where would we be without our cars the invention of the automobile made the world a little smaller allowing us to make journeys that used to take hours in the space of a few short minutes years of evolution and car mechanics have led to most vehicles looking the same but that doesn't mean that there isn't room for innovation or eccentricity join us as we take a look at some of the most unique and remarkable one-off cars in history we're all familiar with the concept of a customized or cut and shut car made from two or more pieces of different vehicles the any car - made in 1972 by the Hanover trust company took that idea to the extreme the company wanted to showcase the full range of cars that it had available for rental or leasing but they had an unusual idea for doing so instead of laying there full range out on the forecourt they took pieces from all of them and put them together to make the ultimate hybrid loosely built around the body of a 1929 Hudson the any car - contains parts of 50 different cars ranging from 1930s classics to cars that were brand-new in the early 1970s look closely you might see pieces of a 1973 triumph a 1971 dodge a 1954 Chrysler a 1958 Volvo and even a 1971 Continental along with many more Hanover actually made three cars like this designed along similar lines finishing with the any car 3 in 1975 that one came with a second miniature electric car hidden under the hood [Music] if you're going to make a car called the time and space car then you better make sure it can travel in time and space like doctor who's TARDIS the 1956 Astra Nome time and space car couldn't do that and so that might be why the idea never caught on it got a lot of attention at the time it was built though after being shown off at the International Auto Show in New York it was featured in the front cover of Newsweek in September of that year the bizarre-looking car was designed by Richard R bibbing company and then hand-built by custom car specialist Andrew Mazzara who started with the chassis from a Nash metropolitan and then built around it using the science fiction of the era as a source of inspiration the bubble top looks like something from the Jetsons and the way the body hides the wheels almost makes the car look like it's hovering above the ground this was our Bub's idea of how all cars would look by the year 2000 we now know he was wrong but we can't fault him for trying when Rebecca Caldwell decided to take a car and turn it into a piece of art her vision was to create something that looked like a cathedral on wheels unsurprisingly she chose to name her creation the car Seadrill and it's a unique work of Gothic brilliance as a starting point she acquired a 1971 Cadillac hearse and then attached tail fins from a 1959 Cadillac to give the funeral car a little more elegance and style somewhere within that pile of welded metal on the roof is a Volkswagen Beetle although it's hard to tell that from side alone if all of the bodywork were made from steel it would be too heavy to move so she's used fiberglass wherever design allows for it to truly appreciate the quality of her work you have to get inside the car where you can get an even better view of this stained glass windows externally you'll find flying buttresses and even a few gargoyles to go with the theme despite its highly irregular appearance the car Theed rule is fully licensed to drive on and roads although we think we probably start running in the opposite direction if we saw it coming our way Texaco takes a cookie-cutter approach to designing their tankers these days but back in the 1930s they were a little more experimental when they were putting their range together the peak of their creativity came with the Texaco Doodlebug also known as the diamond T tanker which arrived in 1938 if it weren't for the Texaco branding printed on the side of the tank you could almost mistake the bright red vehicles for futuristic fire trucks these liquid transporters were made to be aerodynamic and streamlined which was a far cry from the standard box shape of other tankers of the era some people find that the half cylinder shape reminds them of a bread loaf we can sympathize with that view the cabin and the body are blended together and the streamlining has come at the cost of having a hood a cow running boards or even fenders the windshield is crafted from curved compound glass which was almost unheard of for the 1930s it's also remarkable for its height or rather for its lack of height the diamond truck stands barely six feet tall that's shorter than almost any tanker truck made before or since ever wondered how heavy concrete lane dividers are laid down on highways and motorways overnight separating lanes off to either protect road workers or ease traffic congestion if so here's your answer it's done using a barrier transfer machine also known as a road zipper sure you could use traffic cones to block off lanes or create temporary routes but a car can drive straight through cones if the driver isn't paying attention having a solid concrete barrier has proven to reduce accidents so it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that these machines save lives variations of road zipper designs have been around since the mid 1980s but they've only become common since the 1990s more recently we've seen a huge one put into service on the Golden Gate Bridge in January of 2015 the vehicles are built around shaped conveyor channels capable of lifting concrete barrier sections weighing up to a thousand pounds each linking them with steel connectors and then moving them across the highway creating cohesive new lanes in the process with the top speed of 10 miles per hour they're not particularly fast but it's still faster than working by hand there was nothing special about the Alfa Romeo 46 thb other than the fact that it was in now for Ramaiya what makes this one special is that it's the Alfa Romeo 40 60 HP aerodynamic a' built as a one-off by order of italy's count Marco Rico D in 1914 Rico D was fascinated by the airships of the era and approached coachbuilder Carrozzeria Castagna to replicate the design of an airship in car form this car was the result of that strange request in a way that makes him a pioneer of the more streamlined style of car design that would become commonplace decades later that vision didn't come without issues though difficulties with the suspension meant that the driver had to fit three whole feet behind the windshield which had a serious impact on visibility both the engine and radiator inside the body so conditions inside could get a little hot to solve the problem the count later had part of the body cut away to create a new version of the car that became known as the aerodynamic ax torpedo it was later restored to its original form in 1979 and it's now on display at Milan's Museo ster eco Alfa Romeo exhibition whether we like it or not electric vehicles are probably going to completely replace vehicles with combustion engines in the future some people believe that an electric vehicle could never be as powerful as a regular one but we have something to show those people here's the largest electric vehicle in the world the Komatsu HD 605 - 17 upper also known as the electro dumper you might be wondering how long it can go without charging so here's the kicker technically speaking it never requires charging at all you'll find this behemoth in Switzerland where it hauls lime and marl stone off mountain sides and delivers it to cement factories it charges by generating energy through its braking system as it goes downhill laden with up to 70 tonnes of ore that stored energy is then used to get the truck back up the hill to pick up the next load standing 14 feet tall and 14 feet wide with a width of 30 feet this is a giant of a vehicle that's more than capable of rivaling the performance of any gas guzzling dump truck you might find elsewhere of all the terrains that a vehicle could ever have to cross swampland and snow are the worst most vehicles and trucks would get stuck on such a surface in no time at all and that's why a more specialized vehicle is required by specialized vehicle we mean something like the Euro fifty nine twenty first built in the Russian city of meais in 1985 it owes its design and style to a vaguely similar creation called the Nami zero 157 M first built in 1973 at the time this was considered to be a great leap forward in the design of all-terrain vehicles it might look a little unwieldy and that's not exactly sleep but the Euro 5920 comes with four separate tracks capable of moving independently and thereby providing versatile maneuverability thanks to that track system it was possible for the 23 ton vehicle to move across difficult terrain carrying loads of up to eight tons at a time that's not bad for a design that basically took a truck frame and mounted it on tracks several units of the vehicle were ordered by companies working in the oil and gas industries but the production run came to an end in 1989 [Music] here's another take on the idea of an all-terrain vehicle from Canada it might look like an old-fashioned tank from the battlefields of the first world war but it's actually an amphibious craft that might prove to have value to the military forces of the modern age it's called the arctos craft on account of the fact that it was designed and built by the arctos development company of British Columbia primarily consisting of two hollow holes and Trank treads covered in spikes arctos claims that their unique vehicle can navigate any kind of terrain whether it's ice slush mud pits swamps or even water if you put the arctos craft in position it'll find a way to cross it the vehicle was built during the mid 1980s to assist oil companies working in the frozen reaches of the Arctic Circle they've even been used to evacuate stranded workers from oil rigs in the Arctic Ocean these days you'll find them working in Kazakhstan's caspian sea and china's Bohai delta according to the company that builds them you should think of them as lifeboats that can cross the ice [Music] speaking of survival vehicles here's a much earlier take on the concept from car designer Walter C Jerome he was convinced that part of the reason that car accidents resulted in so many fatalities wasn't that most cars were made from one solid body and that if the body were split in two it would afford separate protections to the driver and passenger in the front of the vehicle and any passengers in the second half of the car at the back to prove his theory he bought an old 1948 Hudson and started butchering it he cut it in two and reshaped it until it resembled the idea in his head he finalized his design in 1959 by which time it already looked like a vehicle from a bygone age when he was done he called his creation survival and attempted to attract interest from large companies who might what a mass-produce it unfortunately for Walter he didn't find any takers the fact that he wanted to charge $10,000 for each unit probably didn't help for that price in 1959 you could buy a Serie 62 Cadillac the prototype still exists today but it's a little rusty and it hasn't gone anywhere in quite a while earlier on we looked at an alleged time and space vehicle that looked like it floated on a cushion of air here's a car that really did run on an air cushion it's the 1959 Curtiss Wright model 2500 air car the Curtis Wright corporation thought that wheels were old hat by the end of the 1950's and believed that every family would soon want a hovercraft instead the air car was an attempt to get ahead of the trend in many respects it's a normal family car with space for a driver plus four passengers and a fairly conventional body design beneath the body though you'd have found a pair of 180 brake horsepower aircraft engines to lift the vehicle up accompanied by side mounted air ducts for maneuverability they added bumpers and headlights to make the vehicle look more like a regular car but in reality they weren't required sadly for Curtis Wright the public passed on the idea of placing orders and when they tried to repackage the air car for the military in 1961 they got a similarly unenthusiastic response the concept was then quietly dumped and forgotten about what is the quanta are is it an ATV a motorcycle or a car well actually it's best described as a hybrid of all three it was built by the clever minds of iron custom motors in Kharkov Ukraine with the appearance of something that that man might drive in a movie the quanta are was built in 2017 and won the Bonneville world customization championship that year they owe a little to Subaru for their design both the 2.5 liter turbo engine and the automatic transmission come from that company the 22 inch forged wheels come from volson and the b16 suspension is from Bilstein the fearsome-looking 2 seater can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in less than 2 seconds and the engine can be turned up to provide 500 horsepower if the driver so desires usually for a concept vehicle like this it comes with a few creature comforts seats are heated and there's even an incredible sound system made from six speakers two amplifiers and a subwoofer you would definitely turn heads driving down the street in your city in this car but we wouldn't want to be driving it in wet weather subscribe to the channel and turn on notifications and you will be the
