100 Year old potato chip machine Thanks for joining. Look what I found. This very old, very heavy potato chip machine. More than a century old an a fine example of British quality manufacturing. It was made by George Salter & Co, founded by the Salter Brothers in 1769. It was a small business creating spings. In 1825 they changed the name into "Geo. Salter & Co." They added the "Ltd" in 1915. So this machin can be dated back around that time. It has removable blades and it is completely stuck. No movement at all. Well, I am going to take it apart. I will use this machine myself so I am going to bring it back to life. But first: coffee and a stroopwafel. First release the heavy spring... Or maybe later... So, remove the spring... And the other side of the spring too. Maybe later... Now I can acces the spring... Maybe later... Let's see what they had for dinner in WWII: Yep...potato. Was it that hard?... This looks too much like the dentist and takes too long, I'm going to do it differently. I think the result is minimal and it took a long time. So I will use the bench grinder. I like this better than chemicals. I will reuse the original bolts. Left: bench grinder. Right: sandblasted. I have already done the spring with the wire brush, but I want to sandblast the inside. I am going to 'blue' the steel. This side looks too empty... The lever shaft was riveted, so I have to make a new one. A 3D printed guide block, see if it works Blueing by means of heating. And putting it in oil. Just to see the difference. The heated shaft on the right looks slightly better. I decide to make a box to collect the fries. Originally the machine was mounted on a table with a hole. Holes for the rubber feet.. I don't want to see screws on the top side. Was that a bird!?! I will 3d print the container in 2 parts. At the back I make a metal plate that hits 2 magnets. Sand for a while to get some wood dust in the seams. And this is how to remove dust... Danish Oil. The handle shaft will have nylon washers, but they are too thick. Lovely! I took a few mm from the spring hook, it now goes back very easily. I added rubber rings. The new shaft. I forgot the two washers, I corrected that later. That bare lever is bothering me... I print this in a flexible material (Real Flex Black). The magnets hold the box in place. Let me know in the comments what you like or what can be improved! The final test...
