Fascinating. Does anyone know why these had to be gas powered? Were electric engines just not up to the task at this time?

The Amish do not use electricity because the electric lines would be a permanent link to the outside communities in which they live. They modify electrical appliances to gasoline power. Sewing machines, etc. Perhaps this was developed for the same reason or electric power was not available in remote places.
