oh what's going on guys welcome back to the shop for this week's episode we return to the wood pile of oddities bringing you guys this fine piece of skeletal remains uh this is a piece of driftwood that i found uh while on a hike i've been hanging on to it for i don't know a couple years now i think we originally called it the dragon skull something like that but uh yeah we're gonna cast some resin and see if we can't make something cool out of this let's do it let's get to work [Music] [Music] do all right guys so i got uh our piece glued down to the bottom of the mold here um i think i've got some colors picked we're gonna be going with a dark charcoal probably add a little of this uh black diamond starry night and we're going to do the resin tint bronze so i got a couple of pieces of waste block in there just to help save a little bit of resin um but yeah we're still gonna be wasting a bunch but is what it is comes with the territory so i'm just gonna get some of these colors mixed up a while and hopefully we like them because i never used the bronze or the black before all right here we go don't shoot till you see the white to the rise oh you're gonna need a ton yeah well you gotta start somewhere you [Music] know [Music] all right guys today is the next it's the moment of truth let's get inside our mold and see what our castings look like [Music] [Music] pretty neat looking in there [Music] kind of flex the mold out on us it's [Music] weird [Music] all right there she is it looks pretty cool i'm liking it i was a little worried about this i didn't know how far down that void was going to be but no it looks good awesome all right guys we are up on the lathe face plate and live center just give you one last look here before we start peeling away at this onion really cool looking flows um you know as usual no idea how this is gonna come out um obviously we didn't use a whole lot of wood but i think what we do have is gonna have some really neat character and i'm hoping it pairs with these colors pretty well but we shall see so i'm gonna be using the uh easy wood tools negative rake carbide on this to prevent chip out and we're just gonna get this rounded out until we get down to the wood and from there just kind of figure it out as we go try and expose as much as that of that wood grain as possible let's do it [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] this is kind of what i'm following here see how the rest of it starts displaying itself as we go that's why i started doing this radius just kind of following these pieces as they run up the side [Music] [Music] all right so here's where we're at so far i'm just going to get some denatured alcohol in here i'll see through the resin i think there's some more wood in here that i want to bring out some in here a little bit in there here all right that's yeah all right that's where we started so uh yeah i think i'm going to maintain this shape uh mainly because it's going to allow us to present as much of the wood through the resin as possible i'm just gonna keep working it down keep bringing it out until we get these spots out and just roll this around nice i think it'll make for a cool look really amazing flows in here really happy with that [Music] [Music] so [Music] i do believe i'm gonna draw this top edge in a little bit and bring our maximum outer diameter down just a little bit just to kind of offset the center just kind of taking it as i go um that's going to help us get down to this piece of wood also i just don't want anything hidden behind the resin i don't like that look i expose it as much as i can to the ends of the wood itself [Music] [Music] all right i think that's probably pretty close to what our final shape is changed it up a little bit there just kind of flowing through it um i think now we're going to get the bottom set up get a mortise cut in there [Music] go from there take a little from this here but that might come out standing just on [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] um [Music] all right guys so we're scraped down i'm just gonna work through the grits now [Music] probably i don't know 150 now should be good [Music] so [Music] all right guys well here we are sanded to 600. i'm gonna go ahead get some sanding sealer on here and uh we'll go from there and get two coats on if i have enough it's getting a little low and uh yeah i need to go upstairs and get some paper towels cause i'm out daddy what's up you got mail go ahead give this to daddy what did we get see look at the neat stamps daddy look at your neat stamps whoa where'd that come from look what do you got hey daddy you got mail what is it where is it from that's royal mail oil mail for a princess let's open it up here ready let's open it back up like we did outside what did we find stickers don't eat them [Music] so daddy awesome we're gonna have to get them on the board then yay say thank you to our friends who sent us stickers in the mail we love going to the mailbox thank you so much okay you can eat a little bit we don't need that yeah just yeah that's good how cool is that it's awesome all right so we got our two coats of sanding sealer on here i'm pretty confident i'll be able to get working on our polish on the inside here so i'm gonna get this flipped around and we're gonna start actually we're going to finish shaping i'm going to drop this top down probably about a half an inch and blend this small radius into the piece um yeah i basically just want to leave partial uh wood in the rim i think that'll give us a cool effect and uh yeah just kind of blend this shape into something that looks a little more natural but uh yeah so i'm gonna get this flipped around and we're gonna do some of that shaping and get into hollowing all right so i'm just gonna get started off here getting this uh faced off i might start working this rim down a little bit and then i'm gonna move on to uh forstner and we'll start a bore [Music] contour voices [Music] [Music] [Music] all right i'm gonna call that good we'll be able to haul the rest all right let's do some halloween [Music] all right all right guys i don't know if you're gonna be able to see this but uh right here that is a rock so i just wiped out two edges of my carbides that's the negative rake that's fun um i changed the carbide around thinking might just be wiped out from normal use but uh now i went back in and then wiped another corner out so i have to get that rock out right this ought to be interesting hopefully this isn't too big and hopefully this is the only one uh well i got two more tries okay oh there's some pieces of it some quartz that's all it was oh man that's gonna boost me off see oh daddy it's okay can i have that booger hey you she's collecting boogers all right well there you have it there's the rock hopefully that's the only little pebble in there i only got two more corners all right what are we trying to do again not hunting for rocks you know when i'm on a hike and stuff i like finding cool rocks i'm turning the ball i don't like finding rocks contact that's better so [Music] [Music] all right i'm thinking that's pretty good on the uh the rim here when we go into sanding we'll round this out i'm gonna figure how much of the wall thickness i want to leave i want to leave a good bit of depth in this resin i don't want to cut it so thin that we don't have all this amazing dimension so i'm thinking pretty close to where i want to be all right guys super hollowed out i don't know three eighths half inch wall i'm feeling pretty good about that gonna move forward and uh get this all sanded up i think i i'm gonna switch gears a little bit here it's been a while since i've done a resin finish and i think this particular piece deserves it so yeah i'm probably gonna rough this back down to uh 320 and we'll take this out to 320 and we'll get uh set up for uh resin coat [Music] [Music] all right got this all sanded out 320 inside and outs gonna get it cleaned up a little alcohol get ready for our resin finish [Music] all right guys so we got our piece all prepped up here i got two ounces of art resin got the rotisserie running just gonna get a nice base coat on here and see what we've got in the morning [Music] do hey guys hey no over here it's done you want to check it out yeah let's go take a look all right guys well here it is uh this is our driftwood resin resin appears to me to be a red oak root ball strong enough to survive the years um what can i say about this thing i am pleasantly surprised i love love the color combination um i loving how this weathered hard oak wood is presenting itself after i don't even know how many years was it rotten away must have been quite a few um as always i will leave some slow rollers at the end you guys can check this out in further detail beyond that we've got a new sticker here on the board agk
