hey guys I'm Sam crack behind me is the super cheap supercharged Jaguar s-type bar and I've decided that we're gonna make this car 500 horsepower under $5,000 now today I've got the car prepped and I'm gonna take it in for a cheap paint job now cheap paint jobs are usually associated with bad paint jobs but since I did some of the prep work myself I'm fairly confident that even though this job will cost me a fraction of what most body shops would charge it's gonna turn out really good now when it comes to cheap paint jobs the first place that comes to mind is Mako Mako has kind of an interesting reputation especially here on YouTube there's people that love their new Mako paint jobs and then some others are pretty critical of them especially one of my more supportive friends Rob Freddie who took in this bmw m3 to get painted at Mako he got a complete color change and in his words one of the better services that they offer they have the almost $2,000 package which I got which was $1,800 and they sort of do everything and I wanted them to do the door jams and the trunk jams and all that other stuff that normally wouldn't be done with the cheapo package so at least this is all white had I known it wasn't gonna be done like super well I probably would have just said don't even bother just spray the outside and from what I understand it is one of the better services a couple thousand dollars pretty much takes care of nearly everything except for major body damage the interior was now sprayed white and how you spray the leather interior of a car when you're supposed to be spraying the exterior I don't know I mean that is class that's lower than my lowest expectations I mean I didn't even have it in my mind that the interior the car was in jeopardy of getting painted I'm gonna call Rob situation an isolated incident you see Mako is a franchise think about it like going to your favorite pizza restaurants say that the one down the street from you just maybe doesn't have the best service and when the food comes out it's never been good but there's another one that's just a bit farther away from you and every time you've been to that one or had it at a friend's house you really enjoy it there's a degree of variability here because it is a franchise I personally think haters have given Mako a bad name just because they don't really understand what you're getting when you sign up for the cheapest paint job what we have here are two cars both with metallic black paint finishes both with base coat clear coat paint finishes pretty much every single modern car leaves a factory with a base coat clear coat finish now I want to get closer here on the Fiesta because this car has been repainted in the front if we look here this bumper and this fender have both been repainted you can see the nice metallic finish and then we go into the door this door was is what is called blended that just means if they shot a clear coat over the door but if we go here this door wasn't even touched and the rest of the car pretty much hasn't been touched except for the other fender so you could see how uniform that looks even though this door has clear coat that was painted over it and this fender was completely painted from new same thing with the front bumper here it's all extremely uniform because I opted to get the replacement panels done in a base coat clear coat finish now if we go over here to the Jeep which has had no paintwork on it whatsoever but you see that it's been kept pretty decent it still has that nice finish there's no sun damage on the clear coat we look at the front bumper though which has a lot of Nicks and scratches on it I tried to touch this up a long time ago on this car when I didn't understand how paint worked I basically took a spray paint can of color match pain I taped this area off you can see my hard tape line and I sprayed this and you can see that it made it look pretty much worse almost highlighted the area and that's because well I didn't prep this surface now prepping this surface would entail filling in these scratches first then sanding everything smooth and really when you prep a service you have to do the whole bumper because it's tough to blend it in can you do it yeah but you'll always be able to see a line the concept here is very simple make your body smooth and get rid of any imperfections if you remember when we first bought this car it had a handful of dings and dents small scratches in the clear coat was peeling on the sides also the hood roof and trunklid had been repainted and you could tell that obviously it looked newer than the other paint it wasn't very uniform and on top of it all of the blemishes were painted over so you could see them when you look close at first I took the dual action sander and sanded down all my panels when I realized how thick the paint really was on the top parts I went ahead with an 80 grit sandpaper and sanded down the hood the roof and the trunk as best as I could to really get that old paint off there and make it nice and smooth since most of my dents weren't very deep I went ahead and just filled right over them with some good body fill now even though I sanded this down for a while and the surface itself is very smooth there's a few little pinholes and those can be covered up by again filling them with a tiny bit of body fill and then sanding it down to make it smooth in this video I found here on YouTube a guy went into a Mako and got the most basic paint job but he didn't do any of the prep work so during his walk around and even though he expresses that he's pretty happy with the job you can see all the dents that were originally in the car and also all the paint peeling that was happening they just pretty much sprayed right over it so even though you got a fresh coat of paint the flaws are still highly visible in my opinion I think it's worth taking a little bit of extra time to do it the right way now this is really the first time I've ever prepped a car for pain I've seen it done dozens of times and the general idea is simple like I already said we just want all of our surfaces smooth since it was my first time I do think it took me longer but if I ever did this again I think I could knock it out in an entire day and for those of you maybe considering a new or cheap paint job definitely consider doing the prep work yourself especially if you didn't have any excess paint on the car to begin with what should be most situations the jobs actually gonna be easier for you now by opting to do all my own bodywork and prep work I saved likely around $1,000 the price of this paint job would have tripled and that's most body shops if you went to a good body shop besides the paint job itself being a base coat clear coat of course a more expensive nicer paint that we chose here now all that body work would have been a lot of extra money and you'd be talking about three four thousand dollars here with about $50 worth of materials and again a 480 dollar bill at the shop were substantially less than most other competitors now before you type in the criticism down below keep in mind this is a cheap car that's why we're opting for a cheap job on my newer nicer cars I've always had at least two stage paint jobs put back on the cars after the Body Works been performed and I'm typically not doing my own body work on the higher-end cars all this talk about Mako you likely think I end up taking a Jag to Mako and no I didn't there's a couple reasons why but I do have two Mako estimates right here in my hand and I'm gonna go over them with you and then tell you why I decided against Mako so the first store I went into they've got kind of all their different options up on a menu and the cheapest option is around four or five hundred dollars but they're always running a special if you go online and mention it it's $2.99 for your base paint job now again this is a cheap car I don't see a point in spending a whole lot more on a car than it's worth and in this case their cheap paint job again being four or five hundred dollars if you go to their next best paint job it doubles in price it's like a thousand dollars and then again what Rob Freddy said you can go for the really high-end one that's like two thousand dollars every time I've gone into a Mako they've always up sold their second best paint job and the difference between their base paint job and their second best paint job is one thing at least from what I was told and that's the difference between an enamel paint and a urethane paint now if you go to the paint store and get the same just take any generic color out there white an enamel or you get it in urethane both single-stage paints the price difference is negligible for one car the price difference might be anywhere from like twenty to fifty dollars so to pay double the price on what they're saying is a better more longer-lasting paint which I personally believe is arguable as well it's not worth it in my opinion the total on the estimate at the first Mako because again I tried telling the individual several times I just really want the cheap paint job on this car was I eight hundred and two dollars and that's just more than I'm willing to spend again we got a budget on this thing we're gonna stick to it and we're gonna make it look good either way so the second shop I went to they're much more understanding they understood it was a cheap car I understood it wasn't in the best of condition and they said no problem we'll give you the cheap paint job we just have to sell you a sealer that goes underneath especially since you want to change the color of the car it will make things look a little bit better and I totally agree with that a sealer is important and I said definitely sell me the sealer that's no problem their quote came out to four hundred and thirty three dollars and that is what I was going to go with until I found this other shop now one other thing to note about Mako besides them not including really any prep work at all in these two paint jobs since I would be doing the prep work myself they void your warranty so if your paint does start to have problems six months or a year down the road you're out of luck because you prepped it yourself now the place I chose has a very fitting name it's called econo no this is not a sponsored video and the reason I chose them is very simple number one as far as I understand they're using the same paint as Mako it's called axalta that's the brand number two I feel like they just give you a little bit more for your money and their base paint jobs I includes a little bit of sanding down of the panels and that's important to me because even though I'm doing the prep work maybe I miss a corner here and edge there there guys are doing this all day long they're probably gonna go back and hit those corners of those edges and it's important that your entire surface is scuffed really nice so that the paint adheres to it properly number two they don't void your warranty just because you did the prep work and I think that that's a great option number three if you buy they're nice or paint job the gentleman working there told me that it is a nicer gray to paint and it includes an embedded clear coat and that will help with the longevity and also the gloss and the gloss is obviously something important to the looks of the car and so for only about fifty dollars more than this quote right here this quote was four hundred thirty three dollars the total out the door at econo was right around four hundred eighty dollars I think to have the clear coat in to have a little bit more prep work done by them and also the warranty is well worth it now a lot of you guys wrote me and said that I should get this jack painted British racing green I think that's an amazing color especially on vintage Jack but if you take a look at it on the s-type just almost dates it more than it already is I want to hear from you guys what color do you think I should paint the Jaguar let me know in the comments section below I have dropped the car for paint and I did choose a color but it's not supposed to be done for a few more days so if you let me know and I want to change my mind I have enough time to call them and change thanks a lot to Rob Freddie for letting me use the clips of his video Rob is a big supporter of fair use at least I think and as always if you have any questions for me at all you can hit me up using my contact information in the description box well guys these all off for watching and next time we check in we're gonna have a painted Jaguar hopefully [Music]
