today we're looking at the ever popular chevrolet silverado we'll drive through its development and evolution we'll also see which silverado model years are good to consider and which ones you should avoid if you're looking to buy used so hop in and let's go for a ride ever wonder where the name chevrolet comes from it's from swiss car driver and automotive engineer louis chevrolet who co-founded the company with william c durant that was in 1911. louie envisioned high-end cars while william thought that affordable cars were a better strategy one of the first models they made was the chevrolet classic six it was designed to compete with the ford model t but the chevy classic six was priced too high for most americans needless to say it didn't sell very well louie was only with the company for three years we could say they broke up due to creative differences ever stopped to wonder about the bow tie behind the chevrolet logo the story goes that william durant found inspiration from a wallpaper designed at a hotel in paris although there are accounts from his wife that william borrowed the concept from an existing company in the coal industry whatever the case has become an iconic mark that millions recognize down to today william durant was a fascinating character he was an american entrepreneur who also helped pound general motors his grandfather henry h krepo was governor of michigan as a teenager young william dropped out of school to work his grandfather's lumber yard and then spent some time as a cigar salesman in 1886 he and joshua dort started the flint road cart company which made horse-drawn carriages in 15 years the company grew to become one of the world's largest carriage makers consider this their startup capital was two thousand dollars which is equivalent to about fifty eight thousand dollars in today's dollar but the business grew to two million which by today's terms is almost 58 million so you can see he wasn't a lazy lad but a hard worker and opportunist by 1900 the development of gas-powered horseless carriages was growing in the united states but their price was high and the quality was low at first william considered these early automobiles to be noisy smelly and dangerous it said that he didn't even want his own daughter to ride in one by the early 20th century his company had become the leading horse-drawn carriage manufacturer and largest in the united states but times are changing more and more of these automobiles started to appear on american streets and with that came public safety issues the public wanted better government regulation over these horseless carriages and this is where william saw opportunity though he disliked cars or the so-called self-propelled carts as he called them he wanted to solve the issue of public safety and make money on it so william bought the buick motor company at the time it was just a local car company with meager sales and ridden with huge debt williams plan was to use durant dorts financial and manufacturing resources to promote the company as a result buick eventually became the best selling car in america overtaking former leaders ford cadillac and oldsmobile williams main competitor was henry ford both men had fundamentally different views on business henry ford was placing his bid on a ford model t his approach was to offer the public just one model that was simple and affordable no need to complicate matters by giving people multiple options but william saw things differently his experience in the carriage business taught him that people like options that's why his approach to cars was to present multiple models each which catered to different income levels and consumer preferences that's why in 1908 william founded the general motors corporation it united 13 car makers including buick ozemil cadillac oakland elmore plus some 10 makers of auto parts and accessories but unfortunately by 1911 general motors suffered significant loss and they were losing the competition to the ford motor company a group of boston shareholders blamed william durant and removed him from management but william wasn't one to get down and stay down that same year he partnered with swiss race car driver and automobile engineer louis chevrolet they co-founded a brand new automobile company called chevrolet a few years later in 1915 william would buy out his partner's shares and buy enough general motor shares to once again become gm's president but back to the main story about chevrolet trucks before the chevy silverado appeared on the market there was another chevy model which would ultimately lead to the silverado it all started with the ck it was a series of trucks made by gm and marketed by gmc and chevrolet it was a wide range of vehicles from pickups to chassis cab trucks and medium duty trucks it would serve as the basis for future gm full-size suv the ck was manufactured from 1960-2002 it was replaced by the silverado starting in the 1999 model year the abbreviation ck was used both for the model designation and as the internal code for the model the letter c stood for two-wheel drive and the k for four-wheel drive prior to that its predecessor was a chevrolet task force truck which would later greatly influence the ck it was also the first truck to offer an independent front suspension and that was five years before ford's twin i-beam front suspension for this trucks used the straight axle on leaf springs but with this new innovation the independent suspension made the gm front end superior on the road the truly independent design gave ck trucks better handling and a more car-like feel than a drive the ck competing with the ford f-series and dodge d-series should later be known as the dodge ram trucks enter the 1990s gm changed the labeling of its trucks letter c would no longer be used for the two-wheel drive trucks but instead only the letter k would be used to distinguish between the two versus four-wheel drive jm also began to use a new number series to categorize each model according to payload capacity for example the k thousand referred to half a ton and the k 1500 for three quarters of a ton and k 2500 for one ton in 1999 gm replaced fourth generation ck pickups with the new lineup in other words they ditched the ck name plate all together in favor of the name silverado we can divide silverado trucks into two groups one group is for general consumers and includes the 1500 2500 and 3500 the second group is for commercial use and includes the 4 500 50 500 and 6500 the biggest difference between these two groups is payload and towing capacity the light duty uses the 1500 name and it's for general light work and drive silverado 1500 has a 5.3 liter ecotec 3 v8 engine with dfm or dynamic fuel management and offers up to 89.1 cubic feet of cargo space this is enough space to allow you to carry just about anything you need in one trip the hd variant or designation for heavy duty light truck basically it's a stronger version of the light duty truck and that's what we see in the 1500 hd 2500 hdn 3500 hd the silverado 2500 hd offers 910 pound-feet of torque takes the power of a 6.6 liter turbo diesel engine paired with an electronically controlled six-speed automatic transmission this gives the truck the ability to tow up to 18 100 pounds there's also the silverado 3500 hd it has the same engine and transmission as the silverado 2500 hd but it can output up to 401 horsepower deliver extra power and handle more payload now if you're considering a silverado which one is best for you as always you need to take your day-to-day drive into consideration and also understand the difference between the silverado truck did you know what a half ton truck is for example the chevy silverado 1500 belongs to the half ton truck category this means it's built for a light workload and is designed for everyday driving and comfort going up class next we have the three quarter ton truck like chevrolet silverado 2500 they can handle heavier workloads in harsher condition they're ideal for farm work and off-roading but the trade-off is that you'll be sacrificing fuel economy the silverado 3500 is in the one ton class again it's all about payload and towing this truck is heavier so it has a much stronger suspension to accommodate the extra weight this class is one to consider if you're constantly transporting heavy and large workloads or towing capacity is a big priority for your work we're talking about more torque in this truck let's compare the silverado 4500 versus 5500 this group is mainly for commercial use they both have the same engine a 6.6 duramx l5dv8 so the power output is the same at 300 horsepower and 700 pound-feet of torque where they differ is their towing capacity and gross vehicle weight or gvwr the gvwr is a grading system regulated by the u.s department of transportation to help classify large trucks it's the maximum weight a vehicle can safely handle and transit this weight includes the truck itself fuel cargo driver and passengers the gvwr of the 2021 silverado 4500 is 14 sixteen thousand five hundred pounds the gv wr of the fifty five hundred is seventeen thousand five hundred to nineteen thousand five hundred pounds but some of the toughest jobs require exceptional power and he'll look at the silverado 6500 hd chassis cab it has the same standard 6.6 duramx v8 turbo diesel engine with allison automatic transmission but the gvwr for the 6500 goes up to 23 500 pounds now if you're looking to buy a used silverado which models would be the best of which are the ones to walk past with your eyes closed according to reports 2008 silverado had the worst consumer rating the main problem with this model was excessive oil consumption would knock you back 2 700 bucks to repair other serious issues included fuel gauge failure strange steering noises and erratic speedometer and multiple check engine light problems if you'd rather save money by opting for an even older model just take caution with the 2004 silverado it had problems related to interior accessories steering electricity breaks the air conditioning premature failure with a hydraulic pump on the other hand if you're really wanting to use model that's not super old be cautious with the 2017 silverado there've been reports about brakes not working properly or it takes more distance than normal to come to a stop there's also an issue related to the failure of the transmission protection system sensor that'll trigger the wheel on the opposite side of the faulty sensor causing the truck to suddenly jerk to one side the front airbags may also not deploy and the control arm can break off the bushing due to poor weld even a 2019 silverado is not quite what we hoped for due as poor fuel economy in addition the infotainment screen may freeze from time to time and the passenger side airbag may not inflate properly there's also problems with the battery wires this can cause the truck to stop and the abs warning light may not come on if you're looking to buy use the model you should take a look at include the 2012 silverado it's generally recognized as one of the most reliable trucks in the lineup and has been considered a standout model plus it's equipped with a 5.3 liter v8 engine producing 315 horsepower which has made it to a six-speed automatic transmission but now you tell me which silverado do you like and why please comment below and share your experience and history of this truck if you enjoyed
