you know this car was running 15 Barry White's shooting for the stars we did have it hooked to the airplane he's got a rocket to help him get there you know that's hair Rikki Rockett I got a poison album on final rock'n'roll royalty wow this is so cool but Wilburys poison dart be a hit there isn't a lot of Emme darts out there or miss the market and cost him a fortune we're doing something we haven't done and that's we're going no reserve so this cars gonna sell [Music] goodbye the Barry White Way just rip that out of there find a wreck it's exactly what we're looking for sweets or anything get the right people the right parts and go to work and hope it's flawless someone wants to buy it that's how you get from wrecks to riches [Music] muscle-car maestro berry why he knows good old bones when he sees them why don't you take them through this way too tall to them I'm not having a prop at all I noticed over the past nine months he's turned nine recs like these teeny super muscle cars for auction but the challenge was ten cars absolutely great finale car for their last car Barry and pink guy Tony Korea are scouring racks for something special [Music] they'll be selling it at the Russo and Steele auction in Scottsdale Arizona it's a muscle-car event and hundreds will be competing for attention and [Music] and Barry said himself another challenge nine super muscle cars she's so confident about number ten he's already committed sin we'll sell for the best big win or lose [Music] this is a demon or a dart abouts how about the smaller car yeah let's go with this marker small car with a big motor and it's always fun well they're fun to drive no dis a monster burnouts one the Dodge Dart it was Mopars entry into the small car market small sharp and quick it lived up to its name by the mid sixties all the car companies had formulated a plan on how they were gonna make their muscle cars they've gone from taking full-size cars and putting a big motor in to taking a midsize car from that big motor and then they started getting down into the small cars because weight is the enemy [Music] in its day the Hemi dart had the fastest acceleration of any car on the track it was a big selling point so what they wanted to do was actually put a giant motor in this little dart and the biggest thing they had was a 426 Hemi which is a pretty legendary motor now that was more than 30 years ago these days those old darts are going nowhere fast you know this car stock just a couple of years ago was running 15 we did have it hooked to the airplane we're already lucky we got a rabbit's foot did ya this could be their lucky day if the price is right so far so good outside of Frank's BS you know bad actually it's a really nice car Frank was holding now on I don't know guys waiting couple grand this is a couple grand how about a single gram you know what Frank's a good guy I think we'll give 1,500 I just have a couple more friends like you I could just go out of business I guess we got a deal then as much as I hate to part with this let it go cuz it's going to a good cause 1,500 bucks has bought Barry a brand new wreck now we have to walk the dart is about to be reborn Chris is sketching its transformation it's a fast little car so I think it needs to be bright it needs to be eye-catching something in the orange family we want something that's gonna grab your eye if I do a little bit of blacks tribe maybe that bumblebee stripe around the back into the car like they used to do we'll put as much time as we can on to the car without ruining the looks of the car I put the big flat scoop on it like the Superstock a car's head by the time we get done with it gonna look like the dart that they never made that shit for a super muscle car to most components will be brand new state-of-the-art they only keep the body can't really go wrong with this all the bumpers are good all the stainless around the windows are good we got one little quarter fix but only invoice to fix that no time back there's no finesse as the team strips out anything they don't need this cars got some issues but we don't have to fight any Rostov the previous owners spent a lot of money installing side pipes too bad here dollar for dent this is a good wreck but somewhere back down the road it got bent out of shape with a big hint for the quarter panel the whole thing the whole inside garvey know is going to deliver a little tough love body shaft style but what he's doing right now he's taking a port of power to it actually it's a hydraulic jack he's spreading the panel back to where it belongs so what is this he's probably put attachments on it and uh keep watch it's pretty pretty phenomenal if people aren't useful with that bodywork like this but you know it's just going to show you even the worst parts can be fixed sometimes [Music] while the body guys undo 30 years hard living there's another mission going on Berry's decided that dart needs a heavy engine the Hemi was all in the head of the car had a hemispherical combustion chamber the only engine in the 60s that they had was a 426 cubic inch displacement that had those heads on a brand-new hemant is expensive well over 10 grand ferries looking to save money an original 426 is rare and could take months to find but Chris has a plan B four-forty is a very similar motor but it's not the exact same thing there is a company out there now that makes a head that bolts onto the 440 that converts it to a Hemi because it has the hemispherical combustion chamber and that's what we're trying to do and hopefully that's going to work back in the bodyshop the dart isn't quite as straight as an arrow we just got to make one good hard pull on the quarter panel on the outside we try to port a parrot from the inside and we just need that pull on the outside these guys are amazing they can you know with a stick and a rock and a piece of wire they can pretty much fix anything so they got it all straightened back out and beat it back straight can't tell the difference now [Music] this is unfamiliar territory for Barry he's ahead of the game the speedometer has barely nudged five grand and 40 hours work the idea is to not drop the ball and not have the parts I would venture to say this car probably painted with any luck by the end of the weekend after nine back-breaking cars Barry's finally on target with the Darcys mrs. Shirley this time nothing can go along [Music] [Music] auto auctions are where car makers show Peugeot we won't find tire kickers at deluso and steel muscle car auction in Scottsdale Arizona these buyers can smell lemon [Music] Barry White's committed to sell his Dodge Dart here at any price or news he's really got three weeks to go but he's unusually confident there's a secret weapon on its way [Music] he's obviously a man into his cars but more than that he's a Mopar guru but we only get 60 some-odd Mopars in my own over the years everything from low full chassis cars to toss a little single four-barrel nitrous moon Beals plans worked with Barry before as car a purple GTX made a killing at auction they're hoping they can get the same result with a dart so we get rid of the torsion bars steering box we go to Adam Mustang two spindles so exactly yeah Barry's giving Ronna briefing and an open checkbook we've got our motor plates down to the point where we can use them with a with power steering with 13 systems with air conditioning which I know you're big fan of so I mean this car is gonna have all the creature comforts on it that's what we need that's the whole idea behind a super muscle car yeah give it all the creature comforts but and give it the super big horsepower yeah well we want to run you know maybe 11 second ETS with the a/c on and the two swearin so bronze specialties are steering and suspension the dart needs a lot of work on both their unibody design which is a good design but when doing something like this we put a lot of horsepower to it it's a good idea to do something to improve the integrity of the front end the dirts front end just wasn't designed for the super muscle car treatment it was one of those things everybody said you can't build it because they don't have the right crossmember and you can't do this can't do that then Ron says I'll make you a front crossmember all right out with the old in with the new [Music] Ron's going to add some muscle of his own we're gonna run a couple of struts from the firewall up to the front frame and then coming off of that we're gonna have the braces for the shock towers and we can also tie this into the motor plate so we can actually triangulate the whole front frame of the car the unique tubular bracing will give the darkness strength it needs to carry the new engine the problem is is it's a short short notice kind of deal I think you can do something for me with the front end coming together fast time's running out for Chris to find that engine I'll see what I can do thanks we're going after kind of a Hemi dart theme and those were rare cars to begin with we don't want to cop out and put something else in there that doesn't belong it's heavy or nothing with the smart bets on nothing and to get somebody to supply a Hemi is like trying to it's like the most impossible thing in the world to do everywhere they look they're drawing a blank [Music] yeah do you know if you got anything coming in luckily bronze brought his own he's not that strong this is a mock-up to check engine size against the new suspension Oh mock-up idea is is just what it says a mock-up you know so that we don't have to deal with trying to fit something once when we have the real parts and it's heavy you know two three guys can just set this plastic block and transitions it's a lot easier [Music] if the Hemi does finally arrive it should fit like a glove they won't delay the auction until they found that engine this speed shop has to ride its luck and Barry is heading further into the red how about another 5 grand for paint it doesn't sound very muscle car but the color they've decided on is called Molly orange Tony's a fan oh yeah 30 to 40 hot rod that was the same color I've always enjoyed that car people always like the color it's a bright color let's go look good with black stripes on [Music] the dart will get three coats of orange and another three of clear to bring it up to show car standard yeah my brother is good I know he helped rehab a piece of Barry's already some 10 grand into this dart and 80 work hours but you can't take a car to auction without an engine and they still don't have one after calling everybody that makes a Hemi we've come to the conclusion that everybody's out of stock they either can't get a block or they make parts but they've got such a long backorder that they can't help us out fast enough [Music] [Music] wails at the Russo and Steele muscle car auction in Arizona [Music] big players with big money to spend berries committed to sell here at any price you might well find himself swimming with sharks [Music] they're in a celebrating kind of mood at the speed shop two weeks to auction and Chris has found a Hemi engine in the end all it took was desperation and a ton of berries mines $14,000 at least we have something located it's for 72 instead of 426 so it's a little bit bigger motor which it makes more power and you know you can never have too much power Barry wanted something cheaper but they couldn't wait any longer so the dart is getting a brand new Hema from the factory the guys have been giving me a better crap for buying a 1500 auto car and putting a $14,000 in Janette the engines put the speedometer up over $30,000 and a hundred and fifty hours work time but Chris is looking on the bright side this is gonna have the look that it needs to have for this car and you know hopefully that adds a lot to the value there isn't a lot of Kimi darts out there originally I think they made a handful of them I can't remember the exact numbers but it was pretty low and even to make a clone I haven't seen a lot of clone cars so it should be interesting to see what the oxygens going for man you're strong the dirt will be nose-heavy so the next issue is handling but Mopar guru Ron has come up with a kit that's stronger and a massive 100 pounds lighter the back bow either one we've got a power version going into this car so cars gonna be really effortless to steer it's gonna have a real desirable driving characteristics it's gonna be lighter it's gonna look better it's just got the best of all worlds [Music] the look is 60s nostalgia but the dart should feel nothing but rock solid super muscle car we're trying to bring all the new things into it it's got coil over front end you know coil over shocks rather than the torsion bar so we're getting rid of torsion bars and not getting rid of the original cane member its power rack and pinion steering in it really looking forward to getting that all up inside the car now that they've got a bigger engine than they bargained for they're taking no chances they're going to reinforce the chassis for this monster [Music] when the car launches it puts a phenomenal amount of stress on a chassis it literally tries to twist it like this so that motor plate up front begins the process of resisting that torsional twist as that stress continues on you know we've got this area in the 4-pin where there is nothing to resist that twisting the subframe connectors are going to do that he's the man mozzies here there's only one thing Ron loves more than mopars music all right rock'n roller a card I suppose really it's pretty much stuck in the 80s and 90s stuck going bald Ron's favorite band 80 sensation poison [Music] that's got Chris to thinking about a unique way to add some value Ron's been down here for a while working on this dart with us and you know he's a he's a big rock star kind of guy so that kind of gave me the idea of maybe going after one of the old hair bands from the 80s I think it would be fun it had a creative edge to the project so what we're gonna do is get Rikki Rockett from the band Poison in here and we're gonna make the poison dart the poison dart why didn't Barry think of that hey Barry yep that can get some of the guys from poison over here it'd be kind of cool it's a big rock band they were pretty cool back in the 80s and 90s and and I thought Ron I get a kick out of maybe these guys would do I think it's a great idea but how you gonna get a rock star when you can't get the parts for the car well yeah got a little bit more in at the record gave me that to it some of the birds places while chris is chasing onstage power berry is sticking to the kind he knows best the darts a small car an engine this size was always going to be a tight suite with the extra steering and suspension jammed in there too Barry's got a problem [Music] the Hemi doesn't fit it's jammed against the new subframe they've pushed the envelope half an inch too far it's just a week before auction buyers at the Russo and Steele auction in Scottsdale Arizona have seen it all unless you've got something special they'll keep their bidding hand in their pocket in less than a week Barry's got to impress he's selling no matter how low a bid very few Hemi darts were ever made berries finding out why it's hard to get an engine this big into a car this small especially if you want to jam in a power steering rack - it's a power rack and that's so kind of in the car cuz we want power sharing in it the engines oil pan needs to clear that rack it's an expensive half-inch they're missing do you think for 14 grand you just get a panda it could have put 2 GM motors in the trunk 2 GM motors and a front one in the passenger seat this is no time to be sentimental that pristine factory Hemi engine is going to get a new oil pan with a piece cut out the inner part was really really tight in these cars and the relationship of the rack to the motor gets tighter so what we've done is to make clearance for the rack and pinion you know for modernizing suspension you have a small price to pay which is a slight notch in your oil plan that little notch needs to make a world of difference it fits just [Music] they're back in business and in a hurry they only got five days to get this car done and about ten days worth of work to do [Music] bumper-to-bumper this dark will be stronger and handle better than anything they dreamt of when they built the original any of the Hemi cars when I had a date of 68 that's what we put in here [Music] to complete the package a super muscle car set of performance pipes that will deliver horsepower and sound like music to the ears of any poison fan this one should sound really good it's a short car small mufflers big motor should be really aggressive it should you know blow the smoke out when we do the burnout and you know clean curbs while it's doing that you know dust the street off for us the speedometer has jumped over $35,000 and two hundred hours berries burning money he might not make back fact is he rarely sees darts and auctions maybe there's no market for these mini Mopars I have not seen one Hemi dart yet I saw one last year at an auction but it was an original one it was a kind of a landmark car but I don't see you don't see them going through people don't clone them off you know people don't make super muscle cars at them I mean this thing's got all the tricky stuff you could get in it you know performance wise and suspension wise so we'll see what Barry needs is an unbiased opinion and here comes one now Ricky rockets incoming I guess he's a car guy so he's got a couple old muscle cars himself and a little rat rod and stuff so should be pretty fun for everybody with the tight deadlines Ron hasn't had a chance to to let his hair down that's about to change [Music] [Music] Hameed art projects the nova of the mopar world absolutely I'm gonna get killed by Mopar guys there's a Mopar guy on the other side meeting Rikki Rockett who would have thought working on cars I'd get to meet some rock-and-roll stars that this is what Ron builds is all the front suspension yeah this is your thing huh that's my thing man a little bit it seems they've convened a meeting of the corona branch of the mutual admiration society Ricky loves the dart if there's any intention to set out put nostalgia on top of technology that's it right there I mean that's probably one of the most efficient cars on every level that I've ever seen every piece of that is designed by an artisan and built by an artisan and it's just incredible you know I'm just I'm very jealous Rippey has worked with artisans in his time remember that hairdo if somebody else comes in and says you know if they like the way the car looks that just makes it all worthwhile so we're all out here kicking our chicken ass on the car and trying to get something accomplished here and somebody comes along and compliments if that's your adding value to his vinyl all right so right on the record huh let's cool it to have just a different person coming to look at the car to I don't know just get done the spin on it you know we all think that what we like is cool but I like other people look at it you know they have different opinions and tastes and see if they like we were gonna call this car the poison dart make it works well together I want to see if you mind signing that console port no not at all Chris had an ulterior motive for getting Ricki down here that little extra selling point for the dart very cool we do it thank right on wow this is too cool [Music] now a rockstar car needs rockstar wheels Chris is on the job we wanted to go for the ultimate super muscle car wheel which is called the Magnum 500 it's kind of a delicate looking will we could say they actually blacked out a large portion of the wheel to make it look lighter than action was so what we wanted to do is basically recreate that but kind of make it our own style I think it's not enough the wheels do look great just not on this car they're too big I was trying to get the wheels as deep as possible give her more of a racy look you know it's still too tight I cut some of the lip off and on the one side it was probably gonna work okay got it on to the other side here this it's too far off we've got a little bit of bulbs on that tire I'm just rubbing outside of the fender so we're gonna dismount and run over to intro they're gonna recoup before me you can take a little bolts out and then kind of mounting something we're gonna help oh yeah I've come out making money now get some faster half-inch more backspace okay thank you [Music] it's another delay in just two days to go but Barry can't worry about that now it's time to hear what $14,000 worth of Hemi engine sounds like in a $1,500 Dodge Dart there's a hint of muscle there hey started C runs backwards so I need to bring it this way like that it's gone awfully quiet in the speed shop [Music] any muscle car can look good on the street but at the Russo and Steele auction in Scottsdale Arizona only the best stand out and attract the big money in two days Berry will sell the dart here at any price he could go bust if he can't get it started it's flooded okay if it is only flooding it should be a quick fix clear the plugs and try again just pumped it a few times more than I should've probably and flooded thinking it was a dry engine usually you got a pump a quite a bit 472 Hemi 525 horsepower and you can hear every one of them [Music] this one sounds like it's got a nice cam and stuff but we got magnaflow exhaust the three inch stainless which is a lot bigger and nastier than we had on the other one perfect way thank Tony pretty nasty up that thing is that gives it a rumble that's what this car needs it you know when you pull it onto the stage for the auction you got to know it's a Hemi you know and it sounds good I'm really happy with the way it sounds it growls like a tiger now for the stripes the Mopar details that will make it stand out from the pack the bumblebee stripe is kind of a famous stripe from back in the 60s it was a look that they were known for of having a stripe that wrap all the way around the car so we wanted to capture that image but of course we got to change it up a little bit so we're gonna put the bass MC lettering right here in the middle to give it our own special touch [Music] Barry's been hanging out for the new wheels and he's not disappointed the windows that were gonna paint are gonna be like a metallic black come almost a charcoal gray in color and I think it's gonna actually really accent the wheel sighs I think they're gonna look great with all the little bolts around them it's a very racy looking wheel they're perfect it turned out just right I like the color it's a perfect great so that complements the polish balloon the wheel came out bitchin that's that's the best wheel I think we've gotten them the best we got [Music] the final touches are going in the signed center console and the one-of-a-kind dashboard plaque the dart is officially poisoned a rock star's car from rubber to roof with the paint job and new wheels the darts nudge to spend domitor up to $45,000 and 220 work hours it's a big investment but it shows [Music] berries created a modern reality out of a 60s dream car this car is really bitchin I'm really happy I wouldn't mind on one of these myself it's a car unlike anything else on or off the street it's kind of got that Jetson 60s look you know which I really think it's cool 69 Dart that interior with the little pleats all the way down just really looks cool [Music] barely hidden beneath the hood that massive 472 Hemi power plant [Music] they've taken a mínimo part and turned it into a street-legal monster the entire frame stronger and lighter the steering replaced with modern rack and pinion every weakness of 60s construction overcome with modern technology we're making a 60s car better than it was more fun to drive you can get out and run it it's got big power it goes around the corner if you buy this car you will not pass yourself driving down the street there's no arguing that dart is beautiful but berries got a bigger question to worry about will it sell because he has laid it all on the line with this car we're doing something we haven't done through the whole series and that's we're going no reserve so this car is gonna sell if it sells for twenty thousand dollars it's gonna sell Russo and Steele is a serious option in Scottsdale Arizona custom builders need their excuses of the door or your car is good enough or you take it home again you can't even get inside the tent unless you're a registered bidder which means every person here has money to spend if you like muscle cars this is Disneyland this is Disneyland Six Flags and then Florida it's all rolled into one here in this place with these cars just getting noticed is an achievement it's got everything going for order to the black stripe and a have any molar on that's what everybody wants nowadays when you look at it if the welds are correct everything is correct the placement is correct the serpentine belt you look down it's all lined up square I mean you know the fundamental basics it's been finished with a lot of attention to detail this thing's out of control it's gonna be a lot of fun the dart does have one advantage and it's exactly what Barry had in mind when he chose it it's the only Hemi dart here so that's a good thing [Music] the closest thing is this later model dodge based around the dart this is a room of smart buyers not generous ones and this is a little bit later take off of the Darby they've put a bunch of different spins on his scamp and they had a bunch of Derrick names form but they're all based on the same card the early sales aren't breaking any records [Music] Barry's committed to sell here no matter what the price he's backing himself and the poison dart cars being a heavy carton you know if everybody likes the Hemi car so we'll just have to see how that all plays out [Music] the Russo and Steele auction in Scottsdale Arizona is muscle car Mecca the biggest baddest machines and buyers who know how to spot a weakness no matter how well it's hidden Barry White thinks his Hemi dart is bulletproof it's better big he's committed to sell today regardless of price I'd like it to go big and it would kind of put a final period on our old tin card bill but you never know that's no reserve we'll see what happens oh yeah we'll see what everybody thinks of it now that's the key 41,000 anti close the bid at $40,000 gonna take one on the others to take the car that should go pretty good I think if it doesn't I'll be real disappointed it's not gonna be the end of the world for us but I'll be disappointed if it doesn't go good [Music] after nine cars this is the final test for very there's nothing left to prove to anyone but himself and his accountant if the dart sells for less than the forty five thousand a nose dart to pay you know this car just a couple of years ago was running fifteen when they found this wreck if it was the jewel of the junkyard as much as I hate to part with this fifteen hundred bucks caught on the mountain potential first exceptionally well exceptionally well but it was a world of pain for Chris who had to find the Hemi engine it's like the most impossible thing in the world to do the Mopar guru Ron gave the dart racing suspension and steering the old frame would have buckled under 525 horsepower of the end the muscle guys wouldn't give me a bunch of crap find a fifteen hundred dollar car put $14,000 engine in Ricky Lockett added a little walking wall now that's here and the tag poison dart [Music] [Applause] [Music] this guy's a longtime super muscle car fan I've got six thousand party time that's more than covering the 45 Barry spent there II can't say they're not trying to find him a few extra bucks [Music] so at 60,000 the poison darts a winner a little bit super muscle a little bit rock n roll and better yet it went to a face looks the way it sets so I was prepared to come in here to see if I can own that car pretty sick pretty exciting I'm thrilled to death for him to have the car I think it's awesome it doesn't get any better net will throw a poison CD in whipper Bob [Laughter] [Music] over ten cars Barry White has created a dynasty gleaming new technology throbbing with echoes of the good old days I'm finding hard to believe it actually did 10 cars my favorite one of course was gangrene I like the horsepower I like the the noise and the thumping deadly level Ducklin which was the biggest car we did with a 64 Mercury Marauder my personal favorite was probably the little red Mustang just because I'm a Ford guy the Chevelle that's my favorite car because I just that car just totally came out awesome [Applause] super muscle car lovers buying memories some from the past some yet to happen [Applause] very in the speed shop team known biggest riches in these racks I actually got to build the whole list of cars that I've always wanted to have [Music] [Music]
