[Music] you just have to use what we call accident avoidance does it even have a reverse Delft oh yeah no brakes but it is for burns hi I'm Dennis cage and welcome to my classic car well once again I vote in California with my good pal Jay Leno Jay remember me I'm demonstrate I don't know why it's my classic car you ever watch this show they belonged to someone else in my magician alive of their classic cars what am i mind they're mine all right well I think I'm lucky this is I called the son of the room of the giant room of the Jerome's because everything here is big engine aero engine you know prior to World War two even after World War two when you wanted to go fast it was the ultimate hot rod like now you put a Hemi engine yeah in a small dart whatever it might be or a duster but back before and right around World War two aeroplane engines very similar to automotive engines it was just bigger version of automotive engine it was the biggest thing you could get to ignitions you would have much more cubic inch displacement built an aircraft standard so what people are doing they put airplane engines into passenger cars or build a passion car around a huge airplane engine one of the first cars Dennis and I did almost 20 years ago with this one this is my hispano-suiza now this has a 1915 eighteen and a half liter hispano-suiza aero engine in it put it in a 1915 hispano-suiza chassis this is a car that was never produced but it's all his family's way sir and it's I mean it's a v8 engine but it's like a like a ninety-degree almost isn't it is it is the first aro v8 engine it was designed by Mark Birkett a Swiss engineer it was aluminum with the iron liners obviously he's got a Zenith Aero carburetor so if you go off Mulholland you're upside down the engine yeah yeah yeah that's good to have yeah this is the engine that won the war in World War one it was produced in America under the name right Martin it was produced in England under Wolseley and in France in Spain it with suspend us ways and it made 50,000 of these Wow and a lot of times you'll see sprint cars with one side blocked off and they'll run it is a big four-cylinder really not a big seminar DQ begins 4-cylinder run it in sprint cars yeah but very reliable very dependable and the usually the engine that this engine beat was this engine here this is a world war one now this is a car called rabbit one this raced at Brooklands in 1921 Wow and what this has is this is out of one of the big Zeppelin airships it's a 18.8 leader Ben's not Mercedes just Benz this is what they call the Benz Mercedes what it is is it's a Benz Zeppelin engine in a 1908 mercedes chassis that's why it says Benz Mercedes and that the logos different though yeah the logo was made up by a very famous artist named Peter hell he's probably the greatest American automotive artist but as you can see it's 4 valve 4 cylinder you can't you could just see everything that was oh everything everything going on in masters of zenith carburetors these these Oilers oil it ups but these little cups oil comes drops in there you can see how much more advanced it's very rare that someone out advanced the Germans at any point but they were still running this big 6 and with the overhead valves and that was an overhead cam 2 valve and that that that made about 300 horsepower that's made about 265 275 so these this your push rod basically push rod right here yeah and then you see the valves on you see everything moving yeah it kind of oil goes everywhere yeah but is that is that aluminum that's aluminum you Wow lightweight has always been desirable obviously and these engines aren't nearly as heavy as you think and this was a this was a chain drive car chain drive car yeah right here that looks nice and safe you don't want to drop your hand you don't want to do that no this is but this car ran at Brooklands and it runs right now the only reason I'm not taking out our because it literally has no brakes at all it has a transmission brake and it's just you've got another axle we're gonna put brakes on it that's probably smart yeah I mean it's so this is the brake that is there no this is you this is one brake and then you have a transmission brake which grabs the drive shaft drive shaft catches fire I'll take you four off different accounts and it's not the shifter this is your car yeah outside the car yeah that was quite common that was quite common the the hill has it outside the car as well oh yeah now this one had you know kind of fancier - mean you had the different browser this is a built-up car although it uses all 1915 or that error components it's never a card that was built back in the day well this really is that'll be yeah this ran at Brooklands and the same austere just kind of plate of aluminum it was a race car really that's what it was it just meant to go around the track now you remember the tank car we did the tank car does anyone forget the tank car but here's one that's kind of interesting all these guys were fighting each others with their big engine that you saw the the Swiss and the American and the Hispano yeah I'm saw the German with the big Mercedes this is the Italian contribution this car is a 1917 Fiat with a twenty-one point seven liter 6 cylinder motor figure each piston here is about the same displacement as a 327 Chevy yeah you've got overhead cam beveled ride very sophisticated four valve per cylinder is this all is this all brass no this is bronze it's bronze okay so that's hard and this year although this looks like the plumbing and heating for an apartment yeah I mean that's your carbureted this massive amounts of lots of gasoline here just literally float Bowl sized carburetors here and it's just unbelievable notice this car was raced in Argentina back in the day this one also had no brakes on it but least have the big hook up here and the idea being when the guy went off the road the hook would catch the barbed wire to keep it from ripping his head off he eventually died I think that's a custom he crashed it pretty hard and back and I think mid 30s late 30s this plate was put on here to cover where the crankcase was damaged and then the car was rebuilt and here it is did it literally have no brakes it had no brakes no now it has brakes it's got rear brakes here this is another car we bought a bunch of front axles and we're gonna put hubs in great but you've got enough break so you can take it out on the road you just have to use what we call accident avoidance but another chain drive right another change I love chain drive change arms to me is it's just the epitome of this era well it's just I mean it's a big honking chain - it is it is and this this is that you break such as it is not a duration and is it a there's a three speeder so it's a 4-speed and so forth so does it it doesn't even have a reverse no brakes but it has reverse reverse yeah we can take it out yeah take this one out well let's get it ready let me turn on the oil here is your fuel pump this is your fuel pump right here I want to get some pressure going and what you do is you hand pump it up then once the engine is running there's a little this little pump that runs off the motor it pushes the air into the tank and am i looking at the flywheel right there and that's what flywheel we a foot goes right into in between those teeth great okay there we go can you hear the see little gurgling in there there's a letter okay we've tickled it normally I lubricate the vowels but I think they're pretty lubricated but you'll see everything working here oil is on I'm not standing behind the exhaust I don't think that's smart it's not bad it's not that set the mag let's see what happens guess that's about it it's on contact horn works [Applause] oh this hasn't been started in about a month or two she just fires up she fires right up give me another new tickle pull Wells up yeah feel feel fuel again yeah I can a third pack and just yeah right that's a spinning out here like exact idea 15 wind Magneto's another tickler do you think a little cold-blooded let's see here give another tickle no I got for your precious [Music] that's why it was then expected ah diffraction is not that high [Applause] [Music] [Music] he always does check the tire stay close Jay's gonna take us out in his 1917 Fiat road rocket be nice and toasty pretty in a minute there be careful there's already you don't need it here perfect day for this it sounds like Marley's ghost with those James Rath because my villainous panel well it's a psychological break to find anything out no that's great yeah so until next time Laplace on 7th Street Jay Leno happy motoring
