[Music] hello my friends and welcome to the channel for another Baldur's Gate 3 video this time instead of focusing on one specific character build I just wanted to go over a little list of 10 things that you should have in mind when creating a character of your own with the goal of helping you bring your character concept to life in a way that's effective and fun to play I'm not exactly a Min maxing addict when it comes to creating RPG characters but I do believe that having a solid understanding of mechanics and how you can use them to your advantage when creating a character just generally results in you having more fun and feeling more powerful I don't think everyone should obsess over the numbers on their character sheet but I also know for a fact that a few easy mistakes in character creation can lead to Big headaches down the line and hopefully these tips can help you avoid that so without any further delay let's get started with tip number one and this one should be pretty obvious but for anyone who needs to hear it make sure you focus on the core ability scores for your build and class when you first start out creating a character now this is going to be different for every class and build but here's some easy bullet points on what each stat is important for strength is the key stat for most characters that use melee weapons like Fighters paladins and barbarians you hit more and will hit harder with higher strength and it also increases your jump distance which is really helpful for melee characters to close distance in combat dexterity improves your armor class making it harder to hit and it's the stat used for accuracy and damage on ranged weapons and on finesse weapons like short swords or rapiers Dex also helps you dodge traps and some spells and it helps you sneak and pick locks this stat is most important for Rangers and Rogues but it is useful on pretty much any character Constitution determines your character's HP it's used for concentration checks for spell casters and it's one of the most common saving throw stats for anything from being poisoned to being shoved in combat Constitution is important to all classes but most important to Frontline characters intelligence is a very important stat for wizards because it dictates their spell casting bonus but it's also kind of useful on Rogues to increase their Proficiency in things like investigation this skill is definitely most useful on Wizards though overall wisdom is the main stat for a few spell casting classes especially clerics Druids and Rangers wisdom is also very useful for monks because it plays into their class passives and for Rogues and Rangers wisdom is very helpful for perception checks so you don't walk into traps when sneaking around Charisma is extremely important as the primary speech check so it can be helpful on any character that wants to pass speech checks and get hidden rewards from social stuff Charisma is also the main spell casting stat for Sorcerers warlocks and bards and it affects the Paladin auras as well now the second tip I have here is also related to ability scores and specifically for wisdom and Charisma and how these stats can be easy to ignore for many classes but you might not be doing yourself a favor by ignoring them wisdom is a very important stat for saving throws against magic and lowering your wisdom too far on any character makes them very vulnerable to spells like hold person which can really hurt you in combat also from a meta gaming standpoint in Baldur's Gate 3 wisdom is used in a lot of story specific checks throughout the entire game so leaving wisdom at least at 10 will never be a bad idea Charisma is similar in that it can help you resist some annoying spells that dominate your mind but also it's just overall much easier to get through the game without a minus one penalty to every speech check that you ever make so I think putting Charisma all the way down to 8 is not ideal unless you can counter that with skill proficiencies my third tip for you is to kind of plan ahead for your equipment choices when you you're setting up your character's ability scores now you aren't going to know exactly what magic items and special bonuses that you'll get later on in the game but if you have a general idea of what kind of weapons armor and Magic you want to use it's much easier to make a focused build that plays to your strengths for example if you plan on wearing heavy armor you don't need any dexterity bonus so you can leave dexterity at 10. for medium armor you don't really need more than 14 dexterity unless you find special suits and for light armor you want to maximize your dexterity if you're using two-handed weapons you want high strength but if you're an Archer you really don't need strength for anything you can always change your stats up later with the respect but just keep in mind what gear you plan on using when you start creating your character for the next point I want to start talking about the Respec feature using the NPC Withers at your camp and how useful it can be obviously a Respec can just let you change your class completely and try something new but it can also just let you do little modifications at certain level to bump up your power for example at level 4 you can get your first ability score increase and you can use a respect to rearrange your points to get better ability scores and hit higher thresholds or say you found your first set of plate mail for your fighter well you can respect and drop all of your dexterity points because you don't need them anymore and you can put those points somewhere else another tip here while we're talking about respecting characters is that you should remember that you can respect any of your companion characters to anything you want so you can always fit your favorite companion characters into your team even if their Base Class doesn't quite fit your team composition you like Gail but you also want to play a wizard no problem make him a heavy armor fighter you like lazel but you're already playing a fighter no problem just make her a paladin this tip might not make your character more powerful but it can make your team work for you regardless of who you want to take on your adventures my final tip when it comes to respecting characters is to think about changing up your stats when you find cool magic items that increase your ability scores there are several magic items in Baldur's Gate 3 that increase different ability scores to 17 18 or even higher with their magic effects once you get these on your character you can Respec and drop all of your base points out of that ability and put them somewhere else by doing this with a few magic items you can end up with an extremely well-rounded character that really doesn't have any weaknesses by the end of the game the next tip I have is about multi-classing and how it can be a very powerful tool for your character but can also be a trap that leaves you very underwhelmed if you make the wrong choice multi-classing allows you to add levels of another class to your character so you can be a rogue Ranger hybrid or a fighter Paladin hybrid or any combination you can think of however if you multi-class at random or at weird levels you won't really get big benefits out of it a lot of the time for the most part you want to stay on one class from level one to five unless you have a very specific idea in mind most classes get a big bonus of some kind at level 5 such as an extra attack on a fighter or a level 3 spell slot and all classes will get a feat at level four generally these power spikes are more useful early on than any class features from another class so if you can be patient wait until Level 6 before you multi-class you also should read up on what each class gets at certain levels so you can be tactical about how many levels you take in a certain class for example you can do amazing things with just two levels of fighter on any build because you get action Surge and action surge is just amazing on a similar note when planning out your character build you should pay attention to when you get Feats and try to make sure you aren't missing out on Feats due to multi-classing for example every class gets a feat every four levels so level 4 8 12. so if you made a build with seven levels of one class three of another and two of another you would only get one feet in total at level 12 whereas if you did eight levels in one class and four on another you would get three Feats to power up your build if you mix fighter into your build you can also get extra Feats since they get a bonus feat at level 6 and level ten so if you're mixing fighter into anything sometimes taking that sixth level can get you a nice little boost for tip number nine when you're creating a character pay attention to what you get for racial passives and consider how that will synergize with your chosen class because sometimes this can give you big benefits for example half Orcs can resist death once per day and they hit harder with critical hits making them Prime targets for melee builds like Fighters or barbarians drows get some useful illusion magic humans get a bonus skill proficiency which is great for Rogues elves get automatic proficiency with many weapons making it useful for battle mage classes Dragonborn gets free Elemental resistance which is just helpful for anything there's a lot of different ways to take advantage of this stuff so keep that in mind while creating your build and for my 10th tip in this video I just want to say that for any spellcasters out there especially warlocks and Sorcerers make sure you try and pick your spells carefully and pick spells that you think you'll actually use often there's a ton of different spells in Baldur's Gate and many of them sound fun and interesting but then hours later you'll realize that you haven't cast it a single time in your playthrough even though it sounds pretty nifty definitely experiment with stuff and try it out if it sounds fun to you but if you find a spell on your hot bar that just isn't really doing anything for you that's just a wasted spot on your character sheet you can always respect to pick a new spell or replace it on a level up so don't weigh yourself down with useless magic that's more effective in tabletop DND than it is in Baldur's Gate and finally for the bonus tip number 11 is to just ignore all of my advice create whatever you want and have fun with it I love create dating characters and I love helping people create good characters of their own that being said I believe that the satisfaction of making your own choices and not letting some random guy on the internet min max your every decision is generally the most satisfying path to take so take my advice and keep it in mind but don't let anyone bully you into dropping your character concept because it isn't Min maxed or it doesn't reach the top of the power curve you will be more satisfied beating the game your way almost guaranteed well that basically covers it for this video and I hope you find some of this advice helpful while creating your next character I don't claim to be an expert but I've played D for over a decade and one of my favorite things is helping people create characters that are fun and effective so I hope this helps out thanks for checking out the video I've got links to my twitch stream and Discord server down below for anyone interested and until next time stay safe out there
