well good morning it is the 19th of May 2020 we are in Levittown Pennsylvania and we have to repair a gate that is constantly falling over somebody built it on top of bolted it to the top of AP Henry blocks and it was not a very good idea because the blocks EP Henry blocks are not cemented down so what ends up happening is when the wind blows it just flips the blocks back and the fence falls backward and the only thing keeping it from hitting the ground is it falls against a telephone pole a utility pole the other problem with this fence is the fact that when they installed it and they put the rails into the posts normally you secure them together with a simple little screw and none of the screws were installed so as the wind blew and this is a very high wind area it would pull the rails out of the post and then all the slats would go flying and it would make a complete mess of the neighborhood well we are just pulling in to the job site now I'm gonna go in and introduce myself and you are gonna watch my intro [Music] this is the major problem here these EP Henry's are not cemented down they just sit there so because this is bolted to the top of them when the wind blows this thing acts like a sail it leans right against that telephone pole and these bricks well these blocks are up on an angle like this so in order to fix that I came up with a an idea so I think well the first thing I'm going to do is tie this fence off so the wind can't take it and I'll tie it right off for this tension all right that should keep it from blowing over and tipping this block up and this one that the sand is on then we have one more little one down here I'm not going to worry about that with the window because the ropes got it pretty much secured [Music] [Music] [Music] yeah I do another one here for this one and then one more so right there I'll do that off camera because it's the same thing and then we'll move on with the project okay this rebar that I installed here is already very strong and the concrete is not even dry yet it'll dry underground now all three of them are installed I just got to fill in the last hole this other side might need a pin as well to hold it down if it flips the other direction she said that it only flipped toward the telephone pole so the rods I installed this rod right here all three of them they will keep it from flipping toward a telephone pole but they could still flip inward like this if the wind changes direction when she said that wasn't an issue and she just needed to stop it from blowing toward her neighbor's house cuz that's the way the window is blows so I guess anything subject to change alright so this part of the fence here the problem is the top pulls out in the wind you can see the scuff floors here now when this pulls out and it gets sloppy and the wind keeps blowing it ends up pulling the bottom out so we're gonna fix that and I'll show you how all right so the rail the slats fit down into here but they only go up flush against the post so anything in this rail that's behind the post will not be in the way of it so I'm gonna drill a hole in the rail that goes into the post and we're gonna sing Castro would do it me [Music] then we're gonna do the same from this side hole right here put a screw in and that should prevent it because the heads will hit inside of here wow man this yard gets wind on non windy days you can tell by the trees in the background the wind is blowing but it's not bending trees over but it's blowing through this yard and it's ripping the fence apart while I'm working on it this is why this has to be fixed cuz these slats end up all over the neighborhood like a bunch of surfboards gone wild so the way you put one of these fences together in case you're curious is you put the posts in and then after the posts are in and you put the bottom rail in and you secure it at the bottom then you put the slots all across and the last one usually has to be ripped down to make it fit and then there's a little plastic cap that goes over the edge of it for a finished look and then you put put the top rail into the one post and all the slats fit into it and you lock it into the next post and then you secure those in well they did all that when they put this in whoever did this but they didn't secure the bottom rail or the top rail into the post and I'm going to show you how to do that in just in a few minutes here it's important that all of these slats are completely plumb that's level up and down and I'm using my foot to slide them over on the bottom to accomplish that you're probably looking at this picture going now why all those slats missing I thought he was just putting them in well I was the problem is none of these top rails or the bottom rails for that matter or secure it into the post not one of them so I had it almost all put together the wind blew the top rail of the one that's missing the slats pulled out of that corner post all the slats went blowing into the outside of the yard there and I had to pick them all up and start putting it all back together again I didn't have the camera going it would have been a great video for you but I turned it off try to capture things that I think is going to help you and sometimes I miss some of the good action shots however I'm going to connect these two ratchet straps together so that I can put a slight pressure on these two posts and that should allow me to bring the top rail that's on the left there into the corner post I'll secure it with a screw and then I'll take the top rail on the right there that has the slats missing and I'll secure that into the corner post and then I can go back to doing exactly what I was doing before putting those slats back in so I can secure the top rail on the right hand side of that opening if you've had one of these fences installed do you purchase a home and there's one already there take the caps off the top of your posts hopefully they're not glued on if they are maybe it's not such a good idea because if they use the PVC adhesive you'll end up having to bust your caps off but if they come off look down in there and see if they're secured in place if they're not what you're gonna learn in this video we'll save your fence so keep watching I'll show you what I do down through the top of the post to make sure that these rails do not come out ever again just as soon as I get this together we'll get right into it so let me climb up here I'm going to show you inside the post the post is hollow and you can see the two rails coming into it so what we're gonna do to keep them from sliding out is we're gonna take a screw and we're going to put it through the top of the rail as close to the post wall as possible then don't drive it all the way down in there leave it sticking out about a half an inch just like that and now that rail can no longer slide out of the post and this fence can take incredible amounts of wind thank everybody for tuning in and watching this video this is what the final product looks like as far as the EP Henry wall goes this wall is a stacked wall it is not mortared together whoever installed the fence bolted it down to a loose block so like I said in the beginning everything kept blowing over this is my solution to it it's thinking outside the box I make these videos because I think that they will help the DIY as well as the contractor sometimes you have to come up with alternative solutions to a problem and this is what I came up with it doesn't look too bad it actually looks pretty decorative the fact that the rebar has the grooves and lines in it makes it look like it's fancy I painted it all black heated it up bent it painted it all black and it actually looks like it belongs so this is a simple solution to a complicated problem and I'm gonna show you here in a second how it withstands the wind coming right up right now take a close-up look at how the wind tips this block but it doesn't move anymore the rebar is holding it in place this is my plan from the beginning this is the solution they came up with it does work if you have a similar problem to this this is probably a good way to solve it please like subscribe and share comment if you want I'll see you next time [Music] you
