothing Astros they scored twice in a second and once in the fourth and here's who grounded out in the first inning that's the Opel one irva way want to go take a look at the end to RL when he goes to his deliveries got that herky-jerky style his leg kick at times fluctuate down up and it causes him at times to be so erratic but once he gets in the groove and if he does he's tough he's really nasty tough for a right-hander one ball one strike the count as easy as burn rule was we talked about that earlier this guy is just the opposite [Applause] tommy lasorda well he's been through the wringer [Applause] again and again and again but the Dodgers with their backs to the wall battling back Friday that link yesterday [Applause] [Music] talking between innings out you got to wonder how long do would go with Andujar he has a tendency to get wild Houston up by a score of three nothing another chord away today forget about tomorrow I don't respect that Burton will go very get yourself into trouble 3-1 pitch hit the left the third consecutive inning the diaries have a leadoff single [Applause] nobody out [Music] Garvey today 34th consecutive game that last base hit by Baker and two are falling behind I've heard so many many times you can't pitch from behind sit on fastball say 1 2 [Applause] just fishing during batting practice plane he hit yesterday [Applause] Joe Morgan desired how ahead to the mound here a couple of words for [Applause] [Music] look at Morgan I mean when you see the batting average come up to 46 and you say the Astros didn't get their money he's the quarterback of his team you could see him election armoire Morgan is a great psychologist he's one of the most book smart guys of the day the game of baseball the man is well-versed in a lot of areas he understands people he knows how to talk to people Andujar is a different sort of individual and that's the way Morgan field he investigated the 200 pitches popped up right side whatever he said it was a gym how is right there and makes the catch in fair territory one out but you can say in a situation like that now they've got the three nothing lead they're leading by a game they've got everything going for them today land of ours gonna do a strike everybody play but Morgan might have - you don't start putting guys being too far don't try to necessarily work the black of the plate or get it right at the knees or whatever throws right yes sir I agree can't pitch from behind and win just can't do it Ron Cey flied to right in the second inning [Music] nacre at first base build on by Hal [Applause] Ron likes to crowd the place a lot of times and save backs away from a pitch the crowd responds naturally they don't have the angle you do looking in from centerfield and they think it's a ball again with an Tamar now here's a guy so far off the outside corner when that first pitch a breaking ball he's such a tough guy to hit again she can't look for cookies and zones off this guy you might take a peek at times as a hitter and look at the catcher sitting around the outside for he might pick up a target you're thinking outside this guy's lavell a whistle one on the inside corner to you he's so unpredictable he's tough to figure out you're up there as a hitter unless you [Applause] while there's a blazing fastball right there up around the Leonard bad pitch to say but they're tough to hit against al they really are they're tough for an umpire to work there are hitters you talk about guess Tanner's guessing certain pitches a lot of hitters will tell you when we guess location to look for something high but for something low inside or outside that's where you can't do it against I'm doing exactly what to delivery got him swinging he worked all sides of the plate that time it's so very tough talking about him up on top 3/4 arm style you can run that last pitch back I don't know if we have it for you or not he dropped down almost around his kneecaps and came with that sinking fastball to say so tough on right-handers and you said looking for a pitch in his own forget it with this guy Heath Guerrero flied to right in the second inning Baker at first two down then Guerrero takes a strike on the outside part oh and one it's tough for an umpire I want to get back to what I said before about an umpire working behind home plate if you look at Baker at first and I'm fire we'll set up where that catcher puts the target he drops down and Guerrero bails out I went to when you set a target the umpire figures you're working off the outside he's going to get there now if that pitcher throws a pitch on the inside corner it may be a strike but the umpire at times may miss it because he's looking just like you are it's a good point [Applause] ground level leo struck it out blow it by so it came for the third consecutive inning the Dodgers had squandered a leadoff single and we go to the fifth in LA with the score Houston three and the Dodgers nothing Guerrero there he is right there I got it don't worry about it Billy what pressure okay we played for three runs five hits for Houston no runs three hits one error for the Tigers stiffening and the play-by-play Bob Uecker all right Alan Jill Morgan will lead it off crews to follow an incident three nothing Houston hanging curveball or is it dumb strikes carpi and Joe Morgan take a look at Jill Morgan breaking ball up around the letters on Joe and [Applause] Joe Morgan has been in five National League Championship Series with Cincinnati trying for six with Houston hit on the ground towards second Davey Lopes [Applause] and you see Morgan noticing noticeably limping he's been bothered by that for a couple of days now left the ballgame with tenderness soreness in the leg but today everybody plays Kruse flied to right and struck out he went around to farts as Doug Harvey one strike now you got to be wondering about Bobby Castile now he's used primarily in short relief the fact that he may be getting tired well looking since the second it will be his last inning because when the Dodgers bat in the bottom of the fifth he's due up third so he'll have done the job and down by three you've got to go to your bench just missed ball one strike two it's three nothing Houston in the fifth inning June the second in a big run scoring job double in the fourth my pool low 2 & 2 the Dodger bullpen Rick Sutcliffe up for the second time two two two crews fouled out of play of a high screwball part how he's do next Cedeno first then how the Astros can't wait [Music] center field Guerrero broke back a step come on [Applause] fine running catch in Surrey took a step back on that ball when it was hit but came on to make the catch to man out and Cedeno yet a bunch single back in the second stole a base and scored a base hit by Alan Ashby talking at the top of the telecast how tough it is to play here in Dodger Stadium in the outfield and again Guerrero taking that step back you know the fly ball drop yesterday wala was hit by a part Howell felon for a single led to a Houston run Castillo misses outside you know it's an audio-visual problem both visually we've talked about that and the audio part would be the crowd itself you can't hear the crack of the back that distinctively yeah you got to wonder too when you look at the background here from the outfield looking in the upper deck the second deck three deck of fair here at Dodger Stadium how often an outfielder loses the ball there you see it you really have to stay with them relocate them so we wonder about line drives that are really hit ball one strike one the sedan yo Bobby Castillo 1 & 2 now bill Burton Deacon Jones and Jim yes sir it was deep one ball and two strikes to mitt out Houston 5th inning they lead three nothing in the air right field Monday coming on he's there so Houston goes probably in the fifth inning three up and three down at the end of four and a half innings of play it is still the Astros over the Dodgers three nothing the Dodger bullpen Sutcliffe the right-hander and the rookie sensation Valenzuela Fernando Valenzuela Joe Ferguson will lead it off in the Dodger 5th inning against Joaquin Andujar who was done a fine job [Applause] runner on back in the third shot Castile by the bunt with two strikes about in for his track on walked Wolfson got Monday on a fielder's choice gave up a leadoff single to Baker in the fourth inning but then worked out of it striking out the final to say and Guerrero and he will face Joe Ferguson leading off in the dr. Phil Ferguson's first time up against burn ruly lined hard to write one ball and no strikes you look up and down this Dodger lineup and especially against a guy like Andujar was upstairs sidearm 3/4 one down Lopes a right-handed batter Baker Garvey say Guerrero Ferguson all right handers against a very tough right-handed pitcher there's Gerald Thomas [Applause] her rule started this game two innings left after enduring a on the index finger in his pitching hand tore open some stitches and had the lead two and one to Ferguson [Applause] on the ground toward Reynolds in plenty of time for Ferguson for the first out one away in the Dodger 5th Darryl Thomas coming on now he's single his first time up and then was cut down on a perfect crow - Joel Morgan at second flying the steel [Applause] the Dodgers have had the leadoff batter on three times in this game and have yet to score [Applause] on the inside corner is strike the knees Thomas is one of those hitters that likes to hit that hard stuff toward the opposite field off-speed stuff got a chance to poor you but the majority of the stuff that he hits hard stuff talking about fast balls or a hard slider the opposite feel that's the way they claim we'll hold it at first darrel Thomas picks up his second hit today right down the line and his Binks at number four for the Dodgers darrell has that area zeroed in base hit yesterday off Nolan Ryan that way base hit third inning Auburn rule that way today and down the line here Joaquin Andujar so Thomas is 2 for 2 as the divers become their fourth head [Applause] [Music] Gary Thomasson you coming out Bobby Castillo is done as al talked earlier consider now Thomason and balance availeth continues to throw in the Dodger bullpen Sutcliffe is no longer throwing there you see the doctor left-hander what a job that guy is done working for something disability eight games for the Dodgers one to lost struck out 14 13 plus there you see the stats on Gary Thomasson the Dodgers here um three nothing fifth inning Gary Thomasson as a pinch-hitter 10 for 40 frames cause the code person he's back before we get now on rule nuke is that the stitches came apart it opened up cut opened up and that's why burn had to leave the game side of all the Thomason now we talked about the injury to rule Allen have came on that Hittite fastball he threw to Castillo that was the one that did it what Oh drill the right here the main strip the Dodgers for Gary Thomasson correction one out well you listen to that crowd what you have here now is you got ain't getting emotion Gary Thomasson what line been around a number of years with the Giants Yankees A's Vava Tigers and it's a big game here now you go to the top in the order you've got davey lopes coming up and a new baseball put in play by home plate the top of the Dodger order now davey lopes point you made austin abhava mighty tough mission of on doom Oregon's the right-hander's and particularly relevant Furguson they're gonna paint it Thomas in the left-hand hitter got a base hit now the Dodgers are back to the right sides of Mondays on deck another left hand out of play by Lopes your right out and again with a guy like Anwar was corners upstairs Downstairs all over but against the left-hander's slider curveball breaking into you not really that great to the control bill one drill the Senate they said Sudan yo penal planet [Music] good alert baserunning by Gerald Thomas here that's a line drive but it leaves the bank in that great is going to make the tag the Thomas engage him perfectly Darryl was running all the way Cedeno kind of come up throwing can be possibly handed and attached the president ate everything up with a ball cleanly look at the Dodger dugout new life 3 2 1 now 10 is busy Milverton minimal smile heads off toward the mountain [Applause] Bolivia's Dean Smith down there joe sambito is also up the left-hander and he's up early but the season is late and that's what he's up early so burden always maintaining that calm facade that cruel exterior matter what the situation is the expression rarely changes now Bill's gonna have his little chat with Andujar you see the story from Dodger Stadium three-two-one Houston in the Dodger 5th inning Billy Burton really doesn't wind up upset alley and very comp bit of a smile on his face as he talks go into our Doug Harvey now standing right behind bird he was burned he's got sambito and smith and getting something at a time yeah [Music] we're gonna get a pitching change here well it's gonna be sambito know some interesting by play on the man it was almost as if he was reading him out now Billy Byrd was a bit of a smile and joe sambito heads out of the Houston bullpen so the pitching change made here used to Legion three to one in the fifth inning hanger and hang around we'll be back from Dodger Stadium fielding he is six before the Pharisees total 17 saves he's won eight lost four and an excellent earned run average 2.1 or 88 pitched Bill Burton Houston's come on three to one in 88 and a third inning sambito has recorded 74 strikeouts and Mickey Hatcher will come on as a pinch hitter for Rick Monday he's homered once a knock in five appearing in his 56-game for Los Angeles the Dodgers have the tying runs on one out one-out single by Thomas kinship patient by Thomasson by Lopes and the Dodgers around the board Morgan in time and the Astros turned the DoublePlay what a job by sambito one pitch and it's over for the Dodgers here in the fifth inning but they pick up a run and at the end of five it's three to one Houston over LA now from our left-field angle Mickey Hatcher bouncing into a double play on Sam Vito's first pitch Reynolds with the pickup maybe you've got Lopes going into Morgan two men playing hurt getting tangled up then the throw to first by Joe to get him so bill Burton goes to his trump card early he can't save sambito for a prospective situation down the line where you want to go lefty against Lefty he comes in early does the job in the fifth inning and now we look at Fernando Valenzuela what a story Valenzuela on here in the sixth inning [Music] Sonora Mexico his ninth game for the Dodgers in 13 and 2/3 innings has allowed two unearned runs struck out 14 doesn't speak a word of ink well they like to say he doesn't speak the word of English but if you know how to say no you can say it in both languages can't you he can say whim at San Antonio this year in 27 games he worked 174 innings a hundred and sixty-two strikeouts he won 13 lost nine got an excellent screwball the other word he's going to here pretty soon as money that's right he bets dinero to win lonardo right money [Applause] art how will lead it off for the Houston six there's a screwball outside one ball and no strikes low fastball to a No how this afternoon reached on an error and scored in the second his second time up tapped back to the mound it's been Hooten Castillo a now balance away low for the Dodgers rule Andujar and sambito for Houston two balls and a strike valenzuela be 20 years old on November 1st card how hitting the air toward left shudder back to his Guerrero fighting the Sun can he get it he didn't you know very very cut son I went back after that long flyball hit by a mound you saw that baseball almost pop out Guerrero's gonna see sunspots in his dreams after this weekend a drive to center he gauges how hard the ball was hit accurately but there he is he's fighting the Sun fighting the Sun and look as he ice cream filling the hollows in with it hmm again another angle that ball almost popped away from him what out here's Alan Ashby two for two an RBI and a run scored [Applause] a strike to him [Music] [Applause] tommy lasorda the Dodgers trailing 3-1 Houston's sixth inning each game thus far in this series belongs to the pitchers 3-2 in the owner to one yesterday blowing away two balls and two strikes [Music] one ball two strikes Valenzuela very concerned you know you look at these youngsters that come to the major league they said boy in here Valenzuela Dodgers in a tough pennant fight he's out there blowing bubbles he's my concern he's making it look almost too easy of course the Astros haven't seen much of him Ashley he knows it right away no dispute no question about it trickery machine will get you everywhere here's Craig Reynolds on the ground Garvey's got it Valenzuela work Charlie Houston Astros at the end of five and a half innings of play still lead the Dodgers bias corks the Dodgers come to bat in the sixth inning Garvey and say against left-hander joe sambito [Applause] and the Astros got him a 6-4-3 double play jammed up crowd here in Dodger Stadium 52,000 339 maker has bounced to shorten single outside from sambito one or nothing the Dodgers have out hit the Astros today six to five with trail by affair and right in on Alan Ashby my fastball to it all Tommy Lasorda trying to get them going should the Dodgers win today we'll be back with you tomorrow afternoon the Astros trying to end it and head for Philadelphia on the outside quarter two and one the Baker Garvey next [Applause] see what Dusty Baker is done against joe sambito or 4/9 now the Dodgers got a leadoff single from Garvey in the second cooking store Darryl Thomas let it off in the third with a Baker right-field Terry Puhl is there and he's got it for the first out joe sambito after falling behind gets Baker when you watch that slicing tribal all hit by a baker and all of a sudden now when Poole got in a certain area of right field you saw that son hit those glasses out there so very tough he started out like he knew exactly what he was doing and then it was just that bleeding in stood there when he was ginger Lee approaching the ball you're right here's Garvey he had a fun single back in the second the two hundred paces this year whoa from sambito now I think a lot of fans might be interested too and you've seen this happen many times we're an outfielder with those sunglasses infielders - that matter you locate a ball going up in the air first then you pop your glasses down that's the time many times when you lose the ball again and you really have to fight to relocate it 102 Garvey's foul back 1 & 1 [Applause] the Astro is picking up two in the second run number three in the fourth inning the Dodgers scored against and who are in the fifth with a double play hi to Garmin 2 & 1 you look back at that play by Ashby on Darryl Thomas when he tried to steal back in the third a very tough pitch for Ashby to handle inside the Castille and the play by Morgan Luke foul by Garvey Morgan when he took the throw at second base knelt down in front of the bag and Thomas never got to the bag big play you see Joe you can dissect a couple of things to again you know this say go to second on the bunt in the fourth inning mean he does maybe I don't get a run there that's when Poole came up with a big run scoring double Jim to the Garvey Wow back in a breaking ball [Applause] ron's say he's due next [Music] [Applause] for garbey as deep just about straightaway Cedeno shades slightly toward left-center outside ball park is waiting to explode [Applause] that's it three two one Houston Dodgers sixth [Applause] got him with a breaking ball with a big strikeout for sambito 3-2 curveball gets Garvey the sorter and say coming on check out Sam Vito's reaction you know it's October the 5th don't you wow mmm it's tough call by Ashby l32 [Applause] Ron Cey flied to Center and struck out outside one ball no strikes it takes a lot of guts to call a 3-2 breaking ball in a game like this in this situation sixth inning three two one put a run around that brings the tying run up say 27 over on outside again to another sambito after throwing one pitch to Hatcher for the DoublePlay is falling behind each batter here in the 6th inning Baker Garbi and he's 2 nothing to say I passed ball three and OH [Applause] they bothered by a hamstring pool [Applause] bullseye 3-1 now davey lopes owl talked about the injuries to this Dodger ballclub playing hurt Dusty Baker [Applause] we won say in the air left field but not dear Cruz an easy play and sambito works a 1-2-3 Dodgers sixth inning maker Garvey and say go quietly we've completed six now from Dodger Stadium and the Astros still on top why a score of three to one but on Houston on top by a score of three to one and the Dodgers with a new right fielder Mickey Hatcher he stayed in the game after coming on to pinch-hit for Rick Monday back in the fifth inning so Houston trying to nail it down joe sambito will lead it off here in the top half of the seventh inning and all set to call the action for you once again here's al michaels all right you can Santino as a hit of the season is old for 8 he'll be followed by Terry Puhl and then eNOS Cobell Fernando Valenzuela in relief of Putin and Castillo set to work as we go to the seventh and starts him with a pitch that misses for a ball wanna know the count - it o-on sambito Valenzuela the winning picture on Friday night in the dramatic three to ten inning victory santino got the green light to enough sit on a fastball Alec I was interested watching Ferguson with the signs the balance of Whalen not messing around at all just sticking down number one for sambito on the first two pitches and came back with a two old fastball and the count now even to ensue on Joe the National League Championship Series beginning on Tuesday night in Philadelphia the other site still to be determined will it be here or will it be in Houston to to deliveries by the way Game one in the National League Tuesday air time will be 8 o'clock Eastern American League Championship Series the Yankees and the Royals opening on Wednesday afternoon nationally game 2 Wednesday night then they have a day off and the American League indeed - on Thursday night popped up foul ground and play of old force a guy Valenzuela has set down the four men he has faced thus far and will see Terry fool interesting the Dodgers came out with a bio sheet on Valenzuela and he came up they enlist him as five feet eleven and a half and 168 pounds heavy stones yeah might have been a few years ago yeah the face is up and in Fernando looks like he might be a budding mickey lowlich or a bigger lee trevino yeah here's the 100 pitch valve Bank one another calf [Applause] Valenzuela spent most of this season at San Antonio earlier with Lodi and Abel California League 1 & 2 the count it's got to be hard to believe a guy goes to a Class A game in Lodi California in April of May and watching a kid pitch here it is like six months later everything's on the line and they're here for all the marbles one or two on Terry Puhl [Music] bow back it's really hard to believe look at eNOS Cobell he'll be next the composure that balance the whele has Ali takes the sign goes to his wind-up and brings it out I mean no problem no sweat pitch that way first eight games for the Dodgers the Heat's on every game one ball two strikes one out bases empty 3-1 Houston in the seventh inning here's the 1 2 delivery scroogie just missing a great shot of it right there you saw that ball break down and him to Poole just off the inside quarter the tutu delivery is fouled away again [Applause] bachchi crowd today is 50 2339 so the Dodgers for the second time in history over the 3 million mark almost 3.2 this year the to to delivery is a scroogie hit foul count holding that Steve Howe who has pitched brilliantly for the Dodgers in his rookie season in the pen as we look ahead when the Dodgers bat in the bottom of this inning the pitcher is due up fourth breaking ball tapped foul so the count stays at 2 & 2 [Applause] now you watch people like Terry Puhl and this Houston Astro ball club made up of the same type of hitters I can hit a lot of long balls for you but watch the bat control in the bat action by Poole a couple of tough pitches to handle but he's got a piece of three in through the couch Gary Royce his job was done yesterday what a year he had Oh 18 wins [Applause] guess he's a comeback for for a shoo-in for the Comeback Player of the Year award eighteen and six he wound up vanpool is on so Terry aboard pool has now drawn three walks today to go with a double and eNOS capella banner howdy remember that game we did in Cincinnati when the Dodgers swept that series that came to rice pitched what a performance he had against Cincinnati in that game Game two Dodger had to read for that series every once in a while little extra in the later innings for the fastball that was there really responded big win for the Dodgers at that time that a key man all season long here's Cobell as you can see not the finest of afternoons for the Astro third baseman that's a strike go on one for playoff coverage beginning on Tuesday keep Jackson Howard Cosell Don Drysdale bringing you the National League playoffs I'll be in Kansas City and joined there by Jim Palmer of the Orioles and A's manager Billy Martin will also be with us in our coverage of the American League series beginning on Wednesday afternoon he's all nervous about working with he thinks oh yeah I talked to him yesterday is he gonna pick up a couple days actually think along said the only thing I'm concerned about is wearing my cowboy hat batching Paul pal an account let's do it's gonna be interesting I'll hear from Billy Martin I'd say he's got some great ideas for that open ball club next year al what a job he did this year finishing second credible roulette TV was terrible last year I mean they were awful Bob Lacey in a game his first major league start yesterday in Milwaukee and he shut out Milwaukee for nothing [Music] okay Henderson a big year a hundred stolen bases Oh to pay fees outside and the count 1 & 2 on eNOS Cobell I like watching that club play al I really do they run they hit and Ronnie's he's got that kind of a club that's a Billy Martin kind of a ball club and I'm gonna do well they make the same kind of improvement next year and they'll be in the playoffs they don't have to worry about working as a caster he'll be in the dugout Duchin one into the count one out pool at first base Houston leading three to one in the seventh inning Valenzuela missing away and the count 2 & 2 [Applause] I almost look at that time excuse me I'll it almost look like that time they expected pool to be running because Valenzuela hasn't missed by that much since he came on I was wondering it looked like he threw it the type of picture throwing a pitch in Fergie wasn't going out with him - into the gap hit in the air to right field he mentioned to miss the pitch outside there Mickey Hatcher will make the catch and the runner retreats the first now that time they did call did Fergie for a pitch shot and bound in Zulueta threw a strike they've got to get their signals straight here well he's appearing in his ninth game Allen it happens many times when you you get a new guy in the ball club and you go over the signs with him watch this when I watch Ferguson jump out this is a pitch out watch where the ball ends up hittable [Applause] that's a tough on a catcher it really is you're looking for that ball outside the runner was going the pitch is low and inside it really gets it gets by everybody Joe Morgan Owen 1 the count the old pits outside our used to hold a fist that's the easiest that's the easiest thing to see you start going with with different finger signs for a pitch out three of the same thing three twos three ones whatever it confuses guys sometimes we stick the old fist down there so that's it I got it keep it simple oh and 1 the count two down pulled it first and Morgan takes high the caves of City season is over Royals of course in the playoffs against the Yanks George Brett has ended the year hitting 390 and Reggie Jackson has ended the season hitting an even 300 go to first they've got him picked off the throw down to second 9 time they had them easily Terry Puhl got caught leaning the other way and Garvey's throw down at Thomas was too late to nail him and two rather leisurely throw that time by Garvey al they had him dead to rights Garvey took that throw watch the backhanded play by Garvey and watch where his throw comes from you're looking at the runner all fool can do is set sail for a second he did there's the high throw pulled down by Thomas and pulls him so one and one on Moore again and the Astros trying to pick up another run that's a screwsie for striking accountant [Applause] Morgan all for three today [Applause] [Applause] popped up right-center Lopes going out after a long way to go here comes Guerrero and his Pedro making the catch that one became a tad dramatic in the seventh no runs no hits leave one through six and a half still Astros three Dodgers one Tommy Lasorda again starting to run out of time but he was running out of time on Friday and they came through Garvey gave him a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning yesterday and they held on for the victory and now the Dodgers with nine more outs remaining as we go to the bottom of the seventh inning again the situation an astral win and they are in they clinched the West go to Philadelphia Game one Tuesday night the Dodgers win we have one game to decide the National League Western Division championship it would take place here tomorrow we would have it for you on ABC at 4:00 Eastern in one Pacific here is Pedro Guerrero Guerrero Ferguson and Tomas facing joe sambito sit down the four men he has faced and gotten five outs out of the floor to face the pinch hitter catcher in the fifth inning and got Nikki to hit into a double play and 52,000 plus strong here today I'll trying to rally the divers here in the seventh-inning the divers containing almost to a man that the crown had a tremendous respect on them Friday night as Doug Harvey comes back behind the plate crowd responding in the night and say answering their prayers and then Ferguson hit out of the tenth inning bottom of the seventh Santino's first pitch just strike on the outside corner Ottawa can any player al it tells you the crowd doesn't juice them up when you're playing at home especially a packed house crowd it really does get your adrenaline going outside of the count is one and one that's part of them here at Dodger Stadium jammed up those will be watching Philadelphia Montreal welcome to Dodger Stadium joe sambito working on Guerrero in the 1-1 moved and off the glove of Landis for a basehead so Guerrero with a leadoff single here in the seventh inning LAN destroy in at second base in place of Joe Morgan who made the last out in the top of the inning here it is one more time high breaking ball from sambito in the land destroyed just kidding has gone on the walk but he can't hold it and the Dodgers have the leadoff batter on again Houston is leading 3-1 in the final the seventh inning Joe Ferguson goes with two runs in the second inning and in one of the four Dodgers got a run in the fifth in San Vito key mine to work out of a coup one out jam [Applause] crowd deels one all in Fricke swings and misses one and one burn rule is the starting pitcher for Houston rule had cut his finger the other day need a few stitches the stitches broke apart he can third the Dodgers the second in it now it's an Vito again [Applause] we get to the pitchers spot the Tigers have seen how in the bullpen okay the sorta comes up with [Applause] now responding to every twitch the animal over there the wonder Allen situations like this with sambito big game biggest game ever for him going to Fluit class good fastball good fastball off the outside corner on Ferguson that time [Applause] we got a big strikeout to Garvey 3-2 in the sixth when he threw that breaking ball for his only strikeout the big double play ball off going one pitch down to the fifth and the Dodgers fifth [Applause] so almost did not get back [Applause] there it is again pickoff attempt almost just getting back in time the tag by how up around the elbow a bit late there was some moments momentary suspension as he just started to make his move back to the bag see what where's he going to go Guerrero taking maybe a two-step lead they should be off now that far at the previous attempt at the one before were they almost picked him off the top place to go pulling three to one and I was that'll do to pitch is outside [Applause] started fine they are standing now whilst this one all on their feet Ferguson is lying the rest field cruises clean the warning track the runners at first [Applause] upstair the high fastball down there you saw todo stuff around the playing very very deep [Applause] to grab it on one of our nobody out Guerrero [Applause] he momentarily sees the ball dropping he's on [Applause] but wisely holding [Music] [Applause] butthat Furguson has his palm extended say no are you gonna pitch one for me Lasorda says no he's the tying run Thomas at the plate the Darrell the bun he swears and he takes low for a ball one and oh the cow Milberg last pitch the Thomas burden said I thought it was talking about a strike Guerrero at second in Ferguson at fresh Thomas lays one down foul one ball and one strike on Darryl a lot of things going through a Lasorda's mind right now Burgie thought and we're going to put in a pinch run of itami obviously as other ideas he'd go to routine law as a possible fit runner Gary Weis and rookies but apparently at Tommy's behind he sees [Applause] the tunnel one to Thomas the Bell has to field it and go to first to the out the sacrifice works right down the line the Bell could not afford the gamble to hope that it would roll it goes 5 4 runners at 2nd and 3rd simply by Thomas's he takes a high-five from ropes here is one more time now break down the line on the pickup not taking a chance and get the out at first the tying runs are on can't load him up they made the play on Thomas and Mel right coach heading after the mound also manny mota will come up as the pinch-hitter for Valenzuela right going to the mound with runners at second and third and one out here in the bottom of the seventh inning manny mota retired them to the 1979 season became the diamonds first base goes and reactivated when we went into September the lowest proficient pinch-hitter in big-league history with a hundred forty nine career pitches two for six this season including a game-winning single in the game against the Giants two weeks ago [Applause] afford to play back they can give up the run they leave [Applause] shorter seconder [Applause] really a scene here al he died your fans standing many thousand back oh and one the cow [Applause] motor aim of this magnitude Tommy Lasorda forty-two years baby no one pitch to motive three runs five hits and nowhere is really asked one run Angus one error for the Dodgers with a confrontational Ray's pitcher in baseball 42 years old against the youngster sambito hit foul and he's hitting for a 19 year-old pitcher [Applause] Youth will be served since when that's right Guerrero is third Ferguson a second one ball two strikes you talk about the heat on the hitter you talk about the heat on the pitcher how about some heat on Doug Harvey [Applause] Jill Morgan who left the game Rafael language Mona [Applause] the flow is back foot off and motors [Applause] shut up so the going great going to the the second vision I just can't believe that how didn't cut that throw off ala was right on target perfectly over the cutoff man's head here it is one more time now line drive base hit by mode on a fastball from sambito now watch the throw cool and right-field watch the throw there's how he's got to cut it off Mona going all the way to second and Ferguson holding at third now the Dodgers will send a pinch runner for Ferguson there's Lasorda the reaction of Tommy Lasorda on the base hit by Manny Mota [Applause] well you talk about dramatics bill burden at the mound the pitching change is being mean I believe it's Franklin party coming on to pitch both he and Dave Smith in the bullpen [Applause] relief done as a hitter so he goes back to [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the first base coaching box 4250 authority to pitch in I can't imagine any of begetting necessarily bigger than this one again al there's the the relay the throw not cut off by Howe and Ferguson at third Ferguson went back to the Dodger dugout there was a Dodger runner at third but Ferguson has been sent back out there's only one out runners at second third there's a pitch to promote at second well you got a Wonder al when Ferguson with that first base asking for the pinch runner there's Sam Vito leaving because a girl maybe would have scored though the throw was perfect and how thinking that Ferguson would have scored as he talks thing is over with Daniel's Arkin dirt you also I think witnessed the site and may have been approved in Major League history a picture comes out of the game and has a conversation with the first base those who just got to hit to knock him out of the game sambito left the back hundreds almost as if to say to Manny I don't believe 40 to retire already would you Davey Lopes will be coming up with the tying run at third go-ahead run at second Franklin Gordy in the pitch here in the seventh inning the Dodgers rapid foot behind again used to none time three to two red Adams find John early [Applause] a long weekend for bill bird so far very [Applause] Joe Ferguson has come out as they go to the pinch runner Rudy law there he is so law is running at third and Gary Weis is the pinch runner at second for Manny Mota there's Weiss he pulled up at the rosters were expanded he woke Savannah [Applause] a third jealous Reynolds back at Short Landis back at second powers up the first elope he's one for toothbrush a walk [Applause] looks he's a thousand a third the bill looks law back he almost wrapped him off and gets the out loss started to break in and it had a dark back the third Esquibel throws out Lopes to down boy and lecornu got away with a high breaking ball that time al up around the letters Lopes headed right at Cobell looked law back to third then got Lopes one more time watch this high breaking ball there it is almost up around the letters but Lopes had it right at Cobell looks the runner back to third and throws out Lopes what a series Mickey Hatcher is due up they brought Hatcher in when they made the switch before to face the left-hander now Nicky a right-handed batter has not emerged I would imagine maybe John Stoll would be and it will be gay there is Jay Johnstone coming up the hidden we're making back Monday in the mid Minich [Applause] [Music] that's a beautiful series out it really is it's been great I like this stuff I just you know you look around the stadium Alan almost per fan here standing and the dramatic pinch hit by Manny Mota just get your adrenaline going I don't care Houston Dodger fan whatever an incredible weekend a reminder World News Tonight with Sam Donaldson will be seen me to be following this game except on the west coast Jay Johnstone is the batter runners at second and third a 2 down 3 to s throws in the 7th inning Frank liqueur tea to the plate low want to know one open in there one and one Franklin Cordy had some early promise as a Braves but several years in the Atlanta system never really developed he's really come on though this season he's put it all together for the a troll but joe sambito Angela and the lead run Weiss at second but liqueur tea there's Bill Virdon Houston still lead street to but 40 and sambito both powertech pitches now excellent fastball every Dusty Baker is on deck there he is load [Applause] wife into second and applause third and Dusty Baker man who's at his best okay a lot of people think should [Applause] but maybe the league's MVP though Mike Schmidt should have a lock on that I would think take her up in the seventh she's loaded strike one [Applause] laughter missing the John stow the hard stuff Valley came right back to the breaking ball there's the runner at third the tying run Weiss at second popped up in foul ground Ashby's coming all the way back fighting has it so the Cordy comes out of the pen to do the job and in the inning the Dodgers are run 3 hitch those of you watching Philadelphia Montreal back to electric stadium we go to the top of the 8th inning the Astros leading the Dodgers 3-2 to Houston trying to wrap it up at the National League West the Dodgers trying to finish a scheduled three-game series with a victory to force a divisional playoff tomorrow there's your new pitcher Steve Howe fourth Dodger pitcher of the day the rookie coming in here new battery there is Steve Yeager he takes over for Joe Ferguson Yeager is batting in the seventh spot Jay Johnstone who hit for Mickey Hatcher stays in the game that second plays right jose cruz saves our Cedeno and aren't out in the eighth inning four five and six hitters Cruz is all for three bow back one one account [Applause] when you talk about the youngsters here's another one Steve how done such an outstanding job for the Dodgers this year see maybe a little bit tired now he's really worked a lot up near the plate Jager is there now you've watched this Dodger Club for so many years I don't know it seems at every spring they would come up with some hard throwing pitcher or a new switch hitter every spring it seen some new guy joined the ball club through bb's or could switch him Steve Howe another one Dodgers have been noted for among other things for their farm system the way they develop their players it's not by accident either scientific method and it's a method that has been emulated by a lot of clubs Cesar Cedeno one for three on one account is Johnstone Jay right field [Applause] what out bases empty the Astros trying to fold on they got two in the second one in the fourth the doctors with single runs in the fifth and seventh the old one-two Cedeno is fouled away they say none of the shoes I was gonna say al if they say how is tired he doesn't appear to be very tired good fastball how's next no relation we're missing his Gordie don't say miss and he maybe if Florida is why not tortilla Oh into the count on Cedeno one out bases empty the center-field guerrero got a late start here he comes in the drops and John Stoll picks it up and gets it back in so again this has been the case in the date games here Guerrero coming in coming in not quite sure how far and as it turned out John still wound up closer to the ball though it was not Jays play may have been a tough play for Guerrero anyway after the long run but he broke back as al said again we welcome those of you watching the buildings in the expose eighth-inning now with one out sedan yo at first base my pal is the batter now as sacrifice he reached on an error on that play grounded out flied out oppa too Daniel goes and it's fouled away so they go hit the run to the counties or one filbert burden has managed a divisional winner before he was with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1972 and in that playoff series he had the lead in the 15 going into the ninth inning 3 to 2 and that was a series in which Johnny Bench hit the home run of the 9th inning to tie it and the late Bob moose threw a wild pitch to enable the then young and unproven George Foster to score from third with the run that gave the wrench the pennant the old one delivery is fouled away in the counties oh and to a little upset at him South Valley and a good pitch to hit that time fastball upstairs the drive to right field he fouled it back Cedeno not running that time all the action in this game has turned toward the Dodgers al it was all Houston in the early innings bunting stealing bases last couple of innings the Dodgers Oh to pitch coming up location that time gets one on the inner half of the plate that ago L if he's looking outside watch team house fastball Yeager's got the target inside quarter and he's got it says Doug Harvey big out big strike up so two down in Alan Ashby - beat the base hit in the second to drive in a run the base hit in the fourth inning and it's scored what right now is the run that's the difference in this game and struck out 2 for 3 I guess it's still tipping [Applause] these are was moving back places are we retreating on one Dodger outfield swung around toward the right side for Ashby elegance now they don't hurt him to pull that ball Dusty Baker well off the line in left field he's way off the line Guerrero shades toward right-center and the right fielder Johnstone only about 40 feet off the line to give Ashby anything off speed to pull there goes today no good jump of the ball is hit in the air to center field we think it should be routine for Guerrero but nothing is easy however he does make the catch from the eighth inning for the Astros no runs one hit leaves Sudan you in first through seven and a half his Guerrero that's an entirely it's three to Houston Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles Al Michaels and Bob Uecker win here the final day of the regular season maybe if the Dodgers win we'll go at it again tomorrow in a single game divisional playoff which will be on the air at 4 o'clock Eastern 1 o'clock Pacific time right now the Dodgers need a run to tie as Steve Garvey gets that the lead things off first baseman for the Astros is Dave as we go to the [Music] [Applause] are we getting set to face his way up Shane [Applause] Steve Garvey three hits yesterday 1 for 3 today a punch single in the 2nd inning that was his 200th into the year Franklin Courtney ready to work want to know the cows one and one [Applause] two-in-one now on the Dodgers have nine hits today all single the Astros at six if one extra-base hit the double by fool [Applause] and like forty trying to reach back for little extra behind in the count down three and one organ Burton I would say sitting in the fastball rhadigan third Cobell I think a little hop and it gets away from him Salinas cabel's initially get Sherlock driving as a board they get familiar indecision bike this ball hit by Garvey took a step in Allen backed up he wanted to take it on the short hop then backed up with stepping that ball got that extra hop on him and it's going to be an error charged to Cobell tying run on for the Dodgers so Ron say is a banish say is old for three [Applause] the bag of three say gosh the putt and misses for a strike oh and one so the sort of trying to get the tying run to second on deck is Guerrero also keep in mind now that ideas have gone deep into their bench we've already seen low Jackson what [Applause] that's right war god why [Applause] all one Pizza Pizza nothing doing it's not a bad call because you want to kind of take a look at what the banner hasn't actually right al and I was just going to mention Cobell playing even with the bag at third [Applause] to plan Garvey at second and say bunts foul so the count is one and two that's the second high fastball he went after on a check swing but his first pitch that he got from according up around the letters it was a strike hits a high fastball upstairs again he piled it back back [Applause] stay with a book how many times you see it happen and go off and you the guy too big here's the one to to say wolf 2v2 little bit high will the breaking ball that time from according I'll say he's going to hit away 2 & 2 Dodgers trailing by [Applause] play [Applause] where's the antacid nuts yes well count on nobody happened bullpen quiet well according right now to the count go and saying it's a bouncer bought off his foot the count remains 3 & 2 and Ron already hobbled by a hamstring pole now has a foot to think about too now you remember back when that bunt was made by Thomas on the third base line that Cobell made the play on it was punted in between the chalk line and the grass which is only about a half a foot and Cobell made the play knowing that that wall would not roll foul that ball was hit by say the third base side of the infield and right side that ball comes back in toward the mound here it is again now safe fouls it off and watch this ball hug the inside it stays in fair territory almost hitting the bag to Cobell but foul when you see a ball travel that far after somebody fouls it off his foot a straight line [Applause] - Garvey was going close down Guerrero will be next Houston 3 the Dodgers 2 in the 8th inning laughs security beautiful really am [Applause] goes the 3-2 pitch is fouled straight back look out here it comes you he's got it Cooper makes the catch what a play Bob Uecker who couldn't catch him when they counted makes a grab here I'm so proud proud of you pal right here right there no problem you kidding me my guy had that baby wired I figured it out now you shouldn't use the club [Applause] he goes the pitch is popped foul back out of play one of those odd thousand you see a rain hand and hit or hit went off his left shoulder and behind it they really fought it off al Garvey heading back to the bag I looked over the railing here you know who Santa downstairs Rob Reider what are a good trick the first guy started ripping me right away well can I say the 3-2 pitch deep left centerfield that go Cedeno Ron say he bunts foul he has to swing away here it is one more time his owl said he was set up the bunt [Applause] sadena with a token look at the wall for three Los Angeles Wow say assistant is 28 places gone berserk the pictures I don't believe it I really don't [Applause] alum each time Guerrero popping it up Cobell in rentals of both fairness eNOS Cobell waiting and making the cash in there's one away for the night there at the bottom one fool hair stays over again here it is again 3-2 fastball upstairs and say got it all ripped now talked about it earlier set up the month and ends up with a big homerun [Applause] no bird thinking what does it take the old one picks you to swing intervention the cannons Ola to remember if there's a divisional playoff you'll see it tomorrow for Easter recess specifically pictures will be killed and dinkles what at second base in that Taffer hip 5 Baker that led to a run air by Cobell the bouncer hid by Garvey his perspective the place [Applause] Gerald Thomas coming up right going to the mound right visiting look bloody world news tonight Sunday was Sam Donaldson will be seen following the conclusion of this game except on the west coast and it will be seen at a later time on the coast in the bullpen Dave Smith [Applause] it'll be liqueur tea though right doesn't make the changes he's just out there to try to get Frank settle down which is no easy accomplishment under the circumstances Darryl Thomas is the plate Thomas - for two plus a sacrifice look out now wall they're almost stepping right into a breaking fish was a breaking ball upstairs at Taemin liccardi heading right down toward the home plate area Ali's upset at the home run given up by say but that pitch was high and tight but a breaking ball you said in LA it's been a great season series between these two teams the last six games have been decided by one run Tigers winning by one Friday by one yesterday leading by one today the old one-two thomas is high one in one account doing one now the Astro dugout say it they kept talking about you know we only have to win one out of four and the way things are going right now it may be one one out of one tell you I'll win lose or draw they've had an outstanding year we really have made of believers out of a lot of people in baseball I really have - until this would be a bitter one to swallow though if you know well it really would hear a lot of fans I think I'll fit the Dodgers to win this thing from get-go from day one but it's been the Houston Astros battling throughout the year cincinnati knocked out of it the Astros still in it and battling here today to stay alive they of course lead by a game ajussi Gerald Thomas going to some it's a pie entire substance in a can stick up what they call it Sheila was today this girl got a chance in the night not over yet do it to the count on Thomas oh it's great to play at home now for three Dodgers one out Jagr at first page liqueur tea feels to sue and Thomas fouls it away the Dodgers are trying to stay alive trying to force it to a one game divisional playoff of which there has never been a divisional playoff in nationally history since they went to the divisional setup in 69 if the Dodgers hold on and win one game means it all tomorrow in the West is Thomas fouls it away we would be on the air tomorrow at 4 o'clock Eastern Time again the pitchers will be Joe Niekro and Dave goltz championship series getting underway in Tuesday's Philadelphia will be home hosting either the Dodgers or the Astros Kansas City in New York of course what he said in the American League the League Championship Series commencing there on Wednesday in Casey Thomas swings and misses so Darryl goes down on strikes and there are two gone now in the eighth inning Steve Powell will hit for himself there's the graphic tomorrow the Dodgers are certainly hopeful of that one and the Astros they'd rather be on a plane to Philadelphia [Applause] Steve how hitting for himself here Scylla sorta he wants now to pitch the ninth inning when again the Astros have Reynolds do up first in the pitcher spot and then Terry Puhl a strike Owen 1 the count Jay Johnstone for grants I'm gonna sorta back there with money basball [Applause] breaking ball over in the count on now is over to [Applause] since that seventh inning al when the Dodgers sent manny mota up to pinch-hit he delivered the run-scoring single it's been bedlam here in Los Angeles one ball and two strikes again actually got out of a jam in the seventh the Dodgers have the lead runs on after the base hit by motive but worked out of it took the 3-2 lead into the 8th that's gone Yeager is first and how it's a bouncing ball to short Reynolds goes to Lane destroyed for the forest and the 8th inning is over but the Dodgers come up with 2 after the error saying hits a home run and at the end of leading to play Los Angeles leading Houston for three back after this today's hero there he is he was Friday nights semi hero along with Joe Ferguson yesterday Garvey and Roy stole the show today it's been miss to say to run homer in the 8th Dodgers leading for three changes for the Dodgers before we get to that here's another look at stays home run 3-2 fastball from liqueur tea upstairs say looking and he got it all that's this place in the bedlam Cedeno gave a token look then headed again for the wall but that ball well out of here make it 4-3 for the Dodgers [Applause] it will be Pepi free is taking over at shortstop and they move Darryl Thomas there's Frias they move Thomas not to centerfield to get Guerrero out of their fingers in a long series Darrell his best and here is Jeff Leonard pinch-hitting for rental Gary woods is out on deck he will pinch-hit for the 40 and then Poole is due up third in the inning so 22 year-old Steve Howe one of the prime candidates for Rookie of the Year and the nationally trying to lock it up here in the ninth-inning is Leonard a former Tigers language in this Leonard came up through the Dodger system traded to Houston had a great year in 79 and a bad year in 80 put me out field last year al you remember the incident that puts the Dania at first base that's what puts the Dania at first base made him very unhappy last year in a matter of fact he went on to say that he would not play in the infield in 1980 wanted to get back in centerfield as you look at Tommy Lasorda and Leonard now on as a pinch-hitter [Applause] Dodger dugout 4 2 3 ninth-inning manny mota we put the charge in the Dodgers in the seventh for the runs bring Finch single get in the air and curling foul jonstone going over all the way over if you make the catch the winning side this whole thing is because realistic what's going on fantastical one more time in the air to right-field Johnstone never giving up he hits the railing and hangs on balls are rolling thus each one of this in he goes but he's got it here's the shortage this Wow Oh red animal in routine one more time look at this somebody get into the ballpark one away Gary woods the pinch hitter would since it to right-center field Johnstone racing in times but can't come up again with a great catch Woods is on his way to second stumbles head back the first Prius made a sweep tag etouffee themand woods gets back to the bag so Jay Johnstone trying to come up roses again and would was tracked halfway between first and second and stumbled and had to retreat quickly long run by Johnstone here's the diving try if the ball gets by him at least a triple for woods he knocked it down woods had ideas of going to second and Johnstone retrieving very quickly helped times and doubles one out of the night for three Los Angeles cool broken back slow founder to davey lopes go in a second in time there so they keep the tying run at his foreign position great play by low [Applause] he's got his first face they took the changes to pool with two down at first base and eNOS Cobell coming up slowly hit ground ball in his house set a good play by Lopes going to free us at second they get the ports on the lead runner woods and Poole is on the tying run at first two men out Lopes we talked earlier about Jill Morgan the study man on the Houston infield airs Davy Lopes with a couple of words for left-handers he vows to man out ninth-inning Dodgers 1 oughta wave winding it all up tomorrow afternoon and we'll have it for you I struck out three times flied to right made a big error in the eighth inning on the ball hit by Garvey attached to its own here first down [Applause] on the other side it might be a different story with the homerun bats Aires was sort of one out away saves to run over put them in the lead but the Astros with Cavell now it was only homered twice this year really in a damn kill Verdun the old one pitch lying to left-center field Baker racing over has to play it on a hop pool on his way to third and he's in there as Cabela's aboard to keep things going like yesterday forever third two down Dodgers lead by one here we go again Landis toy is new up remember Morgan came out of the game and Raphael took over when Houston had to leave land estoy hitting in the three spot coming up for the first time here's the soar to go into the mouth Dodger bullpen that's Don Sutton throwing down there who was a starting pitcher on Friday night of course everybody is in your bullpen right now Sutton throwing in the pan and Lasorda I have to confer the mouth began the Dodgers try to force a one-game divisional playoff they won an away from doing that tomorrow Houston if they can come from behind they go right to Philadelphia to begin the National League Championship Series on Tuesday Landis toy and the sword has got to know this now he's going to go to the pan he's hitting 292 against left-handers only 201 against right-handers be subtle it yes it is died sorry sir what a series great series fans really here's the starting pitcher on Friday night Don Sutton went seven innings on Friday it's very well kept the Dodgers in the game [Applause] think about it and here comes Don Sutton will finish the season as the Dodgers earned run average leader and the lead CRA leader on to get one out because of the length of today's game World News Tonight Sunday will not be same except on the west coast and we'll be seen at a later time on the coast what a ball game in Los Angeles for three the Dodgers on top the Astros have been tying and go-ahead runs on face gone stuck in the pitch the Florida how come Sutton making his first relief appearance of the year [Applause] he's made only one relief appearance in the last four years and he's coming up to face land estoy or maybe a pensioner it's going to be Denny walling who now comes out of the Astro dugout and his swinging a bat in the on-deck circle Denny walling left-handed batter we'll hit for lambda store as we said in the diary putting the astros weren't finished yet trailing by one tying run at third now said the lead run at first two men out such an outstanding series 3-2 in the opener two to one yesterday one-run game today not over yet and Don Sutton for the first time this year out of the Dodger bullpen the Astros got two runs in the second and one in the third they left three nothing's as we went to the bottom of the fifth and a davey lopes drove on a run to make it 3 2 1 the Dodgers got another run in the seventh inning manny mota drove that one in with a single to right to make it 3-2 and then after Cobell made an error on a grounder by Garvey Ron State followed with a home run in the eighth to make it 4-3 so now in the ninth inning [Applause] the Bellas occurs at Terry cool-cool first and inning actively walling [Applause] [Music] two out with a breaking ball defender breaking balls in baseball said work eight innings on Friday I'm sure if sudden couldn't pitch today Alec the sort has said go to the pen so look I can't make it I'm tired step through too much Friday night he's obviously ready and wants to be a part of it we talked earlier everybody's a part of it now you got to be the strike 1 pitch bashing ball right side looks can vision in we'll see you tomorrow the Los Angeles Dodgers have swept Suri's that the schedule maker said would close out the 1980 divisional race but there's one more game to go as the Dodgers down by three on Friday night a home run by Ferguson Garvey's all run the difference yesterday sees over on the difference today they sleep the three-game series the divisional playoff tomorrow did it Western Division champion Ron say just going adding a picture and down into the clubhouse so at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles he's run it by a score of 4-3 after this word from our local station in Los Angeles we're 50 2339 have just witnessed another come-from-behind win by LA there's the line score with the totals the Dodgers trying to make their way to Philadelphia the Astros had a chance of course to go to Philadelphia open up the National League playoffs on Tuesday they came to the ballpark very optimistically today youth they had the bags packed the luggage was going to be sent to the airport it'll be one more night in LA and tomorrow it'll be interesting but tomorrow keep in mind if Houston I think has one advantage on paper they go with Joe Niekro Joe Nico's won 19 games this year the Dodgers go in and in and out Dave gold right it's been tough although Golson pitched well Ahlers last three or four times out he's pitched very well Negro I think we should point out we talked about this at the top of the telecast is working with three days rest tomorrow but again he's not the kind of a pitcher that would be bothered that much by three days rest because he throws a lot of knuckleball but I tell you I I just I can't remember a more dramatic series al and all my years in baseball it's been fantastic here the the crowds at Dodger Stadium that come-from-behind victory and again let me say fans a lot of credit to this Houston Astros ballclub they haven't quit they had the tying and the winning run on in the ninth inning before Sutton finally came on to stop him they're normally so laid-back and so reserved in Los Angeles and it's among the quieter ballparks comparatively speaking but it's been anything but through the three games you had as they say today he had ninth-inning emotion back in the third inning and things look quite desperate for the Dodgers today when they trail three nothing Burt Hooton had to come out in the second inning they got a great job out of their bullpen and of course what made the difference was the home run by Ron Cey as they bought strapped from behind and say winds up hitting a two-run homer in the eighth inning so Ferguson with a home run on Friday night and Garvey with a home run in the fourth inning yesterday that stood up and the home run by Ronnie say today the ironic things they sent up to but Alice you talk to when he was at the plate hitting he missed the first two attempts in a bunt then took a 3-2 pitch and put the Dodgers on top and they win it a big big ballgame and it all boils down tomorrow folks will be with you too Ron Cey the hero today take a look at that home run by say one more time here it is folks 3-2 fastball from Frank look 40 upstairs and say nailed him you'll see Cesar Cedeno in the center give a token look now thinking he may have a chance set sail again but it's gone and the Dodgers win it by a score of 4-2 three romantics that's good enough for another look the Dodgers have taken the first three and we'll be with you again tomorrow afternoon as you look from a different angle at Ron sage 28 home run of the year to win it 4-3
