what's rogram has brought to you in living color hi I'm Joe Garagiola in New York and I'm Sandy Koufax in Pittsburgh and it's our pleasure to welcome you to the very first night game in World Series history World Series reports 71 with Joe Garagiola and Sandy Koufax brought to you by Texaco and the many thousands of Texaco retailers and distributors in all 50 states trust Texaco to have the right gasoline leave you what an evening this figures to be since 1935 when the very first major league night game was played in Cincinnati night baseball has become an important part of the baseball scene since 1903 the World Series has been America's number one sports event and tonight for the very first time the two come together and in the next half hour sandy and I invite you to join us for some looks at yesterday's third game of this year's World Series we're gonna visit with some of the men who have helped the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Baltimore Orioles get into this year's World Series and a special trip into the world of the umpires including the chance to see what kind of an umpire you would make and then we're gonna have a special visit from two old friends Bob and Ray you know some players prefer to play night games while others like Ernie Banks of the Chicago Cubs well he says things like the time to play this game is during the day sometimes I think that's the real reason the Lord invented sunshine well not to me it really didn't make too much difference you see the evenings were just a little bit cooler and that changed my game plan a little bit because I had to take a jacket to the bullpen and I'm just wondering about Sandy Koufax but first I do want to ask sandy sandy do we need a jacket tonight because of the weather Joe it's been a very pleasant day and they say it's going to be a pleasant evening temperature-wise forecast 55 60 degrees the only problem is they're also forecasting a 30 to 40% chance of rain and that could cause a problem we're hoping that it'll be later tonight before the rain shows up here in Pittsburgh sandy what about a night game what did you rather pitch a night or during the day well I think as you started to talk about it I think the weather played a big factor in that being a pitcher you get to July and August in the East it's very hot and humid sometimes you prefer the evening cuz it was easier to keep your stuff a lot of hitters I think prefer to play during the day maybe for that reason maybe they see the ball better how about the catcher signals after all you know the catcher's got to lead you pitchers through it and you have to see the signal did you see him at night you have any problems well sometimes on the road you could have a little bit of a problem because of the gray uniform it being a little tougher to see from the mound but I've known that there are some pitchers who've had problems seeing the catcher signs all the time hey I discussed that sandy with an old teammate of yours Joe pignatano catcher with you and now he's the coach with the New York Mets just wondering did you have any problems with pitchers who didn't see the ball or see your finger signs yes Joe I did especially in the Coliseum the Coliseum was bad the lighting was real bad and Drysdale he used to give me he used to give me what he was gonna throw I never called him he called him and he'd walk up to the rubber well use this is the rubber here and he'd go like this that was his fastball and if he was knocking dirt from his cleats that was his curveball and he threw his changeup off his fastball did he move you at all behind the plate he couldn't shake you off cuz he was calling the pitchers right dad Joe he did he shook his head but only because I was sitting inside he wanted to ball outside or vice versa but that's the only time he shook his head man I wish some of my pictures had done that I mean call our own game that would have saved me a lot of embarrassing moments because managers would always start with the same line hey dummy how could you call for a fastball in a spot like that you know as I watched the third game of the World Series yesterday I couldn't help thinking about the different styles of the players that I was watching and made me wonder if baseball is what singers have in mind when they sing about the games people play Roberto Clemente they say this is the worst-looking best hitter in baseball look at him screw himself into the ground needs a pair of pliers you get him out of there a good bad ball hitter strikes on is any ball he can reach here's Manny say again I like his style of just reaching for the ball forget the body there's the bat on the ball nice little polite single may have done it the artificial turf just reaches they say you should get your body into it watch this fella Frank Robinson this is a hitting clinic perfect swing every ounce into the swing look at the follow-through perfect this is Bob Robertson watch the top half of his body all strength when he goes into it look at those arms belong in a baking-soda box power on this base hit I'm going to show you a classic slide hook slide away from the infielder Brooks Robinson though this is not classic almost historical that was an air of course that was a classic headfirst slide but a little half gainer my Oliver here it is in slow motion did give you a heartburn the hard way a third-base going back watch the helmet come off on this when he gets a kneecap sandwich this is where it has to hurt Robinson's me hit Oliver put a Windsor knot right on his nose classic pitcher yesterday Steve Blass fastball in the outside corner strike one the thing to watch here is where he puts the ball outside corner if he could pitch there all the time lowing outside he'd go to hall of fame on a one-way ticket this next pitches of fastball couldn't hit this with four bats perfect pitch that'll make a broadcaster out of you quick in any pitch I know hitting his timing and pitching is upsetting the timing now that was a slow curveball watching in slow motion way out in front big boom pow and there is Steve Blass he's congratulating everybody inside he's heading for the clubhouse and he's heading for an interview which is not too unusual when you win a World Series ball game but for an unusual interview I'll tell you something you just stay right where you are the American family on the road a grand sight automatic transmission for convenience air conditioned for comfort trailing a camper or abode or a roof piled high with luggage all that extra load forces your engine to work a lot harder and hotter more than 50 degrees hotter than normal when your engine is running this hot it can literally cook the motor oil and begin to destroy it when it cools it can become a solidified sludge like material that could ruin your engine and your trip that's why Texaco engineers developed a Volyn super-premium all temperature motor oil it won't break down under the grueling strain of hot long-distance Friday so before you and the family cruise off into the sunset get a crankcase full of havilland super premium all temperature motor oil it's like buying travel insurance or sustained long-distance driving so for products you can trust trust your car to the man who wears the Texaco star coverage of the World Series by all parts of the media is tremendous and that's why we feel very lucky to have with us one of America's top reporters a very special guest in keeping with a big event like the first World Series night game we've arranged to have with us Bob and rays ace reporter Wally Ballou he's standing by with an in-depth interview with one of baseball's fading stars play below with my pregame guests the grizzled veterans of some 20 odd years of baseball who's retiring this season and I speak of course of stuffy Hudson's stuffy how do you feel well I feel pretty sad naturally after all these years to realize that it's the last campaign pretty sad I think that's a pretty adorable reaction to have after a career like yours a horrible way to feel but still at all you got to admit the game has been pretty good to you well not as good to me as some of these young punks that are coming along well now I sets a note of Riker that stuffy what do you meet exactly well when I first came up here playing the game was everything you get paid for it but the kids now all they care about is the big bonus and the big salary and the big cars and the big homes beautiful women vintage wines making TV commercials and movies and sleeping late in the morning looks like guys like you went wrong somewhere along the line doesn't it like I say this game passed me by somewhere now these kids they all of these little radios going in the locker room all day playing a bunch of noise oh I don't understand that kind of music whatever happened to the signs that the Kate Smith and Pat Boone sang I mean those guys sang real songs well I don't know much about the music stuffy but I do know one thing that you barrage to keep your sense of humor yeah have to I think that's a very important as a matter of fact that sense of humor has made you a big demand speaker on the banquet circuit could you tell us one of those stories well I like to Wally sure I always remember the first time I came up to bat in the big leagues I was just a kid of course and I was nervous and they had a big left-hander on the mound that day do you remember him yeah I remember well he was he was throwing real smoke that day I couldn't see those pitches go by me the umpire back of a plate remember him a great big guy big guy yeah well he's two strike three you're out so uh like I say I was a kid nervous and everything I took my bat and I threw it straight up in the air well the umpire at the coffee mask and he comes over to me and he says a young man I was young man a nice is sick young man if that bad comes down you're out of the game the kids don't have jokes and anecdotes like that mean no I guess I guess they don't tell me this I know over the years you've come to be known as a guy who didn't take too much care of his diet didn't look out for what he ate or drank or how much and still at all you look to be in pretty good shape how do you account for that well looks can be deceiving Wally actually I haven't felt good for a couple of years oh that's all what do you mean well I'm a suffering from chronic Garagiola well what is that exactly well in addition to a low back pain it's the persistent inability to hit a pitched ball with a bat see now over these past 20 years stuffy you must have seen a lot of changes take place of the game could you tell us about one that seems to stand out wow this is artificial turf you know you have turned the game around you have the urine feelings back there to make a play the ball takes these crazy hops and jumps up and hits them here on the clavicle or something no no you gotta have ground to play this game on dig in and make a plate listen you better dig in and make a play if you don't dig in to make a play you're not gonna win this game and that goes for both teams irregardless I guess so do you think now they're going to retire your number now I just would give it a speed-up single I want to ask you one more question it must be a real thrill to be here at this historic first night World Series game yes it is a real thrill well it's just another ballgame he said that like a real evolve are just another ballgame Bob and Roy got hit in a clavicle I know what a clavicle is it's right there hey for the men you'll see playing tonight though in tonight's ballgame their training ground went from the sandlots and the minor leagues but there also be some men on the field who went through a different kind of training watch this what are those guys doing you figure oh that's nice guys ball-ball okay that's what they like to call you know once they've learned the three hours of umpire and I think there are three ours we used to have reading riting and rithmetic they got Rule books right decisions and running catches out of the game sometimes they need help isn't that easy now Luther mural his eyes were all right his ears might have been deceiving he thought the ball hit the bat Frank Robinson said hit his leg the camera shows you where it hit but Lou DiMuro didn't have that camera listen to this [Applause] possible he ever thank you talking to Siri tagged him to me when you were not [Music] gotcha the punches will show last year's World Series diction and grammar was perfect now watch this what motivates an umpire this is a peaceful site and then look out now watch the umpires gonna be the peacemaker but he's smart enough never take off his mask and then self-preservation sometimes an umpire doesn't make a decision once you try to sneak in there now oops get in the back door to the servants entrance hey now if you ever sat in a ball park and you booed an umpire's decision what's coming up is especially for you even if you haven't food anybody let's find out right now what kind of an umpire you'd make remember now you're the umpire and we want a decision and we want it right now the umpire has to make his decision right away watch what is he how you call it too soon okay here's another one safer out gotta wait watch this what you call it he was safe well how'd you do you have a better appreciation now they're you umpires job but to be completely honest we kind of picked those plays not every call is that tough sometimes you get all set for a real close call one of those bang Bang's and it turns out to be an easy one watch this one and um part was very Italian wasn't he and just a minute will be time to talk to some of the people most directly concerned in this year's World Series the guys who are looking for a winner's share welcome to the Metropolitan Opera House in New York curtain time is still hours away while it's quiet texaco the company that has been broadcasting the Opera for over 30 years would like to take you on a tour of the house behind-the-scenes the hundreds of details that go into each performance are carefully pulled together detailed set designs costumes lights props all to enhance the pleasure of you the Opera audience we hope having seen this will add your listening pleasure when our Texaco radio broadcasts begin again on December 11 [Music] well right here it's time to talk to the man who hit the big homerun for the Pittsburgh Pirates yesterday Bob Robertson and a couple of fellas who know what it's like to be the winning pitcher in the World Series Pittsburgh's Steve Blass and our own Sandy Koufax thank you Joe and since it seems that most people would like to see the long ball in baseball talk to the man who hit the homerun Bobby first of all you hit that on us on a bunt play you were supposed to be sacrificing there's very little chance of your being fine by Danny Murtaugh is there no there wasn't any indication that was gonna be fine yes he Danny didn't say anything after the game about either smile a little bit but in a very important series like this whenever you make a mental mistake like I did I think you should be fine but the way things have turned out I think was for the best I don't think anybody to argue most of all Steve Blass what about this ballpark this is the first night game in World Series history a lot of hitters have said that they have trouble seeing the ball at night they only see the top half of all what are the lighting conditions in this new Pittsburgh Park we have wonderful lighting your outings for making difference rather playing at night here all these for making difference to the pitchers are to the hitters especially in this ballpark we get good lights and the rest of stadiums in the leg some amount as good as we have here so I don't expect any trouble as far as singing about home plate what about the pitcher for the Orioles tonight Pat Dobson I think you faced him when he was at San Diego did you hit him well what do you expect I guess you're a whole ballclub probably knows him toughen well he has the same type of stuff that Palmer has for Baltimore he doesn't throw as hard but he's got the same type of breaking pitch he has come up with a farm ball an off-speed pitch which he uses a great deal so I'm looking forward to a real good valve the night between the pitchers and hitters what about hitting in this ballpark at night does the ball carry not quite as well here in the evening as it does during the day I don't think the balls gonna carry is good tonight as it did yesterday in the ballgame if I get ahold of one or the other head let's get ahold of one if you hit a good enough it's gonna go out it does make a difference about to win I know you're strong enough to hit it out of anywhere and thank you very much and good luck to you and I'm gonna talk to your partner over here Steve Blass for a while Steve congratulations on yesterday's I've seen in the series one of the finest I've seen all year it looked like you had great stuff and great control all through the game yeah it was a good ballgame and thank you very much I'll pay Robertson's fine and he fine he gets off take care of the the tab on it I felt better as the ball game went along because I wound up having three pitches to work on and usually during a ball game you wind up discarding a pitch along the way or going to another pitch but all three of them were really working well for me so I stayed with him and I think this helped me stay strong I just didn't have to try to throw the fastball by him all the time what about the scouting report on Baltimore I know sometimes the team gets a scouting report and the pitcher looks at it and has to make a change and what he's going to do or how he's gonna try and pitch well we got a very thorough scouting report and I I would say like all scouting reports it was pretty accurate but you also can't get away from your own style of pitching so I state mainly with the way I know I can pitch I made a couple of notes on a couple of things that I saw during the first two games but seeing a ballclub for two games doesn't really tell you a lot because Saturday they hit the long ball and then the in the second game they just hit a lot of singles so I was kind of caught in the middle I didn't know whether they'd be swinging for the long ball are trying to just hit the ball straight away and get on base so I I just tried to go over the way I have to pitch could you give me just a little quick rundown on Luke Walker tonight's pitcher yes I can of all the pitchers on our staff Luke by far has the best stuff the best natural ability he's got a fastball that he doesn't turn over to be a sinker or he doesn't cut it so much but his fastball is really live and it's liable to go either direction which makes it really tough and he's got a very explosive curveball I think some of our the one used to throw and he's he's overpowering when he's right he's just overpowers a ballclub well that's great thank you Steve good luck to you we're looking forward to seeing you possibly Saturday involved now let's go back to Joe in New York okay sandy that big Robertson talking about missing to punt that's becoming a great play of baseballs mr. bun a couple times and then pop on a right out of the ballpark those big sluggers never get the bunt sign that's the problem when they do get the bunt sign shock sets in because the bunt sign is the easiest sign in a world at Pittsburgh for example this was our bunt sign we had a letter on our camp when you covered it with the right hand we're playing the Dodgers one day first and second nobody out seventh placed hitter is up right everybody knows he should bunt our coach goes to here and go through all this which means absolutely nothing and our guy backs out of the box and gives it this no I ain't got it I ain't got it so all of a sudden our coach very deliberately goes through it again gets to here goes down slowly our guys going on he got it I ain't got it ain't got it finally the coach is standing just like this whistles goes like that and our guys going I ain't got it preacher Roe pitcher for Brooklyn says want you to bunt be you and T not that tough we'll play you know what's tough is getting a bunt sign so the pitcher can knock the guy in that's tough whether you drive a mini compact a medium-sized car or a magnificent limousine you can trust Texaco to have great gasolines exactly right for you especially designed for better performance and for cleaner air gasoline's with one of the most advanced additive packages in any gasoline you can buy visit a Texaco retailer for a great gasoline that's exactly right for you [Music] sandi we've been having some fun trying to pick the star of the game before it's even played you did a great job yesterday congratulations you pick Steve blast so what is your crystal ball say tonight left-hander but thank you Joe I think tonight I'm gonna have to go with Paul Blair with a left-hander Luke Walker pitching Blair should be in center field tonight he was last year's leading hitter in the series he hasn't appeared in it yet so uh I think Paul's due for a good night there may be another changeup a change in the Baltimore lineup I'm not sure whether booth pal or Don Buford will be playing for Baltimore this evening so you have Blair and I'll tell you I'm gonna little upset on you I've been watching the Baltimore catchers I like the way they're handling their pitchers I'm gonna pick Dobson because the catchers will lead them through all right figures that at old catcher would lay it all on the catchers if Dobson does it it's probably gonna be to his credit what are you see the ticket for game number for the World Series I don't care who the ball player is that's for him the biggest thrill I know for me 1946 to play in the World Series but only nine guys can play on each side during the World Series Sandy Koufax and I have had some fun trying to pick the star of the game when we've each made some good picks we've made some bad picks but there's one problem with that we're pretty much limited to the players and the starting lineups only nine guys on both sides and we're overlooking a lot of the guys each of these guys contributed to his team being there yet some of them may not get to play a single inning in the World Series and I guarantee that every team that ever played in the world series included guys that a spot light never got around to so sandy and I I didn't want to let this World Series pass by without giving a salute to some of the guys who not well it didn't make the headlines but I'll guarantee you they made contributions to getting the headliners into that World Series so we salute you guys and of course I'm getting set to watch the ballgame and I want to ask Wally Baloo and stuffy who you pick and walling well I think I'm going to pick Baltimore Joe how about old stuff oh yeah I think I'll go with Pittsburgh because they're playing here the friendly confines of Forbes Field well let's just sit back and watch just another ball game World Series report 71 has been brought to you by Texaco and the many thousands of Texaco retailers and distributors in all 50 states trust Texaco to have the right gasoline for you and now stay tuned following station identification for game number four of the 1971 World Series [Music] this is the Golden Triangle of Pittsburgh and there's a light on tonight the fourth time in the history of the city of Pittsburgh as all the office buildings have their lights on to celebrate the first night game in the history of the World Series here on the banks of the Monongahela the Allegheny as they join the forum the Ohio River and you're moving now into one of the most beautiful new parts in baseball free river stadium yes sir welcome to Three Rivers Stadium as NBC Sports a service of NBC News presents Game four of the 1971 World Series the American League champions the Baltimore Orioles versus a National League champions the Pittsburgh Pirates brought to you by Chrysler Corporation extra care in engineering your host tonight your local dodge dealer buy the two bladed razor the new Gillette track two twin blade cartridge shaving system and by Phillips 66 their performance company at Phillips 66 its performance that counts hi everybody I'm Kurt Goudy of NBC Sports this is Bob Prince the broadcaster the Pittsburgh Pirates and my NBC game of the week partner Tony Kubek will be roaming the stands tonight with his comments and for our first night game we have a beautiful night 72 degrees here it's warming up too well you don't need a a sweater or top coat tonight not much win and you know it seemed odd today to be standing around a hotel lobby in the afternoon waiting for the World Series at night we've had 397 World Series games played before this one all in the daytime and here we are and we're glad you could be with us all of us at NBC new fans not only across America but around the world for this historic event now let's move over here to Bob Prince of the fire so they won yesterday to get back into the series Bob you've been with the Pirates a long time you're in their Clubhouse after the game yesterday and today what's the feeling of the fire team now well Curt after two crushing defeats at the hands of the Baltimore Orioles and of course they were really crushed in Game two they felt they turned the momentum of the Baltimore Club around a little bit and gained some of their own they picked up a lot of confidence and the result is that they're raring to go in this game tonight and of course the Orioles well they seemed to win graciously and they lose graciously not much to say they had a 16 game winning streak snap and in this ballpark you're going to see here tonight the largest crowd in the history of Pittsburgh baseball yes standing room only only a thousand seats went on sale at 6 o'clock and they were gobbled up real quick the Pirates have played well at home they led the National League in home victories or the artificial turf how about the lighting here Bob that might be a bit of a problem to the center fielder particularly for Baltimore they're not used to it it's a different angle on the lights and it could cause him some trouble on balls line right directly at the centerfielder we've had a couple of changes right-hander Paul Blair goes to the outfield to start and place the Buford tonight for Baltimore a right-handed hitting catcher etchebarren will be behind the plate Danny Murtaugh has Hebner and Oliver left-handed batters in his lineup to try and get as many lefties as possible let's take a look now at the starting pitchers for tonight's game and right now you're looking at the Baltimore right-hander Pat Dobson he was acquired in an off season trade last winter from San Diego to strengthen the Baltimore depth and strengthen him he did as he became a 20 game winners Baltimore became the second team in the history of major league baseball to come up with four 20-game winner Pat Dobson for Baltimore from New Boston Texas James Luke Walker Luke Walker won 10 games and lost 8 he is not pitched since September 22nd Dobson has not started against if September 24th the two of them might be question marks tonight yes that's very possible one thing Chris I shouldn't say this Curt they don't like to try to catch this fella because he moves the ball all over the plate if he can get it over he's very tough to whip and you might see some pop up some ground balls tonight and a let's go down to Tony Kubek the first night game in World Series history one of the men responsible the Commissioner of baseball Bowie Q and mr. commissioner one of the most exciting highlights in baseball history today it is a historic first really Tony I'm excited about it I'm excited about it because I think it's going to produce my prediction is it will produce the greatest television audience for a sports event in the history of sports I look for over 60 million Americans to be tuned in I think they're out there now we have over a thousand people from the various sports media here covering the game there's been nothing like that in the history of sports it's an enormous event what about plans or future plans for World Series play well we were so satisfied that this single night game is the right thing to do the next year we're gonna have the three weekday games on at night so that you'll have Saturday and Sunday day Tuesday Wednesday Thursday night in that way the fans of America the people who work the kids in school can see the whole thing if they want to it's Commissioner a packed house here tonight what about of course this ball game tonight and I'm gonna asked you for a prediction well I don't make predictions in the World Series or almost any other time but I understand you did incident and I said you picked the Pirates in seven well I just feel that the ball memorials team is gonna have to start scoring some runs because pirates the players are starting the ball around well the Pirates can hit and Baltimore's got tremendous pitching as commissioner I usually take the position I'll be happy to see seven games and settle for whoever wins in those seven Boyd Kuhn mr. commissioner thank you so much thank you Tony let's go back upstairs all right we're going to have a starting lineups announce to you back on the scene he let the Baltimore coach George Staller take the lineup out one day after the Orioles have been in a losing streak the Orioles won 16 in a row so Weaver let his coach go out every day but they lost yesterday so Weaver number four now is back out with a lineup guard and now the ceremonial first pitch of Game four and the honor goes to one of the all-time greats of the National League Stan Musial a Hall of Famer seven-time National League batting champ 3630 hits in his career in a lifetime batting average at 331 that's his wife alongside lily and Musial and on Stan's left Bob Prince thank you very much Curt Goudy and hello again everybody now you see Luke Walker warming up here and in slow motion he's right over the top as you can see and one of the very rare things about him he cannot throw a ball straight there isn't anybody on the pirate ballclub that likes to warm him up including the catcher he does not know where that ball is going to go it can run in and away from any type of batting and normally when he's right you'll see a lot of popups strikeouts and certainly an awful lot of ground balls now as pointed out a little earlier he has pitched 12 no-hitters in high school and he attended Parrish junior college in Paris Texas from Texarkana junior college this is his ninth pro season began with the Boston Red Sox organization and on the air for 1971 he won ten and he lost date his last game he pitched on September the 22nd he worked six in he's against the cardinal and the help clinched the division championship probably interest via cleared the oils will be taking against him he has the history of control problems yes he definitely has that now here's one of manager Earl Weaver's thank you and enjoy the viewing Paul Blair Earl Weaver having made a bit of a switch moving Blair a fine outfielder into center field they will now stop this game and give this ball to the Commissioner of baseball Bowie Kuhn and [Music] that later will be then enshrined in the Hall of Fame the Commissioner baseball now receiving that baseball and that will be enshrined in Hall of Fame where Ken Smith resides in Cooperstown New York the first pitch on the first night game of the world series brought to you on NBC 1-1 to Blair ran away from him a ball Blair has one hit in the World Series when in defensively the other day I picked up a set [Applause] I'll tell you when water has it going he has a snake coming in at that place but the ballplayers say very sneaky ball moves all the time the outfield around to the left for Paul Blair on the regular-season hit ten home runs ball to strike there Clementi is playing about 90 feet off the line there you see the alignment in the infield in the outfield Stargell the deep left it is 340 down both lines here at Three Rivers Stadium 385 in the slots and 410 straightaway ball off this synthetic turf really comes off quickly two balls two strikes [Music] we just got a piece of it in there you saw that ball running on him and absolutely no wind tonight the black hanging lip at centerfield so the breeze is not a factor right now in this game there you see Old Glory two balls two strikes to Paul Blair batted 262 for the regular season and truly one of the great center fielders in baseball now the way and there you saw him hit over the ball bouncing and foul off to the left Luke Walker Kirk got off a great line a couple of years ago before he went on to win 15 games somebody interviewed him and he said tell my mother I'm alive and well but not pitching in Pittsburgh then he went on to win 15 games ball two strike two and it's a base hit into the slide and left-center Oliver coming on and so Blair continues to about a thousand in the series his second hit in as many at-bats he had a curve ball now the very fine shortstop of the Baltimore Orioles mark Belanger batting 200 in the World Series on the regular season went for 266 no homers 35 runs batted in then quite a juggling in the lineup with regard to batting order vilandra was batting eighth now up to the number two spot bounces off the right side cash a beautiful play I can't make it - getting over to get to the ball this is score that they said Kash got to the ball he was trying to shovel the ball from his glove through his short style he's there but as he got the ball out of his glove it slipped away from him that's scored a base that cash did a remarkable job getting to the ball to keep it from going through so the Orioles have a quick threat already top of the first-inning so a 2 on here is merv rettenmund batting at 231 one home run and four runs batted in in the series you saw flash there on the screen his average for the year ball you'll see a lot of balls pop in and out of the myth of many sandy and tonight as long as Walker is on and there is early activity in the pirate bullpen Bruce Kison any Vargo of Butler Pennsylvania does a lot of work he's the plate umpire with the George Union Republic which is a school for wayward boys and it's been a very worthwhile endeavor does that of course in the offseason one ball one strike directly a month pal one and two an Eritrean for the base said obviously your honor hi sharp these two will be tonight with her control Walker pitch last September 22nd Dobson started on September 24 that's quite a layoff [Music] Redman being played very definitely to pull now all up the first-base side on this synthetic turf is Walker retrieves the ball there the balls roll very true and normally if you get a pretty good shot out over second or short it'll go all the way to the wall and the outfielders here run to surround the ball not cut it off they always play on only one artificial surface in the infield in the American League that's at Comiskey Park Chicago they say they like this artificial circle one ball two strikes two on nobody out top of the first and no score bouncer for the hole and Hernandez Flags it down and he has no play but he saves a run from the whole side of shortstop Fernandez getting it on into second why drain here by Hernandez this ball really takes off like a jackrabbit on his part artificial service throw too late at second base for the attempted force and now the Orioles have the bases loaded nobody out and their cleanup batter Frank Robinson up and Robinson batting at 583 in the series has two home runs and both of his home runs have come with nobody aboard but now with the bases loaded the Pirates will play the infield back he's had seven base hits in 12 at-bats I feel necessarily buried even around to the left in his last six Series games three this year in three last he's had 13 base hit as far as the other runners knew about will away the ruling here the ball got away from Sam Ganz jumped into the lead 1 to nothing that's been scored a pass ball by the three official scorers a low inside pitch that skipped off the myth of Sandy and it wasn't an easy chance but the score is figure that he should have handled it now they're going to put Robinson on with first base open [Applause] well this started out when Paul Blair hit what appeared to be a hanging curveball for the base set and then Belanger picked up the base of a second base side of the diamond when cash attempting to shovel the ball along in order to turn and is covering there to get the out and did not now here's another tough man butch Robinson batting 500 in the series five hits in two at-bats bases loaded again one run in and nobody out in the top of the first one ball no strikes I apply into shallow center I love it coming up tagging at third is Blanchard and he's going to try to come in under a strong throw and he's in there and everybody moves up a notch [Applause] so Robinson makes it to nothing on a long flattest Center Belanger scores the second run give butch Robinson a run batted in move rettenmund over to third after the catch and Robinson up to second base and now the only left-hand batter in the Baltimore Atlanta stands in in Boog Powell he's been playing a series with a hand and a half cutting away normally does he has some torn tissue in the back of the right hand it is flaking his suede now all batting only a toe 83 just inside a ball boy I was waiting here - nothing in the top half of the first inning [Music] of all the parts are not shifting as much but now Hernandez has moved in a little bit behind second he was over on the third-base side a second now you see the shift there with a kind of to an hour they've moved a little bit figuring Powell have a better pitch to pull [Music] that balls hit very deep in the center Oliver going way back and he's there and that'll score another round and now coming over to third on the play will be Frank Robinson they make the throw but he's in there [Applause] I wonder where to hit that one with both hands healthy they might have had to flag it down somewhere west of the Allegheny and Bill Virdon is coming out they didn't like that last blast by Powell and they're going to get the young right-hander now Bruce Kison in well Bruce Kison is you'll recall Kurt had a very rocky time of it in Game two there's a break in the action here at Pittsburgh and the score Baltimore free Pittsburgh nothing here in the first inning [Music] [Applause] [Music] and now a word on behalf of Major League Baseball [Music] [Music] broski sim is about six feet five he says he weighs 185 pounds there are those who doubt that he fenced a final game in the not the final game but a big clinching game out there for a victory against the San Francisco Giants when he came in and relief pitched four and two thirds innings allowing only two hits striking out three he's first outing against Baltimore was indeed a very rough for me walked a couple of batters it's the wrong time for him and the Pirates the bases were loaded at the time twenty-one years of age born and lives in Pasco Washington he was ten and one for Charleston when the fires brought him up and the major-league season six and five watch him throw there at the whiplash throw reminds a little bit of yield Blackwell's delivery about to say that sidearm stuff can be rough on right-handers he goes to Dave Johnson batting to 500 in the series and here's a bouncer to Hebner at third onto Robertson the inning is over and so at the middle of the first hitting miss score is Baltimore free the Pirates coming to bat [Music] yeah yeah [Music] [Music] so Baltimore jumps on top and now we'll set the Pirates defensively for the Baltimore defensively that's merv rettenmund in left field Paul Blair in Center Frank Robinson in right field at third base Brooks Robinson shortstop mark belanger Dave Johnson at second base Boog Powell at first base behind the plate Andy etchebarren and on the mound is Pat Dobson who won 20 in lost eight now he like Luke Walker has not had a lot of work and his last outing 28th of September when he worked two innings in relief against Boston his only relief appearance by the way of the year he goes to dead cash he's had two hits and 13 at-bats about a 289 on the season ball [Applause] dave is a thinking man's hitter outfield plays him shallow around the right by one and one Dobson throws a fastball a slider a curveball and his changeup is a palm ball he has four different pitches ball one strike one Oreos lead three nothing as cash leads off for the Pirates in the first inning ball to Patrick Edward Dobson born in Buffalo New York now lives in Durham North Carolina his 12th professional season began in Detroit by the way in the organization their ball free and by the way has allowed no runs in his last 11 inning three balls and a strike they put your mind [Applause] [Music] now Richie Hebner batting 333 in the World Series has one moment and three runs batted in game in a losing cause he can pull axle ball and they play him way around to right he was the first player here at the ballpark tonight he arrived at 5 o'clock and took special batting practice unhappy that he didn't start yet today but Fagin who replaced you did a good job one ball and no strikes now on your split screen that's cash at first base I pop up in the infield and shortstop Belanger settling under [Applause] one out [Applause] [Applause] [Music] here is Pittsburgh hero Roberto Clemente [Applause] and World Series games took 11 years to get that string going 10 in 19 1961 for seven games and free thus far here Curt I think it's great that the fans not only in this country around the world can watch his fella play nobody plays the game harder every department strike now as you see here with Boog Powell holding the cash and Johnson playing a little farther to his right Clemente has a big hole on his favorite side of the diamond right field they just continue to pitch him outside and somehow or other he continues to hit it about a free 40 clip one in one [Applause] he always looks like he slept in a bad mattress of pillow he's always tricking that neck around as if he had a bad neck matter of fact he claims he sleeps with his eyes open just said he can't sleep he can hear the slightest tick and he's wide awake one ball one strike [Applause] they're that pombe wanted to Willie Stargell on deck pirate dugout on the first base side that's a walk-in dugout one ball and two strikes cash leading off first with Boog Powell holding their Orioles lead three nothing one out here in the first now back took a little off that fastball left I'm Curt pretty tough to fool too many on a change by the way and it was a high pitch the Pirates were ninth in their league and receiving walks they're a swingin team they're not looking for watch they come out of that dugout swinging and the Baltimore pitching staff with the stingiest in the American League and giving up walks so many while he's played way around to right can pull ax the ball up to left feel sad he gets his pitch he can take it down that way in a hurry one ball two strikes and watching carefully who's uh well then he has a habit of just going right out over the plate with his body and watching it right into the catcher's mitt two balls two strikes one out and one on the Orioles lead three nothing in the bottom of the first and that time he picks him up on a strikeout and that's the second out of the inning first strikeout of the game and now what a schedule [Applause] now we see Davey Johnson playing a deep second of him he's back on the synthetic turf the app field around the right there you see the infield the way it is over shifted and belanger's not quite behind second but he's way over ball Dajjal has had quite a few home runs to the opposite field there is no Park that can hold him when he gets his pitch [Applause] turned that one over one in a while somewhere along the line Bob our director Harry Coyle might get that third tier that upper tier in right field where he's at to the longest shots in the still young history of this park a ball and a strike to Stargell there's a base hit the right-center field it may be in the gap it is it's gonna go in there in conscious thought [Applause] ball is bobbled in right field by Robinson but I don't believe it would have made any difference the artificial services scoots right through Frank Robinson couldn't play the carom cleanly and finally it's the center fielder while Blair who picks it up and fires in but Dave cash has already into the dugout with a score the Pirates run the scoreboard and starkel's at second and al Oliver in there as we're back to live action it's ball one again he's batting 100 in mysterious three-to-one now Baltimore leading and this could be a real big gust going ball game now will be 25 years old tomorrow one ball one strike well as you and I were talking earlier Kirk at the head of this broadcast anything hit on a line in between those outfielders they don't run to cut it off they run to just catch up to it one ball one strike ball two [Applause] Stargell there's Robertson on deck Stargell now seems to be getting back in the groove again and if he is it's going to be a big lift with the Pirates there he is out at second base on a double foul the way you know Kurt the Pirates all year long have been a great two out scoring ballclub and they show some early signs here tonight they normally get their runs in clusters they hit a lot of back-to-back home runs two balls two strikes all three [Applause] the Orioles with Dobson pitching and perhaps Curtis because of the slow step that swung their outfield out of the leg most ball clubs in the National League do not play all over the pull this much now they're set over there about three or four strides to right-center and right-field now the way [Applause] and look at Paul he's almost on the first-base line that's Stargell he drove in the pirates room sizzling double to right-center field three into two Oliver bow back he's hanging tough Dobson is pitching him inside though Oreos know that that's why they're playing all over more at the pull hitter [Music] there you see the manner in which Boog Powell is playing in both Johnson well over to his own left at second base two men are away it's three to one the Orioles have bleed now ball that time and get it right off the end of the back just got the lacquer on it I'll Oliver you see two bills there they all wear their protected cap on top and then underneath of course their cloth cap pirates will keep that protective cap on their heads while always on the base pass ball three and strike two to Oliver start deleting off second base and a foul ball [Applause] you doubt about this being the largest crowd and what a fill it is to join Kurt Goudy in NBC and sending you the first night game in World Series history from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania here on NBC three balls two strikes step off the mound by Dobson Dobson holds the baseball in his grub will make his grip now and it's a blue get out into shallow centerfield and they'll not get [Applause] [Music] go to second despina to [Applause] here's a new trend in baseball the artificial service watch the bounce on this Texas leaguer that drops in normally on a grass out feel that would just dunk there but look at the high bounce and Paul Blair not used to playing on this surface the ball bounced over his head and that gives Oliver an extra base it has scored a double pass Earl Weaver who's come on the oil now are getting their bullpen busy and it's a 3-2 game the Orioles came up with three on the top of the first the Pirates are come right back with two [Applause] Dave Leonhard is the right-hander and grant Jackson the left-hander [Applause] the cost hurt the other advantage the Pirates had there with two out da Joe could run with less than two out he would have had to hold up on that one for fear the ball would be catchable and that is part of the break of the game and again the Pirates are showing their to outrun scoring ability as big Bob Robertson and I suppose you know by now he missed the bunt sign yesterday and yet a three-run homer into the dirt ball one he didn't miss one punch sign he missed two Franko Shaq the third-base coach gave him to bunt signs and he didn't read either one we had a good excuse he said why would you ever ask me to bunt I've never bunted in my life and I was over nine and I had to get a hold of something one ball no strikes [Applause] ball two well if you pitch this fellow there's Franco so yet do you pitch this robertson away he'll take you right out to right field you get him in the wheelhouse and the fans start to duck in left field two balls and no strikes and he found it at the feet of etchebarren you know those two runners on Bob when he hit the home run Clemente knew there was something wrong the Robertson mist was signed and he he was going to call timeout or ask for time and money Irvin oh the baseball Commissioner's Office is here back in the 1950 he was on base got something in his eye asked for time just as the pitch was released the umpire of second call timeout and whitey locked and hit a home mama didn't town and if Clemente had got the time and the pitch had been released Roberts would have lost a homer yesterday two balls and a strike the man is Oliver with a double out at second he wheeled on that one didn't he two and two pirate said that happened to them but a long time ago Frank Frisch was the manager part said a shortstop Frankie Zack he'd called time and Ziggy says called it nobody heard him and Jim Russel hit a homerun then struck out two to get slowly off the first base side Dobson to Boog Powell but the Buccos come back with two runs on two hits and leave a runner and at the end of one the score Baltimore three and the Pirates to [Applause] [Music] [Music] what do you think how do you like it [Applause] on the left of your screen is Billy hunter born in Punxsutawney Pennsylvania known throughout the world as groundhog city and senior Baltimore coach you need to his Adrienne on the right George Staller born in Rutherford Heights Pennsylvania now lives in Harrisburg the Commonwealth capital man he's in the minors for 14 years and I think that pitching coach George Bamberger must be looking in Kirk a longtime friend of yours and a great coach for the Baltimore Orioles that's right he suffered a heart attack he's in a Baltimore hospital recovering nicely they say and watching the World Series game tonight so the Orioles are in the World Series without their pitching coach who helped develop that staff of four 20-game winners the first staff and the majors to win to have four 20-game winners since the white sox of 1921 incurred in your game of the week coverage did not Bamberger predict the baltimore and a half for 20 game winner he predicted it early in the season in April right on the nose he call it here's Andy etchebarren in his first appearance in the World Series of 1971 batted 279 homers 29 runs batted in the pitcher is Bruce Kison in relief of Luke Walker a ball walkers login two-thirds of an inning three runs three hits no strikeouts and one walk this young man determines that he'll be married on the 17th of October and he'd like to be late for his wedding bouncer down to cash see how fast that ball got out there on to Robertson one out [Applause] Kurt was talking about it I'm sure over in Baltimore young Bruce Kison and his bride-to-be announced their wedding plans as the 17th of October and found out about a week later that games seven if it goes that far and be in Baltimore and buckos would like to make it go seven and let heesun worry about the wedding later this is Pat Dobson batted 110 on the year right on the corner now key sim has a good riding fastball and a wicked sinker and a ball that runs in many times on right-hand batters strike two last year and internationally he hit 28 batters wonder how it feels to be 21 pitching in the first night game of World Series history of all well I'll tell you one thing I think he might have been nervous in Baltimore that perhaps now as a disappear one ball two strikes one out Baltimore leading three two in the top of the second alloy there was that sneaking pitch there's Danny Murtaugh from Chester Pennsylvania banjo as we call him he won the World Series in 1960 where the Buccos and here 11 years later trying for another all is excited yeah he really jumps in here honey one ball two strikes goodnight CSUN has his first strikeout and our TOI in the Baltimore 2nd inning there is Earl Weaver and you can't say too much about him Curt Goudy a magnificent manager with a fantastic managing record he's taking the Orioles three years in a row to at least a hundred wins and still has a 1 - manager of the Year award in the American League Paul Blair who's singled in the first inning and scored ball one to him I had 10 home runs on the regular-season Dalloway [Music] Paul Blair not Brooks Robinson was the leading hitter to 1970 World Series with a 474 average time has been called and that was called by Blair like to look at that baby face Kirk 21 years of aid turn to he's even shaking off the science tonight you ask him if he weighs 185 pounds and he'll challenger he looks like a stick then he he said he built that body without lifting away ball two strike two little bloop off the end of the bat might drop it will watch the mini now get tripped by it also and throw back in the second and Blair has his third hit and as many at-bats in the World Series hit it right off the end of the bat and looped it in there and Clemente at that time obviously was full think Clemente had ideas of making a diving shoestring grab for this and then at the last two or three feet had to give up the ball bounced over his head that's the second one on the artificial turf that has bounced over a charging outfielder and it's a double for Paul Blair then some peculiar base hits thus far the oils have had two infield singles in a bloop double and the parts have had a bloop double mark Belanger who picked up an infield single in the first inning Orioles lead 3 to 2 here in the second inning two out no balls in the strike to sneaky fast dirtiest quick yes and coming in from third base these right-handers give on him Milland your chokes on that bad about three or four inches you can see the end of the bat handle hanging down Optima Bobby Robertson at first wants it metal stole the Orioles away no runs one hit no errors and one left and we go now to the bottom of the second inning in the score Baltimore three and the Pirates to [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] Franco siaka third Johnstown Pennsylvania Donna Leppard at first pace this telecast is presented by the authority of Major League Baseball and is intended solely for the private non-commercial use of our audience any publication retransmission or other use of the pictures descriptions or accounts of this game without the express written consent of the Commissioner of baseball is prohibited that beep beep you hear in the background is form a nice and gain he's known as the roadrunner here batting at 3 1 9 on the season jammed on the pitch down to Brooks Robinson Boog Powell and one striding in now when your picture is Jackie Hernandez obtained from Kansas City on an offseason trade with pitcher Bob Johnson in which the Pirates sent Freddy Patek Jerry Mae and Bruce Dale Kenton their Hernandez was not to have started tonight but Jean alley came up with an enemy strike Baltimore leads three two one out none on in the bottom of the second inning it's broadcast coming to you first night game in the history of the World Series and being seen all over the world here on NBC in Taiwan Canada Puerto Rico Venezuela Colombia Bermuda Virgin Islands Dominican Republic Hawaii Alaska Mexico and of course our US bases in Germany Korea Manila Panama one ball one strike her Anandi's had ideas of bunting down the third-base when he's going up against the best in the game of charging the bunt and making that off-balance throw to first and eBooks robinson on the corner of autumn two strikes now you see the pirate bench and that's Billy burden there I'm getting ready to bat of course Bruce Kison - - we pause briefly for station identification this is the NBC television network ball two strike two pull slowly to third foul [Applause] there's Brooks Robinson man whom there is no Homer made tremendous third baseman for the Baltimore he was a little irritated tonight they had some write-ups in the Pittsburgh paper that Robinson wasn't going as well to his right as he did last year a couple of shots were hit by yesterday he said those balls were by me I didn't have a chance for him I'd die but they were gone yes they certainly were somebody apparently eluded the fact he'd been on the banquet circuit a little too much ball two strike two and there's a drive toward left center and right at Paul Blair fans tonight are watching probably the best defensive centerfielder in baseball Paul Blair [Applause] gisun after being called up from charleston made 31 plate appearances with two base hits for the Pirates he bats right-handed and hits a foul down the first base side drifting towards the first base box deep sit out of play strike one the late swings of Keith daaamn in the pirate second today they trail by run treated to the dumpsters in Baltimore Thompson extending the arms concentrating on the side he delivers on one strike outside corner he snapped at that corner again with a breaking ball so he moves rapidly ahead of keeps and on two occasions spread the feet right to the front of the box Mayo to attend whoa [Applause] Baltimore management naturally feels they stopped in 120 that they had a great offseason deal with San Diego when they picked up Thompson plus dude so once you deliver a oh call chief strike to keep [Applause] sure and a future strike three a fat fall film I poured right down the crew to the admiring people and we were talking at the last half depending how the key issue of an entire third world series game was brought up just by chance and that was the fact that one of the writers out Danny Murtaugh just Nabin asked um did you ever think about giving Robertson Robertson a one fine and in that tactical situation it would have been the logical thing to do in the Murtagh just matter of fact they said well as a matter of fact I did give him the bunt sign there was a shot pause from among the 50 or so media people in the room at some it said you got to be serious about that he said yes I am he says that's it we came to bunt fine he simply missed it somebody says well are you gonna find him and then the veritas thought about that one for us as well I don't think so under those conditions somebody says well how about giving him a bonus Meritage that possibly so then somebody says did you talk with him about it and the doctor after work yes we talked about it a little bit he said what'd you say to him well I said you fouled it up he said I guess you're right coach I guess I did follow it up Bert I answered all those questions and Robertson waited off to the side to be asked questions along with Steve Blass who had limited the oil to three yet so it was quite an interesting news conference following Game three of the World Series when it was discovered that a home run was hit on a missed fun sign to get this burg a victory in Game three of the World Series let's pause right now for station identification this is the American forces radio and television Herman a apart yes in the Canal Zone this is the Southern Command Radio Network 790 and 1420 in your dial Pittsburgh at Three Rivers Stadium and in Baltimore serve it'll be mer Brenton on Frank Robinson and Brooks Robinson against right-handed reliever Bruce Keitha hastened to retinol on strike outside corner [Applause] Sgt laughs just pulled over George left again threatened but most of Retton months power is up the middle and two power alleys change-up is in one ball and one strike chieftain shield ret mom that big off-speed motion and he went to tiger at companies one ball that one strike Brett mom had an infield base hit to the hole it's Shore to the first day and scored a run Baltimore lead three to one water way outside as rettenmund began to check his swing on the breaking ball she balls in one stride [Applause] greteman starting off the top of the third on two on he looks attractive it was bent to his knees to the upside edge of the plate the count of two balls and two strikes Ratman right now is four base hits and fourteen World Series trips the graduate of Ball State against Keaton - and - blowing away full count now three balls and she strike rettenmund ended the regular season strong strong indeed with a nine-game hit streak also on the last road trip that de la debates into Cleveland Korean shoe here's a chopper over the mouth back at second base the shortstop Hernandez along now recommen has good speed down the first base side so the combination of the chopper and jeeps behind the bag Hernandez I had a hurry of throw to get rent on five step one gun top of the third Baltimore Leafs good for three to two and here's Frank Robinson he was walked intentionally by starter Luke Walker in the three-run Baltimore [Applause] the big day in Frank Robinson's 1971 season night in Baltimore the 19th of September when he hit his 500th over huh she bit off [Applause] at 5-under home run by the way back in Baltimore came as part of a doubleheader matter fact the first trip to the plate that Frank Robinson made in Game one he got number 499 then in the ninth inning of Game two got that magic number 500 he's down to Keith Attilan to the right-hander whines delivers snaps it up dirt outside one ball and two strikes speaking of home runs Frank Robinson with Baltimore's home run later 20 home runs 99 runs batted in he has eight World Series home runs including two so far in the series one away bases empty top of the third the next stitch a check swing foul straight back so he fails of all in keep track between Jason and Frank up [Applause] Frank Robinson camera in this series have come at the expense of Steve Platt and doc Ellis as a matter of fact as flash gave up all the three base hit the yesterday here Frank Robinson a two of those three bases one and two [Applause] three ripped up by the plate umpire chieftain has his second strikeout in relief coming on for starter Walker in the third today three to two with two down in the top of the third here's Brooks Robinson sent out a long fly ball for a sacrifice in the first inning to drive in a run well he started him off with a lazy cheese ball [Applause] much sangeun behind the plate right now very low crash presents an excellent target fouled away every manager watches pitching staff to pitch low they love a catcher who gets down like sangeun and makes them pitch low and can handle low pitches they look for this in a catcher and the way he crouches there you'd think that would force your dues hamstring muscles and make him a slow runner he's anything but that Kirk the fastest running catcher in the game one ball one strike like to [Applause] this kid looks good yes he does looks like he'd like to well enough to miss the wedding if necessary Sunday next you didn't want to hit that one in peace and filled his position to rabbits in the inning is over so it's three up and three down oils and we go to the bottom of the third and they lead the Pirates by the score of three to two [Applause] [Music] [Music] okay I think my problem may be when I look to Kurt as I'm turning away a little bit blue I'll try to watch that I'll try to watch it but I love you later Roger you in left-field now here is part of the interior of this beautiful pre River Stadium going down the right-field sign it is 340 down both lines 385 left center right center 410 straightaway there is an inn that is about 15 feet short of the back wall and as you can see this place is packed Dave cash he walked in the first inning and scored a run ball [Applause] notice how far in front of the plate when we get the shot of Dave cash he is right up on top of it ball two [Applause] [Music] there it is again good foot in front of the plate [Music] well series to my 12:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time in a pregame report followed by the game at 12:45 right here from Pittsburgh on NBC ball three [Applause] [Music] three and two little difference of opinion there between the D Vargo and the matter day of cash bounced down to the shortstop Belanger Boog Powell and one away in the pirate third Baltimore three in the Pirates two here's what she heavier he pops up the short in the first inning you'll see that his right hand is right over the plate he would think you could Jam him they said the rack Center [Applause] though Hebner gets the third hit off Dobson and with Baltimore leading free to the Roar is for Roberto Clemente [Applause] Bob you mentioned Flaminius it safely in all ten of his World Series games Hank Bauer the Yankees holds the record for consecutive hitting streak in the world series Hank it's safely 17 World Series games in a row hey I feel around to the right on Clemente the gap is still off the first base side now with pal holding the Hebner [Applause] long drive to right field slicing and it's a dog and Clemente is going down to argue with a right-field umpire John rice and there goes the first base coach Don leopard they thought that ball hit the foul pole for a home run that's Lippert the first base umpire arguing with rice Clemente when he crossed first base ran down the line and he's standing arms akimbo looking down just fouls at the right-field umpire John rides but man he's been hitting those drives at deep right-field all during history watch this now here's our rerun drives it deep the ball starts to slice [Applause] yeah I don't know what do you think Bob but the way the ball bounced it hit the pole the thing is the ball hit something out there and it's an unusual thing Kurt if the ball is slicing and is fouled you'd think it would go to the right it bounced back in you'd have to look at it again one more time with that ball bounce look at it and it comes back out in fair territory that's a tough call [Applause] I'll tell you another thing Kurt our bullpen is absolutely for circ out there they couldn't believe it there is that foul pole out there it is not painted on the wall that's a that's an iron pipe there you see it and the ball then bounced back in fair territory rather than off to the right into the pirate bullpen I don't think we could really call it on that rerun I don't think so either Kurt it was close as fuzz on a tics ear though I'll tell you that [Applause] the Pirates of course are going to lose the argument and when this is all over it's just a foul strike off the batter Roberto Clemente that's bird unhappy Danny Murtaugh he nearly swallowed that job back II on that one now a fan has jumped out of the stands an irate fan is being escorted back in he's bad that's Hebner at first [Applause] and from any that gun there back there on-deck circle to get his bat a crowd on his feet still unhappy at the right-field umpire John rice had a very difficult call to make and that drive down the right-field line in his defense to Kirk on a ball hit like that as far down the line as the years he has to turn very quickly he doesn't get the chance to really get a good beat on well it's still free - to Baltimore with Hebner at first base no balls and one strike and we've had our first real serious rhubarb [Applause] [Applause] and there's a base hit to right and heaven it will go to second and halt and hairstyle and many continues to play brilliantly in every department in this Earl Weaver yes Flaminia again he just come up with his sixth head of the series look at him that leg [Applause] reaching it outside kitchen stroking it the right field five of his second inning when it found it then bounced over player dead for a few backer this court Darko and make it free to do it is still free to view here in a comforter field third and a colander a left hand cleaner off the plate [Applause] serious games all holder three on the RBI the other night by Oliver Hefner in four seconds a day goes from corner to corner he's now at third with two out at the other corner Thursday to the elbow foul [Applause] [Applause] strike one to Bob Robert the young pirate sensation out of the state of Maryland they thing of Baltimore ballclub from the state of Maryland here in the third with Oliver bird and many a third and two out and a brief read it line in the Czech 20 round balls to third-base foul line fielded by damu he throws out the check for the final stranded at the corner at the end of three games in now Baltimore three and Pittsburgh brewskis of the young 21 year old a purposeful Washington long trip with Mattie champion the arm too broke to a three nothing lead in the first inning and that leads ship to any four to by the pond to the bottom of the first and I'll Oliver's just single of the tying run at 3 3 is we go to the top of the fourth inning it'll be fooled maybe John for that Andy etchebarren come on is giving up a double a looping ball that bounced over the head of the directed off his sacrifice fly toward Oreo run in that three-run first and the Orioles have not scored since they're in a 3-3 Lanka change on to this to think that chief than when he did come on of a burgeoning to relieve Walker he must have had some he had those funny butterflies moving around in that stomach but I'm sure a little bit more confident go on strike deal off-speed again outside one ball and one strike to town if there has been any steady diet of pattern workmanship to pal it has been off-speed pitches by the pirate kitchen core ethers one one deal ball is low two balls and a strike Sal one hit in 12 at that in his fourth game of the World Series did not go to his first run did sacrifice fly for out number two of a Thursday Court retina keep some chewy at the top of the normally you talk about nail-biting time late in the ball game I guess in a World Series at tail fighting time anytime especially right now in a 3-3 tie - Robert - the first Acker he stood in relief retires occurred three many things Johnson for the third out of the first inning then etchebarren adopted for the first two killings in the second before the two-bagger by Blair Sinclair t-bagging in order he is set down phalange retinol on frank robinson robinson and now pal to begin the top of the board Dave Johnson [Applause] Johnson an extra-base power right hand player ground it out there to first in the first tonight inside ball one ball and one strike to jump in 1969 Thompson that actuated last year 281 this year 282 the left consistency letter hi tried to twist down now can't keep them inside fish turn down the and with it in the back ride about letter I around his number 15 so Johnson is the one-out baserunner hit by key spoon with one gun in the top of the fourth and here's Andy edge their minor league days for a major league days ed Sheeran just finished off his finest season with an average of chief tentative dope nine homers drove over 29 Iran saying he infects the outside tire here's a ground ball to the shortstop [Applause] for free [Applause] in the middle of the night Baltimore three and three [Applause] dr. ago is this bird had to on the bird with Geron and three on the third when they died it up and now Sandhya Dirks off the bottom of the fourth day and that'll active a Baltimore bullpen again and as it was activated and both the dirt and the 32 that is the blender fire toothpick building shirt Jackie Hernandez he lined to center declare the second in a game being occurred breaking ball about the Pirates have been by Huebner for mente Stargell of care of Oliver and both drove over Iran and here at Sam game to begin the bottom of report of the night mashing of a bit to left center its fall one no strikes to the right hand flames of Hernandez bending it the way [Applause] got a good break after the park [Applause] shilling is nothing new for Sandia steps away for bag tags and come back ground ball hit right at dumpster and he didn't throw to anybody he knew he had to stand in a rundown halfway between third and second so Justin did not composure he just a live defensive thing he ran right at Sandia and made sangeun make a move and when he went back George second Thompson talked to vilandra who made the belt I said so Hernandez at the base runner at first one is out and a picture pink square turns Munson mrs. strike one a snake breaking ball to the outside corner and Kievan trying to bunt was over the breaking ball jefes now has asked the plate umpire I believe it are go for extra time to double-check with sign flashed his way by third base coach you see a trans were in the bottom of the fourth inning right now the most thrilling World Series game of 1971 stopped him with a high-torque the first base full foul off the bag to the outfield side against the lead of Hernandez one out score tied three of these he finished up in the second inning and look at strike three he spread the feet again though keep them try to advance earn an Dez into a scoring truck is now behind dolphin it on to the Buccos on deck man is leadoff batter Dave cash Oriole bullpen staying active here in the bottom of the fourth inning the left-hander grant Jackson plus the right-hander Dave Leonard they were warming in the first inning as well as the third and they're back up again here and they bottom of the for the night one thing that Dobson has against he said he's got a lot of strike zone big growth he's in his tall 64 he's gets the repel delivers breaking ball is low one ball and two strikes he kept it down and low and inside one ball two strikes a runner aboard at first base and one out in shallow right frank robinson is shallow right center Blair pulled a bit to left center at threaten on site at third Brooks Robinson for one achoo planks to cross the letters and down the arm of third-base coach Frank o ciock on the other side the pirate lieutenant Don leopard watching the lead closely of Jackie Hernandez as will Thompson from the mound for first baseman foul Fernandez gets off easily man casein keep riding at the count of two balls as he strikes the clouds greeted optin with two runs and chew it to the first inning after baltimore baptized to knock down a walker with three runs and three hits in the first inning the fuckos may be trying to be a little bit too fine with pinpoint control his three balls and two strikes against Keith Hernandez with as much of a lead as he can get will you're on [Applause] [Applause] giving up his second law and for the second time in this ball game Earl Weaver is marching to the mouth if he wants to go to his bullpen he's at Jackson warming for quite a spell he's also had Leonard warming for quite as though at the moment weaver has not made an indication he has marched turret lay between catcher ed sheeran and pitcher Thompson Weaver with his hands right on us if John within the edge of their and also joining and conversing with Pat Dustin and slapping his hand the filming what Weaver is trying to do is convince Dobson that he must concentrate and love fruits right Weaver has made his decision for the moment he is staying with Johnson he makes another that's been here in the fourth inning he must go to his bullpen we're left Asha's walking store and Walker to just walk birthday and one gone on the pirate for cash strokes the foul back of the plate strike one talk about youngsters who you know enjoy baseball and perhaps as teenagers say look forward someday to becoming professional ballplayers I'm sure you have to put cash in that category because when he was a youngster many years ago on a teenager in Utica his mother used to take long bus ride to Ebbets Field to watch the Dodgers play [Applause] one striker two cash here's a ground ball rolling out towards third and it goes down and way down the line - took a big cut and without in front of a Thompson fish stop - new is two strikes on topic Eason is now the same way to leadoff man - you don't the pirate baserunners Hernandez at second and put your teeth in at first [Applause] Baltimore got three in the top of the first day and hammered out Walker then Keith and shut the door Baltimore and it's late cut apart by the Pirates who scored two in the bottom of the first and Italy it's for offer up sided they're threatening again here in the Forex you on one out which is strike pitch with Dan curb is a little bit outside of - junk just wing that finger on the bat he has a finger on the trigger and then just loosen his up off the trigger one ball and two strikes to dave cash - shows chouet and 14 at-bats in this world series Chiefs in a runner at first base not health eye-pal he's got the windbreaker on to keep the right arm or second veins Hernandez with only one away tops to the cache one and two breaking balls laughter short [Applause] she tried to take out Johnson with a shoulder high move rolled over and here's Johnson pointing right at Keitha so the Oriole did a twin killing go Andrew to Johnson to Powell they got keys in it seconds barreled and chest and shoulder high to Johnson he got rid of his DoublePlay throw to Powell at first base at the end important Baltimore three and Pittsburgh three we hit the top of the fifth inning he's ready to throw the top Thompson and here's Bill it up all right Jim keeps an eye on Dopson so far I've looked at each other one dumps and looked at strike free from the right-hander keeps it in a second and Dobson blair belanger game for the 1971 World Series top of the fifth inning and a 3-3 tie [Applause] Chason with the arms drape down by the side and the slender right-hander has his signs from sangeun sidearm breaking ball [Applause] absolute down two strikes accuse me Baltimore three runs for it Pittsburgh three runs and 16 ok on to swing a bow right off the end of doctors [Applause] Bruce uge jisun born in Pasco Washington and still resides in a Pacific Northwest [Applause] stop settling on that back behind the right shoulder check the swing and fouls it off to the right of home plate so it's still a holding count of going to the pirate outfield Stargell and lived Oliver in center and Clemente and ride our playing dumps in street away the shortstop Hernandez chases but we outside of all the two strikes deduction he's in a relief of left-handed starter Luke Walker has hit a batter fan too and given up a base hit he once you stop soon strikes him out so if the 21 year old keeps in his third strike out in relief he saws off destiny now he'll face Blair who's at a perfect night and a perfect world series Blair with a base hit in the first inning left center scored Iran has he robbed him at a fastball by saying again he doubled with two away in a second Blair has gone to left center and to right center with his two hits tonight batting with one god he twists around loses his balance on the high Pike pitch one ball and no strikes the probables in Game five tomorrow afternoon Nelson brows for Pittsburgh Dave McNally for Baltimore strike outside corner one ball and one strike we're about it in the second inning we told you about his only base hit in the 66 World Series a home run to win Game three he also did a great job of the glove it's in the dirt and out two balls and one strike and I would guess that the Dodger at 66 who most remembers Paul Blair would be channel of fever as Blair just played robber against a left centerfield Finch Drive viola fever to preserve turned out to be a one nothing Baltimore victory these two balls and one strike against kesa jason has been on the scene in relief since the first inning to it one now his shirt fell off to the right [Applause] Chason as we told you is a sign arming right-hander likes to challenge it earth as you just challenged Claire right there chip chewy the inside and Blair has depreciated self on one hand to keep from completely falling down he's in de Canas side Armour because as a teenager he would sit on the elbow and the arm causing considerable pain down down throwing side arm II didn't have anything free and to get out the fender field of five walls being chased by Oliver he's on the warning track [Applause] where is out number two the top of the fifth inning in a 3/3 Oriole pirate fourth game [Music] baltimore leads in this world series to victories to on they won the first two games at Baltimore's Memorial Stadium 5 to 3 and 11 to 3 Pitchford when its first game yesterday five to one behind steeply so that er his mark belanger he has an any field a set and he's also popped up [Applause] right up the bag of step inside the line a third baseman up there against the land your speed blowing outside it just missed the corner Santino Illinois did plate umpire Margo sangeun thought he has a strike call one ball and one strike the lander played as an opposite field swinger by the pirate outfield one one swing it was Paulin here staying in at the larger the double check with Jim Oda and oh the macri's with Margo's check swing call back at home play two balls and one strike to Belanger he's at the plate with jig on in the top of the fifth today the winding keeps into on and that was right into the Lancers here he twisted away and three balls in one stroke [Applause] he ripped a Johnson on the back of the fourth inning they almost got the Lancer in the year near the top of the fifth he's gone behind on a three ball one strike [Applause] kepner tighter at third against Bollinger than his Robertson at the other corner 3-1 now [Applause] the Lancer 3 for 12 in this world series it proved his batting average over last season behind some 40 points it's a flyball right-center field way Oliver from Center complimented there's Oliver he's got it faster than air or three [Applause] in three three five the bottom of the fitting in here with pleasure is jimson Thompson hanging in there he has been on the ropes in three of the four innings he has Fitz pitching on a Heppner outside of the high blow on after popped out of her first single moved to second on from any single in the third and four the tying run one one one three runs four hits two hours for the Orioles three runs six hits cars for the Pirates season has blanked the Oreos who's coming on in the last of the first back with a breaking pitch up high one price - the swamp - struck out two after left-handed trigger now 2 for 5 in serious foot Thompson back with a breaking pitch if this is inside at Hefner started to throw the ball under the bat away figure he was called for but it's three balls one strike on deck is Roberto Clemente Baltimore bullpen where the count of three and one is up and throwing again Jackson has been up and throwing that is up and throwing again back with a breaking pitch is fouled on the right-field line Jackson at the moment the only one all strike that he is joined by Dave Danny Murtaugh has gone to his bullpen but once and that's the good-looking brewski she is on a commendable job she's coming on in the last refers to the Hefner hooey Thompson throws breaking pitch called strike three catches the outside corner and hedges hunter on his way to first when he talked with the base on balls but Dobson was a breaking pitch and strike get up [Applause] Freyja breaking pitch in the first inning involved the Pirates and um prior chime right down the right-field line of the biggest dispute this 1971 World Series repair they found our replay monitor from television showed us John Alden but the parts in particularly first base coach John Laberge argued that it was a very broad but he hit the next pitch you saw after that this good for evasive movie had her down the second from when she scored the tying run on top of the fifth Thompson ready to throw to Clemente over and that stays downloaded right below the knees it's going on slang come from any as they always do at least they always have in this series Baltimore the hit to right always has that funny out over the plate although his legs are moving around quite a bit looks like he's bailing out Thompson ready to throw another off-speed pitch at a trial back past the street one ball one strike [Applause] the fifth game of this world series tomorrow afternoon at one o'clock our air time for all forty-five Eastern Time Baltimore leaves two games to run this game is tied 3 apiece ball one strike breaking [Applause] seven somebody takes a big turn first base [Applause] in Georgia ganas in a breaking pitch and double the deep right drive again they have cashed with the first Pittsburgh run back in the first and then battle Dobson only to fly the short centerfield in the third everybody looking for the major league home run champion to uncork were honored with Clemente at first and one out Stargell a left at O steps in against the right-hander Johnson who keeps it blown away it's out of the strike zone for one in the National League Championship Series national occurs from the Giants had great success with Roger with the fastball in tight around the letters interest particular gave Thompson has been working mostly away and there's a breaking pitch a tent in the outside corner Thompson is working on the outside of the face of Stargell and has been heard on long vacation with her run scoring double charge o latest scored the second run himself on ball one strike a place charcoal of course are pulling away around the right hole they can run at 20 at first base back with the fastball it's too high and it's two balls one strike start [Applause] they will remember this first night game in series history a long time first for to happen adjusted the croppers reacted there almost every fits to OnStar don't wait [Applause] [Applause] first base is open Oliver the left-handed player on deck is the right-handed sugar palm Roberts there are now props talked about shop hey butter drawing in the more voltage action is not now [Applause] all right three runs eight hits two errors three runs four hits at No [Applause] possibility play apart or the plate of the plate at least Bob Robertson who's twice has been badly fooled by Dobson I'm checking his swing but post time for the first eternity running right back to Dobson Palfrey Oliver Betty over at third base he is 2 for 3 tonight charger was also 2 for 3 he is down at 2nd base in our Oliver's box [Applause] and over to the opposite field Bobby and rerun [Applause] Baltimore Maryland oils opsonization salvage barrel [Applause] bases are loaded with one out [Applause] somebody coming down the line of third all runners but shortly breaking too high and fall follow those cases for adopted must be careful but it can't be too cute walk drive to the life [Applause] he's got the challenge Bob Robertson one of those fish comes back with a bass ball it has popped up for the NZ I'll have your back the money down the line and we'll all run back to third base [Applause] and so that far the oil strategy has worked and here comes Patti Sam here in bouncer Robinson a Thursday single that the base running on second baseman Hernandez ball back to stop they say in baseball if you're going to have a rundown only one row is necessary to put the tag off still others to either the three three ball game the last of the fifth and Sandia a 300 hitter during the regular season stands hit right-handed with a slight drop she swings and everything this time fall behind flanker we go to John for the second base for the force play this works perfectly as nailed at second base is out Oliver the oil sure out of another inning and so is [Applause] where is that three men left we've gone five minutes the REO free the pirate free he's ready to throw tourette one who is 1 for 2 hi I'm inside of the breaking pitch it's flow up threatening beat out an infield hit Hernandez did well to keep it in the infield going far back on the grass of the first city and merv later scored and then Hernandez throughout rettman in the third with a chop behind second base here's a ride rocker off his ankle that he is three times it's not a perfect one off in the Baltimore six here's Frank Robinson Robinson has hit at every game on Jonas was walked intentionally in the first I could not check his swing of the third and went down swinging before Kissin he's in the shot arming right-hander has hit one banner that was Davey Johnson has come close to hitting others and tons of wrecking - OH - Frank Robinson for one and a hundred and thirty innings of the Eastern League a year ago Eason with outside are most of his hit 21 batters fastball fouled off down porter third-base coaching spots one ball one strike [Applause] ball one strike he said the ball got away from him he strides off the mound solid youngster 21 years old Robinson stands in close to the plate and talking about hitting batters only Ron hunt now at Montreal has been hitting more times and Frank Robinson who vows this pitch off to the left again it's gets up in the seats behind the dugout [Applause] one ball two strikes the Robinson Mario's got all three other arms in the first in a season came on and got the last man and since that time has given up just one base hit hit a batter and struck out three and walked nobody Thompson as their authority has been battling all the way on be had one easy inning that was in the second with a roar end of the batting order robinson ready again after the foul one and two and he's ready to throw throws inside and hits robinson and that is the second man and this time there was no chance for rama to get out of the way at all he was hit in the knee as he twisted away from the ball around 7 comes off the trainer to take a look at his theme robinson standing at the home plate there's just no chance at all to get away out of the way of that pitch that is the tenth time this year that Frank has been hit nine times during the regular season and philanderer who had to get out of the way of a hand high fastball in the last inning has been hit seven times Robinson alright and is walking it off now heading down for first base [Applause] as we said keys in with alright 6 feet 4 inches of him and the side are motion comes off the hound almost from the third-base side and to a right-handed batter it's just very difficult to get out of the way but that was simply way inside here is Brooks Robinson sacrifice fly drove in polenta with a second Oriole run back to the first check the swing and grounded right back the Kishin of the third strike one [Applause] Robinson believe it or not never been hit with a baseball though Frank now has been hit 179 times of his major league career the check over the first as Frank was about four five steps off the bat three-two-three the store where the top of the sixth for up World Series game of the first ever at night Eastern knots the Santini has a sign and the best ball stays high almost that hit at some of the part bands did not think so or not for the first time since Kishin began to warm in the first inning it's the pirate bullpen that begins to get busy for once right just like pump filler from here to right-hander who has been around the National at American League before Tom ball foul at the plate de bazan the batboy a Baltimore who retires after this year picks it up and flips it away what ball two strikes Oh Dave McNally is from Oh Tom imported our pitch the opener last Saturday one at five to three now they browse scheduled to pitch tomorrow keeping in mind the problems of Dobson under the part of the Walker has not pitched in September the 30th and it's only three and he's done he's and ready one two loan away and it's 2-2 though the Brooks Robinson Robinson as all Oriole followers know and so does the American League a very dangerous perhaps the most dangerous late-inning hitter on the oil for club 2 2 pitch long drive centerfield Oliver goes back here the warning track wave he's gone to the Nexus of the slide on the one in cyberspace go Robert that will bring up food is wrong 4:13 officially had a sacrifice fly in the first thing his robe in Baltimore on and a three-run first against before in the fourth inning Eason did a magnificent job on who found Dave Russ to the fastball in on him at the waist and then kind of looking at a breaking pitch that he swung a little late on and popped it up now under the spot and Powell was retired three-two-three the score to off Robinson hit by pitch still on first base he's worked he left out of town pose of all right [Applause] the last of the six it's a thriller REO free are free to tie in the bottom of the sixth inning three runs four hits for Baltimore three runs eight hits for Pittsburgh and on the bottom of the sixth inning we go to Jim Simpson all right bill jackie hernandez we're made our final run against it was line drive at the second and he bunts the ball back to top since that it was trapped off second base in the fourth overdue and the three two three four games option to throw to the right hand and Hernandez who tries to bunt his way out but it is found and as we began the last of the six that was the 97th pitch thrown by Pat Dobson who is Rockport since September the 24th the might be win lose or draw or the remainder of the game if it was a time that Dobson may have to go simply because he's thrown a lot of pitches he's up to 97 already Hernandez back in the box after trying to front his way off Thompson ready breaking pitch inside and Hernandez it's the dirt but it was a change and it was no danger of it being hit again win lose or draw you can mark one thing down for pops and he is front a competitor only not in trouble in the second inning ball one strike back with the fastball [Applause] here comes fruit season who will get Fatih hands Robinson and boob Wow will be breaking for the place in a free free bar game and the later innings for eat off man on the basis and the pitcher up they are looking for Leonard begins to warm the Baltimore bullpen they're breaking in he misses the pump now this foul as he taunted off the end of his bat of the Seas right there at the plate one of the pretty plays that on a baseball Dorsey as an end Esther gone for a second juntao charging from first Robertson charging from third Davey Johnson on his way to first to cover therefore lands are moving forward second everybody moving one strike to Keaton they're beginning to break in again there's the pun and that's foul again at the plate and now a Kishin we'll take a look down go Jack it that's the most of the parts of that in the world series and this is the 14 might be that they're still having Kisame honey we'll see going out on a fastball of the second inning and had a know to count on into the fourth and drew a walk Jackson is now throwing in fall horrible but he is trying to pump but instead looks at a third called strike that's the part that authorities in who fails to move the runner down Pecha been run out to talk to stop the pitcher as Dave cash steps in cash walked in the first and scored at a Stargell double has great speed it appreciate bitching drama Blanche of the third and brought it into a past double play in before - affine competitors - feed - 89 during the regular season and then there's lead off first base he is on his way to second base we gonna miss that you better throw down to second base [Applause] he's been moving down so Danny Bergeron is not a descending down and then steal second base - swing to protect the runner Pat Dobson will be forgiven holding Hernandez too close because Dobson was probably told get the clubhouse biddies and shouting reports the Orioles on the Pirates a Jackie Hernandez has not sold ovation all year that is number one like Wanda Johnson cash and as with a good leave our up at second base stop salutes back in throws it's down low ball one strike three runs four hits dollars for the REO three runs nine hits no errors for the Pirates where the last of the six Thompson throws power ride into the seats down the right-field side [Applause] or the ushers down there who grabbed the ball as it came back on the deal turn around that looked at a spectator but does not tossing them all said something and get the ball in the ballpark Bobson with a little room to work here one ball two strikes to catch and those off a second was one off [Applause] Thompson throws way out an engineer does a great job to keep that from being a wild pitch had the time to his right at backhand the piranhas he fell down quickly but Hernandez was not on his way he wants just right Jackson and Lenox continue to throw on the Baltimore bullpen Trotta well over fifty dollars in warming to this form game of the World Series the first of night they've got a dandy at 3 2 3 2 2 pitch at his inside and past backs away and he's gone all the way on him three balls two strikes that should that runs out for a con by the way I and a lot of other folks gave it a three river stayed in the night armed with raincoats armed with top coach along the dugouts down the first seven third-base line you can see top coats just off from Jonathan dugout it's a rather comfortable night if you came on the air the temperature was 72 degree 3 and 2 and as off at second base Thompson ready to throw the cash and throw the ball hit right back off [Applause] Thompson did not show the quickest reactions after stopping that profit rolled on me well there's much closer to the round and it runs to Johnson playing deep in second Johnson ran in by the time he picked it up Hernandez was the third he could stop him from story but cash who has a lot of speed was well across first base composition on the mountaintops it is out of there and with a left-hander after coming up I would imagine it's going to be too left-hander grant Jackson coming on the bit joy after his one for three tonight at the 3 to 3 ballgame McCoy head run is at third base with just one Jackson comes in he is going to move in the corner part of that Pittsburgh batting order after Clemente have perhaps charged al Oliver Robert you might have awesome group that the Pirates happen tonight they banged out 10 hits as compared to form of the oil the score at the moment is even Steven a 3 3 and here comes fractions oh well Jim if Jackson comes on and the Baltimore starter pack tops and departs the Pirates at only one and they failed to have at least one base that they have already delivered two base hits off top here and the bottom of the sixth inning now we take you to Tony Kubek the left-hander due up for the pies Richie Abner or Weaver brings in grant Jackson the left-hander will see if the Pirates now go switch to a right-handed pinch-hitter and allow Jack to warmed up let's go down to Tony with me down here near the commissioners box and the manual instead you put on some pretty good hitting off of your day but this team to play with anything two of them yes they feel out of line Jeff they're a lot of power hitters right so they're very good hitting do you think any of the teams that you plan on overthrowing this adding purpose I would say they're missed a lot of opportunities here because the a lot of chance it was bent on here you know they've had a man in scoring position every day so far in this ball game and the first they've only got three but it looks like they should have more like really did time because sometimes you missed these up Jimmy's ride a patch if I young Bruce Kison Lee right header the sidearm looks pretty tough to done it surprisingly keeps up falling down down honey has a good tanker gone through several pitches here we've talked about the pirate club Stan but this Baltimore you'll crop there's so many things so well there what are the best all-around ball teams I've seen a long time now crash the front deck either sound their pitching hitting in defense and they have a very fine ballclub one work request all about your golf game [Music] thank you so much let's go stairs good right Baltimore's relief for the left-hander grant Jackson has gone on to replace hat dumps in word 5 and 1/3 giving up three runs and ten bases Jackson a left-hander an international leader with a Phillies a year ago primarily a fastball thriller Jackson to throw to Hafner and there's a ground ball for trauma that has it it happened so fast Robertson soldiers right and caught the ball and look to third base and was going to trauma third base but a Hernandez got back very quickly and there there's another incredible play driver problems one pitch a windfall and shanks it was retired one bad you know it's a funny thing as Earl Weaver trots out now to tell Jackson what he wants done with Clemente it may be that's all for Jackson I don't know with rendered the right-hander throwing now in from second base comes Bollinger they may be sending up what the two depending on wanted is it Clemente does but it's a funny thing in Pittsburgh papers after yesterday's victory they were saying Brooks Robinson no longer was the human vacuum cleaner has it been two doubles ripped down the third base line and he didn't have the reflexes to make the catch well I want to tell you that was part of refracts diving for a third phase that proofs Robinson out there and he came up with the ball and it's two out now and sort of [Applause] our waiter said to grant Jackson a left-hander facing the right hand swing to the climatic his been a left-hand batters charger that's coming up neck and I would assume he didn't want to go with the right-hander Leonard against Clemente and then follow with a left-hander Stargell so he probably has worn Jackson don't give lamenting anything good work on him carefully and then go after the circle next Maddie is two for three World Series games Roberto has been in and they ship safely in all of the home Jackson ready throws outside of law that simply moved off the plate that if you've been listening to these World Series games you know that they work from any outside and preferably low Boog Powell is now called on by Kent Reggie Baron after hole for runner - despite his speed at first base instead of mr. Clemente especially since he hitched a ride in the fall backs up at first ball no strike free to free the straw we are in the last of the six Jackson throws fastball strike but I checked his swing but it's a strike one ball one strike when he struck out of the curve in the first at that disputed vote on the right fuel line that was called found and followed with a run-scoring single to the third single to the pit checks out his single in the third did not score on the blue the man over who did score your action he's got it a new ballgame Jackson's taking a lot of time and working now hexagon moves inside have a is dim-sighted law and when he fouls it off to the right and the etchebarren simply does not leave one way or the other he simply positions himself outside or inside one ball two strikes but again Clemente is a great two strike hitter Jax for left-handers Hernandez down the line inside breaking dishes two balls two strikes well honey keeps checking with og a cat they're basically short as Hernandez the third base runner that's your moves outside this time the pitch is outside it or on it it's real our bill to justice Jackson is working from any very carefully he has kept them although he is going outside and inside now his pitches have been to the outside of the place but are they stepped up now steps it Jackson who pitched against him many times before that Jared's outside the ball is hit outside deep down the right-field line [Applause] but he had enough food without swing of about to hit it out of here had it stayed there between late at the outside pitch throat or found on the right field side so again it is three balls two strikes - we'll be moving off at first or then this works be checking to see what happens at third [Applause] there goes cash little ball for over on our charcoal in a double the driving around corner on himself live to center field and seagulls raju has not had a home run at the championship series of the World Series he comes up now with an opportunity for a Grand Slam with two out of the six keys Richard now becomes a left-hander drawing in the Baltimore bullpen ground ball for John to the second base now those only cover first and again the Orioles are out of trouble leaving three more that is ten men they have left in 680 two runs two hits Torres and three leprechaun six complete innings the Oreo free the pirate free in a top of the seventh inning in a 3-3 time it'll be the Lauren now they Baltimore order Dave Johnson Andy etchebarren and grant Jackson now since the Pirates still have this right-handed reliever on Ruth Kisha to may disappearance of the first inning for starter Luke Walker there is a chance I would think that there could be a pinch-hitting situation for etchebarren and my well off Sofia pinch-hitting situation for grant Jackson we say that because just a couple of moments ago Oriole left hand wing in catcher Elrod Hendricks rushed down to the Oriole bullpen Johnson will be the leadoff man he was hit by a key to the pitch in the fourth inning the Pirates have out hit the Oreos 10:00 to 4:00 we've got a 3-3 tie on the top of the setup all right Jeff and Bruce Keisha was given up just one base hit and struck out three and walked nobody prepares to bit specific facing Dave Johnson throws inside but it tipped off the bat of Johnson as he swung around to get out of the way at it strike one at Fargo the plate umpire tonight give all them at first John Kippur at second nestor shylack a third etch it all on the left-field line and it's with john rice if there's a strike right that aesthetic battle with first base coach Don leopard of Pittsburgh over whether a committee it was fair or foul he should quickly add a Johnson oh and to sign on outside at Lawrence one ball two strikes free to free the store Eddie watt now it's up to throw is the Leonard Jack's moves in Rickard and now on our clients for the moment as tall brewski she looks into Sandhya now ready the 1 2 pitch curveball drilled out port center field house Oliver coming over to his right and take this Andy etchebarren who hit the ball very hard the cash at second base was thrown out of the second inning and hits the first pitch that is on the 4th and grounded into a double play for the second time over 2 we are in the seventh inning and in the late innings of the tie ballgame you want to guard that third-base line it matters what's rich up here doing right now just a step or two off the back at third base off the line Asian steps off the mound to rub up the ball [Applause] alrights got all of their runs in the free run first the REO did the parts came back with two of the first time the Orioles were tied in the third inning of the strike on a breaking pitch three three three of zeros set up on this 2005 thus far won't look on any right in the back that's the third man he has hit tonight a breaking pitch and again there was absolutely no chance in the world for the batter to get out of the way of the pitch it hit him in the back a curve coming in from behind at Jeff Aaron and the go ahead run goes down to first base and I am sure that you will not see mr. Jackson come out rather it looks like Tom Shoop a sure thing the spree in turn to hit 257 this year it's not hit a homerun at five RBIs but he is a left-handed swinger that will come on to bat for Jackson Jackson worked two-thirds of an inning walk one man and veiled or Thompson and the Orioles out of a lot of trouble now we have activity of the pirate broke down a right-hander to right they just see the bat with all those saves during the regular season 30 plus three of the championship playoff has a veteran gone fella 3 2 3 the score had severe Oh Donna first xocai the batter [Applause] joking has been up once before and he is over 1 after his thinking punt comes in the ball is inside and low after coming in from third base figuring that show pay is up there to move him on path top so that the part of pitchers a dandy butter jacks on the pitcher of record right now floral it is too old and important men for Kishin on the fire to get if they do not get it hey well I bet you baron at least down at second base have over top of the batting order coming up tomorrow strike the batting order features Paul Blair arrests - it's the third time he's an Oliver very deep in center field lesion has set a series record creating batsmen 11 different pitches it's to the game but nobody's ever hit three before but Bruce has done it back again swinging and missing at a breaking pitch another half two balls two strikes they play Tom show pay around to the left figuring that he will not pull the ball big gap between left center and right field upside up high it is three to nine inch on great you with one arm not ocf etchebarren is going with just one out three to three the score [Applause] not going brown ball over the head of keys in the cash comes up with it behind second base go for second base that just Robin stabbed his flute the back gets the front runner edge of our trophy on the first play is the first base and that brings up Blair singled and scored of the first doubled in the second the ball was actually it not that hard but found it over the head of the outfielder after taking one bounce and then drove on over the last inning on the pre 2 pitch very deep in center field check the show pay at first base you'll recall it in the last inning when the Pirates could not move Hernandez along with a punt they had in stealing Asia has now checked twice over to Tom Shope they where Paul Robertson holding him Claire does not swing at a high offer but then check this way it's gone this is a data pivotal game Baltimore wins if they do three games to one it only needs to win one of the remaining three pirates winner that's a whole new series outside with the pitch it's too low it would be tied at two games apiece with the fifth game to here tomorrow after donut our air time Eastern Daylight Time 4:45 the more games are necessary Friday's an off day and we resume again in Baltimore on southern to another pitch ball is hit high and deep my co-star Joe heeded the warning track near the wall and the are no free of the pirate free the Orioles are bringing on their second relief pitcher of the evening they had grant Jackson replaced the Pat Dobson last inning Jackson thief just three man he walked Clemente and then he got the big out forcing a star chill with a bases loaded and to Ghana the 3-3 tie that Stargell bounced down second baseman Johnson to towel walk in the seventh inning now making his second World Series appearance this year he fished inning in yesterday's game he'll run against Pittsburgh in the bottom of the seventh I think black will say say Oliver Bob Robertson and manis Sandhya now as far as what the overall record was concerned during 1971 blocked 1/3 lost one he had more seeds than anybody out of the Oriole bullpen 811 appeared 35 times in relief quickly short relief as the left-hander Pete Richert Hall Stewart is short relief 139 at a fraction it again and has the very best earned run average on the Oriole staff less than she runs again lots of fishing equipment pretty simple that's all sliders Potter might be his very best pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning he'll face out Oliver and here is Jim Jim all right Don oh and another interesting statistic about Eddie watt and the 39 plus innings he gave up but one home on if you're thinking long haul Harvard perfect might give a dip an intentional walk and he has driven in Iran rings of her fitting helmet that's strike one Oliver droven Stargell in the first inning with a double and then came on the score Heppner with a line drive single arrive in the third walked intentionally to load the bases of the fifth spot ready back and throws again catches the outside corner of the pass ball quickly Arbor is down to a trot Owens ooh last of the seventh inning three debris all is fouled out of play past their face up of the seats well perhaps it is with a sense of the Grammatik that baseball is given a such a game for the first night game in World Series history and this the 398 World Series game to be played 3 to 3 in a ball game that has had action in nearly every happening and for the Pirates in every happening but one walked back and throws a breaking pitch at strike three and Oliver doing [Applause] what strikes out Oliver and here comes Bob Robertson Robertson is now over three of the ballgame he is running back to the pigeon flies and has hopped up to the shortstop : when a prompt our long time of the defending it was with a bases-loaded at one up beautiful night they were talking about rain Jones just big common enough to come much later tonight fog ready to throw right an to the right-hander ground ball and recant into this but it rolls on through in the center field Robert as the Second World Series base hit how does the 11 tips for the fire more importantly it puts the go-ahead run on at first base with pennies and he is one for three the hitter [Applause] and possessed a fine feed for a catcher and as we said he is up there to swing he wants seldom Andy in all year long at night he's won 13 times he was walked intentionally swinging valves tip at the plate 19 times he won't 13 other times he was work but he has nothing to do with it they walk him intentionally and consider the sangeun plated honor 38 games it was up 533 times you'll know that 90 is up there to swing starching right hand about it font checks with her owner Robertson who does not have great speed throw the fastball [Applause] ours have been something else again they left 14 men on at Monday's game thus far tonight they've been tended on in the three free time Oh the old fella got family or chilli d5 hitter during the regular season left-handed batter against the right-hander walk that leo has been up one time and gunner bait didn't score to run in this world series Rickard and Tom Dukes saffron to free this car I do the brakes crews ready to come and buy whiskey right now the Pirates ready to break through that will Fowlds with all of the plate strike one on deck is brewskis but also [Applause] just in case they want to get a big inning without you they just the farm boy although safe throwing hard though in the park open prior to that 12-inch that pole so far it's all even free of he's taking his time ready with the one strike pitch to fix Emily oh there are lows of all his pumped up now we'll come back for the she shall play I get home Roberts down at second base banished and Ian on at first Sam game at first does half as we seen excellent speed and time leo is also prevents a good speed it would be a difficult double play and worst of all is Martin first Robertson must move over to 3rd and 1st Rama to the station there Jew strikes to Don Valley Oak caught out in front of men Chabert moves to the outside of the plate the ball is thrown the ball is popped up he's got there's Robeson is stopping a coger to jam up on the basis Sandhya's hung up sand Guillen is out of second sand Guillen nearly passed Robertson on the bases and he's tagged out by mark Belanger or Dave Johnson tag team all right here it is again and now you're going to see this thing we told you about those lights peering over his left shoulder and I'm sure that bothered Blair and he drops the ball there now Blair is going to pick it up quickly and Sangeet it was a very daring base runner is going to be called cut out their Bible and urine tagged out by Johnson and that is an extremely big out as Earl Weaver again has come back to the mound Paul Blair you saw something unusual when he gets to a ball and can't hold on to it he's charged with an error Blair charged with an error but he really made a recovery to get that ball back in the infield of the relay man belanger who sized up the situation and flipped the dave johnson blue tag sangeun bankia twice now has been cut down between second and third Bob Robertson wound up a third Milton may now a young left-handed hitting catcher is going to bat for Bruce Kison and on first is davalillo the Orioles just made their eighth error of the series for the Pirates Turks we've had all kinds of storing opportunities and it's not just this game tonight Kurt it's been every game they've been in milk may hit 278 this year six homers 25 runs batted in he's only 21 years old a brilliant prospect for the future for the Pirates ball one he would be playing regular on most clubs what are we gonna do with him Bob they're gonna make Sam Guillen into an outfielder they've been talking about it but then they tried him in the winter ball he ran into a fence and got hit with a line drive they don't want to try that anymore there's a drive into right-center it's a base hit in the fire take the lead coming into score of Robertson may singles to right center davalillo goes to third and the fires for the first time are in the lead in this game [Applause] Nellie finally got the timely hit and now Dean Ali goes in to run for milk May at first base May gets a big hand as he drops into the pirate dugout he came through [Applause] that move right there - Kirk will freeze Ally in the number nine spot in the batting order and allow Murtaugh to put his new pitcher who will be Dave Justi come into the ball game and get a little higher up in the order the two heroes right now 21 year old Bruce Kison who pitched a brilliant relief job tonight and now Milt May who delivered the go-ahead single for the three Pittsburgh do down and Dave cash up with runners on first and third and he watch low with it for a ball [Applause] that third is davalillo Dean Ali at first the Pirates have had 13 hits all over that for hips Waku [Applause] [Applause] the tool fit a strike with a fastball to and one he had to select the game Curt Goudy to send all over the world for the first night telecast in the history of the World Series I don't know how you can select the better one that's right about everything there's a drive in the right field that Robinson moves back for and that's all but the fires took the lead and they're lucky seven they had one run three hits one error and two left by Pittsburgh at the end of seven it's Pittsburgh for Baltimore three [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] we pause now for station identification [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Dave Justin hours I'm trying to protect the pirate lead the pitcher of record though for Pittsburgh is Bruce Kison and a 21 year old pitcher went six and a third innings in relief allowed only one hit no runs didn't walk a man struck out three set a new world series record by hitting free batters he's the winner if the Pirates hold the lead what about Dave Jesse Bob well he was five and six on the year but that doesn't really tell the story he had 30 saves he was the saving pitcher in the clincher for the Eastern Division title against the Cardinals he was the saver in the clincher for the National League Championship and against the San Francisco Giants he appeared in all four games gene Ali has gotten a shortstop for Pittsburgh replacing Jackie Hernandez mark Belanger leading off as an infield hit in three times a ball to end for the eighth inning that's alley dusty has a fastball breaking pitch in a foam ball like 101 those that fall back out of the palm of his hand uses that as his changeup the Royals have not had a hit in the last five innings they had three runs and three hits in the first inning they had a bloop double in the second inning and they were stopped cold by Bruce Kison the 1-1 pitch just outside two and one they've just he led the National League in saves this year with 30 he pitched one scoreless inning in the second game of the series 30 years old - on delivery breanne one double Angier [Applause]
