today let's talk about intermittent fasting some claimed it is of benefit in a variety of diseases is it true? there are 2 main forms of intermittent fasting one is to limit food intake to 6-8 hours within a say ie not taking 3 meals a day but eat within a 6 hours interval and fast in the remaining 18 hours another form is to take 3 meals a day 5 days a week and 1 meal daily in the remaining 2 days lack of carbohydrates from food in fasting forces the body to burn protein and fat for energy evidence shows intermittent fasting can help us lose weight and achieve better blood pressure and sugar level notice that if you prefer the 6 hours eating 18 hours fasting don't eat junk food; it's always better to adopt Mediterranean diet the down side of intermittent fasting is when there is no carbohydrates to generate energy the human body is forced to use other mode of fuel it's like natural gas and coal both can generate heat when burnt in fasting the body will adapt and use fat and protein as energy sources this happens also in starvation/war/famine and eating disorders burning fat is good but the main store of protein is in our muscles using protein as energy source will cause muscle wasting or sarcopenia(see this video) this is particularly undesirable in the elderly some people think it is not necessary to exercise when fasting but resistant exercise can prevent muscle loss so if you try intermittent fasting some exercise will only do you good as for the claims that fasting can heal other illnesses I don't think those are backed by evidence like keto diet there are many schools of intermittent fasting some people recommend fasting for over 1 week you may remember the singer in the Carpenters died of anorexia nervosa and some POW in WWII when started eating after starvation died suddenly there is an entity called refeeding syndrome in starvation the body undergoes drastic changes with very different metabolism sudden refeeding will cause significant changes in electrolytes and fluid which can be fatal normally the body uses carbohydrates to generate energy; this process requires some electrolytes notably phosphate/potassium and magnesium in starvation when the body uses fat and protein as energy sources these electrolytes are not needed sudden refeeding force the body to metabolize carbohydrates; with this there is a need for phosphate/potassium and magnesium these electrolytes will be drawn from the blood into cells to generate energy blood phosphate/potassium and magnesium will suddenly fall to a dangerous level which causes weakness, vomiting, fit, irregular heart rate, coma, heart muscle damage and death which is called refeeding syndrome; yet I must stress fasting of less than 1 week duration rarely cause this problem; but before starting fasting it is always prudent to ask your doctor
