welcome back everybody this is Chad with Iraq veteran 8888 and today we're going to answer the question what is the real deal with 224 Valkyrie a lot of people have been talking you know about it over the past year just about since it was announced and there's a lot of good information on the internet there's a lot of bad information on the internet and I've been doing a ton of testing with this caliber and a couple of different platforms and we're going to talk a little bit more about it as we go but for starters take some shots from about 300 yards out to five and we're gonna see what what happens here now these are some 90 grain match hand loads that I cooked up so we're gonna see what happens all right you ready and it man one go for the coyote the coyote why does that coyote have to be the subject of our scorn contempt I'm gonna hold four minutes and just go center mass here and see what happens go man all right over the top yep I'm a whole two minutes all right pack it up good you're in there good yep all right I'm gonna push out the five go ahead I'm showing nine point nine minutes see if that's right not bad I'm just gonna hold here well at least the bullets are stabilizing oh yeah all right so I'm gonna hold we're hold ten minutes and see what happens with this one shot here you're in there right in the neck yep again right over the top of his head okay I'm gonna hold down to hold down right around eight mil or eight minutes you're on it okay eight minutes keep doing that I'm out of ammo of this 10 shot magazine today t8 and earlier this year we we got in one of the CMG one in seven twist Valkyries to try out and we had all the factory ammunition and we went out and grouped and cronograph to all the stuff and we had some strange results some of the ammo was pretty hot like way over the listed velocity out of a 24 inch barrel which is what federal specified for this caliber and we weren't really seeing the accuracy that we had heard you know about from the caliber so we kind of hung it up for a little while trying to figure out what was going on we got another rifle in and it was exhibiting the same problems so we were looking at the reamer depth you know the basically the free bore of the projectile until it reaches the lands and grabs onto them and stabilizes that projectile going down the barrel and then also the twist rates so this is actually a pretty fast twist barrel this is a one in a one in six and a half twist barrel from Excalibur this is a stainless steel barrel that's cryogenically treated it's got thermal fluting it's 22 inches long and it has been fantastic for these heavy grand pills I've done a ton of accuracy testing with this barrel with the factory ammunition and also developed some hand loads using Dan Newbery's optimal charge weight test and I've got this thing shooting sub minute and for me with an AR sub minute accuracy out of an AR even one minute accuracy I have an AR is plenty you've got a lot of variables to contend with in a semi-auto platform the first round being loaded into the chamber you know off of the magazine the last round as the bolt hold-open or holds open all those variables come into play when you're talking about the accuracy between an AR and something like a precision rifle like a bolt-action I think a lot of people have expectations this platform in this caliber that are a little bit unwarranted in my opinion but anyways guys I'll share some data down in the description box below there's going to be a link to a Google Docs page with pretty much everything that I've collected thus far and this load is actually one that I cooked up is using federal brass we have CCI primers the 90 grants here are match King bullets these are the newer ones that are tipped they've got the higher BC of 563 which is extremely impressive for an AR sized platform to stick a bullet in there with that high VC I mean you can see how fast those things get downrange and they do carry a lot of energy but I'm gonna take a few more shots and I'm going to turn it over to a special guest of ours Remington littles hanging out with us and he wanted to get behind this thing and cheated a little bit but I give you a little rundown on this rig real fast it's nothing special guys I mean most of these parts I had laying around the house and I just threw the same together I mean as we say before the barrel is kind of hard of accuracy in an ar-15 but there's a few other things that we did to this rig to really squeeze out the accuracy and the consistency that we wanted to see but this is a standard a tube buttstock nothing special I'm gonna tell the local shop and just pick one of these up BCM grip anderson lower receiver and this is I think an arrow upper about $40 BC mm lock rail which is super nice I just love these 15 inch rails and on this particular setup we did lap the upper receiver I was a little skeptical as to what the benefit would be to that process but if you think about a bolt action and truing up the receiver to the barrel mating surface and getting everything nice and square and concentric with one another it's the same idea you're basically just shaving that front of the receiver down where it mates up with the barrel extension and getting 100% contact there and I did notice a vast improvement in the consistency of the groups I went out and I shot 25 rounds after we did that and basically five fouling shots and then four groups for record one right after each other and I didn't even go over a minute I mean the group sizes were below point eight if I remember correctly fantastic results from that and I swear every AR that we put together from now on is going to have a lapped up receiver just to minimize the variables there's really no reason not to do it no I mean it's a very simple process and we'll show you guys that in a future video as well down in the shop there but on this particular setup I am running a superlative arms piston kit and I'm running this thing in the restrictive gas mode I had heard that the bleed off mode was actually quieter with a suppressor but in my test with a bnk 22:09 I found that that's not the case the restrictive mode actually is quieter at the ear than di and if you think about it you know you don't have gas coming back into the action and coming out of the ejection port like you would on a DI system and it's very very comfortable to shoot nice low tone out of this can up here and this is actually something a little special it's actually a prototype can from RMS to suppressors and it's called the hope hi you guys will be seeing some more about it in a while but this uses some old-school technology from Jogja Deenie so you got the old mega baffle in this thing so 20 year old technology that's still kicking but today I just love it but running the Atlas bipod up front and I've got a guys Lee a National Match trigger in this thing and I've got a small little ant I can't device from Knight's armament that I dropped on the back of the saying a little UCM charging handle and on top we've got a vortex razor optic this is a four and a half to twenty seven this is kind of a swing optic that we put on precision guns to try to get the most accuracy potential out of it to get that 9 de fication up there and shoot tiny groups and just see what's really going on but without further ado I'm gonna take some shots at some other ranges and we're gonna take this thing out to 800 man the way you're talking about all that cryogenically treated mess man makes me think of like the bullets are gonna warp like on Star Trek I mean like you know you're just gonna warp it from the gun to the target and it doesn't even fly through the air yeah maybe but one of the big things with cryo treated barrels that I've seen in doing chrono work is that you do get a noticeable velocity increase going from a standard like stainless steel barrel that even might be like hand lapped and everything and just finally finished inside the bore with a cryo treated barrel I've noticed velocity increases like in a Remington 700s of about 60 to 80 feet per second out of a 20 inch barrel I just can't compare and basically apples to apples so the barrel is quite impressive I've never really dealt with the excalibur before and I'm really I'm getting on about thirteen or fourteen hundred rounds down the barrel here and you know I've heard some of the the barrel life estimates on two to four is not really all that great maybe a couple thousand rounds before you really start seeing accuracy degradation but I mean so far I haven't really seen anything that would warrant any sort of worry or needing a barrel replacement but as we shoot this gun more will report back and also I'm going to be picking up a one in six twist barrel to test as well that's about the fastest thing that's available for the caliber currently and we're gonna see how it does and speaking of the twist rate one of the other things that I've noticed with that particular one in six and a half is it shoots the 60 grain nozzle errs exceptionally well you wouldn't think that they would stabilize real well out of a fast twist like that but man they are money out of this thing it's just so awesome but enough talking guys have heard enough of my my mouth here so I'm just gonna I guess I'll just hold Eric you over these targets maybe the whole thing a couple of things that all I'll mention yeah because you've shot it some - I've shot it some - one one thing I'll mention - is the time of flight is stupid fast it's a really fast round it gets down there good go ahead no you're good go ahead I'm just gonna I'm gonna go ahead and dial up so I got a good consistent point but you know it's a fast round it gets down there really fast and then - I mean it is a very hot powder charge is and when you get into a large powder charge that is such a fast burning powder in such a small bore gun you are gonna get an appreciable amount of throat wear sooner than later so I would be really curious to see what the true longevity is of these barrels for sure but um maybe we'll get the expected maybe we get the board doesn't matter what you wind up barreling something - I mean certain cartridges are just throat burners yep and this is one of them it certainly is man high performance cartridge so it's gonna really you know be throat burner alright so I'm gonna hold dead on out 5 yeah go ahead and I'm gonna just aim for the kind of neck area and see where I'm at I dialed up eight minutes yes uh your wins looking good so just one drop one in shoulder area you guys left alright I see it I'm gonna hold over from win just a tiny bit yep it's probably drifting you just joke [Applause] again yeah about center mass you're favoring the left yeah I see that I'm gonna shoot one more shot and then I'll move over again here okay good about a three inch group yep that opened up about four inches but not bad yeah I'm just gonna keep the same point of aim and she don't go maybe a couple more I don't know the wind must have died down a little bit yeah alright I'm gonna go for a hitch out here let's see okay right over the top oh right over the top ah Mohawk right there in the neck kind of yep right in the same area yep yep I'm impressed at how hard that round hits at 502 well c / g of ballistics here at 5 I've got still got 805 foot-pounds at that range about 2,000 feet per second so that's getting down alright let me dial down to 450 I want to shoot that one there 450 yeah that one at 450 o-ring a little bit better the one at 500 guys is to stick in all of these gongs our shoot steel comm targets so it's got more of a clack being a stick in but this one should ring a little louder here at 450 whenever you ready yeah got a dial down so I can find it fine all right 450 all right so I'm at 6 minutes may have to adjust my drop one in see what happened all right this will ring louder keep doing that yep four inch group not terrible okay very consistent and hard hitting 350 here for a sword action like that I mean that's good you going 350 yeah just Center the target send it impact impact impact yep I mean head shots three-inch group let's see head shots here right over the top right over the top dadgummit right around the top no I guess we're gonna have to get Remington behind this gun we need to get a good shooter I'm tired of shooting I've shot it a lot let's get Remington behind this thing and send some rounds down here to 500 and then we're gonna we're gonna shoot this thing out eight out of some half-size to 20s as well and see what we can do I mean holding on steel is a little bit different than you know holding on paper but practical accuracy man is there I mean I hope you guys can see that so there is let's move on alright so Remington is gonna take a few shots with the two to four here and I did have to make a slight correction to our dope I remember the other day when I was shooting it it was shooting about an inch high at 100 yards for the 0 so I corrected for that and looks like we're right on point so what are you gonna shoot first man I'll shoot the coyote the coyote yeah so bring it up two point four minutes and we're gonna see if that sails it right in there hopefully this is about right it's a hot one mr. little it is hot out here guys come back here in the shade spotting you I'm pretty good right about now I ain't all right our coyote Senate when ready yeah got a little bit of wind left right yep there we go oh yeah God that thing gets down there so fast perfect keep doing that add that wind just push in a little bit but not bad man dude I could do that all day awesome light recoil I mean yeah talk about an upgrade for AR ah let's try 350 okay so 350 you're looking at 3.7 seems like this dope is spot-on for the most part we'll see what it doesn't long range yeah oh for sure Senate win right yep yep that'll do all right let's see headshot that guy you're favoring a little bit on the right so hold a little bit left for wind two minutes right there at the chin yep yeah now that target he's aiming at guys is a 4-inch square basically on top of that half size D 28 there so at that range it's just slightly over about a minute size target you're gonna go up to 450 yep all right so for 56.7 seems to be tracking pretty good it does and guys you know I've heard some people talk about some of the problems with the caliber I've noticed uh in reloading the primary pockets are starting to open up a little bit you know and I've loaded this ammo this is the third loading on this particular lot of brass and I'm probably gonna have to sort through and figure out which brass is going to be unusable after this point but it looks like you might be able to get maybe three loadings out of it max and there are some issues too with bullets separating out of the barrel and that's one thing that federal is looking at they actually kind of did a soft recall on most of the match ammo that's out there basically they're going back to the drawing board with it but as long as you're a hand loading it and you can seat that bullet out a little bit further to the max magazine length which these receded to 2.2 a toe and get that jump down to about 40,000 I haven't had a single round come apart out the barrel I've had three factory rounds out of about a thousand rounds down the pipe that had that issue so if that's any consolation you guys I mean this thing is still pretty new it's still kind of in its infancy and people are still figuring it out so are you running a our max or 6.8 these are actually 6.8 speck mags um for specific magazines those that you have right there the 25 rounders are made by dnh okay so nice still get some high capacity out of it almost one thing too I haven't had a single feeding issue or extraction issue or anything out of these magazine that's true so it's been killer so 450 yep all right you dialed up that was six point seven six point seven correct so anyone ready [Applause] you're a you're hitting the bolt so keep whatever point of aim all right you're at and run it yep keep doing that all right you're favoring over on the right shoulder got a hold of hold for wind on the left shoulder yes sir yep keep that same hold you just stack those two rounds right next to each other right there at the bolt yeah yeah you pulled that one a little low yep I see that one man that's a nice trigger in it too I like that guys leave national match good stuff 500 500 is what I saw earlier I was about eight minutes I was just holding okay so try eight point three yep sure hot all righty all right send it when you're ready and then we'll move out to eight and you can take the first few shots all right didn't see that one nope agreed let's check that thing out that's the first round that is separated in my hand loads what bullet are you shooting now that those are the 90 grand Sierra's match Kings might be hopefully that's something there's a little remedy it happened on camera it did there it is all right you ready yes and okay there you go yeah keep that same hold man send a minute yes sir yes sir now you're just you're getting a little too crazy now you have three shots within a couple of inches a man that's awesome well it is an AR you know it's always gonna throw some weird shots here and there yeah that's okay what's wrong goes long way yep let's push this thing out to 8:00 and see what it'll do longer range I'm excited let's do it all righty folks we're gonna take a few shots with a 224 out to 800 yards holding 19.7 mills for elevation minutes minutes sorry minutes for elevation and then I'm gonna be holding three for wind we'll see what happens 800 yards watch the first round check out the camera don't say that don't jinx me all right sitting when you're ready take time hey are the big hash marks one-minute all the individual hash marks yep one minute I believe yeah okay had to think about it for a sec hi are you aiming for the half size D 28 on the right yep alright so you hit elevation was perfect but you hit like mm three feet two feet left okay yeah a hold less wind it's crazy I couldn't see it that's so much Mirage down there oh yeah all right you were right over the top of the Gong slightly left by about six minutes or I should say six MOA so at that range see 6 inches Beauvoir I can't do the math in my head so fast it's too much it's not smart enough six inches literally like to the left and slightly high second hash is so hard like going from minutes to mils and back and forth yep I'm not good at that all right that was the same place you're you're can you see your impacts at all I can see the splash but the Mirage is super thick okay so you're you're over the top of the gong okay like but where the black mark is you're over the top of the going about a foot and here to the left still about six inches so just just hold down like low right on the like off of the plate there yeah the dirt and sell one in and see what happens you're still hitting the same place like I left interesting that looked more centered bring your hold down just a touch more okay right over the top I have no idea they're getting down there but I don't know where power just go ahead and look go over to the big dome I might be able to see the splashes a little bit better okay I had hi holding like way off target now with it within the scope really we're [Music] that was an impact but I can't tell where I think it's on the right side but I can't see where [Applause] looks like it's hitting near the bottom of the plate but just keep that same point of aim I see your group okay keep going yep it's so hard to see that small target cause it's right there kind of in the shade yeah yeah am I like right next to that bottom you're to the left your group is forming by the to the left side of that bottom dot okay I am holding so right underneath the top left dot that's where I'm putting putting the third hash mark and just putting it right in the corner of on the right hand quadrant within the scope I'm go right in there it's in four so let's see I transfer that hold I couldn't see where that shot was are you trying to aim at a different target there I thought about for a hot SEC but I went back to it just keep that same hole just just sail some more rounds in there so yeah no idea yeah takes a minute for it to come back the flight time is only one point one four seconds it shows on the ballistics app here that's pretty darn quick alright that was another one that's separated I think they'll get all this stuff figured out but we want to bring this rifle out and just see what would happen but literally we turned the cameras on and then I've got bullets that start separating but honestly I think that that powder that I'm using the 2,000 mr I don't think it's very temperature stable and I think we're getting some pretty hot velocities I was already near the the top end of the spectrum was load data anyways that's where I found the best accuracy but I think I'm running a little bit hot today because it is a scorcher yeah here so this is all kind of R&D guys you know it's just just bringing you along for the ride I mean that group that you shot on the plate once you got your hold yep I mean it doesn't look like it's over maybe eight inches yeah I mean that's holding true with MOA capabilities of that particular barrel and the caliber so just a few quarks to work out but I really do believe in the caliber yeah absolutely like once the bullet gets figured out I think it's just gonna be a very capable of rifle setup a lot of energy you should have a few rounds left over just go ahead and finish them up and hopefully we won't have any more separations there with the projectile yep safety dang one thing of note that little round does not move those plates very much at long range that's one definitely one disadvantage to the round itself it does get out there fast but spotting shots is a little bit difficult agreed man they're all just hanging out down there in the bottom quadrant of the place slightly left but I mean it's no not at all it's you know one in there one thing of note yeah is uh you ever heard of the LWR c68 lowers yeah so they make this special six eight upper and lower kit it's quite expensive but a lot of guys were saying that you could take that and run the two two four in it with the specialty mags and I think you get like fifty thousand the overall length so the mags are longer and everything to fit it super useful so to get that projectile out a little bit longer the magazine length yeah and still be within say so you can get it within like five or ten thousands yeah in these current barrels I think that that would be solid but man those receivers are pricey it's the only bad thing about it but I think you pay for what you get it's good stuff you do already and finish that mag off and guys I think we're I think we're gonna cool it for the day I mean I'm a little bit concerned about these hand loads being a little bit too hot at this point alright guys so we're seeing some of the problems that are apparent with the caliber in real time so it's crazy like the entire time I've been shooting this thing the only time I've had some of the issues was out of the factory ammo with the bullets separating but I I don't know if you know see arrows going back to the drawing board on the projectiles I've heard that some of the companies that are working on barrels or trident shorten that reamer up a little bit but then you run into the problem with the throat being you perfect for the 90s but then you can't really fit the 77 s in the 60s and the 75 s in there because of the different Oh JA shape so it's a quandary either way like have a barrel that's capable of shooting everything under the Sun and maybe just having to redesign the bullet with a little bit thicker jacket that might be the issue it's just that initial pressure getting that bullet started in the in the lands it's causing some issue and separating the core from the jacket and outside the barrel it's just sliding right out of there and coming apart but a few things we've note the accuracy is definitely there I mean the faster twist barrels are performing exceptionally well in the accuracy Department that I've seen like I said I will test a one in six twist as well but I might look at picking up one of the LWR c68 receiver sets and then setting it back up in this rig to be able to run those 90s out a little bit further and get them closer to the lands I probably will try a different powder it doesn't seem like the 2000 M R is really working out too well because it is hot today and I actually just put this magazine in the cooler for a few minutes to kind of cool the rounds off just a touch and see if maybe we can get a little bit better performance I'm gonna shoot 10 more rounds and guys I mean this is kind of what it is I mean you see what the calibers capable of I do think there's still some work that needs to be done on all fronts you know on the manufacturers side of things with the ammunition and with the available barrels and rifles that are out there but I don't want to see it go away because I think it does have a lot of potential but we'll keep you guys abreast of any sort of updates that we come up with and we're just going to go from there so let me take a few more shots Remington is going to spot and we're going to be getting out of this hot hot heat under that alright so I made a slight adjustment to my elevation and I'm just going to send one at the I'm gonna send one at the half size on the right Remington and just see where we're at here I should be able just about spot for myself all right I'm gonna send it that sound like an impact to me that looked like it was slightly high all right yep Piper Center all right you see that one nope it's all right the Mirage today all right I'm gonna move over to the 22 and I'm just going to keep that same hold a little bit low and see it's a little bit wider target yeah hopefully I won't contaminate your group down there but they can see it better than I can I go right ahead man yep right in the group oh right in yours yep okay I want to move up all right so I'm gonna hold dead center at the bottom end of the plate here and they should print slightly up like around that top left dot smacked it right on it up I mean I might be a hole in there cuz I cannot see it the Mirage is insane but like I said I mean what you see is kind of what you get I've done a lot of work with this caliber so far and I really do believe in its potential I think it came to market a little bit too soon perhaps without a lot of the testing that may have been necessary it's just when you see something new you come out and then you see everybody having issues with it it kind of raises a red flag you know but like I said I think Federal's got a really good thing going on with the caliber I think the idea is sound will it replace 65 Creedmoor mm I don't think so will it perform well in a bolt-action yes I think it will but if I was gonna build a bolt gun I probably would just build a 65 if I was looking for that you know high accuracy potential and just the high BC bullets that you can run in 65 I mean that caliber has proven itself ten times over but this one's still kind of like in it like I said is in its infancy but everything is performing very well today the Hope High is doing its job sounding great and as you can see I've got a dead air quemo on this thing so I've got it in the QD configuration it's still highly accurate but you can drop it on a full auto and burn the thing to the ground and we might be doing that in the future so stay tuned for that so where can they find you Remington if all the little hot chicks want to check you out on Instagram yeah you can find me on instagram at little Remington post a lot of outdoor content hunting fishing camping all sorts of stuff like that all from the shade the convenient shade of the spotting area oh yeah thing but anyways guys take care hope you enjoyed the video and I hope that you you've got some information from this video if you're looking into the caliber and hope that I can point you in the right direction and you know we'll continue to put out data as we collect it and be tuned in we'll probably put out some more videos as some upgrades to the caliber or the platforms come out so until next time guys so you see [Music] you
