do cold hands/feet a sign of serious illness? most cases of cold extremities are related to poor blood supply at the end of this video I will tell you how to check your blood supply we are warm blooded animals: ie our body have to generate heat this heat is carried around the body in our blood in cold weather blood vessels under exposed skin will constrict(become narrow) and blood is diverted away from the surface to reduce heat loss for the same reason taking temperature in the ear/forehead often underestimate the body temperature our normal temperature of 37.5C is the 'core' temperature deep inside us only rectal temperature gives a good measurement of core temperature skin in our ears/forehead are prone to be affected by constriction of blood vessels in any case cold hands/feet in low temperature is a normal physiological process now peripheral vascular disease is a common condition causing cold hands/feet it is the blocking of large blood vessels supplying the extremities by lipid plaques it can cause claudication: calf pain on exercise and improves with rest because inadequate blood and thus oxygen supply to muscles during exercise cause pain in this picture the leg on your right is peripheral vascular disease it looks shinny because there will be a loss of hair with chronic lack of blood supply in severe case there will be ulcers which are difficult to heal it may progress to necrosis(blackening/tissue death) of the toes in some cases cold hands/feet can occur without blockage of blood vessels eg in Reynaud Syndrome/phenomenon there is excessive constriction of blood vessels in the hands/feet on exposure to cold as shown in the hands on the left side: it virtually becomes white with poor blood supply this is followed by bluish patches on the fingers as deoxygenated blood collect after a few minutes or even hours there will be a compensatory dilatation of blood vessels with loads of blood flowing into the hands so they turn red and may be throbbing Reynaud phenomenon is closely related to lupus it is not dangerous and may be controlled by antihypertensive drugs in peripheral neuropathy there may be cold extremities blood supply is normal but the nerves in the limbs are diseased that they convey a false cold sensation even when the legs are warm to test limb blood supply apply pressure on a nail the nail bed/skin under the nail will turn white as blood is squeezed away from the capillaries there when you remove the pressure the white part should turn red immediately when the capillary refills if it remain white for a long time it may indicate poor blood supply thanks for watching and I'll see you soon
