commemorate family fellowship and faith we're excited in this fall season to reconnect with you and hope that you will reconnect with us in all the ways defined in our opening slides as usual we are happy to announce there is a word from the lord so travel with me now to the scriptural territory of psalm 122 and i'd like to read in your hearing verses 1 and the first part of verse 2 this is the word of the lord i was glad when they said to me let us go to the house of the lord and now here we are and i want to tag this text with a title lifted right out of the text itself and talk to you for a few moments from the subject i was glad today is a historic day for us for never before have we been privy in our lifetime to a global pandemic that impacted people on all seven continents never before in our lifetime have we seen people die so massively and quickly from a contagious virus like this one never before in our history have we locked the doors of our church buildings and told people to stay home not one sunday or two but for 78 sundays stay home for 540 days never before in 111 years of ministry have we had to depend on cameras crew internet and social media to help us keep the gospel going forth and the faithful encouraged and strong never before has our vocabulary been interrupted and expanded by the insertion of terms like sequester zoom community spread quarantine variant social distancing viral load and efficacy never before have so many iconic brands gone bankrupt and retail merchants shuttered their stores and gone completely out of business think about it for a moment brooks brothers no more neiman marcus no more chuck e cheese no more guitar center gnc jc penny lord and taylor all gone never before have we been confronted with so many crises on so many different front fronts at the same time covet 19 isolated a social unrest disturbed us racial injustice angered us economic inequity threatened us climate change imperils us and political divisiveness polarizes us never before have we been apart physically every weekend for 18 months and yet god in grace has permitted us on this day to reassemble physically and virtually today we open a new chapter in a new book in a new place on a new level on a new day we join our voices in harmony with the songwriter of scripture survey our situation and shout out loud i was glad when they said to me let us go into the house of the lord and now here we are to testify to the goodness of god the grace of god and the generosity of god here we are announcing that trouble don't last always that light is stronger than night that joy does come in the morning and that god is yet in control here we are looking over our shoulders turning our heads clean around and surveying our situation to see where we are and remember where we've come from and what we have come through here we are standing in defiance and the light defiance in the face of disease death despair disappointment delay denial and discouragement and delight because we can celebrate our hope appropriate our destiny and stake claim on our future here we are to claim in tones bright and clear that god is still alive god is still on the throne and god still holds the entire world in god's hand and forgive me if you will but my primary premise in this proclamation is to argue that if you're going to be a part of a celebration like this you should be prepared for the party i need 325 of you both in here and online who feel like it's your first day of school you've got your clothes ready you've been thinking about today you got both your shots i want you to give god glory right where you are if you're glad hold on cause some of you are looking at me and staring at the screen like i'm gonna get taller and i'm not i need some people now who are just glad glad to be alive glad to have the activity of your limbs glad that you have survived thus far glad that you have learned how to thrive glad that you are learning to lean on the lord glad to be in the service one more time i'm searching for a thousand people right now physical or virtual who have been through some ups and downs starts and stops leaps forward and steps back and yet god has kept you god has blessed you god has protected you god has held you and if i'm talking to you right where you are would you give god a i'm glad praise that's the entire message today i'm glad to be in the service one more time he didn't have to let me live but i'm glad to be in the service one more time that's the point of this pericope that's the subject of this song psalm 122 is a part of a collection of writings called the songs of ascent each beginning with a superscription to helium charlamalot in hebrew these were songs meant to be sung as the faithful processed up to the holy city of jerusalem for corporate worship here they are parading in praise to the temple singing out loud in my distress i cried to the lord and he heard me i will lift up my eyes to the hills from where does my help come my help comes from the lord the maker of heaven and earth he will not suffer your foot to be moved he that keeps you does not slumber nor sleep the lord is your keeper the lord is your shade on your right hand the son will not smite thee by day nor the moon by night the lord will preserve you from all evil he will preserve your soul the lord will preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth and even for evermore singing out loud i love the lord for he heard my cry and pity my every groan singing out loud the lord is my light and my salvation whom shall i fear the lord is the strength of my life of whom shall i be afraid singing out loud the lord has been our dwelling place in all generations before the mountains were brought forth or ever you had formed the earth or the world even from everlasting to everlasting you are god and once in proximity to the place of worship their song would shift and they would begin to sing this one i was glad when they said to me let us go into the house of the lord and now here we are that's how they gathered for worship but how should we on a day like this in a moment like this given all that we have just come through how should we gather for worship physically and virtually that's the question because i contend that how you gather for worship will make a difference in what you gain out of worship did you hear me how should we gather for worship well first my friends i want to suggest that we should consider the privilege of gathering for worship it is a privilege the tailor of this text testified i was glad when they said to me let us go into the house of the lord this singing songwriter rejoiced at the very thought of gathering with the people of god for worship however he had to do it for him gathering was not a burden but a blessing not a duty but a delight not a pain but a privilege his words describe how excited he was i'm excited to be in worship with you today are you excited he says i was glad there are multiple pronouns utilized in this song verse 1 is centered in personal reference and regard i was glad that's personal when they said to me that's personal when i get to worship it's a matter of personal regard i don't care who's watching me i'm not concerned about who's judging me i have a personal relationship with god and my praise is personal i've come too far not to worship him when you see me stand don't sit me down if i cry ain't nothing wrong if i wave my hand you ain't got the way back because i'm not waving at you it's because i know what i know about the goodness and generosity and grace of god i can testify personally about the doors god has opened the ways god has made the battles god has fought the sickness god has healed the bills god has paid the valleys god has exalted the mountains god has moved i don't need a group for this this is a personal reference made out of personal regard i can tell you what god has done for me i can tell you how god has lifted me bless me kept me held me directed he protected me i can tell you how god has dried my tears and calmed my fears and extended my years is there anybody watching and listening who knows that god has been good to you i was glad i shared with you previously that some people wake up in the morning and say good morning lord and other people wake up and say good lord is mourning and whenever the endeavor the adage is true that what you put in determines what you get out let me try to help you see my point the story is told of two men jim and ron who both went to the same church and during worship jim heard the organist miss a note and he winced he saw a team talking during the prayer and he frowned he felt a certain usher was watching what he put in the offering tray and he got upset five times he caught the preacher breaking the laws of grammar and during the invitation as he slipped out the door somebody overheard him saying what a waste of time but ron was in that same service and he heard the organist play an arrangement of our god is awesome and was stirred to worship a special offering was received and he got excited that his church was a church that helped people in need he appreciated the sermon and felt it spoke to a need in his life and as he shook the pastor's hand on the way out he said how can anybody come here and not feel the presence of the lord don't miss it both men were in the same service on the same day each heard the same music and the same message but their experience was totally different what made the difference both found what they were looking for wait wait how they came in determine how they came out his words described in this um how excited he was and how eager he was he didn't have to be cajoled prodded or guilted in the gathering he was eager to do it so he starts with personal reference i was glad but he can't help himself so he has to extend a plural recommendation i was glad when they said to me that's plural let us that's plural go into the house of the lord in other words god has not just been good to me but as i look around god has been good to all of us now we've got to keep our social distance but we can still provide some spiritual affirmation don't touch anybody but look at everybody near you and just nod your head and say out loud just nod your head and say uh he's been good to you he's kept you uh he's made a way for you he's healed you not to head he woke you up to uh huh he blessed you too come on and join the me too movement god healed you too god save you me too god is keeping you alive me too god is blessing you me too you're going to praise the lord me too i will bless him the opportunity to gather for worship whether physically or virtually should be greeted with excitement and eagerness because it's a privilege to worship but also the text teaches us secondly to consider the purpose of gathering for worship why worship for that matter what is worship can i lean in right there i like tim keller's definition he said worship is the act of ascribing ultimate value to something in a way that energizes your entire being that definition reminded me of a story i heard about this woman who for years was struggling financially her family barely surviving until finally in a desperate effort she had to begin to sell off some of her possessions among her possessions was an old jewelry box with a brooch she had inherited from her grandmother she took the brooch to a jeweler to have it appraised you know jewelers have a process for determining the value of stones typically they examine the clarity the cut the color and the carrot weight and upon examining the broach that she had inherited from her grandmother that had been sitting in an old jewelry box the jeweler was so shocked his hands began to tremble because the brooch that she had brought in to be a praise was one of a kind don't miss this it was so valuable it was priceless grab that here she was living in poverty because she didn't understand the value of what she had and therefore could not live on the basis of it come here my friend because you need to grab this as i sagaciously suggest to you today that when you talk about the worship of god you are holding something in your hand that is so valuable it's priceless it's peerless it's precious and your challenge is to live on the basis of it in fact our english word worship derives from the ancient word worth ship which meant to proclaim and give worth to something you consider incomparable and irreplaceable and in this case it is recognizing the worth of a relationship with the true and living god and living accordingly here it is bombshell alert you got to pay attention you are already worshiping something or somebody boom we just blew it up right there come here because see the world is not divided in the people who worship and those who do not because everybody yep you too everybody i mean you sitting right there yep everybody i mean you watching everybody worship something or somebody right now everybody has a sign ultimate worth to something or somebody and right now you are living on the basis of it so the world is divided only into those who worship almighty god the eternal sovereign as the ruler of the universe and those who choose to worship somebody or something of lesser value our ultimate problem and our ultimate possibility lie in who or what we worship whatever controls you is your lord plain and simple so what is the purpose of gathering for worship what is the pretext of our praise i'm glad you asked because when we gather whether physically or virtually we gather to meet the family of god if you're watching virtually go on type in the chat space what's up fam it was good to see you on today gathering for worship was not simply a matter of personal reference as we have stated it was an issue of collective connection its required requisite was other people and somebody can bear witness because if we have missed nothing else across these 18 months we have missed each other i have missed you and i hope you have missed me somebody give me two 321 amens we have missed each other thank god for virtual space thank god for digital connection and possibility we were able to get the content of the word but we long for the comfort of other worshipers have i got any witnesses listen if you will because individual worship as critical as it is is not and never will be a replacement for corporate worship individual worship is a prerequisite for corporate worship say it differently pastor i will his excitement and eagerness over gathering for worship energized him to extend his invitation to others because they are aspects of god that you can only discover in the context of community i wish i had time to linger there we are called not just to faith but to family not just to conversion but to community and therefore he speaks of those times during the year when all of the tribes of israel assemble that jerusalem to worship the lord the church my friends whether virtual or physical is where god's family gathers in grace on the lord's day to declare the lord's praise and lift up the lord's name it is a space and a place where those who are seeking can be found and those who are saved can be strengthened we are the fraternity of the faithful we are a band of believers we are the congregation of the called and hear me we need each other somebody ought to type iktr i know that's right we are strong individually but we are unstoppable collectively and that's why the adversary works overtime to keep us divided offended hurt upset mad disappointed and wounded over something that transpired because in our fixation on yesterday we are neglecting tomorrow god that's good right there and our fixation on yesterday we are neglecting tomorrow every one of us has something that is divinely designed to bless and benefit somebody else together we are to minister to one another build one another strengthen one another encourage one another it's in helping you live your best life and i get to live my best life that's why the writer of hebrews said in hebrews 10 25 do not forsake the assembling of yourself together as is the habit of some when we are together we draw strength from one another it was john dunn who wrote no man is an island we know this is true if this pandemic has taught us nothing else it has reminded us that we are all interconnected i'm tied to you and you are tied to me my immunization as good as it might be is incomplete without yours we gather to meet the people of god but also to hear the word of god that's verse 4 it's a reference to the ark of the covenant more than simply a carrying case for the commandments the ark symbolize the presence of god among the people of god in the word of god and god still speaks to people through god's word in fact can i suggest to you that there is no substitute for the scriptures in our lives isaiah 40 verse 8 the grass withers the flower fades but the word of god stands forever of psalm 119 105 your word is a lamp to my feet and a light on my pathway hebrews 4 12 the word of god is quick powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword piercing and dividing soul and spirit joints and moral and discerning the thoughts and intents of the heart god still speaks to people through god's word as god's word is spoken some will be glad some will be sad and some gonna get mad because god's word will either draw you or run you comfort you or challenge you delight you or depress you cover you or correct you affirm you when you're right and admonish you where you're wrong a young preacher argued with dr w.r dale a british preacher of another generation that whenever the word is preached it must be preached in a way that's relevant to the moment that's contemporary with the times and dr dale responded young man don't preach to the times preach to broken hearts and the words you live will always be relevant we gather to meet the people of god to hear the word of god and thirdly to worship the person of god the closing words of verse 4 in psalm 122 says give thanks in the name of the lord that's the heart of worship here we unearth the ultimate purpose for gathering in worship it is first and foremost to worship god worship is not a place to get something it is a place to give something we are to give thanks unto the lord in the name of the lord the psalmist said in psalm 34 verse 1 i will bless the lord at all times and his praise shall continually be in my mouth why because god is good and god's mercy endures forever god keeps on doing great things for me every time i turn around god is blessing me god forgives when we forsake god is the one who has an answer for our agonies about a beauty that banishes blemishes a cure for our calamities deliverance amid our distress and an eraser for all of our errors and when i think of the goodness of jesus and all that he's done for me i know some of you are more reserved than that but if i permit you will you overlook me if i shall overlook me if i holler overlook me if my hands go up overlook me i just keep thinking and as my friend freddie haynes would tell us if you keep thinking it won't be long before you start thinking thinking and somebody listening to me owes god a thank you with all god has done for you been to you and given to you considering how god has saved you secured you sustain you you oh god i thank you you should notify everybody in the chat space and type i o god this dr quiet now i apologize reverend dry spirit i'm sorry bishop shut your mouth i know i'm out of order but god has been too good to me for me not to thank him where's walter hawkins when you need him it could have been me outdoors with no food no clothes all alone without a friend just another number with a tragic end but he didn't see fit to let none of those things be every day of my life he keeps on keeping me i want to say thank you lord for all you've done for me so don't spectate participate how should we gather for worship whether physically or virtually we've got to consider the privilege consider the purpose and then consider the prophet of gathering for worship what do we get out of gathering for worship it's in the text and i'll leave you along with this because first there is spiritual prosperity verse 6 says they will prosper that love you verse 7 says prosperity is within your palaces the songwriter is talking about the place that they gathered he's praying about the prosperity of jerusalem one of the benefits of gathering for worship is the spiritual prosperity it brings worship will restore your equilibrium worship will re-establish your peace worship will reignite your joy there are some blessings you get in worship that cannot be duplicated or replicated in any other area of life there's a joy in worship that you can't find in the club there's a high in worship that the chronic cannot provide there's a love in worship that you can't discover in the arms of a new boo there's an ease in worship that neither grey goose nor hennessy can give you don't shout too loud you're going to give yourself away there's something about worship that cannot be duplicated anywhere else because in worship relationships are reconciled prodigal children are brought back to themselves faith is fortified eyes are open hope is strengthened direction is provided hurts are healed issues are resolved anxieties are dispelled and emotions are stabilized and demons have been known to tremble worship is an avenue to spiritual prosperity there's a blessing and meeting with the people of god hearing the word of god and worshiping the person of god we gain spiritual prosperity but secondly we gain spiritual peace in verse 6 the psalmist encourages us pray for the peace of jerusalem in verse 7 he says peace be within thy walls he is not only praying for the prosperity of the city but praying that it might experience peace because there's nothing quite like the peace of god that fills the heart of one who is living and serving god to be able to lay your head down on the pillow at night and know that it is well between you and god is a blessing indeed when we gather for worship and receive a word from god that our needy souls need to hear it brings peace to our soul that all will be well and that despite how things may look god is going to work it out for our good but finally my friends how what prophet do we get out of worship we get spiritual prosperity spiritual peace but we have the opportunity for spiritual praise i was glad when they said to me let us go into the house of the lord and here we are i'm done my friends but rod cooper used to be chaplain of the now defunct houston oilers as a result they'd always give him game tickets once he saw earl campbell run all over everybody his own men included to get to the goal line and when he got to the goal line earl campbell just laid the ball down on the touchdown line and the place went crazy people were jumping up and giving each other high fives the scoreboard went off it was a ringing shout why because their man had scored a touchdown now i'm not going to tell you what to do but i am saying that for 18 months every day god has been scoring touchdowns in our lives somebody ought to celebrate you ought to praise god in a personal way because every child of god is to praise god for yourself every time god blesses us together you ought to give god some praise whether you're personal or whether you're virtual you ought to clap your hands you ought to do your dance you ought to stomp your feet you ought to nod your head you ought to make some noise on a personal level now i understand that some people are too proper to praise too cute to cry too sophisticated to shout too arrogant to say amen to high and mighty to say praise god he brought me from a mighty long ways but you ought to praise god personally and if you get the opportunity you ought to praise god publicly because if you praise god privately you will praise god publicly praise god when you wake up praise god when you lie down praise god for your family praise god for lifting you blessing you keeping you watching over you praise god i've got so much to shout about yes yes i do for god has been good to me praise god personally praise god publicly and one of these days you'll get to praise god perpetually because we are privileged to praise god in time but one of these days will praise god in eternity can i take it there real quick one of these days when time like a weary traveler lays its head in the bosom of eternity when the mighty angel descends and puts one foot on the land and one foot on the sea and gabriel pokes his vaulted trumpet through the blue dome of the sky and blows until the dead get up and the saints go marching in i want to be there when they crown him lord of lords and king of kings i wanna be there when the saints go marching in and cry hallelujah i wanna be there to praise him for all eternity to praise him for saving me praise him for keeping me because he is my everything my burden bearer my heavy load share i don't know what your testimony is but i came to jesus just as i was weary warm and sad and i found in him a resting place and he has made me glad i just want to praise him forever and ever for all he's done for me will you help me i was glad when they said unto me let us go into the house of the lord and now here we are i want to invite you my friend to put your trust in god the goal of praising god is to remind yourself and remind others to testify to others of how good god has been to you if you are breathing it's because god has been good to you i want to invite you into a relationship with god that's the assurance that i offer to you that if you take one step towards god god will take ten towards you and it's not difficult it's as simple as a b c a admit you need god b believe that god sent christ into the world for you that he died on the cross and god raised him on the third day to prove that his sacrifice was acceptable and that salvation for all of us was now reality and then c confess it with your mouth let me give you a d do it today put your trust in jesus christ today give jesus christ a chance with your life today right now there's an entire team of people welcoming loving praying people on standby in our prayer room who would love to pray talk and counsel with you so that you can commence or cultivate your relationship with god if you don't know god on a personal level today is your day to get to know him if you don't have shares every weekend and we need yours before you scroll away secondly download the gps message application guide so you can share this message and discussion with your family and your friends then thirdly if you'd like to attend an in-person worship service with us here at our north campus then go to our website at myspbc.org reopening all the instructions are there i am praying for you that god will lead you to be vaccinated fully it's the best weapon we have along with mass and social distancing and the proper hygiene in terms of washing our hands that we might be safe and extend that safety in love to everybody with whom we have contact somebody said to me i have faith i don't need a vaccine i responded to them i took both vaccines and you don't think that takes faith it takes a whole lot of faith to trust enough to get a shot i want to encourage you to pray about that because the science shows the data reads and i'm not talking about social media because social media is a great device for opinions it's not a great device for facts the science shows that the vaccine is reliable in most situations has a higher efficacy than even the annual flu shot i want you to live i want you to stay alive i've seen too many of my colleagues and too many of my friends die senselessly needlessly when help was available don't harm the help that god has sent you take advantage of every blessing the lord pours into your life and if you agree god bless you if you don't agree god bless you too either way i am praying for you that god will bless your life and allow you to live powerfully in this day and this time and allow you to live out all the days that god wants to give you let's share our benediction together it's printed on the screen would you say it with me now i am because we are we are because god is you are not alone never never never never alone god is with you and so are we we love you and there in a thing you can do about it except pray fervently live
