oh what's going on guys welcome back to the shop i hope you didn't miss me too much but we got a pretty cool project lined up for you this week let's check it out some of you guys may recognize the look of this do so many veterans to the channel will remember the origins of a project looking something like this called project ugly stick and well that's because this is a cut off of the same branch i have been able to identify this as birch uh since um but yeah this piece is pretty freaking awesome we got all kinds of insect infiltration got a little bit of spalting don't even know how you end up with this kind of figuring but i think we are going to be able to make something cool out of this what do you think all right guys so we got our piece laid out here um we're gonna be using our trusty vase mold pitcher so um first things first i gotta round this guy out a little just a little bit it doesn't don't don't go in yet so i'm just gonna do a little trim ski on the outside here so she fits inside the mold so i'm just going to get this up between centers but as you can see here got a little problem with doing that i just want to use the spur and my live center because you know we don't know which side is going to be up which side is going to be down so um i got the uh the trusty wood welder here all warmed up and ready to go i got a little piece of oak caught we're just gonna glue on over this here punky hole and uh that'll give us somewhere to stick our live center like so i'm gonna let that cool down and we'll get it up between centers and keep on moving forward [Music] all right just gonna peck away at this guy ever so gently until we can get her to fit in the mold it's pretty neat looking hope we don't screw it up contact [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] my lecture is gonna work looking good to me all right just gotta get that uh that little plate off the bottom glued on and i will mix up some resin and we will meet back up then [Music] like a glove [Music] here [Music] that's a greasy doggy dog dog butt breath dog dog butt breath that's not nice her breath smells like tiny holes we still love her [Music] sure but you have to make the noises i got noises galore [Music] it's my first time put some over here [Music] [Music] so [Music] all right guys well today is tomorrow let's get inside this pressure pot and see what we're working with huh uh there it is [Music] all right guys well i've been staring at this thing for about an hour and a half or so and i've come to the conclusion that well when god hands you a turd sandwich it's not actually a turd sandwich it's an opportunity to move past an obstacle and step outside of your comfort zone and grow a little bit so i had to think well around this one i had a pretty good idea of which direction we were going and i'm gonna try my best to keep this or i might hate it and i might just cut this off in the end but [Laughter] um yeah i'm just gonna get started here by getting this rounded out down to the wood as usual get a better idea of how these flows are moving through and just try and make the best of this thing um i think we can still make something really beautiful out of this so yeah let's do that all right let's see if we can turn this turd sandwich into a filet mignon contact so [Music] wow [Music] so [Music] so all right guys so i took a walk away from this thing for about a day or two and upon my return i think it's pretty evident to me that this needs to be a lid so uh yeah first things first i'm going to turn this shoulder in just a little bit get this uh squared out part it off engage [Music] [Music] all right we're going to get this guy cast into some resin get these voids filled get this guy hold up got her measured up here now with our uh slide square just a little roughly spinning around i got a little mark here on the tail stock that'll just give me a little indication of where to stop let's get our board out [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] so so [Music] all right guys taking a look at what we're working with now um i'm hollowed just underneath a half inch wall or a little closer to 3 8 so i think uh with finished scraping and sanding we're going to be right where i want to be so now we have this here lid to deal with we have a lot of these bug holes i don't know if you can see yeah she right on through that one some of these cracks on this little gap here so we gotta cast this guy all right guys so i got our resin mixed up here i'm just mixing in the color um i ended up going with the black diamond bora bora blue we are gonna cast our lid make sure all the voids are full and i'm gonna take it one step further and i got a little funky idea here for our finial so we're gonna be using some of this resin for that as well so i'm going to be using uh actually a pen blank mold uh for our finial casting i'm going to be using this here piece of aussie burl and we're going to integrate into our knob there all right let's start working on this lid and keep on moving forward towards the end of this here project [Applause] [Music] [Music] all right i think it's about as far as we need to go for now yeah so i'm gonna get our vessel here re-mounted um we're gonna figure out our opening size get our lid fitted and then we can finish on the shaping on this finish up shaping on here start working towards our finish [Music] all right i think we're gonna call that good on fit [Applause] oh no one second [Music] do you want to tell him where should i i'll tell him oh man what do you thought oh man what do you got that's a royal meal for the princess well let's see what's in there yeah let's see hi really enjoy your videos and your family are awesome keep up the good work here are my stickers look forward to seeing them on your board keep making and creating all right we're gonna have to get these up on the board at the end of the project let's see one more letter for a very popular girl okay yeah i know they all look very tasty deceptive okay oh that's a beautiful sticker don't eat it no no no we need that for the board gorgeous look at that that is a nice sucker and this one has a letter we're gonna sit down and read that see thanks to your friends she's just staring at the sticker say thanks say bye-bye we're gonna go read your letter from your friend we just got a letter we just got a letter all right guys so i'm pretty happy with the shape that we got here i'm just gonna go now through all the grits i think we're gonna go 150 out to 600. let's do it [Music] [Music] [Music] all right guys so we are sanded out to 600 gonna go forward with our vita fusion thinned clear lacquer as a sanding sealer [Music] uh a lot of you guys that have been around with the channel for a while know that i like to play around with different kinds of finishes and just seeing the kinds of results that we can get um i've been doing a lot of work with the axe would pay stuff and i get great results with that some high quality stuff always does the trick um but a couple of months ago a buddy of mine sent me something that he was making on his own uh that's my buddy brad over at brad's workbench and he sent me over a couple samples of a sanding paste that he cooked up and this is what really caught my interest is this uh here tongue wax finish this is something that he put together himself um i haven't really ever seen anything like it and i just been staring at this stuff for a while so i figure why not give it a try he's been helping uh me and shannon out over here with uh you know all of our noob questions and stuff and he's just been an all-around good friend so i'm going to give this stuff a shot why not so i'm just gonna go ahead and get a good coat of this stuff on here keep on working this piece down to her finish date [Music] just keeping it wet all right well that's step one and uh yeah as you guys saw i was using the uh the howards just to keep it wet i really like uh the way that works with the abrasive paste and breaking it down now keep in mind that's not food safe but this is not a food vessel so uh i'm really liking the results so far all right let's move on to the next step and that is gonna be this here tongue wax finish we're gonna apply this let it set i'm gonna give it a good i don't know 10 to 20 minutes and then we're just gonna polish it out see what we got all right guys i'm gonna call that good uh little check back with you in about 20 minutes and we will polish this out see what we're working with i am thrilled so far yeah i'm really liking the way this is looking yeah all right cool all right we're gonna have to pump up the jam on this one we're gonna have to hit at least 180 degrees to get this wax to melt friction polish this in yeah it's getting a little hot on the thingies [Music] so looking pretty good all right i think i'm gonna leave that there for now i'm liking the finish i i don't know i might put one more coat on that at the end but uh i think i'm just going to push ahead here and get to work on our lid i am going to be taping off the front of this just so we're not messing with the finish that we have but um also i'm just going to be using a little o-ring here i'm going to wrap this around our lid and that's going to give us a little bit of standoff from the piece we have a little more room to work without actually coming in contact so i'm gonna get that set up and we will just keep pushing on [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] all right well what did you learn probably not the best idea to cast our wood in the center of this little mold [Music] didn't think that one all the way through so uh a little sketchy gonna make sure she is gluten tight [Music] click and oh fingers crossed on this one i'm a little sketched [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] geez [Music] hmm she was about to go chucking across the room here but i think i grabbed her just in time get this uh sand it down i think we're good to go all right final step here we just gotta polish out this lid and we are finally finally through this process all the way up [Music] [Applause] [Music] she's a beard clark [Music] all right we're gonna get this all cleaned up and take a look see what we got hey it's done let's check it out all right guys here she is i think i'm gonna have to go on record uh calling this my favorite thus far um what i see in this piece is an earth-like planet from orbit we got so much character in this thing we got oceans we got some rivers got some glacial terror out some mountain ranges some peninsulas we even got a land bridge down in the bottom here um yeah i'm really really liking this piece uh i think the finish came out very nice um i like the uh i like the uh the don wax i think it worked out well i will leave a link in the description if you want to check that out over at uh brad's etsy store i will leave some slow rollers at the end um so moving on from that as you guys saw earlier in the video we got a couple new stickers in we got tornadoes dubois jimmy's den up on board be sure to go check them out show them some love ah all right where we go i hope you guys didn't miss me uh too much i know i took a little hiatus there and uh this project ran a little long so this one's gonna be a bit late but um i'll do my best to keep up with the work here keep you guys entertained um i really hope you guys like this video uh for those of you guys that showed up for our live stream thank you very much that was a lot of fun and we plan on doing some more uh in the future so that was kind of uh hitting our six month mark and we just wanted to kind of do something new and expand our a little bit of experience here on youtube um channel's doing great i love your guys support we're sitting somewhere around 6 500 subscribers and now i'm going to tick up the goal to uh ten thousand let's see if we can't hit 10 000 by the end of our one year mark and in order to do that i need you guys help so if you could if you would share this video with your friends with the world pick an old one that you like send it around um like i said earlier i will leave a link in the description if you guys want to try out this here uh finished by brad's workbench he has also uh got a woodturning channel up if you want to go check him
