Oh I love these. I have since I saw them on the woodsmith shop. Roy Underhill did a couple segments on Barnes man powered tools.

My grandma has a old sewing machine that works like that. I know my favorite thing to do was see how fast I could get the big wheel spinning.
Curious why not add another axle (wheel?) to pedal forwards like 99% of other pedaling mechanisms in existence?
Ive always wanted to do a project on of these. Ended up buying a 20's southbend instead
