Worlds First Deep Look under the Tesla Model S Plaid

last week we had a blast taking the off-road tesla off-road and we also tried to supercharge the car and the funniest thing happened it actually worked yes after i paid the 48 balance from the previous owner i was able to charge yes tesla allows supercharging access to salvage cars now but at the end of the day i was skeptical i've been bamboozled before and it's like an ex-girlfriend that cheated on you 128 times and went to therapy for one day and then came back and said wait i've changed well it turns out she didn't change it was an accident and tesla rolled back all supercharging access on prior salvage cars man it sure was a beautiful three days wasn't it i'm not even mad it's not my car and not my problem feel free to put that video in your watch later list it's on the screen right now but that's why i continue to drive the rs7 the i8 clown shoe sherp 06 mini cooper and humvee you name it now if you drive an ev those cars may sound gross and icky to you but i could pick any of those cars and not have to worry about whether or not certain features are going to work in the morning or the camera that's always pointing at my face to make sure everything is okay isn't really recording me at all times but my cars are old school old tech and inefficient but i own every aspect of them and you can get parts which is important to me as is right to repair so make is unreal it was also the fastest production car in the world for a few weeks until the rimac came out and do me a favor stop comparing the rimac to the plaid there isn't a single rimac owner that would ever say man i should have got a plaid the rimac is so expensive the taxes on it are equivalent to a fully optioned tesla plaid but to make the fanboys feel better i'll do what they always do i'll add some criteria to make them feel better the tesla plaid is the fastest car in the world under half a million dollars or better yet the fastest four-door car in the world you happy now it's damn fast nothing except for the highest of highly modified gas cars can touch it and you have a gas car that runs nines most people don't drive them every day anyways and they're probably broken or waiting for parts in the garage now there's a ton of youtube videos on them oh my god [Music] it's the hot thing right now on how fast they are even reviews on them people ask me to do a review but then marquez brownlee made a great review on the plaid and he looks just like me so it's basically the same thing everyone likes pushing the go pedal but no one really takes the top off to see what's this thing what's up so what we're doing is we're jacking this up um they seem to have changed quite a bit on this um the the lifting pads are different ones oh it's a three brick lego yeah it's i would set up like a three set of two surprises [Music] they went for argyle instead of plaid they did a diamond finish wow it's uh it's flat very flattering like more font than the three there's not even ribs on this this is like that's awesome they have the rib on the one on the outside edge but there's nothing in the middle is it structural or is it the floppy like the three one [Music] it's it's a shell i think it's aluminum aluminum yeah aluminium the fact that this is completely flat including right to the belly pants there's like almost nothing for anything to catch on so that's that's some serious aerodynamics i can tell the rear suspension is completely different oh yeah they went with the uh the three style set up but they went with aluminum arms instead of steel dude that has the size of a woman's foot yeah it's it's gigantic for a breakout comparison why did you say that yeah so they started this on the other the newer s's before they went and changed over they put on those on the h-arms in the back you see how many toe truck drivers are coming up with the big j-hooks poking on the arms and yanking them out of the car yeah there's so there's see this right here this is an acceleration sensor right here yeah right on the shock itself this is how this is a pretty pictogram that you see over the shocks going up and down that's these and these are the the adjusters for the shocks yeah that's one serious strut man i hate to think of what that would take to fix if those air struts are like almost like what 12 1500 a strut yeah just the air stride how much is that there we go so it looks like the same steering rack they they've been using so far wow look at that the battery bolts all the way up here to the control arm area subframe yeah so they're coming further forward with it i don't know if this is part of the battery pack or bat no that's pack that is pack all the way up that's right here extending his range as much as they can yeah yeah it literally comes to right at this edge but i see the power train up here oh yeah so there is a lump in the front of the pack but it's not as big as the other one was so that's why the power tree is sitting lower so you can see it see that's the cooler notes the thing i'm highlighting right now is cool at the top of the pack to come over there's two high voltage cables that come out too looks like they go up to the drive unit they come off the front of the pack which is right here there's a high voltage connector right there on top of the back so it's a very short run what you're saying is there's no nipples on the front of the pack if you snap off this side uh they are they were there but not in the way we're not in the place that it's gonna be yeah they're not gonna hit those chili's heal right yeah you're gonna have to really do some damage to the car there's gonna be a magic pebble theory of the thing pinging around in here to get into the cooler somebody found the flaw in the death star oh no oh really the thermal exhaust port that's oil oh come on the seal the seal on the pump's leaking seriously yep look at it yeah nice fit and finish with all these nice covers over here right nice and smooth now you come over here look at this these are hanging off there's holes in here oh my goodness is this from the factory yeah it's like not even god i love this company but i'm confused i am too it's like they make a good car but it's like they don't finish stuff so this is a dual motor it's a little warm too do you like that yeah i like it once it's like a pillow yeah see so here's what i'm seeing right my initial thought not that it matters about anything but the way these battery cables are run i'm not really a huge fan again i'm not an engineer what do i know considering the plastic belly pan right here yeah remember the problem they were having with the model threes you go through a puddle of water gets ripped off yeah oh no i mean it's a plastic belly pan and the only thing protecting these battery cables is really nothing so like you could essentially if you run over something like you saw on the threes or like the s's whatever you crack that battery nozzle you're done now it's the high voltage cable now your car is like literally disabled well the nice thing is they did do this here so the belly pin is is not the fabric it's a hard it's a hard plastic okay and they did do reinforcement bracing around here i see and uh like this one doesn't have it but the other one i found out is there a channel that it runs through that's the other one there oh this is the rear that's right here see these holes right here yeah it is a little weird that's a metal insert uh first for strength yeah so it doesn't pull the threads go through there bolts go through there ah so it doesn't just rip the flap right there so it's a it's a metal reinforced i see on it as well yeah with a metal reinforcement in here and they did a cross brace so the the likelihood of it actually you know really coming off it's very very very slick yeah so they feel like they learn their lesson because the threes are definitely not reinforcing absolutely yeah we've seen a lot of that through the entire bumper we saw the three people ripped off no the the chaffing of it really because we're starting to see yeah look at this and then if you look back here it's doing it again look at this angle back here where look at this side it's rubbing on the sway bar look at that sharp aluminum that's like sharp sharp you know what's funny there's no easy access to the serial number remember how the previous ones the motor was just stamped right there it would say like refurb yeah well this motor was replaced six times yeah i like the little tick marks for a little while yeah seriously yeah that was that was interesting yeah and now they don't have that anymore now it's just you have to actually work for it to get the information that you need yeah they're trying to hide everything yeah no because basically they've seen the videos like yeah jerks that's how they get it yeah no this is this is well it's like the battery pack sticker that we we found it's just the part number that's all it is that's all it is no this looks a non-scannable part number yeah that's right yeah no no don't scare you try it you try and insist that you get rickroll what's going on what's going on there yeah well we also found some here too literally there's a possibility that your tesla could have an oil stain in your driveway yes there literally is impossible because look at this this oil yeah that oil nice and shiny wow what does it taste like vegetables oh wonderful christmas that's how green they are oh it's delicious great it's great it always looks damn good yeah so let's uh slap this together and go up top what you doing oh hey hey didn't see you there what's going on huh what's all this just kind of sending some stuff dude listen come here they went back to the original design of having a replaceable cut loop yeah replaceable loop which is in the model threes it's all one unit yeah which i thought was stupid because if you cut it you have to replace the entire wiring harness they won't let you fix it maybe these cars are so expensive they actually want to save them you know so this is the new the new air tank which is also an integral member for crosstalk structural oh yeah it almost actually yes that's the uh yeah that's the cross brace cross brace so this is bolted in it's not welded in like the original that is a slick design it's a sport air tank and then it's also having all your accessories bolted to it as well that's really slick i like that yeah the motor itself is that like a rifle model three mode it looks just like it oh wait no there's a sport motor um sports this front motor is specific to this yeah i think so to this car oh there goes that all right let's see here yeah and it's gone that's what i'm thinking it's a sport you know they have they have like these weird adapter brackets so the before it used to be all cast yeah now it's just the bracket over here yeah that's it straight to the headlight and that's it and holding the fender oh interesting the control arms they it looks like they beefed them up significantly there's no longer now it's an actual big thick cast aluminum one cabin filters are a lot easier to access and they finally moved it away from moisture areas uh who would have thought they're learning i like to see them learn and grow right too bad they won't learn and grow and change their policies on repairing the vehicles but yeah we'll get there we're hoping for the best i'll give them like 10 15 more um decades they should be there i think yeah and they have junkyards for these that they can fix right exactly it's harder to hide teslas than it is apple phones you know that's speaking of junk piles a lot larger dude i can have five iphones in my pants right now you wouldn't know is that a cell phone in your pocket you're just happy to see us awesome is that some e-waste in your box yeah you're damn right boys this is actually pretty cool so this is the new 12-volt wait a minute where's the 12-volt battery take it out yes wait a minute so this is there a dc to dc and like a small lithium battery in there or something just a lithium battery no there's a tesla can only replace their new battery for you dude so this is a uh looks like a 99 watt hour battery 12 volt battery lithium so how are you supposed to replace that yeah replace that go contact elon back and plead that to get 12 and give you the 12 volt for it and maybe he will i so if how much is a current generation 12 volt battery for a tesla i want to change i have a feeling that is more than two hundred dollars i have this feeling oh yeah i have a feeling actually i'm gonna get that part number just look at the crosstalk say hey question for you um how much is this as they laughed you out of this that would be ten thousand dollars please and we're under a we're gonna arrest you if you have to ask you can't afford it so it's like okay what happens when your 12-volt dies well how do you jump it you just come over this little guy right here yeah push that lever and then lift this little dingus off clever nice is your here's your jump post speed and more plastic yeah look at all that stuff so on the model three are there two giant fans behind here no there's only one this one has two one has two massive fans at the back i saw them underneath right also if you notice that this is a massive cooling module so there's two coolant lines here there's two cool orange here super beam model s so there's a lot of cooling there's a lot of super stuff yeah they're really redundant right now look at this font what font is that i like it yeah no seriously it really is that's awesome i didn't even notice that it's not like what the original model s was they had a chiller right you're thinking of the chiller which used refrigerant to go through like something similar to this yeah and it cooled yeah right and and these drive units they use the oil so it's a heat exchanger from oil to coolant right to to draw away the heat or warm up to cool depending on which mode you're in because there is a waste heat it uses the oil to warm the coolant yeah okay but then it uses to cool the car it uses the refrigerant correct so it will the refrigerator is used to cool the coolant which is called which is up here which is up here right so that's that's what they're using it so the super manifold to control all that right but it's interesting that there's so many heat exchangers on this thing too this gentleman did riding up over a thousand horsepower a lot of heat right man and then on top of that the craziness of this cooling system because you look down here there's the heat exchanger for the the drive unit right yeah on the drive unit yeah so there's a lot of heat being taken oh yeah and also to produce this type of horsepower what i'm thinking i don't really see that many coolant pumps there might be more underneath here but i only see one so this this has a couple of pumps built into it in the back side i believe okay kind of like the model three but for the most part they may have like like one or two pumps in the area well maybe these pumps are a lot higher capacity and flow yeah yeah they're better because the remember and then the old model s you'd see like one two three four one under there five right a whole bunch of them this is actually really something too though so those are the high voltage wires yeah this is about a bit awkward right they molded it to come up this way and then the cable's not actually long enough well it was supposed to and then they're like nah maybe it won't work they quit yeah they quit halfway yeah somebody cut it too short they're just like well this is awkward i cut a few million like this so uh good luck this motor right here is for the shutter so there's a rod that goes all the way through and it opens and closes the shutters for this air inlet down in here so there's actually louvers in there look at all the solenoids in front of this thing a lot dude there's a lot there's a lot going on here there's a lot four solenoids let's see five six solenoids the refrigerant and the refrigerant pathways and the valving and yeah probably the uh flow close loop open loop as they say very clean under there as far as the the engineering took to clean up the boot whereas the boots before were not as clean as this for the axles i like that we got tom approved it they've cleaned it up quite a bit but they've added so much to it over the old ones yeah absolutely i mean i know i'm old school but i love to look at this new technology is that great and one thing that bothers me is we've got this all this same thing they never finished it they didn't follow the router yeah what's what's more complicated this or a gas car this is like this is like a space shuttle this is it's like i have to say it's beyond my technology because i'm old-school gas engine high performance go fast what do you think of this steven i like i like this car a lot i do you know how i feel about fast teslas i like them because they're fast you know how i feel about uh the model s versus the model three right here's the thing i i don't know how i feel about this right so let me let me get this straight yep so that's the turn so there's no stock at all anymore zero stock behind here so when you push this what happens nothing this is your suppose of what would have been your horn that's the horn that's your horn your horns now touch so if i'm like right here just like driving i could just oh are you serious yeah in the la cucaracha it plays a cucaracha look at all the all the spanish people anyways everyone was like hey yeah all right yeah no so your horn is here this button what we don't even know why they have to have that that's right it's not really necessary either and that's the windshield wiper dude that's that's wait so what when you press that what happened you push that it then it asks you further you use the nub you're joking nope nope all right so what else is your twist when i'm driving on the highway and like you know i i hit a bird you've done that before you hit birds and all cut it's fine it flies away it limps away better than a deer absolutely yeah i mean it'll die later but it's like you hit it and you want to immediately turn you ha these are steps you have to follow yes so when you push this it doesn't automatically turn on you push that it will turn on but it's just the frequency of it you can have it on auto yeah or you can put the uh adjust the speed and frequency why the making it so complicated why is test is it me or did not have to be this complicated the worst part is your hand naturally wants to do this yeah and put on your direction absolutely it's on this is this is it it's on these are where my thumbs would rest i rest my thumbs right here or at least right here and you'd be recording your conversations yeah i know right yeah dude imagine if like imagine if you accidentally push that and like you're having a conversation with someone else and like your wife answers and she's quiet and she's listening to the whole car i'm all ipad now everything is like it really is i think this is i don't go ahead don't hold back i almost say it's it's a bit much it's a it's a bit much like i think like you this isn't a driver's car it's not a driver's car it's a car that you that's going to drive you you sit there hence the wheel hence this right only f1 cars have that those kind of wheels let's be real here space ships or or or space shuttles pod racers it's not really a driving car because there's so dude there's a this is that's like overwhelming yes almost passed out there's so much stuff this way you start from the side here yeah you can see there's a little quiet ghost p r n and d does those light up those light up apparently when you engage it see so now how is that intuitive now i'm in reverse now i'm in drive so a good job they did a real good job they did a plus on this it has a high-end feel yeah there's a once again there's a lot going on here a lot of look in storage com that whole thing slides yeah so reduced we may need it uh well if we leave this here we don't have to worry about it i guess so that only opens the front yep but he can put a 12 volt on the the thing is we can pop this off yeah put a 12 volt on get the doors to present what a life and then you can get a time to be no i mean if this was ever a thing for a hurry well yeah it's not really see that kind of sucks but oh well we contacted tesla and they're gonna take a look at it it only happened to a couple of other plaids that they know of i know you guys love twisting my words to fit your narrative oh he's talking bad on tesla again so i'll say it louder for people in random comments sections i won't read this isn't common put your pitchforks away there's a lot more i didn't get a chance to go in depth and talk about but this car is worth every penny of its asking price the shocks are different brakes rotors tires the interior is quieter and upgraded it has active noise cancelling the motor the cooling the battery so much has changed tesla is really stepping their game up it's a great car if you want to blend in and look like every other driveway for the upper middle class i suggest you get one but personally Awesome initial breakdown and insights but the endless in-video ads and the whole complaining about replacing the standard 12V that constantly fails with newer, longer lasting tech (like an old man yelling at the clouds) took a lot away from the video for me.

This was a fun Rich video. I'm curious to see what they do with this car- if they actually bought it or not and what went wrong with it at the end. I'm sure we'll see some more crazy content with this Plaid S in the coming weeks and months.

They were making fun of the orange cable not being seated fully in the channel https://youtu.be/OTpR6v3KQiQ?t=1239 around the heat pump, but that cable channel as well as the heatpump was designed for model Y. If you watch sandys video https://youtu.be/yzv0-CbfJlY?t=357

you will see that the orange cable goes is fully in the channel and goes up the over the heatpump to the left whereas in the model S plaid it goes horizonal to the right and pops out and heads down. They are using the same part and it doesnt really seem to matter that the cable is fully in the channel. I'm not saying Tesla doesnt make mistakes but this seems intentional.
