I am away in London with my daughter these few days some of the restaurants we visited are very good; if you want to know more please commend now let's talk about ridges on nails; this is common at the end of this video I'll talk about the role of a vitamin in nail problems the nail is made in the matrix at the root of the nail plate it is right beneath the skin at the junction between the nail and the skin rapidly growing cells(keratinocytes) in the matrix evolve to become hard and flat in a nail of 1mm thickness there are 25 layers of these specialized cells to support nail growth keratinocytes in the matrix need ample blood supply it follows that any problems reducing blood supply to the matrix can cause thinning of the nails one cardinal sign of nail thinning is ridging ridging can just be a result of normal aging as blood supply is poorer as we get older it can result from eczema or psoriasis where skin inflammation around the matrix affect blood supply moreover frequent trauma/contact with water damage the matrix and may cause ridging there is an autoimmune disease called lichen planus white blood cells attack keratinocytes in the nail, skin and mucous membranes in lichen Plans the nail becomes thin and ridging are seen It may even breaks in the middle in the mouth there are white streaks on the mucous membrane as keratinocytes are damaged in the skin there may be red rashes this disease is often overlooked and if you have nail ridging together with rash in skin and buccal cavity do see a doctor as you can see this way any diseases affecting blood supply to the fingers may cause ridging of the nails examples include rheumatoid arthritis where blood vessels around matrix is inflamed another example is peripheral vascular disease where blood vessels are blocked by cholesterol plaques conditions like low thyroid hormone and severe anaemia can also cause ridging of the nails you may be told to take biotin(vitamins B7) to rejuvenate the nails biotin has a role in nail growth but evidence supporting its therapeutic role in nail problems is weak if other conditions is causing the nail changed it is always better to treat them first biotin may have a role in nail ridging as a result of aging but beware it may interfere with other medical investigations thanks for watching and I'll see you soon
