one of the complaints that's leveled most often against modern era cars is that they all look the same they might have differing badges logos and grills but there's no denying that the basic shape of a car is consistent across almost every manufacturer that hasn't always been the case though and it isn't even always the case today forget about all those boring mass-produced vehicles for a moment and join us for a look at some of the most unique exclusive and highly original cars in world history why buy a car and an office building separately if you could combine the two things together if that idea appeals to you you might be interested in the black mantis rolling office that rolls around a former nato air base in utrecht in the netherlands the unique giant vehicle was created by brothers eric and ronald rietveld who took ownership of the former air base but were told they weren't allowed to build any new permanent structures on the land they got around that by building a research center on wheels with space inside for 12 people the insect-like office has a body made from wood with a generator on the roof that provides power for the tracks on the bottom to turn allowing it to roam around the area at a top speed of three miles an hour depending on what the people inside the black mantis need the meeting table can be pulled down from the ceiling with chairs that fold out from the sides it gets its name from its obvious resemblance to the insect but to many people it looks more like an alien spaceship we have no idea why someone would ever want to attach a jet engine to a humble american school bus but we're glad that somebody did so just for the sheer spectacle of it the high speed bus which features fire decals painted along its familiar bright yellow sides is called school time and was created by indiana based inventor paul stender and his indie boys design team in 2014. stender has no practical motivation for creating the customized bus he did it purely because he wanted to entertain children and inspire them to pursue a career in engineering his vehicle is powered by a ge j79 jet engine and at full acceleration it can reach a top speed of 367 miles per hour with flames belching out of its rear end as it goes it's extremely uneconomical to run though getting it up to top speed burns up 150 gallons of fuel in just one single demonstration school time isn't permitted to be driven on america's roads but even if it were it wouldn't be practical because of the size of the jet engine there's space for only three passengers on board [Music] age is no barrier to innovation otto rhodes of colorado usa proved that in the early 1960s when he began customizing his 1953 ford f-100 pickup the moment he left school as a teenager the finished vehicle was so popular and iconic that it became the first car ever to be featured in color photographs on the pages of hot rod magazine in august 1962 he had plans to carry out further customization work but his plans were disrupted by the vietnam draft years later tom bagano of sacramento california acquired the car in a disassembled state and set about further refurbishments and amendments including a chrome drivetrain and undercarriage a ford 360 ci fe tri-power engine and a pearl white and red color scheme now known as the mountain pearl the cars gone on to appear at several prestigious car shows and inside many more hot rod magazines it's still in immaculate condition today and was last seen for sale at auction in july 2020 with a guide price of 95 000 it's a little unorthodox looking by modern standards but among hot rod enthusiasts it's considered a priceless piece of vehicular history during the 1940s and 1950s the general motors company was considering the question of what the buses of the future might look like they'd already attempted to revolutionize the vehicle class once with their streamliners but their future liner project was far more exciting only 12 of them were built across two production runs for gm's parade of progress project one between 1940 and 1941 that was stopped because of american involvement in the second world war and the other between 1953 and 1956. nine of them still exist today but only three of them are still in drivable condition these 33 foot long buses were light years ahead of their time with streamlined art deco style bodywork articulated chrome side panels automatic transmission and straight six gasoline engines each future liner had a television and a microwave of it on board and gm even experimented with the use of jet engines as opposed to gasoline engines albeit not with any great success unit 11 also known as march of tools was the last one to be sold on the open market and went for four million dollars in january 2006 during an auction in arizona if you want to make your friends believe that you've bought a brand new shiny porsche but you don't have the budget to support such a purchase you might be able to fool them by building yourself a porsche ferdinand gt3 rs it might not fool them for long though this is the slowest porsche in the world and it owes that title to the fact that it doesn't have an engine instead of starting this car by turning the ignition you put your feet on the pedals and start pushing the one and only unit of this car ever built was made by austrian hans longader who used lightweight steel as a frame for his porsche before coating the steel skeleton in plastic tubes and then using packing tape and gold leaf foil to create a skin around it hans somehow managed to attach a windshield and adjustable seats and claims the car is a perfectly pleasant and safe drive for two people even if their top speed is limited by how fast they can pedal the vehicle the contraption is steered by an upside down handlebar from a bicycle and brought to a halt using brakes from the same bike [Music] you've probably seen three wheeled cars before but never one that looks like this this is the e-ringo a concept car created by iranian designer muhammad gazelle in 2009 the three-ring vehicle has space inside for two passengers and can be adjusted to have between one and three wheels touching the road depending on how demanding the terrain it's being driven on is the car is all electric and the gyroscopic design means that it's never in danger of toppling over no matter how unsteady it might look that doesn't change the fact that it looks more than a little like a crushed beer can though muhammad's unusual design ideas weren't reserved for the exterior the interior features one steering wheel for each passenger if one person becomes tired of driving they can pass on their responsibility to their fellow traveler with the touch of a button it's environmentally friendly compact and easy to park and store but despite all those benefits sadly muhammad has struggled to find a manufacturer willing to take on his concept and mass produce it you'll struggle to get permission to drive a formula one racing car on regular roads anywhere in the world so buying a trauma antenna might be the closest you ever get to that experience in terms of both appearance and performance the spanish supercar is so exclusive that it's almost entirely unknown outside of its own country production is limited to a maximum of 12 per year and the trump montana company is so secretive that it's not even clear that the vehicles are still being made the first ever unit of the two-seater high-performance sports car was shown off at the geneva motor show in 2005 featuring a turbocharged mercedes-benz 5.5 liter v12 engine capable of 202 miles per hour and a six-speed gearbox the lightweight body is made of carbon fiber and aluminum and contains a double wishbone suspension system the car's second seat is optional and is positioned slightly behind the driver if you'd prefer one with a closed top the alternate trauma montana r model may suit your needs better want one for yourself so you're going to need to come up with half a million dollars to buy one we're traveling back in time for our next unique and exclusive car which is the layout helica created in france in 1913. each unit of the helicopter was built by the hands of its inventor marcel layatt who was motivated by his belief that combustion engines were slow cumbersome and expensive to operate rather than using a combustion engine layout favored an aircraft style propeller affixed to the front of his strange-looking vehicle he somehow managed to persuade the french authorities that they were safe to be driven on public roads despite the fact that they could accelerate to 100 miles per hour would shatter in the event of a crash and had an unfortunate potential for turning any pedestrian who got in the way of the propeller into mincemeat despite the unstable looking plywood design and the obvious dangers of getting inside the helica ayat managed to sell enough units of the vehicle to financially sustain himself between and 1913-1912 by the mid-1920s combustion engine driven cars were getting safer and faster and the helica lost whatever limited appeal it had when you create a custom vehicle and give it a name like the monster motorbike from hell you must surely have a sense of humor and a tongue-in-cheek approach to design we admire the feat of engineering that went into building this colossal australian motorbike but we don't imagine we're ever going to see it or even anything like it on the road nearest anytime soon the giant two-wheeler is 30 feet long 10 feet tall and weighs 13 tons stunt driver ray bauman spent three years putting the fearsome machine together completing his work in 2008 the wheels and tires were supplied by caterpillar and connected to a detroit diesel truck engine which is in turn mated to a six-speed allison automatic transmission the bike's frame appears to be little more than a well-disguised ladder that's been turned upside down we don't think we'd feel particularly safe riding it but since when have stunt drivers ever been concerned about safety ray claims that despite the bike's titanic size it's still capable of jumping over objects but it's better suited to crushing them an ability it showed off to impressive effect at the melbourne motor show in 2009 we've already looked at one unusual three-wheeled vehicle in this video now here's another one in the shape of the davis de van unlike the iranian-made three-wheeled gyroscope car this one was picked up and approved for mass production it's just that the mass production never happened gary davis came up with the idea for the car in the 1940s and started making them in 1947 completing two prototypes before touring them aggressively in search of a financial supporter for a larger production run the cars inspired by the design of 1940s planes contained futuristic elements for their era like built-in jacks secondary hidden headlights and disc brakes davis received 1.2 million dollars from investors and agreed to orders with 350 car dealerships but only built 13 cars he was eventually sued for failing to deliver on his orders and sentenced to prison for both fraud and grand theft but 12 of his 13 finished cars have survived to this day nobody knows why he didn't build more because the number of pre-orders suggests that the divine would have been popular but gary himself always protested his innocence and blamed production delays most of the surviving 12 units are now museum exhibits [Music] you've heard of the badmobile well here's the flatmobile this eccentric all black car was clearly inspired by the design of batman's car from the iconic television series starring adam west in the 1960s but it's not just an imitation vehicle it's a unique car in its own right and holds the guinness world record for being the lowest sitting shortest fully functional car in the world from the bottom of the wheels to its highest point it's only 19 inches tall that means it could easily drive straight underneath the clearance of most large trucks if you ducked as you did so the car was built by englishman perry watkins who still owns it today it doesn't take much power to propel a car this small or light along the roads of england upon which it's been legally certified to drive but perry decided to soup it up anyway with a self-built gas turbine jet engine that can blow flames out of the exhaust you'd never know it by looking at it but the car started life as a 1963 helman imp of which very little remains today speaking of small cars that contain jet engines here's a vehicle that's little more than a world war ii jet engine on wheels it might not be much to look at but it packs over 1 000 newton meters of torque and when it's tearing across the desert it shoots a six foot long tongue of flames behind it as it goes the jet engine is based on a 1944 german argus and is the same as the type that was used in the world's first ever v1 cruise missile the body of the car is made from the skins of crashed or retired fighter planes and the whole thing is built for supreme aerodynamics jet engine builder robert maddox teamed up with custom car builder randy grubb to create the unnamed jet car which they view as a work of art more than a car v1 cruise missiles can move at speeds of up to 500 miles per hour and while nobody's claiming the car can move quite that fast randy and robert aren't sure of its top speed as they've never dared to push it to its limits if you think you're brave enough and you want to find out for yourself you can buy it off them right now for 36 thousand dollars subscribe to the channel and turn on notifications and you
