What $20 Buys You at a Japanese STREET FOOD Market

it's seven o'clock in the morning and we're at yuriage morning market just outside of sendai we're about to have one hell of a breakfast [Music] [Applause] [Music] ah the smell of barbecues grilling the fresh sea air breeze and the bustle of the morning crowds keeping you on your toes you just can't beat a good old japanese morning market particularly the ones in the coastline such as this yuriyaki morning market 30 minutes outside of sendai and today we've come here to grab some breakfast as we wander through the market stalls and see what we can buy on a budget of 2 000 yen about 20 but how far will it go well joining us to find out and destroy my breakfast is a veteran of the market and without a doubt the world's worst chef it is of course ryotaro and here he is with my 2 000 yen good morning everyone yeah here's your 2 000 it is my 2000 and let's see what we can get with this 2000. 2000 yen about 20 what can you get in a japanese morning market quite a lot i guess when it comes to morning market in japan you can buy pretty much anything this market we're right on the pacific coastline right now and it was destroyed by the tsunami right in 2011. yes it was once but it got renewed and reopened a few years after and since then actually it's becoming more and more more popular oh it's certainly pretty damn busy this morning and so for ryotaro this is your kind of local market i guess right it is the closest morning market to sendai city yep yeah i've never actually been here though somehow i couldn't believe that you just said that i guess it's because it's like a train ride away and i'm just too lazy now we have a car i do have a car yeah and i've got 2000 yen so let's go and see what we can do with it what you can get and what i can get and he's gonna get some [ __ ] come on get some good come on our first stop of the morning is the most popular stand in the entire market and ryotaro's favorite sri gyoza boiled gyoza filled with juicy pork and shrimp and topped with kimchi so now i've got two thousand yen in front of me and this is my first dish i'm going to buy and this costs 500 yen i have 2 000. out of 2 000 quite a lot of money this is really the worst that's why people are killing because it's worth it are you worth it i'm totally worth it one of the greatest challenges is covering the juicy gyoza in as much of the free kimchi as you can carry look at that technique so with a kimchi like a jenga so the plain jenga you need to be very tactful to be able to pick the dumpling loving the sound effects oh wow the juice coming out of the dumpling just the pork shrimp i feel everything you feel everything i feel everything that's what i'm saying well ryotaro has kicked off his breakfast with a savory dish for my first dish something sweet and covered with sprinkles has caught my eye there's only one thing i've come to this market for what is it for choco banana gosh i knew that choco banana we came all the way to the morning market and this is the first thing that he spent out of those 2000 yen healthy though kick off your day with a banana you get all your vitamin b 12 your zinc your copper nylon it is good what they've done is they get a banana they put it in chocolate cover it in sprinkles it's pretty complex but the flavors are just so rich nine out of ten best 250 yen you could possibly spend the perfect start to your day choco banana i don't think so so right next to the choco banana stand is the second best stand in the market fried chicken chicken carriage what do you reckon you started off fruits like choco banana right and now we are creating for the fried chicken right yeah and i think we are here for grilling fish and shrimps and all the good stuff shrimp or fried chicken what's better i think we all know the answer to that they've got all sorts of flavors this fried chicken they've got like fried chicken with burdock uh they've got like korean style spicy uh fried chicken they've got like a salt flavor and they've got miso flavor and garlic seaweed flavor and that's what i'm going to order oh it smells so good so much garlic garlic oil chicken perfect first chocolate banana second karaoke chicken you're the bag it's been sprinkled with seaweed and garlic and garlic go on them you can have the first taste because i'm nice is it good very good it's got a nice garlic taste to it right it does good parang fried chicken is nice and juicy in the middle with this one it's juicy it's got a nice garlic undertone to it do you feel the seaweed though i do feel the seaweed do i feel the seaweed exactly so out of the scale of one to ten what would you give this one for i'll give it an h because it's very flavourful it's very juicy but the batter is not that crispy because they've marinated it in lots of garlic i think um i like how i'll get the kind of breaks apart it's crispy explodes so i'll give it a nice you get lower score than banana or a sick banana chocolate what have i become so you can see all these people here doing barbecues fresh seafood they've just bought a lot of these japanese morning markets you can actually get your own grill for free you go and buy everything you want to eat bring it back to your grill and barbecue away only downside for us today of course is that ryotaro is our chef so if you come to somewhere like this make sure you bring somebody who's good so we are now looking for fish that we should be able to grill this is what we're going to get [Music] it's i don't know what it is but it doesn't look overly good tuna gill gill scenic gill so this is the first thing i'm going to grill over the stove [Music] to accompany his somewhat grizzly tuna gill ryotaro decides to snap up a barbecue set for a thousand yen a ready-made selection of fish and meat of scallops sausages shrimp basically just anything that starts with a letter eggs that's it i've spent two thousand a year and this is what i've got can you it's quite a lot for 20 dollars i guess with the dumpling uh and all that and what have you got fried chicken chicken and banana [Music] [Music] what a [ __ ] show this is good valley for money though how much was this the fish uh well this fish is a big one 500 yen and all of this one thousand five hundred yeah one thousand five hundred yen for a good decent barbecue just make sure if you do spend that money on this nice decadent platter of fish they'd have the world's worst chef cooking it that is blacker than the chocolate banana that i saw earlier look at that how hard can it be to cook with sausage again it's called a well done that's what it is with eleven hundred yen left of my budget while wandering around the market we spot an absolute bargain a delicious assortment of dishes inspired by the cuisine of kyushu and okinawa good god it's over a thousand yen you get three bowls different types of dishes it's always too much though i've already eaten ryotaro's dodgy barbecue i'm feeling rather full but you want to get all three you gonna help you're gonna help me eat it yeah all right how much have you got right now a thousand yen stands on 100 yen but will i have enough money left over for another chocolate banana i don't think so 250 and you've got 100 yen left how are we going to carry all this back through three different bowls the real challenge walking through this bustling market with a tray of three bowls but a video game so what do we got really so uh well done for carrying the tray through the market that was a spectacular one to itself it's like a mario like a mario like a mario okay here we go okay so we've got like okinawa okinawa soup noodle uh with um the sperry pork the okinawa noodle is a the broth is based on the bonito and it's a clear soup bonito fish bonito fish yeah yeah it's a clear soup that's what's the the the difference between the others and this one i think that looks the best although this beef here looks pretty spectacular yeah and this is a beet bowl beef bowl yeah mounted it with like onions in the soy sauce and kind of kind of be sweet and the last one last one is um this might be something that you might not find intestine interesting intestine of beef well that's for you that one how long are the other two very umami flavor how would you describe umami i you know what i think of all the videos we've made we've never described what umami is and it's another scent they've like another taste isn't it all the taste buds yeah japanese what is it it's um amino acid they call it amino acid yeah explain it in a way that's good realtor it's got that kind of moorish savory salty flavour we have a bite of something and you feel like you want more addiction i think we're both too tired it's too early to describe what umami flavor is so i've put a description here below somewhere and that will uh vindicate me with my crap description finishing my soup i'm gonna dig into the beef bowl give it here you've already you've already burnt off my breakfast i'm going to eat the dish that's good what'd you give the dishes then one to ten i would give this uh a nine actually this is one of the best i've had in a long time same score as banana chocolate i'm gonna have to revise my chocolate banana score i'm gonna give that a six because i feel like it's it's it's misshapen it's distorted all the other reviews today and ryotaro is gonna hold it against me so i'm revising my score to a six for the chocolate okay so this is annoying okay now and that i'll give it an a okay it's really good but this is just more addictive umami flavor when you're using mommy forever you think that you're just you know giving the right like judge what does that mean what does that mean [Music] i'm gonna get absolutely torn apart in the comments from people going you went to a japanese morning market and had a chocolate banana it is as much as part of japanese cuisine as sushi chocolate bananas traditional japanese cuisine so you're you're having like a sushi here and chocolate banana here is that what you're doing it's japanese no now this strawberry milk is very much not for peasants because it's extremely expensive how much was it 700 yen 700 yen for this strawberry milk but it's made from strawberries that cost about 20 dollars per strawberry from the nearby ichigo strawberry world which is a couple of kilometers that way which we actually featured in an episode on japan back in february uh about japan's 200 billion disaster but in that video we met people who had recovered from the tsunami and heard their stories and ichigo world's fascinating place the farms in that region just south of here were completely destroyed but they started a strawberry farm that went on to produce uh the most luxurious strawberries in all of japan which i now export throughout the country outside the country really popular yeah um so it might be 700 yen but it's money well spent yeah it really is amazing but for now guys many
