[Music] feral bull catchers have been working in the australian outback for over 100 years in the old days all mustering was done on horseback but in order to make a living nowadays bull catchers require specialized equipment and a unique set of skills we need the helicopter so we can go and scout the areas look at the pad going into this like there's a lot of animal here somewhere once the area is identified and the cattle numbers are determined then we go and make a deal with the landowner how are y'all walla come on right here yourself all right i know how much it means turn everything aside yeah so i definitely won't damage it or anything in exchange for access to their land bull catchers pay royalties to land owners we have just three years there good work this owners might end up with a couple hundred thousand dollars day most locations are so remote that simply getting there is a huge operation [Music] so to head out to some of these remote areas which have no cell phone coverage you have to bulldoze a track out there to build some of these roads in there is a marathon task a lot of people you know they wouldn't believe these sort of areas still exist it's really like turning up to a place back in old pioneering days [Music] quite often we have to pump water so that we can have water to drink water for a shower yeah i got hot water once camp is set up it's the main game to catch a ball you've got to get them quick without being too hard on them the helicopter does the main mustering rounding up mobs of feral cattle they direct the ground crews into [Music] positions here we go again joe [Music] it's organized chaos but we know what we're doing ball catching vehicles are fitted with mechanical arms designed to catch the animals safely [Music] ringers look after their animals ahead of transport animal health and safety is just paramount to us you know we just want to see them happy and in good condition they are just giving this wool some water host the ground room a bit make the yard a bit cool and then we put some feed in here from this morning keep them in good shape for the market next the cattle are sorted into sail groups by a process called drafting all cows 2 4 6. wayne will draft the cattle into the types for what the exporters want come on he's off to sydney that palette need a few more like him we'll do what we can livestock agents act on behalf of the bull catchers sourcing buyers for the cattle gotta get some photos these cattle now make sure the buyers are going to be happy with them at the end of the day we're going to get a pretty good result 24 more when the trucks arrive and all ready to go and ready to load you know it is exciting because you see all your hard work that you um you know you've all been working together as a team to get the job done and it's such a great moment it should be the best part of 160 000 on that truck so that's the one we look at you
