oh [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] let us pray almighty god grant that always pondering spiritual things we may carry out in both word and indeed that which is pleasing to you through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever key a reading from the first book of samuel in those days saul went down to the desert of zif with three thousand picked men of israel to search for david in the desert of zif so david and abishai went among saul soldiers by night and found saul lying asleep within the barricade with his spear thrust into the ground at his head and abner and his men sleeping all around him abhished whispered to david god has delivered your enemy into your grasp this day let me nail him to the ground with one thrust of the spear i will not need a second thrust but david said to abhishei do not harm him for who can lay hands on the lord's anointed and remain unpunished so david took the spear and the water jug from their place at saul's head and they got away without anyone seeing or knowing or awakening all remained asleep because the lord had put them into a deep slumber going across to an opposite slope david stood on a remote hilltop at a great distance from abner son of nur and the troops he said here is the king's spear let an attendant come over to get it the lord will reward each man for his justice and faithfulness today though the lord delivered you into my grasp i would not harm the lord's anointed the word of the lord um [Music] the lord is kind and merciful the lord is kind and merciful [Music] the lord is kind and merciful the lord is kind and merciful [Music] bless the lord o my soul and all within me his holy name bless the lord o my soul and never forget all his benefits the lord is kind and merciful the lord is kind and merciful [Music] it is the lord who forgives all your sins who heals every one of your ills who redeems your life from the grave who crowns you with mercy and compassion [Music] the lord is kind and merciful the lord is kind and merciful [Music] the lord is compassionate and gracious slow to anger and rich in mercy he does not treat us according to our sins nor repay us according to our [Music] the lord is kind and merciful the lord is kind and merciful [Music] as far as the east is from the west so far from us does he remove our transgressions the father has compassion on his children the lord's compassion is on those who fear him [Music] the lord is kind and merciful the lord is kind and merciful [Music] a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters it is written the first man adam became a living being the last adam a life-giving spirit but the spiritual was not first rather the natural and then the spiritual the first man was from the earth earthly the second man from heaven as was the earthly one so also are the earthly and as is the heavenly one so also are the heavenly just as we have borne the image of the earthly one we shall also bear the image of the heavenly one of the heavenly one the word of the to lord hallelujah [Music] i give you a new commandment says the lord love one another as i have loved you hallelujah [Music] hallelujah [Music] may the lord be with you and with your spirit this is a reading from the holy gospel according to luke glory to you oh lord jesus said to his disciples to you who hear i say love your enemies do good to those who hate you bless those who curse you pray for those who mistreat you to the person who strikes you on one cheek offer the other one as well and from the person who takes your cloak do not withhold even your tunic give to everyone who asks of you and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back do to others as you would have them do to you for if you love those who love you what credit is that to you even sinners love those who love them and if you do good to those who do good to you what credit is that to you even sinners do the same if you lend money to those from whom you expect repayment what credit is that to you even sinners lend to sinners and get back the same amount but rather love your enemies and do good to them and lend expecting nothing back then your reward will be great and you will be children of the most high for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked be merciful just as your father is merciful stop judging and you will not be judged stop condemning and you will not be condemned forgive and you will be forgiven give and gifts will be given to you a good measure packed together shaken down and overflowing will be poured into your lap for the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you the good news the gospel of the lord at the beginning of mass i forgot to welcome those who are attending this mass live streaming of those of you at home welcome to our mass gathering so many who are here today in person i always like to acknowledge the fact that there are people who are at home attending this mass on the live streaming medium and back in the days when we didn't have people here in the cathedral we were getting hundreds of people attending the masses we all of them were live streamed then and one sunday i said this mass and after it's just out of curiosity i went to youtube to see how many had watched that mass or attended that mass live streaming 1600 amazing i don't think that many are doing that today because we're able to gather in person but still people who can't get out are attending so welcome to all of you at home keep in mind the response which we sang today the psalm response because i think it's key to the questions i'm going to throw at you and in that response we sang the lord is kind and merciful those are two of my favorite words from all of scripture especially from the psalms kind and merciful don't those words sound good kind and merciful the lord is kind and merciful in the psalms the 150 psalms the word kind or kindness is used 122 times and mercy is used almost as much i am so glad to hear those words because i don't know about you but i can use all the kindness and mercy that i can get and can't we all so let's keep those words in mind as we look at the first reading and what david does and what you or i might have done under the same circumstances what's going on saul the king is trying to catch and to kill david it's that simple and he's got three thousand troops out looking for david so he can kill him as you heard in the first reading david and his companion come upon saul sleeping with his spear thrust into the ground next to his head and the companion says let me run him through i won't need more than one thrust i can finish him off with one poke of the spear what would you have done suppose saul had been after you and wanted to kill you the usual reaction i was going to say normal but maybe not the usual human reaction would be hey stick him run him through he's been trying to kill me so go ahead kill him david doesn't do that does he david says no i will not harm the lord's anointed the anointed king of israel but is proof that he has been there and could have had saul dispatched he takes the spear and the jug of water goes to the other side of the valley and then when saul wakes up david's on the other side waving the spear saying look what i have look what i could have done to you again put yourself in his place david's action reaction is unusual to say the least in terms of the usual way human beings seem to act toward enemies oh and then we get to the gospel and we're in even deeper trouble because jesus once again is not letting us be comfortable he's trying to challenge us and does challenge us and what does he say love your enemies do good to those who hate you is that what we're inclined to do as human beings is that usual human behavior that we love our enemies and do good to those who hate us and why would you ever do that anyway that whole gospel is one great big challenge to rise above the everyday and the usual normal if you want to use that word usual human behavior and do more be more how do you do that how do you love your enemies how do you do good to those who hate you and all the other things in that gospel from beginning to end it's challenging and it's meant to be it's meant to call us beyond what we ordinarily would do as human beings in the way we interact with one another especially enemies or people we don't like how is one to bring that off assuming that one can now let's go back to the psalm what we sang the lord is kind and merciful if you and i have been on the receiving end of the kindness and mercy of god in our lives and god knows i have more than i ever deserved and maybe some of you could say the same and thanks be to god for that if you and i have been on the receiving end of the kindness and mercy of god can we do other than to reciprocate that kindness and mercy to others what do you do just let it die with you the lord is kind and merciful to me but you're my enemy i'm going to stick you with my spear no if the lord is kind and merciful to you and to me aren't we meant to turn that back to pass it on yes think about your life and how many times the lord has shown kindness and mercy to you it's been true in my life so many times i can't even begin to number all the times all i know is that i am deeply grateful that we have a kind and merciful god otherwise i'd be in very deep trouble so think about the challenges that jesus sends our way in the gospel all of those things are meant to get us to think how do i treat my enemies assuming i have any how do i act toward those who do not treat me well jesus says in the past it was okay love those who love you do good to those who do good to you even sinners do that he says not not with you you've got to do more you've got to be more than that love your enemies do good to those who hate you how can that be possible i would hope certainly the grace of god working in and through us can accomplish anything as long as we don't get in the way but that the kindness and mercy of god that we have received have disposed us or predisposed us to be kind and merciful in return look at david what he did towards saul the one who wanted to kill him he spared him respected his kingship did not have him killed and then jesus says hard things this is not a gospel that's meant to make you feel good it's meant to make you feel uncomfortable but if it does then it may be the kind of gospel we sometimes need to hear that we need to be challenged if we're just allowed to be normal or usual people or just ordinary everyday day in day out human beings by our faith and by jesus christ and it's not much of a faith is it and jesus isn't much of a teacher but he wants us to be more than just ordinary everyday usual normal people reacting in the usual normal ways he wants us to be great to be great greater than we ever imagined we could be because of his grace working in us take the words home with you let them be in your mind even more so in your heart live with them for the rest of the day maybe the rest of your life the lord is kind and merciful thanks be to god you uh let us now together profess our faith as we say i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things are made for us and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried then rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen brothers and sisters with confidence in our heavenly father we
