so what's the story behind this all-american sandwich that's been served in diners and school cafeterias since the 1950s hmm stay tuned and find out hey everyone I'm Jill welcome to yester kitchen I've been studying food history for over 30 years taking more cooking classes and I can count and I'm the founder of yester kitchen if you're having fun please subscribe to the channel like the videos comment and share with your friends so today we're going to talk about the sloppy joe by delicious mess on the bun most of you have had it so there's about three stories about where it came from the first one is a started in sloppy joes bar in Havana Cuba which opened in 1913 nope the second one is that the started in sloppy joe's bar in Florida which opened in 1933 which it was emulating the Havana part nope most likely it was a variation on the loose meat sandwich and if you're from Iowa you know what I'm talking about if you're not essentially a loose meat sandwich is a hamburger on a button but instead of a patty it's just loose ground beef they throw a couple pickles on for good measure and it's really good so the story goes then in Sioux City Iowa there was a restaurant that served these loose meat sandwiches it was either Floyd angels cafe or yeild tavern there is no document on exactly which one it was but there was a cook named Joe who one day decided to put some tomato sauce and a loose meat sandwich and serve it and the sloppy joe was born there's really no you know documentation that his name was really job and it sure sounds good and Jill wasn't a very american name so it took off and it started appearing in cookbooks around nineteen forty nine and it made its way to diners and school cafeterias by the 50s and it was exploding and people loved it as a matter of fact the sloppy joe has worked so far across our country that it's in every region has a different name for it we call it sloppy joes but there is all kinds of names for different parts of the country that's not me Joe is known as and today I'm going to teach you a recipe just warming up my grill here today I'm gonna teach you a recipe that is from 1949 so pretty much at the beginning there is no original recipe for this because like I said the story was he threw some tomato sauce in that with that so it had to be developed so I'm gonna get started so I've already gotten ahead of you a little bit I have here 1 pound of ground beef I've already cooked it and I've already drained off all cup to that we're gonna start adding this stuff first I have a half a cup of tomato soup and a half a cup of ketchup [Music] then we've got a tablespoon of cider vinegar a tablespoon of brown sugar a tablespoon of mustard just use the plain standard yellow con you're gonna be fine look going everywhere and I'm making this go ahead start stirring that around a little bit and then we'll add our spices and our spices our 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon of celery see that's how I saw celery seed and a tablespoon I'm sorry a teaspoon of garlic powder but you can never have too much garlic so if you want to add more add more and we're just gonna mix all this around and then what you want to do is you want to let it simmer medium meat uncovered for about 10 minutes so I will be right back in ten minutes when we have our sloppy joe right now okay so ten minutes have gone by you want to stir it every now and then just to make sure everyone is in the party doing their thing and now it's time to put it on the bun and make it a sloppy joe so where did you first have your sloppy joe diner school cafeteria mom mine is either at home or at school cafeteria can't remember what we definitely had in the school cafeteria I remember they had a little ice cream scoop and they take a bun and scoop and keep talking anyway here's our sloppy joe look at that everyone's in the party and ones having fun and it's really it's a great sloppy joe recipe that's how popular sloppy joes were that the company actually said hey let's make this easy and they put like a season of sloppy joe sauce that all you got to do is add the ground beef but nothing beats homemade it's really easy as you saw so you want to take a bun I like the toast mine because you know it is sloppy and at least there's a little barrier and the toaster doesn't soak into the bun you have this like Justin Brayton bun on you so we're gonna bring in our plate that beautiful fifties plate there nice toasted bun and we're gonna take a little bit of our sloppy joe or a lot of our sloppy joe pending on how much you want you said this recipe will make about five but if you put more on it's gonna make less so your comp anyway look at that there you have it classic 1950s sloppy joe it's so good give it a try and relive the 50s and the 60s and the 70s and the 80s because sloppy joes are still popular today so enjoy it with your family enjoy with your friends enjoy it just by yourself and again if you're having fun please subscribe like the videos comment and share with your friends I'll be looking for your answers to that question and I really want to know where you had your first sloppy joe kind of cool or what your favorite recipe is or if you're an Iowa tell me about those loose meat sandwiches have a great day as always thanks for stopping by and remember history has never tasted so good [Music] you
