The lure of the life of a jackeroo | 7.30

I like to get up before the Sun take the food off film of the day and then I guess this time of year it's sort of making sure we're on top of everything moving a few mobs of cattle around if we need to you know my name is - Dawson I'm 22 years old I'm working on a remote cattle station feed Lou's station is about ATL is from both down and Alice Springs we run a herd of about 80,000 from and the majority then we get Salter to live export markets overseas I'll go up on a it was a pretty small hobby farm I guess an hour south of Adelaide dad was a still he's a winemaker and mum's a nurse at the moment the the managers owners are away which means it's just myself and and Hewitt so there's a huge responsibility goes for that you know but there's no what you can't call anyone a 22 year old running a cattle station is a pretty pretty frightening thing to think about but um yeah I'm pretty confident that we're we're doing it over Huy is our leading hand here at beta lo I think it just goes to show that you can form some pretty pretty incredible like lifelong friendships up here and we've people that you might not have otherwise met will tolerate it yeah I mean who we get along really well and we've been working together for a couple of years now and every day is different every day is challenging we operate over about 2.6 million acres which is a just a touch over a million hectares so it's a fair bit of country for us to cover when we're mustering it's reading your cattle understand where you need to be [Music] I do like our brahman heard a sort of I think they're very curious they've got a really nice personality just slimmed us he said you know telling you take a lot of pride in being a ringing from the coffin staff retention in northern Australia it's a pretty big issue for us it's it's rare on a lot of places that you know you do get people returning even for a second year let alone third and fourth year it did have a real stigma about it you know it's just rough-and-ready sort of cowboy is running around everywhere but i think i think we're becoming a really professional industry [Music] the closest partners about 140 kilometers away so it's the best part of a an hour and a half drive to get there so yeah it's a pretty pretty interesting cross-section of what society wants to get up there well off on a station you need to talk to the developers of tinder and get them focused in their rangering I reckon but you know is that opportunity getting tanned every now and again and yeah hopefully one day someone I think once you sort of start spending a bit of time and here it is something that flies on your mind a bit [Music] the future for me is interesting when I started a up yeah it was it was meant to be a gap year and I guess going into my fifth gap year now mom and dad is sort of starting to realize it maybe maybe there is more in it I can't even really imagine where I'd be had I stayed at home you know I've got a lot of a lot of friends that have gone to university nice and after five years they've got I don't even have a bit of paver they've got five years of hexed my dream job I love to have my own cattle station I think it's pretty nice you know not having your phone reception and Wi-Fi and things like that that you've got in the luxuries in your southern states you really do appreciate your surroundings every day it's nothing different you never know quite what you're going to expect hi I'm Lea sales thanks for watching this story if you'd like to watch more of 730 stories they are on the left of your screen and tap on the button below to subscribe and get the latest from ABC news
