you know what i have never sold a backhoe by itself you know what dawned on me i came to that realization i just am inundated with requests for used attachments and i just don't have that many of them maybe on occasion if i get something in with a used tractor i'll have it however i use backhoe with something i have never had not once in inventory by itself now a lot of you guys are in the market for a backhoe you think you want one so make sure you stick around and find the reasons why i've never sold one hey and stick around until later in the video five tips coming for backhoe owners for john deere certainly but most other tractor brands as well good works tractors is proud to be sponsored by borah wheel spacers i recently installed some two inch wheel spacers from borah they make them in one to six inches but they really help out with lateral side to side stability these tractors are long they're narrow so get yourself some borrow wheel spacers there's gonna be a link down below hey so i'd encourage you if you like this video i'd love to get a thumbs up from you hit that subscribe button right underneath the video and read through the description as well all sorts of helpful links down there for tractor owners or head on over to gilbertstractors.com [Music] so like i was saying i am asked all the time about backhoes do you have a used backhoe for sale hey if i buy this backhoe do you have a kit that modifies it to fit this machine how much to add a backhoe to an existing tractor that i have for sale now finding used backhoe is almost like finding a needle in a haystack they are very few and far between especially something that's fairly local to you where you can pick it up shipping a backhoe isn't practical right you see this big bulky attachment and you can just imagine how difficult and expensive that would be to ship so you want to find something that's used and local and even a small backhoe like this is just not on the market so the main reason as it often does comes down to price and i'm often asked if i have a tractor in stock if i'll take the backhoe off if a customer doesn't want it or maybe add a backhoe on the reason i don't want to take a backhoe off is because it's very labor intensive and labor is money so for a traditional frame mounted backhoe like this 1025r it could be a kubota it doesn't matter what brand if we're not talking a three-point mount there's going to be a subframe that goes underneath there's going to be power beyond hydraulics that are tapped into the trans axle and feeding off the back it's not just this big hunk of steel that you see on the back side of the machine and you need somebody that's skilled and the time to do it in order to take off that subframe to undo the hydraulic connections that are on here beyond just the subframe and the hydraulics a lot of the smaller backhoes like the first generation 1025r the kubota bx series and quite a few others that are on the market share one seat for the main driver seat that spins around and faces backwards for the backhoe now that probably doesn't seem like a big cost but one time inadvertently i purchased a 1025r with a backhoe on it and when i got it at my shop i realized the seat did not swivel around from forward to reverse to be able to use the backhoe i thought no big deal i'll just get that kit from john deere that was an eighteen hundred dollar part just for the swivel kit not for the seat not for any frame not for installation nothing else eighteen hundred dollars just for a swivel kit so also backhoes are very specific to the model or series of tractor and so if i go taking a backhoe off i'm going to have to sell it only to that customer base whereas you know a set of pallet forks or like grapples something going on the front end of a tractor or even a three-point hitch is quite a bit more universal let me give you an example if you have a kubota bx 2380 or a bx 2680 and you want to add the oem backhoe to it you're not going to be able to you need to get the kubota bx23s which is the entire tractor the tractor the loader and the backhoe and maybe a belly mower if you want that too but that's one of the unfortunate things about some of these models oh and the kubota's as well just so you know on their backhoe model this rops bar this opening is actually going to be pushed out a little bit wider so that you have a more comfortable experience on the operator station so touching a little bit more on labor costs not only do you have the cost involved to take all those components off of the old tractor but then you have to reverse that or double it to put all that stuff back on another tractor and that's just a lot of money you know that's involved for not a lot of added value so i get it you know if you want to have a backhoe on your used tractor that you're purchasing it's an attachment a lot of folks really want to have and i've added brand new backhoes for a few folks i really discourage that unless you are just dead set on having it the reason i discourage it is because you're already going in the used market to try to save money so you're kind of counteracting that by getting a brand new backhoe one of the most expensive attachments you can buy for it and then adding it onto your used piece of equipment so i think because of the fact it's going on a used piece of equipment you're probably going to see even more depreciation than you normally would so really what it comes down to is answering customers questions something i'm asked all the time i want to share my feedback the reasoning behind it help you make a better decision if you are in the market tractor shopping find a used setup with a backhoe already on it and to a lesser extent the same thing can be said with a front end loader or even with a belly mower it is very challenging to find a front end loader in the used market especially with the right bracketry to fit your machine and the same thing can be said for a belly mower because a lot of these john deere models in particular they almost overlap and you would think that they will fit and be compatible with all sorts of different series like a 60 inch deck but they're not there's like 15 different 60-inch models out there and i can tell you if you are missing one part just on a mower bracket or maybe the mounts for the loader or something for the subframe for a backhoe you're in for a rude awakening and how much that's going to cost and that's going to negate the entire point of buying a used piece of equipment and for those of you considering a backhoe alternative check out the stump bucket we sell these we ship them did a comparison recently comparing a front hoe to a backhoe the strengths the weaknesses pros and cons whatever check it out or go to goodworks tractors if you want to get more information on this hey tip number one for you backhoe owners i don't pretend to be an expert myself but what i found helpful is throttling down on your engine throttle it gives you a lot better fine tune control over the the backhoe joysticks here to really master where you want precisely that backhoe to go you have the scoop operation you have the boom the extension the angling it's a lot going on so at least until you can master it but for me i'm comfortable with it at a very low almost an idle position throughout the use of it you typically still have plenty of force you're going to see up here a pretty cool custom handle along with a couple of brackets that extend down with holes in them these are for lights if you want to add that on for low light conditions when you're working but grab handle here so it can help you climb up onto the platform of your backhoe so that's going to be available from mudscustoms.com along with backhoe buckets in various sizes from little trenching buckets to wide scoop buckets and everything in between so if you're looking for a custom bucket not just for your john deere but for kubota and other brands as well they even have a quick connect system coming out for easy and quick interchangeability mudscustoms.com say five percent off your order with code gwt next up let's talk about these exposed rods right here you have them located in various spots on your backhoe we all know a backhoe tends to sit for a long extended period of time and oftentimes unfortunately it's going to be out in the elements so back in the winter time you know after hearing about that from a few folks we did a little trial so we tried a couple of different products one on each cylinder to see what we thought worked best that went from maybe early january late december i can't remember chris but all the way until last week at some point so that was i don't know four months ish give or take and then we peeled it all off and i will say that denzo tape which is like a a waxy thick fibrous tape that just kind of wraps around and almost self seals as you wrap it on was way easier to take back off and just very little cleanup versus the the fluid film type of product that we put on here which had almost hardened or solidified on the cylinder and required a lot of extra effort and heavy degreaser to get the film off of here i'd really recommend that denzel tape for the long-term storage it was more expensive no doubt but i think the protection overall and the cleanup afterwards made it worth the while the reason we did that is to prevent potential pitting and corrosion on your exposed rods and that worked really well for us and maybe it's not going to happen to you for short periods of time if it's got to sit for a long amount of time could even be your front end loader or anything else with those exposed rods the way it has to sit check out denso tape link down below you're going to have three different locking mechanisms on the john deere 260b backhoe so depending on what manufacturer of backhoe you have you're likely going to have something similar it could vary a little bit from this one now not all backhoes are going to have locking mechanisms for the stabilizer arms but most of them will have a stabilizer or a lock i should say for the the booms to prevent drift down and then another one to lock it from moving left or right so the reason this is important is because backhoe hydraulics and loader hydraulics in general are going to drift down over time and it is definitely not unheard of for somebody to pull their backhoe into the garage leave it for a few days maybe a week and come back out and find that backhoe against the back of their garage maybe a car a workbench whatever is parked behind the backhoe if you forget to put this in it's going to drift down and just end up leaning on or maybe busting or damaging whatever is behind it the same thing can be said for these stabilizer arms so you want to be aware of that have a little checklist in your head of what to do every time you get off of the backhoe and put it into storage now the last one i want to point out is something pretty simple but it's actually the instructions for installation and removal that are plastered right onto the backhoe you know i used to see a lot of front end loaders that had the instructions for installation and removal on there as well kind of disappointing to not see that but it's a very handy straightforward reference this is a very intimidating looking process however once you do it a time or two it is very easy you can do this in about five minutes just taking the backhoe on or off it's not that challenging for me the most annoying part is you have to remove the three-point arms and then put them back on when you don't want to have the backhoe in use so that's still pretty easy to do it's just kind of a cumbersome process it's just pins that you're putting onto the three-point arms but it's a very simple process overall don't be intimidated by it if you are looking to get a backhoe and thinking i can't do it instructions are right here i followed them to a tee they're really straightforward anyway folks that's a wrap for today if you like what you see here i'd love to get a thumbs up from you
