good play two men are here is Thurman Munson in 302 this year 17 home runs 105 runs batted in and a great championship series 10 for 23 or for 35 everything he runs Thurman Munson one of a couple players on a Yankee ballclub and he feels most valuable player there's what Casey Stengel used to call a 55 foot curveball Tony yogi to swing it those time until to strength no key said I want a bad ball hitter the bad ball swinger ball two strikes on Thurman Munson there is Yogi Coates with Billy Martin Yankee teammate one two pitch listen Olli umpire Joe Harry will do the Yankees we're gonna win it this your back in spring training where they hired yogi said his luck there in Luke Pinellas a joke I don't care where you go I'm going with 2 2 pitch low ball 3 he is throwing hard reason I say that not only just see it but Johnny Bench has one of those loose fitting gloves it just doesn't pop when you throw that fastball but gullet is so fast that it really does pop look at that Club you catch it in a weapon it's like using a pair of pliers that may have been left out in the rain and got rusty it's just a pop [Applause] [Music] do it here's the man who usually starts it off farm Petros 3:23 this year takes a fastball outside ball one ten home runs 65 runs better than he was 6 for 14 in the championship series for 29 average strike one ball one strike nobody on nobody out bottom of the first no score two balls in the strike zone Marty Mickey rivers in centerfield for the Yankees is playing very shallow we did the same thing against the Kansas City Royals they do not have as much power as that steady he could get burned a lot of times up the alleys and over his head three balls and one strike he is shallow at that great speed he can outrun the ball Doyle Alexander high flyball left centerfield Roy white taken charge rivers moving over and our rivers takes it roses out flat ball to Mickey rivers and it brings up Ken Griffey hippy get three 36 six home runs 74 runs batted in stole 34 bases 45 attempts 5 for 13 in the championship series I tell you all these averages on both these ball clubs very high in a championship series strike one and certainly I know you join me in congratulating the Kansas City ballclub and those Phillies Kansas City especially bottom of the ninth and dramatic home run to lose it ready pot SEC was right guessing the baseball world is still talking about it huh ball some strikes roofie but a whole lot party during the season not a whole lot Tony he did maybe the last couple of weeks of the season when he was out in front of the batting race when he passed Billy Matlock and especially on her last road trip for the West Coast he punted a couple of times but more often than not grippy will put on natural turf rather than the artificial surface yeah a lot of good field hits though didn't he had a total of 39 during the season your fee up there with the commas two strikes Griffey finished second of Madlock 336 Medlock be 39 9 5 left field whites there and he played perfectly 12 into down and here is Joe Morgan that is not the way Boyle Alexander where us to keep this picture that was a high changeup he pitched high two rows he's going to get hurt unless he gets the ball down Markin if 320 27 home runs a hundred and eleven runs batted in stole sixty bases in 69 attempts he didn't get a hit in the championship series but he walked six times this guy can help you just dealing the cards on the plane one ball one strike Doyle Alexander Morgan has such a small strike zone he controls it so well two balls one strike Cecil Upshaw pitcher had a great description he said even if you throw a low strike his eyeballs are still not too far from the ball he's right don't see many guys with this kind of power obviously he's almost a strict ball hitter some left-handers will go the opposite way getting the speed back well lately tells me he's been having a little difficulty at the plate took some extra hitting practice [Applause] that's his third World Series home run job market looks like a low sinking fastball that is Doyle Alexander strength to pitch slow but the Cincinnati ballclub is a low fastball hitting club unusual most clubs are basically a high fastball hitting close let's fall outside to Tony Perez Joe Morgan was a boxer you'd have to say was just a short knockout punch it's just very compact swing that he fakes fell out of power two balls no strikes on Tony Perez the 260 in the regular season 19 home runs 91 runs better than that's his big strength RBIs good fastball two balls in the strike the yardstick of the RBI man is can he drive a man em from first base they say Perez can drive him in from the clubhouse hey in one big employee well the man good since applying for this time base he becomes a different kind of hitter I think you baby just as a little bit more looks for certain pitches he bears down with down [Applause] good point as you saw Mickey rivers throat come in from centerfield it was short left center he pops the ball very weakly an off target and you better believe the Reggie to take advantage of those Yankee throwing arm sometime during this series here is Dan Driessen and for the first time a designated hitter in a National League lineup Tony Perez is not a base stealing threat oh-ho he stole 10 out of 15 a good percentage all one Chambliss is playing behind Perez if he gets too far behind he ain't gonna be there Marty [Applause] there he goes here's his family that ends the inning but the Cincinnati Reds take the lead on the market home run and watch this growing bag they're checking out Munson zombie - a lot better the last two games against the Kansas City Royals but even now you saw the ball pale away for a great feel good tag by Stan Lee so the score at the end of one Cincinnati one Yankees nothing it doesn't take much for Billy to get upset he started fighting an empty elevator I got a blip he may just be trying to stir something up that's typical Billy Martin George - George Steinbrenner hired him because he do is a back alley fighter a scrapper police tighten the strings off that way here is Lou Piniella count-o Paul to Piniella the designated hitter he hit 281 on the year three home runs 38 runs batted in he was 3 for 11 in the championship series since the nanny out in front wonder nothing a homerun by Joe Morgan Don Gullett the Yankees think they can score a lot of runs not necessarily I'll put off the second line pinchers they think that's the vulnerable spot of the Cincinnati Reds and they think an artificial surface it'll be even a better hitting ballclub line drive down the right-field line so fair ball should be extra bases for Piniella heading for second he'll hold on with a double he hit that ball right where was fish [Applause] gullible throw two different kinds of fast balls one across the seam that rides or takes off one with a sieve that will sink that appeared to be that sinking fastball one that tails away from a right-handed hitter irrelevant with it well here's the man of the hour Chris Chambliss what a year he had he's are one of the couple Yankees I mentioned but be the most valuable player in the American League in 293 17 home runs 96 runs batted in his left hand pitcher doesn't bother this fella he hangs tough I thought tech thinks he's the best hitter on the club interesting statement he made on your baseball world show before the game one ball one strike there you see a young fish Chambliss with his bride the wedding cake probably the only famous life it was a happier wandered the other night when he hit the home run he will not bail out against left-handed pitchers as both Greg nettles as pellet comes over the top pretty much hot shot Morgan has it Chambliss is out Piniella takes third campus gets the job done now if he were a right-handed batter Tony somebody would say he's managing material he knows how to play in here he knows what to do with the faculties up for I know that here is Greg Nettles Sparky's gonna bring his infield halfway it's early in the ballgame nettles can drive the ball and fielders will have to make a decision if they can get the runner hold plate first Piniella does not run well nettles led the American League in home runs with 32 [Applause] what thinking if anything's wrong with are certainly just fellow holdouts there's Piniella Marty does bench throw a lot the second base third base pickoff situations not a whole lot Tony they of course have a pre-arranged signed with as the case was here with Petros that he's gonna go that way but you don't see it happen very often one o pitch a good replay of Piniella getting back the last time coming back to the bag wrong he came in foul territory he should be in fair territory where that throw might hit him in the back and black roses view he's got a gazelle out there obviously managers always tell you to go back to fair territory blocked of you'll only get a concussion we're still seated in an air-conditioned dugout with patty 1-1 pitch high two balls in one strike Cincinnati leading one to nothing a home run by Joe Morgan nettles drove in 93 runs this is a fastball clean one the boys you're gonna look at some real purple shooters in this game today that whole Cincinnati ballclub and here's the guy likes to take a shot at their three one two oh three nothing pitch I'd say the two baths this guy had to fight for the Yankees nettles and Perez for Cincinnati centerfield it's gonna be deep enough way back from the warning track to run them all thanks to catch and here comes Penelope are all tied up sacrifice fly or break nettles Marty that ball treated well the death center field how does a ball carry this part well I'm right there Tony very surprising because basically in this ballpark if you're a pull hitter whether you'll be left-handed or right-handed you could have a fine year because it's a veritable jet stream down both foul lines but when you got maybe 20 or 30 feet on from each line you've got to hit the ball a ton and that ball as you said did carry extremely well one apiece here is Elliott Maddox strike went around Lee Weyer they play Maddux a shape towards right-center field here's a shot of the defense Geronimo over right-center bouncing ball rolls comes in fast gets him Maddox is out at first the bottom of the second New York one Cincinnati one ain't too bad when we play pretty good he enjoys it here's Dan Driessen pretty stork right here threesome the first kind of nasty lick uniform being the designated hitter role there is joy Steinbrenner principal owner of the New York Yankees Gate Paul's seat next to him but he was up to check us out that ball is well hit right field Rivers is going back gonna have room makes the play you know what I like about Sparky Marty and Tony it doesn't make any bones about the World Series a center stage I got an ego I love it I don't think it was that never more evident than it was last year in Boston Joe he he loves people he loves to talk and I think when you make a comparison between Sparky and Casey's think that you're making the ultimate comparison I'll tell you we've missed good old case George Foster Oster 121 runs better than led the league at 306 with 29 home runs he can do more things to irritate other hitters in any fighting the League of leave Marty I think we'll probably see it here sometime during the course of this game maybe at this if at Joe he's constantly in and out of the batter's box as you see him here and it tends to as you say upset the pitches Doyle Alexander with the count of two balls and no strikes three though there it goes and he's Cincinnati Reds would give me a free life you know well you can tell a load of Cincinnati bats before they come to the park to moving into crates they're anxious to hit [Music] there's the strike three balls are one strike we're all tied up in the bottom of the second Yankees one Reds one there's Commissioner Kuhn talking to Gabe Paul and the blue suit [Applause] the Commissioner gave Paul tow Feeney the far right nationally President Warren child Bob Howard be seeing bill salted Gillette so there's some kind of a complaint being registered as false across the face on Paul's and here is Johnny Bench 58 double play Randolph won over the first is one for three that ends the inning and as we complete two innings it's the yankees won cincinnati one now all tied at one apiece hot smash concepción hazard easy out [Applause] seems like Venezuela has a market on great shortstops back from Chico carrots kale with a white socks then Luis Aparicio and now this guy David conceptual they do something right down there teaching those infielders let me set them from Warsaw huh they must here is Fred Stanley what a pleasant surprise he's been nice a fastball going inside Fred Stanley for the year hit 238 one home run in 20 runs batted in not a power hitter he lays the bat on the ball hits it to the opposite field that's where they got the defense set up there subscribe Geronimo is very short and in right-center field he'll not knock the ostomy but he'll sting you to death tremendous job in the field go 75 and 76 had some injury problems fractured thumb and 75 shoulder problems this year he is yet unsigned is that scientists Cincinnati contract there's a pretty good commercial of curve ball that's the third strikeout of the ball game for Cullen struck out rivers to start the game Munson and now Stanley here is Mickey rivers he can't wait to get his swings in Jenny he doesn't think anything this whole box of the Yankee club is a swingin ballclub the first pitch on they're going after you they play rivers as if he we're right hand better foster cards the line and left rows way in tight at third Morgan will have to hustle here's the troll hey buddy Morgan to Perez gets triggered the NZ top of the 30 but the bottom half to third all-time New York one Cincinnati one the states that Mickey rivers can run play halfway they didn't they got it slow curveball pop down along the third-base line and nettles makes the play at fall was thrown nice and soft and that's the way Geronimo hit it [Music] Dave concepción if to anyone for the year nine home runs 69 runs better than 2 for 10 in the championship series and he scored the deciding run tell you a lot about their hitting attack the Cincinnati balled up what they could send concepción up to bat ninth Geronimo I hate to write 307 Tony and concepción is getting to 81 mm takes a curveball outside ball one we're all tied one apiece from the bottom of the third trying to hit the outside corner misses with two balls and no strikes [Applause] there's no fastball over two balls in one strike one man out nobody on Pete Rosie on deck batter [Applause] [Applause] the box with a walkie-talkie who fifty rivers father for right-center field see they're all they took advantage of the arms randolph actually the second baseman went to left-center field for the cut off his arm is stronger than Stanley's so it's a three base hit for Maeve concepción all-time one apiece bottom of the third here's Pete Rose who tried to center field his first time up until halfway up for the Yankees [Applause] look at bull look at sugar Yankees like to try that play with the right-hand batter they say the scouting reports party that you've seen that on this particular plane Devils will actually get found on his knees step times in front of the bag and try to block the runner from getting back that's right Tony and our scouting report says the Yankees have pulled that play to pick a runner off of third successfully nine times during the season 1o pitch I fault watch controls question our last plague you hear batters hit the ball where it's pitched constant rows where it's pitched like a niche hero he throws it low be head tonight close and I really can't be very inaccurate [Applause] Cincinnati Finch they got a lot of life pride they call it like the wind want to win know how to win here is Griffey [Applause] hi curveball he really jumped on it [Applause] nettles the third face has moved in or two outs grip he tried to punt the last time up ended up lining hard to Roy white so I've been watching yogi down to the fence he's got a little responsibility he's the man who is moving the outfielders around apparently he's talking to chief Michaels who has the walkie-talkie there is somebody there's the walkie-talkie that's Michaels he is relaying something from guys up here where we are near where we are walls that walkie-talkies and defensive charts I think it's Jerry Walker a farmer pitcher Bobby Cox were up in the press box it's an idea of joy Steinbrenner put it to use there is Michael's behind yogi with the sheaf of papers and the walkie-talkie in his left hand Carl keel also involved upstairs former Montreal manager be funny 50 brought Rick Crawford on their two balls and two strikes man remember when William Hayes was to supply the baseball is Sam look when they hit it I catch it and they throw it I hit it now you got walkie-talkies defensive charts popped up nettles and Stanley nettles taking charge makes the play so that ends the inning but the Cincinnati Reds take the lead in Cincinnati two Yankees one take a replay of a conversation just held by Billy Martin a man the blue suit gave Paul and George Steinbrenner Billy had registered a complaint earlier about something and Gabe went over to talk to the commissioner we still do not have an official report will happen in a minute he's coming back and here's Marty fundamental Cincinnati Reds for the play-by-play thank you Joe and hello again everybody first pitch by Don Gullett to Roy white leading off this Yankee fourth inning is a fastball high white takes the strike a fastball at the letters that evens the count at 1-1 good defensive play on the part of Roy white or against white in the first didn't get a hot shot to the glove side of Pete Rose the ball bounced to concepción and Davie threw him out Don Gullett putting white in a hole with a count of one ball and two strikes on the foul back the Yankees have had one base hit that the leadoff double in the second by Lou Piniella he scored the New York run the rats are out in front by a score of two to one here the steadiest performers on this New York Yankee ballclub deli comes with a hard breaking ball and the count evens a two and two Marty white one of the few Yankees as we look at once the day on-deck circle but white one of the few guys who has a little patience at the plate he can work you for a base on balls Gullit comes low and for one of the few times today he's got a full child to a Yankee batter Cincinnati left-hander is struck out three in the first three innings has not yet walked a batter right now is as far as he can go with Roy white a count of three and 283 walks during the season for Roy white this one will be out of flight interesting the comparison that you can make between the rent and the Yankee Cincinnati received 212 more walks in 1976 then did the New York Yankees and I think one of the big factors there is the discipline at the plate of a guy like Joe Morgan consistently walks over a hundred times every year felon again with a payoff [Applause] why just hit the ball well he gotta fall inside and look up from Gullit almost directly happy pros Louis has good hands he doesn't cover a whole lot of ground but he does have good hands he is really a passer got great reflexes Tony the guy has done a super job for the Reds at third base there was a gamble last year people thought Sparky Anderson was crazy when he made the move early in the year but it's been the thing I guess more than anything else it's solidified this ballclub because it allowed George Foster to go to left field on an everyday basis Thurman Munson struck out swinging in the first inning talk to Sparky Anderson about the key to beating the New York Yankees and of course Mickey rivers his name probably comes up more than any other but you have to give a lot of credit to this man he's great with men on base he's had a super season and as Joe mentioned earlier as a good shot at the most valuable player award in the American League should be play by Griffey it always seems that the World Series time the shadows become a factor are they a factor in this ballpark there most definitely are a factor Joe I don't think so much in the OP feel is we will probably see later on in this game when the Sun starts to set behind the stadium you're going to have first the plate in shadows the mound and sunlight and especially it's difficult when you've got a hard thrower like Don Gullett pitcher there is a possessor of the only New York Yankee hit Piniella with a wrong field double or right fella throwing strikes as he has from the hasta give you an example of what they think of Piniella speed all you got to do is look at Dave concepción he is playing short left-field one ball and one strike Lou Piniella native of Tampa Florida and that of course is the spring training home for the Cincinnati Reds he's got a shot there of the depth in which David concepción is playing Lou Piniella bases empty with two men out here in the Yankee fourth inning it's 2 to 1 Cincinnati he's thrown hard he can get passed ball by fidella he's won wait wait he's pulled four that's mr. rat everyday visitor at Riverfront Stadium kalak trying for the one two three fourth inning Fenella just to get out in front on that you got a good shot at Riverfront Stadium Cincinnati of course leading the major leagues in attendance in 1976 two million six hundred twenty-nine thousand with his fourth best in all of Major League Baseball history it's the population in Cincinnati roughly in the corporate limits about a half a million people this whole town though everywhere you go banners I'm Reds hot in fact newspapers when you picked it up look like Cincinnati was gonna win in three it's it's just a contagious thing they're really behind their Reds you're aren't they well they like to think of this town as the baseball capital of the world Joe and it's a I think it's a big small town I think it's the best way to describe Cincinnati why to first Perez heatwaves Gullit off and I'm gullet as another one two three a we're here in Cincinnati 3 and a half innings have gone by in the first game of this World Series and with the Reds coming to Madison in Cincinnati as we move on to the Reds half of the fourth inning Joel Morgan who exploded one out of here to right field in the first inning off Doyle Alexander Morgan a picture of concentration at the plate Alexandra starting him off with an off-speed fits it slow for a ball the rents of course have faced us guys some five years ago when he was brought up by the LA Dodgers and in three appearances against insanity and one relief appearance the Reds hit him and hitting it will live innings 21 hits 11 earned runs two balls and a strike they give morgan's just about all of left field well they are playing him show more radically than the national league outfielder is played Doyle Alexander right where he was in the first and he was working when Joe played long ball as you got a look at the New York Yankee outfield fact the entire defense is over shifted to the right for the foul back Munson giving chase but will not have a play the count is full market a great fastball hitter he has a lot of confidence in his ability not to have anybody throw the ball by him he stands all the stuff in front of the plate at times daring you to throw the fastball by him the position that Alexander got him in in the 1st inning Joe of Tony a very precarious spot for Doyle Alexander Roy white there to play the fly ball of deep left-center field and there's one away Tony Perez is one for one a single to left center in the first inning and then Sparky Anderson testing Thurman Munson Turley at Perez going with Danny Driessen at the plate and it was an easy out at second base he is going with a lot of slow stuff slow curve that time he even pulled the string on Morgan on the three into town yeah I tell you I keep thinking of Bill leave doing that last year and Perez pull that left field wall in behind third base Perez in a big hole in two strikes to wrench leading the Yankees 2 to 1 in the bottom of the fourth inning that was a good shot of Munson who gives the target with the glove he just moved out let's see if he wastes this to set up 42 changeup with little fingers [Applause] [Music] Perez getting onto it right in this world interesting way of 50 and playing a defense right there Devils was way off the line at third base white was left centerfield they pulled the string daring them to pull the ball Tony a lot of times when that happened there's a shot of as he gets by nettles is that sometimes the pitcher will change on his own I know when I was with the karkos Kurowski always wanted to know when the change of pace was coming so he could card the line you can't play wearing a hole then throw a change of pace they'll pull it right down that line as the bullpen gets busy there is dick Tidrow so the ranch will lead by a run have Tony Perez at second base with one down in the designated hitter Danny Driessen up slow breaking ball is in for a strike Creason has had some experience as a designated hitter he led the Puerto Rican League in batting last winter and at times was used as a designated Hood [Music] no balls and two strikes Tony Perez at second base the Reds have now had four hits off Alexander [Applause] she pointed out Tony going with a lot of off-speed pitches to just about everybody in the Reds lineup they did his fastball maybe just different older guys recent levels of bad as Alexander checks Perez at second base [Applause] to us we pause briefly for station identification this is the NBC television network KGW TV channel only Portland a look at the crowd at Riverfront Stadium as Cincinnati now hopes for a two-out base hit from their left fielder George Foster well Alexander has been in the National League and he has pitched against the Cincinnati Reds has not done too well boss to the recipient of a second ending walk over the plate below for ball one now lift a plate right now as we look at Doyle Alexander the two guys who were voted their respective players of the year in the National League and American League by the Sporting News George Foster and Yankee catcher Thurman Munson two balls and no strikes you see that unique hand action on the part of George Foster it's almost impossible to duplicate you you have to see it and you immediately know what people are referring to you got to be the junior welterweight champion to keep doing that to find the fetcher who was it so you said in our meeting yesterday be tried that I guess Bob Gibson of what might happen it's real from what they actually would have intended is really to take about forty calories right out of the carbs I know some other guys late UK see spinning around like a yo-yo if you can't until it cannot intimidate foster Tony Perez is going to be out as rentals but right to the baseline to feel that the ball hit Perez foster gets a hit out of it and that's going to be in at the end of four complete innings of play Reds to the New York Yankees one Tony you're our resident expert tell us about it I'll tell you what with friends like you I'm just getting the Cincinnati fans to say hi to me again after last year first pitch hitting Chris Chambliss with a base hit to left field off Don Gullett that's the second New York kid in the game in Cincinnati two and New York one in the top of the fifth inning three Yankees were born in Ohio Chris Chambliss Thurman Munson and grant Jackson Chambliss born in Dayton the son of a navy chaplain go on at first base with the potential tying run is Chambliss and here's Greg nettles at a sacrifice fly to get in the New York run Morgan will go to second most underrated faith I believe of this entire Cincinnati ballclub defense the quickness of Morgan and watch Davey Concepcion make cameras get on down look at the agility of concepción they are so quick and here's Joel market starting it from the other side he takes a lot of pride fighting his defensive ability he's worked hard at it daddy does Tony and interesting the way he was playing Chris Chambliss really pulled over toward first base but still had plenty of time to get the ball to concepción and on for a double play Tony I gotta believe the best defensive infielder has is when he submarines that ball like concepción did because boy if you're a baserunner you got to get down before you see the whites of their eyes Elliott Maddox old for what a bouncing ball to third to retire the Yankees in the second inning [Applause] call it down and in to the right-handed batter across great Barty we talked about the Yankees using the electronic devices as far as setting their defense that's George Shorter's responsibility he has a chart down in the dugout and he lose the defense around for Sparky Anderson Lyde a lot of the information they got the raise your export what a great shot Queen City just outside the stadium here as a matter of fact the Ohio River now Rose pull well off the line from attics and that's going to be an extra-base hit the ball takes two carom coming off of that wall and foul ground Maddox is going to try for a triple [Applause] he had some trouble running you can see the injury at a knee operation he got the second face he was running out of gas almost had to pull into the pits for repairs but watch him run and you can pick up that limp there it is we talked about the sister that he's peeled off a lot but with Maddox white Randolph they also have good speed on the base pass Maddox taking a page out of the Pete Rose book but they had first slide tremendous tribute to this young fella here to work hard he was out all year and coming back inflating pressure ball games it's not just another ball game he played in only 18 games this year Willie Randolph who played against Cincinnati last year in postseason play but in a different uniform strike joy he was with a Pittsburgh Pirates and faced the rats while with that Club and last year's National League playoff one ball and one strike with two out in the jankey fifth inning they trailed the rents by a run but have Maddux the third-base talked about Maddux physical problems Joe he had some other problems aside from that he and Billy might were very outspoken that they did not like each other two balls in one strike there's Martin's got that grief theory like Casey Stengel did you keep the five guys with hates you away from the five guys who are undecided they learned well both case I feel playing Maddux the other way I rather rant off he goes to dead center field that Geronimo is there and it these aren't Iran Omo with the inning-ending catch on bully Randolph at the end of four and a half Reds two Yankees one event I might say at the baseball world we take Yogi Berra gmarket suit all wrong loose you know to the Opera they say you have to watch the see Johnny Bench for openers in the bottom of the fifth inning it's two to one cincinnati alexander missing down and away with a breaking ball to bench you hit into a double play his first time coming back toward us and dropping just downstairs one ball and one strike pitch Marty seem to be swinging the bat a little bit better near the end of the season into the playoffs against Philadelphia much better Toni especially against Philadelphia he made good contact time and time again man suffered through a very very rough season in 1976 offensively but I don't think anybody can ever question his ability to do the job behind the plate it certainly did not affect this defensive game pitch away from getting a walk and she had a shoulder injury part of last year how much is a carryover for this year well a padding instructor for the ranch Ted Kluszewski felt like that Johnny got into some bad habits last year as a result of the shoulder problem that he could not get out of this past season he was born for downtown trying to make it 3-2 what that's a bad fall high fastball but if you're gonna spring that's the way to swing god-willing in three balls and two strikes I've got events hey Bill white over in the radio booth you'll be working the school won't we get the Yankee Stadium Brian as you know [Music] [Applause] in search of all while and Mickey rivers on laughter Johnny hits fats when he goes to right-center field with an outside pitch a dead center field thousand but wait a little bit longer here John you think he isn't gonna challenge an armed if the ball is bobbled in center field every kind this Reds ballclub oops they leave whole plate everything's a trouble that's I think you're going to see that quite a bit Tony because as you pointed out earlier the Reds feel like they can run on the Yankee arms in the outfield Johnny took the big turn at first base and I think we're going to be seeing quite a bit of that throughout the course of the series these aren't your on of all the batter talk to him [Music] [Applause] at a super year in 1976 in fact at over 300 for the first time in his professional career got some activity now the Yankee bullpen as the count goes to 2 and nothing on Geronimo left-hander grant Jackson is working dados are now beginning to creep into Riverfront Stadium that could be up there and the Yankees have pulled off their second double play in the game Willie Randolph the best defensive player on this Yankee ballclub he could be the best all-around athlete he's been hurt off and on this year but he has great phrase right left if he gets a pivot on the double play Marty you will see him hanging in there like nobody you can't scare him here's David concepción who tripled the left-center field back in the third inning and came in to score the tiebreaking run in this game [Music] [Applause] alexander's shaking off Munson's first sign and his concepción shortens up on the bat the count even sub 1 1 it'll do that too often the turban is he has a great rapport with his pitching staff they think the like they'll respect his judgment he studies hitters and when hit off the end of the bat Stanley in a close play at first base gets it onto Chambliss to retire concepción and end the inning through 5 complete it remains the Reds over the Yankees 2 to 1 full with a number 9 batter in the Yankee order Fred Stanley leading it off Stanley looked at a called third strike in the third inning is only time up Kelly gets a fastball in the count one ball in one strike very steady shortstop for the New York Yankees this season 110 games only a terrace yes this guy really underrated in the Yankee scheme of things by other ball clubs it's been important Marty for the ain't used to have the same kind of defense every ball game especially for Willie Randolph the youngster working with the same shortstop day in day out thought of changing from base into Stanley to prove the defense up the middle tremendously Tony I once read that Joe McCarthy used to won his second baseman shortstop even warm up together so they learned the mannerism Casey Stengel felt the same way your room together you threw together got a vault it together Gullit falling behind three balls in one strike baby-faced left-hander from Lin Kentucky [Applause] 3 & 2 the count on Fred Stanley and that's the first walk given up by Don Gullett as Stanley starts off the sixth inning walked in over nine hitter [Applause] Lou Pinella at the bat rack in the New York Yankee dugout there's Billy Martin their skipper Johnny Bench has gone out to the mound to talk with Don Gullett as Mickey rivers their leadoff hitter comes up for the third time he struck out swinging on a high fastball in the first inning and then garlic got him to tap out to Morgan in the third thanks of living but gullet plays and they got the leave runner on the food concepción is something that the entire Cincinnati vets club fulfills better than anybody always keep the forest in order they always get the lead runner look at bullet bounced off the mug very quickly he know Stanley does not run as well as rivers there are a super cloth keeping the force situation all the time mr. Rickey as we look at Sparky Anderson miss Ricky's to always say to win on defense you have to keep the double play an order on offense stay away from it by hitting behind the runner and you saw a good example because that's as good a fastball as he's thrown the BAE call it through the concepción so with one out now and one on here's Roy white Marty it's got to be tough for rivers if he's thinking about stealing because gullet gets rid of that ball so fast he's got now let's call it quick release when I was playing just got rid of him I'm sure that's the scouting report the Yankees have on him Joe and he probably has a quickest move to the plate delivery to the plate of anybody on the Reds pitching staff one ball and one strike on white Johnny Bench does something as we look at Roy white most catches when I catch the ball with a base stealing threat on will be ready to throw bench as much as defines you goes down to his knees as if to say if you want to run I'll give you a little starting out gunning out white has hit the ball well both times but all he has to show for it is an old four to afternoon to positive strike it's interesting you mentioned that point you and I was watching as bench gave the sign that call it while he was putting the fingers down he wasn't looking at color he was looking at rivers take his lead to see maybe a little mannerism that me a little extra aggressiveness they tip off a steal that's shocking that shot right there did you see a good catcher and venture serving that it's got one eye going down each foul line one at the runner and his left thigh is going down the Houser Mickey rivers with an outstanding stolen base percentage he attempted 50 this season he was successful 43 times 862 percentage he's off thanks growing they got [Music] and this is a picture throw rivers gets a good jump it's the watching the ball away and watch mortgages put it on what benches balances he cuts it his glove goes on like a bow and arrow from the top and that Paul just seems to bend in the middle he stretched that glove hand out there and it was there in plenty of time because I disagree with you faulty gotta jump it on bench duty took this time oh you gotta get by four steps Tony all right the time Gullickson direct full attention out of the batter Roy why does he gets his Frank you know full count you don't think the catch is ever gonna have a bad game on my brother I know it Geronimo trying to flag it down and go the ball Julia White will go to second base stays aren't Geronimo had that ball and laughs at her feel in fact it appeared to be a routine play but for some unexplainable reason then coughed it up he got a great jump on the ball but his towers and then he just outran the ball he caught the ball almost behind him now he starts nonchalant Ian look at that right off his thumb he won't do that very often if he's ever done at this season white depth on what do you need it two days there there you go Helen Hart Buster said hey he's got it Roy there he takes up again now as you pointed out Tony it's something that Geronimo will do very very rarely had problems with balls get shallow in the outfield at times this season but that particular ball is the ball at ninety nine out of a hundred times he's gonna play it has been scored a two base era this is when this guy's toughest Monson man in scoring position the Yankees hoping to take advantage of the centerfielder Zarin they trail by one run now let's see if they'll send white to the plate they give him the stop sign of a good thing they do that was a sharp line drive single to right field by Thurman Munson Jim griffey with an excellent arm in Dick Howser showed very wise judgment and holding white up to third base with to our short narrow they'll keep that runner going an artificial surface and grippy being positioned perfectly otherwise they did hold him up boy he is a good outfielder buddy he doesn't get enough credit for that I don't think he does Tony he really put on a defensive exhibition in Philadelphia and the playoffs against Danny Ozarks Club we're gonna get some business underway in the Cincinnati bullpen for the first time just after noon time colored will be working to Lou Piniella with runners at first and third that's Pedro Borbon and he's going to be joined in that res bullpen by a left-hander will Mack an attic wall hit well the right-field but a foul ball Claire along the right-field line American Lake Dave Phillips indicating foul as that ball goes down to the corner the Yankees appeared now with that pull-up basketball tailing away from right-handed hitters to be going that way wonder feel forced gullet to come inside little bar where they can lay low and start holding the ball Yankee batting where their offense is a much better team offensively against right-handed pitching left-handed even gamble from the lineup and Carlos Bay a sparky anderson going with another left-hander in the ninth game tomorrow night Freddie Norman will be pitching one hit in two times up for Lou Piniella Morgan's so we have completed five and a half innings to play in Game one the rest to the Yankees one stadium from the red seats the upper deck in this ballpark [Applause] bottom of the sixth inning in Doyle Alexander will have to concern himself with the top of the Cincinnati batting order [Applause] Petros bluffing upon is Alexander bounces one up their parties we saw that panoramic shot I kept thinking that a great thing it is a World Series and this for NBC is the 30th year and our director Harry Coyle 30 years of directing and we're gonna be showing some highlights like we're gonna show you a highlight from a game one of the many years at NBC's been covering World Series one ball and one strike roses Oprah won he flied to Center in the first inning but his fly ball to Mickey rivers consider in the third got the tiebreaking run across 2 & 1 the cop the Cincinnati Reds ever adjust the style of picture that are gone alexander's he is not joining our singers flow curves changes speeds that will find its way back into the seats behind the Yankee dugout third base side gives you a good idea right there of the extreme concentration this man Petros exhibits game in and game out it gives you an idea I think a partial idea what's made him such an outstanding hitter in this game Alexander dealing the to two bits [Applause] Tony and answered your question a moment ago Doyle Alexander his style of pitching the off-speed pitcher is a kind of pitcher that can give the rent a lot of trouble roses block to begin the home half of the sixth inning make it to walks on the day by Doyle Alexander both phenomenal on-base percentages those first three here's the Cincinnati lineup have led by Joe Morgan [Music] [Applause] so ken griffey stepping in as Rose walks Griffey is lying to left field he has also popped up to third base Melanson close looking for a pond but your are doesn't fun a hole after this season [Applause] Griffey with his good speed beats the throw to first base is the Yankees bid to get their third double play great shot call at second base of Petros he does what so many of his Cincinnati guys do breaking up a double play but watch Willie Randolph as Rose comes out to get him no chance for the whole play but he hangs in there he makes the pivot he gets rid of the ball watch this he gets easy for a second base especially if you're second base because it's coming from behind you he stays right with it doesn t Randolph that grows he did everything to break it up put a Windsor knot and Randolph need a shot that left centerfield camera is one tough hit down there Marty it's interesting what Morgan does to the baserunners when he want to run he doesn't this time he does he does Joe because he does not like to no that's not like a runner going unless he knows about it beforehand first pitches in on him for a ball that they creates a tremendous distraction in Joe's case and a very vocal about it and if the runner is going to be going on do from Sparky Anderson to Jorge sure grip to the runner in this case ken griffey Joe Morgan wants to know about it in advance [Applause] all in one strike work at a home run of the first Gooding to right field a fly to left on the fourth eight of the nine red starters in double figures and steals the only one not Pete Rose in East wipe nine bases I think if I were catching after watching sugar I fit you [Applause] Alexandra throws to first base against a man who at 34 stolen bases this season [Applause] two balls in one strike and you have to feel that maybe Doyle Alexander is thinking just a bit about Jen Griffey at 1st base a sugar I asked Munson the Yankee catcher what he wants his 10 pitchers to do to help him out the face Joe he said pick them off Bowl each am thinking with gold are gonna steal it that's tough to throw any of them if he keeps throwing that lollipop like he just did here there's no way he better throw to third to head him off at the pass [Applause] you have to have a great percentage throw anybody against like a girl in Brody [Applause] morgen waiting on the 2-2 pitch with Griffey at 1st base Red's have attempted one stolen base earlier in the game Tony Perez thrown out in the first inning Alexander continues to work that way [Applause] Cincinnati getting single run to the first and third the Yankees scored their run in the second Oakland California still Morgan [Applause] aiexander stepping back off the pitching rubber big rig drifting giving no ground at first hey thank you right and ER as far as he can go with Morgan three and two now Marty Thurman Munson in this meeting his pre World Series meeting with his pitching staffs that listened if you want to throw over the first base for the base suitors go ahead give it a few times but then forgettable you concentrate on the hitter because that guy the guy can hurt you at the back of his hand well against the Cincinnati club that's excellent advice Griff he's going Burgin strikes out and Griff he's good he's safe at second base on the low throw for months and his family monstrous throw he suffered at fault watch where he gets the ball and watch where he releases it it's low and he lured from about their sidearm and that ball has to sync the contrast to Johnny bench's throw from the top hunter close his sidearm his family did a good job getting in front of it two away now in the inning and that strikeout of Jewell Morgan is Doyle Alexander's first in the game you'll be facing Tony Perez who has been the number one tormentor against Alexander today he's singled in the first inning and then double a left field in the fourth [Applause] these are very very good or very very weak in World Series flavor as in 1970 was one for 18 in 1972 in a 435 flip and last year was five for 28 at 179 but three of those five hits four home runs Sparky Lyle dick Tidrow double barrel action in the New York Yankee bullpen designated hitter Danny briefs and a falls right tips roll right-hander Lyle the left-hander for the Yankees typicals arm has got to be hanging he put in a lot of innings against Kansas City that was good he played by Thurman Munson [Applause] the Yankees get out of the inning but the rats will to run and as we have completed sixth innings of play at Cincinnati 3 in New York one [Music] Gibson this whole story storm the Mormon at the place norm cash [Music] 1968 Bob Gibson New World Series record there it is 16 strikeouts Willie Horton there it is Bob Gibson 17 Tigers as we look back 1968 we'll be doing it throughout the series NBC for 30 years we've been covering world series and we'll be looking back different highlights Chris Chambliss swings and misses strike one Chambliss bounced out second to first and single left was roughed out in a double play show the ironies of baseball chris chambliss could well being a cincinnati uniform today in 1967 he was drafted 29th by the Reds did not sign it was redrafted by Cincinnati again in 1968 he just got hit with a pitch ball so that puts him on and that brings up the tying run it's three to one fastened make this pitch properly I think another interesting story Joe when Chambliss was acquired in that deal from Cleveland a lot of the incas were very outspoken saying he's not worth getting for what we gave up he proved his worth in that fifth game against Kansas City and all season long gave Paul had quite an answer for all those charges he said number one I'm breaking up the country club and number two I don't seen any players contract where they have a right to make a deal this is Greg nettles high fastball ball one Marty will make the ballgame he hasn't pitched that many innings this year as we can lately know Tony he has been very very strong his last card out against the Phillies in the playoffs he was throwing as hard probably in the last couple of innings as he was early went in top of the seventh Cincinnati leading Peter one nobody out Chambliss at first could be to Morgan only fakes it throws it makes a double play was going to concepción put the tag on shambleau and then put two 4s with double play what handle spent a mistake trying to pinochle maybe should have tried to go around him but either way with metals running they were going to get a double play I'll show you the alertness of a chill Morgan like a boxer Tony I guess there's only two ways to break up that play if you can think fast enough you'd be caught in a rundown and then they'll throw to first and get you back alright just collide with the guy why didn't do it once he's got the ball in his possession you can knock him over you said that about an infielder I wouldn't say to our shortstop second baseman here is Elliott Maddox he bounced out third to first and any triple he's 1 for 2 highball two outs nobody on Cincinnati leading 3 to 1 when the top of the 7th from up here joy hasn't appeared that God has thrown a whole lot of off-speed pitches he has one or two I can before even breaking balls it's hard to tell the spider the fastball from up here but it's a hard slider this is not an off-speed pitch as Paul high two balls in one strike gullet in 1976 started 20 games and completed only four he's getting the ball open up now that last breaking ball hung up in the strike zone hi I saw to play two balls and two strikes and home cullet has an amazing record last two seasons he was ten and one here riverfront 1975 6 & 1 1976 combined Road record for the two years ten and five - to pitch out of play he's hold hard yes he is party we mentioned earlier that gullet is playing on his office that's tine what's the rumor or what have you heard about ready to sign well there have been some comments lately Tony that would seem to indicate that maybe the Reds will be fortunate enough to sign time gullet for 1977 he was ported a couple of days ago as saying he would like to think that the two parties could get together on a contract for next season but nothing officially and by any nature curveball misses it's a full count three balls two strikes Elliott Maddox go let's take a little more time now between pitches trying to get his breath sparked he's got two guys going to the pen bar Bouldin mackaninee here's the 3-2 pitch ball four he walked him pellet seems to be walking around the mound more rubbing up the baseball there are a couple little telltale signs of pictures have start to change the baseball it doesn't feel good they'll walk around the mound start to kick it to rubber they start looking in the dugout you know they're in trouble or in the bullpen you start looking that way you better start looking on your mailbox for your release here is Willie Randolph load is all one there's a good close-up of Don Gullett as Larry Shepard the pitching coach comes down how could you holler at a kid who looks like that color it's just 11 Marty serpent walking off fans didn't seem to know what the tool whether to cheer what one ball no strikes two outs Cincinnati leading 3 to 1 weirdest 7th Randolph with Maddox at first low again two balls no strikes exchanging the baseball when Shepherd went out there a lot of times he'll ask a basic question the pitching coach will and maybe he doesn't listen for the answer but more how the answer comes down because many times a pitcher when he's in trouble will become a whole pitcher I hope I get to fall over I hope the Hinson I hope they catch it and I hope I can finish the game all three if he loses him he's gone well that would be losing it in an awful hurry I think the Cincinnati Reds pitching staff above anybody else on this team have something to prove they have been maligned everybody says they're mediocre I'd like to prove something in this series that's true Tony I guess every team the Reds play the first thing they say is if the club has a weakness since its pitching staff and for Sparky Anderson is one who relies greatly on his bullpen history is if the starting pitcher can give him six for seven good innings era Sparky Anderson he's going to get somebody else in there to finish it up pinch hitter on the on-deck circle should Randolph get on Maddox is on at first two men out here's the payoff pitch oh poor lofty Maddox goes down to second Randolph goes to first and it looks like Otto Velez will be a pinch hitter or Fred Stanley Sparky Anderson looking on Sparky just waiting for the pits interval as to be acknowledged that he is officially in the ballgame you may see him jump out very quickly but if he does that and changes to a right-hander you better believe that Carlos may Oscar gamble are going to grab a bat the tool-mark is standing out that are waiting for the official announcement Sparky's I guess he's been announced Sparky's now say hey wouldn't you want to pitch to Balazs or see me or gamble you'd rather pitch to the Lance did it go [Applause] the last two home runs 10 runs batted in it in 266 he had a pass [Applause] Maddox is second Randolph the first Cincinnati 3 Yankees one where to seventh this is good what a picture too should go up there and hack yet a high breaking ball at that time that's sugar party enters first manager in baseball the minor leagues two-strike fish all one Sparky Anderson and George sugar there is punky Anderson as a coach for the San Diego Padres memories one two fish football game and then the big event the baseball world tour garrulous starts it will take you to the Opera as we look at Jim Mason the new shortstop 12:30 Eastern time with grandstand and six regional NFL games so expect your listings for the game in your area and then we're part of the big event Sunday night game line fried the next return but he's going back [Applause] near the outfield has got a club you anxious moments if you annoy your throwing arm is not that strong and you know the Cincinnati Reds runners are running right from the whole plate the Reds forced a lot of mistakes [Applause] Johnny Bench with posture first posture stole 17 times 20 attempts low ball one he doesn't get much of a lead at all best way you can measure it here it's easy is how poor does you get on the artificial surface and posture doesn't what a hole ventures got between Randolph and Chambliss he can go that way out of cage this far to hit run wouldst a while with him [Applause] Oh [Applause] let's place that fog low the power he was going that way all the way to got his pen we watch the blade not familiar with the ballpark here in Cincinnati that play became quite right he's left he's got those bad knees all gone a little bit fricking he thought it would and show excellent base running judgment Tony he tried to shoot that gap as we look at Billy Martin talking to Alexander he's gonna make the most part you Lyle is coming in so there's a break in the action with the score here Cincinnati for the Yankees one it's a very delicate situation we understand right now Sparky Lyle with Johnny Bench on third nobody out one run in four two one Cincinnati out in front and Geronimo is the batter strike one Lyle led the American League in saves as we look at bench of third base 1976 fourth year 23 of them won seven lost eight 64 games 2.26 on average [Applause] well this soil wild pitch strikes apart while this is not the kind of situation when I'll explain right that he would ordinarily come in on he would usually comes in late football game with his pup is tied or ahead they say his lost his slider that's what he just pounds bucks makes to fetch try to block it but it cuts away off the heel of his glove while I believe is in Billy Martin's dog house there's a good old pitch Braille it's easy to get the dog house [Applause] nobody out 2 runs in 5 1 Cincinnati and the bottom of the stomach with Geronimo at 2nd base Joe I think that the rents are playing on a great deal of emotion today and generate it not so much in addition to the fact this is the first game of the World Series but by virtue of an article that appeared in the Cincinnati morning newspaper Billy Martin's comparison position by position and it seemed to upset a number of the Reds players and that he they felt like they were slighted in favor of the New York Yankee ballplayers hina concepción I gotta believe though that they would certainly take note of the author I don't think Billy Martin's gonna say this ballclub except seoane had a good cut one ball one strike Geronimo at second till the Yankees came into this world series under not ideal circumstances the pitching staff was highly regarded the three top pitchers Hunter Figueroa and doc Ellis are not able to start a very important game the first game of the series and it's almost as though and this is not an octave ball example pitched well they throw a guide out there and get their other pictures of few days rest say you didn't do too badly the game held him for six innings three two one hold this ballclub Tim McCarver made quite a statement he was doing the pregame show he said you can't stay close to Cincinnati he'll beat you you can't win those three two one two two one games you got to win ten six one ball two strikes struck him out all tip held onto by Thurman Munson so there is one away Maya will have to face Pete Rose around the right side Hall of Famer Bob lemon Billy Martin back to the corner Marty I think you could attest to this to a very few ball covered with lace Park uses bullpen that can come back when they're down in the later things get Cincinnati that's true Tony now we're getting ready to go to the eighth after the red stood here and that gets to be rawly Eastwick time Sparky Anderson does not like to bring him in if he can help it any earlier than the eighth inning and would like to be able to run him out of the ninth inning to nail a game down and we're getting to that point right now bouncy ball Mason Chambliss they kept Ross and Geronimo moves on over to third two outs two rounds in five one Cincinnati leading here is Ken Griffey example the kind of pace runners this club is and what their speed does ordinarily ball to the left side they hold second base your ball club party just keeps on going well I think Joe said it earlier they force things to happen Tony this block left will try and take advantage of every mistake whether it be a metal mistake or a physical mistake they're gonna try and burn you with outside ball one [Applause] Serrano boy third grippy because this B simply says is just Ralph Garr with power it says a lot one ball one strike Griffey great speed at the winning door behind game number three of the championship series [Applause] peplau unfallen two strikes good is that great downward chop on the ball for the artificial surface and look at Morgan and also to take advantage of his speed founded in the dirt and take off that first step out of the box he's in full gear [Applause] Sparky Lyle in relief of toil Alexander 5:1 Cincinnati bottom of the seventh [Applause] taste the bat ball and that's all for Griffey so that ends the inning but the red score 2 at the end of 7 is Cincinnati 5 New York one kind of interesting everybody going down to Commissioner Kuhns box try to get a statement hi Paul one that was Augie for you the New York Daily News we have to be some official announcement here because tell you boy mr. Kuhn getting on a hotline now picking up the phone talking to somebody the ball is popped up Johnny fans you can really catch those foul balls got it stealing frat boy he does that so well Marty probably better than anybody in the National League Joey the guy simply can do it behind the plate I don't know that you can say enough about Johnny Bench to really give him credit for the defensive work have you understood a mr. pop foul I've never seen you miss more in three years same with Joey never missed it good thing I'm humble here is Roy white always hit the ball hard all day today but he's over 3 you may have noticed the tape around Johnny bench's left thumb just swollen bruised one of those would you call it I guess hazards of the job there's a face hit Roy white singled to left field Foster plays the big hop and Roy white is on Johnny Bench is going out to talk to kill it and here comes the Cincinnati trainer as we look at Roy white at first base very stars the trainer and here comes Sparky Anderson now what do you think marty I don't really that looks like now a indicate something is wrong with his right ankle Joe and apparently it's something has just come up because Donna's had no front the season was your pitching staff is dog-tired Sparky Anderson can turn to Pedro Borbon Thurman Munson is in the batter's box and we've got a pinch-hitter coming out of the Yankee dugout pinch-hitter for Piniella Munson is one for three makes it hide inside ball one McEnaney continues to throw and now the guy that you talked about earlier raleigh Eastwick has gotten up this is usually his time in the ball game ball out of play there you see him while he's quick is the right-hander will McEnaney is the left-hander [Applause] well they were really the gold dust for his last year one thing that they were maybe she's right white leaping off tapped on a third baseline part bones gonna have to hustle honey nice play by far bone Monson running hard is out at first Roy white takes second Munson runs fairly well when you know Paul like this don't get that to the jump out of the box I'll tell you did a pretty good sheet job down at first basis before dome or vote Rangers fire there's right what if Perez got off that base kind of quickly like a bullfighter here is Carlos May he is the pinch-hitter for Lou Piniella he's been a designated hitter most of the year strong looking hitter chokes up on that bat if 259 three home runs 43 runs batted in break1 Tom : had to leave the game for bone is now the pitcher for Cincinnati line drive right field one hand grab by 50 so we for the Fallen half of the eighth inning his 425 New York one C four hesitation a preliminary report from the Cincinnati globe house that darn colet's sprained his right ankle [Music] here is Morgan hit a home run give me since a Rizzoli to me first-inning takes it outside ball one plied the left that was out on strikes what is the stream of reporters going down to see the commissioner and I will cruise with the APS down there trying to get a report there's Morgan lines to Randolph he joined us late what happened sequence Billy Martin talked to George Steinbrenner and gave Paul were seated in the official box and if that gave Paul got up left and went to talk to Commissioner cured his later life he was in there it's a supposed man it's not confirmed report time killer yeah I felt like a situation involving technical equipment we've also talked to Lee MacPhail was he leave wire the umpire [Music] everybody except Secretary of State Henry Kissinger funk ball one strike on 24s [Music] but he was calling from downtown Tony's had a big day today he's single in the first thing he was out stealing and he doubled in the fourth inning and they drove him to run in his sixties three for three the guys are once again talking about trading the most consistent RBIs the most consistent in the National League over the past ten years one ball two strikes one man out I don't even eat Sparky Lyle wants a new baseball Cincinnati leading five to one sparking with a shooter back I like a couple pumps a lot of play what do you think Larry both coming through to him as he walked by my start had disgusted looking games bench on your pregame show that's just a little water all two strikes taste the bat ball Perez is out on strikes Munson has two tanking top part of the ballgame - hit it now you can see the shadow has gone halfway between home plate in the pitcher's mound and on the sunny day the hitters have typically picking the pitch hop the score runs date-time here do it early look like that screwball Tony and turns it over Danny Driessen he's all for three strike his call by Lee Weyer fastball once again activity in a Cincinnati bullpen strike two rawly Eastwick looking ahead to the ninth Chambliss nettles and Maddox Chambliss bobbles the ball and spikey louder than the spectator there's nobody there first base Michael I'll get the cover first recent runs very well Chambliss was playing well off the line he may have taken his eye off football he might still have had time to throw bots have SPARQL go over although I doubt it because he was playing deep good thing he held on to the ball part he just froze [Music] two outs here is George Foster Buster walk single single high flyball left-field Roy white waiting makes the play so that mzn and at the end of eight its Cincinnati five New York one we look at the commissioners box and he's on a telephone the official announcement is we got it from Bob worse and he's here to make sure I say it right as we watch the commissioners still on the phone bouncy ball and takes it inside the Yankees were given permission to use people in the upper deck with technical equipment to help them set up the defense when it was set up there were some variations as to what was previously agreed to and the Commissioner was not satisfied with the new setup and so he whipped through his permission for the day they'll have another meeting cinch and come up with something so there's only intrigue as we watch Greg nettles Wow Cincinnati leading five to one when the top of the ninth waited 24 [Applause] always get hard but right at him Chris Reynolds is lying drive Tony Perez of course playing deep for the left-handed batter and had to backhand that hard hit liner just off the edge of the astroturf Joe we were talking yesterday about Tony Perez one of the most underrated first basemen defensively in baseball that's what his manager says about him and there you see him as we got a pinch-hitter for Maddux Oscar gamble has come on to pinch-hit with nobody on two men out top of the ninth Cincinnati leading five to one poor Paul and relief of gullet who sprained his right ankle all one outside to gamble Oscar gamble that cutley wire the umpire on the right shoulder one all one strike gamble gamble in 232 the 17 home runs west a foul tip get lee weyer right off the right shoulder boy that hurts hi ball two two balls in one strike he wires a pretty good-sized target there he's a big man Paul territory 15 over Rose may have a plane he does people it makes the plate that ends the ballgame and the Cincinnati Reds [Applause] the World Series by the score of five the line now they are congratulating one another Tony Perez Morgan concepción Rosa Sparky Anderson comes out Larry Shepherd the Cincinnati Reds defeat the New York Yankees in the first game by the score of five to one Don Gullett was the starter had to leave because of a sprained ankle Gullit is now 2 & 1 in World Series competition and Marty he didn't look fast up there so the Cincinnati Reds head to the clubhouse and they are the victors and we'll be right back with some interviews talked to the players right after this
