hey everyone it's Ben Hardy here and in today's video we'll be having the ultimate truck comparison wool Silverado comparison to be exact we are comparing every single powertrain that you can get in the new Silverado so that means we're comparing the 274 cylinder to the 53 V8 to the 3-0 Duramax and finally to the 62 V8 to find out which powertrain is the best before we get into this video though a huge shout out link here to the large trailer Chevy here in Murray Utah forking some time with all four of these trucks to make this comparison possible all four of these are available for sale and if you don't know the large Miller Chevy here in Murray does not charge any sort of markups over MSRP whatsoever so if you want a great deal on a new Chevy definitely reach out to them link to their inventory in the description down below ask for Nick engage if you need any help and then on a side note if you want to save time and money the next time you purchase a car link to my carbine guide in the description down below let's get into it [Music] please now before we dive into the engine specs I do want to mention that I did my best to make this comparison as Fair as possible by picking out trucks that were relatively the same with equipment so the 27 truck is a Trail Boss the 5-3 truck is an rst but it has the Z71 package so it has more aggressive tires similar to a trail boss and then we've got a trail boss with the Duramax and then at the end we've got a ZR2 with the 6.2 liter V8 so I know not a perfect comparison but you know as good as I could manage with the inventory that we have in today's world but anyways let's start with the first powertrain which is a turbocharged 2.7 liter four-cylinder that goes through an 8-speed automatic transmission now it produces 310 horsepower and then 430 pound-feet of torque and in the Trail Boss guys you're gonna be able to get 17 around town and then 18 on the highway when it comes to fuel economy now the next powertrain is a naturally aspirated 5.3 liter V8 that goes through a 10-speed automatic transmission now this one does not have the dfm system fuel economy's 14 around town 19 on the highway with this truck Power outputs are 355 horsepower and then 300 183 pound-feet of torque the next powertrain is the Duramax Diesel it's a three liter inline six it goes through a 10-speed automatic transmission power outputs are 305 horsepower and then 495 pound-feet of torque with fuel economy being 21 around town and then 23 on the highway and then finally we've got the 6.2 liter V8 that goes through a 10-speed automatic transmission fuel economy is 14 around town and then 17 on the highway with power outputs being 420 horsepower and then 460 pound-feet of torque now that we've gone over the specs there's a few things that we can pull out of this comparison so the diesel has the most torque and the best fuel economy the 62 V8 has the most amount of horsepower and the thing that's interesting about the four-cylinder is it has more torque than that 5.3 V8 that sits right next to it now I have happened to have been able to review a bunch of different packages on the Silverados and I look at the fuel economy every single time I review a truck and here's what I've noticed if you have the trucks equipped exactly the same with options you just have different powertrains the Duramax is always going to get the best fuel economy and then the 62 V8 is actually usually pretty close in fuel economy to the 5.3 V8 and then the four cylinder is usually just slightly better with fuel economy when you compare it to the 5-3 and to the 6-2 foreign go over Towing and payload specs I do want to mention that none of these trucks are equipped with the max trailering package and so this is going to be actually pretty comparable when you especially compare the towing specs to each other so starting here with the 270 you guys can see the stickers I'll show you the stickers because everyone likes stickers 1791 pounds of payload capacity and then conventional towing capacity 9 000 pounds now with the 5.3 liter V8 you guys can see 1798 pounds of payload capacity and then conventional Towing 9 200 pounds and then taking a look at the diesel 1595 with a payload 9000 with the towing and then finally six two V8 you guys can see 1438 with a payload and then 8 900 pounds with the towing well that was kind of surprising we just learned that a four-cylinder truck can apparently out tow a 6.2 liter V8 truck now something to mention is the max towing capacity of something like the 3.0 Duramax or the 62 V8 is going to be higher than the four cylinder because you can get the max trailering package which like with the 62 V8 or the 30 puts you at like 13-ish thousand pounds roughly and so although the specs with these trucks that we have today shows that that thing's actually Towing monstrosity in reality right those two trucks if equipped properly would out tow it no problem now the last thing that I want to go over before we take these trucks out and drive them is going to be the price of each of the powertrains now the cost of each powertrain is going to vary package to package but here's what it typically looks like Chevy will pay you fifteen hundred dollars to take the 274 cylinder that is correct Chevy will pay you to go for the four banger now we're with the 53v8 it's standard on most packages so it's usually a no cost option and then if you pop over to the Duramax it's usually a pretty pricey upgrade anywhere from like 900 on the low side is what it looks like but most packages it's usually about a 2500 upgrade that's what it is in the case of this Trail Boss and then with the ZR2 the 62 happens to be standard but with most trucks it looks like you have to spend about like three thousand dollars to add the six to V8 obviously you need to look at the exact package you're looking into to determine the exact cost of the powertrain upgrade and now with that being said well let's see if the four cylinder is as bad as it seems because I mean Chevy is literally paying you to take a four cylinder and they're asking you to pay you know 2500 to 3 000 to take either the diesel or the 62 V8 so let's head out okay well starting off in the four cylinder because I figure we'll go from the uh least expensive powertrain to the most expensive and also fuel range low that never happens in Ben Hardy video we always got to risk it for the biscuit though so let's hope that we don't run out of fuel with this but this isn't gonna be a super long drive because I gotta obviously fit four vehicles in one video so it's not like we can go super far but I say that what we start off with is just punching with each Powertrain because the big part of this video is just seeing how they accelerate right again we're at about 4 000 feet elevation here in Utah and so you know that's that's pretty high up uh turbocharged engines though always perform really well at higher elevation or they perform better rather uh at higher elevation compared to non-turbo charged engines and so you know I I'll go ahead and Limb and say that that's a pretty solid acceleration there I guess we'll get another acceleration here at the 2-7 this thing moves why does this Cube have to get out in front of us Honda drivers am I right uh so what I feel like we have discovered here with the two seven is you know acceleration is pretty solid it does make some interesting sounds because again it is a four-cylinder and a pickup truck it definitely takes a second to get used to it but here at higher elevation it's it's a pretty Punchy powertrain um and so with that being said I know this truck doesn't I mean these are all new trucks so they're not gonna have like a ton of miles on it but let's see oh seven eight okay we're getting so with our little drive with flooring actually this will be cool we'll see what the fuel column is like with flooring it so with flooring it a couple times we get eight miles per gallon here in the 2.7 liter four-cylinder so I guess we'll compare the flooring it fuel economy with the other pickup trucks so setting off in the 5-3 V8 now and it'll be interesting to drive this back to back with the 270 because you know what you'll hear a lot from Chevy dealers and from Chevy themselves is the the 27 is a great 5-3 alternative right and I mean when you look at the power figures it kind of makes sense because although this has more horsepower 355 compared to the 310 and the two seven this is down on torque on 383 versus 430 and then two seven and it's naturally aspirated which means that it probably won't feel as Punchy here at high elevation but let's see you know what man Chevy's not gonna like this I mean there is a perceivable difference the the two seven definitely has a torquier feel definitely has that turbo shove but this is such a big engine I mean it's it's like what oh yes literally like twice the size 2.7 versus 5.3 um it doesn't feel that much slower really it's it's about I mean they're they're like neck and neck at least in terms of what you feel as a driver like yeah I mean this this feels just is this feels just as Punchy as that two seven got another acceleration here this partial throttle uh I think part of why this might feel so Punchy is the transmission too this has the 10 speed the two Seven Stars GM's eight speed and although the 8-speed's decent it's no match for the 10 speed so I think that the 2-7 would benefit greatly if it was paired to the 10 speed I think the the ratios that this 10 speed has and the shift speeds and everything I think that it would help it out quite a bit but yeah that's an interesting conclusion for me to come to because like I've I mean I've driven them so much but like driving them back to back really shows me that I I like I get the benefit of the two seven but I think I think out of those two I'd probably go five three foreign [Applause] [Applause] off here in the Duramax and I realize I forgot to do the fuel economy thing for the 5.3 so we're just gonna we're just not gonna I well actually since we're not gonna do it we'll do it here for the uh diesel and then I'll do it for the six two but sorry I didn't do it for the five three so there we go reset with the fuel economy oh dang this thing's got torque this thing is crazy still getting 20 20 oh no that's miles per hour I was gonna say still again 20 miles per gallon somehow but no that's not miles per hour this thing is by far out of the trucks I've driven this this has been the punchiest yeah we'll see it seems like the fuel economy is going up a lot faster on this one which makes sense again it's got the highest rating and the thing about diesels is even when you push them they still seem to be very economical this one's also really quiet you know when I got on it obviously it was you know up there but you know not on it it's pretty dang quiet this thing's so torquey and actually you know what I'll do is I'll go check the trip computer on the 5 3 when I get back and I'll tell you guys what it said in I get into the 6-2 with this comparison I think I like this one so far the most out of the bunch and we have the highest mpg rating with our flooring it tests but yeah I mean it's just this powertrain's so buttery smooth it has so much torque I mean it is crazy how like torquey and Punchy this one is out of the bunch so what I've learned with the diesel is well yeah I mean that's way better than two seven show the two seven was like less than 10 MPG with our little flooring it test whereas this one's almost 15. and this one's definitely torquiest so far I mean right off the line there I mean it was it was going um and it just really good feels smooth with the feel and then the yeah everything's great about this I'm I'm a fan [Music] foreign ly six two V8 with low fuel this one's probably the most worrisome because we got the biggest engine and we got the least amount of fuel what will happen I guess you guys will have to watch to see um but anyways uh this one Probably sounds I mean the 53 sounds really good but this one Probably sounds the best but I'd say they both sound really good I mean you can't go wrong with the V8 sound and well good gravy um yeah this one's the fastest by far I mean there's no competition uh even even though the Duramax has more torque because of the horsepower Advantage with this thing I mean this is the punchiest there is no there's no arguing that that's crazy even though this truck and the thing to note is this truck out of all the trucks we've driven has the biggest tires and so the fact that this like moves it the quickest with the biggest tires that just shows how punchy the 62 V8 is oh and we got a gonna make sure I do our run navigation gotta make sure I do our fuel economy oh cool it's already setting it 5.7 solid so uh so far this one's showing me worst fuel economy out of the bunch I guess we'll get another little acceleration here man this thing is so much fun it's just quick and I will say I am a big fan of the ZR2 suspension it's it's great but let's kind of something's up here with the six two um so really smooth so what I've learned the eight speed not my favorite the 10 speed big thumbs up 10 speeds just smooth um and it looks like this is gonna oh I also for October five three the five three fuel economy was about the same as the two seven it looks like this is going to be pretty similar as well so yeah when it comes to fuel economy and I mean if you're worried about that I guess Duramax is about to go because these are all yeah they're all pretty similar in actual and again this isn't like a long-term test so it's not the best thing but like I feel like I floored it equally with all of the trucks and I drove about the same amount of distance and so yeah this will this will be an interesting summary so to sum things up let's quickly rank the powertrain so I'm going to rank the Duramax as my favorite out of the bunch the 62 V8 is going to be my second favorite and then the 5-3 and then the two seven now I came into this review thinking that I would like the two seven more than the five three because again it does have more torque it is turbocharged here at elevation but it didn't really feel all that much quicker and seeing that it you know again this is a short test so it's not like the best test in the world but seeing over the course of that short test it was pretty similar in fuel economy with the 62 V8 and with a 53 V8 I'm kind of like you know what I'm just gonna stick with an old school V8 uh but with that being said you know if it were my money and I'm gonna be buying a Chevy truck I'm gonna go with the Duramax I just think that that is the best powertrain frankly I think it's the best powertrain in a pickup truck well halftime pickup truck period so let me know which powertrain you would pick
