thank you for meeting your people where they are at this moment thank you for blessing our worship and our praise and our prayers and god we ask now that you will bless your word speak to us so that we'll know what to do in a time such as this and we'll be mindful to give your name all the glory but the words of my mouth for the meditations of our hearts let them be acceptable in our sight god you are strengthened our redeemer it is in jesus name that we pray amen amen amen there's a word from the lord found in the book of mark the new testament gospel mark chapter 1 and i will begin reading at verse number 29 and i'll be reading from the new revive standard version of mark chapter 1. we'll begin reading at verse 29 we'll conclude reading at verse number 34. we're in the midst of a series that we are entitling we the church where we're basically just looking at the ministerial blueprint of jesus that jesus left for us and we see that the church is more than just a building where we meet to worship god but we are the body what we ought to move in an attempt to make an impact on people's lives and our family community city and around the world and so we will continue this thought we the church by looking at mark chapter one i'm gonna begin reading at verse number 29 read it from the new revive standard version and it says as soon as they jesus and his disciples left the synagogue they entered the house of simon and andrew with james and john now simon's mother-in-law was in bed with a fever and they told him about her at once he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up then the fever left her and she began to serve them that evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons and the whole city was gathered around the door and he cured many who were sick with various diseases and cast out many demons and he would not permit the demons to speak because they knew him let's read let's read verse 30 again it says now simon's mother-in-law was in the bed with a fever and they told jesus about her at once he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up then the fever left her and she began to serve them i want to speak from the subject bedside baptist church bedside baptist church just a few days ago i'm on the front porch hanging out with my two-year-old son jeffrey allen johnson iii j3 and randomly third looks up and says what's that and unbeknownst to me there was music that was playing in the background it seems so far away and i wasn't even paying attention to it and it was almost like he was rushing me to give him an answer when he asked again daddy what's that and sure enough it was the ice cream truck that had turned the corner down our street with the kids in the neighborhood trailing behind and his 12 year old brother runs out of the house and says i'm going to the ice cream truck and naturally j3 wants to follow his big brother to the ice cream truck and it seemed like the entire neighborhood had gathered around this truck that was meeting a need in the neighborhood it was almost like all of us gathered around this ice cream truck to get our needs met and as i'm waiting on our turn to make our selection the question popped into my mind who invented the ice cream truck i want to know who was so innovative enough to not wait on customers to come to the store but to take the ice cream to the customer and so in my deep google search i discovered that a man named harry burke out in youngstown ohio is recorded as the one who in 1920 in the early 1920s after he had built up his brand the good humor ice cream brand decided to buy 12 refrigerator trucks and to saturate the city of youngstown ohio to not wait on people to come to him to get ice cream but to take the ice cream to the people and it was during this time in the early 1920s where not only ice cream trucks were populating the city of youngstown ohio but it was during this same time in the midst of the great migration where negroes from the south were making their way up north and populating cities like indianapolis and detroit and chicago and new york and it was also during this time as black people were moving from the rural areas of our nation and populating the urban towns or they were getting jobs where they had a little bit more money to spend so they were out shopping for what was known as the phonograph machine it was the height of the phonograph machine and these record labels went from not allowing black folks to record in their studios to when black folks started buying these phonograph machines they started hiring musicians and comedians to come and record in their studios to provide for their black customer their growing black population and it was in this time where churches would begin to demonize not just the phonograph but the shift where black folks were moving out of the church and exploring other areas of society and culture they were by these photographs and instead of showing up to the church they were at the house enjoying themselves or they would go to different restaurants and bars and enjoy the new music and the rise of black culture and there were some black pastors and churches that would demonize this shift in the culture and there's a book out about this very phenomenon called preaching on wax by laurent martin where he talks about this shift from uh where the church was the center of the black community and this was the beginning where the black church was no longer the center of what was going on in the community and naturally there were black leaders and pastors that would demonize it but dr martin talks about a preacher by the name of reverend j m gates during the time in which that ice cream truck was traveling through neighborhoods jm gates was recording his sermons on wax he would go to the studios and record his sermons and these record labels would then promote and to sail his sermons to believers to those who were not believers to those who believed in jesus to those who were looking for a relationship with jesus and literally in the 1920s people were having church at home reverend j m gates understood that this is not something to be demonized this is something that i can use as an approach to my ministry this is a perfect opportunity to meet the people where they are it was almost like reverend j m gates wanted to create a type of ministry on demand where if people didn't want to wait until sunday morning all they had to do was grab his record off the shelf and get a word from the lord right there at home it was almost like reverend j.m gates in the spirit of the ice cream truck decided to have a mobile ministry where i'm not waiting until people come to me but at some point we got to go to make an impact where people are before the ice cream truck before reverend jm gates there was jesus christ and in the gospel of mark mark talks about jesus as having a ministry that was mobile where he was not just in the synagogue but he was out in the streets where he was not just in the temple but he was at the table with sinners where he was not just challenging the religious institution but he went to go search for sinners out in the community because jesus had a mobile ministry mark highlights this more than any other gospel writer because in the gospel of mark you'll read throughout the entire narrative the term immediately the term immediately is written more than 40 times in the book of mark and in fact in chapter one the chapter that i read to you today is mentioned no less than four times because mark is trying to help us to understand the sense of urgency that jesus had when it came to advancing the kingdom of god where jesus says that i can't wait here in the synagogue i gotta go out to meet the people where they are and jesus had a mobile ministry and jesus really is really helping us when it comes to how we ought to approach ministry at a time such as this where our ministry got to be mobile our ministry has to be uh accessible to all of those regardless of what time of day it is regardless of where they are we gotta be the body of jesus where we are not just hanging out in the building but we're going to meet the people where they are and this is where we picked up the narrative here in mark chapter 1. the bible says in verse 29 that that jesus uh is walking with james and john and they are leaving the synagogue they're not walking into the synagogue the text says that they are leaving the synagogue and they're going to peter's house now before we begin to explore what was going on at peter's house i want to take some time to lay this out in context and discuss what was going on in the synagogue that they just left from because what was going on in the synagogue that they just left from wasn't a normal synagogue experience when you go back a little bit and read when you scroll back up in the text and you read beginning at verse number 21 the bible says that jesus is starting his ministry and he has already selected two sets of brothers he's got he's got peter and andrew that's one set of brothers then he's got another set of brothers james or john he selected these brothers and now these brothers are traveling throughout the city and they go to a synagogue now the synagogue was the place where the jewish people would hear the rabbi or anybody in the community mainly a man come and to teach about the law and to teach about the tradition and to teach about the religion and to teach about god so now jesus enters into the synagogue and he begins his teaching and the bible says that the people were amazed at this teaching because he is teaching with authority he's not teaching with the power like the the pharisees and the religious leaders who was given power but he is teaching with the authority that comes from god as god he is teaching with authority and as jesus is teaching and preaching with authority the bible says that there was an interruption in the church service this is a synagogue jesus is in the center of all that's going on this is the place where jesus is exalted and the word is explained and there is an interruption in the worship service you got to go and read you got to go and read the narrative and you'll discover that the interruption in the service the bible says that there was a man that was possessed with an unclean spirit okay i'm trying to paint the picture a little bit they go into the worship building and in the building in the midst of jesus preaching was a man that was possessed with an unclean spirit now when you read the book of mark you'll discover that mark had a concern with people who are possessed with unclean spirits it was almost like mark equated the preaching of the gospel with not just the advancing of the kingdom but the casting out of demons all through mark chapter 1 you'll see different you'll see different scenarios of jesus engaging with unclean spirits after he got baptized he's in the wilderness and he's met with satan an unclean spirit that tries to tempt him in the midst of this in the midst of the synagogue he's met with yet another man who's possessed with an evil spirit by the time we get done with the pericope i read to you you'll see that the neighborhoods gathered all those who was possessed with an unclean spirit and brought them to jesus and every now and again jesus encountered those who were possessed with unclean spirits in mark chapter 5 he saw another man in the tombs that was met with an unclean spirit mark and jesus is trying to get us to understand that every now and again in our walk of faith in our walk of life we will encounter some unclean spirits yes we will encounter unclean spirits in schools and in our homes and in the community we will even encounter unclean spirits in the tombs and in the marketplace but here in mark chapter 1 there was an unclean spirit who made their way to the house of god and i want us to be aware of unclean spirits who frequent the church because what we have to remember is that the church ain't the building it's the people and people are flawed and people are filled with sin and people every now and again we'll fall short of the glory of god and if we're not careful as the body as the people we will open ourselves up to unclean spirits even in the house of god and i love what jesus does as you read that story the bible makes it clear that before jesus can address the unclean spirit jesus had to acknowledge the unclean spirit because we frequent the church all the time and we we don't be surprised when an unclean spirit shows up on the usher board or when the unclean spirit shows up in the choir stand or when the unclean spirit shows up in the pulpit or when the unclean spirit shows up in the classroom we can't be surprised but at some point we have to acknowledge that the unclean spirit is real i love what jesus did he doesn't he doesn't ignore the unclean spirit but he acknowledges that it's real in order to address it because you can't address it if you don't acknowledge it and at some point as the body of christ we need to acknowledge the unclean spirits that frequent our churches and our communities and our families because you're not going to address that what's going on in your life until you acknowledge the fact that it's an unclean spirit in the temple in the synagogue in the church and here it is i love what the bible says that this was no normal synagogue experience it was interrupted by an unclean spirit but jesus acknowledges it then he addresses it and the bible says that they left the synagogue with jesus huh this i love it they've experienced an unclean spirit in the building but the bible says in verse 29 that james and john left the synagogue with jesus they encountered something evil in the building but still left with jesus because all of us know at least one somebody who experienced an unclean spirit in the building and left jesus behind turn their back on the faith turn their back on christianity turn their back on the church turn their back on scriptures turn their back on jesus because of some unclean spirit that they experience some church hurt some molestation some abuse some some bullying they left the building because of an unclean spirit but didn't take jesus with them but you and i know that when we are growing in our faith we won't allow the unclean spirits that frequent our church to keep us from jesus because every now and again we gotta grow in our faith that even when we experience pain we still gotta walk with jesus i love it they leave the building with jesus and many of us we've experienced a divorce but we kept walking with jesus we've experienced a breakup but we kept walking with jesus we experienced some sickness but kept walking with jesus we experienced unemployment but kept walking we experienced death but kept walking we experienced a shortcoming is there anybody understands that even when you experience an unclean spirit keep taking jesus with you and the bible says they kept walking with jesus i love it and as they are walking with jesus they leave the synagogue and they go to peter's house they go to peter's house they take a stop at peter's house and and when they get to to peter's house uh jesus begins to learn about peter's mother-in-law and she has a sickness and and she has a fever and so she is lying in the bed and and she is sick they they leave the synagogue and and and in the spirit of reverend james gates and the ice cream truck that they begin to travel around the community and they end up at peter's mother that peter's house to deal with peter's mother-in-law and and and we we should pause here because it really helps us to understand uh peter's priorities that see jesus had just selected peter as one of his disciples he had just drafted him to be on his team come follow me and we're gonna make we're gonna we're gonna make you fishers fishermen of men and peter says before i can begin fishing for men and women i i got a sickness at the home but before i can help change the world with you jesus i need for you to come and see about my mother-in-law she's not feeling well she is sick and before i can start trying to change the world i need you to first come and change my home and peter says i got a mother-in-law who's sick so so so in essence this speaks of the fact that peter had a wife peter had a wife and and some scholars suggest that peter's wife was on fire for god just like peter that that peter's wife was a martyr of the faith that that she was killed by the roman empire and and the story goes that that peter was smiling and happy and proud as his wife was walking to her execution all because of the faith that she had in jesus and that's why paul says can we not have our wives travel with us when we do ministry because peter's wife was there as he was traveling spreading the gospel she had her own part in the spreading of the gospel and it may be because that jesus showed up to her house to heal her mother-in-law because because there was a sickness in the house there was a disease in the house there was somebody in peter's family who was sick with the illness and peter went to jesus on his family members behalf and if i had time to pause right there i can just stop right there and thank god that some of us have a peter mother-in-law kind of testimony that we found our healing not because of our prayer life but because we had somebody in our family who went to jesus it was almost like when lot was rescued out of sodom and gomorrah that when all of that destruction fell on his city and sodom and lot and his family made it out of sodom and gomorrah it wasn't because a lot had it all together matter of fact lot was trying to sacrifice his own daughter but it was in the chapter before where his uncle abraham went to god on lot's behalf and begged for lot's life and lot made it with a testimony because he had a family member who went to jesus on his behalf can we pause right here and thank god for all the mamas and the granddad and the granddaddies and the grand mamas who went to god on our behalf and now we have a relationship with god because there was a peter in our life and some of us have to graduate from peter's mother-in-law to peter that that because somebody went to god on your behalf it's now time for you to go to god on somebody else's behalf because let's keep it real all of us got somebody sick in our family all of us got somebody sick at the crib all of us got some type of illness that needs to be addressed and before we can go out trying to save everybody else why don't you just start at the crib why don't you just start at home and peter says i got i got a mother-in-law who is sick she couldn't get to the building she couldn't get to worship she she couldn't get to the in-person fellowship she's sick she couldn't get in her car and drive all the way down there and park and walk to the building she's sick she she couldn't she didn't have the energy to put on her church clothes and to make her way to the building she is sick peter peter says jesus i know we just left church but i got somebody that i know who needed jesus but couldn't get to the building and i thank god that we have a savior who will not just cast out demons in public but will come and see about a sickness in private peter said jesus come see about my mother-in-law who couldn't get to the building but still need jesus because every now and again we will encounter a sickness that can't wait for the building to open back up every now and again we will encounter a situation in our life where we can't wait until they open up the doors of the church every now and again something will go down in our life where we can wait until 10 30 before the service start now we need jesus right now and i'm so glad that jesus has a mobile ministry i'm so glad that we ain't got to come into the building to experience his power i'm so glad that i don't need to wait on a pastor before i get my healing because every now and then again jesus will make house calls to come and see about your soul and the bible says they left the synagogue went to the building went into the house and here is his mother-in-law who experience healing at bedside baptist church i love it because bedside baptist church typically has a negative connotation to it i mean before streaming was so big whenever your friend or your family member skipped out on church you would tell everybody oh they had bad child baptists it represents them being lazy or it represents them not wanting to go to church that if they skipped out on fellowship they didn't want to they didn't want to get they don't want to go through all uh all they needed to go through the routine the weekly routine to get to the building so they just stayed at home bedside baptist church but now due to the advancement of technology and due to a whole pandemic this bedside baptist church has a new meaning to it uh because over these past 18 months some of us are where we are in our faith because of bedtime baptists we ain't we we've grown deeper in our faith we've grown deeper in our prayer life we've gone deeper in our fasting we've gone deeper in our spiritual journey all because of the fact that we didn't have to wait on the building but jesus came to where we are because eric now went again just like peter's mother-in-law was sick let's keep it real sometimes you and i are sick we sick of the religious patterns we're sick of the tradition we're sick of the same old order of worship we're sick of the same old sermons we sick of the same old lessons we sick of the same old straight we sick of the same old same mold and like that that that that prophet that young prophet that we referenced last week some of us are just tired of this church we're tired of the church but we still want some jesus and i i know how you're looking right now behind your mask and behind your digital screen but if we can be real sometimes we're just tired of religion it doesn't mean that we don't want the relationship we just tired of the religion it's the same thing that god was speaking about in the old testament where he would go to the children of god and say i'm tired of y'all festivals i'm tired of y'all sacrifices i'm tired of all the songs and the sermons that preach in you'll come to church and worship me on sunday and then all throughout the week you're giving your energy and your attention to your idols god said i'm sick and tired of it i'm tired of the religion but i'm looking for some people who can engage in a relationship with me and we as the body of christ we can't be judgmental on the reason why people don't want to come to the building but you and i as the body must follow the example of jesus and not be concerned with the reason but still give them an opportunity to be exposed to the grace and the transformative power of jesus christ and you and i can leave the four walls and to make this ministry mobile by pulling up to bedside baptists because the bible declares that nothing can separate us from the love of god nothing can separate you from the grace and the power of jesus christ nothing can separate you not an iphone not a tablet not a tv screen not a laptop nothing can separate you not a podcast app not a video on youtube nothing can separate you from the love of god i don't care where you are right now but when you tap into god by faith god has a way of meeting you where you are whosoever shall call on the name of the lord shall be saved even at bedside baptists and i love it because as jesus heals this woman the bible says that she got up and started serving people i love it uh jesus is not one that is just waiting on the crowd to perform his miracles but he even does it personally and intimately i'm always turned off by those singers and preachers and teachers who are awaiting the great crowd but but pay no mind to the intimate relationship that they can have and the change that they can make in people's lives and here is jesus who goes to bedside baptist get in touch with this woman the woman wakes up she gets up out of her bad sickness and the bible says that she began to serve her home that was her way of saying thank you to jesus by serving at home that was her worship by serving at home that was her way of showing a grateful heart by serving at home because the the bible makes it clear that our home is our priority that before you start giving all of your time and energy to the building where we worship you ought to be giving your time and energy to your home okay um uh that man who was possessed with an evil spirit in the tombs and uh jesus took him he was naked in the cemetery running around couldn't sit down jesus transformed his life now we're sitting at the feet of jesus and the man said jesus can i go with you because the city was begging jesus to leave the man said i don't want to be a part of no of no community that don't want to have nothing to do with jesus jesus can i go with you and jesus says no you can't go with me he told him go home okay um uh who was it oh lazarus who was it he was dead jesus shows up to the funeral days late and and and his sister said hey bro had you been here my brother wouldn't have died jesus says i am the life and the resurrection raises lazarus from the dead in john chapter 11. the very next chapter they are throwing a dinner party for jesus at home and mary and martha and lazarus begins to serve jesus not in the community not at the synagogue not at the temple but they did it oh y'all got it now at home because every now and again god will challenge us that same energy you got at the church take it home that same energy you got trying to serve your pastor serve your spouse at home that same energy that you trying to mentor your kids at the church do the same thing at home every now and again god will challenge his believers to make the impact not just at the building but at home because if this pandemic has done anything it has given us an opportunity to transform our living room to a sanctuary transform our bedrooms to a classroom transform our kitchen into a place where we can tap into the power of god and every now and again we gotta do it at home go back to your community go back to your family go back to your children go back to your spouse and serve god and i hear what you're saying pastor jay my home is messed up there's some dysfunction at my home there's a illness at my home there's a sickness at my home it may not be physical but it's a spiritual emotional mental sickness that is taking place at my home but there's a testimony in the old testament from a prostitute named rahab who used her home as a brothel she was a sex worker but one evening there was some other kind of brothers that showed up to her house and she decided to transform her brothel into a safe haven that not only was able to rescue the israelites but rescue her family in the time of warfare and i don't know about you but we're in the midst of spiritual warfare as we speak there was warfare unclean spirits at the white house unclean spirits in the church house unclean spirits at the schoolhouse we are in the midst of a spiritual warfare and the best thing you can do in midst of spiritual warfare is to take care of your house because god is able to transform your home in a place where people can get tapped in to the power of god god can transform your family into a place where people fall on their face and experience the forgiving power of jesus is almost like when the children of israel was in warfare in egypt and the bible says they went back home and they killed the fatty calf and put the blood of the lamb over their doorposts so even when the warfare was taken out everybody around them their family was protected because they took the measures of taking care of their home i don't know who i'm talking to today but god says i know you at bad side baptist but i dare you to take that oil and put it around your home while focused sleep just spray it on your family while they chilling out just make sure that you spread the spirit of god all over your house because god is able to transform your home into a place where people can get saved is there anybody grateful that jesus would not just meet you at his house but jesus will show up to your house and this is what we need to do as the body of christ we the church we not we we're not just waiting for for us to open up to everybody but this is an opportunity for us to do mobile ministry yeah yeah what what what does church look like in mobile ministry what does the podcast look like from a spiritual perspective what is a vlog that documents the church's day by day activities what what does it look like for the church to be mobile i i'm reminded of of the ceo of netflix he put out this book not too long ago uh where he talks about his experience with netflix um netflix started off as a startup company and and in this book where he talks about the idea of netflix and the title was it would never work and that's what they would hear in the startup company it would never work your idea of meeting people at the home would never work and he talks about the birth of netflix and when netflix was only three years old they took this young idea to the headquarters of blockbuster and they were able to sit down in front of the the leaders of blockbuster blockbuster at the time was the place to rent all of our vhs's y'all remember what a vhs is you had to have a vhs player in order to rent and to watch a vhs tape and blockbuster was all over the country thousands of stores nationwide and so netflix here is netflix a young idea they show up to the headquarters of blockbuster and say here's our idea where in the birth of this internet and the launch of the internet we're trying to get movies into people's homes we want to stream movies their favorite movies in their homes well we don't they don't have to go to the theater they don't even have to show up to blockbuster but they can tap into blockbuster at home and that the author of that book says that when he was looking at the body language of the leaders who were frozen in their money and the success that they had at that time it said it was almost like they were trying to hold back a laugh it was almost like they left them out of the office and they rejected the opportunity to invest in the future of not just allowing customers to come to them but going to meet the customers where they are and now netflix a multi-billion dollar business in the midst of a multi-bill if not trillion dollar industry where streaming services all over the world are tapping into the idea where we can go and to meet a need for people when they don't have to come to us they don't have to get in their cars they don't have to drive they don't have to walk the aisles to find what they need they can just stay at home and in the comfort of their home they can tap in to what we are trying to provide and i want to provide or i guess lift up a question for us today as we conclude our time together as we move forward as the body of christ because we the church are we willing to be a netflix or a blockbuster because as of a few years ago there's only one blockbuster left but there's tons of streaming services because they didn't they didn't let go of this of the main idea we still want people to watch movies and we still want people to enjoy themselves but let's change the way and how we do it we want we want our peace to be mobile we want to meet people where they are and this is what jesus is trying to get for us to understand as the body of christ that there are some sicknesses and illness that can't wait for the building to open and we can't judge folk on why they don't want to come they may be sick and they body or they may just be tired of this church but at some point we got to create an opportunity for people not to experience a religious moment but to tap into a relationship with god let's go to god in prayer we love you we're grateful we praise your name thank you for the power of your word thank you for the power of the church the scriptures teach us that when jesus died on the cross that curtain that separated the people from the power of god was torn down and so now we can experience the saving power of god wherever we are because of the sacrifice of jesus so god i pray that you will forgive us forgive the church when we were stagnant in old successes but we didn't want to invest in the future where we didn't want to go meet people where they are because they should be coming to where we are but god i pray that we will become what jesus was to his community a ministry that is mobile a ministry that is not just waiting for the crowds to come but can can offer an intimate experience even in the private moments of their homes god i pray for those who are tuning in online right now wherever they are whatever device they're using i pray that they can tap in by faith and you can help them transform their home of dysfunction their home of depression their home of anxiety their home of arguments and division and i pray god that you can transform into a place of peace a place of comfort a place a refuge where they can experience the power of jesus christ and for those who are tuned in who don't know who you are don't know how the relationship don't have a connection with the church i pray that you will pull up to bedside baptist right now that they can experience your saving power in the name of jesus we pray amen amen there may be somebody that's tuned in right now and you need a relationship with jesus you you need to get connected to his church not the building but the body the place where you can grow and develop as a child of god a place a safe haven a camp a tribe where you can tap into faith and grow in your encouragement we want to take a moment right now to allow that word to sink into your heart so that god can speak to you even as the choir sings we want to allow you to allow the spirit of god to meet you at bedside baptist where your life can be changed your home can be transformed and you can walk into destiny despite of your past so you can email us right now even as the choir scene and we got some people waiting on you to tap into your faith right now [Music] whatever you're going through whatever you're up against whatever your home look like god has a way of showing up and giving you the strength to get up and serve jesus hallelujah [Music] so if you need jesus right now go ahead and email us and before you email us even as you email us i want to say this prayer along with you and by the end of this prayer it will be no question that you are saved i heard a preacher say one time as easy as abc's just admit that you need god believe that jesus died on the cross and that god raised her from the dead confess the hope in christ and you are saved say this prayer with me say father i come right now i know that i've sinned i am sorry for my sin i believe that jesus died on the cross and i believe that god raised jesus from the dead i receive the spirit by faith for forgiveness of sin in jesus name we pray amen listen if you say that prayer for the first time or the 10th time we praise god with you we celebrate god with you we praise god that you didn't have to come to the building to experience his salvation go ahead and email us right now we got some people that are waiting on you to tap into your faith tap into your faith community and we know that god can change you amen amen amen our family it's time for the
