BEST. ACTION. EVER. — Catching WILD scrub-bulls in Outback Australia [Part 1 of 2]

[Music] yeah you can't get rid of us that easy buddy i tried i tried it again so uh we've got to head out to uh i think it's called major walker yard or something to stock camp anyway we gotta go and meet up with uh clinton apparently them boys are out there uh chasing a few cattle around with ball catches and all that sort of jazz i'm not really sure where to go but uh apparently jesse's out there oh sweet sounds like a bit of fun gonna catch up with young guests awesome it's awesome i'm looking forward to meeting the man that's it that's it so we got to um yeah set up camp and give these boys a bit of a hand next couple of days like we said it's balls and barra these balls don't appear to be as friendly as the bearer you learn fast scrambles definitely don't like getting caught and then it's on boat versus boat in the all 4 adventure fishing comp a bit at stake here jesse hey he's going good you guys must have a fish because you've come up to brag haven't you no we want to do that yeah you guys going got anything no the team is on cape york heading to the community of pomparou on the gulf of carpentaria join them for the adventure uh this around is i'm not seeing anything but dry open paddocks yeah [ __ ] west coast in general i'm not talking about right right here driving past the barramundi my car sounds like this all right we must be getting close apparently um you go second grade turn right which we've done and then just past the windmill yep there she is the wind mill looks like the directions were right mike we're here find us a nice little spot to camp and let's set up a cabin well in my little uh message they said uh if they weren't there go on uh park under the tree as you come in to the left just past the shed and camp there if you want i said [Music] well it doesn't seem to be anyone around at the moment but they did say that when we turn up if they're not here just park under the shady tree i reckon this is the shady tree what do you reckon i'm blue mate they're just fine yeah and they said they'll be here later on this evening so let's set up camp boys and um have a bit of a fire going for when they get get in wait for the workers to come in yeah work job done apparently jessie's out with the boys we're here on the radio the bull catching team is a fair way off so it gives us plenty of time to set up base camp for the next few days how easy is that done here comes the workers that looks like them now this old dress we've got messy jess too yeah yeah we're getting fellas mate we meet again long time no see bud how you learning the ropes bull catching well we've set up camp as you can see we've got a fire gun we're going to cook up some grub a few balls left out in the bush there for us to come and help yeah mate we need another about 23 24. we'll get in all mate there you go got a job for us yeah helpful here help or hinder probably hinder you we can be hinderers we're good at hindering you guys got a bit of gear to chase them around a bit yeah we got the ranger yeah we got the quad bike that's a go at the chopper to give you a bit of direction put you in the right spot yeah yeah we're good sounds good real good keep away from the pointy end we'll be right back which is the pointy end again here with the horns on it so now it's sit around the fire as the sun goes down we work out a bull catching plan which sounds pretty full on and tomorrow is an early start early morning we head out with the team clinton needs around 25 more head to fill a quota now scrub balls are thought by many to be the most dangerous animal in the australian bush far more dangerous than a water buffalo which are larger but far slower than a scrub ball all right mate we're ready to go what's the go yeah we'll slip out here go up up to the southern end and have a look see if there's any bulls up there yeah nothing there we'll track back to the north and see if we can pick a few up yeah sweet so you want us to just sort of we'll follow you we're on channel 25 yep yeah yeah we run on that that'll be good and just sort of we'll just hang back to start and then once we get a bit of a plan you can join in and yeah yeah okay and so so the idea is for us you want us to sort of bring the bulls if we see one sort of or one comes in from the chopper you're sort of moving towards the top yeah moving towards the right hand like this side you know with the arm gotcha and yeah bringing him in and sort of stay on that side haze him in and we'll put the loop on him yeah too easy a little bit of hazing yeah good hazing i'd stay out of there the arms way yes stay away from the arm that'll really ruin your day i reckon okay let's do it these scrub balls live and die free out here some lines are generations long but they pose a huge problem for domestic herds spreading bulls are bred to be docile and are usually de-horned so no match if a large scrubber is taking them on so the thing about catching balls is it there's a few components that play into it you've got the chopper in the air spotting the balls you've got you know the buggies on the ground chasing them and and then you've got the bush to contend with you need the balls to stay out in the open because they are clever they do know how to how to hit the trees now you've gotta that's all gotta come into play and that whole time you've got a 900 to a thousand kilo beast go on as fast as he can to get away from him now you've got to put it all into into into a play and then hopefully you get that ball and you're time to a tree now these boys have been doing it for a long time and they do it very efficiently when the chopper has a good size pull or herd he goes high to give the ground crew an area to head for we're off on our first chase [Music] mate these boys are quick they're tying the first ball up as we arrive it's all about as little stress as possible to the animal dehorning or de-tipping needs to be done it's not only for our safety but the safety of the other bulls later when the bulls are in the yards or trucks they will go and kill each other most pools are already covered in battle scars from previous fights you got a lot of trust on a small bit of rope and clinton has assured me never trust the rope because they do break and when they break and you're in close proximity of them you are going to have a bad day we soon get into the groove of what needs to be done the helicopter brings the balls out into the open we need to hold them until the catcher is ready [Music] [Music] scrubbers take on anything when approached trucks choppers people on horseback or atvs it's all game for the scrub bull this area of cape york is home to some of the best organic beef in australia and it's all due to its high ash feed which keeps these cattle helpful [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] this is better than fishing this is way better than fishing oh it's all time man that was it yeah just got a couple here going to try and bring them past back fast down on this flat country running a little bit of running around here so pretty thick scrub there and big scrub on this side get them out that way and clear a bit [Music] make your hair stands up when one of these guys lines you up this guy gave me a major hurry up and moments later he peels off in front of the bull catcher and the side by side gets center punched lucky he hits the door and does not make it through the window that would have been all bad so we've got this black one who's giving us grief so i'm holding him out into the open and he has just turned around and lined me up and just smoked us in the buggy so here is where uh simon's little bit of carnage got a bull come straight in there that's where he's horn punched a hole into the door there it's a big hit mate yeah his head in the center of his head yeah right the door pillow i think i think he was lining me up that's what it was [Music] he was lying something up he was lining me up that horn has smashed right in there right i'm pretty happy you put doors on the buggy mate yeah i'm really pumped about that oh you you don't want that you don't want that um clean skin coming in there man dangerous sport this one it's fun but it's fun but this is all in a day's work for clint donnery's wife turns up with some lunch for the team you're the food truck eh yeah that's the guy so you just come in behind and i just poke around with the kitties yeah yeah yeah i got you got a bit too involved once what happened here there's a big hole in the side of your truck yes that's when the food truck decided to get in on the act and and put a hole in the door is that a bull horn wow that's a bit close for action yes nothing nothing worth it so you can imagine that's why they cut the tips off the off the balls because they just it's just it's like a dangerous weapon so cutting those little tips off the end doesn't hurt the ball um i remember as a kid out on the farm that's what we used to do we used to de-horn them it's been a hardcore morning and the afternoon shift is still to come wonderful episodes of all for adventure
