Mechanical rectifier, always wondered if such a thing were possible. Now I know.
I guess this came before the "TungSol" mercury rectifier used on battery chargers in the 30's-50's.
The 4 coils must be a degausser to prevent the reed from picking up a magnetic charge and sticking to one side.
Edit: Mica?, Yes, it's about the only insulator that would be suitable for that thin back then. As far as the ampmeter going both directions, they probably just used a stock one from a car. It would never go left, unless maybe the contacts were badly out of adjustment.
