a lot changes when you transition from being a pilot on reserve to one holding a line for the first time a study schedule with more days off more flying increased pay and enhanced commute ability are some of the biggest benefits vo experienced as a new line holder so that's what I'll detail in this video and describe what my first month as a line holder has looked like so far [Music] it took me seven months gained enough seniority to hold my first line in Chicago at envoy the timing for the transition to line holding status from being a reserve pilot varies a lot between different airlines aircraft types and base assignments and it changes by the month here's what my last month of reserve looked like in comparison to my first month as a line holder as you can see there's a lot more consistency with trip assignments and more days off as a line holder which is what I'll go ahead and detail in this video one of the best parts about being a line holder is that we have the ability to trade some of our signed trip sequences around throughout the month it's all based on what's available in the system and you usually don't get exactly what you need but you can get pretty close so for instance for this month there were a few days off that I needed for various events and I tried to trade some of my trip sequences around to match those days off I didn't get exactly what I needed but I did get the majority of those days off which was awesome this is what my final schedule for the month looked like after I traded trips and I picked up a three-day OT trip on the second week of the month to increase my overall flight hours and pay [Music] as you can see I have 15 days off scheduled into my line this month that's going down to 12 days off because I picked up a three-day ot trip but I still get more days off than I had on my last month of Reserve including otm scheduled to fly 86 hours this month covering 13,000 miles between 18 different airports on 13 separate overnights around the country two of the trips that I traded in to have overnights at home so that makes up a little bit by the time off that I lost by picking up extra flying having a consistent schedule throughout the month with routes and times is something that I've really enjoyed versus being on call on reserve three of my trips this month our front end commutable meaning that I can wake up at home commute to Chicago and go to work all in the same day and better yet each of my trips is back in commutable this month meaning that after my last flight finishes I can catch up like the Fargo and spend the night at home this has really increased my quality of life for the month this month I'll spend around 17 nights at home including to Fargo overnights that's in comparison to around 10 nights at home on my last month of reserve and for the nights that I'm not spending at home but I need to be in Chicago the day before my trip I'll use two of my four commuter hotels for the month [Music] you're created it makes your seat in an upright position if you haven't already passed [Music] as a line holder I get a minimum guarantee of 72 paid hours for the month my particular line this month was worth seventy three point five hours and then I picked up a three-day OT trip worth 13 flight hours that's nineteen point five hours of pay and the end up for OTN trading my line for the month was worth ninety three pay hours in addition to the dollar ninety I make per diem per hour I spend away from base during an entire trip another big benefit of being aligned the holder is that you get to know your crew a little bit better as a pilot on reserve you might be swapped in and out of many crews over just a few days and you'll often time to only get called to do a single day trip here there but that's a line holder it's not uncommon to play with the same flight crew for three or four days in a row [Music] [Music] becoming a line holder is a big deal for most new airline pilots it's really improving my life as a commuter I get to fly more my schedule is a little bit more flexible and with more days off I can pick up oats eat just a little bit easier the specifics of how line the holding works varies by airline so that's one of the top things that you should definitely research before deciding who you'd like to fly for one day [Music] [Music]
