behold the handmaid of the lord may be done unto me according to thy word hail mary full of grace the lord is with me blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb jesus and the word was made flesh and dwelt among us hail mary full of grace the lord is with thee blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb jesus pray for us the holy mother of god that we may be made worthy of the promises of christ let us pray pour forth we beseech thee o lord thy grace into our hearts that we to whom the incarnation of christ thy son was made known by the message of an angel made by his passion and cross be brought to the glory of his resurrection through the same christ our lord amen in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit [Music] so the lord heard and had mercy on me the lord became my helper in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the lord be with you as we come together to celebrate these sacred mysteries let us call to mind our sins you raise the dead to life in the spirit lord have mercy you bring pardon and peace to the sinner christ have mercy you are light to those who dwell in darkness lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and lead us to everlasting life let us pray show gracious favor o lord we pray to the works of penance we have begun that we may have strength to accomplish with sincerity the bodily observances we undertake through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god for ever and ever a reading from the book of the prophet isaiah thus says the lord god cry out full-throated and unsparingly lift up your voices like a trumpet blast tell the people their wickedness in the house of jacob their sins they seek me day after day and desire to know my ways like a nation that has done what is just and not abandoned the law of their god they asked me to declare what is do them pleased to gain access to god why do we fast and you do not see it afflict ourselves and you take no note of it love on your fast day you carry out your own pursuits and drive all your laborers yes you're fast ends in quarreling and fighting striking with wicked claw with that today you might fast so as to make your voice heard on high is this the matter of fasting i wish of keeping a day of penance that a man bow his head like a reed and lie in sackcloth and ashes do you call this a fast a day acceptable to the lord this rather is the fasting that i wish releasing those bound unjustly untying the thongs of the yoke setting free the oppressed breaking every yoke sharing your bread with the hungry sheltering the oppressed and the homeless clothing the naked when you see them and not turning your back on them then your light shall break forth like the dawn and your wound shall quickly be healed your vindication shall go before you and the glory of the lord shall be your guard then you shall call and the lord will answer you shall cry for help and he will say here i am the word of the lord responsorial psalm is a heart contrite and humbled o god you will not spurn have mercy on me o god in your goodness in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense thoroughly wash me from my guilt and of my sin cleanse me a heart contrite and humbled o god you will not spurn for i acknowledge my offense and my sin is before me always against you only i have sinned and done what is evil in your sight a heart contrite and humbled o god you will not spurn for you are not pleased with sacrifices should i offer a burnt offering you would not accept it my sacrifice o god is contrite spirit a heart contrite and humbled oh god you will not spurn a heart contrite and humbled oh god you will not spurn please stand the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew the disciples of john approached jesus and said why do we and the pharisees fast much but your disciples do not fast jesus answered them can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them and then they will fast the gospel of the lord all things are done in the proper context never done for their own sake and it's a good reminder we have on this first sunday of lent which is our second day of abstinence but the first that is on a friday first day of abstinence and also fasting was ash wednesday but this is the first day in which it as a community of faith during the season of lent we have that commitment to abstain eat and every year i always run into people who not only do they make the decision but they feel they have to tell the priest they've made the decision that they don't do it because they don't get anything out of it and they do other things to observe lent on this particular day to which i simply remind them well it's not about you getting anything out of it the proper context makes us understand the practice itself we've given things up for lent individually but there are things that we do together to bind us together as church and the days of fasting both of them and the days of abstinence the fridays during lent are the days in which we as a community of faith come together and do a similar practice as an observance because we are a community of faith and i always like to make the distinction that meatless fridays is not a sacrifice unless of course you're serving fish sticks then it's a sacrifice but meatless fridays for the most part is an observance and they like to compare to shooting fireworks off on the fourth of july and eating turkey on thanksgiving it's what we do that binds us as a nation on those days observances that we that we do because we are americans we belong as one country and it's things like that that unite us even in subtle ways as a nation this is an example of that where we don't eat meat on friday not because we can't eat meat you can do whatever you want no one's holding a weapon to your head ramming meat down your throat it's not that we can't eat meat it's that we don't eat meat the sense of saying we can't connotes a sense that we're being forced to do something we don't want to do in saying we don't eat meat then that connotes a sense of something we desire to do to identify with the community that we to which we belong how many people have told me since the 60s father i left the catholic church once i found out that eating eating meat on friday was no longer a mortal sin to which i look at him like they just got off a flying saucer not me and i say has it ever been a mortal sin and do we fixate so much on not eating meat because we're avoiding sin or is it we're doing it because we identify with the community in which we belong we are catholics and catholics do this together as opposed to the disposition saying i don't identify with the church i'm not a part of the church i don't follow what the church does i do my own thing and perhaps that's the disposition that leads to the sin that's associated with not fulfilling this particular obligation it's not so simplistic as to say this is mortal sin and this isn't and one might think it's we're happy to hear that something isn't a mortal sin but where is the sin exactly and that's the lack of identification and with the community at large in which we are in which we are apart and within which is the context in which we do this and so on this first of the meatless fridays as jesus says we don't fast when the bridegroom is here when we're celebrating we don't fast when the bridegroom leaves then we do all things in the proper context and when we understand when we do something it helps us to understand deep more deeply why we do something influences when we do it and gives meaning and substance to what we do and so on days of fasting and abstinence and especially on this day of friday during land we don't abstain for its own sake we don't abstain simply to punish ourselves but it's an observance that we do together as a community of faith and we do it because we desire to walk together during this season of lent and this togetherness is more important perhaps this year because we have fellow catholics in ukraine who are perhaps striving to observe this even in the midst of the difficulty their country faces or perhaps are unable to observe it because of the difficulty their country faces so in that spirit of togetherness let us really go into these practices during lent in union with the people of ukraine our fellow catholics and christians in ukraine and if it's a situation in which they can't do it because of their dire circumstances then as a community of faith let us do it for them and in their name nothing we do on this day that's obligatory is done in isolation the individual sacrifices we do engage in yes the things we give up every day monday through friday 40 plus days until we celebrate easter the gifts that we see perhaps sinful behaviors we want to overcome yes those we do individually but these obligations that we engage in these exercises we engage in when understood in the proper context should not need an obligation for us to engage in them let this first day of our meatless fridays bind us together as a community of faith and give us a feeling of connection and connectedness with those who are suffering war in ukraine at this time so that we can identify with the one community of faith throughout the world who professes this one faith throughout the world who is observing the same lenten season throughout the world and on this day together every christian every catholic throughout the world are bound together by our common practice of meatless fridays so that our observance is not something we do in isolation as a sacrifice but as exactly that an observance that binds us more closely to one another as church as we together journey through this season of lent we offer our prayers to our heavenly father as we pray for our holy father pope francis salvatore bishop and all the leaders of the church throughout the world especially those who struggle to lead their flock in ukraine during this difficult time we pray to the lord for the leaders of our nation and our nations throughout the world that we will see an end to violence and conflict and war and a respect for all human life and dignity we pray to the lord for all of us gathered here to worship at the table of the lord that we may be given the grace and the strength to go forward as we continue this our observance of lent we pray to the lord for all those who are sick and under a doctor's care that they may feel the healing hand of christ upon them in mind body and in spirit we pray to the lord for all those who have died especially jose salavir and for our family friends and members of this parish who have gone before us marked with a sign of faith we pray to the lord and for all the special intentions we hold in the silence of our hearts for these in the needs of all god's holy people we pray to the lord and we make all our prayers through christ our lord blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you fruit of the earth and work of human hands it will become for us the bread of life blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you fruit of the vine and work of human hands it will become our spiritual drink pray that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father we offer you oh lord the sacrifice of our lenten observance praying that it may make our intentions acceptable to you and add to our powers of self-restraint through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord for by your gracious gift each year your faith will await the sacred paschal feasts with joy with the joy of minds made pure so that more eagerly intent on prayer and on the works of charity and participating in the mysteries by which they have been reborn they may be led to the fullness of grace that you bestow on your sons and daughters and so with angels and dark angels with thrones and dominions and with all the hosts and powers of heaven we sing the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy oh lord and from the world's beginning are ceaselessly at work so that the human race may become holy just as you yourself are holy look we pray upon your people's offerings and pour out on them the power of your holy spirit that they may become the body and the blood of your beloved son jesus christ in whom we too are your sons and daughters indeed though we once were lost and could not approach you you loved us with the greatest love for your son who alone has just handed himself over to death and did not disdain to be nailed for our sake to the wood of the cross but before his arms were outstretched between heaven and earth to become the lasting sign of your covenant he desired to celebrate the passover with his disciples as he ate with them he took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to them saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] in a similar way when supper was ended knowing that he was about to reconcile all things in himself through his blood to be shed on the cross he took the chalice filled with the fruit of the vine and once more giving you thanks handed the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith save us savior of the world for by your cross and resurrection you have set us free therefore as we celebrate the memorial of your son jesus christ who is our passover and our surest peace we celebrate his death and resurrection from the dead and looking forward to his blessed coming we offer you who are our faithful and merciful god this sacrificial victim who reconciles to you the human race look kindly most compassionate father on those you unite to yourself by the sacrifice of your son and grant that by the power of the holy spirit as they partake of this one bread and one chalice they may be gathered into one body in christ who heals every division be pleased to keep us always in communion of mind and heart together with francis our pope and salvatore our bishop help us to work together for the coming of your kingdom until the hour when we stand before you saints among the saints and the halls of heaven with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints and with our deceased brothers and sisters whom we humbly commend to your mercy then freed at last from the wound of corruption and made fully into a new creation we may sing to you with gladness the thanksgiving of christ who lives for all eternity through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign forever and ever the peace of the lord be with you always let us offer to one another a sign of peace lamb of god behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord make me know your ways teach me your paths you let us pray we pray almighty god that through partaking of this mystery we may be cleansed of all our misdeeds and so be suited for the remedies of your compassion through christ our lord the lord be with you let us bow down for the blessing for your mighty deeds o god of mercy may your people offer endless thanks and by observing the age old disciplines along their pilgrim journey may they merit to come and behold
