have as much power as that steady he could get burned a lot of times up the alleys and over his head three balls and one strike he is shallow at that great speed he can outrun the ball Doyle Alexander high flyball left centerfield Roy white taken charge rivers moving over and our rivers takes it roses out flat ball to Mickey rivers and it brings up Ken Griffey hippy get three 36 six home runs 74 runs batted in stole 34 bases 45 attempts 5 for 13 in the championship series I tell you all these averages on both these ball clubs very high in a championship series strike one and certainly I know you join me in congratulating the Kansas City ballclub and those Phillies Kansas City especially bottom of the ninth and dramatic home run to lose it ready pot SEC was right guessing the baseball world is still talking about it huh ball some strikes roofie but a whole lot party during the season not a whole lot Tony he did maybe the last couple of weeks of the season when he was out in front of the batting race when he passed Billy Matlock and especially on her last road trip for the West Coast he punted a couple of times but more often than not grippy will put on natural turf rather than the artificial surface yeah a lot of good field hits though didn't he had a total of 39 during the season your fee up there with the commas two strikes Griffey finished second of Madlock 336 Medlock fastball hitting club unusual most clubs are basically a high fastball hitting close let's fall outside to Tony Perez Joe Morgan was a boxer you'd have to say was just a short knockout punch it's just very compact swing that he fakes fell out of power two balls no strikes on Tony Perez the 260 in the regular season 19 home runs 91 runs better than that's his big strength RBIs good fastball two balls in the strike the yardstick of the RBI man is can he drive a man em from first base they say Perez can drive him in from the clubhouse hey in one big employee well the man good since applying for this time base he becomes a different kind of hitter I think you baby just as a little bit more looks for certain pitches he bears down with down [Applause] good point as you saw Mickey rivers throat come in from centerfield it was short left center he pops the ball very weakly an off target and you better believe the Reggie to take advantage of those Yankee throwing arm sometime during Chambliss is playing behind Perez if he gets too far behind he ain't gonna be there Marty [Applause] there he goes here's his family that ends the inning but the Cincinnati Reds take the lead on the market home run and watch this growing bag they're checking out Munson zombie - a lot better the last two games against the Kansas City Royals but even now you saw the ball pale away for a great feel think an artificial surface it'll be even a better hitting ballclub line drive down the right-field line so fair ball should be extra bases for Piniella heading for second he'll hold on with a double Tony very surprising because basically in this ballpark if you're a pull hitter whether you'll be left-handed or right-handed you could have a fine year because it's a veritable jet stream down both foul lines but when you got maybe 20 or 30 feet on from each line you've got to hit the ball a ton and that ball as you said did carry extremely well one apiece here is Elliott Maddox strike went season for Roy white this one will be out of flight interesting the comparison that you can make between the rent and the Yankee Cincinnati received 212 more walks in 1976 then did the New York Yankees and I think one of the big factors there is the discipline at the plate of a guy like Joe Morgan consistently walks over a hundred times every year felon again with a payoff [Applause] why just hit the ball well he gotta fall inside and look up from Gullit almost directly happy pros Louis has good hands he doesn't cover a whole lot of ground but he does have good hands he is really a passer got great reflexes Tony the guy has done a super job for the Reds at third base there was a gamble last year people thought Sparky Anderson was crazy when he made the move early in the year but it's been the thing I guess more than anything else it's solidified this ballclub because it allowed George Foster to go to left field on an everyday basis Thurman Munson struck out swinging in the first inning talk to Sparky Anderson about the key to beating the New York Yankees and of course Mickey rivers his name probably comes up more than any other but you have to give a lot of credit to this man he's great with men on base he's had a super season and as Joe mentioned earlier as a good shot at the most valuable player award in the American League should be play by Griffey it always seems that the World Series time the shadows become a factor are they a factor in this ballpark there most definitely are a factor Joe I don't think so much in the OP feel is we will probably see they like to think of this town as the baseball capital of the world Joe and it's a I think it's a big small town I think it's the best way to describe Cincinnati why to first Perez heatwaves Gullit off and I'm gullet as another one two three a we're here in Cincinnati 3 and a half innings have gone by in the first game of this World Series and with the Reds coming to Madison in Cincinnati as we move on to the Reds half of the fourth inning Joel Morgan who exploded one out of here to right field in the first inning off Doyle Alexander Morgan a picture of concentration at the plate Alexandra starting him off with an off-speed fits it slow for a ball the rents of course have faced us guys some five years ago when he was brought up by the LA Dodgers and in three appearances against insanity and one relief appearance the Reds hit him and hitting it will live innings 21 hits 11 earned runs two balls and a strike they give morgan's just about all of left field well they are playing him show more radically than the national league outfielder is played Doyle Alexander right where he was in the first and he was working when Joe played long ball as you got a look at the New York Yankee outfield fact the entire defense is over shifted to the right for the foul back Munson giving chase but will not have a play the count is full market a great fastball hitter he has a lot of confidence in his ability not to have anybody throw the ball by him he stands all the stuff in front of the plate at times daring you to throw the fastball by him the position that Alexander got him in in the in the first inning and then Sparky Anderson testing Thurman Munson Turley at Perez going with Danny Driessen at the plate and it was an easy out at second base he is going with a lot of slow stuff slow curve that time he even pulled the string on Morgan on the three into town yeah I tell you I keep thinking of Bill leave doing that last year and Perez pull that left field wall in behind third base Perez in a big hole in two strikes to wrench leading the Yankees 2 to 1 in the bottom of the fourth inning that was a good shot of Munson who gives the target with the glove he just moved out let's see if he wastes this to set up 42 changeup with little fingers [Applause] [Music] Perez getting onto it right in this world interesting way of 50 and playing a defense right there Devils was way off the line at third base white was left centerfield they pulled the string daring them to pull the ball Tony a lot of times when that happened there's a shot of as he gets by nettles is that still had plenty of time to get the ball to concepción and on for a double play Tony I gotta believe the best defensive infielder has is when he submarines that ball like concepción did because boy if he played in only 18 games this year Willie Randolph who played against Cincinnati last year in postseason play but in a different uniform strike joy he was with a Pittsburgh Pirates and faced the rats while with that Club and last year's National League playoff one ball and one strike with two out in the jankey fifth inning they trailed the rents by a run but have Maddux the third-base talked about Maddux physical problems Joe he had some other problems aside from that he and Billy might were very outspoken that they did not like each other two balls in one strike there's Martin's got that grief theory like Casey Stengel did you keep the five guys with hates you away from the five guys who are undecided they learned well both case I feel playing Maddux the other way I rather rant off he goes to dead center field that Geronimo is there and it these aren't Iran Omo with the inning-ending catch on bully Randolph at the end of four and a half Reds two Yankees one event I might say at the time again man suffered through a very very rough season in 1976 offensively but I don't think anybody can ever question his ability to do the job behind the plate it certainly did not affect this defensive game pitch away from getting a walk and she had a shoulder injury part of last year how much is a carryover for this year well a padding instructor for the ranch Ted Kluszewski felt like that Johnny got into some bad habits last year as a result of the shoulder problem that he could not get out of this past season he was born for downtown trying to make it 3-2 what that's a bad fall
